reMarkable 2 Review

I had some requests for a review of this device, and I am glad to oblige in this case. I've been closely following digital pen stylus tech for about eight years. I'm just old enough that I still need to handwrite a lot of things to tap into my creativity, but greatly dislike clutter in my life.

The reMarkable is for the person that writes enough by hand to fill several notebooks a year. For someone that wants the tactile and somatic component of writing on paper to associate with their process. The new reMarkable 2 does basically what the reMarkable 1 did; faster, better, and with a much improved piece of hardware.

If you've read my previous review from May 2018, you know I basically raved about the first generation reMarkable. I had a few criticisms of the Gen 1, and a lot of that has been addressed with the Gen 2.

Support & User Experience

I've used a reMarkable tablet continuously for almost three years. I've never had a support issue with one. The software is updated regularly, features added, and user experience improved with each iteration.

There is really no comparisons to be made with that kind of uninterrupted usage. No smartphone, tablet, or computer you ever own will be that reliable. A 3-4 year old Thinkpad, running Linux, is about as close as it gets to that level of, switch-on-and-use, every day, without fail feeling.

The reason is that the reMarkable 2 is leveraging the most reliable hardware, user input methods, stylus technology, and operating system basis available. My fear has always been that my reMarkable wouldn't be as reliable as a regular piece of paper, and a good pen. So far, that fear has never been realized with the reMarkable 1, or 2.

Pen Stylus Input

The majority of what one picks up and uses will be Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP) stylus tech, with Microsoft Surface Products, or Wacom AES (Active Electrostatic) like that found in a lot of Asus, Dell, Lenovo, and so forth. The older Wacom EMR (Electromagnetic Resonance) is used less frequently, and usually only with their own products, or a version thereof with Samsung Phones and Tablets.

Of the three options, Wacom's EMR is still the best.

That's what you'll find on the reMarkable Tablet, and if you get their Marker Plus (it's the black one) it has the magical EMR eraser tip opposite the drawing point. There is no better pen stylus experience, for general use, sketching, handwriting capture, tilt sensitivity, and so forth.

The Marker Plus is $50 more than the regular Marker. It is worth it.

What if you're like me, and you have a drawer full of pen stylus products? Products that include the legendary Excalibur stylus pen that came with the Thinkpad Tablet 10 Gen 1, and worked with the EMR capable Thinkpad Yoga S1 from 2013? The one with the eraser tip, and sweet felt tip point? Will that stylus work?

Yes. Yes, yes it will.

However, the reMarkable Marker Plus just feels better. It's heft (19g) is perfect, eraser tip rounded to feel like the real thing, and tips that degrade gracefully without marking up the screen. Buy. The. Marker. Plus.

The Hardware

The manufacturer says that the reMarkable 2 gets 3 times the battery life of the 1, is 2 times as responsive (relative to rendering digital ink), and is the world's thinnest tablet at 0.19". Mostly, this is all of this seems to be true. Also, as mentioned before all the new Marker Plus has a built in eraser, all the new accessories snap together with magnets, and it charges with USB-c.

The screen is capacitive touch capable now. No more page turning buttons, and you can swipe down from the top to back out of a document or folder. You can turn pages with the swipe of a finger now. It takes a second to get the gestures down, but they're crisp and reliable once you do.

The tablet runs off of a dual core ARM process (a good thing, in my opinion).

My only quibble is that it is supposed to be able to connect to both 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz WiFi, but so far I've only gotten it to connect to 2.4. It might be something with my specific router, and I'm not sure if my experience is typical.

On the lower left hand side of the tablet there are 5 connection points. This suggests that the tablet may have the ability to connect to other accessories in the future. If reMarkable added a Plain Text Editor, and a keyboard cover to the reMarkable, I would be over the moon.

There is no evidence that they will do this, but a guy can dream. Having what's basically an e Ink Typewriter this thin and light would be the ultimate for this writer.

The Software

It is much the same experience as the reMarkable 1 with a few new additions.

You can convert your handwritten notes into text, cursive or block letters, and share by email. There is support for 33 languages.

With a Google Chrome plug-in, you can read web articles and pages on your reMarkable. If you're already battling with eye strain from looking at glowing screens all day, this is a nice feature.

Reading large PDFs and eBooks is still not crisp and snappy, but it is a vastly improved experience when compared to the reMarkable 1. Large graphically intense documents can be navigated without it taxing your patience. What I store on my reMarkable is vastly different now because of how much improved document handling has become.

I find the small sacrifice in speed rendering pages worth it, compared to the eye strain I get reading on other screens.

