Two-piece dress, 1876. Centraal Museum Utrecht/Jasper Wiedeman 1996.

This evening gown from 1876 was one of the first dresses to be incorporated into the collection of the Centraal Museum. The original owner of this fashionable garment was -former director and curator- Carla de Jonge’s cousin, Annette Lucie Koch-van Rappard (1857-1928). Born in the Dutch East Indies, she married the Swiss consul and widower, Ferdinand Koch (1847-1900) in Leiden. She lived in Scheveningen after her marriage, but often travelled within Europe, and to Paris in particular. Where she probably bought this dress by fashion house Emile Pasquier. The bright blue skirt with its draped train and the bodice of golden yellow and blue cisele velvet must have made quite an impression. Three tapes are tied into the lining of the underskirt in order to form the specific shape of the skirt. Another ‘secret’ detail is the small lead weights in the bodice, which ensure that it stays in place.

Casting Goals: Ragtime

This took me MONTHS!!!! I had literally scheduled this post and then decided I was going to post it early, but upon re-looking at the cast list I said “You can do better Paul” so I reverted it to a draft and removed about 10 people which then led to shuffling some people around and then casting new people. Throughout the entire process the only definite people that were in this entire process where Stephanie J. Block, Terrence Mann, Michael Luwoye, Brittney Johnson and Katrina Lenk. Everybody else was changing constantly!!

I also divided the ensemble into three sections: Citizens of New Rochelle, Harlem Citizens and Immigrants.

Uccise, torturate, stuprate: le donne partigiane che pochi ricordano Carla era un’infermiera alquanto atipica, curava, cuciva, correva, rischiava. Non era armata, come Tina, una sua compagna, che in bicicletta percorreva le stradine fra Treviso e Padova, per portare radio ricetrasmittenti, a continuo rischio cappio, e che un giorno decise di farsi dare un passaggio da un camion di nazisti, aggirandoli con la scusa di avere un sacco di libri pesanti dentro la valigia. Nello stesso periodo Adriana riparava i ricercati dalla gestapo, e quando la banda Koch la catturò, questa donna bellissima fu “stesa su un letto di chiodi e battuta con un arnese che serviva per il camino, persi tutti i denti, mi spaccarono quasi tutte le costole, ma io non parlai, per otto giorni non parlai…. Ah, scordavo, mi strapparono anche tutti i capelli, ma io non parlai”. Quelle che andavano sui monti si occupavano di tutto, quelle che restavano in citta’ si occupavano di tutto. Ines, Gina e Livia restarono in città, e si inventarono la prima forma di resistenza pacifica; appena avevano il sentore che nel paese limitrofo le Ss stavano organizzando una rappresaglia, davano l’allarme, tutti gli uomini abbandonavano l’abitato, e loro, donne bellisssime, si schieravano di fronte alle loro case, tenendosi per mano, aspettando i tedeschi cantando le canzoni che di norma si sentivano nelle risaie. Tutte senza armi. Paola lavorava al Comune, a stretto contatto con i fasci, e riusciva a far sparire centinaia di stati famiglia bollati come “di razza giudia”, alcuni li bruciava, altri li faceva falsificare, Fam. Goldstein diventava Fam. Bianchi, e così salvò migliaia di esseri umani facendoli transitare per i valichi svizzeri, salvo poi essere impiccata in pubblica piazza. C’era Clorinda, combattente, che venne catturata, stuprata, azzannata dai cani della gestapo, torturata dal capo nazi, infine impiccata pure lei. Alla fine di queste donne bellissime rimase poco o nulla, si contarono in circa diecimila le vittime deportate, torturate, seviziate e macellate come bovini, talune si salvarono, e a parte casi rarissimi (leggi Nilde Iotti e Tina Anselmi), tornarono a fare i lavori di casa fra le mura domestiche, continuarono a fare la vita di prima, lavare, cucinare, badare, crescere i figli, accudire il focolare, senza che nessuno dicesse loro grazie. Su 70mila donne bellissime solo 18 furono insignite di medaglia al valore, e null’altro. Dopo il 25 aprile vi furono le sfilate nelle città liberate, prima gli alleati, poi i gruppi partigiani composti dagli uomini, in fondo alla parata le donne bellissime, solo alcune e non sempre, dato che persino il Pci all’epoca considerava scostumato far sfilare una donna che era stata sui monti con gli uomini, e le medesime venivano insultate dalle donne che non avevano mosso un dito, al grido di “puttane” quando andava bene, e questo comportamento ignobile fece sì che le storie uniche e irripetibili di questo meraviglioso esercito di eroine finisse irrimediabilmente nel dimenticatoio. Io non vi ho mai conosciute, care Compagne, ma vi avrei sposate tutte. Mi sento come pervaso da un senso di latente colpevolezza, da uomo mi sento corresponsabile di questo abnorme insulto perpretato per decenni, vi porgo le mie scuse, per quanto possano servire, care donne bellissime.
