A sort of memoir “What is that piece of ancient technology, and where did you find it?” “That, my dear grandson, is a portable reel-to-reel tape recorder from the early 1970s. It belonged to your great-aunt Catherine, and she was probably the one who stored it in the attic for future generations to marvel at.” “Seriously? What’s it supposed to do? Does it still work?” “Yes, miraculously it still…

Too Rolling Stoned: Robin Trower Turns 80
Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan didn’t get old, but if they had, they might have would up sounding a lot like Robin Trower.
Trower, thankfully, did get old and turns 80 today.
Born March 9, 1945, Trower got his musical start as Procol Harum’s guitarist, appearing on the band’s first five albums and returning for 1991’s the Prodigal Stranger before decamping again.
But Trower’s prowess on the guitar, he’s a Strat man through and through, really began to show itself during his solo career in his power-trio format, which produced a stone blues-rock classic in 1974’s Bridge of Sighs.
This was his commercial apex, but Trower has maintained the artistic integrity begun with the Procols across some 30 post-band albums, including 14 in the 21st century, a mark he’ll hit when Come and Find Me arrives April 25.
Throughout it all, Trower’s played guitar like a god - a Hendrexian-Vaughanin god - whom not enough people worship.

Every once in a while, a release takes me by surprise. I mean, by this point, I think I can get a feel for a release with one song. One song is usually enough to see what's coming.
Beaulieu Porch "Sarum Sounds" (a compilation of 21st century releases) was not such a release. "Laminations Are Loaded" gave me the idea I would be listening to a psychedelic pop album. And while this certainly retained the psychedelic feel, the pop came and went. This is beautiful, meandering, lush and unpredictable. I mean, for a minute there, I thought I was listening to Procol Harum.
The biggest compliment I can give the band and this compilation is that it made me think of Cindy Lee. But at times, it also brought to mind The Beatles, Radiohead, MGMT, Candy Claws and Monroe Mustang.
Beaulieu Porch are based in Bath, England. The music is primarily the work of Simon Berry (Carmelite). This compilation is released by Carmelite Records.
