https://www.reuters.com/world/japan/magnitude-74-earthquake-strikes-japan-tsunami-warning-issued-2024-01-01/
TOKYO, Jan 1 (Reuters) - A powerful earthquake struck central Japan on Monday, killing at least one person, destroying buildings, knocking out power to tens of thousands of homes and prompting residents in some coastal areas to flee to higher ground.
The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 triggered waves of about 1 metre along Japan's west coast and neighbouring South Korea, with authorities saying larger waves could follow.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued tsunami warnings for the prefectures of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama.
A major tsunami warning - the first since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan - was issued for Ishikawa but was later downgraded and eventually cut to an advisory, meaning waves up to 1 metre (3 foot) high could be expected.
It was the strongest quake in the region in more than four decades, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Russia and North Korea also issued tsunami warnings for some areas.
Houses were destroyed, fires broke out and army personnel were dispatched to help with rescue operations, government spokesperson Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters.
One elderly man was pronounced dead after a building collapse in Shika Town in Ishikawa, broadcaster NTV reported citing local police.
"The snow from the electric wire (came) down, and also from the roof it fell down and all the cars are shaking, and so everybody was panicked," Jonny Wu, a Taiwanese tourist visiting nearby Nagano prefecture for a skiing holiday, told Reuters.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters he had instructed search and rescue teams to do everything possible to save lives, even though access to quake-hit areas was difficult due to blocked roads.
More strong quakes in the area, where seismic activity has been simmering for more than three years, could occur over coming days, JMA official Toshihiro Shimoyama said.
The government said that as of Monday night it had ordered more than 97,000 people in nine prefectures on the western coast of Japan's main island Honshu to evacuate.
In comments to the press shortly after the quake struck, Kishida also warned residents to prepare for more disasters.
"I urge people in areas where tsunamis are expected to evacuate as soon as possible," Kishida said.
The Imperial Household Agency said that following the disaster it would cancel Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako's slated New Year appearance on Tuesday.A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck in Ishikawa prefecture in central Japan on Monday
'TSUNAMI! EVACUATE!'
Following the quake, a bright yellow message reading "Tsunami! Evacuate!" flashed across television screens advising residents in specific areas of the coast to immediately evacuate.
Tumblr media
Local media footage showed a building collapsing in a plume of dust in the city of Suzu and a huge crack in a road in Wajima where panicked-looking parents clutched their children.
There were reports of at least 30 collapsed buildings in Wajima, a town of around 30,000 known for its lacquerware, and fire engulfed several buildings.
The quake also jolted buildings in the capital Tokyo, some 500 km from Wajima on the opposite coast.
Almost 32,000 households were still without power in Ishikawa prefecture late on Monday, according to utilities provider Hokuriku Electric Power (9505.T), with temperatures set to drop to near freezing overnight in some areas.
Tohoku Electric Power (9506.T) said 700 households remained without power in neighbouring Niigata prefecture.
Telecoms operators also reported phone and internet outages in some areas.
Forty train lines and two high-speed rail services to the quake-hit area halted operations, while six expressways were closed and one of Ishikawa's airports was forced to shut due to a crack in the runway, transport authorities said.
Japanese airline ANA (9202.T) turned back planes headed to airports in Toyama and Ishikawa, while Japan Airlines (9201.T) cancelled most of its services to the Niigata and Ishikawa regions.
NUCLEAR PLANTS
The quake comes at a sensitive time for Japan's nuclear industry, which has faced fierce opposition from some locals since a 2011 earthquake and tsunami triggered nuclear meltdowns in Fukushima. Nearly 20,000 people were killed and whole towns devastated in the disaster.
Japan last week lifted an operational ban imposed on the world's biggest nuclear plant, Kashiwazaki-Kariwa, which has been offline since the 2011 tsunami.
Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority said no irregularities have been confirmed at nuclear power plants along the Sea of Japan, including five active reactors at Kansai Electric Power’s (9503.T) Ohi and Takahama plants in Fukui Prefecture.
Hokuriku's Shika plant in Ishikawa, the closest nuclear power station to the epicentre, had already halted its two reactors before the quake for regular inspections and saw no impact from the quake, the agency said.
Monday's quake struck during the Jan. 1 public holiday when millions of Japanese traditionally visit temples to mark the new year.
In Kanazawa, a popular tourist destination in Ishikawa, images showed the remnants of a shattered stone gate strewn at the entrance of a shrine as anxious worshippers looked on.
Kanazawa resident Ayako Daikai said she had evacuated to a nearby elementary school with her husband and two children soon after the earthquake hit. Classrooms, stairwells, hallways and the gymnasium were all packed with evacuees, she said.
"We haven't decided when to return home yet," she told Reuters when contacted by telephone.

The capital's new light rail line connecting Itäkeskus in eastern Helsinki to Espoo's Keilaniemi has only just opened, but Helsinki is already gearing up to approve funding for another suburban tramline — this time running between the northeastern suburbs of Viikki and Malmi.
The project has been dubbed Viima, or "Icy Wind."
Helsingin Sanomat said it is intended to serve a new residential area emerging in what used to be Malmi's small-craft airport. A lack of public transport in the area would make life difficult for the 25,000 residents expected to eventually live in this part of the city.
Following the recently approved tram in Vantaa, Viima is the next new streetcar project in the Helsinki metropolitan area.
Chinese cash
Finland is open to Chinese money, reports Hufvudstadsbladet. The Swedish-language daily said that while Chinese firms have made fewer foreign investments since the pandemic, Finland remains interested in business from China and does not restrict the flow of Chinese Yuan into the country.
