Wednesday 23th October 2024
It sometimes takes us by surprise when something small can bring so much pleasure. One such example might be found with the pedestrian crossing set-up here on crossroads; and there are a lot of those due to the grid system. When the little green man light shows, and he is on a four road junction, it is permitted to cross DIAGONALLY! It's great, you can do that all day long I'd you want.
A trip into Coles (round the corner down Peel) this morning, you realise that the Aboriginal population is out in force. They are sensible enough to avoid the midday and afternoon sun.
Today we took a taxi to the airport to collect our rental car that will take us 2500kms across the outback to Townsville. Our first stop is in Kakadu National Park for seven nights, but our accommodation is, well, basically a tent with glass doors, king size bed so not really roughing it, but doesn't have cooking facilities. So we are stocking up with loads of water, wine and anything edible that does not require cooking or chilling. That rules out Tim Tams for obvious reasons in this heat. Thankfully, the next stop has all the kit and caboodle so we will be able to cook again. We booked the car on-line at home through a company called holidaycars.com. Now I know that sounds dodgy but they use Europcar to actually provide said vehicle. In our defence for such a rush of madness was that few rentals would be happy to take their expensive vehicle thousands of kilometres and dump it there far from home. They did, but what surprised me most was when we showed up at the Europcar stand at Darwin airport, they actually gave us a car. I say car but this is an enormous lump of tin. It's a Ford Ranger pickup. Huge it is but still petite compared with some of the 4x4 outback offroaders with cow bars on the front. Transaction complete, the little desk clerk suggested that we might seriously want to carry some weapon with us, you know, he said, just in case. Not necessarily a gun, perhaps a bat or a large spanner? I mean what is out there? Are we talking animal or human here I asked. He pursed his lips.
We shall be sad to leave Darwin. It's a great town. Small town, big community. We watched a man in high vis pressure washing 10 meters of pavement this morning. It took him 1.5 hrs. Pretty good, just a mile and a half left to do. It's almost like they find things for people to do! After sorting this admin, we went for a Guinness in Shenannigans. Irish pubs are all over the world! As the barmaid poured it I enquired if it were genuine Liffy water. A rather blank look came upon her as she said she could find out.
Our first visit here was on the cruise ship in 2016. I remember so well stepping ashore onto Australian soil for the very first time and feeling the thrill of achieving something that I'd wanted for so long. When we were back on board, I clearly remember the band playing by the ship's swimming pool and the lyrics:
I've been to cities that never close down
From New York to Rio and old London town
But no matter how far or how wide I roam
I still call Australia home.
Australians are so much more patriotic and home loving than any other nation on earth. This song was sung at the closing ceremony of the 1994 Sydney Olympics I believe. Right up there with Waltzing Matilda.
ps. I wanted to secure a Tee shirt with The Top End emblazoned across it. So I popped into an establishment in The Mall, and when asked if they had such a garment she kind of looked down her nose and said no, try the tourist shop across the road. Clearly I'm not in the snappy dresser category.
pps There is a sogn in tue kitchen that says 'When cooking always operate the extractor fan since there's a $1400 charge on calling the fire brigade out'! Wow, does it extract flames?
ppps Tomorrow we set off deeper into the Northern Territories to Kakadu National Park and the Ourback where Crocodile Dundee was filmed. We are not entirely sure what the WiFi or mobile reception will be, so further posts could be affected.

