Legendary manga and anime creator Leiji Matsumoto has passed away on February 13, 2023 at age 85 due to heart failure.
Some of his notable works include Space Battleship Yamato, Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, and Queen Emeraldas. He also collaborated with Daft Punk to supervise several animated music videos for their Discovery album, and the videos were strung together into the Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem film.

Some sad news to share, friends - Leiji Matsumoto, the iconic creator of Space Battleship Yamato (aka Starblazers), Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, and many more, has passed away at the age of 85. A manga artist since the 50s who originally got his start in shoujo manga, Matsumoto’s works were a cornerstone of early anime fandom. American sci-fi fans of the 70s may not have known the terms “anime”, “manga”, or “cosplay”, but they knew and loved Matsumoto’s work, which was many fan’s first exposure to anime back in the day. One of the first recorded “cosplay” gatherings in the US was of fans dressed as mostly Leiji Matsumoto characters!
In other parts of the world, they also fell in love with Matsumoto’s work: as in France, where Harlock was known as Albator, and won the hearts of many fans. So much so that Matsumoto won many prestigious awards there, and would eventually be knighted in 2012 by the French government. French electronic duo Daft Punk was highly influenced by his work, and in 2001 collaborated with Matsumoto to release anime music videos (and eventually a feature-length film version called Interstella 555).
Modern anime & manga owe much to his work, as he was THE pioneer of space opera and what he liked to call “boy’s romance” stories--”romance” in the literarily sense--full of angst, heroism, and fighting for independence while celebrating nature, brotherhood, and friendship. He helped many people learn to never give up on themselves and their dreams, no matter how fantastical they may seem.
May his spirit travel on, in a new adventure in the endless sea of stars.

Here's a sketch I made a day or so ago, featuring stuff happening on the Legendary Battleship Halberd. I like to think Trident and Mace Knight were training and testing out a more volatile weapon (Maybe exploding tridents? Exploding mace?) and then 𝕂𝔸𝔹𝕃𝕆𝕆𝔼𝕐 an explosion in the lower hull occurs. All of this happening as Captain Vul and Sailor Waddle Dee are going over some blueprints, maybe an update to the cargo hold, and Meta Knight is being asked a question by Axe Knight. You just know Meta Knight would let out a complete shocked, angry, and exasperated "GUH?! WHAT IN STARS NAME???"
Anyways, let's talk art. Anytime I post something here on this account, I like to accompany it with some self-critique. I don't draw a lot of perspective drawings. I'm not very good with perspective. I can do simple perspective drawings, but I'm not very good with more advanced ones. I want to fix that so I can draw more perspective drawings, especially interiors, so I've downloaded a tool to practice with, it's called the Perspective Box Object by Pharan! It's super helpful and makes drawing all sorts of perspectives, interiors especially, a bit easier. It gives you a good idea on how to map things out in a 3D space too! When drawing, I wanted to test out drawing various characters and one object at different distances and angles!Personally, I really loved how The Legendary Battleship Halberd came out. I did use a STL as a reference by having it posed and angle in a separate window, I think using 3D objects as a reference is fine but it should never become a crutch or the only way you can draw that object! The checkerboard texture of the PBO makes it very easy to map out and get an idea of how close and how distant something is from the camera. I admit, right here Meta Knight looks a bit wonky and I believe that's because he's not correctly placed in the scene? If he were closer it would look better but where he is it would be better if we saw the slightest sliver of the top of his head considering the floor. I don't know. I want to finish this sketch so I might re-draw Meta Knight? Maybe not. I don't know. I also believe Captain Vul and Sailor should be a bit smaller too.

Something I really love about Leiji is the way he wasn't afraid of empty space. He doesn't fill outer space with sparkles and stars and galaxies. It's just empty. It really expands the sense of scale.

I also love when Harlock's ship descends to the bottom of the sea and goes down, down, down for several pages just to emphasize how far underwater they have to go.
He could've filled the descent panels with little Easter eggs like jellyfish and sunken boats and things like that, or had a character say that the journey took a long time, but he drew all that emptiness.