According to HBL, PM Petteri Orpo (NCP) said on Wednesday that Finland has not reconsidered its position on China or Chinese investments.
News that the Chinese company Svolt said Finland is on its list of countries where it's considering building a new battery cell factory, has drawn positive comments, including from Finland's business lobby EK.
Chinese electric cars are gaining a growing share of the European e-vehicle market, increasing Chinese interest in minerals and battery factories, HBL said.
Baby blanket theft
Tampere-based Aamulehti reports of baby blankets going missing in the city's maternity and post-natal ward.
Sharp-eyed staff have, however, noticed the fox-patterned blankets cropping up on social media. This is interesting because the Finnish manufacturer, Univiso, does not retail directly to consumers.
AL said new moms should keep in mind that the Finnish-made blankets are funded by taxpayers. In any event, extra efforts are not needed to track down the culprits. This is because the manufacturer has microchipped every blanket it sends to institutional clients, like hospitals and daycares.
Could Finland compel civil servicemen to milk cows?
There's been a positive reaction to a recent comment on a Finnish-language Yle article suggesting that civilian servicemen help alleviate some of the serious labour shortages on farms.
Milking cows, though often automated these days, is a twice-a-day routine on dairy farms.
The commenter proposed that young men carrying out civilian service, in lieu of military conscription, could step in as stand-in labour on dairy farms.

Delhi experiences extreme weather whiplash as heat waves transition to record rainfall and deadly flash floods.
Sudden heavy rains have caused deadly flash flooding in India’s capital, replacing one of the worst heat waves in Delhi’s history, which had pushed temperatures well above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
An observatory in New Delhi reported 228.1 millimeters (nearly 9 inches) of rainfall in a 24-hour period on Friday, the highest recorded in a single June day for 88 years, and exceeding the city's average for the entire month, according to the Indian Meteorological Department.

At least 11 people died from the rain and flooding last week, including four who drowned in submerged underpasses, Reuters reported, citing local media.
Heavy rains flooded roads, submerged cars and subways, and cut power to parts of the city. Videos posted on social media showed waterlogged streets in Delhi, with residents wading waist-deep through the floods.
The Delhi capital region “is becoming home to extreme weather every season now,” said independent weatherman Navdeep Dahiya on X.
On Friday, heavy rain caused a section of the roof at New Delhi’s airport to collapse, crushing one man to death and injuring eight others. Photos released by the fire service showed the large white canopy of the roof had fallen to the ground, crushing several cars. One person was seen slumped under twisted metal in the driver's seat of one of the cars.
The heavy rains have brought some relief from weeks of blistering heat, with one part of Delhi reaching 49.9 degrees Celsius (121.8 degrees Fahrenheit) in late May — the capital’s highest temperature on record. This year’s scorching heat wave persisted even after sunset, with high nighttime temperatures providing little relief.
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning until July 4 as heavy rains hit much of India’s northeast, east, and northwest coast.
Red alerts, indicating the highest level of threat, were issued for parts of the northeastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, and Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday.
“Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over northwest, east, and northeast India over the next four to five days,” the Indian Meteorological Department stated on Sunday.
In Uttar Pradesh, which borders the Indian Capital Territory, two women reportedly died after a water tank collapsed in the heavy rain, according to ANI News. In Uttarakhand, video posted by ANI News shows vehicles being hauled out of floodwaters after being swept away by heavy rain. CNN cannot independently verify these reports.
On Friday, five Indian army personnel died after their tank got stuck in flash floods while attempting to cross a river during training in northern Ladakh, the army said in a post on X.
“Rescue teams rushed to the location, but due to high current and water levels, the rescue mission didn’t succeed, and the tank crew lost their lives,” the army stated.
Heavy monsoon rains have also caused damage in neighboring countries. In Nepal, at least nine people, including three children, were killed after rains triggered landslides in the country’s west, Reuters reported, citing an official from the National Disaster Rescue and Reduction Management Authority.

From no water to too much water
India, the world’s most populous nation, is one of the countries worst affected by the human-caused climate crisis, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, potentially affecting 1.4 billion people nationwide.
The climate crisis is making extreme weather events more frequent and severe, scientists say, and this can be seen playing out in climate-vulnerable India, which is suffering from extremes of heat, rainfall, and other disasters such as cyclones.
While India often experiences heat waves during the summer months of May and June, in recent years, they have arrived earlier and become more prolonged, with scientists linking some of these longer and more intense heat waves to climate change.
New Delhi topped a recent list of hottest capital cities, recording 4,222 days above 35 degrees Celsius in the past three decades — more than any other city analyzed. Between 2014 and 2023, just under half (44%) of days in the Indian capital met that threshold, compared to 35% from 1994 to 2003, and 37% from 2004 to 2013.
Delhi, like many cities in India, is suffering from a water crisis, with acute water shortages and lack of groundwater supply leaving many people to rely on water tankers for their supply of fresh, clean water.
"We get water only once a day, and it’s scalding hot. Unless you fill up a bucket and let it cool off all day before using it, you can’t bathe in this water," said 60-year-old Kalyani Saha, a resident of the Lajpat Nagar neighborhood in the capital city, recently told CNN.

Meanwhile, seasonal monsoon rains usually start in June and continue until September, bringing bands of heavy rains from the southwest that quench fields, nourish crops, and replenish reservoirs. However, recent studies have shown that India's monsoons have become more erratic over the past decade due to the climate crisis, posing significant risks to critical sectors such as agriculture, water, and energy.
Last June, nearly half a million people in northeast India were affected by severe flooding after heavy rains battered the region.