Thursday, August 1 - Broome to sailing away
We got up shortly after sunrise, packed our bags, cleaned up our apartment, and were on our way towards downtown Broome by 9 AM. We checked out the hotel where we were supposed to leave our bags and also later take our shuttle from, and they were just finishing setting up when we arrived and we were able to leave our bags earlier than we thought. We found out we were scheduled on the 12:30 bus, which gave us a few hours to explore more of Broome.
We had seen many of the highlights the day before, and most of Broome today is jewelry stores selling pearls, and t-shirt an.d souvenir shops. The rebuilt metal sided buildings resembled many of the cruise port shopping areas in the Caribbean - even Chinatown was mostly tourist traps. The one interesting place was the Sun movie theater, which I had read about before. It's over 100 years old, and has been in continuous operation since 1916. The front area is open air, but covered, but the screen and seating are in an open courtyard. They currently show first-run movies - a double feature every evening. In the "lobby" they have lots of old projectors and publicity displays from the golden era of movies. It would have been fun to take in a show, but it was far from our apartment, and we were just too tired the first night, and riding camels the second.
Wandering around town, it's hard to believe there would be enough traffic and sales to keep at least 10 pearl jewelry stores in business, especially since many of the ships that cruise here only don't for several months in their winter. Cable Beach is also popular for tourists, but it's on the other side of the peninsula, and has its own tourist infrastructure. While we were downtown we did check out the original jetty used by the pearl industry - now the area is so silted up it would be impossible to get boats to dock there.
Unlike yesterday's cloudy morning, today it was sunny and getting quite hot, so we decided we had seen enough, and took our car back to the rental car facility, and then walked back over to our meeting hotel. Here there was now a hospitality room, where we waited for our bus. Just before we were called for our bus, we were overlooking the mangroves and saw a bird called the Rainbow Bee-eater - one of the most colorful birds we have seen so far in Australia.
The rest of the day was a bit of a whirlwind - bus to the port, very easy check-in on the ship, and then the unpacking is and settling in, combined with orientation for tomorrow's excursion. We are in an early group, and so decided to have our dinner at the sushi bar up in "the Club", and then get to bed early. Being the sister ship to the one we took to Australia, we already knew where everything was on board.
Quick explanation of some of the photos - the drag bingo sign was outside a bar - it does appear legitimate. The pie shop sign was near the airport, and really did do drive thru pies - a new one to us. The big tree is a baobab - there are lots planted around town.
We are in the first group to go out tomorrow on our Zodiac excursion, so will get a good night's sleep. One of the things they have chosen to do on the ship is change immediately to the time in Darwin, where we will be on the 11th. By moving our clocks forward 1-1/2 hours (yes, it's one of those crazy time zones) we will be able to shift sunrise and sunset later, and have sunrise at a more humane 7:45, and the sunset around 7, rather than 5:30. Tomorrow should be an interesting day.

1993 Mazda 626ES Is as Smooth as a Ken Doll
From the September 1992 issue of Car and Driver.Whoever said “competition improves the breed” (was it Charles Darwin? Charles Barkley? Charlie the Tuna?) perfectly captured the action in today’s mid-size four-door-sedan market. No-quarter competition is breeding a high order of automotive excellence. Our recent family four-door face-off (“Solid-Citizen Sedans,” June 1992) confirmed that this category’s […] The post 1993 Mazda 626ES Is as Smooth as a Ken Doll appeared first on CAR RENTAL NEWS. https://car-rental.news-6.com/1993-mazda-626es-is-as-smooth-as-a-ken-doll/

