i went to a used book sale today... procured:
railroad color history: new york central railroad (brian solomon & mike schafer) — i'm not actually that into trains but it appealed to me.
the complete guide to the soviet union (jennifer louis & victor louis) — travel guide from 1980
an anthology including the big sleep (raymond chandler), "the undignified melodrama of the bone of contention" (dorothy l. sayers), "the arrow of god" (leslie charteris), "i can find my way out" (ngaio marsh), instead of evidence (rex stout), "rift in the loot" (stuart palmer & craig rice), "the man who explained miracles" (john dickson carr), & rebecca (daphne du maurier) (i already have this one..) — it's volume 2 of something (a treasury of great mysteries) which annoys me but whatever
an anthology including "godmother tea" (selena anderson), "the apartment" (t. c. boyle), "a faithful but melancholy account of several barbarities lately committed" (jason brown), "sibling rivalry" (michael byers), "the nanny" (emma cline), "halloween" (mariah crotty), "something street" (carolyn ferrell), "this is pleasure" (mary gaitskill), "in the event" (meng jin), "the children" (andrea lee), "rubberdust" (sarah thankam mathews), "it's not you" (elizabeth mccracken), "liberté" (scott nandelson), "howl palace" (leigh newman), "the nine-tailed fox explains" (jane pek), "the hands of dirty children" (alejandro puyana), "octopus vii" (anna reeser), "enlightenment" (william pei shih), "kennedy" (kevin wilson), & "the special world" (tiphanie yanique) — i guess they're all short stories published in 2020 by usamerican/canadian authors
an anthology including the death of ivan ilyich (leo tolstoy) (i have already read this one..), the beast in the jungle (henry james), heart of darkness (joseph conrad), seven who were hanged (leonid andreyev), abel sánchez (miguel de unamuno), the pastoral symphony (andré gide), mario and the magician (thomas mann), the old man (william faulkner), the stranger (albert camus), & agostino (alberto moravia)
the ambassadors (henry james)
the world book desk reference set: book of nations — it's from 1983 so this is kind of a history book...
yet another fiction anthology......... including the general's ring (selma lagerlöf), "mowgli's brothers" (rudyard kipling), "the gift of the magi" (o. henry) (i have already read this one..), "lord mountdrago" (w. somerset maugham), "music on the muscatatuck" (jessamyn west), "the pacing goose" (jessamyn west), "the birds" (daphne du maurier), "the man who lived four thousand years" (alexandre dumas), "the pope's mule" (alphonse daudet), "the story of the late mr. elvesham" (h. g. wells), "the blue cross" (g. k. chesterton), portrait of jennie (robert nathan), "la grande bretèche" (honoré de balzac), "love's conundrum" (anthony hope), "the great stone face" (nathaniel hawthorne), "germelshausen" (friedrich gerstäcker), "i am born" (charles dickens), "the legend of sleepy hollow" (washington irving), "the age of miracles" (melville davisson post), "the long rifle" (stewart edward white), "the fall of the house of usher" (edgar allan poe) (i have already read this one..), the voice of bugle ann (mackinlay kantor), the bridge of san luis rey (thornton wilder), "basquerie" (eleanor mercein kelly), "judith" (a. e. coppard), "a mother in mannville" (marjorie kinnan rawlings), "kerfol" (edith wharton), "the last leaf" (o. henry), "the bloodhound" (arthur train), "what the old man does is always right" (hans christian anderson), the sea of grass (conrad richter), "the sire de malétroit's door" (robert louis stevenson), "the necklace" (guy de maupassant) (i have already read this one..), "by the waters of babylon" (stephen vincent benét), a. v. laider (max beerbohm), "the pillar of fire" (percival wilde), "the strange will" (edmond about), "the hand at the window" (emily brontë) (i have already read this one..), & "national velvet" (enid bagnold) — why are seven of these chapters of novels....? anyway fun fact one of the compilers here also worked on the aforementioned mystery anthology. also anyway Why did i bother to write all that ☹️
fundamental problems of marxism (georgi plekhanov) — book about dialectical/historical materialism which is published here as the first volume of something (marxist library) which is kind of odd to me tbh
one last (thankfully tiny) anthology including le père goriot (honoré de balzac) & eugénie grandet (honoré de balzac)

Lincoln leads nearly 2-ton Peanut Butter Express collection effort
10th Annual R.I. Interscholastic League Peanut Butter Express Drive Leads to 3,640 Pounds for Rhode Island Community Food Bank
Presented by BankRI, local high school collection effort again led by Lincoln High School
 May 31, 2024

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (May 31, 2024) – The Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL) has concluded its 10th annual Peanut Butter Express collection drive to benefit the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, with Lincoln High School once again setting the gold standard. In total, the statewide community service initiative resulted in a delivery of 3,640 pounds of peanut butter to the Food Bank earlier this week.
