1-Star Trek:The Motion Picture (1979). 2-Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982). 3-Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984). 4-Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986). 5-Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989). 6-Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991).
1-Star Trek: Generations (1994). 2-Star Trek: First Contact (1996). 3-Star Trek: Insurrection (1998). 4-Star Trek: Némesis (2002).
1-Star Trek (2009). 2-Star Trek Into Darkness (2013). 3-Star Trek Beyond (2016).

Excerpt from this story from Smithsonian Magazine:
Long absent from Yosemite National Park, peregrine falcons are making a comeback with help from some unlikely allies: rock climbers.
Rock climbers and peregrine falcons could easily be at odds, since they both flock to the sheer granite cliffs of the 1,169-square-mile California park. The presence of climbers can disturb nesting falcons, and rock climbing is listed as a potential threat to the species. But instead, humans and birds have forged a unique partnership that has allowed peregrine falcons to flourish after decades of decline.
This week, the National Park Service and the Yosemite Conservancy provided an update on the peregrine falcon recovery within the park. In the spring of 2024, naturalists counted 17 breeding pairs—a nearly 113 percent increase from the eight pairs counted in 2009—as well as 15 nests and 25 chicks. Since 2009, 51 total nesting sites located within Yosemite have produced 385 baby birds.
“Peregrines are at the top of the food chain and the most susceptible to contamination,” says Frank Dean, president of Yosemite Conservancy, to the San Francisco Chronicle’s Sam Whiting. “So to have them bounce back to this degree is a sign of the health of the entire Yosemite ecosystem.”
Peregrine falcons are the world’s fastest animal, reaching speeds of up to 200 miles per hour when they dive from great heights to catch their prey. These majestic birds live on every continent except Antarctica, seeking out rocky cliffs to build their nests and raise their young.
Once abundant around the world, their numbers began to dwindle after World War II because of the use of pesticides like dieldrin, aldrin and DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane). Dieldrin and aldrin are toxic and killed the birds outright, while DDT weakened chicks’ eggshells, lowering their odds of survival.
At the behest of the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group, climbers once again scaled El Capitan writes the Mercury News’ Lisa M. Krieger—but this time, they collected samples of eggshells from the nest and brought them back down for testing.
The eggs were delicate and thin, so researchers decided the best course of action was to incubate them in a laboratory, then return the hatchlings to the nest. Rock climbers helped with this, too, much to the chagrin of the protective peregrine falcon parents: As the climbers carefully removed eggs or replaced chicks, the falcons dive-bombed them—one bird even struck a climber’s backpack.
“Just when I thought I was going to die, they would flare their wings above my neck and glide off, just inches from me,” says Ken Yager, one of the climbers who helped with the efforts and the founder of the Yosemite Climbing Association, to the Mercury News.
Yager’s story illustrates how climbers were willing to “risk all” to help the birds, as Rob Roy Ramey II, a biologist and climber who helped with the project, told Outside’s Ula Chrobak in 2018.

DAUGHTERS OF AHMED I AND MURAD IV
Ahmed I had six daughters who reached adulthood: Gevherhan, Ayşe, Fatma, Hanzade, Atike and Ümmügülsüm.
Gevherhan Sultan was Ahmed I’s eldest daughter; married twice to Ökuz Mehmed Pasha and Topal Recep Pasha. She died before 1631. I believe that Ragusian report of 1642 mentioning Ibrahim’s sister as sultana moglie di Mustafa Pascia detta Guiheri was mistaken for Hanzade(?). Again, in Osmanli devltinde kim kimdi it is clearly stated that Hanzade married Mustafa Pasha in 1643. So, it stays as a questionmark...
Atike Sultan was Ahmed I’s daughter born in late 1600s. She was married at the beginning of the reign of Murad IV to Koca Kenan Pasha, and eventually in 1652 to Doğancı Yusuf Pasha (Turhan personaly take care of chosing husband for her). I have just problem detecting year of her death; source claim 1672/74 (but I would say it was when Turhan’s daughter Atike died). One source Atatürk konferansları suggest her death date as 1660. Anyway, it seems that historians were unable to bifurcate daughter of Ahmed I and Ibrahim I, and they mixed them with each other at times…
Ayşe Sultan’s marriages are well dated and known. Exept two things: she married Hafiz Ahmed Pasha in 1622 (which I will prove in discussion below) and we don’t know who was her husband in early 1650s. Her last husband was Mustafa Pasha. She died in 1656.
Ümmügülsüm Sultan was born either in 1610 or 1617. Her only known husband during reign of Murad IV was some Halil Pasha. I maybe have found something about him by Süreyya Mehmed Bey:
Halil Paşa - Enderun'dan yetişip mîrahûr-ı evvel olmuştu. 1048 'de (1638/ 39) veziriik verilerek Bağdadim fetih müjdesini İstanbura getirmiştir. Ardından saltanat değişikliği dolayısıyla gözden düşmüş olarak veffat etmiştir.
She was remarried in 1641 to governor of Herzegovina Ahmed Pasha. This marriage was also recognised by Kamil von Behr, and he referred to her as Patti Sultana. She was presented gifts as his wife in 1642, 1648 and 1655. Even she didn’t continue to receive Ragusian gifts, she was still alive during reign of Süleyman II, being alive in 1688, when she started to receive visits of Katherine Trumbull, wife of an English ambassador. On such visits, Katherine was able to collect news from the Ottoman court, such as the rumour in July 1690, later disproved, that Sultan Mehmed had died.
FATMA SULTAN
I would strongly suggest that not all marriages of Ahmed I’s daughter Fatma Sultan are oficially known. Evliya Çelebi mentioned that Fatma had twelve husbands before Melek Ahmed Pasha. I think that I am only person in this world that would claim now that his claims wasn’t sarcastic and that he was telling truth. Now, ambassador’s report from 1st April of 1622 claimed that Sultan Osman succeeded to marry his half-sisters Ayşe Sultan and her younger sister, and that he plans to marry third sister soon (Gevherhan was already married to Recep Pasha):
In work An Examination of Daily Politics and Factionalism at the Ottoman Imperial Court in Relation to the Regicide of Osman II (r.1618-22) (p. 66) author, using the same report, succeed to identify husbands of these Sultanas:
In late March 1622, the sultan married Ayşe Sultan, the ex-wife of former Grand Vizier Nasuh Pasha, to the Governor of Van, Hafız Ahmed Pasha, and his other sister, to the Governor of Damascus, Murtaza Pasha.
This is great, because the Sultana who was married to this Murtaza Pasha was (as Venetian report says) younger than Ayşe, and I would certainly say that this was Fatma’s first husband. The third one who was planned to be given in marriage to Murtaza Pasha’s son was most probably Hanzade. To remind you, Gevherhan was married for Recep Pasha at the time.
P.S. Who was daughter of Kosem Sultan refferend in letter she prepared for pasha in 1626 after she sent her daughter Fatma? She was never named. Historians made wrong assumption that it was Ayşe Sultan, because Hafiz Ahmed Pasha was Grand Vizier at the time, and they lacked information when did she married him, and with their free will chose is was Ayşe. I would made an assumption that she was most probably Ümmügülsüm. But still, we don’t know who this Pasha was…
At the beginning of reign of Murad IV, one of his sisters married Şehid Ali Pasha (d. 1624) (see Sakaoglu). This also was most probably Fatma, as her sisters Ayşe, Hanzade and Gevherhan had established husbands (Hafiz Ahmed Pasha, Bayram Agha and Topal Recep Pasha). According to Hammer, Atike was married before 1627 to Kenan Pasha who was seventh vizier in Divan. And please don’t ask me in which work, but I also found that Evliya stated that Grand Vizier Kemankeş Kara Ali Pasha married sister of Murad IV. I remember I was shocked, but I hope I will find again that same statement. Anyway, there is one more thing said in Demetrius Cantemir’s book The History of the Growth and Decay of the Ottoman Empire about one of Murad IV’s sister which occupied my mind, and made me think that it was about Fatma, because of her well-known greedy character:
Murad IV’s sister had four husbands in one year, and not the one of the marriages was celebrated according to the custom. They were accused of some crime, and put to death by the emperor, and their riches with all their effects assigned indeed to the Sultana as their law-wife…
Her (first officialy known) new husband was Çatalcalı Hasan Pasha, whom she married in 1624. She forcefully divorced him, as Murad IV’s was disturbed by Kösem’s extensive support for Hasan Pasha. Anyway, he continued his duties and even became Kapudan Pasha until he was poisoned by Recep Pasha in 1631, or rumour does say so (source: İstanbul armağanı, p. 117). After divorce, she was married in the same year to governor of Egypt Kara Mustafa Pasha, who was executed by Murad IV because of some action contrary to the law of God.
