Dupin has been resurrected. AND they adapted a version of Pym played by Mark Hamill. I am going full blown nerd rn. I'm not even sorry about this.
Tumblr media
Also the fact that this is also a mystery thriller (as much as horror) is spot on since Poe is the father of detective fiction. And if you don't know, Dupin came before Tumblr's favorite iconic sleuth— Sherlock. Doyle himself had claimed without Dupin there would be no Sherlock. So I am hyped from just the first episode.

Die Schlangengrube und das Pendel (The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism, 1967)
"I'm already dead, hanged. Yes, I was hanged. Your body soon adapts a resistance to bullets."
"But, sir, I've not done anything wrong!"
"Of course not. All you did was shoot me somewhat."
#Die Schlangengrube und das Pendel#The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism#the blood demon#horror imagery#west german cinema#1967#harald reinl#manfred r. köhler#lex barker#karin dor#christopher lee#carl lange#christiane rücker#vladimir medar#dieter eppler#peter thomas#edgar allan poe#this ended up being quite a lot better than I'd anticipated; I'd figured it for a Jess Franco style bit of eurosploitation trash but#underneath its derivative plot‚ heavy cribbing‚ small cast and strained budget‚ there's an altogether more polished bit of kino going on#in particular‚ this looks fantastic: the set design‚ lighting‚ aesthetics‚ costuming‚ all are working hard to elevate this above its pulpy#genre origins. Bosch stype frescos‚ rich colourful tableaux‚ dripping gothic atmosphere.. on vibes alone this is a real winner#Lee is high in the credits of course but only really has an extended cameo (this being during his sojourn to europe to escape Hammer for a#while‚ only to end up making even cheaper Hammer alikes for the Germans and Italians). the plot is all Corman Poe cycle‚ loosely inspired#by the works of Poe‚ but with its own nearly wholesome adventuring bent. benefits from having genuinely likeable and compelling characters#upfront (Medar is a consistent scene stealer as a highway robber who gets unwillingly pulled into the gothic shenanigans and becomes a#reluctant heroic accomplice). some startling imagery and a few choice pearls of dialogue too. much better than it would look on paper#definitely one of the better examples of euro schlock from this era‚ and among the best Lee was involved in

Dread by the Decade: Vampyr – Der Traum des Allan Gray
👻 You can support me on Ko-fi ❤️
Tumblr media
★★★
Plot: A man must save two young women from a vampire’s curse.
Review: Vampyr boasts striking visuals, a noteworthy experimental style, and interesting lore, but falls short in terms of plot and characters.
Tumblr media
English Title: Vampyr: The Dream of Allan Gray Source Material: In a Glass Darkly by Sheridan Le Fanu Year: 1932 Genre: Vampires, Gothic Country: Germany Language: German Runtime: 1 hour 15 minutes
Tumblr media
Director: Carl Theodor Dreyer Writers: Christen Jul, Carl Theodor Dreyer Cinematographer: Rudolph Maté Editors: Tonka Taldy, Carl Theodor Dreyer Composer: Wolfgang Zeller Cast: Nicolas de Gunzburg, Sybille Schmitz, Jan Hieronimko, Henriette Gérard, Maurice Schutz
Tumblr media
-----
Story: 2.5/5 - Bare-bones, it works best when viewed as a dream. Too much time is dedicated to making the audience read lore written on screen and not enough on the monster.
Performances: 3.5/5 - Schmitz creates one of the most unsettling shots of the film without a word, and the rest of the cast is surprisingly strong for nonprofessional actors.
Cinematography: 4.5/5 - Fantastic camerawork, framing, and use of shadow.
Tumblr media
Editing: 3/5 - Purposefully disjointed with varying degrees of success.
Music: 3/5
Effects: 4/5 - Really creative shadow effects and use of multiple exposure.
Sets: 4.5/5 - Varied and rich. The film was entirely shot on location to its benefit.
Costumes & Make-Up: 4/5

Trigger Warnings:
Very mild violence