In addition to serving as presenting sponsor of this initiative, Bank Rhode Island (BankRI) actively participated by placing collection bins at all 22 of its branch locations. The Bank’s customers and employees gave generously, resulting in 1,318 jars of peanut butter, which surpassed last year’s total by nearly 300 jars.
Tumblr media
“The generosity and support from our member schools and BankRI continues to astound me,” said RIIL Executive Director Mike Lunney. “The success of the Peanut Butter Express is a testament to our mission to develop a sense of community service within our schools and within our communities.”
This year’s RIIL Peanut Butter Express drive began on April 8, opening a month-long window for participating schools to engage in a friendly competition for an important cause. The RIIL has hosted the statewide challenge since 2015 as a way to encourage leadership and citizenship among the league’s more than 30,000 student-athletes. Peanut butter, a protein-rich food, is among the most requested items for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank and its statewide network of emergency food pantries. Each month, more than 80,000 Rhode Islanders turn to the Food Bank and its network for food assistance.
Tumblr media
Carla Gabriel, manager of BankRI’s Lincoln Branch, paid a visit to Lincoln High School with the RIIL’s Carolyn Thornton on Wednesday, May 29, to present the school with yet another Peanut Butter Express Championship banner – it’s fifth to be exact. Madison Flaxington, Lincoln High’s assistant athletic director, led the school’s first winning drive of 1,375 pounds of peanut butter in 2019 when she was a student at Lincoln and a member of the RIIL’s Student Advisory Board. She and Lincoln athletic director Greg O’Connor have continued to coordinate the collection effort, engaging the entire student body and sparking a friendly competition between all of the Lions’ spring sports teams. Lincoln has been the top collector every year since - with the exception of 2020 when the Peanut Butter Express had to be suspended because of COVID. With this year’s haul of nearly 2,000 pounds, which again was spearheaded by Lincoln’s girls outdoor track and lacrosse teams, the Lions have now donated 4.2 tons of peanut butter to the Food Bank over the past six years.
Tumblr media
Along with Lincoln High School taking top honors, Bay View Academy and Toll Gate High School placed second and third, respectively. The RIIL concluded the drive at its RIIL Leadership Training Workshop, held earlier this month at Camp Fogarty, encouraging students who attended to bring along a jar of peanut butter.
“To consider the amount of peanut butter this drive generated in 2024 – let alone since inception – is truly remarkable, and demonstrates how dedicated our young people are to making a difference in their community,” said Will Tsonos, BankRI’s President and CEO. “Alleviating hunger is a cause we all can get behind, and BankRI is proud to be a partner of RIIL’s Peanut Butter Express.”

Rinse and Repeat-Finding Feelings Not Freedom
Hi Skippy & Friends-Pilgrim here wishing a lovely Sunday to all. In our never ending efforts to understand the driven Harkles and group, I looked up Dey Street Books wondering why they would want to invest in deep drivel with Finding Freedom take 2? Here is a quick peek at their business profile.
