Bake House

A bake house is a building for baking bread. The term may be used interchangeably with the term "Bakery", although the latter commonly includes both production and detailed areas.

Historically there have been many types of bake houses in the backyards of homesteads used by residents of a village or a town. Some of them used to be nothing but a huge oven called a oven house.

Tandoor

A Tandoor is a large vase-shaped oven usually made of clay. Tandoors have been used to bake unleavened flat breads such as roti and naan, as well as to roast meat. The tandoor is predominantly used in Western Asian, Central Asian, South Asian and African Cuisines.

The roots of the tandoor can be traced back over 5000 years to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization one of the oldest known civilization. The standard heating element of a tandoor is an internal charcoal or wood fire, which cooks food with direct heat and smoke.

Tandoors can be fully above ground or partially buried below ground. Temperatures in a tandoor can reach 480 Degrees centigrade and they are routinely kept lit for extended periods.

Traditional tandoors are usually found in restaurant kitchens. Modern tandoors are often made of metal. Variations such as tandoors with gas for electric heating elements are more common for at home use. The English word comes from the Hindustani "Tandur" which came from Persian "Tanur" which consists of Mud and Fire.

Operation

The first time a tandoor is used, the temperature must be gradually increased to condition the oven's interior. This step is crucial in ensuring the longevity of the tandoor. Conditioning can be done by starting a very small fire and slowly adding fuel to increase the amount of heat inside the tandoor gradually.

Hairline cracks might form during conditioning this is normal and will not interfere with the performance of the tandoor oven. When the oven cools off, the hairline cracks will barely be noticeable.

There are essential in allowing the clay body of the tandoor to breath (Thermal Expansion and Contraction). The slower the temperature inside the tandoor increases during its first use, the fewer hairline cracks will develop.

Afghan tandoor sits above the ground and is made of bricks. Punjabi tandoor from South Asian is traditionally made of clay and is a well shaped oven which can either be set into the earth or rest above the ground and is fired with wood or charcoal.

Dishes

Used to bake many different types of flat bread. Some of the most common are tandoori roti, tandoori naan, tandoori laccha, paratha, missi roti, kulcha.

Tandoori Chicken is a roasted delicacy that originated in Punjab. Chicken tikka is dish from Mughlai Cuisines that originated in Punjab. Tangadi Kabbab a popular snack in cuisine is from the Indian sub continent.

Samosa is stuffed snack with a savory filling, which may include spice potatoes, onions, peas, coriander and lentils or ground lamb or chicken. Samosas are typically baked in a tandoor while they are usually fried elsewhere.

To operate a commercial tandoor with safety, it is critical to verify that the equipment satisfies the necessary safety and quality standards. Several certifications are important in ensuring the dependability and compliance of commercial tandoors.

Historical Facts About Two African Countries

Hidden Truth Behind Madagascar

If you’ve watched any kind of documentary, or show, or incredibly accurate cartoon depiction of “Madagascar” I’m sure you are fully aware of how unique and distinct the country is when it comes to nature. The Malagasy have quite a unique story too when it comes to the history of the people. The people of Madagascar had trade agreements with the rest of the continent of Africa during the pre-colonial times, most of their trade was with people in modern-day Mozambique, this marina rulers of Madagascar welcomed the English missionaries and soon the island had converted to the Christian faith. 

This conversion to Christianity led to the modernization of Madagascar society which led to the development of schools, medical center, and industries, the Malagasy people believed that their embrace of Christianity and modernity would save them from colonialism but unfortunately, these Africans did not understand that this arm of Christianity was into empire building and not in the sole business. Fast-forward to 1884 the French army launched their attack on the Malagasy people to expand the French empire but the Malagasy people fought a good fight and the war ended in a stalemate. However, in 1895 the French came back twice as tall to burn the country down which utterly destroyed the nearest marina rulership and the wolf of French colonialism was established in place across the island. The French war brought devastation as they mutated the resources and they did not invest in infrastructural development and only split resources out to France. The Malagasy who had strived to stay independent were now French citizens or French subjects until the 1960s when they eventually won their political independence.

