Paul will stay by John's side - a composition
»The original story about this was, I was reading about ›Death of John Lennon‹ in a newspaper. And one of the accounts was that the cop who took him to hospital after he’d been shot said ›Do you know who you are?‹ 'cause apparently that’s what they say to try and, you know, ›I'm Sally Burgess.‹ - ›Oh she’s not too badly off then.‹ But you know in John’s case it was particularly crazy 'cause, you know, it’s like a fan almost ›Do you know who you are?‹ ... and it always - oh my god - strangest remark that to me. I told Carl about this. So we, that's what the nurse now says to the girl in bed as if - in the same way - ›Do you know who you are?‹ That's what she says.«

Tired of the hollow, the base, the untrue, Mother, O mother, my heart calls for you! Many a summer the grass has grown green, Blossomed and faded, our faces between: Yet, with strong yearning and passionate pain, Long I tonight for your presence again. Come from the silence so long and so deep;—    Rock me to sleep, mother, – rock me to sleep! - the third stanza of Rock Me To Sleep by Elizabeth Akers Allen

Well, to my surprise, it turned out too long for reading and too messy for meaning, obviously. So I just cut the main points (but it means we can't see how they interwoven through years).
Part 1: dances as true love and lover as just temporary person vs dancer who is a partner for ever
Well, she was just seventeen, you know what I mean And the way she looked was way beyond compare So how could I dance with another When I saw her standin' there
Well, she looked at me and I could see That before too long I'd fall in love with her 'Cause she wouldn't dance with another When I saw her standin' there
(I Saw Her Standing There, 1962/1963, Please Please Me)
If somebody tries to take my place Let's pretend we just can't see his face In this world there's nothing I would rather do I've discovered I'm in love with you 'Cause I'm happy just to dance with you
(I’m Happy Just to Dance with You, 1964, A Hard Day’s Night)
Do you, don't you want me to love you? I'm coming down fast but I'm miles above you Tell me, tell me, tell me, come on tell me the answer You may be a lover but you ain't no dancer
(Helter-Skelter, 1968, The Beatles/White Album)
Because I love you, my little friend I really love you Give me just one more chance And I'll show you Take up the dance where we left off The rest of our life is the, my little
I'm home
((Forgive Me) My Little Flower Princess, Aug 1980)
'Well, Paul told me he said 'John [after his death] will come back…' (Carl Perkins)
Can I get you to show me a little of your mime? You were always a very good dancer … I wait, I wait, I can wait. I can wait back in the bar. I can wait, I can wait, I can wait back in the car. I'll be waiting for you.
(Stranglehold, 1986, Press To Play)

So the Simpsons recently killed off Larry, one of the barflies from Moe's Tavern, and they did a parody of The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" to sum up his life.

Geez, I never thought I'd feel a tad sad for a background character.

Stage Play: My Old Friend
i've been here more than 2 years now and gone deep into the tags a decade back. but i've never seen anything about Two of Us 2.0: My Old Friend, a stage play by Stephen Larsen imagining a final meeting with John and Paul on November 5, 1980.
here's the summary:
The play begins on November 5, 1980. John Lennon, alone in his apartment at the Dakota in New York City, is at a crossroads. He has been having recurring dreams of death and is ready to make big changes in his life, that is if he can summon up the courage. Just then, who should appear, unannounced at his door but Paul McCartney.  The two haven't seen each other for about four years.  John is both glad and a bit wary at the sudden appearance of his old friend.  Can they mend fences? Can they come together? Or they forever doomed to be bound by the strands and complications of their shared history?
here’s a copy of the script.
it packs a lot of bug lore into a few acts (probably too much for a general audience) and leans a bit exposition heavy to fit it into J&P conversation (assumes they haven’t talked most of the decade but then they start bearing souls). the dialogue is an acquired taste, and it commits the Two of Us sin of making paul more normal for the sake of plot and using him to talk through to john. it also leans into very dark territory by the end (tarot reading with jayne mansfield among other things), which is probably tough even for devoted fans.
but it notably features some very J&P moments complete with goons humor, spontaneous bursting into song, and wild tonal shifts that are very them. it's funny then that the most authentic bits are the ones that make me doubt it could ever be adapted right to the stage. at least not without a devoted group producing it.
would have made a good fanfic though. it's especially poignant after Now and Then's release, even if i am a bit skeptical about the timelines (the idea john and paul didn't see each other for 4 years, that the fall 1980 meeting was out of the blue, time of writing Now and Then, etc.). with the biopics back in discussion, it's worth taking another look at it.
this script was read onstage in holmdel, new jersey in 2018. did anyone attend the script reading?
more importantly, has anything been done with it since?

Seems like a good time to repost this.

It adds another layer to “Now and Then” that is eerie and beautiful. And, in my opinion, it’s “very John” to somehow get a message to Paul through the man who wrote “Blue Suede Shoes.” ❤️

The Lemon Twigs covering This Whole World by the Beach Boys and Hold Me Tight by the Beatles!!!
Their banter is hilarious, and I can't believe how mind-blowingly amazing their covers are. They sound incredible.

