People who make the cut as “honorary brother” to Jack:
✅ Alex Turcotte
Jack had one more "family member" to hug, though. He raced up the aisle and found Alex Turcotte a few rows away. Not only did Turcotte play with Hughes for the NDTP in Plymouth, Michigan, he lived with the Hughes family for two years in nearby Canton. "That's my brother," Hughes said. x
The Hughes family has hosted Jack's teammate, Alex Turcotte for two seasons. Turcotte is like Hughes, a top-tier NHL Draft prospect with an eye on the biggest hockey stages. The boys are just waking up from their naps as we enter. "It's a lot of fun going through the two years with a roommate, making a brother, a best friend," Hughes tells us. x
People who do not make the cut:
❌ Seamus Casey x
#the seamus casey quote from jack was so funny to me#he was like ummmm no. but also. no#Alex Turcotte v underrated for the locker room glue he brought to his ntdp class <3#jack hughes#alex turcotte#post

'it's always been you'
jack was a lot of things you could say, but he was most importantly blairs best friend since he moved to canton years ago. she grew up across the street from the ever chaotic hughes boys, who somehow always pulled her and her brother out of the house.
or at least he was her best friend, once he left for the show; messages and facetimes stopped. her family moved away shortly to san diego after she began her freshman year at university of southern california, double majoring in pre law and political science. she slowly but surely over the course of the years had begun to faze him out of her life, knowing full well he got rid of her too. blair recently graduated from USC with manga cum laude and decided to consider the possibility of moving to new york to start her life. her older brother joey had been out there for 6 years already, with college and now his professional career. and so here she was, two suitcases packed for two full weeks of sightseeing and potential job hunting in the city.
she strolled out of jfk, looking for her brother who stood waiting beside his car and once the two found one another they quickly jogged over to one another. "hey sis, glad you made it in safety!" he said taking the two suitcases from the girl, to put in the trunk. she hopped in the driver side, quickly connecting her phone to the Bluetooth. "couldn't wait 2 secs could you?" he joked, as he hopped in hearing olivia rodrigo blaring. "nah." she grinned, letting her parents know she was with her brother. "coffee?" he mused, and she nodded excitedly. "ya know it." she smiled.
•
she had been here 2 days already and had done some sightseeing with her brother on the first day, and then yesterday explored lower manhattan and had stopped in to see where her brother worked, in the financial district. tonight though, they were going to be going out with some of his friend group and she was nervous. she hated being in a room of people in public no less without meeting them first one on one, but he promised her they were cool and very chill. besides, they were excited to meet the young girl who kept him on his toes. and the one who always had a joke to say. she sat down at the vanity an hour before they had to leave and quickly did some natural makeup and loose waves, before picking out a black crop long sleeve, short black faux leather skirt, black ankle boots and a small green purse. she walked out to the living room greeting her brother's girlfriend who smiled widely. "ouuu yes! i love the outfit blair!" she said genuinely and blair blushed. "you look great, i love it! you are gonna rock it." mogan spoke softer so just she could hear it and blair nodded, and thanked her for the support. she had changed over the course of four years and her body changed drastically. her 5'2 figure took a hit and that in turn lowered her self esteem and confidence within herself. she had been invited over the years to visit two friends at university of michigan but felt so poorly of herself, she never went. she didn't want anybody to see how much she'd change, even went as far to make a new instagram. besides, she had a whole new life out in california and that made it easier for her to never look back. and lets be honest, she didn't want jack or his brothers to see how she looked. she had adored the middle child the three years she knew him and once things started to change, she knew she could never be enough for him.
morgan grabbed ahold of the girl's hand as they walked towards the restaurant in greenwhich village. "have you guys been here before?" blair questioned as they quickly went to their usual seats. morgan nodded, "yeah all the time!" she beamed. the three walked towards the back, their friends all jumping up to greet the sister. "hi I'm jackson, nice to meet the girl who keeps him on his toes!" the dark haired man said causing her to laugh, "ofcourse! blair nice to meet you jackson!" she said hugging him back quickly. "I'm jackie! i work with morgan, nice to finally meet you! heard so much about ya. by the way, i love the outfit!!!" jackie said hugging the girl, and blair smiled thanking her. she moved on to three other people, two girls and a guy and then she sat down next to her brother. "has he convinced you yet to move here full time?" aaron questioned and she shook her head at the tall redhead. "nah not yet, though I'm sure its coming." she giggled, and the rest laughed. the waiter came over to collect drink orders, and she ordered a cranberry vodka and water. "where do you wanna work again?" her brother asked and blair smiled, "either go to law school to become yknow a lawyer or in a government agency. not too sure yet." she said shrugging and the others nodded. "well I'm sure jackson could hook you up, he works for town hall." and jackson shrugged nodding. "yeah, its a nice gig." he said. the group fell into a comfortable conversation, and trying to get to know the girl a bit more.
two hours later, they decided to head up to upper east side to go to a club, and so they made the almost hour treck up from Greenwich village. they ended up at one that the group frequented and once they got inside, joey took blair up to the bar to get drinks. the two stood there conversing as they waited for the drinks. that's when she saw him. no, not jack but the knock off kurt russell who played in california. somehow, she'd avoided him despite her parents living in the same area as him. trevor did a double take to the siblings before clapping his hand on joey's shoulder, causing blair to look up and catch trevors eye. "hey man, whats up?" joey said turning around and bro hugging with him. "good good, playing in the best league is more than i could ask!" trevor said cheekily and joey nodded, turning back to blair. trevor looked at blair as if she was somebody he'd never met before, "is this your girl?" trevor asked somewhat crass. blair shook her head, "no this is blair!" joey said looking at trevor like he was an idiot. "oh my god blair! how are you?! i didn't even recognize you." trevor said now realizing his mistake and blair took that to heart. she swallowed hardly, trying to not cry. she cursed her damn sensitivity. "i-im alright." she said smiling weakly, before looking over and seeing the tray of drinks. "good seeing you man." joey said somewhat crass, annoyed with the hockey player. "yeah, you too! is it true your parents are in newport?" he asked and joey nodded before walking off with blair. trevor stood their for a brief few seconds before taking drink and rushing back to the group.
blair chugged her cranberry vodka, surprisingly fast. joey watched as she did so, and then went to take a shot of tequila. she coughed as it finished going down, and he clapped her back a few times. "I'm gonna get another one." she said and joey wrapped an arm around her, not allowing her too. "no you're not getting drunk..at least not yet." he winked and she rolled her eyes. "come on lets go dance, girly!" morgan said pulling the girl out to the dance floor. ofcourse dancing queen had to be on, and the girl jumped in a circle along with jackie and annabelle the other girl that was jackson's girlfriend.
as soon as trevor reached the group that consisted of quinn, luke, jack, alex, cole, pk and a few other players in their group. "yo guys you wont believe i just saw at the bar!" he said freaking out, and some of the guys laughed. "who?" alex questioned throwing an arm over his shoulder. "joey and blair anderson!" he said breathlessly. "woah calm down their bud." alex joked laughing, as the three hughes searched the crowd for the siblings. once blair left right after the draft to move with her parents to california, joey fell off the face of the planet as well. quinn and joey had been the closest due to age and playing for usndtp together, and so that had hurt him as well. "where is she? i see joey but not her." jack said looking at trevor and trevor searched the crowd too. "she looks completely different, i thought she was his girlfriend." and then he found her. trevor pointed towards the quartet of girls, and jack needed no confirmation of which one was which. the same dark hair that sometimes crept up in his dreams was the same as when they were in highschool. he took in how much she had changed physically and absolutely adored the softness of her hips that peeked out from her cropped sweater. the subtle roundness of her cheeks, with her dimples ever present.
"damn shes changed." cole said and jack could feel the judgeness of his voice, as he finished that statement. "so?" jack said feeling himself getting angry and then cole recognized his mood changing. "like it fucking matters." quinn said hitting cole in the chest, understanding what cole was trying to say. "I'm getting another drink." jack said standing up and walking towards the bar. back on the dance floor, blair craved another cranberry vodka and pulled morgan over with her. "hi, can i please have a cranberry vodka!" blair asked and they nodded, putting it on joeys tab. blair and morgan talked at the bar, not realizing that jack was on the other end of it downing two shots. "thankyou!" blair said taking the drink and shot that was put down in front of the two. the two clinked the glasses together and once on the bar before throwing them back. blair coughed again and laughed as morgan's face grimaced. as soon as jack heard the coughing, he looked down and realized that blair was inches from him. now or never he thought, as she was about to walk off. "blair!" he said but she didn't hear him, he took two big steps and called her once again and she froze, before turning around. who could possibly know me here, she asked herself. she turned around jack and her eyes went wide. "blai-" he said once more, reaching out a hand before she speed off with morgan back to the table. jack caught joey's eye and his eyes went wide as well before turning his attention back to blair. jack stood there seeing if joey would walk over, but he didn't. instead the two of them plus morgan calling it a night.
•