In work Fatma Sultan: A Sultana in the Shadow of Passion and Wealth on page 255, author cites source which claims she was married in 1629 to Sarraç Mustafa Pasha. Possibly.
I would now stress out that Fatma married Canpoladzade Mustafa Pasha in 1632. But between him and Sarraç Mustafa Pasha, she definitely had one more marriage. I will give you Venetian source I found in Vesna Miović’s work (p. 188, n. 258):
As you see, Fatma was promissed to Kapudan Pasha (you fill find out Canpoladzade Mustafa Pasha was Kapudan Pasha from October 1630 until July 1632 if you check the right sources) in October of 1631, before she married him in 1632. But the most interesting thing is that, when she was promised to him, she was widow of governor of Skopje who died at summer of 1631. This guy’s identity was Kaçanikli Mehmed Pasha, who was really governor of Skopje and died in 1631.
As you all know, Canpoladzade Mustafa Pasha was executed in 1636. With him, she had sons Hüseyin and Süleyman. After his death, in 1637, she remarried Koça Yusuf Pasha (in 1638 records mentioned as his wife) and stayed with him in marriage until his death in 1658. They even had son, Ömer.
Her last three marriages were with Melek Ahmed Pasha, Kanbur Mustafa Pasha and Közbekçi Yusuf Pasha. But I would suggest she had at least a marriage between Yusuf Pasha’s death in 1658 and marriage with Ahmed Pasha in 1662.
According to work Fatma Sultan: A Sultana in the Shadow of Passion and Wealth, on page 256, we find out that Fatma Sultan died in 1671, most possibly during March:
Fatma Sultan 1671 yılında yaklaşık 66 yaşında vefat etti. Kaynaklarda Fatma Sultan’ın ölüm tarihiyle ilgili net bir bilgiye yer verilmemiş, genellikle Kozbekçi Yusuf Paşa ile evliliğinden sonra öldüğü ifade edilmiştir. Ölüm sebebi belli değildir. Terekesinde satılacak mücevherlerin kaydedildiği tarih 14 Zilkade 1081/25 Mart 1671 olarak gösterilmiştir (TSMA.d. 10457/124). Fatma Sultan’ın tasarrufunda bulunan Manastır kazası paşmaklık hassı 1671 yılının Mart ayından itibaren Haseki Sultan’a verilmiştir (MŞS. 21: 72, 75). Kabri, babası Sultan I. Ahmed’in türbesindedir (Mehmed Süreyya, 1996, s. 14)
Beside Ahmed I’s daughters, there were several unknown marriages of daughters of Murad IV. In Angelo Alessandri’s report from 1637, he says Murad IV had eleven-year-old daughter he intends to marry to Silahdar Mustafa Pasha. Additionally, it is known that thirteen-year-old daughter of Murad IV was married to Tüccarzade Mustafa Pasha in 1640 (Sakaoglu, Alderson). Now, what if I tell you that Silahdar Mustafa Pasha and Tüccarzade Mustafa Pasha were the same person? See this: https://www.suvakfi.org.tr/cesme/adalar/kaptan-i-derya-tuccarzade-silahdar-musahip-mustafa-pasa-cesmesi-h-1048-m-1638
Tüccarzade Silahdar Mustafa Pasha was executed in 1642 (not 1641 as Sakaoglu claims) as governor of Timisoara. Also, work Life After the Harem: Female Palace Slaves, Patronage and the Imperial Ottoman Court , p. 83, says:
According to Naima, in 1642, the sword bearer, husband of Kaya Sultan (daughter of Murad IV) was murdered.
All in all, I want to point to fact that Kaya Sultan was the eldest daughter of Murad IV, born in 1627, who married Mustafa Pasha in 1640 until his execution. She remarried in 1644 to Melek Ahmed Pasha. I am conversant with statements of her being born in 1633, which I strongly evaluate as UNRELIABLE.
Only Öztuna claimed of Murad IV’s daughters, Hanzade Sultan and Gevherhan Sultan, married in August 1645. Hanzade married Nakkaş Mustafa Pasha (d. 1657; different from same-named husband of Hanzade’s same-named aunt, but this Nakkaş Mustafa Pasha died in 1653 – again, I am SUSPICIOUS about this), and Gevherhan Sultan, who married Haseki Mehmed Pasha (who actually married to Turhan’s daughter Ayşe Sultan in 1653). As Haseki Mehmed Pasha remarried in 1553 to daughter of Ibrahim, Gevherhan died before (even before 1648, as she didn’t receive gifts from Ragusians). Hanzade existed, she was still alive in 1662, and was at the time married to some vizier Musa Pasha.

Anyway, Hanzade Sultan (daughter of Ahmed I or eventually Murad IV) really had a son with Nakkaş Mustafa Pasha. From judicial report in 1685:

Next very interesting daughter of Murad IV was Rûkiye Sultan. She was born in early 1630s, as she married around 1640s to Küçük Musa Pasha. Musa Pasha was mistaken to be husband of daughter of Ahmed I, Abide Sultan – who didn’t exist. Abide Sultan was daughter of Murad III and wife of Muslu Agha, and Rûkiye was Küçük Musa Pasha’s wife. She received gifts in 1648 as his widow. Rûkiye Sultan was mentioned by Ragusians in 1655 (source: Acta et Diplomata Ragusina) as Ruchie sultana, moglie di Telak Mustafa passa. Also, in 1662, she received gifts as Rukie Sultana moglie di Zelak Mustai Passa, the same guy. I succeeded to figure out his identity, he was Dellak Mustafa Pasha. And very interestingly, Dellak Mustafa Pasha was executed in 1662 by orders of Mehmed IV. It seems that it is right information that Rûkiye Sultan was remarried in 1663 (Sakaoglu) to Seytan Ibrahim Pasha. And he was also executed in 1685, while being governor of Buda. I would note that it is incorrect she married Gürcü Mehmed Pasha, he was husband of Murad IV’s granddaughter, daughter of Safiye Sultan, Rûkiye Sultan (d. early 1697). She died in March 1696 (Sakaoglu) or 1716 (Alderson). What problem did Mehmed IV had with Rûkiye Sultan, so he executed both her husbands?
Safiye Sultan married at least two times: in 1649 she married firstly Haydarzade Mehmed Pasha. She was recorded in 1655 gifts as Safie sultana moglie di Haidar Sade, figlia di sultan Mourad, and as his widow in 1662. It was false information that he married Ibrahim’s daughter Kaya, she never existed. Anyway, her next known marriage was in probably 1663 to Sari Hasan Pasha, during which she died. But according to Ragusian envoys, he was referred in 1670 as Hussain passa. She died before 1676.
Murad IV also had a daughter named Hafsa Sultan. Only thing known about her is that she married some Hüseyin Pasha (source: İslâm ansiklopedisi: İslâm âlemi tarih, coğrafya, etnoğrafya ve biyografya lûgati – cilt 8; page 646). Actually, if you see Türkischer Biographischer Index (page 489), you will see there were eight Hüseyin Pashas who were governors during reign of Mehmed IV (different than Deli Hüseyin Pasha).
There is possibility that Murad IV had a daughter named Ayşe Sultan, but I am reasonably sceptical about it. I will explain it later, when I make a discussion of daughters of Ibrahim and Mehmed IV, which is the hardest task. I don’t know when I will make that one because my academic year starts in ten days, and I need more time to research and observe the Sultanas from the second half of the seventeenth century. Anyway…I really tried hard to find some unrecorded marriages of these analysed Sultanas, I’m glad that I have determined at least one-two marriages of Ahmed I’s daughter Fatma we didn’t know, and also with daughters of Murad IV.
This is also a topic I’m very interested in.
I’m going to sum up everything so it’s easier to read. I am very sorry but it’s long.