1. Formerly It Books with a reputation for celebrity memoirs, it is part of William Morrow Group at HarperCollins which is located on the corner of Broadway and Dey Street, NYC. 2. The refreshed imprint will publish fiction and nonfiction "through innovative marketing and publicity efforts"...Hmmm what does this mean? 3. Books include Live Wire by Kelly Ripa; Pairs Hilton by Paris; Pamela Anderson titled Love, Pamela; and this one-Percersion of Justice, The Jeffrey Epstein Story; Little Sister by Lana Wood-about Natalie's death, defines their inventory. 4. Carrie Thornton was mentioned as heading up this project. She is the VP/Editorial Director and worked on the "international blockbuster Finding Freedom by royal reporters Omid Scobie & Carolyn Durand" who specilizes in "non-fiction publishing with a focus on personality driven titles in the areas of memoir, lifestyle, humor and music." I would guess more like fictional feelings, and subjective statements filling the pages VS non-fiction facts by honest authors.
PS...HarperCollins is owned by News Corp which is Rupert Murdoch's media conglomerate.
Over and out from a steamy Cape Cod...Long live the queen!
Thank you so much Pilgrim……what a very informative post!🙂❤️

Part 11 of the Christmas Special, in which every day, until Christmas day, I will post a video requested by you.
11/25
The wife. The former wife - requested by Joan K Feret,  Carolyn Merriman and Susan Blair, who wanted to see Jack stumbling over "my wife. Uh, my former wife" in Murder Most Scandalous, and then Phryne saying almost the exact same thing in Marked for Murder.
Jack's wife, uh, former wife, asks him to take over her father's case, where he is suspected of murder. There's just one tiny little hiccup in his otherwise flawless investigation: Phryne shows up at his crime scene, in his former father-in-law's house. And she meets his wife. Uh, former wife. And he passes this encounter of the third kind with flying colors. Or so he hopes.
Music and clip bits in this video:
1. Lionel Richie - Oh no
2. Beth Thornton - Something you don't know
3. Ne-Yo - Closer
4. Brandy & Monica - The boy is mine
5. Firefly (2002) - Yeah! That went well
6. Diana (2013) - What is she up to?

Ranking (Most of) the Nancy Drew Video Games
Literally no one asked for this, but I thought it’d be really fun to rank and give my opinion on each of the games. I’m biased towards a fair share of the games since they were the ones that I played growing up. **I have yet to complete 5 of the games (I know, blasphemy) but I’m not going to rank them since I don’t have any opinion on them. This includes: Stay Tuned For Danger, Final Scene, Ransom of the Seven Ships, The Captive Curse, and Labyrinth of Lies. I am also not including the dossier games. I also want to stress that I don’t dislike any of the games.
Tumblr media
28. Secrets Can Kill (Remastered): This game is okay, it’s not my favorite. I like the fact that Nancy is trying to solve a murder. But I feel like all the characters are kinda bland and really aren’t all that memorable, and neither are the games. I also found the hidden clues in the posters to be a bit challenging, so overall, I’m not a huge fan of the game.
27. Tomb of the Lost Queen: I loved the idea, but it wasn’t really memorable to me. I enjoyed it enough when I played it, but have absolutely no desire to play again. But I do like the Egyptian history that we see in this game.
26. Midnight in Salem: Honestly, not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. But by no means is it good. I didn’t hate it while playing, but it was missing a lot of what the games normally have. It felt dull and kinda boring, and the plot just didn’t feel totally cohesive. But, I look forward to playing more games in the future, even if it means waiting another 4 years. I will admit though that the mechanics were seriously lacking. I hated having to drag the screen up and down to search for clues, and the way moving worked kinda was abrupt and sudden. But, I’m realllllly digging the updated looks for the Hardy Boys.
25. Trail of the Twister: Kinda boring, kinda not. I don’t really care about tornadoes at all, so it was boring to learn about them and having to be part of the team. But I did enjoy the underlying mystery about selling secrets and such, and I liked most of the characters.
24. The Shattered Medallion: It’s an interesting game, but I’m not a huge fan of it. Nancy and George (and Bess) being on a reality tv show is an interesting concept, but I like the concepts where there is true mystery and danger to be found as Nancy delves deeper. The puzzles were fun, but not super memorable. I think it’s a fun game to play once, but I have absolutely no desire to play it again.