Evil Queen of Madagascar

Queen Ranavalona, the Mad Queen of Madagascar was responsible for the killing of 75 percent of her subjects. Whenever she questioned the loyalty of her members of the Madagascar military, she arranged a “fair” and “just” way to allow them to prove their loyalty, by simply telling them to eat three raw chicken skins, no trial, no evidence, no jury, they just have to eat three raw chicken skins to prove their loyalty to the Queen and they will be free to go. After wolfing down the first skin, followed by the second, and finally after a few nauseous gulps, the last, the raw skins slide down their throat covered in slime and they get the urge to vomit. They can’t help it and vomit two of the chicken skins and fail her test and are then pronounced guilty and sentenced to death by the Queen. A strict traditionalist, Queen Ranavalona believed in the old ways of her people and for her accession ceremony had her naked body anointed with the blood of a freshly slain bull, which was fitting for a woman who would spill the blood of millions. After which, she put the royal family to death in a variety of ways. She was responsible for the murder of several Christians, who were sometimes hung over a ravine or cliff’s edge with ropes, and left there without food and water, while their friends and family would be forced to watch until at last the ropes frayed and sent the condemned to their quick death on the rocks below.

Incredible Facts about Madagascar

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, almost one in ten Malagasies smoke weed, which’s a higher percentage than they do in the Netherlands, making it an ideal place (to avoid) when looking for a good vacation.

The North-Eastern part of Madagascar is known to produce close to 80% of the world’s vanilla, which is one of the most expensive flavours. A kind of large wrap made of various kinds of fabrics in patterns and colours usually worn by the Malagasy people.

The behaviour of the Malagasy people is seriously governed by thousands of cultural taboos, or fady, many of which include no funerals or farming on Tuesdays, no use of shovels with firm handles to bury the dead, or no eating of eels and goats.

It has become one of the most recent countries to abolish capital punishment but surprisingly is still the 14th least happy country according to the World Happiness Report.

Despite the poverty, Madagascar is home to some top-notch luxurious tourist sites and spas. Start saving up though, doubles cost from £3,220 a night.

Lamba is a traditional garment worn by Malagasies, both men and women. 

Bare-knuckle fighting, called moraingy, is a very popular sport throughout the island, as well as in Reunion, 300 miles to the east.

 TANZANIA; BEYOND TANGA IN THE LAND OF THE BLACKS

Tanzania, a well-known East African country, home to the tallest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, was formed in 1964 as Tanganyika united with Zanzibar to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, then after 6 months, it was changed to Tanzania. But before we take a journey about Tanzania let’s talk a bit about Tanganyika and Zanzibar.

Tanganyika, a geographical entity that comprises a large part of the mainland of Tanzania was a sovereign state from 1961 to 1964. During the 1880s, the German colonists took over the area and in 1891 was declared a protectorate as part of German East Africa. After World-War I, Britain took over the protectorate and gave it the name Tanganyika under the league-of nations mandate in 1922 which means “what is beyond Tanga”, later it was turned into a United Nations Trust Territory after World War II due to its wonderful qualities in its geography, topography, climate, geopolitics, etc. Interesting to note, Tanganyika was instrumental in World war II as 100, 000 People joined the Allied Forces (Countries that opposed the Axis powers during world war II) and also were part of the 375,000 British colonial troops who fought against Germany and Japan. In 1957, there only 15 towns with over 5000 inhabitants with the former capital of Tanzania having the highest population at the time of more than 125,000 people. During this time, the British had a problem which was the Tanganyika’s ethnic and economic makeup which created issues for them in as much they had a policy which was focused on the continuation of the European presence but they still had to be responsive to the political demands of the Africans there. On route to independence, five UN missions visited the country and received hundreds of written petitions as well as oral presentations made in New York City. All these as the Africans who used the UN to achieve their purposes were key in driving the country towards independence. And in 1961, Tanganyika became an independent state. Now to our neighbor, Zanzibar

