Candy Says - The Velvet Underground

I realise in hindsight that this would have been the perfect uomcsp to have released yesterday but I wasn't thinking so I apologise. This may have been a bit rushed as a consequence but Happy (belated) Trans Day of Visibility.

It is hard to come up with the words to describe people sometimes. For me the best word to describe the Velvet Underground is that they were "underground", hence I am taking a quote from their kids version of the Encyclopaedia Britannica; "lyrically, it explored social and sexual deviance, drugs, violence, and despair." Essentially, the perfect combination to add to a sad playlist. I know too few Velvet tracks to properly pick out the saddest of the lot but here are some good examples.

Sunday Morning is the first track of the Velvet's first album. I am not an early riser, I typically get up in the afternoon when possible but every Sunday where I do wake up in the morning, I play the track, though that is arguably the wrong way around. While it has an innocent sound to it from its musical box style sound, it discusses staying up all night into the early hours of Sunday morning. In it, the speaker discusses their anxieties and regrets of what they did and how they feel like they are wasting time, resulting in the innocent sound being more hollow.

After Hours is quite a similar in nature to Sunday Morning, with the song about a person spending their nights in clubs but finding themselves alone after all of it. The song was made with a child like innocence with the singing handled by Moe Tucker, the drummer. The cute vibes of the song contradict the loneliness discussed in the song.

I'm Waiting for the Man is standing on the corner waiting for the drug dealer. It isn't sad in the conventional sense but considering that the heroin addict is "lookin' for a dear, dear friend", shows that they are so desperate for heroin that the dealer looks like a friend, even though the dealer doesn't care for them.

Candy Says however has come out on top for the Velvet's saddest track. The Candy in the track's title is about Candy Darling, a transgender actress they knew. The song generally was about being depressed, though the opening itself establishes this is from dysphoria as "Candy says 'I've come to hate my body'".