it was the next morning and blair was staring at the ceiling of the guest bedroom. she groaned rolling over, and pushing her face into the pillow. she hadn't been able to get jacks shocked face out of her head the whole night. she had had a nightmare about the summer she left for california with her parents, and he had forgotten her birthday. she didn't realize she was crying until she heard a sob tumble out of her, as her mind with self doubts. she sat up, crying into her hands and thanked the universe her brother and his girlfriend had left for brunch awhile ago. she declined their invitation and said she just wanted to sleep. she wiped her tears, and got out of bed throwing on a sweater and a pair of black leggings and her birkenstocks on. she decided she needed some coffee and a breakfast sandwich to lift her mood just a bit. she walked out of her brothers apartment and headed down to starbucks on the corner. she took in the sights, smells and sound of saturday early afternoon. she thanked the person that opened the door for her, and headed to the line quickly. she got her usual cold brew and sausage sandwich, and sat down at the table by the window. she scrolled through tiktok, trying her very hardest to laugh like a maniac in public.
about 30 minutes into her stay, she felt somebody staring but she pushed it away. not wanting to give anybody her undivided attention. she stood up a few minutes later, and headed towards the trash to throw away her garbage. as she was about to open the door, somebody did it for her. she looked up at the blue eyes she had once adored. she sighed seeing trevor and cole accompanying the player. she walked out quickly, heading back to her brothers apartment. she was close to the door once she heard her name. she rolled her eyes knowing it was jack, and so she slowed down a bit and waited for him to catch up. "blair!" he said finally reaching her and stepped in front of her. her eyebrows creased, looking up at him. all 5'11 of him. "yes?" she questioned, crossing her arms across her chest. he knew that nervous tick she had done from the very first time they met. "uh- how are you doing?" he asked, pushing some hair out of his face. she rolled her eyes, and continued her trek towards the front door of the apartment building. "wait blair!" he said pulling her arm, and she yanked it back. "hi how are you doing? after four years jack, seriously? fuck off." she breathed, turning back. "hey you didn't reach out either, ok?" he said and she stopped looking back at him. "i congratulated you, you ass. i texted you the night you got drafted and never got a response, jack. so that's on you, not me." she seethed, and he realized that he'd been in the wrong. "i cried every night that summer, in a scary and strange new place and you- you didn't even reach out once my parents dropped the move on your parents." she said feeling tears pool her eyes. "all i wanted was my best friend and you didn't care enough about me it seems, which is on me." she said before turning back to the door. "blair please." he pleaded. she opened it and looked back at jack who stood there processing everything. "come on jack." she said holding the door for him, and he quickly took the chance.
•
she set her coffee down on the kitchen counter and placed her hands on her hips, trying to figure out what she wanted to say. "i'm sorry i didn't respond, I'm sorry i never reached out to you or said happy birthday. i know that's on me, there's no excuse for it. i didn't find out you moved until august when we came back to for a michigan game, and my parents told us. they'd kept it from us because they didn't want to tell us over text, but in person. i realized that i had tested fate, thinking you'd be home waiting for me. and - and i guess i was heartbroken that you didn't tell me yourself. i was losing my best friend and somebody i - i had fallen for.. in one moment." he sighed as he paused, biting his lip. blair turned around at his confession, did he really just say that? he met her eye, as she processed it. "it doesn't matter anymore jack, im not that same girl. hell, i haven't been that same girl since i left. things changed pretty quickly for me freshman year, and i-i- im not meant to be in your life clearly." she said pinching her nose. "whats that supposed to mean? why arent you supposed to be in my life?" he asked, stepping towards her and invading her space. he grabbed ahold of her hands, and she pulled them back. she shook her head, looking at the floor. "im not the kind of girl you're supposed to be seen with." she said sadly, "look at me jack. i changed in more than one way when i moved...and have fought so many battles just to be standing here today. one's you can't fathom." she said shutting her eyes, "haven't you realized its always been you?" he whispered and she reopened her eyes to look up at him. "what?" she said barely coming out as a whisper. he smiled softly chuckling a bit, "you are your hardheadedness could never see how hard i was trying to get you to realize i liked you more than as a friend. i was trying so hard, the guys couldn't help but laugh at every attempt. calling me a fool knowing you'd never realize until i said something." he said shaking his head as if he couldn't believe the years he spent pining over her. "wait what?" she said looking into his eyes. "you thought i was just being nice? oh no..I'm not that nice to just anybody" he said laughing and she shook her head blushing. "you fool! you idiot!" she said slapping his chest, somewhat angry and somewhat sad. he grabbed ahold of her hands again and pulled them into his chest, "its always been you bean, i have never once stopped thinking about you, even if you did change your Instagram and slip off the face of the earth. i still never stopped, you can ask my brothers." he said inching closer to her face. she blinked twice before biting the inside of her cheek, "but I'm not right for you." she said frustratedly. he shook his head, "i like this version of you blair, don't sell yourself too short. i know i will absolutely adore you, bean. i promise you that." he said before placing his lips on hers. their lips felt as if they had kissed a million times before. she moved her hands up to his neck, desperate to be as close as possible. he wrapped his arms around her hips before moving to her lower back. they pulled apart, resting their foreheads against one another's, catching their breaths.
tears pooled both of their eyes as they looked at one another, "I've thought about doing that for years." he said cheekily and she grinned, "I've been waiting for that for years too." she hummed before reconnecting them.
•
one last hurrah was planned to michigan before the season started and jack invited her to his and his brother's lake house near where they grew up. she had met up with the three of them the day before they planned to leave for brunch. "i-i don't know." she said leaning back in her chair. "go have fun, ill still be here when you wanna come back." joey said from beside her, "there its been decided." quinn smiled lightly clapping his hands together.
•
jack took ahold of blair's hand as they walked through detroit airport, walking towards baggage claim. "I'm nervous." she whispered to him as they waited. he wrapped his arm around her shoulder and looked at her in the eyes, "you have no idea how much they've missed you hun. everything will be great." he said kissing her temple. she nodded, resting her head against his chest. they made it out 15 minutes later and searched for ellen and jimmy's car. once they heard that blair was coming into town, they quickly volunteered to pick them up. once ellen found luke in the crowd, she saw quinn then jack and then on the girl she had always considered her daughter. jimmy found them as well and smiled at ellen once he saw that her and jack were holding hands. "blair!" ellen smiled widely, wrapping her arms around the girl. blair was transported back to one of the first hugs she had received from the queen herself and melted. "i've missed you so much babygirl!" she whispered before pulling back to inspect the 5'2 girl. "don't hound her." jimmy joked, and blair smiled before hugging him. jimmy had also considered the young girl their daughter, a testament to the amount of time she spent over at the house. blair stepped back, right to jacks side as they all put the luggage in the back. luke hopped in first, with quinn in the back and then jack and her sat in the middle seats. they drove towards the lakehouse.
•
jack gave a tour to blair, and she could only imagine how much fun the three had here during the offseason. it was definitely a bachelors pad, with the amount of boyish and frat items they possessed. "this is your room." jack said opening the guest room door and she saw her luggage. she nodded softly before thanking him. "its late i should start getting ready for bed." she said and he nodded before walking out. she sat on the bed placing her head in her hands. she took in the very clean and crisp guestroom, knowing full well ellen had her hand in here at some point. blair quickly got ready for bed, and then tossed and turned for two hours not being able to fall asleep. especially knowing jack was down the hall, mere feet away from her. the summer after they moved to canton, her and his family went out to new hampshire and spent a month out there living with them. and there were many nights the two fell asleep in each others arms, one or the other not wanting to go back to their bed after talking for hours. jack down the hall was tossing and turning as well, thinking about the same thing. he was about to get up when he heard a soft knock at his door, before it opened. he heard the familiar soft feet of blairs. she had an oversized trojan t-shirt draping over her small frame, as she finally came into view. the moonlight cascading into the bedroom windows, allowing him to see all of her. "i couldn't sleep." she said and he got up, "me neither." he now stood in front of her, and she could feel the familiar warmth of him as he did so. the familiar chest of the hockey player, directly in her eyesight. "i had a feeling you'd be up, bean." he hummed smirking and she rolled her eyes. "what can i say, i missed my twin." she mused looking up at him. "its a good thing i missed you too." he said pulling her in by the cheeks and kissing her. they moved in sync towards the bed, molten with newfound freedom and feelings.
she sat back on the edge of the bed, jack coming in between her legs and then moving her further into the bed. they parted for a brief second, "are you sure?" he questioned and she nodded before she reconnected the two's lips. jack wasted no time in taking her shirt off and then her shorts, but slowly took her all in as if they'd never be in this situation again. "you are a fuckin goddess." he spoke into her neck, planting a few kisses down it. her back arched softly, wanting more of him. she pressed a kiss into his lips as things progressed into more.
•
the two laid in each other's arms, the sun now rising. jack had spent time whispering sweet nothings and sweet words that made her heart swell, for the past two hours. they also spent time talking about what they had missed in the past few years, and talked about their future and what they wanted to do. together and separately. she now had her head on his chest, and was looking up at him. "i want you to come to jersey, i don't care if its fast or careless but i cant go anymore without you. i don't think my heart could handle it." he said softly and she smiled. "thankfully i planned on heading out there." she grinned now, as he smiled. he placed a kiss on her lips once more, entangling once again.