More pens, features, page templates, and ease of organizing have been added incrementally over time. With regard to the core functioning (Linux Based Codex OS) of the device, the manufacturer has only ever improved and supported the reMarkable.

Aesthetics

The reMarkable 1 was good for what it could do. It wasn't a bad looking product, but compared to the reMarkable 2, it was a rough prototype. Most tablets do not feel as nice in the hand as the reMarkable 2.

Rubber no-slip nubs on the back, rounded edges, satin finished glass and aluminum, make the tablet itself feel like it's from the future. I bought the Polymer Weave Book Folio, a step up from the regular Folio. A close friend got the same device and marker options as I did, but opted for the Premium Leather Folio.

Definitely, get the Book Folio, and if you can scrabble together the extra money, get the premium leather. That's my only regret is that I didn't spring for the best accessory offered. Is the Polymer Weave good? Absolutely, worth the $99. It is rigid, will protect your investment, and it's very classy looking.

My friend who picked up the Leather Folio is a graphic designer, and has greatly informed my sense of aesthetics over the years. She says the Leather Book Folio is well worth the extra. She is, most certainly, correct.

So, yeah, if you're going to get a reMarkable 2 and want a slightly used Polymer Weave Book Folio (mine), I'll let it go for cheap (so I can atone, and get the leather version, ha ha).

Value

The reMarkable 2 doesn't have a web browser, app store, Merge Dragons, audio player, or other third party applications. It won't replace your iPad, or Android Tablet. It will replace all the paper, notebooks, and pens in your life. This is especially true if you have a small scanner (like a Doxie), and leverage reMarkable's Smartphone app and cloud sync feature.

This tablet is for people that like paper, a lot, but don't want to carry it around or keep track of it. It is for people that fill 8-12 Moleskines a year, and mark up hundreds of pages of documents, for themselves, and others. It is for people that tap into their creativity by writing things down, sketching diagrams, and making lists.

The act of holding a pen or pencil against paper is a cognitive trigger, built into their implicit memory, every day, for years, that allows them to do their things.

$399 will buy a decent Samsung or Apple branded tablet, but neither of those is designed to emulate the experience of writing on paper like the reMarkable 2 tablet is. The reMarkable 2 will run you $399, a Marker Plus $99, and a Polymer Weave Folio $99, bringing it all to almost $600.

Unless you lurk reMarkable's website, and wait for a promotion. They did run a promotion for their pre-order, and will likely do something similar within a year of release. It is my recollection that the manufacturer ran at least two promotions for the Remarkable 1, and the savings were significant.

If you don't need one right this minute, check the website every week or so, their Amazon Store edifice, and whatever other options they have for your region.

Competitors

In the last few years, reMarkable has only acquired more competition in the e ink Tablet market. That competition varies depending on where you live in the world. In the US, no one makes a thing that directly competes. I looked at other products, didn't see anything that made me pull out my reMarkable 1 and make a list of pros and cons for comparison.

That isn't to say there isn't a better thing for your use case, but there wasn't for mine.

Final Thoughts

If I didn't drive this point home earlier, I'm going to make it now. The reMarkable 2 will not replace your laptop, mobile OS (iOS/Android) Tablet Device (meant to replace your laptop), or Smartphone. There isn't even a calculator app on the reMarkable 2.

The Remarkable 2 will replace the pens, pencils, highlighters, notebooks, and print outs cluttering up your daily carry bag, desk, and life. It's a digital paper option, not a personal computing option. When used for that purpose, it is exceptional, and well worth the investment.

The most satisfying aspect of driving a Cruze Premier RS is diving into corners. Body roll is almost non-existent, and the big 18-in. tires grip with authority. Otherwise, you may desire to strike up a Starbucks with every trip in a Cruze. A drowsy driving screen would be perfect for this vehicle.

Yes, in Premier trim, with the RS option package, the Cruze is more agile. Is the driving experience dynamic?

Instead, the Cruze is all matured, a more sophisticated and fully grown small car, one that offers dynamic style in addition to luxury touches and contemporary conveniences as long as you're willing to spend for them. Chevrolet is also wise to provide free, long-term access to OnStar and 4G LTE Wi-Fi services, quickly one of the most compelling reasons to choose the Cruze.

Yoga Book 2, C930

Lenovo announced their new Yoga Book (2) C930 at IFA in Berlin yesterday. It's a big deal, not just because the Yoga Book got a refresh, but it brings a form factor to the market I've been waiting ten years for (Microsoft Courier). Dual-screen devices have been tried, but no one has ever done it well. Lenovo looks like they've found the secret sauce, or just waited for the tech to advance far enough along, and seized the moment.