Zanzibar, an island located in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa. Interesting to note Zanzibar means land of the blacks. Going as far back as the 16th century, the island was under the domination of the Portuguese but was taken over by Omani Arabs in the 18th century. After taking over, Sultan Seyyid decided to move his capital from Muscat (which is the most populated and popular city in Oman) to Zanzibar. This decision made the island to be at the center of trade for spices. Did you know that in the early 20th century, the island produced nearly 90% of the world’s supply of Spices. Also, the island became a major transit point for the slave trade in the Indian Ocean. But as you know, “When men have ambition, with no limit, they fall”, this is exactly what happened to the Oman Empire, in 1890, the island became a British protectorate. Although it was a British Protectorate, the British ruled through the sultan. Zanzibar, on the path to independence, got theirs from the United Kingdom in 1963, making the nation to be a Constitutional monarchy ruled by its Sultan. Then in 1964, there was a revolt against the sultan, and a new government was formed with Abeid Karume, who was the president and chairman of the Revolutionary Council. During the few days of revolt known as the Zanzibar Revolution, thousands of people lost their lives, comprising mostly Arabs and Indians. Also during this time, the Tanganyika army took part in the revolt then Julius Kambarage Nyerere who was a Tanzanian anti-colonial activist asked Britain to send troops. The troops came ashore from aircraft carriers. The troops’ operations were successful in the disbanding of the military, after the whole operation, the Britain troops left and were replaced with Canadian troops. After some time, on 26th April 1964 Zanzibar united with Tanganyika to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar which is also Tanzania.

Now that we have a clearer view of Tanzania, we can have a touch of its history. After the union of the two states, the two ruling parties in each state merged to form the Chama cha Mapinduzi Revolutionary Party in 1977. The merge occurred due to the belief of Nyerere which was that, multiple political parties, in a nation with diverse or multiple ethnic groups won’t support national unity but will jeopardize it. Also, to promote unity he established Kiswahili as the national language. As time went by, every sector of the state expanded rapidly and nationalizations transformed the government into the largest employer in the country as it was involved in all aspects from retailing to trade to banking thereby making the stage set for corruption. As more complex bureaucratic procedures evolved and a huge increase in tax rates set by officials caused harm to the economy, enormous amounts of public funds were misappropriated and put to ineffective use and the purchasing power continued to decline at a fast rate which all lead to a decline in the economy.

On 19th March 2021, following the sudden death of John Magufuli, Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan became the new president. Still, being the Unitary Presidential Democratic Republic, Tanzania hopes to progress in the oneness of people, in heart and mind.

plague: what events or time periods in history most interest you?

Aaaaaah you know me, I have so many! I’m not an expert in history AT ALL but here’s my faves (it’s not a real top, more like a list) :

1) Medieval Japan (Kamakura period until Edo era, yeah this one isn’t medieval but I add it too because it follows the medieval era)

2) Victorian era, since a long time, but not only for the fancy parts of course

3) Golden Age of Piracyyyyyyyyyyyy all the way

4) Celts

5) Vikings and scandinavian history in general (i don’t know that much, it’s pretty new)

6) Ancient Egypt

7) I really reaaaaaally want to know more about history of Pacific Islanders! I find their cultures very interesting but I know nothing about their history, I want to know more.

8) Native americans history (again, I don’t know much and what I know is mostly the Canadian part but i’m still very interested)

9) History of science!!!!! I love learning about how science evolved, the discoveries, how they were made and all!!!! It might be my favourite, actually.

But I really love history in general, it’s difficult to do a real list because I love learning little bits of history. Plus there’s a lot of stuff I don’t know (I know very little about African History for example, especially since it’s a very big continent i don’t know where to start). I’m really willing to learn about... everything lol, because I’m a big big history nerd even if i’m not an expert!

Cinnamon when it comes to sweet stuff! And for salty recipes, my two faves are thyme and basilic, I love it soooooo so much!

I answered this one already but I’m gonna say it again: The Alps! It feels like peace incarnate for me. It’s not only beautiful for the view, it’s... everything. I always wanted to live in mountains since i’m a little girl, and the Alps are the most beautiful ones to me.

The end of 2017 is rapidly approaching so let’s share some of the good things we discovered about silent films this year.

I reviewed seventy-four silent films in 2017 bringing my total to 374 individual reviews. This is eleven more films than I reviewed in 2016, so I’m pretty happy about that. I also was generally happier with my selections this year than I was last year, as the length of my “favorites” list will probably indicate.

Favorite Silent Films

These are the silent films that I enjoyed the most AND reviewed in 2017. Some were new to me, some were not. They are listed in order of when the review was published. To read my review of the film, click on the title.

