Directed by Carlo Mirabella-Davis, Swallow follows Hunter (Haley Bennett), a stay at home wife living an unfulfilling life with her self-centered rich husband (Austin Stowell). After finding out she is pregnant, she begins to indulge her cravings for eating dangerous objects such as rocks, needles and even batteries.

This movie was a beautiful experience. The colors and decor were well thought out and added to the immersion. I loved the way the wardrobe was curated. Hunter's clothes changed throughout the movie, showcasing her mental state and the various stages of her life. I thought all the actors were great, but Haley Bennett's performance was particularly impressive in this movie. She really nailed the role. This movie is definitely multilayered and can be interpreted differently by the viewer depending on their personal experiences. I found it beautiful. Pregnancy, struggle with mental health, finding ways to cope with trauma, motherhood, failed marriages, criticism of the patriarchy, and suicidal thoughts. I personally took this movie as it was served to me; as a story about mental illness being ignored and silenced by patriarchy. Whether you're a man or a woman, mental illness is never taken seriously and is often looked down upon in a patriarchal society. This movie does focus more on the woman's experience and it helped me empathize and appreciate it a lot more. It felt good to see yourself represented, even if the way Hunter was coping with her trauma was particular. I personally never felt the need to eat peculiar objects, I can understand that some people find in it a way to be in control and cope with their struggles.

Overall, I had a great time. The movie is also well-paced and no scenes ever felt dragged for too long. I know that I will think about this movie often.

"Swallow" é um filme de 2019 maravilhosamente dirigido por Carlo Mirabella-Davis, que segue a história de Hunter, interpretada de maneira estelar por Haley Bennet, e seu esposo Richie, que formam aquele típico casal ideal, onde Richie é o homem rico e bonito, e Hunter deveria ser a esposa perfeita para ele. Ao mesmo tempo, ela tem que agradar não só a ele, mas também às exigências dos seus sogros rígidos, e acaba engravidando, o que faz sua saúde mental se deteriorar.

Hunter desenvolve uma compulsão por engolir objetos e, apesar de o filme parecer ser sobre isso, esse não é o tema central, pelo menos aos meus olhos. O tempo todo no filme, Hunter é tratada como um nada, tanto pelo esposo quanto pelos sogros, e provavelmente só servia para conceber um herdeiro. A compulsão dela era uma forma que ela encontrou de se sentir no controle, como uma alegoria. Ao longo do filme, ela tenta encontrar seu lugar no mundo, uma razão para estar ali. Onde ela pertencia? Estava no controle de si mesma? Ao longo do filme, vemos muitos desses questionamentos em Hunter, não exatamente por palavras, pois muitas vezes um olhar pode dizer muito mais.

O roteiro do filme consegue trabalhar temas sensíveis e pesados de uma maneira muito boa, com gatilhos dos quais eu não sei se poderia citar, pois seriam spoilers. Mas, caso vá assistir, tenha em mente que há vários! O próprio ambiente do filme transmite muito dos sentimentos de Hunter: uma casa grande e aberta que faz o telespectador se sentir solitário. Era como a protagonista se sentia, sendo assim quase a alma do filme. Os tons de vermelho no filme, para mim, são uma coisa maravilhosa que se encaixam perfeitamente em muitas cenas, e a direção foi algo lindo de se ver em muitos aspectos.

Na minha opinião, "Swallow" é como um ciclo que, no último ato, é felizmente quebrado. E, novamente, sem querer dar spoilers, mas vejam os créditos do filme, são maravilhosos! Apesar de seus vários pontos positivos, senti que houve alguns núcleos que não foram desenvolvidos da melhor forma e, se bem trabalhados, poderiam ter deixado o filme ainda mais interessante do que já é. Mas, tirando essa falha, para mim, é um ótimo filme.