23. Message in a Haunted Mansion: I haven’t played this one in years, but I remember being terrified of it when I did. Finding the creepy note and then almost having the house burn down always scared me, and the fact that there was a “ghost” haunting the place didn’t help. I think it’s an enjoyable game, but it doesn’t have the same replay-ability as some of the other games do.
22. Secret of the Scarlet Hand: I love history, I really do. However, I found that this game was just a tad bit too boring with how much history it had in it. I enjoyed getting to learn about Mayan culture, but the fact that the mystery doesn’t really occur until half way through the game was just kinda a killer for me. The puzzle weren’t my favorite either.
21. The Haunted Carousel: I had a really hard time playing this one, but that has nothing to do with the game itself. I have a fear of oceans and sharks, so sometimes I had a hard time getting through puzzles. The puzzles weren’t my favorite, but I think the plot was interesting, with Joy remembering her past and the amusement park.
20.  The Creature of Kapu Cave: I think it was really cool that we had the opportunity to play as the Hardy Boys in this game. I think it was an interesting plot overall, but I got bored sometimes. I also hated Quiggly, she was rude and annoying towards Nancy and it just frustrated me to no end.
19.  Curse of Blackmoor Manor: The game had a creepy feel to it, but I feel like the end of the game was a real let down. There was so much plot throughout the game, and there was the “curse” that Nancy learned about, and it just seemed to come to an abrupt ending.
18.  Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake: I think this game is interesting. The speakeasy was a really cool aspect of the game, and I enjoyed that it was a bit of a darker game. But I think the puzzles were fun and interesting and it was an enjoyable game.
17.  Ghost of Thornton Hall: I love the atmosphere of this game, with it taking place in the South with ghosts. I love the history that was involved in the game, and the whole plot revolving around Charlotte and her death/murder. I like the dark route the game took, compared to some of the other games. It’s one of the few games that give me the chills.
16.  Sea of Darkness: I hate it when there is Ned and Nancy drama in the games, it always makes me so uncomfortable. In a previous post I talked about how I felt about their relationship, so I won’t really get into it, but that’s besides the point. The fact that it’s last game with Lani Minella is sad, but it was still an interesting game. I think the puzzles were fun, and I enjoyed the Icelandic activities in the game.
15.  The Silent Spy: I love the fact that we get a backstory on Nancy’s mom’s death. Also, going to Scotland and meeting Samantha FREAKING Quick. The fact that we finally got to put a face to her name after waiting for so long (11 games btw). I think it was a seriously fun game that had some interesting puzzles and had a unique plot.
14.  The Haunting of Castle Malloy: Another really creepy game to me, but really well done. I enjoyed most of the puzzles in the game, and the idea of searching for the missing groom and trying to understand the history of Castle Malloy was super interesting. The characters were overall rememberable, and so was the plot, and I feel like it was a nice, challenging game
13.  Alibi In Ashes: I really enjoyed this one too, and I love that you get to play as Bess, George, and Ned on top of playing Nancy. I find it crazy that her town would think that she would burn down the old town hall, but it’s whatever. I liked getting to build a case for Nancy, I think that was a fun aspect of the game. I also liked that it was our first chance to really meet Deirdre Shannon. I just liked the whole mystery aspect of this game, with dusting for finger prints and picking locks to trying to determine a suspect.
12.  Legend of the Crystal Skull: I liked the dark vibe of this game, and that we got to play as Bess. I really enjoyed Henry Bolet and his character, and I think that the overall plot of the game was really interesting. The crystal skull was a really cool idea to have in a game, and I feel like overall the game had a good balance of creepiness. I also loveddd the little trap on the poor shop keeper with the sneezing powder.
11.  Danger on Deception Island: This was another one of my favorites from when I was a kid. I always enjoyed the puzzle, especially the one with building Nessie for some weird reason. I thought the plot was really interesting, and that it was a creative idea. The puzzle in the game were also really creative, and I thought that overall, it was a cool game. The characters were interesting, and so was the plot.