1950 Oldsmobile Polynesian Coupe
It’s the early 1950s, and the world of custom cars is booming with excitement. In the midst of this automotive frenzy, one car stands out—the Polynesian. Crafted in 1952 by the talented folks at Valley Customs in Burbank, California.

1950 Oldsmobile Polynesian Coupe
This special car was ordered by Jack Stewart, a car lover from Canton, Ohio. Fresh from military service, Stewart fell in love with custom cars when he saw Dunn’s Ford at the Motorama show in Los Angeles.
The Exciting Transformation

1950 Oldsmobile Polynesian Coupe
Completely captivated, Stewart got in touch with Neil Emory and Clayton Jensen of Valley Custom. He had a dream to transform his ’50 Oldsmobile 88, and over nine months, the car underwent an incredible makeover.
The changes included a 4-inch body section, a redesigned front, unique fender skirts, and a cool front bumper/grille made from a ’47 Olds bumper. The headlights got a special touch, and ’52 Studebaker taillights were treated the same way.
Emory and Jensen, who were true experts, used hammer-welding and metal-finishing to make the car look fantastic, ending with a beautiful orchid metallic finish.
In the Limelight

1950 Oldsmobile Polynesian Coupe
Debuting in Hot Rod magazine in September 1953, the Polynesian became a star. It even won ‘best of show’ at the first Michigan Auto Rama in 1953, proving it was a showstopper. The car appeared in many magazines and books, becoming famous in the world of custom cars.
A Mysterious Disappearance and a Glorious Comeback

1950 Oldsmobile Polynesian Coupe
But like many classic cars, the Polynesian disappeared mysteriously, hiding away in storage for a long time where it faced the effects of time. It wasn’t until 2005 that a dedicated owner decided to restore it to its former glory carefully.
Under the Hood

1950 Oldsmobile Polynesian Coupe
Beneath the shiny exterior is the powerful heart of the Polynesian—a strong 324 cubic-inch Oldsmobile V8 engine. With a .030 overbore, egge cast aluminum pistons, and a 9:1 compression ratio, this engine brings the iconic custom coupe to life.
In essence, the Polynesian tells a story of a time when people put their hearts and skills into making timeless cars.
With its triumphant return, this Oldsmobile 88 Holiday 2-door coupe keeps capturing the imaginations of car lovers, showing that classic custom cars will always be fascinating.

Happy Birthday, William McKinley!
ahh, McKinley. The tariff man…
on January 29th, 1843, William McKinley Jr. was born in Niles, Ohio, to a well off family. Mother, father, and eight siblings! McKinley was a well rounded lad.
he sort of looks like David herold.
anyway, young McKinley served in the American civil war . He was known for his bravery, achieving the rank of brevet major by the time the war had ended, an impressive feat for an enlisted man. He was the last president to serve in the Civil War, and would eventually write a biography of sorts about the events that took place. In fact, Rutherford B Hayes commanded McKinley’s regiment!
young William saw a lot of action on the battlefield, often risking his life- he was present for the battle of Antietam, the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, where he showed great bravery and was promoted.

When McKinley returned home, he opened a law office in Canton. McKinley soon became involved in… Republican politics! he gave speeches in support of now-governor Hayes, and eventually ended up running for Stark Country prosecuting attorney… resulting in a shocking victory from the scrappy young lad, now politically active!
he was also… sexually active:

Will was soon married to Ida Saxton, a belle of Canton society. They married in 1871 and had two daughters, Katie and little Ida. Unfortunately, the pregnancies were tough on Mrs. McKinley. Not only this, but little Ida, born 1873, died. Katie also ended up dying of typhoid at the age of five- Ida never got over the deaths of her babies. She soon developed a multitude of physical and mental issues, prominently epilepsy. For the rest of his life, Will would remain devoted to his wife- part of the reason he ran a “front porch campaign” when he ran for president. He couldn’t leave Ida’s side, so why not have his many supporters come to him!
that’s right!
William McKinley, after successfully being elected to congress and taking a place as Governor of Ohio (effectively becoming a renowned political figure across the country) decided it was time to run in the 1896 presidential election. Alongside VP Mark Hanna, with overwhelming support from his supporters everywhere, he beat William Jennings Bryan in the election.

Aaand there’s Grover Cleveland too.
McKinley’s presidency saw the emergence of America as a global power. McKinley was and is known for his heavy policy of imperialism, eventually heading to war with Spain in 1898. Yes, the Spanish-American war, a heavily useless war…. Eventually America took control of Cuba, the Philippines, and Guam. They established close trade relations with China, a country that was just emerging in the world of global relations. McKinley introduced the gold standard, and was and is heavily criticized for his role in handling big business. Capitalism boomed heavily, and soon the largest of companies were richer than the government.
Overall, despite his shortcomings in things like civil rights and foreign policy, McKinley was well favored by the people.
Speaking of the industry a paragraph before the last, William McKinley was favored especially by unions and individual workers of the day.
except for one.
On September 6th, 1901, at the Pan-American Exposition 🎶🎶🎶in Buffalooo🎶🎶🎶, a huge World’s Fair dedicated to showing off America’s technological progress and advancements, McKinley was greeting fairgoers. Many adoring citizens, eager to meet the man, lined up one by one to shake hands with the president.
Unemployed worker and anarchist Leon Czolgosz, 🎶born in the middle of Michigan🎶 to Polish parents in 1873, concealed a gun beneath a handkerchief. When McKinley extended his hand for a shake, Czolgosz swatted it away and shot at him twice. One bounced off his button and missed. The other lodged itself in McKinley’s stomach.

Czolgosz got the electric chair.
McKinley appeared to be in good condition, but began rapidly deteriorating…. On September thirteenth, 25th US President William McKinley died of a gangrenous infection on the walls of his stomach. As he drifted away, some accounts say he was singing his favorite hymn, ‘Nearer My God to Thee’
effectively, TEDDY ROOSEVELT BECAME PRESIDENT!!! HELL YEAH! YEAH TEDDY WHOOOOOO YEAH ! YEAH YEAH! THEODORE FUCKING ROOSEVELT!!!! AIRHORN NOISE!!!! MANLY!!!!!!

TAXIDERMY AND STUFF HELL YEAH!!!!! I DONT FUCKING KNOW!!! STRUGGLING TO PRONOUCNE LEON CZOLGOSZ’S NAME!!!! MOUNTAIN IN ALASKA RAAHHHHHH 🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Sorry this one was lackluster, it was on short notice… I recommend reading “President McKinley” by Robert W Merry.
It’s a very cohesive biography and entertaining, too!

McKinley has been a huge focus in my life and I really enjoy reading and writing about my favorite president. He wasn’t perfect but he was quite an interesting man and thus has all the makings of a researchable guy. Did you know he smoked 20 cigars a day?
want to know more about Leon Czolgosz? Because let me tell you, he was a researchable guy… don’t take my word for it. Take @czolgosz’s!
thanks,
Sam Mckinleygirl98
see you in September for the big time death post!