Gevherhan Sultan binti Ahmed I
she was Ahmed I’s eldest daughter (child?), named in honour of his great-aunt Gevherhan Sultan binti Selim II, who was still alive at the time of the princess’ birth. She firstly married Öküz Kara Mustafa Pasha in 1611-1612 (when the pasha came back from Egypt). Mustafa Pasha died in 1620. She secondly married Topal Recep Pasha during Osman II’s reign, with whom had a daughter, Safiye Hanımsultan, probably born in 1630. Gevherhan died before July 1631 (Muharram 1040), when an imperial decision calls her “deceased”. The Ragusian diplomats were wrong when they listed “Guiheri” among Ibrahim’s sisters in 1642. Gevherhan had already died by then. This is confirmed by a harem register dated February 1638-39 in which her daughter Safiye is listed but not her. (I should probably make a gifset about this but I deleted all my gifmaking stuff DDDD:)
Atike Sultan binti Ahmed I
as of now, we don’t have solid evidence on her date of birth, except for Öztuna who says she was born around 1614 (but he also says she’s Kasım’s twin…). Interestingly, Tezcan in Searching for Osman says that she was married to “the son of Ekmekçizade Ahmed Pasha (d. 1618), most probably in 1618”. Unfortunately, I don’t know who that is because I couldn’t find his name. Anyway, in the early years of Murad IV’s reign, Atike married Kenan Pasha, as Giustiniani in 1627 says that “Chinan” was married to the sultan’s sister:
Per ultimi sedevan nel Divano doi altri cognati del re, l’uno Chinan, l’altro Mustaffà, ambidoi poco prima del mio partir spediti quello in Grecia et questo in Natolia sotto titolo de inquisitori con suprema auttorità contra le violentie et tirannidi che si commettevano in quelle provintie, ma in effetto per cavar da esse grosse somme de denari per le guerre contra il Persiano.
Koca Sofu Kenan Pasha died in 1652 and in the same year, according to Uluçay, she married Doğancı Yusuf Pasha.
About her death, Uluçay says nothing. Sakaoğlu, on the other hand, says she died before 1670, that is when Doğancı Yusuf Pasha died. According to Öztuna she died in 1674. Interestingly, when talking about Atike’s tomb, Evliya Celebi mentions her as “Kenan Paşa Sultanı, Ahmed Han kızı Buy’unaz Âtike Sultan”, as if her other marriage never happened (or maybe he was away from Istanbul and didn’t know about it). If only we could date the first volume of the Seyahatnâme we could estimate Atike’s death DD:
Ayşe Sultan binti Ahmed I
I too have found some new (to me) information while I was researching Mehmed III’s daughters. Tezcan in Searching for Osman says that she was only betrothed to Karakaş Mehmed Pasha:
Ayşe Sultan, after the death of her husband in 1614, was promised to Karakaş Mehmed Pasha, probably during the reign of Osman II as well. Yet the latter was killed in battle at Khotin in 1621, and she was married to Hafiz Ahmed Pasha.
You’re right in saying that it’s Osman II who married off Ayşe to Hafiz Ahmed Pasha, because that’s what the Venetian ambassador said in April 1622:
Continua tuttavia la Maestà sua gia molti giorni nel detto serraglio, dove ha dissegnato maritar in diversi, soggetti 200 di quelle donne che vi habitano, havendo anche concluso matrimonio di due sue sorelle; una fu moglie di Nasuf, in Cafis Bassa di Van, che hora si trova in viaggio di ritorno, et fu gia capitan del Mare…
It is interesting, though, that Uluçay said that they were engaged in 1626 and married in 1627 (probably because the pasha wasn’t in Istanbul). I wonder what happened in 1627 because I doubt that it’s the date of consummation… she would have been 22. In any case the marriage was consummated because it produced two sons: Sultanzade Mustafa Bey and an unnamed one who probably died as a baby.
I don’t think she married someone else between Hezargratlı Voynuk Ahmed Pasha (m. 1645-49) and İbşir Mustafa Pasha (m. 1655).
I too thought that İbşir Mustafa Pasha was Ayşe’s last husband but Ragusian diplomats mention a “Aise Sultana moglie di Suleiman Passa” on 28 July 1662, so maybe Öztuna is right in saying that her last husband was actually Malatyalı Koca Süleyman Pasha? On the other hand, Alderson says that the princess married to Koca Süleyman Pasha (also called Ermeni) was Murad IV’s daughter but, annoyingly, doesn’t give any sources.
According to Kütükoğlu, who wrote Malatyalı Koca Süleyman Pasha’s entry in the Islamic Encyclopedia, the Ayşe Sultan he married was Ibrahim’s daughter, adding that Alderson was mistaken in identifying her as a daughter of Murad IV. The only problem is he says that the princess was later married to İbşir Mustafa Pasha… which is impossible.
So, basically, everyone is confused.
Ümmügülsüm Sultan binti Ahmed I
I think it’s impossible to say when she was born. I don’t know who Kamil von Behr is and google didn’t give me any answers…
Anyway, I really don’t know who this Halil Pasha could be because he doesn’t have a nickname so he could be anyone. The one you found in Sicill-i Osmani is a contemporary of Murad IV and therefore of Ahmed I’s daughters so it could be him.
Fatma Sultan binti Ahmed I
So, I don’t know whether to trust everything Evliya Celebi said because he was known to exaggerate things.
Anyways, Çiçek says that in late March 1622 a sister younger than Ayşe married the governor of Damascus, Murtaza Pasha. Murtaza Pasha was governor of Damascus until 1623 (did he die? Who knows). However, in this register, Fatma is unmarried:
A privy purse register from 1622 gives the names of five unmarried princesses, who may be daughters of Ahmed, Osman II, and even Mehmed III: Ümm-i Külsum, Hanzade, Halime, Fatma, and Akile. (Tezcan, B. - Searching for Osman, p. 334, n. 58)
Of course it could have been written before March 1622 but Ayşe (who married Hafiz Ahmed Pasha at the same time) is not among these princesses. It’s interesting, though, that Atike too is absent.
P.S. Who was daughter of Kosem Sultan referred in letter she prepared for pasha in 1626 after she sent her daughter Fatma? She was never named. Historians made wrong assumption that it was Ayşe Sultan, because Hafiz Ahmed Pasha was Grand Vizier at the time, and they lacked information when did she married him, and with their free will chose is was Ayşe. I would made an assumption that she was most probably Ümmügülsüm. But still, we don’t know who this Pasha was…
Well, I mean, Peirce has identified the pasha. As Uluçay believes that Hafiz Ahmed Pasha and Ayşe were married in 1626, this letter makes sense.
In 1626 or thereabout she wrote to the grand vezir Hafiz Ahmed Pasha proposing marriage to one of her daughters: “Whenever you’re ready, let me know and I’ll act accordingly. We’ll take care of you right away. I have a princess ready. I’ll do just as I did when I sent out my Fatma.” Hafiz Ahmed became the third husband of Ayşe. (Peirce, Leslie P. - The Imperial Harem, p. 148)
I don’t particularly like the assumption that Peirce (or other historians) “with their free will chose Ayşe”. If the letter is dated 1626 ca and the grand vizier at the time was Hafiz Ahmed Pasha, then it’s only logical that Peirce (or others) say: she’s talking about Ayşe. I don’t see anything wrong with that tbh.
If Kösem is not talking about Hafiz Ahmed Pasha’s marriage, though, then the princess could be any unmarried princess in the harem at the time. As Valide Sultan and Regent she arranged all the marriages, not only her daughters’.
Şehid Ali Pasha… Alderson didn’t give any sources for that claim, and the only Şehid Ali Pasha I’ve found is Fatma binti Ahmed III’s husband (so he died in 1716).
Let’s move on to Dimitrie Kantemir’s book:
So, Kantemir wasn’t a contemporary. He lived in Istanbul in 1688-91 and again in 1693-1710. His work, Historia incrementorum atque decrementorum Aulae Othomanicae (History of the Rise and Fall of the Ottoman Empire), was written in Istanbul before 1710 and completed in Russia in 1717. This is what he says about a sister of Murad IV’s:
Murad IV’s Sister had four Husbands in one year, and not one of the Marriages appears to have been consummated. For as soon as the Nuptials were celebrated according to custom, they were accus’d of some crime, and put to death by the Emperor, and their Riches with all their effects assign’d indeed to the Sultana as his lawful Wife, but in reality brought into the royal Treasury (p. 179)
This quote is a little vague. It doesn’t say who this princess is and, most importantly, when this happened. We assume it happened during Murad IV’s reign but we don’t know that with certainty. Also, Fatma's marriage to Çatalcalı Hasan Pasha lasted at least four years, as Murad IV divorced them in 1628.