Aelita (1924)

Profoundly, gloriously strange and with science fiction design to kill for, Aelita is a mashup of a modern story and a Martian one.

Tiger Rose (1923)

This Canadian-set romance is such a blast thanks to its snappy pace, charismatic cast and on-location photography.

The Flying Ace (1926)

The only complete surviving Richard Norman feature film is also a ton of fun in the pulpy action tradition. Don’t miss it.

Blue Beard (1901)

Melies goes dark in this nightmarish fairy tale and I personally can’t get enough.

The Big Swallow (1901)

Closeups and cannibalism add spice to this imaginative British comedy short.

The Smiling Madame Beudet (1922)

Brilliant examination of a talented woman trapped in a marriage to a buffoon and the extreme measures she is driven to.

The Nose (1963)

Pinscreen animated version of Gogol’s gloriously strange short story, absolutely delightful.

Rescued by Rover (1905)

One of the first genius dog pictures, this film benefits from its charismatic canine star and its real English scenery.

South (1919)

Real footage from Ernest Shackleton’s attempt to cross the South Pole and his heroic efforts to bring his crew back alive.

Crazy Like a Fox (1926)

This has long been my favorite Charley Chase short, it’s laugh-out-loud funny in the splendid Hal Roach style.

Falling Leaves (1912)

Alice Guy’s lyrical film about a child dealing with her sister’s illness. Have your hankies ready.

Sold at Auction (1923)

Snub Pollard is a delight in this strange little comedy about an auctioneer’s assistant who sells the contents of the wrong house.

Habeas Corpus (1928)

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy go dark when they decide to become grave robbers. Great stuff!

The Black Pirate (1926)

Douglas Fairbanks tackled color and piracy and ended up with a mammoth hit. The film plays just as well to modern viewers.

The Last Warning (1929)

Paul Leni’s brilliant direction turns this murder mystery into an event. The perfect merging of German and American film.

Three Million Dollars (1911)

An amiable western rom-com shot outside San Diego, this film is a featherweight delight.

Straight Shooting (1917)

John Ford’s first feature includes plenty of, well, shooting and some lovely glowering from Harry Carey.

Limite (1931)

This independent Brazilian picture has been praised as one of the greatest movies ever made. All that praise is deserved.

Skinner’s Dress Suit (1926)

This examination of 1920s consumerism is all heart and sweetness. Reginald Denny and Laura La Plante are simply divine.

The Strong Man (1926)

  Best Actress

Even though the serial itself is not my favorite, I have to give top honors to Musidora in Les Vampires. She thoroughly steals the show as the treacherous Irma Vep, which is not easy to do in a six hour plus movie.

Honorable Mention: Laura La Plante in Skinner’s Dress Suit, Clara Bow in IT, Germaine Dermoz in The Smiling Madame Beudet, Gertrude Astor in The Strong Man.

Best Actor

Harry Langdon’s performance in The Strong Man is a master class in comedy. He charms, tickles our funnybones and tugs at our heartstrings. Such layering deserves recognition.

Honorable Mention: Reginald Denny in Skinner’s Dress Suit, Harry Carey in Straight Shooting, Carlos Villatoro in The Ghost Train, Raymond Griffith in You’d Be Surprised and Hands Up, Paul Robeson in Body and Soul, Forrest Stanley in Tiger Rose.

Best Director

I went back and forth between Paul Leni (The Last Warning) and Mario Peixoto (Limite) and simply could not come to a decision. Therefore, these two worthy gentlemen share the best director honor for the year. Both created stylish and thrilling films, one from within the Hollywood system and the other as a total independent. Both accomplishments deserve celebration.

Honorable Mention: Frank Capra for The Strong Man, Germaine Dulac for The Smiling Madame Beudet, Alice Guy for Falling Leaves, Yakov Protazanov for Aelita.

Favorite Groundbreakers

Claws of Gold is not shy.

The filmmakers of Latin America. The sheer determination of these independent filmmakers is impressive and their imaginative, daring films continue to enchant audiences. From the confident artistry of Limite to the bold political stance of Claws of Gold, Latin American silent films are a treasure trove for any film buff.

