day 37
today's bird (and yesterday's mystery swallow) is the northern rough-winged swallow!
- the northern rough-winged swallow gets its name from tiny hooks on the leading edge of its primary feathers!
- its genus name Stelgidopteryx means "scraper wing" and its species name serripennis means "saw feather"
- it takes swallows around 100 days to finish growing new feathers (which they molt while flying)

this is NOT the correct way to hold a bird and i know that - i promise i鈥檓 holding her gently, but she was stuck in a fence and badly panicking, so i had limited time to get a hold on her. anyway these are some close up shots of a tree swallow i freed from an aforementioned fence - i love these birds and their iridescence, and getting a closer look was very cool 馃挄
side note - if you ever need to hold a bird and you CAN take the time to do it as safely as possible, look up the banding hold! it鈥檚 essentially making your fingers into what looks like little overalls over the bird鈥檚 shoulder area and chest

February 1, 2025 - Southern Martin (Progne elegans) Found in parts of Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Colombia, Panama, Peru, and probably Uruguay, these martins inhabit open grasslands, shrublands, woodlands, and urban areas. Foraging alone or in small groups, they feed on insects, capturing them in flight. They build their nests from grass stems, twigs, and feathers in cavities in cliffs, trees, the walls and roofs of houses, or riverbanks. Females lay clutches of three to five eggs.
