The Culkin Brothers: Macaulay Culkin became a sensation in the 1990's for his portrayal of Kevin McCallister in the Home Alone movies. His brothers Kieran and Rory are also actors, and they feature in some of my favourite productions from that era.

Home Alone, directed by Chris Columbus, 1990

A movie I love to watch every Christmas vacation and never get tired of. With Macaulay Culkin as the lead, but also Kieran Culkin as Kevin's bed-wetting cousin Fuller. Also starring beloved Canadian comedians Catherine O'Hara and the late John Candy. Wonderful soundtrack by John Williams.

The Mighty, directed by Peter Chelsom, 1998 Based on the novel Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, this underrated gem is funny, uplifting and heart-breaking all at once. Kieran Culkin plays a gifted teenage boy living with Morquio syndrome. He befriends a strong yet learning disabled boy who becomes his legs while he becomes his brain. Another movie I love to watch around Christmas since an important part of the story is set at that time of year. Hilarious performance by Gillian Anderson as "the Queen of Saxony". Set in Cincinnati but filmed in Toronto. Amazing Celtic-tinged score by Trevor Jones.

Signs, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, 2002 I include this film even though it was released in 2002. It is close enough to the 90's and the story was conceived in a pre-9/11 context. The technologies used by the characters are still those of the 90's (VHS tapes, cathodic televisions, baby monitors) and the fashion as well (Rory Culkin's character rocks the denim overalls and plaid shirts like a pro). This movie is dear to me because of its raw depiction of a man's faith struggle and its effects on his family. But it also offers a wonderful message about God's sovereignty.

On June 24, 1987, the iconic Mel Brooks Star Wars parody Space Balls was released. It also riffed on other sci fi classics like Alien and 2001 A Space Odyssey as well as poked lots of fun about all the marketing products around the Star Wars films. It is said that George Lucas gave his blessing as long as the main character didn't look like Harrison Ford's Han Solo character. To get around this, the main character looked liked Harrison Ford's other George Lucas character Indiana Jones. ("Space Balls" Film, Event)

Spaceballs (1987)

Spaceballs has a few laser battles with rapid fire and sparks on impact. There are a few moments of TV static, most of which happen in sudden split-second bursts. Several sci-fi decorations use blinking lights in the background.

All of the camera motion in this film is either stationary or very smooth.

Flashing Lights: 6/10. Motion Sickness: 1/10.

TRIGGER WARNING: One character’s name is a euphemism for vomit, and there are a couple of jokes about it.

NOTE: This evaluation is posted on May 4, commonly accepted as Star Wars Day, as this film is a vital part of Star Wars culture.

Maze!

Initially it was meant to just be a placeholder name until I figured out if I wanted her to have a pact with Solomon or not (her name is Marchosias, so they do have one lol), but a friend and I grew so attached to calling her 'Maze' that I just made it her nickname

That question is so funny, it makes it sound like she has left my mind even once :)

No, but in all seriousness, I think about her......a little too much maybe lol. Plus every once in a while I have weeks where I just debate how I want to do a certain aspect of her character, backstory and so on. The first thing I struggled with was giving her a proper name, because I wasn't too sure if I wanted her to have a pact with Solomon at first. And once I finally settled on letting her have one, I suddenly had to figure out how to handle Marchosias being described as a fallen angel in demonology when I originally wanted her to be demon-born

The funny thing is, I already started thinking about her way before I even decided to turn her into an OC because of @today-in-the-devildom. I always kind of headcanoned that the blog actually exists in-universe (which is why I at some point slightly rebranded it to be part of RAD's Newspaper Club), and while writing more and more entires I started to shape the personality of the writer who--surprise--is now her!