"Because of climate change, you will get more extreme rain events, which means more rain in fewer rainy days or hours," Sunita Narain, director general of the Indian research body Centre for Science and Environment, said in a video post on YouTube last week.
"If you look at the data from across India, you will find that many weather stations are already reporting that they are breaking the record of 24-hour rainfall, which means that a city or region can get its annual rainfall, as much as a whole year’s rain, in a matter of a few days or even one day."
Going from water scarcity to floods is a "cycle that we are beginning to see more and more," Narain said, adding that it was an opportunity "to make a change."

In a separate video post on the importance of rainwater harvesting, Narain said, "The only way we can manage floods is by building drainage systems so that our rivers are drained into channels and ponds, allowing excess rain to be held and recharge groundwater for the dry season that comes after."

Tornado kills multiple people in Iowa as powerful storms again tear through Midwest (AP) Multiple people were killed when a tornado tore through Greenfield and left a wide swath of obliterated homes, crumpled cars and splintered trees, while outside the small town, massive wind turbines were buckled and twisted to the ground by the howling winds. After devastating the town of 2,000 residents, the storms moved eastward to pummel parts of Illinois and Wisconsin, knocking out power to more than 130,000 customers in the two states.
Renting Forever (NYT) Moving back and forth from Tennessee to Alaska, Michael Rogers and his wife Christy have twice been stuck simultaneously paying a mortgage and rent. Once, in 2006, the situation dragged on for eight months, finally ending when they sold their house in Tennessee for $20,000 below what they’d paid for it. Other adventures in homeownership ended well—the couple doubled their money after selling a fixer-upper. Then later, with another property, they had to pay out $30,000 to fix a mudslide around their home, a mistake caused by the builder. Two years ago, the Rogerses moved to Kingsport, in northeastern Tennessee, where they signed a lease on an apartment they thought would be a yearlong stopgap before buying again. The couple just renewed their lease for a third year, and have decided to remain renters for good. Mr. Rogers, a construction manager, likes the convenience of being able to move when a job calls. Either by choice or by being priced out of the market, many people have decided that renting forever is their best—or only—option. Housing costs and interest rates have risen in the last few years, and it can make financial sense to rent. In the 1960s, the median house price was a little over twice as much as the average income. It’s now nearly six times as much.
Haiti’s main international airport reopens nearly three months after gang violence forced it closed (AP) Haiti’s main international airport reopened Monday for the first time in nearly three months after relentless gang violence forced authorities to close it to all traffic in early March. The reopening of the Toussaint-Louverture airport in the capital of Port-au-Prince is expected to help ease a critical shortage of medications and other basic supplies since the country’s main seaport remains paralyzed. However, only Sunrise Airways, a local carrier, is flying in and out of Port-au-Prince for now. US-based airlines are not expected to start doing so until late May or early June. Before Monday’s reopening, the sole airport operating in Haiti was the one located in the north coastal city of Cap-Haitien. However, it was out of reach for many seeking to flee the country since the roads leading from Port-au-Prince to Cap-Haitien are controlled by gangs that have opened fire on cars and buses passing through.
France Issues Scratch-and-Sniff Baguette Postage Stamps (NYT) Joining the ranks of the screen goddess Brigitte Bardot and the Eiffel Tower, another French treasure is being celebrated with its own postage stamp: the baguette. And this one is scratch-and-sniff. The latest showcasing of French cultural heritage as Paris prepares to host millions of visitors for the Summer Olympics and Paralympics, the new stamp features a cartoon image of a baguette wrapped in a tricolor ribbon. It was unveiled by France’s postal service on Thursday—May 16, the feast day of Saint Honoré, the patron saint of bakers. Thanks to scratch-and-sniff technology, it will also transport “bakery fragrances” to those lucky enough to receive a letter from France.
Tourism a boon for Spain’s economy but a bane for some locals (Reuters) Fresh from a tour of Real Madrid’s glittering Santiago Bernabeu stadium in the Spanish capital, Guadalupe Rebollo says a holiday in Spain with her 15-year-old daughter is a better deal than one on the beach in her native Mexico. The Rebollos are part of a record surge in foreign visitors to Spain that is helping its economy outperform European peers and create jobs at a rapid rate. However, it is also straining services such as housing and transport and stirring resentment among locals. The tourism surge has helped put Spain, long the laggard among Europe’s big economies, into the lead, now outperforming the wider 20-country euro zone, which grew a scant 0.3% in the first quarter of 2024 compared to Spain’s 0.7%. Tourism accounted for 71% of real growth in the Spanish economy last year, according to tourism lobby group Exceltur. Consumption by non-residents accounted for nearly a third of Spain’s 2.5% growth in 2023, according to BBVA. But many Spaniards feel they are not reaping the benefits, and the driver of Spain’s success is increasingly being met with protests.
Russia presses forward with its offensive in northeastern Ukraine (AP) At least 11 people were reported killed in attacks in Ukraine’s war-ravaged northeast on Sunday as Russia pushed ahead with its renewed offensive. In the Kharkiv region, the focus of the offensive, the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office said six people were killed and 27 wounded in a Russian strike on the outskirts of the regional capital, also called Kharkiv. Regional Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said that five more people were killed and nine wounded in an attack on the region’s Kupiansk district, southeast of the regional capital. Russia’s Ministry of Defense said Sunday that its forces in the area were “continuing to advance into the depths of the enemy’s defense.” Ukraine’s General Staff said Russia had stepped up its attacks around Kharkiv and that the situation was “dynamic.”