Anyone But Him
Prologue-Discontinued Version
Jack Hughes/Original Character
Summary: The day Luke Hughes has been waiting years for finally arrives-Draft Day, little does he know this day will bring a new beginning for more than just him.
WARNINGS: Underage Drinking, mentions of death of a parent
A/N: I'm gonna be so honest I'm not sure if this classifies as a prologue because I couldn't give you the definition of one, but I had already planned out all my chapters when I decided to add this so now it's called a prologue. I have posted previous versions of a story entitled Anyone But Him on this tumblr but I have spent the last few months deciding I want to rewrite it. The previous versions will not be deleted but I will not be continuing them either. Starting from this chapter will be the series I will be writing from. Also I’m aware Luke was drafted in July not June because of Covid but for this story Covid did not happen, but the draft was still switched to a remote version due to something else. This is also posted on AO3 and I hope you enjoy it!
June 20th, 2021, Draft Day
The walls surrounding the spacious living room in Canton, Michigan owned by Ellen and Jim Hughes, appear to vibrate with a mixture of excitement and anticipation as a large crowd of familiar faces gather inside the space, their voices laced with emotion as they eagerly whisper predictions and hopes for the upcoming moment.
Along the edges of the room, a camera crew stands silently, capturing this important moment. Their lenses remain focused on the nervous faces, surrounding the large television.
At the center of attention, 17-year-old Luke Hughes sits rigidly on the edge of his seat, his navy blue suit stretching across his broad shoulders and tall frame.
As he watches the numbers on the television continue to descend, counting down to the next draft pick, his heart relentlessly thumps against his ribcage and his fingers begin to tremble uncontrollably, betraying his conscious efforts at appearing calm.
To the right of him, his oldest brother Quinn-the one he’s idolized for years-sits his posture impeccable as his fingers move his dark brown hair away from his face. Quinn silently offers a nod, a small gesture of reassurance, in an attempt to ease his youngest brother's nerves.
On the other side of Luke, his brother Jack, remains calm and collected, his body leaning comfortably against the back of the couch, as he allows a playful grin to curl at the corner of his mouth as if to say “Been there, Done that”
They’ve been through this before, not in this exact space, but the same anticipation, same nervousness, of waiting to hear your name called, to find out if all the work, all the late-night practices, all the hours you spent watching the same plays over and over again, if all of it was enough to make it to the NHL.
Quinn had endured this waiting game in 2018, as the Canucks 7th overall pick, and Jack-who had a much shorter waiting period being first overall- felt the same nerves, up until the moment the New Jersey Devils announced his name, and now it’s Luke’s turn.
The waiting is almost suffocating as the numbers continue winding down. The fourth pick would be chosen soon, a pick held by the Devils.
Luke turns his head to the space next to Quinn, where the gorgeous girl with light brown hair and a flowy blue dress, is perched on the edge of her seat, her blue eyes glued to the screen with unwavering focus and concentration. His gaze lingers there for a moment longer, his heart fluttering with a feeling he can’t quite name yet. It’s the same girl who knows nearly everything about him, the one who’s shown up to every single one of his games for the past five years, the one who’s spent more nights in his bed than he could count, the one who sees him as as more than just a friend, the one that sees him as a brother. It’s Sadie, his best friend.
His eyes flutter to the conjoining side of the couch where his mother Ellen and grandmother Penny are seated, their hands clasped tightly together and their eyes beaming with a mixture of pride and anxiety.
On the other side of Jack, Jim, their father, and his younger brother Marty, share a tense posture from two armchairs, strategically placed next to the couch, their shoulders stiff with anticipation.
The coffee table in front of Luke is adorned with an array of hats each proudly representing a different NHL team. Luke nervously fiddles with his tie, his fingers itching to pick one up, to claim it as his own, to write his own future. But Not yet, Not until his name is called.
Luke stares at the hats, their colors blurring as his thoughts race. This moment was more than just a personal milestone, this was his whole life, everything he has worked for since he was two years old, everything his family has worked for, his coaches, his teammates, every game, every win, every loss, all of it has led to this moment. His moment.
The final seconds on the screen wind down, and the crowded room falls into a hushed silence, every eye trained on the screen as Tom Fitzgerald, the General Manager for the New Jersey Devils, approaches the podium.
Luke feels an invisible sting tugging at his spine, pulling him upright, and every muscle in his body begins to coil, prepapering to spring or recoil-whichever fate decides. The pulse in his throat hums, a silent prayer escaping through his clenched teeth, while the rest of the room, a mirror of anticipation, holds its breath.
“With the fourth overall pick the New Jersey Devils are proud to select…from the USA National Development Program…Luke Hughes”
The words hang in the air suspended for a moment, before reality sets in and the room erupts into chaos, a mixture of cheers and applause filling the room.
Jack, unable to contain his excitement after learning his baby brother was drafted by his team, practically tackles Luke in a bear hug, his joy contagious, as Quinn wraps both his brothers in a tight hug, congratulating Luke.
Sadie stands beside him, her own smile beaming with pride and joy “The Devils!” she exclaims with a joyful laugh, as Luke turns to hug her tightly.
Deafening cheers continue to erupt as Luke’s arms squeeze tightly around each member of his family.
The TV in the background buzzes with commentary from the draft analysis. Their voices blend together with excitement “...and there you have it folks, Luke Hughes, will be joining his brother Jack in the NHL, what an incredible moment for the Hughes family…”
Luke’s eyes briefly flicker to the screen as one commentator adds, “...and let’s not forget, Luke is already committed to the University of Michigan, like his brother Quinn. What a powerhouse program they’re building there. He’s going to make quite the impact in the NCAA before he takes the ice in the NHL.”
He turns his eyes back towards Sadie, a mixture of excitement rising inside him, at the reminder, he gets to go to his dream school, with his best friend. He watches Sadie tightly embrace his mom, tears of joy streaming down both their faces, as Jack reaches down to pick up a red hat with the iconic Devils logo, and hands it to Luke, who places it on his head. He made it.
***
About an hour later the initial excitement and shock had begun to dispute, Luke had finally finished the whirlwind of interviews he found himself in, and he’s able to join the lively party taking place in the backyard courtesy of his parents.
As he steps outside he’s met with a mixture of chaos and excitement. The nearly 70 people that were previously crowding inside the living room, had all spilled out into the backyard.
The scent of fresh pizza mingled with the tang of barbecue sauce-an elite combination-accompanied by laughter, chatter and loud music coming from the speakers, fill the outside air.
Luke maneuvers his way through the crowd of people, exchanging hugs, and fist bumps with friends and family, until he arrives at the barbecue area where a group of his friends are standing.
He grabs a paper plate from a nearby stack and selects a piece of pepperoni pizza, before standing to the side of the group and listening in, a tap on his shoulder pulls him from his thoughts.
He turns around to see Sadie standing there with a smile plastered across her face.
“Congratulations!” Sadie exclaims, pulling him into a tight hug.
Luke lets his arms rest around her small waist for a moment longer, the feeling of his heart fluttering returning.
“Thanks Sades,” Luke replies grinning from ear to ear “I couldn’t have done it without you”
Sadie playfully rolls her eyes before replying with a smirk “Oh please, you would’ve made it either way”
Luke shares a similar smirk before countering “Nuh uh I think showing up to my games was crucial to my success. Kinda like having my own personal cheerleader”
Sadie laughs and narrows her eyes in his direction, delivering a playful threat “Watch it Lukey, You know I’ll push you into pool if I need too”
The two exchange a look, a look only readable by them as a result of several years of friendship.
The moment is interrupted by one of their friends Michael, a friend from high school, inviting them into the lively debate over the ultimate question of which pizza topping reigns supreme “Luke, Sadie help us settle this, which is better pepperoni or sausage?”
“Definitely pepperoni” Luke declares with no hesitation
Michael shakes his head in disagreement, before continuing the conversation “None of you have taste buds!” he claims.
A wave of laughter washes over the group, when Luke hears a voice call his name “Hey Hughes!”
He turns around to see his close friend Chase effortlessly weaving his way through the crowd to reach him.
Luke takes a few steps closer to Chase, slightly distancing himself from the group. “Chase, hey man” Luke greets with a casual nod
With a mischievous glint in his eye, Chase leans in closer to Luke and directs his gaze towards Sadie, “Alright spill it,” Chase begins lowering his voice despite the noise around them “Have you talked to Sadie yet?”
Luke Adam’s apple bobs as he swallows hard, his gaze instinctively seeking out the girl in question, who was now energetically tossing her hands up, defending her love for pineapple on pizza.
“Yeah, I’ve…talked to her” Luke sheepishly responds. It’s not entirely a lie-he did talk to her about the draft-but that’s not what Chase was asking.
“You know what I mean, about how you feel?” Chase presses his simple question speaking volumes to the complex feelings that stirred within him.
Chase was one of the few people that knew how Luke felt about Sadie, beyond their platonic relationship, and he only found out after their senior prom prior, when Luke had planned on taking Sadie, as friends-at least that’s what he told her-but their plans fell short, when another guy asked Sadie, leaving Luke somewhat heartbroken, although he wasn’t quiet sure why. Chase on the other hand, quickly put the pieces together, and has been trying to offer encouragement ever since.
“No” Luke confesses, tugging at the collar of his shirt, suddenly feeling suffocated by the formality of it. “I haven’t said anything, we’ll both be at Michigan come fall and I just I just don’t wanna mess up a good thing you know”
Luke was more than happy to use the excuse of Michigan to end this conversation, because it was true, Luke didn’t need to worry about it now, They still have at least two years ahead of them, it was plenty of time for him to figure out his feelings.
Chase claps him on the shoulder, a gesture heavy with unvoiced understanding “Well I guess you got time, just don’t wait too long for someone else to swoop her up, cus she’s a catch” he says a hint of encouragement and teasing threading through his tone “And hey now that you’re a first-round NHL pick, anythings possible right”
“Right,” Luke repeats, reassured by the simplicity in Chase’s logic. Anything is possible, including finally telling Sadie about the way his heart speeds up whenever she’s around or how he wishes more than anything he could lean over and kiss her.
But not today. Today is a day for celebration. The other stuff well that can wait.
***
The evening sky continues to paint a canvas of deep blues and purples as laughter mingles with the fading daylight. Luke’s hand is still tingling from the countless handshakes and high fives he’s given through the night, when Jack’s teasing voice cuts through the noise.
“Hey Moosey, come here” Jack beckons flashing a mischievous grin, well this ought be fun, Luke thinks as he walks closer toward his brother, and now future teammate.
Quinn appears beside Jack, nodding in agreement, a silent partner in whatever scheme Jack has planned.
Quinn wraps an arm around Luke’s shoulder and steers him through the crowd towards a more secluded area.
Once their feet are planted in an area, out of sight from the majority of the guests, Quinn being the only one of the three who could legally drink, reaches behind a plant, and pulls out three bottles of beer, which he had snuck from the drink station a few minutes prior.
Jack and Luke exchange a look-the kind shared by siblings who knew all too well the tale of bending a few rules.
“Seriously” Luke raises an eyebrow glancing at Quinn.
Despite prior accusations, typically coming from their mom or dad, Quinn was not accustomed to sneaking alcohol for his youngest brother, seeing as how Quinn still sees him as the baby of the family.
Jack on the other hand, had no issues, flashing a compelling smile, towards the pretty girl, who works weekends at a nearby liquor store, in exchange for her ‘forgetting’ to check his ID, allowing Jack to successfully buy a bottle or two for his younger brother.
“Only because it’s your night,” Quinn says, the corners of his mouth twitching with suppressed amusement.
Jack checks over his shoulder before passing one bottle to Luke “Don’t worry, I’ll take the fall if mom catches us” Jack assures knowing Ellen and Jim would not be too pleased to find Quinn drinking, let alone all three of them, especially considering the legality of it.
Luke wraps his fingers around the cold bottle, and pops the cap off, a fizzing sound erupting.
“Consider this like a rite of passage” Jack says his voice low but warm, as he raises his bottle towards the middle of the three brothers, a clicking sound occurring as Luke and Quinn do the same.
Luke brings the beer to his lips, the taste of bitterness and roasted barley trickling on his taste buds.
“Thanks guys” Luke murmurs, receiving a nod in response.
The backyard behind them, echos with music, but in their bubble it’s just the three of them.
After a few more sips, private words and laughs are exchanged, Luke rejoins the party, weaving through the backyard.
***
Two hours pass by, and the party begins to slowly disperse. Luke navigates his way through the thinning crowd of people, his mind seeking a moment of solitude as the noise and energy surrounding him starts to blur.
“Luke! A photo?”
“Congrats again man!”
“Can’t wait to see you play”
The voices bounce around him, well-meaning but overwhelming. Finally he reaches the sliding doors leading to the kitchen, and slips inside to the quiet, deserted space.
Luke, stands alone, leaning against the cool countertops, closing his eyes as he lets out a measure breath. His only company the hum of the refrigerator and his thoughts.
The events throughout the night play like a movie inside his head, leading to the return of Chase’s question. Sadie’s image flickers behind his closed eyelids, and a smile tugs at his lips as he imagines the possibility of a future with Sadie, a future where they’re more than just friends.
The soft padding of footsteps interrupt his thoughts as he opens his eyes to find Sadie, walking towards him, her dress swaying gently as she moves.
“Hey” She says, her voice a calm achor in the sea of festivities
“Hey Luke replies, the previous tension in his shoulders easing just a touch “Crazy out there huh”
“Yeah, you’re family knows how to throw a party” she agrees, her gaze lingering on him with a platonic concern “You holding up ok?”
“Ya just needed a breather” Luke responds with a smile
“Me too” Sadie chuckles before leaning against the counter next to him.
“It looks like things are starting to wind down a bit” Sadie gestures with a nod towards the now less crowded backyard.
“Yeah” Luke agrees his eyes fixated on her “Want to crash here tonight?” Luke offers the same way he’s done so, many times before
Sadie hesitates, her eyes wandering around the kitchen. Her lips part, ready to speak, “I don’t think I can, I came with my dad” Sadie tells him
“Gotcha” Luke nods, understanding flashing in his eyes. A figure appears near the entrance of the kitchen. It’s Sadie’s dad, David.
Sadie and Luke move closer together, Sadie’s arm momentarily brushing against Luke’s as Sadie’s father approaches them.
“Great party, Luke and congratulations again,” David says, offering a firm handshake, that Luke returns.
“Thank you for coming Mr. Howe” Luke replies his tone genuine
The three engage in some polite small talk, the conversation light and familiar, as David is a good friend of Luke’s parents.
“How are things going at the station?” Luke asks
“They’re going well, although we have had some crazy calls about teenagers getting into some trouble, I hope you two are staying safe?” He replies
“Of course Dad” Sadie answers
As the conversation continues, several people make their way through the living room, making their departure from the party.
“I think we should head home, Sadie” David says glancing between his daughter and her best friend
“Right” Sadie agrees, a small speckle of reluctance shown in her posture.
“I’ll see you soon Sades” Luke says, his voice tingling with a hint of sadness, as the three make their way towards the entry of the home.
“Definitely” Sadie promises her smile bittersweet as she follows her dad out the door.
Luke returns to the kitchen, the house feeling slightly emptier. He stares at the space Sadie, previously occupied, and exhales slowly. He has time.
***
Sadie enters her house the sound of the closing door, echoing softly behind her. She climbs the stairs, each step deliberate. Finally reaching the top she makes her way to her room, flicking te lights on, and quietly closing the door behind her.
She begins stripping off the baby blue dress and heels, that have been torturing her feet for the last several hours, and replaces them with a pair of comfy sweatpants, an oversized sweatshirt and her fluffy blue slippers.
She stands in front of her mirror, removing each piece of jewelry, from the dainty earrings to the statement bracelet with a large S and the multiple rings. The only exception being her gold necklace with a delicate chain and a pendant bearing the words ‘one in a million’ a precious gift from her late mother, that she never takes off.
She moves towards her desk to put her jewlery away, carefully placing each piece back in their designated spots, when a large white envelope catches her eye.
It’s addressed to her, from Rutgers University.
A school she has dreamed of attending since she was a little girl, her mothers school.
Sadie’s fingers tremble as she reaches down to pick up the envelope. A few weeks ago, she applied on a whim to the school, never thinking she would actually get in.
She moves to her bed, taking a seat on the edge and taking a deep breath, before tearing open the seal and eagerly pulling the contents out.
She scans through the words on the paper. “I got in” she whispers
“I GOT IN!” she repeats her voice raising loud enough to be heard through her closed door
“Sadie?” her dad asks the door still shut
Sadie practically leaps off her bed, the letter clutched tightly to her chest as she opens the door.
“Dad I got in! I got into Rutgers!” She exclaims, practically shoving the papers into her dads face.
Her dad softly removes the papers from her hand, reading through each word.
“You got in! Sadie I’m so proud of you” Her dad announces his tone genuine, as he wraps his daughter in a hug.
A surge of accomplishment floods through her body, mixed with a pang of sadness. She had always dreamed of going to this college, but now all she could think about was how much her mom would have loved to see this moment.
“Sades?” Her dad asks his voice ringing with parental concern
“Ya sorry” She replies, shaking her head slightly
“How about I make us ice cream sundaes to celebrate?” Her dad suggests a beloved tradition made up by the two a few years back.
“Ya that sounds good, I’ll be there in a second” Sadie says watching as her dad walks out of her room.
Sadie takes a seat on her bed, unable to shake the feeling that something else is missing. Sadie's gaze falls to the photos displayed on her nightstand. The one of her mom and the one of Luke and her side by side. staring at her nightstand, the picture of her mom.
That’s when it hits her-Luke thinks they’re going to Michigan together.
A/N: I hope you enjoyed! Feel free to send me any comments or feedback! Updates will be rather slow because I have a lot of school work but the first chapter should be coming soon.