We must also tip our hats to Oscar Micheaux, who created a film career for himself with determination and a lot of hard work. His films continue to astonish audiences and give us the perspective of a black American filmmaker during a time when mainstream Hollywood was completely ignoring African-American voices. (Not that Hollywood gets any prizes on that front in the modern era either.) I reviewed Body and Soul.

Honorable mention must also go to Cecil Hepworth for Rescued by Rover, an early international blockbuster and a great example of the charm of British silent film.

Why I Wanna Go: New Orleans

Hello all! Welcome to the first post of my “Why I Wanna Go Series.” Today, we’ll be talking about my long unfulfilled desire of visiting New Orleans.

Okay, about that long unfulfilled part: New Orleans is a place with which I’ve had a longstanding, obsessive interest that dates all the way back to when I was a child. I used to watch any and every show about it, both fictional and non-fictional. I would check out travel guidebooks and history books about the place from the library for fun.  I’d stay up all night reading the innumerable ghost stories only to lose sleep anyway. I’ve attempted to make various creole and cajun dishes such as gumbo and red beans and rice only to fail miserably (though I have made some very good jambalaya before). I even celebrate Mardi Gras in my own special way, despite living in a place where it traditionally isn’t. 

As you can see, yes, I am obsessed with New Orleans. 

New Orleans is quite the oddball of a town. There’s not really anywhere else within the United States that’s quite like it. It’s unique culture, cuisine and architecture come as a result of it’s historical background, which has led to an end result akin to a, well, gumbo if you will (pun intended, of course): 

Start with a base of French colonist roux and enslaved West African stock, strongly flavored with the essence of indigenous tribes of the Southeast Woodlands (such as Chitimacha, Choctaw and Houma Indians). Bring this mixture to a boil before adding Spanish sausage, some chicken from the farms of exiled French Canadians (i.e. Cajuns) and shrimp from the Canary Islands. Next, stir in some American file powder for thickening purposes. Toss in some Sicilian bell peppers, Irish onions and German celery. Lastly, top it all off with some Haitian okra, and just a dash of Vietnamese, Filipino, Cuban and Honduran spices and wallah! You have just successfully crafted the cultural melting pot for New Orleans. 

Now, New Orleans most certainly isn’t the only American city with a culture strongly influenced by a number of different groups. There’s NYC with the Italian, Ashkenazi Jewish, Puerto Rican and West Indian flavors. The cultures of Californian cities and/or regions are profoundly inspired by longstanding communities of Mexicans, Black Americans and various Asian, Pacific Islander and Middle Eastern groups. And then you have Miami/South Florida which is essentially the U.S.A.’s mecca of any and everything Latino and Caribbean. 

However, it usually comes with a limit. Regardless of the influence, at the end of the day, everyone more or less goes back to doing their own thing. It’s rare for things to meld and merge together as seamlessly as they have in New Orleans. That factor alone makes it more akin to cities in the Caribbean. In addition to it’s architecture, it’s climate, oh, and the fact that it play hosts to Carnival; which, in this context is known as Mardi Gras. 

Ah yes, Fat Tuesday. Originally a Catholic celebration in which people gorged on as much rich and fatty food as possible (well, the name of it came from somewhere) before Lent; in the case of New Orleans, it has since morphed into a gathering of vice and debauchery that attracts visitors from all over the world. As everyone dons a mask, watching the elaborately wacky floats pass by as numerous women flash their, ahem, assets to get beads from the krewe, this also leads to uncontrollable crowds, quite a few fights and jacked up prices for EVERYTHING.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love to see Mardi Gras for myself one day....just not on the first trip. Nor would I want my first trip to be during the Essence Music Festival. Or the Jazz Fest. Or the Voodoo Experience. I guess I feel like if I have to spend my entire time dealing with excessive crowds and the collateral damage that comes with that (see: more traffic, higher airfare, hotel rooms being priced through the roof, etc....) it would compromise my experience. Might be a Vegas thing. 

Okay, okay, enough tangents. Are we here to talk about why I wanna go to New Orleans or not?

Reason number one: All of that delicious FOOD. 

You got gumbo, jambalaya, red beans and rice, beignets, etouffee, po’ boys, crawfish and just SO much more. A cultural background influenced by various sources, a zeal for spice, an abundant array of plants, seafood and wild game in the area and a populace that takes it VERY seriously can lead to quite the engaging culinary experience I would imagine. 