Reading about Tony Tether's tenure as DARPA director (June 2001-February 2008). He seems like he'd make a great TED Talk speaker.
Over [...] three weeks, Tether and a handful of office directors worked days, nights, and weekends to prepare to brief the vice president. Cheney “was a person who liked pictures, he is a very visual person,” Tether recounted. “So, having a slide with a whole bunch of words on it was just, ‘oh, wow,’ you don’t ever do that to him. You know, you give him a cartoon.” Tether recounted that he wanted something that would blow the vice president away, and so the cartoon he chose for Cheney was Superman.
The headlining act for the vice president would be super soldiers [...] humans who could survive severe blood loss in suspended animation, soldiers who could go for days without food or sleep, and warriors enhanced with superhuman strength and mental abilities.
Just two miles from the burning Pentagon, a small DARPA-financed laboratory on Washington Boulevard, across from the army’s Fort Myer, had been quietly rehearsing terrorist scenarios for senior defense and intelligence officials, trying to convince them that terrorist attacks could be detected well before they are perpetrated. The key was to sift through vast amounts of data—both public information and intelligence records—to identify patterns of activities that might indicate that terrorists were preparing an attack. The intelligence data could be from intercepted phone calls, e-mails, or Internet traffic. The public data might include credit card transactions, doctor visits, and car rental records. The laboratory was designed to demonstrate what could be done if all of that data could be linked together and treated as a single database.
The “laboratory” was all smoke and mirrors, at least in the fall of 2001. A Hollywood set designer had been hired to create the futuristic-looking command-and-control center with large, sleek display screens and flashing lights. The humming computers were not churning any real data. There was research going on at companies and universities, but the laboratory was just a showcase to convince intelligence officials that data, or more important, spotting patterns in data, could help predict the next terrorist attack.
DARPATech, the semiannual DARPA conference, had once been a staid technical meeting held in cities like Denver and Dallas, but Tony Tether wanted to make a public splash, so in 2002 he moved the venue to Disneyland in California. “We have had a lot of fun creating this symposium,” Tether said in the keynote speech. “Part of the fun was each office finding a Disneyland-like theme for what it does.” (The theme for the Information Awareness Office featured the Star Wars androids, C-3PO and R2-D2.) [---]
Over his nearly eight years as agency director, Tether would hold all four DARPATech conventions at Disneyland, featuring speeches punctuated by Star Wars theme music and schwag that included DARPA-embellished playing cards, custom DARPA-logo golf balls, and T-shirts decorated with armed drones. “Welcome to our world!” Tony Tether said, beaming to the audience in the opening ceremony in March 2004. “A world where science fiction morphs into reality.”
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the technology for detecting neural signals was rudimentary; forty years after that initial DARPA program, the technology had evolved, but scientists still disagreed over the interpretation of those signals. For example, scientists had developed better ways to detect the P300, a brain signal that occurs about three hundred milliseconds after a stimulus, like a specific sight or sound. Yet DARPA’s vision for augmented cognition assumed that such brain signals, which were still being studied in the lab, could be used to start immediately building the equivalent of mind-reading caps for the military. It was science fiction, quite literally.
To illustrate its vision, the agency enlisted the services of Alexander Singer, a Hollywood television director best known for the new Star Trek series, Deep Space Nine, to create a half-hour mini-film depicting augmented cognition. The video, inspired by the Star Trek holodeck, opened with lingering shots of groundbreaking scientists: Charles Darwin, father of evolution theory; B. F. Skinner, famous for operant conditioning; and Hans Berger, inventor of electroencephalography. It then flashed to DARPA’s Dylan Schmorrow, credited as the father of augmented cognition. The science fiction story line featured a cyber-security officer, Claudia, who must head off a cyber attack designed to destabilize Africa. Claudia is outfitted with a headpiece that monitors her cognitive state, and the computer parses out information to speed her decisions, with occasional interruptions by a Yoda-like cyber chief teleconferenced in from a fishing vacation. “We may be looking at an anomaly, big time,” Claudia declares.

Easy Free Classified Ads Posting
Some people who could be taking great advantage of what free classified ads postings can do for their business have avoided it due to feeling intimidated by so many boxes to fill in. Others feel a bit insecure about putting personal information into an ad listing. However, it should be reassuring to know two things then.
Creating an Ad is Simple as long as you have all of the needed information that you will need to include on the ad.
Posting an ad for the first time can take about 30 minutes, after that, if you have your settings correct, future ads will only take 10 minutes or so.
Once you are used to what it takes to get an ad posted and accustomed to the format or dashboard you use to post in, you will soon become a pro and throwing out your ads onto the net and receiving substantial results back.
Offline Businesses Too!
Do not limited the classified ad world to only housing those who have online businesses. Offline business such as antique stores, car shops or rental businesses, a tattoo shop or even a pet store may have a good outlet on free classified ad sites to post their wares in the area most local to them along with directions to their business. You do not even have to own a computer to do this method of marketing. As long as you have access to one for about 30 minutes per week, once your speed has increased you should be able to post three per sitting. You can literally just set it, forget it and watch the customers come to you.
Take Advantage!
It would be a literal waste to let this kind of free advertising pass you by regardless of the nature of your business. There are businesses that actually run more than half of their profits.. or more, from simple classified ads alone.

While Darwin is complete with desert spaces and dry lands, you might find some respite in the creeks and beaches hidden deep inside this land. While the dry days do allow you to enjoy the swimming holes and creeks, there are months when the dryness is at its peak. You may not be allowed inside these swimming creeks during this period. It is important to have a campervan rental Darwin when you visit these creeks so that you can camp out at night.