Weather forecasters warn Pakistanis to stay indoors ahead of new heat wave (AP) Authorities in Pakistan on Tuesday urged people to stay indoors as the country is hit by an extreme heat wave that threatens to bring dangerously high temperatures and yet another round of glacial-driven floods. Pakistan’s most populous province, Punjab, is shutting all schools for a week because of the heat, affecting an estimated 18 million students. “The sweltering heat will continue this month,” said Zaheer Ahmed Babar, a senior official at the Pakistan Meteorological Department. He added that temperatures could reach up to 6 degrees Celsius (10.8 Fahrenheit) above the monthly average. This week could rise above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in many parts of the country, Babar said. It’s the latest climate-related disaster to hit the country in recent years. Melting glaciers and growing monsoons have caused devastating floods, at one point submerging a third of the country.
Global Tensions and a Hostile Neighbor Await Taiwan’s New Leader (NYT) Taiwan’s president, Lai Ching-te, was sworn into office on Monday, vowing to keep the island democracy safe in the face of Chinese pressure and wars raging abroad that have fed uncertainty over Western staying power. In his inaugural address, Mr. Lai was by turns conciliatory and unyielding on how the island should preserve its brittle peace with China, which claims Taiwan as its territory. He said he hoped to hold talks with Beijing. But he set out broad conditions that China’s leaders were unlikely to accept and vowed that Taiwan would keep building ties with fellow democracies as it fortified against China’s military buildup. Many Taiwanese people want stable relations with Beijing, and want Mr. Lai’s government to focus on fixing Taiwan’s economic and social ills. But even with strong bipartisan support from Washington, Taiwan faces a more perilous world, and a more powerful China, than when Mr. Lai’s predecessor, Tsai Ing-wen, took office in 2016.
Extreme turbulence (WSJ) One person died and at least 30 others were injured aboard a Singapore Airlines flight that encountered “sudden extreme turbulence” while en route from London to Singapore. The Boeing 777-300ER with 211 passengers and 18 crew on board was diverted to Bangkok, the airline said. The deceased was a 73-year-old Brit who had a history of heart problems and likely died from cardiac arrest, and seven of the injured were in critical condition, according to a Bangkok airport official. The airline said 18 people had been hospitalized. The turbulence occurred at 37,000 feet over the Irrawaddy Basin, an area largely located in Myanmar, according to Singapore Airlines.
Australia and New Zealand begin evacuating nationals from unrest in New Caledonia (AP) Australia and New Zealand sent airplanes to New Caledonia on Tuesday to begin bringing home stranded citizens from the violence-wracked French South Pacific territory. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said Australia had received clearance from French authorities for two flights to evacuate citizens from the archipelago, where indigenous people have long sought independence from France. New Zealand’s government also announced that it had sent a plane to New Caledonia to begin evacuating about 50 of its citizens. At least six people have died and hundreds more have been injured since violence erupted last week in New Caledonia following controversial electoral reforms passed in Paris.
Gazans ‘shackled and blindfolded’—claims (BBC) Medical workers in Israel have told our Middle East correspondent Lucy Williamson that ill and injured detainees from Gaza are routinely shackled to hospital beds, blindfolded, sometimes naked, and forced to wear nappies. These concerns centre on a military field hospital, at the Sde Teiman base in southern Israel. Since the October 7 Hamas attacks, Israeli forces have rounded up large numbers of Gazans and taken them to bases like Sde Teiman for interrogation. Suspected fighters are sent to Israeli detention centres, while many others are released back to Gaza without charge. One whistle-blower, who asked to remain anonymous, detailed how medical procedures were “routinely” carried out without painkillers, causing “an unacceptable amount of pain”. The Israeli army does not publish details of detainees but said those at the facility were treated “appropriately and carefully” and that violence against detainees was “absolutely prohibited”.
ANC’s unemployment challenge (BBC) The African National Congress (ANC) is facing its toughest ballot test since winning South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994. Opinion polls indicate support may fall below 50% for the first time, and unemployment is one of the biggest issues. South Africa’s latest jobless figures ticked up slightly to 33%—ranked by the World Bank as the worst of any nation. Among young people, it is even higher at 46%. Aged 37, Mondli Magwaza says he has never been employed and is looking for any job “because I’m desperate”. He is among those who have decided they will not vote for the ANC this time. Zara, 44, has no kind words for the ANC, a party she has always voted for after it led the campaign against white-minority rule: “Empty, empty promises.”
Giant Hail Is the Weather Threat Keeping Insurers Up at Night (Bloomberg) On May 9, hailstones the size of baseballs pummeled San Marcos and Johnson City, Texas, taking down power lines and cracking car windscreens. Only weeks before, hail pounded a solar farm in the state, damaging many panels. And in mid-March, grapefruit-sized hail pelted down from the skies over Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri, leading to damages on the ground exceeding $4 billion. For insurers, the first half of 2024 has underscored the growing threat posed by hail, which accounts for more and more of the industry’s losses in the US and Europe. In 2023, a year that set all sorts of weather records, not only were there 19 storms in the US that topped $1 billion in damage, there was an uptick in storms globally. Damages topped $64 billion, according to Swiss Re, the international reinsurance giant. And that’s insured damages only—not all damage is insured. High winds and heavy rains both play their parts in severe storm damage, but hail is the biggest single component, accounting for 50% to 80% of the total annually, Swiss Re says. Hail wrought so much destruction in 2023 that it’s led to a rethink in the insurance industry, said Karen Collins, a vice president at the American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA).

Menorca, the northernmost Balearic island, invites guests to unwind, slow down, and chill. The island is a fortress of peace with 216 km of shoreline, ranging from the gentle white sand beaches in the south to the jagged red coast in the north. Menorca is not a big island so it is best to get a car rental in Menorca and save a lot of time while exploring the beauty of the island.