10. The Deadly Device: The danger. The mystery. I spent so freaking long trying to beat aggregation, I cannot express the pleasure of completing all the levels. I like that this one had a murder, which reminded me of some of her older cases. I really enjoyed the characters in this one too, and I like how much a true mystery the case was. There were a few moments that really had me a little anxious and on the edge of my seat as I played.
9. Shadow at the Water’s Edge: One of the scarier games of the series, but I enjoy it. I feel like there are certain scenes that are actually terrifying, and I love how well done everything is. All the characters are interesting and finding out the backstory of the hotel and all the ghost business of the game. I think that it as a whole was just an amazing game, and there was so much detail that went into this game that I loved.
8.  The White Wolf of Icicle Creek: Weirdly enough, I love the chores aspect of this game. I normally hate doing chores, but they’re kinda fun here. I think the puzzles in this game are fun, and so is the mystery. I love it when Nancy goes undercover. I love that they brought back Tino Balducci for it, and like Nancy, I feel like all of us were groaning at the realization that we had to work with him (but we were all also kinda excited to do it too). However, there was so much history to the game, that I feel like the ending was kinda abrupt, but that could totally just be me.
7.  Secret of the Old Clock: I absolutely love the fact that this game takes place in the 1930s and that it’s based loosely on Carolyn Keene’s books The Secret of the Old Clock and The Mystery at Lilac Inn. The mini games are some of my favorites, and I just enjoyed all the characters and the plot. I always had a lot of fun when I played this one when I was younger, and it was always a game I looked forward to playing
6.  Treasure in a Royal Tower: I love the history that the game is based on, Marie Antoinette. I found that the puzzles in this game were fairly fun too, but I especially liked having to do a bit of sneaking around. I feel like the older games had a lot more danger to them, and I found myself on the edge of my seat sometime while playing.
5.  Danger by Design: Ooooh, this is a fun one. I loved getting to work for Minette, even though she was kinda crazy. All the puzzles were so much fun, but my favorites have to be the cooking challenge and the designs for Prudence Rutherford. The characters are super fun in this game, and I love the plot about the stained glass too. Getting to go into the catacombs is also super fun, and overall, I think they went in a really good direction for this game.
4.  The Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon: I adored this game when I was a kid since it was the first Nancy Drew game I ever played. The idea of a hidden gold mine on top while also having Lori’s disappearance on a moving train was just so fascinating to me. I always enjoyed the puzzles and loved the characters, especially the Hardy Brothers.
AND FINALLY... MY TOP 3 FAVORITE GAMES
3.  The Secret of Shadow Ranch: This is one of the more recent one I played, and I loved it so much. I love the history and culture of New Mexico, so I really enjoyed getting to see the petroglyphs and the cliff dwellings. I’m also a sucker for baking puzzles in games, so I really enjoyed that. The characters were also really interesting, and I loved the Dirk Valentine plot line. Overall, it was a really really fun game that I would love to play again.
2.  Phantom of Venice: This game is near and dear to my heart. The characters are really interesting, and I love getting a glimpse at Ned and Nancy’s relationship, with him giving her the necklace (especially since the more recent games have been giving them a rocky relationship). I think the adventure itself is an interesting one, and I love it when Nancy travels abroad for a mystery. The puzzle in this game were really interesting, and overall, I really enjoy it. I also loved getting to be Punchy LaRue!
1. Warnings at Waverly Academy: This has been my favorite Nancy Drew game for years. I love all the characters and how different yet similar they are to one another. The puzzle throughout the game, from making a DNA strand to playing scram and air hockey, I didn’t dislike any of the them.  And the Edgar Allen Poe story plot is also super cool, I think that was an amazing plot that Her Interactive came up with. Also, the snack shop mini-game is just so much fun. “As of now, the snack shop is open!”