About Kaçanikli Mehmed Pasha, I have found in Kaçanikli Mehmed Paşa Vakfiyesi ve Kütüphanesi that he may have died before 1631:
Although it was reported that he died in 1631, according to the Divan-ı Hümayun records, he died before 1616 (Kul, 2013: 2001). (p. 1847)
Unfortunately I couldn’t get access to E. Kul’s PhD thesis “XVII. yüzyılda Üsküb şehri”, which is the source.
Anyway, let’s move on.
Tezcan in Searching for Osman says this:
During the reign of Murad IV, a daughter of Ahmed was married to Berber Mustafa Pasha; upon the execution of her husband, she married Sarrac Hasan Pasha. After the death of her second husband, she married Janpoladzade Mustafa Pasha, who was executed by the orders of Murad IV in 1045/1635-6. This princess seems to be Fatma Sultan, who, probably after some other marriages, married Melek Ahmed Pasha in 1662. Melek Ahmed Pasha, who died in the same year, was not her last husband. (p. 334, n. 58)
I’m almost sure that Sarraç Hasan Pasha and Çatalcalı Hasan Pasha are the same man:
When he entered the palace, Çatalcalı Hasan Pasha was a “saddle (saraç) apprentice”
Tezcan says that Sarraç Hasan Pasha was a protegé of Hacı Mustafa Ağa (”Mustafa Agha sponsored the careers of such men as the future grand vizier Tabamyassi Mehmed Pasha, the vizier and finance minister Hasan Pasha, and two other viziers Sarrac Hasan Pasha and Hamidi Mustafa Pasha). Well, Çatalcalı Hasan Pasha was a protegé of Hacı Mustafa Ağa too.
I know Tezcan’s thesis is about Osman II but Çatalcalı Hasan Pasha is never mentioned, not even as Kapıcıbaşı.
Also, it’s not true that Çatalcalı Hasan Pasha became Grand Admiral after his divorce with Fatma because Giustinian in 1627 calls him “Capitan del mare”, which is the Italian translation of Kapudan-ı Derya.
For some reason, though, Civelek and Çakır’s essay İhtiras ve Servetin Gölgesinde Bir Sultan: Fatma Sultan calls him Sarrac Mustafa Pasha. I couldn’t find anything about him.
Çatalcalı Hasan Pasha died on his way to Buda, on 1 August 1631 (some say poisoned by Topal Recep Pasha, as you said). I think he’s the pasha “morto a Scopie questa estate”
(I know Skopje is not in Greece but bear with me)
I don’t think the Ragusian diplomat is saying that that princess is the widow of the governor of Skopje, but that her husband simply died in Skopje that year (I first thought it had happened during a battle or a rebellion). It is certainly interesting that Çatalcalı Hasan Pasha died on 1 August 1631 on his way to Buda, between Yenişehir and Tırhala (Greece).
I know he and Fatma were already divorced but I think that’s only the way the Ragusian diplomat chose to refer to her (as princesses were most often referred to as wives of some pasha). Maybe with more sentences from that dispatch it becomes clearer.
Thanks to İhtiras ve Servetin Gölgesinde Bir Sultan: Fatma Sultan we found out that Fatma had a son with Koca Yusuf Pasha who was alive at least until 1671 when he was noted as one of her heirs, so that’s definitely new information.
As for new marriages, I wouldn’t change anything at the moment. I personally don’t think she kept remarrying so fast.
Let’s move on to Murad IV’s daughters.
Kaya Ismihan Sultan binti Murad IV
Alderson doesn’t give any source for this supposed marriage between an unnamed princess and Tüccarzade Mustafa Pasha (which, interestingly, he says happened in 1640). On the other hand, it’s documented that Kösem and the Grand Vizier blocked the marriage between Kaya and said Tüccarzade Mustafa Pasha (who was Silahdar Mustafa Pasha, yes):
The Queen mother and the Vizier who foresaw their inevitable ruin if they did not undermine this union by its principal foundation, asked Mustafa for fifteen hundred thousand crowns; Mustafa delivered this sum in less than fifteen days, but as he saw that his enemies, having found it so easy to pay it, still wanted to make him ask for new loans, he had them tell him that he knew well that their hatred desired his blood rather than his money, that he was ready to satisfy them, and that if conscience had not arrested his despair, he had already performed the office of the executioner that he expected at any time from them. Notwithstanding this abandonment, they did not have the boldness to undertake anything openly against his life, fearing to irritate the Princess his Lover and to raise the militia; But to make believe that they wished rather to change his condition into one amenable to his grief, than to ruin him, they asked him to resign his office of Capudan Pasha in favour of a Page of the Serrail named Yusuph, and gave him the Government of Buda, where he could more solitarily than at Court, vacillate to the resentment of his affliction. Mustafa to whom all things were indifferent, except tears and sighs, consented to all that was desired, and when he was countermanded on the road to Temisuar, he went thither without murmuring, although it is one of the smallest Governments of Romelia. Thus this inconsolable Pasha still drags out a languid life, in spite of his enemies who continually watch to ruin it, and in spite of the means that his grief employs to seek to die. (Les Voyage du Sieur du Loir, 124-26)
(Translation is a bit wonky I’ll admit it but I used Google Translate because old French is hard)
I do agree, though, that Kaya Ismihan was Murad IV’s eldest daughter (who survived infanthood). Foscarini in 1637 states:
In 1640, Contarini says that Kaya is twelve years old. Considering that she was the only one with a betrothed, I’d say she was the eldest.
I don’t think that Naima quote proves that Kaya, in the end, married Silahdar Mustafa Pasha. I don’t think it happened at all. Also because Melek Ahmed Pasha too was a Silahdar so I think the two things were conflated into one and the author got confused. On the other hand, I think Evliya Celebi would have mentioned if Kaya had had a marriage before the one with Melek Ahmed Pasha.
I think it was Kaya’s betrothal with Tüccarzade Silahdar Mustafa Pasha which Alderson confused with a marriage.
Funnily, Öztuna says that Kaya had been betrothed as a baby to Abaza Mehmed Pasha (from the family of Melek Ahmed Pasha) but the pasha had been executed. She had then been betrothed to Hayder Ağazade Mehmed Pasha in 1643 but this betrothal too didn’t lead to marriage (He later married her sister Safiye). I don’t know how much of this is true.
About Hanzade binti Murad IV and Gevherhan binti Murad IV, @rhaenahanzades and I had reached the conclusion that Hanzade was Hanzade binti Ahmed I and Gevherhan was Gevherhan binti Ibrahim.
I personally think that Murad IV’s daughters who reached adulthood were Kaya Ismihan, Rukiye and Safiye.
Rukiye Sultan binti Murad IV
I agree that Abide binti Ahmed I didn’t exist, it seems to have been an oversight by some historians because some of Murad III’s daughters were very young (even infants) when he died, so it makes sense that they had long lives.
According to Ragusian diplomats, Rukiye had the following husbands:
Küçük Musa Pasha
Zelak Mustafa Pasha
Şeytân Divrikli Ibrahim Pasha, with whom she had two daughters
I’m going to be honest, I couldn’t find this Dellak Mustafa Pasha anywhere. I did look up what Dellak means and it seems quite the strange nickname to give a pasha because it means devil.
Anyway, I don’t think Mehmed IV had a specific problem with Rukiye but Ibrahim Pasha was executed in Belgrade in 1685 (according to Öztuna) so he was probably part of those executions Mehmed IV had ordered because of the failed Vienna siege. I know Wikipedia is not the best source but “Ibrahim of Buda” is listed among the Ottoman commanders under Grand Vizier Merzifonlu Mustafa Pasha.