Either way, I win! I already carry a Yoga Book 1 and an E-Ink Tablet with me most places, and the Yoga Book C930 basically combines the two into one easy to carry device.

Reached out to Lenovo for some clarity on some things and heard back. See below.

Let's look at the specs.

Processor

The Yoga Book (2) C930 comes with either an Intel Core i5-7Y54 Processor or Intel Core m3-7Y30 Processor. Both of these are going to be passively cooled, Hyper Threading, and pushing Intel HD Graphics 615, dual-channel memory (DDR3L/LPDDR3), and a fairly high Turbo clock.

If you're used to using a passively cooled device, particularly a Yoga Book 1, either of these processor options should feel like a big upgrade. If you're using anything with fans, 15 watts and up, this is going to feel as fast or slower for applications. These are the trade offs for a silent, energy efficient machine, that stays cool to the touch.

Sound

2 x Speakers with Dolby Atmos®

Lenovo has really been pouring the love into sound production across other models announced at IFA. While not a selling feature of the Yoga Book 2, I bet there's a significant improvement over the Yoga Book 1.

Memory

RAM - 4 GB LPDDR3 (Rumored 8GB option?)

ROM - 128 or 256 GB SSD

Card Slot - microSD; Supports Up to 512 GB

I'm not sure what kind of hard drive will actually land in the Yoga Book 2 (I'm going to try and find out), but it isn't EMMc type. That's good for speed, really good, but not as good for battery life or reliability where EMMc really shines.

UPDATE:

Me: Are the SSD options, SATA, M.2, or... ???

Lenovo: its M2. PCIE SSD

Is 4 GB of RAM enough? For me, even with slower, passively cooled machines, it has been. I've been able to draw fluidly in Photoshop at 300 DPI, twelve layers, with that kind of RAM and not had a problem. Typically, that would be all I would have open, other than some reference images.

The press release says 4 GB, but I’ve heard reporters say 4 or 8 GB reporting from IFA. I’ll try to verify.

UPDATE:

Me: Will there be a 4GB RAM and an 8GB RAM option be offered?

Lenovo: There is only a 4GB RAM variant announced. It's technically ready to support 8GB but we are not planning to ship it now, unless there are some specific demand which would likely be only in B2B.

For my varied use case, with devices like this, the EMMc hard drive has been the bottleneck, not the RAM.

Hopefully, the microSD card slot works reliably, unlike the Yoga Book 1 where it was hit or miss.

Battery

Standby Time - Over 16 Days

General Usage - About 8.6 Hours

8.6 hours for that capacity mAh battery feels like optimism. Could be real. I'll believe it when I see it.

Even if I only got seven hours out of it, I wouldn't be sad, and I carry a spare battery with me most of the time anyway to charge my phone and tablet. The Yoga Book 2 has two USB 3.1 (Gen 1) Type-C ports, one for charging.

I love QHD displays. Love. I understand that this is Wacom Tech, and probably not proprietary to Lenovo. I'll try to verify, but I think any AES pen stylus should work. This was a major gripe with the Yoga Book 1, that both surfaces didn't take pen input. It didn't bother me because I preferred to draw offset on the Create Pad surface, but for some, it was a hard transition.

E Ink

Size - 10.8" FHD (1920 x 1080), 204 ppi

Type - Flexible E Ink Mobius Display

Touch - Capacitive Multitouch and Precision Pen Support (4,096 pressure levels)

This panel provides the keyboard (with support for thirty languages), with haptic/audio feedback, and keen key press animations. Switch modes, and it is a digital notebook, for sketching and taking notes. At 10.8″ it should be a little bigger and better to use than the Yoga Book 1. Also, Infrared Fingerprint reader built in. Whether this will make Windows Hello viable or not, remains to be seen. I keep hoping Lenovo will go back to having their own biometric access for their machines, as Microsoft can’t make a ham sandwich correctly right now.

Edit: The Infrared Fingerprint reader, sitting flush with the surface of the keyboard, looks to be the power button. Nice!

Last year, Onyx teased an E Ink typewriter (laptop) with a 10.3 Flexible E Ink display. It ended up being canceled, and attempts by other companies to bring such a device to the US have fizzled. I kickstarted the Pomera foldable E Ink writer, but it didn't go. I've been watching to see if something with that display would land in the US. Looks like it will.

