DISABILITA’ E SPORT: all is possible!

L’argomento che tratterò oggi è inerente all’uso della tecnologia nello sport ed entrando nel dettaglio, parlerò delle innovazioni e soprattutto delle grandi possibilità che sono state offerte con l’introduzione delle protesi sportive.

Lo sport è e deve essere accessibile a tutti: sia normodotati che persone con handicap fisici o altri tipi di disabilità. Tutti abbiamo dei diritti e dei doveri nei confronti della società e tra i vari diritti vi è anche quello alla pratica sportiva. Dobbiamo ricordarci , però, che anni fa tutto ciò non era possibile e questo era dovuto principalmente al tipo di tecnologia che si aveva a disposizione. Ovviamente un secolo fa non si poteva parlare dello stesso progresso tecnologico di cui parliamo oggi.

Negli ultimi 50 anni il mondo intero ha cominciato ad investire in diversi progetti aventi come obiettivo l’integrazione delle persone portatrici di handicap. Un esempio è il progetto Leonardo “SPORT PER LE PERSONE DISABILI” dove risulta essere chiaro il bisogno di un’istruzione riguardante la conoscenza basilare dello sport per persone disabili ; sia a livello competitivo che amatoriale. Chiaramente per poter praticare alcuni sport, queste persone hanno bisogno di “piccoli aiuti” e questi possono essere offerti, ad esempio, da protesi e altri presidi ortopedici.

Oggi, possiamo affermare con piena certezza che gli atleti con disabilità fisiche, grazie all'innovazione tecnologica, hanno la possibilità di cimentarsi con successo in quasi tutte le gare sportive, con prestazioni sempre più vicine a quelle degli atleti normodotati. 

Fondamentale è stata l'introduzione di materiali provenienti soprattutto dall'industria aerospaziale, come fibre di carbonio, kevlar, leghe di titanio, leghe di alluminio ad alta resistenza, combinata alla ricerca nel settore della biomeccanica. Ciò ha  permesso di affrontare le  problematiche legate alla disabilità rivoluzionando il mondo dello sport paralimpico. 

Fortunatamente al giorno d’oggi esiste una protesi per lo svolgimento di ogni sport. In base alla tipologia dell’attività sportiva scelta e in base al peso dell’atleta, si scelgono i materiali e il tipo di assemblaggio adeguati. Con le tecnologie attuali è possibile trovare una soluzione per qualsiasi sport: atletica, scherma, sci di fondo, sci alpino, snowboard, sport acquatici, ecc…

Ad esempio, in atletica vi sono le handbike: carrozzine dotate di “pedali a mano” collegati con un sistema a catena alla ruota anteriore. Queste sono utilizzate soprattutto nelle gare di resistenza su strada. Invece, per le gare su pista, vengono utilizzate soprattutto carrozzine a tre ruote, due più grandi posteriori e una anteriore più piccola, dotate anche di un piccolo manubrio che serve a regolare l’angolo di sterzata.

Ovviamente ci sono sport dove servono delle protesi di arti che siano in grado di restituire l’energia prodotta. Il risultato sorprendente è che questo tipo di tecnologia basata sulla fibra di carbonio e su particolari design, restituisce più energia rispetto agli arti di un normodotato (90-95% contro il 60%).

Tra i migliori atleti che utilizzano protesi ricordiamo Alex Zanardi (automobilismo), Oscar Pistorius (atletica) e Beatrice Vio (scherma).

La scienza ed il suo progresso stanno lavorando ancora su questo fronte e probabilmente in un futuro prossimo vi saranno tecnologie ancora più sviluppate che potranno imitare qualsiasi parte del corpo umano. Ormai la concezione di sport è lontana dai canoni di Pierre De Coubertin che seppur sia riuscito a reintrodurre le Olimpiadi facendo gareggiare atleti di diverse nazionalità, era contrario alla partecipazione di donne e persone disabili. Oggi, possiamo affermare, invece, che la parola d'ordine è sicuramente "UGUAGLIANZA" e non "pregiudizio".

We are at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania which is a National Park.  Over by the crash site a quarter mile away from the main Visitor Center is the Memorial wall. Next to this is the giant boulder in the field at the exact spot the United plane crashed. Here was a memorial wreath and quite site commemorating the people that lost their life here preventing the plane…