Oh definitely no worries and I apologize if that sounded pressuring in any way; I just know because of how sporadic I am on this site that I'm bound to miss updates, but it's definitely important to focus on school.
To be honest I haven't read much in a while myself. I just finished my PhD program last spring so all I've really be reading is academic papers and some memoirs and stuff here and there but nothing too exciting. I used to avidly read authors like Stephen King and John Grisham; those are the authors most frequent on my shelf. But of course I've read my fair share of George Orwell and John Steinbeck, CS Lewis, TS Eliot, etc. My favorite poet for a long time was Edgar Allan Poe, ever since I was a kid.
Even with a limited circle of literature, I'm sure there's some pieces you fancy quite a bit? Would you mind sharing your favorites with me?
Agreed about fanfic writers only reading fanfiction. I feel like that's another reason I'm really picky with what I read because it's definitely easy to fall into the same cycle of stories, and admittedly, I've written those cliche stories because people eat them up. I always want to explore and write something different, but my confidence lacks severely.
Tumblr media
You didn’t sound pressuring at all!! I was just ranting lol. I get that completely!! I usually have to check my mutuals/favorite writers blogs to see if they posted because I rarely scroll through tumblr anymore.
OMG DUDE YOURE SO SMART I CANNOT YOU HAVE YOUR PHD?? So much respect!! Wow I feel fake I’ve never read either of those authors’ works. But the ones you listed John Steinbeck, etc. I have for sure! Poe is a classic ahaha. I don’t have favorite authors (I never read more than one book of an author) but favorite books include Imagining Argentina by Lawrence Thornton, The Farming of the Bones by Edwidge Danticat, What You Have Heard Is True by Carolyn Forche, and The Antelope Wife by Louise Erdrich.
If you’re a real writer what the hell are you doing on tumblr haha, all the NCT writers I’ve talked to are studying/working in something not writing related. The last writing/reading class I took was last spring so... Who doesn’t love a cliche story to escape? I have my fair share of cringe in my masterlist haha. It’s more like... my pride is on the line? I want my best work to be a story that I relate to and seems authentic. I understand being a weary of creativity... I was so ashamed when that Taeyong story didn’t do as well as any of my other stories... but what can you do? That’s why when you left your comments I was almost crying haha. I was stressed out of my mind when starting the Holiday Blue’s series because they cover topics few writers venture into... I lowkey thought I was gonna get ousted haha so don’t worry too much?! whenever you get back into writing please add me to your tag list!!

Tamaki, Valero-O’Connell and more win 2019 Ignatz Awards
Tumblr media
The winners of the 2019 Ignatz Awards were announced this weekend at the Small Press Expo in Bethesda, Maryland.
The big winners of the night were Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me writer Mariko Tamaki and artist Rosemary Valero-O’Connell, who took home three awards between them, including “Outstanding Graphic Novel.” The political cartoon site The Nib also continued its recent winning streak, taking home the award for “Outstanding Series.”
The Ignatz, named after George Herriman’s brick-wielding mouse from the classic comic strip Krazy Kat, recognizes exceptional work that challenges popular notions of what comics can achieve, both as an art form and as a means of personal expression. The awards have been presented annually since 1997.
And the 2019 winners are:
Outstanding Graphic Novel: Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me by writer Mariko Tamaki and artist Rosemary Valero-O’Connell (First Second).
Outstanding Artist: Rosemary Valero-O’Connell for Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me (First Second).
Outstanding Story: Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me by Mariko Tamaki and Rosemary Valero-O’Connell (First Second).
Outstanding Collection: Girl Town by Carolyn Nowak (Top Shelf Productions).
Outstanding Anthology: We’re Still Here: An All-Trans Comics Anthology, edited by Tara Avery and Jeanne Thornton (Stacked Deck Press).
Outstanding Series: The Nib Magazine, edited by Matt Bors (The Nib).
Outstanding Minicomic: Trans Girls Hit the Town by Emma Jayne (Diskette Press)
Outstanding Comic: Check Please! by Ngozi Ukazu (First Second).