The Yoga Book appears to have that tech built in. Excite! I thought that maybe the "Flexible" nature of the display was a literal description, and it appears to be. The Yoga Book 3 teased at Computex appears to maybe have a flexible display, maybe? Squint, and look at that hinge!

The bad news; it only supports PDF format right now. Lenovo has told reporters that they will add ePub (non-DRM), Mobi, and Text formats, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Lenovo, or any OEM, adding functionality to a consumer product after release is very unlikely. I'm sure Lenovo has the best intentions here, but if having those formats recognized on the E Ink side is mission critical, this might not be the device for you.

UPDATE:

Me: When will Lenovo add ePub, Mobi, and txt format options to the E ink display reader application?

Lenovo: In Q1 calendar, 2019.

There's also handwriting to text conversion right now. It sounds like Lenovo might add the same for mathematical calculations, diagrams, and such, but if it ships lacking that functionality, I wouldn’t count on seeing it added later. It is what it is.

Me: Will it ship with the ability to convert mathematical calculations and diagrams the same as handwritten text?

Lenovo: Yes

Other Stuff

You can knock on the lid twice to reverse the polarity of the magnets holding it closed. It makes the device feel very premium, and it is great for nail biters, and people that like knock-knock jokes.

The Precision Pen that comes in the box looks nice, but appears to lack barrel buttons. Like the Yoga Book 1, designers and artists will be looking for alternatives, and like before, there will probably be many options. I'll try to verify that. Hopefully, with the Yoga Book 3, Lenovo gives us a stylus pen we don't immediately replace with something else.

UPDATE

Me: Does the Precision Pen have barrel buttons? Will other AES Lenovo and Wacom stylus pens rated for 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity work with the Yoga Book 2?

Lenovo: It has barrel 2 buttons and one eraser button at the top. Only Bluetooth AES 2.0, yes, but shortcuts of physical buttons may not work as intended as our built-in software pairs and configures in the background for this Pen specifically;

Edit: I found a video where one of the reviewers demonstrates the use of the barrel buttons (2). There’s a flat toggle piece on one side of the stylus pen. One for erasing, and one for making selections. Yay!

Edit: There are conflicting reports about release, September, or October.

The good EVs are finally here, and that’s something worth getting excited about. All those electrified models that manufacturers have been teasing us with for years are hitting dealer lots. Now, anyone wanting to finally ditch internal combustion has a series of real, and really compelling, choices.

Volkswagen was among the leading-edge EV providers here in the US, releasing the excellent, if expensive and short-ranged, E-Golf back in 2012. The new ID 4 is that car’s successor, riding on the new MQB platform and designed from the ground up to be all-electric. Where the E-Golf was fundamentally compromised by its internally combusted heritage, the ID 4 shows just how good a pure EV can be.

Excellent, smooth drive

That dedicated platform means Volkswagen engineers can stuff 82 kilowatt-hours’ worth of battery into the ID 4, though interestingly only 77 kWh of those are actually usable. This extra headroom means the car can intelligently manage charge cycles across a broader number of cells, which should lead to greater life and more predictable range. Regardless, you’re covered by an eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty on the pack itself.

Those cells power either one or two electric motors. Initial versions of the car, like the First Edition model pictured here, make do with 201 horsepower through the rear wheels. In the future, an all-wheel-drive model will bump that up to 302 hp. Torque on the RWD flavor is 228 pound-feet. That’s plenty healthy and, given it’s an EV, readily available. On the deceleration side, while there are two regen modes to select from here, neither is close to what I’d consider a one-pedal mode. That’s a disappointment for sure.

As to the all-important range, VW’s EPA figure is 250 miles. In my testing, which included a mix of city, rural and highway driving at temperatures generally in the 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit range, I netted… 250 miles. Yes, 250 exactly.

I feel compelled to point out that this was with me treating the ID 4 like a normal car. I toggled the heat and the air-con when I wanted, and made liberal use of both heated seats and steering wheel, even the massage feature. While I did generally leave the car in Eco mode, I wasn’t gentle with the throttle, and yet I easily met the EPA rating. Drive a little more frugally and I’m sure you can beat it.

That said, there’s little reason to drive aggressively. While the ID 4 does have that fun EV throttle response, zipping you off the line and through traffic gaps, this is not a quick car. That fact is particularly evident at highway speeds, where the ID 4 cruises without issue but doesn’t exactly leap forward when prodded.

It does look a little frumpy.

No worries. To get the most out of the ID 4 I recommend you take a deep breath, settle back in your seat, set the adaptive cruise to a reasonable speed and just relax. The car is even smart enough to vary the follow distance depending on your chosen driving mode, staying a little farther back in Eco mode to ensure it won’t need to speed up and slow down so frequently.