This tiny island is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, beautiful waters, and abundance of flora and fauna. Menorca is a great location for those who appreciate nature because it has several protected areas, such as wetlands, marine reserves, and natural parks. We'll look at some of Menorca's top wildlife destinations in this blog.
Amazing Menorcan Wildlife Destinations
Nature park Albufera des Grau The Biosphere Reserve's central region is the 5,100-hectare Albufera des Grau Natural Park in northeastern Minorca. Numerous bird species, including herons, ducks, eagles, and ospreys, reside in the area. In addition to taking a guided tour to learn more about the park's flora and fauna, visitors can explore the park on foot or by bike from Menorca car hire.
Monte Toro
The highest point on Minorca, Mount Toro, provides views of almost the entire island. One of the most significant spiritual locations on the island is the shrine constructed at the peak and devoted to the Virgin of Monte Toro. The Menorcan owl, which is unique to the island, is one of the many bird species that call this area home. Other animals that can be seen by visitors include lizards, rabbits, and hedgehogs.
La Illa d'en Colom
La Illa d'en Colom is only 200 metres from Menorca's north coast, but this distance is sufficient to make it a refuge that is only accessible from the sea, making it a quiet and isolated place to enjoy a few hours of peace away from the bustle that predominates in other parts of the island during the summer.
Many bird species, including the Audouin's gull and the European storm petrel, can be found on the island, which is a protected area. To see the birds and other animals, including dolphins and sea turtles, tourists can take a boat tour across the island.
Es Grau
Es Grau is a beautiful village in Menorca that is well-worth visiting if you're seeking something different to do. This small village, which is found on the island's north shore, has a gorgeous beach as well as several charming attractions.
Only 7 miles from Mahón and can be visited by car and you get a car hire at Menorca airport, the little community of Es Grau provides all you'll need for a peaceful stay. While your children play on the shore, this is the ideal location to unwind and take it easy. Since the water is so shallow here, there is plenty of sand for them to discover on their own!
Cavalleria Lighthouse
The Cavalleria Lighthouse, which is situated in Menorca's northern region, provides breathtaking views of the coastline and the Mediterranean Sea. Numerous bird species, including Eleonora's falcon, the peregrine falcon, and the European shag, can be found in the region surrounding the lighthouse, which is a protected natural park.
The Isla des Porros can be seen in the distance from a cave nearby that is about 20 metres long. If you are sailing in this region, you may see the cave from the water. Sunsets are magnificent when viewed from here at dusk. The lighthouse's interior exhibit is 0definitely worth seeing.
Menorca is a beautiful place and has many places to visit on a small island. The best to explore the island is by renting a car or bike. The ideal way is to rent a car at Mahon airport so you do not have to be dependent on public transport and get your journey started as soon as you land on the island. To make your journey to the island more wonderful it's best to rent a car from Binicars Menorca Car. They are one the best car rental services on the island and provide you with the best car or bike to make your journey comfortable.

A train crash in eastern India on Friday was the country’s worst rail disaster in two decades, killing more than 270 people and renewing questions about rail safety in a country that has invested heavily in the system — relied on by millions of people every day — in recent years after a long history of deadly crashes.
At least 275 people are confirmed dead.
Two passenger trains collided around 7 p.m. local time Friday after one of them struck a stationary freight train at full speed and derailed in the Balasore District of Odisha State, according to an initial government report. At least 275 people were killed, according to the state government on Sunday, revising an earlier death toll of 288 after an official said some victims had been counted twice. More than 700 passengers were injured — 56 of them suffering “grievous” injuries.
In a preliminary assessment, officials say it began when the first of the two passenger trains struck the idled freight train at full speed, and then derailed. A second passenger train, heading in the opposite direction, then struck some of the dislocated cars. Officials are focusing on signal problems as the probable cause.
More than 2,200 passengers in all were onboard the passenger trains, according to railway officials, and at least 23 cars were derailed in the disaster. The force of the collision left cars so mangled that rescuers used cutting equipment to reach victims.
One of the trains was a Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express train, according to South Eastern Railway. The Coromandel Express service has been known for connecting the biggest cities on India’s east coast at a relatively high speed. The other passenger train was a Yesvantpur-Howrah Superfast Express train, running from a commuter hub in Bangalore to Kolkata, the capital of the eastern state of West Bengal.
India’s railway minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said that he had ordered an investigation into the cause and that those affected by the crash would receive compensation.
The train derailed near Balasore.
The crash occurred at Bahanaga Bazar station near Balasore, a city near the coast in northeastern Odisha State, which is known for its ancient temples and history as a 17th-century British seaport
Balasore is several hours by car to the nearest airport, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha’s capital. May is usually the hottest time of year, and daily high temperatures were around 100 Fahrenheit in the days before the crash.
The rescue operation was over by Sunday morning. Dozens of trains had been canceled but crews were rushing to restore service after pushing off the train cars involved in the crash off the tracks. The railway minister has said he expects service to resume by Wednesday at the latest.
Derailments have become less common.
Often referred to as the lifeline of India’s economy, the country’s vast rail network is one of the world’s largest, and is vital to lives and livelihoods in India, particularly in the more rural pockets. Nearly all of India’s rail lines, 98 percent, were built from 1870 to 1930, according to a 2018 study published in The American Economic Review.
The deadliest accident in the history of Indian rail is believed to have been in 1981, when a passenger train derailed as it was crossing a bridge in the state of Bihar. Its cars sank into the Bagmati River, killing an estimated 750 passengers; many bodies were never recovered.