Safiye Sultan binti Murad IV
Mmh, I think Safiye and Hafsa are the same person (Ragusian diplomats call her “Saffie” which could sound like Hafsa if you pronounce it Sàffie instead of Saffìe). While it’s true that Uluçay says she married Sari Hasan Pasha (possibly after Haydarağazade Mehmed Pasha), Öztuna says she married Abaza Hüseyin Pasha, and this seems to be confirmed by Ragusian diplomats who, in 1670, said she was married to Hussain Pascia
There is a Hafsa Sultan among Murad IV’s children in Devletler ve Hanedanlar but she seems to have died in infanthood.

Annabelle Pham was born in San Jose, California and raised in an Asian immigrant household in South San Francisco. Growing up working class, her parents encouraged her to pursue her education while also helping raise her sickly younger brother, RJ. Playing softball and being a bit of a rebel, despite her shortcomings, Annabelle had the opportunity to attend an Ivy league college on a partial scholarship, which she rejected after her father's restaurant was vandalized and robbed.
Rather than use the money for school, she pushed her family to use it to repair their restaurant. Annabelle would choose to attend a 2 year college in a CTE program since it was more affordable, working part time in her family's restaurant while she searched for new employment.
While job searching, she became curious about the recruiters office in her neighborhood, and next thing she knew, she was in the army (much to her mother and father's disappointment.)
At some point, then Private Annabelle "Kit" Pham would meet CIA Station Chief Kate Laswell while fighting alongside SAC/SOG officer Alex Keller. Impressed by the young woman's resolve and improvisation, Laswell would choose Anna as one of the three women she'd first suggest to join Taskforce 141 to John Price.
While hiding from enemy forces who'd kidnapped her in a foreign city, Annabelle's quick thinking kept her alive while her teammates were delayed on their rescue.
Anna got her callsign "Gremlin" from her unpredictable and unhinged behavior thanks to her fellow Sergeant Kyle "Gaz" Garrick. Hiding in walls, crawling in vents and ambushing enemies easily thanks to her small stature and the old fashioned element of surprise.
Smart, resourceful and good with her hands, she's a loyal friend and a cautious person whose instincts are good if they aren't clouded by her own feelings. Anna is a hopeless romantic who wears her heart on her sleeve, which can be a good and a bad thing...Especially when a certain Commander seeks to exploit it.

Gauntle 3 << Sound off! Who’s still alive?! >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Gauntle 7, regrouping. >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << Gauntle 4, wounded but still kicking! >>
Gauntle 3 << How wounded? >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << I, uhhhh, have lost engine 2. 3 is leaking oil – maybe misfire. I’ll reboot just to be sure. >>
Gauntle 7 - Wrench << Anyone else? >>
Gauntle 3 << I think it’s just us three, Gauntle 7. >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << Engine 3 back online! >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << What happened to Jaune Squadron? >>
Gauntle 3 << I think they got too close. >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Any survivors? >>
Gauntle 3 << Nothing on my radar. >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << ... >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << I’m sorry Wrench. >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Gauntle 3, think we can get back into action? >>
Gauntle 3 << Our squadron has lost 70% of our fighting capabilities, possibly more given that misfire on Gauntle 4. I think it’d be better to disengage. >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << How’s it looking on the rest of the battlefield? >>
Gauntle 3 << Pretty fucking bad, Gauntle 7. >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << Figures. >>
I got you now.
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << What do you mean “you got me now?” >>
Gauntle 3 << Huh? >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Thought one of you two talked to me on private comms. >>
Gauntle 3 << Nope. No privacy enabled. Just the usual radio chatter. >>
Your name is Jean-Michel du Rembrandt, isn’t it? I will need your help.
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Who are you? >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << Wrench, you alright man? >>
Born in Scythia, raised on southern Gaulloiserie… Holy Maker, your world is beautiful! I’ve never seen so much greenery before! I’ve had seen your banners, and your masks, and always thought Scythia was a land of volcanoes and ash. So the Maker wasn’t putting up illusions after all…
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Tinker, perform an analysis on my comms; I might be compromised. >>
Gauntle 4 – Tinker << Wilco, gimme a sec! >> << ... >> << All systems nominal, Wrench! >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Ugh. Think it might be that Starchild messing with us? >>
Gauntle 3 << I feel fine on my end. You want to disengage and return to Prolithe, Gauntle 7? >>
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << I-
I’m fine. Just radio chatter messing up my rhythm. I’ll deal with it.
Gauntle 3 << Aaaaaaalright. Look alive, Jean-Michel. >>
I will need your help, Jean-Michel. It is a big request, however,
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << W-will do, Gauntle 3. >>
Do not be alarmed. We will speak in private – and face to face – from now on.
Jean-Michel << Who the hel- >> << W-where am I? >>
This is a safebox we’re in. Time is immobile. Space is immaterial. It is only you and me in here. Nothing can reach us, nothing can harm us, and we got time to discuss the battle lying ahead. The battle against the Maker. He is wounded now; I incapacitated Him, but I don’t know for how long. So, I am looking to find a way to kill Him.
But I first want to apologize for your friends. Believe me, I did not want things to go this way. But things are very fucked up, as you can tell.
Jean-Michel << I am guessing the correct question to ask is not “who” but “what” are you – am I guessing correctly? >>
You are being pretentious. I am no god. My name is Mallik. I am a ratlung from Tabora, the planet below whose god now awakened, and whose god you’ve come to take over.
Jean-Michel << So this starchild is... your god? >>
Used to be. My mother used to believe in Him. My grandmother too.
He killed them both.
Jean-Michel << I am sorry for your loss, ma’am. I am the sole survivor of my family as well now. >>
I am well aware, Jean-Michel. I am sorry I could not save your brother. Timespace is tricky; I know it’s of little consolation to you now, but god damn it I tried! Believe me.
Jean-Michel << ...It’s fine. >> << It’s clear you got a lot on your plate, and you’re only just getting used to things. Not every day your god turns out to be real and shares their powers with you personally, only to then betray you, I hazard. >> << But, still, I got to ask you: >> << Why should I trust you? What do you need a random scythian cosmonaut like me for? >> << ... >> << Your abilities far surpass mine – and I’m not even a high ranking officer or anything of sorts. I cannot command, I cannot lead. I am just your typical spaceboy, like you said earlier. It baffles me, if I may be frank with you, ma’am. >>
When I was a kid, I dreamed to fly. I tried to join the academies in the Strip. And each and every time, I would surely be rejected. Heh. Funny thing that.
Jean-Michel << Heh. Didn’t think you had aspirations to be a spaceboy too. >> << Or spacegirl more like. >>
What can I say? Flying is cool. Space is cooler. Your lot may be jerks, but you got skills; the likes of which would make any girl red with envy.
Jean-Michel << Well, I don’t know if I’d call us all jerks, but- >>
Oh, believe me, once you’ve passed by the academy enough times and had so many spaceboys leer at you and whistle, or seen the pros on their off days get so rowdy in front of a ratlung outside the bars and in cruise trips, it is hard to shake off that kind of notoriety away.
Jean-Michel << ... >> << That is horrible. On behalf of the cosmonaut corps, I am deeply sorry for my colleagues. >>
Don’t be. Like I said – flying is cool, and space is cooler. You got the skills, and that is why I need you, Jean-Michel: You fly well. Exceptionally well, may I add. I’ve been pouring over this battle for the past couple hours – how many it’s been, I am uncertain – but, you are the one most capable of pulling it off.
Jean-Michel << Wait, hours? It can’t have been that long, has it? I need to- >>
Spacetime, Jean-Michel. It works differently. The battle lasts exactly twenty-four minutes and thirty-seven seconds in real time. From the time the first bullet rings out to the time the last vessel is struck down.
And it always ends with a graveyard that surrounds a planet cracked in half; another of His “miracles” that He escapes with a black hole He creates.
And I am not letting that happen.
I will need your help in this doomed battle, because the outcome will decide how many will live. On my planet, in your fleet, across the Kingdom whole. Your King, however, will not live to see any of these outcomes. You have a chance to save the Kingdom, Jean-Michel.
But for that, you will need to sacrifice yourself.
Are you willing to die for your King, cosmonaut?
Jean-Michel << Yes ma’am. >>
Okay, don’t “Yes ma’am” me, spaceboy; this is actual life-and-death we are talking about! No intrigues, no fancy fights. No fancy funerals or honours. Drop your soldiering and ask yourself – do I want to die for a man I’ve never met, a man who’ll never remember my name?