The handling is similarly relaxed, but the ride quality is good. Impressive, that, considering the 20-inch wheels and tires outfitted on this First Edition. And, while you’d of course expect an EV to be quiet, VW engineers clearly spent a lot of time isolating any hint of road and wind noise. The driver’s seat is a serene place.

That’s helped by the stark white interior highlights on this First Edition version. While the materials themselves are a little harsh in places, the overall look has a distinctively concept-car vibe, which I appreciate greatly. I also love the shifter, mounted high on the gauge cluster like the one in the BMW i3. Just tilt it in the direction you want to go — or click the P button when you’re done with the going.

That gauge cluster is petite, but is at least present, and plenty big enough to give you all the relevant information about speed, range and navigation prompts. The gauge cluster will even display navigation prompts from Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. That’s key because I have a feeling you won’t want to rely much on the baked-in nav.

The infotainment experience in the ID 4 is clean and simple, showing some serious iOS influence with a home button on the left that you’ll need to hit to jump between various sections. It makes for an easy way to get from, say, media to navigation, but it does mean reaching for that home button a lot.

And waiting a lot, too. When I got my first drive of the ID 4 last year I was disappointed at how sluggish the software was. The optimist in me hoped that things would be optimized before the car shipped. The realist in me now sees no such optimizations have been made. Sliding and swiping is often met with extended, painful delays. If that weren’t enough, the voice recognition system is rudimentary at best. Like I said, stick to Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, both of which are supported, wirelessly at that.

It should come as no surprise that most of the car’s controls rely on capacitive touch. Even the slider for the sun shade to cover the big, bright panoramic roof is touch-sensitive. Side window controls are still physical, thank goodness, but there’s an element of touch here, too. Instead of the driver having four switches, one per window, there are only two. To control the rear windows you have to touch a tiny little “rear” indicator. Good luck doing that without taking your eyes off the road.

That panoramic roof provides good headroom, front and rear. Those in the back will find their seats slightly elevated, giving a clear, commanding view of the world around. A pair of USB-C connectors back there will keep the kids from complaining about their own batteries, while there’s a wireless charging cubby with more USB ports for phones up front.

Everybody is protected by a comprehensive active safety suite, featuring niceties like automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear-traffic alert and even road sign detection. All that’s included on even the base ID 4.

To control the rear windows you have to touch a tiny little “rear” indicator. Good luck doing that without taking your eyes off the road.

That base edition, called Pro, starts at $41,190 including a $1,195 destination charge. The First Edition you see here is no longer available, meaning your only options are the Pro or the $45,690 Pro S, which adds many of the features you see here, including the panoramic roof, massaging power seats and an upgrade to a 12-inch navigation screen. Another $1,500 brings you up to the Gradient trim, layering on those 20-inch wheels and some other visual flair. The eventual AWD upgrade will be a further $3,680 and, other than floor mats and the usual spate of accessories, there really aren’t any extra boxes to tick.

How does that compare with other EVs on the market today? The closest Tesla is the Model Y, which starts at $52,190 including a $1,200 destination fee. For that you get more range, 326 miles per the EPA, and quicker performance, too. But the ID 4’s interior is miles better and, well, I’ll let you figure out whether you have more Tesla or VW service centers nearby. There’s also the not-insignificant $7,500 federal rebate, applicable to the VW but not the Tesla, which means the ID 4 could come in at over $10,000 cheaper.

Not quite flawless, but hard to find a flaw just the same.

The new Chevrolet Bolt EUV is another EV that many will be cross-shopping, and for good reason. It builds on the well-proven Bolt platform, giving a little more room and some fresh styling. No EPA-rated range just yet, but GM’s engineers say to expect around 250 miles. An FWD Premier Bolt EUV has an MSRP of $43,925 including a $995 destination charge. That puts it right within spitting distance of the ID 4.

So, the ID 4 is competitively priced and nice to drive, with enough range to vanquish anxiety and a fresh interior that made me smile. What didn’t make me smile? I have to admit I never really fell for the thing. After the gonzo ID Buggy concept and the amazing charm of the ID Buzz, the ID 4 feels more than a little plain.

But you know what? That’s OK. Not every EV needs to make a statement, and this one exudes quiet confidence. The Volkswagen ID 4 is better than a good car, it’s a great one — it just won World Car of the Year honors— and surely a sign of even better EVs to come from VW.

This series inductor in conjunction with the probe capacitance may cause vibration and overshoot.