Derailments were once frequent in India, with an average of 475 per year from 1980 to about 2002. They have become much less common, with an average of just over 50 a year in the decade leading up to 2021, according to a paper by railway officials presented at the World Congress on Disaster Management.
Rail safety more generally has improved in recent years, with the total number of serious train accidents dropping steadily to 22 in the 2020 fiscal year, from more than 300 annually two decades ago. By 2020, for two years in a row, India had recorded no passenger deaths in rail accidents — a milestone that the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed as an achievement. Until 2017, more than 100 passengers were killed every year.
Even so, deadly crashes have persisted. In 2016, 14 train cars derailed in India’s northeast in the middle of the night, killing more than 140 passengers and injuring 200 others. Officials at the time said a “fracture” in the tracks might have been responsible. In 2017, a late-night derailment in southern India killed at least 36 passengers and injured 40 others.
Friday’s accident was the deadliest at least since a collision in 1995 about 125 miles from Delhi that killed more than 350 people.
Modi has made improving transit a priority.
A main reason for the improved safety of the trains was the elimination of thousands of unmanned railway crossings, which Mr. Modi’s government said had been achieved in 2019. The relatively low-level engineering work of building underpasses and posting more signal conductors also drastically reduced crashes.
Mr. Modi has made it a priority to improve infrastructure, especially transportation systems, around the country. In recent years, the railroads, among the most visible projects for ordinary citizens, have received attention for a series of high-tech initiatives. Mr. Modi has been inaugurating electric medium-range trains and is building a Japanese-style “bullet train” corridor on the west coast to connect Mumbai with Ahmedabad.
On Saturday, though, instead of inaugurating a new train as scheduled, Mr. Modi visited the scene of the train wreck.
The train system, and especially train accidents, have long affected the fortunes of India’s politicians. The cabinet position of railway minister has been one of the most sought after posts because it is both high-profile and influential in business and industry. Suresh Prabhu, who is credited with designing New Delhi’s world-class subway system, was pressed into resigning from his post in September 2017, after a series of accidents.
Within hours of Friday’s disaster, some opposition politicians were already calling for the resignation of Mr. Vaishnaw, the railway minister.

Retiring in Treviso - tranquillity and Italian lifestyle just around the corner from Venice
Tumblr media
Canals of Treviso
Treviso is undoubtedly a hidden gem of the northeastern Italian region - Veneto. The city, also known as a little Venice due to its charming Buranelli Canals, stayed in the shadow of its world-famous neighbour for years. However, in the last 20 years, the capital of the Marca Trevigiana, as the locals often call the province, moved up from the 43rd to the 8th position on the list of the best Italian cities to live in by the national journal Il Sole 24ore. Meanwhile, Treviso has been discovered by tourists and expats looking for a spot where to enjoy a quiet glass of wine while gazing over one of the canals crossing through the historical centre. Therefore, when choosing the city as my new home, I was enchanted by its beauty but also attracted by its perfect location - it is positioned half an hour by train from Venice, in proximity to the breathtaking landscapes of the Italian Alps and a short car ride from one of the longest sandy coasts in North Italy.
Pros and Cons of living in Treviso.
Treviso has a lot of pros for someone looking for a place to enjoy a good life, cherish quality food and take advantage of good weather. Still, despite its charm, it can seem too small or provincial for someone looking to settle in a place with a cosmopolitan city vibe. The historical centre inside the city walls can be seen on foot in about a couple of hours. At the same time, its size can be considered an advantage. The city of around 85000 inhabitants has been regularly included in the top 10 on many lists of Italy’s safest places to live. The low level of crime makes it a perfect place for families and those looking to retire in a calm and peaceful environment.
Despite being small, Treviso is very well connected, with its own international airport and a large Venetian airport just half an hour away. Although Veneto is not the cheapest region of Italy, Treviso, being so close to Venice, makes it a bit more economical, free of tourist traps and overpriced coffee bars. Nowadays, when being environmentally conscious is a must, to its advantage, Treviso is known for its highly efficient waste management company - Contarina. It famously recycles twice the European average and produces five times less waste. Furthermore, northern Italy offers one of the best healthcare systems globally. The country also has the second-highest life expectancy at birth in Europe.
The best area in Treviso where to live.
For those with a substantial budget, the city’s historical centre makes a perfect location where to retire. The area near the Duomo, with classical architecture and lovely villas overlooking the canal surrounding the centre, small coffee shops and trendy bars, create a tranquil but never dull environment. However, if you are on a tighter budget, you should look for a place outside the city walls, which does not mean worse quality. The residential area of San Lazzaro, located just outside of the city centre, offers good services and an excellent selection of new constructions and buildings to be restored, which gives an opportunity to those who want to create their own space. San Zeno, Fiera or Sant’Antonino also offer attractive residential areas well connected to the city centre.
What is the culture like in Treviso?
Italians love to spend time sitting out, drinking coffee or sipping a glass of local, excellent wine, and the inhabitants of Treviso are by all means no different. You will see them spending an afternoon chatting or reading a daily newspaper while enjoying a glass of Prosecco, world-famous sparkling wine originally from Valdobbiadene, in the province of Treviso. You should, however, not confuse this ability to enjoy life’s pleasures with negligence. Treviso is also where many international businesses originated, such as Benetton, Sisley, Stefanel, Geox and De Longhi, to name just a few. In addition, small and medium company owners keep their businesses local, ensuring unemployment stays low, and the economy is steadily growing.
What languages are spoken and can you get by with English only?