OK
last night @toasttt11 and i did some brainstorming for a new Quinn AU
heres what we/i have so far:
Piper Olsen
Born in New York, New York on April 15th, 1999; when her dad, ryan, is playing for the New York Rangers
Her mother died when she was 4 of cancer
After her dad retires he begins coaching. Starting at the University of Michigan as an assistant coach in 2010, under the iconic red berenson, then is announced as the NTDP U18 head coach in 2015 for the 2015-2016 season. At the end of the 2018-2019, season he was asked to be the head coach of the Detroit Red Wings, which is where he currently stays.
She was 11 when they moved to Canton, Michigan
She is a dual athlete doing both Field Hockey and Lacrosse
She is committed to play both at OSU much to her dad, quinn and the hughes' families chagrin but that's where her mom went so she's going there too
Piper x Quinn
piper meets quinn at the USA NTDP tryout camp in the summer of 2014, which she traveled to with her dad
they don't see each other again until they end up in many classes together their junior year of high school
then quinn begins to see her everywhere at the rink at team events everywhere
so a friendship blossoms
its not until the summer when quinn travels back to toronto that they both realize that they miss each other
so after a few awkward months there senior year quinn works up the courage to ask her out
there relationship there freshman year of college is a hard adjustment, but quinn makes it to many of her games and she does the same for him
they last SO LONG because of the rough first year of long distance
the hughes family x piper and ryan olsen
Ryan is why jack and luke are so insistent on also playing in the NTDP.
Jim has worked with Ryan in the past as a coach and always admired his work when he was at umich in development (zach hyman comes to mind) and Quinn never shuts up about him
When Ellen meets Piper for the first time, she immediately understands why her son didn't shut up about her the summer before
Jim loves piper because she works so hard. he admires the kind of athlete she is
and jack and luke are obsessed with her always going to her games especially luke who is always a short drive away during her time at college

