Hurray for the Riff Raff & Matthew Santos Live Show Review: 6/22, Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Chicago

Alynda Segarra does it all: storyteller, chanteuse, and, having now seen her live, pop star. Last night at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, she performed all of those roles playing songs mostly off of this year’s excellent The Navigator. From the barroom ditty “Life to Save” to anthem “Hungry Ghost” to the Latin jazz-influenced “Rican Beach”, Segarra and her band showed off their versatility while still finding a way to make some powerful political statements. She introduced “The Navigator” as a “song about someone who can lead us out of this mess,” while one of the band members sported a “We’re all in this together” t-shirt. A woman of Puerto Rican descent, Segarra is an ardent supporter of immigrant rights, and her music supports Puerto Rican culture, beautifully weaving traditional forms of music with folk, blues, and stadium-sized rock.

And while “Pa’lante” is Hurray’s best song--one she declares to be about her identity as a New Yorker--live, the piano drives the climax instead of her voice. So her best song live is perhaps the simplest, her anti-war opus “The Body Electric”. It would have made for a better finale than their fun but minor cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark”. However, even the least interesting Hurray for the Riff Raff songs hold their weight, making the band and Segarra one of the most essential voices in music today.

Opening for Hurray for the Riff Raff was Matthew Santos, probably best known for his collaborations with Lupe Fiasco. Santos’ voice, like on songs like “Superstar”, is soulful, his falsetto providing fodder for ballads and flamenco songs equally. Armed with a talented band consisting of a guitarist, keyboardist, upright bassist, violinist, and drummer, (Santos sometimes played acoustic guitar), he was an effective opener for Hurray for the Riff Raff on his last public show in Chicago as a resident (he’s moving to L.A.). I can’t think of a better farewell than to play one of the best-sounding big stages opening for a great band on its way up.