Reason number two: The nightlife. 

Ah, where to begin. I mean, there does appear to be a little bit of something for everyone there. Touristy bars on and around Bourbon Street serving up Hurricanes and Hand Grenades in souvenir cups, many of which with an interesting history all their own (see: Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop, an alleged business cover-up for the pirate Jean Lafitte, said to be haunted by his spirit to this day). Classy cocktail lounges in the Garden District where you can sip on a $14 dollar Sazerac while listening to smooth jazz. More eclectic nightspots on the fringes of the French Quarter with a mix of tourists and locals. Energetic venues playing a wide variety of music in Marigny. Oh, and the strip club circuit doesn’t look like anything to sneeze at either. The options are truly endless.

Reason number three: The history.

As already stated above, New Orleans wouldn’t be what it is today without it’s history. Between the numerous cultures and ethnic groups that have added to it’s modern-day melting pot (to the point that the city has several different accents going on, most of which sound closer to NYC/Jersey and/or Caribbean accents than they do Southern or Cajun), the French and Spanish Colonial architecture only to be accented by numerous other styles of architecture over the years, lingering signs of the Antebellum era, an uncanny connection to the afterlife involving above-ground tombs and hauntings all over the place, an unusual religious history as far as American cities go (I mean, it’s a predominantly Catholic city in a sea Southern Baptists with strong followings for Voodoo, Hoodoo and other syncretic, magical and/or pagan belief systems as well) and, lastly.........the beast known as Katrina and the city’s unwavering resilience to press on afterward. New Orleans tells a story unlike any other, and I for one am quite excited to explore the pages. 

Reason number four: The music.

American popular music as we know it today would not exist without New Orleans. Period. Pop? Rock? R&B? Hip Hop? EDM? All of this can be traced back to Jazz. New Orleans is both the birthplace, and still remains as a vital source of Jazz music today. It’s also the arguable birthplace of R&B as well, which gave way to Rock and Roll. Now, while New Orleans may not have been involved in the creation of hip hop, it does have a distinct hip hop sound of its own (see: Juvenile, early Lil’ Wayne, Master P), in addition to Bounce music, a sort of hip hop/electronic hybrid genre (see: Big Freedia, or “Formation” by Beyonce). Because of this, just like with nightlife, New Orleans offers a little bit of something for everyone in regards to music. Be it Jazz, Blues, Rock, R&B, Hip Hop, the aforementioned Bounce, Latin (I mean, a lot of early Jazz and R&B did borrow from Cuban music conventions so), Funk, or even Zydeco, if you want it, New Orleans has it. They probably just put their own little spin on it, is all. 

Reason number five: The surroundings. 

New Orleans has a location that’s perfect for side trips. You can take a bus to historical plantations like Myrtles and Oak Alley. Explore the gator-infested bayous. Check out Cajun Country. Ride a steamboat down the Mississippi. Towns like Lafayette, New Iberia and Baton Rouge with interesting stories of their own. And several other options for those who feel adventurous and wish to venture out of the city. 

My Dream Itinerary:

Sights: The French Quarter, Bourbon Street, Jackson Square, The Garden District, Congo Square, Treme, St. Louis Cemetery #1, St. Louis Cathedral and City Park. 

Attractions: The Cabildo, The Presbytere, Beauregard-Keyes House, 1850 House, Backstreet Museum, Pharmacy Museum, Old Ursuline Convent, Histroic New Orleans Collection, Old U.S. Mint, Mardi Gras World, Lower Ninth Ward Museum, Civil War Museum and The Voodoo Museum

Dining: Cafe du Monde for Beignets and Cafe au Lait, ACME Oyster House for Seafood dishes, Muriel’s, Pierre Masperos, Praline Connection or the Gumbo Shop for the iconic Creole dishes, Central Grocery for the Muffuletta, Johnny’s Po’Boys for Po��Boy sandwiches and Hansen’s or Piety for Snowballs. 

Nightlife: Mostly Bourbon Street and the rest of the French Quarter, although Frenchmen St. in Faubourg Marigny and the Warehouse District also catch my interest.

Shopping: The French Market, Riverwalk Marketplace and Magazine Street in Uptown/The Garden District.