teardrops on my guitar || jack hughes

making the bold choice of writing a fic for every song on debut by taylor swift, i’ll do it sporadically and for different people as well!! once i finish debut, we will see if i’m feeling fearless tv ☺️ ambitious, believe me I KNOW. anyways send requests
this is dedicated to @folklorelvr333 —tomg is her fave song on debut and jack is her fave guy (appreciate this bc i had to learn jack hughes LORE for this)
debut masterlist
Jack had moved to Michigan during his last years of high school to further his career in hockey and to try to secure his spot as a draft pick. When he started playing for the U.S. NTDP, he attended Plymouth-Canton Educational Park when he wasn’t on the rink. There, he met you.
Jack hadn’t ever claimed to be good with girls, not really. He liked you, though. He liked you a lot. He remembered being paired up with you in lab during his first week. He thought he’d made his interest incredibly obvious. That was, if his pink cheeks and clammy hands weren’t a telltale sign of his trying to flirt with you. Mistakenly, he’d realized he’d done just about the exact opposite. He’d made himself out to be a best friend to you, a shoulder to lean on.
It wasn’t like the NTPD staff had really given him the choice of having a girlfriend, they’d actually discouraged it more than anything. He was on an extremely strict schedule, right down to the time he should be in bed every night.
“So you’ve pretty much got it all laid out for you then?” You’d asked him at lunch one day, sitting across from each other and picking at your food.
“What’s that’s supposed to mean?” He laughed, confused.
“I just mean—I don’t know, you’re seventeen years old, Jack. You’re always here or at the rink. I get it and everything, like you’re going to go pro and stuff. I just wonder sometimes if you ever do anything for you, you know?”
Jack’s lips formed a thin line, inhaling deeply as he thought about your words. It wasn’t like he didn’t understand where you were coming from, it was just all he’d ever really known. His parents had him on the ice before he was two years old. He’s eat, slept, and breathed hockey his entire life.
“I do all this for me,” he finally said. “I want this.”
“Come on,” you huffed, teasingly. “You’re telling me you never think about going out and partying? Or like, I don’t know, having a girlfriend?”
His face flushed almost instantaneously, trying to avert his gaze to anything but you. Of course he though about having a girlfriend. He thought about it every time you’d call him after practice to talk about homework. He thought about it each morning when he pulled up in front of your house and you climbed into his passenger seat, laying your hands on his forearm to tell him whatever girl drama you’d found out the night before.
“No, I guess I don’t really think about it much.”
“Bullshit,” you chided. “If that’s true, do you think you have erectile dysfunction or something? Like a hormonal imbalance?”
“What the fuck?” He laughed, nearly spitting out his Gatorade. “No, I definitely don’t have—”
“You’re blushing!” You cut him off, smiling ear-to-ear.
Jack cherished your time together in school; he rarely had a free moment outside of classes that he wasn’t playing hockey. He always felt horrible declining your offers to hang out, but he genuinely couldn’t find a free moment.
A part of him feels this is to blame for your relationship never progressing further. He thought you’d maybe felt something more than platonic feelings for him at one point, but who wants some guy who is too cool for any school functions and can’t see you on weekends because of practice or tournaments. Although, he’d never been honest with you about his feelings either.
It was only a matter of time before you moved forward with your life, leaving him to wonder what could’ve been.
Jack wouldn’t lie and say it didn’t sting every time you’d bring a new guy up, what might’ve taken the cake was when you’d brought one to a hockey game of his. It was like one of those movie moments, Jack thought at practice the next day. He’d seen you in the stands, face lighting up, only to notice the guy beside you with his arm around you.
He wanted to hate the kid, too. Only then did he realize how jealous he truly was. He was heartbroken over a girl he’d never even dated. How was that even possible, Jack would wonder as he stared up at the ceiling in bed.
He could’ve told you, could’ve been honest about how he felt about you. Who knows what would’ve happened, but at least you’d have known. It was too late, he saw how happy you were and had to match your expression with fake smiles and words of encouragement laced with frustration and envy.
Jack tried not to hate himself for how he’d let the situation play out, but he truly couldn’t.
You’d fall in love, and he’d watch. And there was nothing he could do about it.

British Michigan AU Oneshot
Tearful Reunions (Wattpad | Ao3)
America paced worriedly outside the meeting place, anxiety flooding his body and choking his mind, making it hard to think. His emotions were a tangled mess, and America couldn’t figure out if he wanted to scream or cry.
“Preferably, you won’t scream when you see him,” Amelia said in a soothing voice, “We don’t want to scare him off, and who knows what those bastards have been filling his head with. We’ve already—”
Amelia cut herself off, not wanting to mention what Britain had done to their son. It was hard for all of them to think about it, let alone say those dreaded words. America paused, nodding, not wanting to say anything. While he had recently revealed his DID, he was trying not to disturb anyone by talking to the others in public.
Besides, this was one of the most important days of his life. He couldn’t mess it up. Not now, not after everything. Not when he was so close. America had stopped pacing now and was instead wringing his hands together, doing everything he could to dispel the anxious energy that filled his body.
Then, his son arrived. Before he said anything, America just drank in the appearance of his son. Photos and videos online of various events he had attended were one thing, but America hadn’t seen him in person…America had never seen him in person before. Not outside of his inner world, at least. Tears sprung into the corners of his eyes, and a heavy lump settled in his throat.
His son’s flag was so reminiscent of a British colony, with the Union Jack canton that Britain used to claim them as his own. The brand was still visible on his son’s face.
“A flag is not a brand. I know you’re angry at Britain, but you can’t stand acting angry at Michigan. It’s not his fault,” James said.
“No. It’s ours,” Rebecca murmured as the family pang of self-loathing and regret hit America.
The rest of Michigan’s flag was read, with a seal in the corner. A sun over what must be one of the Great Lakes and part of the lakebed, with a dear at the top. The deer’s legs were tied together. America wondered if he was being mocked if Britain created that seal as one final insult, one final blow to him. A reminder that he failed and his son was now forever stuck with his captors.
Michigan had grown into a handsome man with dark hair, brown eyes, and the deer’s ears and antlers.
America still wanted to cry.
“Uh…Hello, America,” Michigan began. America knew that his father had brainwashed his son into hating and disowning him, but being called America hit him with a painful lance that thickened the lump in his throat.
He really was going to cry.
“Hi, Michigan,” America began, his own voice thick with emotion and grief, “It’s so good to see you again.”
Michigan looked somewhat uncomfortable, and America began trying to reel his emotions in, not wanting to scare off his son after so long.
“Sorry if…sorry if I’m a bit emotional or a bit much. It’s…it’s been a long time. I’ve missed you so much,” America said.
“Maybe tell him you aren’t going to pressure him to call you dad. I know you want it, Ame, but it’s not going to happen for a while. Let him know you’ll wait for him to be ready,” Charlotte added. America bit down a bitter laugh.
He had been waiting for his son for almost two hundred years. He didn’t want to wait any longer. But Charlotte was right.
“You also…you don’t have to call me…call me dad, right away. It’s…it’s good enough to see you again,” America added and watched as some of the nervousness drained from his son’s body, sending another bolt of pain through him.
“Thank you,” Michigan said, his voice nearly a whisper, before he cleared his throat, speaking louder, “I don’t know what you want to do or talk about. I…”
Realizing that Michigan had trailed off, America quickly stepped in.
“I just want to get to know you again. I…there’s a nice family restaurant down the road if you want to go there and eat, and just tell me about your life and your interests and all that. I know…I know painfully little about you. You can control the topics. I just…I just want to be in your life again,” America said before swallowing thickly. The words had been hard to say around the lump in his throat, around the storm of emotions running through him.
Michigan smiled, and America was struck by how familiar that smile was—so reminiscent of Indiana and Illinois that it hurt.
A dark part of America wondered if Michigan was ever hurt for those superficial similarities. America shut that part of him down. He would cry about his failures after the fact.
“That sounds nice. But I…I am allowed to leave if I get uncomfortable?” Michigan asked. The pain in America’s heart grew. His son should never have to feel uncomfortable around him. He should feel safe.
America nodded, “Of course you can. I don’t want to mess things up further. Let me, please, let me know if I have crossed a line. I know you aren’t the son I lost, but it’s easier to tell my head that than my heart that.”
“Thank you,” Michigan said. There was something so painfully formal about the way he was acting, like he was meeting an ally, not a long-lost family member. America wondered if his children who had written to Michigan over the past fifty-something years had dealt with a similar phenomenon.
He wondered how long it took for them to get through Michigan’s walls. Because as much as America understood why, and he could understand, he had lived under Britain for two hundred-odd years too, he wanted to know the man his son had become.
He wanted to know who Michigan was now. He knew Michigan’s birthday had been changed to the day Hull surrendered, and he wondered if Michigan remembered his actual birthday. He wondered if Michigan wanted to know.
“Vermont says Canada is a good father, but uh…that’s true, right? He’s good to you? He doesn’t hurt you?” America asked. He knew how Britain’s parenting tactics were, and although Vermont visited the Canadian side of his family often, he was still an outsider, not privy to all details.
“It’s still a terrible first question,” James said, sounding annoyed.
“I don’t know. I think it shows that America still thinks about his well-being and cares about him,” Amelia said.
Michigan looked horrified at the prospect.
“No! Father—” And boy, if that didn’t sting. “—is the best. He treats me and my brothers well! He would never hurt us! Are you trying to make me doubt him?”
Michigan was instantly on the defensive, assuming the worst. It stung worse than him calling Canada father.
“No, no! I just want to make sure you’re safe and loved. I know…I know how Britain is,” America protested, concern and fear flooding through him as Michigan flinched slightly at Britain’s name. “I just…I want you to be happy. I accepted long ago that you would never again be part of my nation. I’ve come to accept that. But to me, you still never stopped being my son. No matter how much you hate me, I still love you. I always will. Canada and I have our issues, but as long as he ensures you’re safe and happy…then I’ll do my best to be as okay as I can with him being your dad. Even if it hurts me, you’re more important.”
It was more honest than what he was used to, but Vermont had drilled into his head that honesty was the best thing to come to Michigan with. Vermont said that if he laid everything out for Michigan, Michigan would be more willing to trust him because he knew where America stood.
“Father ensures that my family is as safe as happy as it can be,” Michigan said, voice firm as he stared America in the eyes. America nodded.
“Good. That’s all I want from him. To know you’ll be safe with him,” America said.
“And weekly visits!” Amelia protested.
“Later, Lia. Not now. It’s not appropriate for that. We need to regain Michigan’s trust in us. Michigan calls the shots.”
Michigan let out a small laugh, and America smiled.
“This isn’t what I expected,” he said, “You’re more okay with everything.”
“I’ve had a lot of time to think. And…because I love you, I have to be willing to let you call the shots.” America said. Michigan smiled.
“That means a lot. Now, I’m hungry, so if it’s okay, can we go to that restaurant you talked about,” he asked. America nodded.
“‘Course we can.”
Maybe things weren’t perfect now, but they were better than they had been.
America got to talk to Michigan again. Very little could be better than that.

