The behavior that I'm hearing about from the public about local services actually trying to stop people from helping those stranded, reminds me an awful lot of the Uvalde shooting. Parents were threatened and physically restrained by officers, when they tried to go help their children. I don't think I'm the first person to wonder if those officers were ordered to NOT help those children. I often think about the man whose wife was a teacher, killed in that attack. He has a heart attack soon after. The poor man literally died of a broken heart, over losing her.

When President Joe Biden was asked if there’s any more resources that the federal government could be providing hurricane victims, he said:

“No. We’ve given them … a significant amount even though they didn’t — hadn’t — asked for it.”

This is fucking bullshit. People are homeless. People are dying. The government doesn’t care about Appalachia. It never has and never will unless we make enough noise. They gave Israel $8.7 billion while saying hurricane victims have enough money that we didn’t even ask for even though we’ve been BEGGING for help. They need to STOP funneling money into the Israeli death regime while their own countrymen fucking suffer and die under the boot of capitalism!!!!!! This country is fucked!!! They value Israel’s continued destruction of Palestine over their own people!!!!!!!!!!!! The lives of murders will always be more valuable to other murderers than innocent lives, no matter the country. Free Palestine, support Appalachia. Fuck the United States government.

HURRICANE RELIEF MUTUAL AID STREAM

Helene totally took out my local game store, Main Street Comics and Games. Tomorrow night (10/16/24, Wednesday) at 7 pm est I'll be running a Charity Stream raising money to help them get back to doing the wargame stuff that we love! We'll be painting minis, kit bashing, and helping rebuild my favorite LGS!

Main Street Comics was completely submerged in downtown Marshall, about 20 minutes away from Asheville NC. They are a small family business, and could really use your support. They're so close to their goal!

Ways to donate and help flood victims in Western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene

I thought I would make a list of possible things to donate to NC and TN if you’d rather donate goods instead of funds.

I would like to note that most stores lost power and a LOT of goods are either sold out or were destroyed for obvious reasons. It’s a disaster in the stores, and my area wasn’t hit as hard as others. Most people don’t have the means to get to a store or, even if they could, the store will likely be out of what they need. Goods are being air dropped and distributed within these places. (This is not to say that financial donations are not needed. BOTH are necessary.)

Here’s a list of needed donations;

Dry, shelf stable, ready to eat foods (crackers, bread, jams, fruits, vegetables, snack foods; anything will be helpful) Canned goods are a maybe. Pull tab is best as a lot of people don’t have manual can openers or know how to use one.

Water. Bottled water. Jugs. Anything. Water is absolutely VITAL right now as we have a shortage of clean water and plenty of broken water lines

Power banks, while they might not be able to charge them at home, many community places such as churches are offering for people to charge their devices. This can help keep them in touch with help and loved ones longer.

Children activities (coloring books and crayons/pencils, non electronic toys, etc) Many kids are left without their devices and need things to help them through these terrifying times.

Pet foods of any kind

Gasoline canisters; for those that have access to getting more gasoline and powering generators

Charcoal and matches; this can help with making sure people are able to cook and have a heat source

Toiletries; toilet paper, personal hygiene goods, wet wipes, pads and tampons

Clothing and towels (please keep in mind sizes in XL and higher. These sizes can be scarce even without disaster)

Flashlights and batteries

Newborn needs (formula, diapers, wipes, jarred baby foods)

hurricane helene has made me realize something: the north could not care less about us. this might upset some northerners but be fr, the south is begging for help- north carolina has towns that are completely flooded and wiped out, georgia has towns that are still flooded and struggling- but i haven’t seen anyone from the north even try to help. in fact, i have watched people from the north say its a good thing, that we deserve it for being a red state. for one, no matter how you vote we are still people. two, is it that hard for yall to comprehend that not everyone from the south votes that way. and not everyone from the south even has the option to leave- and many don’t want to. do we deserve to be drowned and uprooted? do the children, who have no say over their parents actions deserve it?

“How can I help WNC and ETN after Helene and the flooding?”

This is a big question a lot of people are asking right now. It can be hard to determine what organizations you may or may not want to donate to, or even what kind of donation is appropriate.

First, please remember any contribution is helping. Liking, sharing, spreading the news. Even if you can’t help financially, you can get others involved who might be able to. It’s the same with any cause, awareness is vital.

Secondly, make sure to do your own independent research. Make sure the charity you’re considering is in good standing and your efforts won’t be wasted.

Online Monetary Donations

Several places accept monetary donations, both online and in the mail. I've listed below several large names and smaller organizations that I have found credible. If you find another source please let me know, or if you find a reason to remove one please also let me know. Our efforts must be put to actual use instead of mismanaged for whatever reason. My sources are most likely going to be biased towards ETN, so more help with local charities for WNC is appreciated too.

If you're local and looking to help out physically, but don't know how, there are several great ways. Clearing debris from the roads can be done by almost anyone with safety in mind. Ask your neighbors if they have everything they need, and reach out to the elderly and disabled in your community. Help with clearing out the damaged houses and sorting through whatever remains. Below are some places online you can sign up to donate your time with more coordinated efforts in more damaged areas.