Are you truly willing to die for your King, cosmonaut?
Jean-Michel << ... >> << ...Yes. >> << I am a royal cosmonaut from the Scythian Republics, in willing service of King Arcuturus and the Kingdom of Solaria. But above all, I serve Scythia, and her prosperity relies on the prosperity of the Kingdom itself. You said the King will die, but his Kingdom will carry on, correct? Then I am willing to die in his name. >> << Is that a good enough answer for you, Mallik? >>
Very. You are brave, Jean-Michel. I am sorry you have to die.
Jean-Michel << It’s not death, ma’am. We can mourn the dead later, whilst us wounded still fight. >>
You may not see it, but I am smiling at you right now. I hope I can find a way to save you.
Now, here’s my plan, Jean-Michel. Follow it, and we might have a chance. All I ask is that you place your trust in me.
Please.

Gauntle 7 – Wrench << You wouldn’t be far off the mark I’d hazard. >> << Either way, I’ve noticed the hull has holes. The starchild cannot patch itself up fully – it is taking too much damage. >>

I am sorry for the pain. How are you holding up?
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << My ship is sliced in half, and I have a rod that has pierced my guts. I... I should be dead. Why am I not- >>
I’m trying to keep you alive. And I am doing the same with your ship. Sadly, He woke up sooner than we expected. And we got no time to lose now.
Genuinely, I am sorry. I am sorry for making you suffer. I am no better than Him…
Gauntle 7 – Wrench << Don’t w-worry about it, ma’am. I appreciate the concerns. But we still got a fight to finish. >> << All engines are busted – yet they work at full capacity. You are carrying me, correct? >>

<- Chapter I Chapter III ->
Chapter II – How I met my Mortal Enemy
V stirred from her slumber, groggily blinking away the remnants of sleep when morning light filtered through the blinds. Stretching her limbs, she grimaced at her back pain and let out a loud yawn, feeling the weight of yesterday’s exhaustion still clinging to her bones. There was definitely too much emotions in too little time.
The apartment was quiet, which meant that Misty had to be out for the day already – if she sniffed hard enough, she could feel the smell of incense sticks that her roommate was lighting up every day. The only thing she could hear were the distant sounds of the street coming through the windows of their shared Heywood apartment. Other than that, the morning was calm and quiet.
And that’s when Nibbles greeted her with soft, gentle “meeEEeeEooOOOOOW!”
“Jesus Christ, I’m up, I’m UP Nibbles,” V groaned, but reached out to stroke the little bald head. “Give me five minutes.” Cat responded with a contented purr, before darting off to investigate a sunbeam streaming in through the window. With the cat out of her hair, she flopped back onto the bed, burying her face back in her pillow. She immediately started to drift back into a blissful state of half-consciousness.
And that’s when her phone rang.
“Oh, fuck me…” she groaned again before picking up. “Hello?”
“Yo, V. If you ain’t busy I got a gig for you.”
“It’s really fucking early, Cap.”
“It’s well after nine,” Muamar laughed. “But the gig is good and I promise you’ll like it.”
She opened one eye. If El Capitan says she’ll like the gig, that could only mean one thing.
“Is it klep work?”
“It’s work on creative license. But yes.”
“Aight,” she finally sat on the bed, blanket still wrapped around her. “You have my attention.”
“A beautiful Colby Butte. Already have a client for it. He’s a bit... Demanding. And snippy to be honest. But what is that to you, two minutes of work and we’re set. Just try not to scratch it while racing, which I know you’ll do.”
V sighed and rubbed sleep from eyes.
“Sure, Cap. Send me the coords and I’m on it.”
“Fabulous. Info on your way. Mwah.”
After that he hung up, and V got out of the bed. She shuffled to the kitchen. Nibbles, suddenly not interested in sunbathing anymore, hot on her heels, purring loudly. Even though she knew that Misty fed the little shit already, she pretended to forget about that once in a while to make her cat happy. V and Nibbles shared similar values when it came to food after all – it was never too much and it was never too often, so who she was to deny this furless little creature a treat.
When Nibbles was focused on the breakfast, she pulled the cupboard door open, and then frowned at the sight of the empty coffee canister. “Damn,” she muttered under her breath, realizing she had forgotten to restock. Again. But who was she kidding, even if she remembered, she would most probably still wouldn’t buy it since the prices were shooting up like crazy. Sighing in resignation, V reached for the next best thing – instant coffee. It wasn't ideal, but it would have to do for now.
As she boiled water on the stove, V pulled out her phone, shooting off a quick text to Jackie.
[V] have a gig from Capitan wanna meet after? sent – 9:43 am
It didn’t even took him ten seconds to respond.
[Jackie] sure thing chica, come to the studio received – 9:43 am
[V] preem, will be there in 2 hrs tops sent – 9:44 am
She quicky prepared her coffee and left it on the counter to cool down. Since she was starting a day with a gig, she opted for a quick shower to soothe her muscles a bit. After fishing out some fresh clothes out of her wardrobe, she tossed them onto her bed and made her way to the bathroom. She turned on the water and waited for it to warm up. Leaning against the sink, she ran a hand through her short, tangled hair, grimacing at the sight of split ends and unruly knots. She really should stop bleaching them so much. With silently vowing to ask Mamá Welles to trim her hair, she shed her pj’s and stepped into the shower, sighing when hot water cascaded over her back.
The tranquility however was short-lived as a sharp pang shot through her lower back again, and she couldn't help but wince. She gritted her teeth against the pain, silently cursing her body for betraying her yet once more. Grimacing, she reached for the nearby shelf where she kept a bottle of painkillers, quickly popping on in her mouth and washing it down with a handful of water. V sighed again, forcing herself to push through and hurriedly scrubbing herself clean despite the pain.
By the time V turned off the water and stepped out of the shower, she felt the tension slowly ebb away. She quickly dried herself off and, with her hair still damp and clinging slightly to her forehead, she padded back into her bedroom to get dressed. After pulling on a pair of old ripped jeans, loose tee and heavy boots, V did her make-up and packed – she tossed her notebook and a couple of pens in her bag, and, just in case, the painkillers and a bottle of water. She put a gun into the waistband of her jeans, slipped her leather jacket on and leaned down to give the cat a quick kiss on the head. “Be good, Nibbles.” With one last glance around her apartment, she headed to the door.
And that’s when she saw her forgotten cup of coffee on the kitchen counter, already cold.
“Crap,” she sighed, but still gulped it down on her way out.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Her klep gig work on creative license went smooth as always. And, as always, she lost the tail within seconds, hacking pursuers cars for good measure. This little Thronton could really do the trick on the road, despite not being a race car per se. But, in her mind, every car was a race car if you were a good enough driver, and she was a good fucking driver. And that was a cool fucking car.
She fixed a quick text to the fixer after exiting the garage.
[V] wheels in the cave sent – 11:03 am
[El Capitan] profesh as ever eddies sent your way received – 11:03 am
V smiled at the notification. Without giving it a second thought, she decided to hit up Muamar once more.
[V] if the client will change his mind, add this baby to my bill sent – 11:05 am
[El Capitan] got bored of the bike, eh? received – 11:06 am
[V] nah, but those wheels are preem sent – 11:06 am
[El Capitan] as everything i offer received – 11:06 am
will let you know if the client will have a change of heart if not, will keep you in mind next time maybe will add a discount for preem work received – 11:08 am
[V] sounds good, Cap sent – 11:09 am
Her smile turned into a grin. She really liked to work for Cap. Klep jobs from him were the ones she enjoyed the most. Sure, it was not the same as being paid for their little music gigs, but it put food on the table and kept the bills paid. For now, they all had to endure with their monotony day jobs. Nova was a bouncer at Lizzie’s, kicking gonks asses if they were not following the club rules. Raf in the kitchen at some slurp shop in Kabuki, constantly burning his hands in the shitty, dirty kitchen. Misty in her little esoterica shop, still fighting for peoples spirituality. Prime… Doing God knows what, God knows why. And V, with her merc gigs and occasional shifts as a waitress at the same place Raf worked at.
Their situation was less-than-ideal, but they were hopeful and knew they will crawl out of this fucking shithole one day. They will get there. They will make it big.