Although you would be surprised to hear an English-speaking person on the streets of Treviso just a few years ago, the number of tourists and expats has increased greatly since then. You will also be able to get about using English at local restaurants and shops. Still, Italians will always look at you with a favourable eye if you can say a few other words than just Spritz or Ciao.
What is the climate like?
The Italian climate is supposedly one of the most pleasant in the world. Indeed, in Treviso, you cannot complain about the weather too much. The summers are hot, but most inhabitants spend the blazing days in rented or owned apartments in Jesolo, relaxing by the pool. The nearby Alps and the Dolomites also offer a refreshing holiday destination. Spring and autumn offer many sunny days and perfect temperatures, with November being probably the only rainy month during the year. Winters are sunny and moderately cold, giving an opportunity to take advantage of many ski resorts, such as the famous Cortina d’Ampezzo or Asiago.
How to get around the city? Do you need a car?
A big part of the city’s culture is cycling. Being relatively small, Treviso allows for the city’s centre to be easily visited on two wheels. Many nearby locations make a perfect cyclist destination, such as Restera, a pleasant path alongside the river Sile which takes you from the city’s centre to nearby Silea. If you are up for an extended cycle, Asolo, a charming mediaeval town popular amongst retired American expats, is an excellent destination for a day trip. Treviso is also home to Pinarello - a famous bicycle manufacturer whose bikes can be spotted used by winners of the Tour de France or Giro d’Italia.
Nonetheless, you may need a car if you want to go outside the city centre. Italians do not go anywhere without a car, and it is common for a family to have two or more vehicles. You can still manage just fine using public transport, but consider that the buses are not very frequent outside of popular routes. That said, Treviso is a great starting point if you want to travel more extensively around Italy - trains to all parts of the country depart daily from nearby Mestre.
Popular activities in Treviso.
Treviso is a historical city with narrow streets and ancient buildings, but there is much more to it than just captivating Italian architecture. There are some world-class museums for those who enjoy a bit of art. Well-curated Museo Civico di Santa Caterina, located beautifully in an old monastery, presents a rich collection of local art ranging from the Bronze Age to Rennesaince. Worth mentioning are also the newly renovated Museo Luigi Bailo, showing the city’s artists of the XX century, and Gallerie delle Prigioni, founded by the Fundazione Benetton in a former prison opposite the cathedral. The rich cultural offer is enhanced by Centro Carlo Scarpa, which proposes a wide range of activities related to the creations of the acclaimed architect. Treviso is also home to several festivals taking place throughout the year. There is a well-known Treviso Comic Book Festival in September, the literature festival CartaCarbone. Festival Letterario, the film festival Sole Luna Sguari Doc, and the Treviso Photography Festival. Each summer, by the city walls, the music festival Suoni di Marca takes place, which features famous Italian musicians from the region but not only. Additionally, fans of the sport will not be disappointed - Treviso has strong basketball and rugby teams, both supported by the Benetton Group.
What are popular local food dishes?
Tumblr media
Radicchio Trevisiano
You cannot talk about Italian culture without mentioning the food. Of course, northern Italian regions are famous for wine, but almost every city has its speciality. The province of Treviso is home to perhaps one of the most famous wines in the world - prosecco. This sparkling white wine is exquisitely produced in the hills between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene and the area of the nearby town of Asolo. Treviso is also famous for radicchio, also known as Italian chicory. This leaf vegetable is commonly used in Italian cuisine. Still, it is most popular in the area of Treviso, where in-season radicchio can be found everywhere, with many restaurants serving unique dishes with this dark red, bitter vegetable. Besides, Treviso is where tiramisu, one of the Italian national desserts, originated. The traditional recipe was created in the 1960s by Ado Campeol - the owner of the historical restaurant “At the Beccherie”. Apart from local specialities, in Treviso, you can enjoy famous Italian dishes at their best. Before you head out for dinner, a glass of Spritz, the popular aperitif made with sparkling wine and Aperol or Campari, served with ‘cicchetti’ or just a bowl of crisps, is not to be missed.

LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is a popular airport serving the New York City area and is located in the borough of Queens in northeastern Queens. If you're planning a trip to or from LGA and need transportation to or from Manhattan, consider hiring a car service.
There are many benefits to using a LaGuardia to manhattan car service for transportation between LGA and Manhattan. For one, it allows you to sit back and relax while someone else handles the driving. This can be especially helpful if you're unfamiliar with the area or if you simply don't want to deal with the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads.
Tumblr media
Another benefit of using a manhattan town car service between LGA and Manhattan is the level of convenience it provides. Most car services offer a wide range of vehicles to choose from, including luxury sedans, SUVs, and vans. These vehicles are equipped with comfortable seating and other amenities to make your ride as enjoyable as possible.
But perhaps the biggest benefit of using a town car service JFK to manhattan is the professionalism of the drivers. A boat journey to the Aeolian Islands departing from Tropea, Calabria
Southern Italy is rich in history, traditions, and flavors as well as an enchanting sea that surrounds spectacular landscapes. Follow us on our itinerary in which we will “sail” the southern Tyrrhenian Sea with our sailboat, (or catamaran or yacht for hire, that’s your choice!) following the route to the Aeolian Islands. What are we waiting for?
CONTACT YBH FOR YOUR BOAT JOURNEY IN THE AEOLIAN ISLANDS
Where are located the Aeolian Islands?
We are in Italy and precisely in the south of this beautiful country. The Aeolian Islands are an archipelago of 7 islands located off the northeastern coast of Sicily. They can be reached by sea with a few hours of navigation both from Sicily itself and from nearby destinations such as Tropea, a Calabrian town from which we will start our journey.