Outstanding Online Comic: Full Court Crush by Hannah Blumenreich
Promising New Talent: Ebony Flowers

I watched the 2011 Academy Award nominee, Puss In Boots.
Tumblr media
This is the third line in the entire film:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Puss... In Boots. Arguably my favorite Shrek character. YES, I SAID IT. HE’S THE BEST. As such, I was excited for this movie, and was there opening day. And it was... Fine. It was fine. Nothing special.
First of all, obviously the eponymous character is the best part. Antonio Banderas does his best Antonio Banderas impression, and luckily he’s given quite a bit to work with. The worst part is... Mostly the rest.
I mean, not everything. Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris work well as Jack and Jill, and the animation is all right. But there are bad parts. Mainly Softpaws and Humpty Dumpty.
Let’s start with Kitty Softpaws. Let me be clear, I don’t hate the character, and Salma Hayek does what she can with the material, but... Why was she here? She’s just forced in to a) give Puss a love interest and b) she had to be a Strong Independent Woman™ to give the movie feminism points.
Finally, the egg. I fucking hate him. From beginning to end, everything in him invoked hatred in me. I feel my sleeping pill kicking in, shutting down broadcast. It’s fine! See it if you want, but it’s no masterpiece!
OQ: 6 SQ: 7 Score: 62
Last Note: It’s pretty funny hearing Princess Carolyn curse out the cats.

Introducing 2024 RIIL Student-Athlete of the Year Wayne McNamara of Lincoln High School
On May 8, 2024, the Rhode Island Interscholastic League and Official Hometown Health Partner Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island presented the 2024 RIIL Student-Athlete of the Year Award to Leila Hopkins of Classical High School and Wayne McNamara of Lincoln High School at the 12th annual RIIL Awards Breakfast, held at the Quonset O Club in North Kingstown.
Here are excerpts from the presentation of Wayne's award, made by BCBSRI Executive Vice President and Chief Customer Officer Melissa Cummings:
I’m honored to be presenting this year’s Student-Athlete of the Year awards, which recognize the outstanding efforts of two seniors in Rhode Island high school athletic programs. These awards are given to student-athletes who excel in the classroom and during competition, who participate in multiple school-sponsored sports, and who demonstrate good citizenship in their school and in their community.
Our next Student-Athlete of the Year award goes to Wayne McNamara of Manville. A team captain and five-time All-State honoree in volleyball and basketball, Wayne has also collected multiple MVP, All-League, All-Division, and All-Academic awards throughout his time at Lincoln High School.
This past basketball season, he was named the Division 2 Player of the Year and wrapped up his senior season as Lincoln’s second-leading scorer all-time… with more than 1,300 career points!

In volleyball, he helped lead his team to a perfect 16-0 record and the regular-season title as a sophomore. His junior year, he guided Lincoln to the Division 2 state championship. His senior season is happening right now, so we’ll see what other awards he adds to his collection!
Outside of competition, Wayne ranks third in his class with a weighted GPA of 4.989, is a member of FBLA, a percussionist in the school band, a member of the ping pong club, and president of his senior class. He’s also active within the community, volunteering at places like the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Rhode Island and Basketball Club of Rhode Island.
In his nomination for this award, Wayne’s athletic director described him as one of the best student-athletes ever to play at Lincoln High School. His math teacher said he inspires her to do a better job, and be a better teacher. His English teacher said, “If our country had more people like Wayne McNamara in it, society would be in a much better position to realize our nation’s ideals.”
WOW!!! Those are some incredible endorsements!!
All three of these individuals also said that the most impressive thing about Wayne is simply who he is as a PERSON. He is a natural-born leader… a role model… intelligent… engaging… gracious… inspiring. He is a remarkable young man who has overcome adversity and who ALWAYS puts his family, friends, teammates, and classmates first.
Tumblr media
It is a privilege to present this award to such an impressive young man, who will be attending Brown University next fall as a Biology major with a focus in Pre-Med. Please join me in congratulating Wayne McNamara, and welcoming him up here to receive his Student-Athlete of the Year award!