They had to or they would lose their fucking minds.
Meandering through the streets as if on autopilot, V’s train of thought was abruptly shattered when she collided with a tall figure coming from around the corner. Startled, she stumbled backward, barely managing to regain her balance.
“Shit, sorry,” V said, feeling a flush of embarrassment heat her cheeks. “You good?”
She looked up at him. A guy, probably around her age, with short stubble and dark mid-length hair framing his sharp features. With his hands casually tucked into the pockets of a worn leather jacket, his outfit was a striking resemblance to her own. And, she couldn’t deny, he was kinda handsome. Or at least would be if he would stop sneering at her, that is. But there was something about him that set off alarm bells in her mind.
When he met her gaze, his sneer turned into a brief shock, and then into a smirk.
“No harm done,” he said in gruff voice, his smirk widening as he took in her appearance. “But maybe next time watch where you’re goin’, princess.”
Oh, so he was also a dickhead.
“Said I was sorry, didn’t I?”
“You sure did, doll, but that doesn't change the fact that you nearly knocked me over, does it?”
She sized him up with a scoff, her eyes narrowing slightly. He was at least half-foot taller than her, lean but not lanky, with broad shoulders that stretched the fabric of his jacket. Yeah, she almost knocked him over.
“Sure I did,” V rolled her eyes, brushing past him and continuing down the street, muttering under her breath. “Asshole.”
She heard him chuckle behind her back, but if he said anything in return, she didn’t catch that. She adjusted the strap of her bag and quickened her pace, this time actually watching where she was going. As she walked, she couldn't shake the feeling that he was still watching her for some reason. She resisted the urge to turn around, her irritation growing with each step. She fished a cig from the inside pocket of her jacket and lit it, taking a deep drag to calm the fuck down.
When V finally arrived at the studio, slightly calmer, the familiar sight brought a sense of relief. Pushing open the heavy door, she stepped inside, greeted by the techie guy, Ben, letting her know that Jackie was waiting for her in the back. She thanked him with a smile and went in the direction he pointed.
Jackie’s tall frame was hunched over the mixing console as he tinkered with the dials. He looked up as she entered the backroom, a warm smile lighting up his face.
“Hola, chica. Lookin’ good.”
“And feelin’ shitty, but thanks.”
“Ay. Need a hug?”
V couldn't help but chuckle at his offer, touched by his thoughtfulness.
“Fuck yeah, I need a hug.”
Without hesitation, Jackie crossed the room and enveloped her in a warm embrace, his arms wrapping around her. V closed her eyes for a moment and sighed. “Thanks Jacks.”
“Anytime,” he ruffled her hair. When she stepped back, he frowned a little. “Issues with the gig?”
“Nah, gig went good. Actually it’s the only thing that went good today,” she nervously rubbed the back of her neck, brushing the edge of the spine cyberware with her fingertips. “It’s just, dunno, bad day, I guess. I'm sleep deprived, my back is killing me again and some asshole practically plowed into me on the street and made it look like it was my fault. And I’m hungry.”
Jackie raised an eyebrow. “Shit. That’s a one rough morning, huh?” He thought for a moment and gave her a small smile. “Y’know what? I have something to show you actually. Wanted to do it after talking the detes with Wakako, but fuck it,” he sat at the desk, clicking on the console again. “Was working on a new demo. Only have a short bit for now, but I think you're gonna dig it.”
“Aight, lay it on me,” she ginned, settling onto the edge of the desk next to him and nodding at him to play the track. She enjoyed listening to every bit of his work, no matter what stage it was at. To be fair, he did the same for her.
They listened in silence for a while, but V’s smile grew wider every second. She didn’t knew shit about making music like this, but could appreciate a good beat when she heard one. After it finished, she laughed. “Shit, this beat slaps harder than my mother.”
Jackie looked at her sternly.
“V. Ain't funny.”
“Yea it is, you just have no sense of humor.”
“Yea, and you’re deflecting trauma with dark humor.”
“Okay, ouch. Touché tho. But really, it’s pretty fucking good.”
“Glad you like it,” his eyes lit up with excitement. “Because I will need a short chorus for it and I want you to sing the part. We would record it for my first album.”
She froze.
“Wai- What?” her eyebrows shot up in surprise. “Are you serious?”
“Sure am, V. Was thinking of a collab like that for some time and I want you for the first one I do this with.”
V felt a lump form in her throat as Jackie's words sank in. Maybe this day wasn’t so bad after all. She sniffed, blinking back tears, before nodding slowly.
“That’s a yes?” he grinned.
“Well, how the fuck can I say no?” he laughed while she wiped her eyes and leaned in to hug him again, which he returned right away.
“Good,” he pat her back lightly. “Now c’mon, let’s get some fucking food. I’m starving too.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When hours later V made her way to their hideout – a rented garage near Coyote – sun was already dipping low on the horizon. They had a quick jam session planned and V wanted to finally blow off some steam. Even though the meetup with Jackie made her day ten times better, she still felt antsy for some reason.
She walked to the back entrance and smiled at Prime, who was sitting on the curb next to the back door, smoking a joint.
“Fancy seeing you here,” V stood next to her, snuffing her cig and taking a puff from Prime’s doobie when she offered.
“You too,” the drummer nodded. From those two words alone, V could tell that she was less baked than usual. “Nova will be late, they had some situation at the bar.”
“Drunk gonks or something else?”
“Dunno, wasn’t really listening when Raf was talking,” she cleared her throat and added quietly. “But Dex is here.”
“What?” V frowned and crouched down in front of her. “Why?”
“Said he had some info about the Battle or something,” she took the joint back and took a drag. “But he didn’t say much else.”
V sighed and nodded. It wasn’t that they didn’t like to work with Dex. Well, they didn’t, but that was not the point. It was just that he always had only his own biz in mind, not caring much about them and their goals. He didn’t support them or promoted them as he should. They were only a source for a quick eddie, no matter how small the eddie was. So yeah, they did resent him a bit, but right now he was the only one they could afford and they needed a manager if they wanted to move forward at all.
“Aight,” V sighed again and stood up. “I’m goin’ in. My ass is freezing,” she opened the door and looked at her friend. “You comin’?”
“Yeah. Let’s get this over with,” Prime flicked the remainder of her joint into the alley and followed V inside. V greeted Dex with short nod and smiled at Misty and Raf, sitting on the couch next to them, dropping her bag along with the jacket and her gun.
“Does it feel for you like we’re being called into the principal's office when he shows up?” Raf asked her quietly.
“Every single fucking time,” she whispered and he chuckled.
They sat, mostly in silence, tension filling the air. He of course couldn’t just sent them the info, because why make their life easier, right? He was insufferable sometimes. Wasn’t helping them with their career but was micromanaging them at the same time, just to be sure that they knew their place and stayed in line.
Finally, after what seems like hours with Dex in their space, Nova arrived, with a pout on her face, looking as if someone pissed in her cereal.
“Hi. Sorry, shitty shift,” she said, shrugging off her jacket and throwing it on the hanger in the corner. “You’d think that if we’re fucking closed then gonks will stop try to come in, Jesus fuckin’-” she finally looked up and stopped in her tracks. “Oh. Hi Dex.”
“Hello, Miss Foster,” he lit up his cigar and V gritted her teeth. They were not supposed to smoke inside and he knew it. They will get another fucking earful from the proprietor. “Come on and sit down. I have some news about this Battle of the Bands thing for y’all,” he pulled out his phone and quickly found something he was looking for, while Nova sat on the armrest next to V, exchanging knowing glances. “Got the info from the organizer. You're officially signed up for the event as performers,” Dex stated. “There will be five bands in total, the opening is scheduled for next Saturday. They want each band to do a short presentation as an appetizer before the real competition will start.”
“Do we know the dates of each performances?” V asked.
“Not yet, they’re still working on the program. All info about the phases of the competition should be available this week. Will send them to you. Any other burnin’ questions?”
“Yeah. You had to come down here to let us know about that?” Nova raised her eyebrow.
“You know me, Miss Foster. I like to look y’all in the eyes when talkin’ biz.”
“Riiight. Thanks Dex.”
“Of course. So if that’s all-“
“Actually, wait,” V quipped in. “One more. Is there a list of who else made it in?”