Experiences: Ghost Tours, Cemetery Tours, Voodoo shops, Psychic shops and riding the streetcars and ferries.

Exploration: The French Quarter, Faubourg Marigny, Treme, The CBD, Warehouse District, Uptown and The Garden District.

Sidetrips: A bus trip to either Oak Alley, San Francisco or Myrtles plantation(s), Avery Island and Lafayette/Cajun Country. Maybe the bayou tour too if I can suck up the phobias I have of insects, gators and potentially encountering the types of people you see in movies like Deliverance. 

Oh New Orleans. How I long for the day where I can walk your streets.

Of course, flight times to anywhere in the Caribbean are shorter from the South and east coast in the United States. Most flights from the west coast or the Midwest will likely require a layover. All major cruise lines offer sailings with Jamaica and Dominican Republic port calls (though these may be too brief to really get a feel for either place). Both destinations require a valid passport for entry. Visas are not required for U.S. and Canadian citizens in Jamaica, but visitors to the Dominican Republic are charged a $10 arrival tax, rolled into the airline ticket cost.

Jamaica: There are three international airports in Jamaica: Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, Norman Manley International Airport in the capital city of Kingston, and (for smaller aircrafts) the Ian Fleming International Airport in Ocho Rios. Getting to Negril or Ocho Rios requires a two-hour taxi or shuttle ride from Montego Bay. Visitors can rent a car, but driving on the opposite side of the road may be too confusing for some and GPS systems don’t work well. There’s also very little public transportation on the island, so non-metered taxis are the most popular way to get around. Haggling for the rate is expected and visitors should always follow common sense safety tips.

Dominican Republic: Approximately six million people visit the Dominican Republic every year, and most of them arrive by air at one of the three international airports. Punta Cana International Airport sees the most visits, and it’s a privately owned commercial airport. Roads can be narrow and poorly paved, but the D.R. does have an inexpensive bus service that covers much of the country. Another option is to hire a guagua (pronounced wawa), an informal taxi network with vehicles that range from old vans to nice minibuses. These get packed with tourists and locals hitching a cheap ride. Note that tourists are usually charged much more than locals, so it’s smart to agree on a rate beforehand. Taxis are also available, but this option is super pricey.

All-Inclusive Resorts and Boutique Hotels in Jamaica and the Dominican Republic

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana/Oyster

Tourism makes up a giant percentage of both Caribbean nations’ economies, so it’s no surprise that both destinations have seemingly endless hotel options from which to choose. Whether you want a cheap all-inclusive beach hotel or designer boutique digs with privacy and butler service, you can find all levels of luxury and budget in both destinations. That said, we do think that Jamaica has a slight leg up in terms of overall quality — especially for mid-range resorts.

Jamaica: The island is one of the all-inclusive capitals of the world, and one of the first Caribbean islands to introduce the leave-your-wallet-at-home (don’t really do that) concept to attract tourists who were tired of paying a la carte prices and hidden fees. All-inclusive resorts are especially popular around Montego Bay. The adults-only Secrets Wild Orchid Montego Bay offers 10 restaurants, eight bars, and free dance lessons on the beach. Negril is still home to cozy and rustic boutique properties with lower rates. Negril Tree House Resort is right on famous Seven Mile Beach, and provides free breakfast and yoga classes.

Dominican Republic: Punta Cana is the epicenter for tourism in the country, so it’s no surprise that the biggest hotel names are clustered together on the long stretches of white sandy beaches that make the area a favorite for family vacations, party-seekers, and honeymoons. One of the top contenders is the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana, a massive all-inclusive resort with something for everyone: a large casino, 13 pools, 13 restaurants, waterslides, beach access, and an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus golf course. For something more intimate, Tortuga Bay Hotel Puntacana Resort & Club has just 13 rooms designed by Oscar de la Renta. To get away from Punta Cana’s tourist scene, Natura Cabana Boutique Hotel & Spa is a six-hour drive north and offers eco-friendly bungalows, an excellent spa, and a quiet beach.

Food and Drinks in Jamaica and the Dominican Republic

It would be entirely possible to visit either country and subsist completely off of American chain fare: McDonald’s, Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, TGI Friday’s, Applebee’s, and Burger King are just a few of the Western restaurants that cater to homesick (or maybe just picky) Americans. But it would be a giant mistake to miss out on the local food scenes in Dominican Republic and Jamaica.