Why choose Tropea as a starting point for the Aeolian Islands?
The choice to sail from Tropea and not from another of the ports from which it is possible to reach the Aeolian Islands is due to its excellent tourist port equipped with all services. Tropea is also a seaside town rich in history, places of interest, beaches, and the sea among the best in Italy.
VIEW ALL THE BOATS BASED IN TROPEA
Alternatively, if you wish to leave from a different port, other marinas are available along the north coast of nearby Sicily such as Milazzo, Capo D’Orlando, and Portorosa.
What is the saying about the Tropea marina for embarking on the Aeolian Islands?
The Port of Tropea is located near the historic city center and has about 600 berths that can accommodate megayachts up to 55 meters in length. Its depths range from 3 to 5 meters deep and all moorings are equipped with water and electricity supply columns.
The Marina is equipped with all the necessary services to make your stay comfortable and reception always available.
How to reach our home base, Tropea?
Tropea is easily accessible by car from the main cities of southern Italy, but the best way to get here is by air, landing at the international airport of Lamezia Terme, only about 60 km from the center of Tropea.
Any advice? For this kind of journey, rely on a serious and reliable rental company. Our choice is Your Boat Holiday, a safety in boat rental thanks to its professionalism.
So let’s start the itinerary that leads us to the discovery of Tropea and the Aeolian Islands in seven days:
Day 1 – Discovering Tropea
Once get in the city it is a must to spend at least one day there.
The historic Tropea center is located high up, about 70 meters above sea level, and dominates the sea which it overlooks. It is characterized by a maze of alleys, streets, churches, noble palaces, panoramic terraces, and incredible sea views that suddenly open up while walking. Among the many things to see, we would like to point out the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola, located on a cliff overlooking the Aeolian Islands and the beach of Marina dell’Isola, made of white sand, overlooking the blue sea. From here you can reach the Grotta del Palombaro, which encloses a strip of sand lapped by turquoise waters at its feet.
Day 2 – From Tropea to Stromboli
We finally lift anchor and set sail for our first destination: the Stromboli island.
Stromboli is the most surprising of the Aeolian Islands, it is in fact a large active submerged volcano and is the ideal destination for excursions and trekking.
Famous for its explosive volcano that produces spectacular eruptions, earning it the nickname of the Mediterranean Lighthouse, Stromboli is located on the northernmost and easternmost island of the Aeolian archipelago. Suggestive and fascinating, Stromboli is nothing but the top of a large submerged active volcano where you can find wonderful black sand beaches, the most beautiful of the Aeolian Islands.
The main town is the homonyms Stromboli. It’s placed along the northeastern coast and is formed by the villages of San Vincenzo and San Bartolomeo, suggestive with their white houses set along the lower slopes of the volcanic crater. The second town, Ginostra, is a small village along the south-eastern coast that can only be reached by sea.
Day 3 – From Stromboli to Panarea
Panarea is the smallest and the lowest of the Aeolian islands. Just 3 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide, Panarea is a chic and worldly island. It is in fact frequented by wealthy tourists and personalities of the international jet set, who very often anchor their yachts along its coast.
Panarea is known for its thermal muds, black beaches, and wonderful sea. In addition, its whitewashed houses with blue doors and windows are reminiscent of the charm of the Aegean Sea Greek islands.
The small port of San Pietro, Ditella, and Drautto are the only centers on the island.
Day 4 – From Panarea to Salina
Very different from the other Aeolian islands, Salina is located in the central part of the Archipelago together with Lipari and Vulcano and is second in size.
It is divided into three municipalities, Santa Marina, the main port of the island to the south, Malfa to the north, and Leni to the southwest.
Salina is a green island much loved by families thanks to its tranquility.
Among the most famous beaches, we find the black beach of Rinella, surmounted by caves carved into the rock, and the bay of Pollara located inside an ancient crater that has largely collapsed.
In Salina, excellent wines are produced including the unmissable Malvasia, a sweet and aromatic wine.
Day 5 – Day 6 – From Salina to Lipari
Lipari is the largest of the 7 islands that make up the Aeolian archipelago and from a tourist point of view, it is the most developed. For this reason, we decide to dedicate two whole days to it.
With its rugged coasts along which unique beaches, wide bays, and deep caves follow one another, Lipari seems made to be discovered by boat.
Its plateaus are ideal for trekking while its cliffs overlooking the sea offer splendid views. For these and other reasons, Lipari is a very popular destination for tourists from all over the world.
Lipari town is the main transport hub between the Aeolian Islands. The center is dotted with shops, restaurants, and bars while in the ancient Palazzo dei Vescovi, adjacent to the Cathedral of San Bartolomeo, there is an important Aeolian archaeological museum.
Spiaggia Bianca is the most famous island beach: located about 4 kilometers north of Lipari town and just beyond the village of Canneto, the beach owes its name to the spectacular expanse of pumice powder that makes it up.
Day 7 – From Lipari to Vulcano
Vulcano is one of the most evocative of the Aeolian Islands, with its fumaroles, black sand beaches, sulfurous muds, and jets of steam.
Among the main attractions are the thermal mud pool, the Sabbie Nere beach from where you can admire the splendid sunsets on the island of Filicudi, and the beach of Gelso.
Vulcano has a unique nature suitable for wonderful excursions. If you love walking, reach Capo Grillo, heading north, and admire astonishing views of the nearby islands while reaching the Fossa della Fucina, on top of the volcano, you will feel like you have set foot in a lunar landscape.
Finally, don’t miss the Grotta del Cavallo, with its extraordinary play of lights and colors.