He scrolled down on the info.
“Yes, there is, Miss V. Sending you the detes,” they all got a notification as Dex turned to leave. “If they will inform me of anything else, I’ll let y’all know.”
With that he took his leave and all of them sighed in union.
“We really should stop giving his detes in any papers, fuck me,” Nova said.
“That’s, like, literally his job, Nova,” Raf rolled his eyes.
“Well, I don’t like him,” she leaned to pull out a beer from the crate laying on the floor next to the couch and opened it, but when Raf reached out to her, she sighed and handed him a bottle, reaching for another one. “And I know you gonks don’t like him too. We would be better off alone, to be honest. V handles more things than him, and better,” she pointed her finger at V. “We pay him for nothing and you know it.”
“Yeah, I know,” V sighed and pulled out her phone to open the message from Dex. “But you know that we need someone. Let’s just… We’ll talk about it after the competition will be over, aight?”
Nova was quiet for a while, mulling her words. She wasn’t exactly in a mood to push V and she saw that V would also lose her shit for that today. “Yeah. Yeah, you’re right. Let’s just focus on the Battle for now.”
“Thank you,” V let out a sigh of relief and stood up, wandering in circles while scrolling the detes. “Okay, there it is. List of bands qualified for the Battle; Thunderforge. I have no idea who they are,” she glanced at her teammates, but they also shook their heads. She returned to the list. “The Shouty Hearts. I actually heard of them couple of times.”
“Yeah, they’re pretty good,” Nova nodded. “We were at their gig at Dicky Twister some time ago, remember?”
“Oh, that’s right,” she slapped her forehead.
“You went to a gay bar without me?” Raf scoffed.
“We went for a gig without you,” Nova smirked and sipped her beer. “Not the first time too. Okay, who else do we have?”
“Fivedust. Again, not sure if I know them.”
“They’re okay,” Prime stated. “Less hard, more like a funky vibe, but they’re pretty good.”
“Aight. So that leaves us and…” V scrolled further down and froze. “Samurai? Fuckin’ Samurai?” She read in disbelief.
She heard about Samurai, alright. They all did. Samurai was slowly carving out a reputation for themselves, much like them. They were a rising force in the music scene and she knew about their growing fanbase. Apparently they were able to captivate a crowd without much effort. They were a threat that couldn't be taken lightly. The realization hit V like a punch to the gut. This shit just got a whole lot more serious. If they were going to compete against Samurai, they needed to bring their A-game and be prepared for every-fucking-thing.
They couldn’t catch a fucking break, could they?
“Well that’s just fucking fantastic,” she reached out for a bottle with trembling hands.
“Samurai, whoop-de-do,” Nova rolled her eyes. “What about them, choom?”
“The fuck you mean what about them?” Raf interjected and narrowed his eyes. “They’re huge!”
“I’m kinda with Raf on that one to be honest,” V sighed and sipped her beer.
“Yea, me too,” Prime shrugged and Misty nodded.
“Fucking, thank you!” Raf yelled.
“Uh, no? They’re not huge,” Nova scoffed and looked at them with disbelief. “What the fuck you’re all talking about? They’re in the same spot as us. If it were otherwise, they wouldn’t take part in this competition.”
Well… V couldn’t argue with that. She started to nervously chew on her already destroyed nail polish, until Nova slapped her hand. She sighed. Maybe they really were exaggerating. Maybe Samurai wasn’t that good. At least not much better than them, she hoped. Maybe Nova was right. They were in the same boat, after all. But then Misty said something that sent her down the spiral again.
“Didn’t they start a fire at Rainbow Cadenza some time ago?”
Oh, and also they did that and were the talk of the week. It was a dumb marketing, but if something was stupid but worked, then it wasn’t stupid. And this stunt fucking worked. V cursed under her breath, feeling more and more pissed.
“Okay, enough,” she pointed her finger at them. “We all need to chill, aight? We're not some fucking small-time act. We've earned our place there, and I know you know it too,” she huffed, downing her beer before continuing. “I’ll admit, seeing their name on the list was like a fucking slap, but that’s our wake-up call, you know? That’s the proof that this is not a fucking playground anymore.”
They all nodded slowly, Nova with satisfied smirk on her face.
“Finally,” she raised the bottle with a mocking toast and V rolled her eyes.
“Yeah, yeah, shut up.”
Nova only laughed her loud pearly laughter and downed her beer too. Raf, Misty and Prime exchanged glanced, and, at last, Raf sighed.
“Yeah, you’re right. We ain’t gonna back down because of couple of self-centered wannabes.”
“They’re mostly not half bad from what I heard,” Nova shrugged. “It’s only Silverhand who struts like a peacock.”
“The vocalist, right?” V sipped her beer.
“Yep. That means you need to crush his ego,” Nova smirked, poking V's arm and she finally laughed. Hurray for another day of emotional rollercoaster, she guessed.
“Yeah, no prob, choom.”
“Are there any pics of them online? I want to at least see if he’s as cute as they say,” Raf exhaled dramatically.
All girls rolled their eyes at him, but Nova pulled out her phone to look for any sign of them. It didn’t take her long to find their fanpage. She muttered something about setting up one for Banzai Riot too and handed Raf her phone. He tilted his head while zooming in on the pic and shrugged.
“Meh. I’ve seen better. The one with mullet is cute tho,” he smiled and handed the phone to Misty when she reached out to check them out too. It went on a tour round the room so all of them could see their future competitors, and when it finally got into V's hands, she choked on her beer.
“That asshole!”
Her bandmates exchanged surprised glances.
“What asshole?” Misty frowned.
“The one that- Shit,” she rubbed her forehead, realizing that they haven’t heard her story from before yet. “I bumped into some guy on the street today and he was all pissy about it at first and then smirking and shit. And he acted as if I was the only one not looking where I’m fucking going. That’s him! That’s the asshole!”
“Which one?” Nova frowned and V pointed her finger at the tall, broody one. “That’s Silverhand.”
“That’s him?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Great. Fucking amazing,” she sneered and reached out for a cig. Fuck it, Dex already smoked inside, she won’t make it worse.
“Did he know who you are?”
V blinked in surprise, taken aback by Misty’s question.
“Nah… No, I don’t think so,” she frowned.
“You don’t look convinced, you know?”
“Well… When I think about it now, he was acting weird.”
“Well, maybe he did recognize you?” Nova questioned. “We played some gigs in the city too, maybe he saw one?”
V shrugged. There was some possibility of him stumbling across their concert one time. Or maybe he had found across them online. She knew that some of the audience recorded their stuff and posted it without a second thought, even if they didn’t know who was playing. Or maybe it was just a chance encounter and she was reading too much into it. V didn't know anymore. She was sure of one thing, though.
This competition is going to be one hell of a ride.

6. 0.5 NO OTOKO
¡Delicada! ¡Sutil! ¡Tierna! ! realista !
3. A Table!: Rekishi no Recipe wo Tsukutte Taberu
2. BRUSH UP LIFE

Really nice WDZ fanvids by @allerod 🌵🍊
youtube
Once again. I'm not going to write an article about my fave Captain Monastario (like this one https://elzorro.net/en/the-best-of-the-worst-the-phenomenon-of-capitan-monastario/), I'll just translate my fanfic dedication into English :)
'And I also wanted to somehow, let it be in an entertaining way, honor the memory of Britt Lomond—a talented theater and film actor, screenwriter and writer, Olympic-level swordsman, professional designer and artist, and an award-winning participant in WW II and the Korean War.'
youtube
I don't think I need to explain why, besides Monastario I'm interested in Zorro :)
But I want to emphasize that although I read romantic stories about this couple, I write about their relationship on background of real historical events (in 1820 there was a Civil War in Spanish America). Any kind of relationship. Some people don't understand me, some ppl don't see the 'chemistry' between the actors, but all the actors (and Guy Williams personally, if I'm not mistaken) said that there was magic on the set (I mean, when Britt Lomond was in the show).
I say this so that no one will say that I'm fascinated by Comandante's blue eyes xD The eyes are beautiful, of course, and I'm bisexual, but that's not the point :) Anyway, nevermind xDD
P.S. Still, good fanfiction about Enrique/someone or Diego/someone I read. But now I try not to do this, I'm writing my stories unforgivably slowly :(