USA Hockey's Jack Hughes viewed as future NHL superstar
Published: Oct 2, 2018

It’s not hard spotting Jack Hughes on the ice for USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program.
Just watch the puck. Chances are pretty good 17-year-old Hughes is there, too.
Mesmerizing, quick, nimble and creative are just some of the words that aptly describe Hughes. Scoring machine, workout freak and almost certain top pick in the 2019 National Hockey League Entry Draft are other spot-on characterizations.
“The draft is 10 months away,” said Hughes, a 5-10, 168-pound forward, who opened the 2018-19 season along with his NTDP U-18 teammates with road games Sept. 29-30 in Cranberry, Pa. “All those websites can come out or people can come out with the rankings, but really, none of it really matters until the teams' rankings come out at the draft.
“I’m not too worried about it, I’m just worried about my game and focusing on that. I’m not the only guy on the team with high expectations. I could go pretty high. We got a really good team with a lot of really good players. There’s a lot of good stuff looming with our team.”
Hughes already is displaying traits both on and off the ice that give a strong indication that he’ll be ready whenever he gets the NHL call.
“I haven’t been around anything like this,” NTDP U-18 head coach John Wroblewski said. “Where there’s been pressure for almost a year and a half for him to be the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming (NHL) draft, I’ve never seen anything like it.
“I know the kid hasn’t changed much. He’s still the player and the young man who comes to work. He’s got teenaged tendencies, but he’s also a very impressive young man. If you tell him something, his uptake is so quick and he’ll put it to work. And it’s the same kid that always comes to the NTDP every day.”
And who knows, if the Detroit Red Wings miss the playoffs (as is widely expected), the younger brother of University of Michigan defenseman Quinn Hughes (this summer’s No. 7 pick by Vancouver) could wind up as Detroit’s next cornerstone teenage player — just like then-18-year-old Steve Yzerman was in 1983.
“It’d be cool, of course. Detroit’s a great place to play,” said Hughes, who attends classes at Plymouth-Canton Educational Park. “But it’s the NHL. All 31 teams are unbelievable and, if you got the chance to play for any team, it would be just so special.“
Work comes first
Hughes isn’t getting too far ahead of himself. He knows he has a lot of work to do for the NTDP, including international medals to go after next April in Sweden, when the IIHF U-18 Men’s World Championship takes place. USA Hockey Arena fans will get their first chance to watch him play at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, against the University of Minnesota.
“It’s a big year, of course. It’s fun,” said Hughes, whose parents are Ellen and Jim Hughes of Plymouth. “First of all, it’s our last time playing together with our team. None of us will play together again after this year, so it will be really fun. We’ll make the most of it, for sure.
“With the NHL draft, most of the (U-18) guys are draft-eligible, so it’s a really important year and we’re all really excited about it.”
Hughes isn’t the only budding NHL prospect with the team. He and 17 other NTDP players took part in the recent All-American Prospects Game in St. Paul, Minn. — six of whom are projected top 20 picks in the 2019 NHL draft.
The other top NTDP players include center Alex Turcotte, left wing Cole Caufield (54 goals in 2017-18), defenseman Cam York, left wing Matt Boldy, center Trevor Zegras and defenseman Alex Vlasic.
“Cole’s a special talent, of course,” Hughes said. “Not many guys can come to the program and be able to score goals as well as he can. He’s obviously an unbelievable player and an unbelievable scorer. He’s such a good kid off the ice, too.
“Not only do we click on the ice, but off the ice we’re really good friends, too. I think that helps, for sure.”
Puck finds him
Wroblewski raved about Hughes’ uncanny ability to find open ice and either go top shelf or thread perfect feeds to linemates such as Caufield.
But the coach sees all the intangibles that add up to a future NHL superstar.
“(College and pro scouts) see the guy that flies around the ice. But in games, sometimes the puck is attached to him,” Wroblewski said. “I don’t think that they see how hard he works in a game. The reason the game sometimes looks easy for this guy is he works so hard in practice. He’s got such an unbelievable VO2 (oxygen rate during exercise) and ability to create at the end of shifts, because of what he does in practices.”
Yeah, skating fast is one thing. Of course, Hughes is like any hockey player in that he loves to score goals.
Last year, playing for both the NTDP U-17 and U-18 teams, he tallied 40 goals and a program-record 76 assists in 60 games.
“I’d definitely say scoring a goal,” Hughes said, when asked about which part of the game he gets the most buzz out of excelling at. “If you don’t say scoring a goal, I think you might have a problem, because that’s the name of the game. Score goals.
“Anytime you get to score a goal, it’s definitely something you don’t forget about. You get really excited for it, just like it’s your first goal.”
Just relentless
Yet he is the guy who doesn’t stop in practice drills.
“He loves the drills that involve up and down the sheet that exhaust you to the point of being keeled over,” Wroblewski said. “But he’s always going to jump in line for the next rep. Some guys, not necessarily on this team, who are lesser players, might try to find the line where they can rest in — or go to a line that has a few more guys in it.
“He’ll go right back up in our hardest drills if that line is vacant. He’s a relentless worker.”
The coach was asked whether or not Hughes could be a Wayne Gretzky-like player in the NHL and he smiled. He quickly pointed out how much the league has changed since The Great One hung up his skates in 1999.
“It’s just such a different era,” Wroblewski said. “What I’ll say is, I’ll compare (Hughes) to Gretzky in that he’s got that class. You read the stories about Wayne, how he used to take on all the media requests and handle them with dignity and be able to still perform at a high level ... carry himself as a gentleman and ambassador of the game. I see Jack as the type of kid who can carry on that type of legacy. Respect, charismatic and still humble.
“It’s a different superstar compared to what it was back then. Gretzky was playing a different game than everybody else that was out there. There’s a lot of players who play like Jack. There’s not a lot of players who play exactly like Jack — it’s speed, skill. There’s a lot of people out there that have it, (but) it’s his determination and desire to be the best that separates him from a lot of other guys.”
Family plan
Another plus for Hughes was growing up in a hockey hothouse. It didn’t matter whether they were in Florida, Boston, New Hampshire or Toronto.
“It was unreal,” Hughes said. “With three of us in the house, it was crazy and hectic for my mom, of course. We’d always have friends at the house, (playing) mini sticks, watching hockey, going to the outdoor rink.
“It was always hockey, hockey, hockey for us. It was a really good childhood growing up. The house was really competitive whatever it was, whether it was ping pong or whatever.”
Wroblewski also credited the Hughes family for instilling the winning traits that all three of their sons (next up is 15-year-old bantam phenom Luke) possess in droves. Luke Hughes played last season with the Little Caesars Bantam Major AAA team.
Yet in the case of Quinn and Jack Hughes, they have had to step up to expectations seemingly every step along the way from childhood. They’ve aced every test coming their way. By the time 2019-20 rolls around, both could be playing in the NHL.
“They’re different kids,” Wroblewski said. “I’m sure that (family) support system helps, but they’re very unique. There’s sometimes where you’ll see them in an interview and they appear similar, but they’ve got some dimensions that are different.
“It has a lot to do with how they play on the ice. Jack, his motor is relentless. And Quinn is much more deliberate and he’s able to kind of make people, he baits people in. Where Jack is always going, he’s at high speed a lot during a game.
“It’s a different position (each plays). They just have a different mentality, a different mindset. It shows in their personalities, too. Jack goes and that’s him. Quinn is a lot more calculated and deliberate. They’re both unbelievable kids, teammates and competitors.”
This season, in what might be his final season in Ann Arbor, the older Hughes will try to pick up where he left off last year with the Wolverines.
Stiffer challenge
As far as Jack Hughes is concerned, however, Wroblewski expects opponents in college, international and United States Hockey League play to ratchet it up and really see what the uber-talented prospect is made of.
“It was one thing when he wasn’t under the radar, because of how good he was,” Wroblewski said. “But it wasn’t his draft year. He wasn’t constantly being keyed on. Moving from U-17s to U-18s, there was some differentiation there. But this season, it’s going to be every night, he’s going to have that bull's-eye on his back.
“This is gearing him up for what he wants, to play in the NHL as the No. 1 pick and go on to a lengthy career as a franchise-type player. This is all a learning experience for him.”
It undoubtedly will be a blast, too.
“Just fun, everything’s going on,” Hughes said with a small smile. “It’s what you dream of — having a good game, where everything is just easy and so fluid. You’re kind of just in a zone and locked in on everything else going on around you. You’re kind of in your own bubble.”
From all accounts, the Jack Hughes bubble isn’t about to burst for a long time to come.
#JACK 😭#first in line for the hardest drills#‘he’s such a good kid off the ice too’ about cole. YOU’RE A KID TOO JACK!!#jack hughes#post#ntdp#draft era jhughes