Think of me every now and then, my old friend
So, I got an ask this weekend about Carl Perkin's story about his song My Old Friend and Paul's reaction to it, but I accidentally deleted it – so sorry!! I think it was about whether or not I believe the whole thing about John's last words. I have to say that I find this really hard to answer. I don't really see a reason for Carl Perkins to lie ... It would be weird for him to make up such an emotional story as he was an accomplished artist whom Paul had been a long time admirer of. Like what does he gain from that? But the story also seems too magical to be true, if you get what I mean. Carl Perkins certainly didn't know about John's song Now and Then, but still that's such a weird coincidence ... but then again the last track The Beatles recorded together was The End and John wrote Life begins at 40, so what actually is coincidence when it comes to The Beatles ... I am not that familiar with Carl Perkins as a person, so I don't want to draw to many conclusions, but I get the vibe that he really loved to tell stories and had quite the poetic mindset... maybe there was a bit of romanticizing going on, but the essence of the story is true? Paul certainly never made a move to correct it, either because he didn't want to contradict his friend/idol or because it is somewhat true ... But ALSO I never saw a version of the interview in which Carl Perkins actually says himself that Linda told him John's last words. Just the part about the crying and that Linda said Carl helped Paul get in touch with his emotions. So there's also the possibility that that part was made up afterwards by someone ... WELL, I'm curious what you think –
If you need a reminder, here's the whole story:

Well, let's go on, perhaps.
Part 2: looking for you
Who knows how long I've loved you You know I love you still Will I wait a lonely lifetime If you want me to - I will
(I Will, 1968, The Beatles/White Album)
'Well, Paul told me he said 'John [after his death] will come back…'
(Carl Perkins about My Old Friend etc)
Can I get you to show me a little of your mime? You were always a very good dancer … I wait, I wait, I can wait. I can wait back in the bar. I can wait, I can wait, I can wait back in the car. I'll be waiting for you.
(Stranglehold, 1986, Press To Play)
Oh white blanket, hiding the traces' of tears she didn't see. Snow white blanket simply covers the memory Of all that used to be. But his heart keeps aching in the same old way. He can't help feeling that she might come back someday.
(Footprints, 1986, Press To Play)
You told me you will find me, pretty baby, But you know you never came, yeah
(I Wanna Cry, 1989, B-Side of the single This One)
I thought I saw your shadow in an old doorway But when I looked again I thought I made a big mistake, It was someone else, who looked a little like you, But now I know, ah ha ha, ain't no one like you. I'll tell you why I know, babe, Hey, 'cause I'm looking for you, looking for you, Yeah, I'm looking for you, That's all I do, that's all <…> Hey nah nah nah, let me tell you, baby, The earth ain't flat, I finally made the decision, and that is that. And now I know, there's only one place to be, You know where that place is, Yeah, for you to be with me.
(Looking For You, 1997, Flaming Pie)

MONDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “Reflections on Charles Brown” by Rupert’s People, a “made in the studio” band. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HXdQ-N0-lM …In 1967, Rod Lynton was a rising songwriter, so managers and record companies got behind him to record his songs using bands-for-hire—in this case Fleur de Lys featuring Chris Andrews on lead vocals. There was turmoil in the ranks as “Charles Brown” bore a striking similarity to the just-released hit single “White Shade of Pale” by Procol Harum, so the boys in FDL re-named themselves “Rupert’s People” to avoid criticism and confusion over the FDL brand. That worry has been lost in the windows of time as the “Charles Brown” single was issued to positive response in 10 countries, and Rupert’s People tracks have been reissued countless times on compilations celebrating the best of British rock of the 60s psychedelic era. Lynton went on to collaborate with John Lennon, and “Charles Brown” found another outlet in the soundtrack for the 2016 animated film ETHEL & ERNEST (A TRUE STORY), with music by Carl Davis, Paul McCartney, and The Shadows. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HXdQ-N0-lM Download a remastered version here: https://timchrisandrews.bandcamp.com/track/reflections-of-charles-brown

I guess the whole line looks like that:
John (about Paul) to Elliot Mintz in 70s: ‘Do you think he thinks about me at all?’
John to Paul in the late 70s: ‘Think about me every now and then, old friend.’
Paul in 1991: ‘Not a day goes by when I don’t think of John.’
'I didnt mention this in the book but from time to time John would say to me ''I wonder what Paul is thinking about, right now.'' I said John, I've only met him a couple of times in my life you know ... I have no idea. And John would ask ''Do you think he thinks about me at all?'''
Elliot Mintz about his 70s conversations with John Lennon, Beatles Podcast 2024
“Also not obvious is that McCartney [for the Liverpool Oratorio] has penned a gorgeous black-spiritual-like piece for mezzo-soprano that intones the last words spoken to John Lennon as he lay dying of gunshot wounds in the back of a New York police car – "Do you know who you are?” McCartney gets a bit choked up at one point when he reveals, “Not a day goes by when I don’t think of John.”
Interview with Paul McCartney, 1991