Where to Find Memento Mori (Updated 9/11/2024)
On August 13, two days before 광복절 (Korean National Liberation Day), my debut novel was released. The book is about Korean-American family, and also about Greek mythology, and I promise this combination makes sense in the end. (For those who are curious, I wrote an uncharacteristically personal guest post for Women's Writers, Women's Books on the topic of what inspired me to write a Eurydice and Orpheus retelling about my Korean grandmother.)
It was surreal to go to a store the other day and see it on a table next to Salman Rushdie and other acclaimed writers. After 13 years of this story existing in some form, I'm so excited that this book is finally out—both because it is a beautiful book that I am proud of and that I hope you enjoy, and also because I would love to stop being my own publicist (it is VERY awkward).
So here is an omnibus post of book-related info that I will keep updated and pinned going forward to finally give the memento mori tag a rest. Below the cut, you will find a running list of indie bookstores and public libraries that I know carry my book. (If you have a New York Public Library card and have 5 minutes, I will love you forever if you would email your local branch to ask them to carry my book, thus fulfilling my lifelong dream of living in the NYPL.)

Summer of Love:- Arriving in Michigan
Jack Hughes X F!reader
This is my first ever fanfic so please be kind. If anyone has any requests please do ask.I’m also thinking of making a part two to this. My other fics will be Y/N but for this one I felt she needed a name TW:- Mentions of divorce?
(Not my gif, credits to whoever made this)
To say Mackenzie was nervous would be the biggest understatement, she was shaking with anticipation on her drive to Canton with her sister. Jack and Mackenzie had been dating for 2 years now and even though Mackenzie had met the Hughes family on multiple occasions throughout those 2 years this would be the first time Mackenzie’s sister Skylar would be meeting them.
Mackenzie and Skylar were extremely close having gone through their parents divorce together at a young age, and their dad not really in the picture. Mackenzie and Skylar were really all they had, if the Hughes didn’t like Skylar it was a massive deal breaker for Mackenzie and yet here she was driving to Canton to spend an entire summer with her sister and her boyfriends family. Mackenzie was so caught up in her head that she didn’t realise Skylar was talking to her until she felt a poke to her shoulder.
“What’s the matter with you Kenz?” Skylar asked worriedly, her sister was never this quiet usually you’d have to tell her to be quiet. “Nothing Sky Im just a little nervous for you to meet everyone that’s all .” Kenzie replied. “I’ll be fine Kenzie, if they’re as amazing as you say they are we’ll get on great.” Skylar could visibly see Kenzie relax at that.
“We’re almost there now could you text Jack and let him know we’re about 15 minutes away?” Kenzie asked Skylar. “Yeah of course, what’s your passcode?” Skylar asked. “My birthday” Kenzie replied immediately. After Skylar had typed in the code and messaged Jack informing him of what Kenzie had said they were soon pulling into the drive way. Taking a deep breath Mackenzie went to grab the door handle before Skylar spoke again. “Hey kenz it’s gonna be ok, this summer is gonna be fun I just know it” “thank you Skye I’m glad you decided to come along this year” Kenzie replied before getting out.
Jack and Quinn were standing on the front porch waiting to greet the girls and help them with their bags, once jack saw Mackenzie he ran to greet her having not seen her for a few days as she went back home to get Skylar. As soon as Jack was standing in front of her, Kenzie pulled him into a hug and kissed him quickly before pulling away, much to jacks dismay. Jack then went to greet Skylar as Mackenzie was pulled into another hug by the oldest hughes brother. “Hey Kenzie, how have you been?” Quinn asked her. “I’ve been good Q, exhausted from having to juggle time with Sky and Jack though” Quinn chuckled at that and let go of her. “Yeah Rowdy’s not stopped talking about you and when your getting here”. “When are the other boys getting here?” Kenzie asked noticing the lack of noise coming from the house. “They’re coming later this evening, jack didn’t want to overwhelm you or Skylar with them all” Quinn responded, Kenzie could feel her heart swell at Jack being so thoughtful.
After greeting everyone and introducing Skylar, the boys decided it would be a good idea to play a game of 20 questions to get to know Skylar a little more and that is how Kenzie found herself tucked under jacks arm on the couch with Skylar on the other side of her answering questions she never thought would come up again. To be fair to the boys the questions started out normal, “when’s yours and Mackenzie’s birthday Skylar?” Asked Luke. Skylar replied almost instantly “ Mine is March 27th 2003 and Kenzie’s is June 21st 2001” Quinn asked Kenzie how she got the scar on her forehead, it started from her right temple and ended above her eyebrow, and she replied telling the boys the story of how Skylar pushed her off a boat during a vacation because she wouldn’t share her nerd clusters with her.
When the attention was back on Skylar, Mackenzie relaxed when she realised she didn’t need to worry anymore, Skylar was right they were getting on great, they were having fun but Kenzie was still on edge, she was protective of her sister in the same light that Skylar was protective of her. Kenzie couldn’t help but giggle louder than she anticipated as everyone looked over at her. “What’s funny babe?” Jack asked looking down at her. “Nothing sweets—nothing, I was just thinking back to the first time you met sky!” She replied. Jack groaned as Skylar started giggling as well. Quinn and Luke looked lost watching the scene unfold. “What happened?” Luke asked. Kenzie tried to reply but couldn’t as she kept laughing. Skylar took over instead, “oh my gosh, so when I first heard about jack I was wary of him, kenz’s first boyfriend was a right douche who never treated her right and so after him I vowed to give her next boyfriend a hard time when I first met him, you know get to know what he really wanted with my sister. I wasn’t gonna let another boy break her heart and so when she first brought Jack around i interrogated him for the entire night, I honestly thought he was gonna cry he looked so scared. But I realised he was actually a perfect fit for kenz and I had to tell him the jig was up and I was just messing with him.” Lukes face had turned red as he was trying so hard not to laugh, until he couldn’t hold it in, everyone else followed suit and soon the whole living room was filled with laughter, until the doorbell rang.
Luke, Quinn and Jack looked at each other confused until they heard a familiar voice shout “Yo Hughesy open the door your best buddies are here” Luke bolted it to the door, with everyone else following suit, and there stood on the front porch was the Michigan sophomore boys. Kenzie looked over to Skylar to see her smiling brightly with her nose slightly scrunched, confused Mackenzie tried to see who her sister was looking at and that’s when she realised someone on the Umich hockey team had caught her eye. Would this be the summer everything changed for sky?
AN:- would you guys like a part 2? Who do you want the mysterious Umich boy to be? I’m open to suggestions. Again please be kind this is my first ever fic
Part 2??