Jamaica: One of the best parts of eating in Jamaica is how pervasive and affordable the local cuisine is. Casual jerk shops (jerk is shorthand for a spicy marinade rubbed on meats) line the roads and beaches. The menu usually consists of the aforementioned jerk meats, like chicken or fish, smoked over pimento wood and served with rice, beans, and plantains. Scotch bonnet peppers add serious heat, so be forewarned. Other easily accessible gourmet items include Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, sweet sapodilla fruit, and coconut water. The island’s history as an English colony means that tea is still regularly served in the late afternoons. Red Stripe is one of the most popular Jamaican beers.

Dominican Republic: Dominican dishes combine African, Spanish, and Taíno (indigenous people living in Cuba, Trinidad, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico) food flavors, using ingredients that are easily accessible in the Caribbean. Dominican staples to try include mangú, made from boiled, green plantains that are mashed and topped with sauteed red onions; fried plantains called tostones; and rice cooked with black or red kidney beans. Passion fruit juice, glass bottles of Refresco Country Club soda, and strong coffee with lots of sugar are favorite beverages. For the truly adventurous, have a slow shot of mamajuana, a homemade liquor made with rum, red wine, tree bark, spices, and herbs — it’s considered an aphrodisiac.

Apart from the obvious plethora of beach activities — swimming, paddleboarding, parasailing, and catamaran cruises — both Jamaica and the Dominican Republic offer tons for tourists to see and do. Most all-inclusive resorts put on some sort of evening entertainment, which can include traditional dances, comedy, and magic shows. Quality truly varies, and many American guests at budget D.R. resorts complain that these activities tend to be conducted in Spanish. We suggest getting away from the resorts for the best entertainment.

Jamaica: Jamaica does have beautiful sand beaches, but Negril is better known for its adrenaline-pumping cliff jump into the crystal-clear water below at Rick’s Cafe. Other popular activities include horseback riding in the ocean (the horses actually swim for part of the trek), waterfall swimming in Blue Hole, and taking the Bob Marley Nine Mile Tour to learn about reggae. Speaking of which, the island hosts several annual musical festivals and there’s almost always a dance party on the beach or in the nightclubs. In Kingston, Olympic runner Usain Bolt opened a sports bar and restaurant called Tracks and Records.

Dominican Republic: Activities in the Dominican Republic range from adventure (zip-lining through rain forest canopy) to history (walking tour of Santo Domingo). Ocean World Adventure Park is a popular place for sea lion shows. Scape Park at Cap Cana is a must-visit for a cenote swim, cave swim, and indigenous cultural exhibits. Outside of Punta Cana, most of the nightlife caters to locals and can feel intimidating to tourists, but Punta Cana has an epic nightlife scene that includes cave bars. Note that the water isn’t ideal for snorkeling or surfing in the D.R.

Language and Safety in Jamaica and the Dominican Republic

Though both destinations are extremely safe for tourists (especially most parts of Montego Bay and Punta Cana), there are two very specific caveats that might make some visitors uncomfortable.

Jamaica: Marijuana was decriminalized in 2015, and though trafficking and possession of the herb is still illegal, possessing less than two ounces of marijuana is considered a petty offense. Drugs are regularly offered to tourists on the beaches and in the streets, though a polite “no thanks” is usually all it takes to deter a sale. Visitors should be cautious of petty theft in Kingston. Also note that homosexuality among men is illegal and there’s a general hostility toward LGBT individuals. English is the predominant language in Jamaica.

Is It Safe to Visit Jamaica Right Now? 

Dominican Republic: Prostitution is legal and visible in the Dominican Republic. With a quarter of the population living below the poverty line, it’s no surprise that many women turn to sex work. Boca Chica and the north coast’s Sosua are the two big areas for prostitution, and male tourists are targeted. Some of the smaller (and cheaper) hotels cater to this clientele, which can feel unsafe for families and female travelers. Spanish is the predominant language, which can make exploring the island and communicating outside of the tourist areas difficult for non-Spanish speakers.

Jamaica: Jamaica does have beautiful sand beaches, but Negril is better known for its adrenaline-pumping cliff jump into the crystal-clear water below at Rick’s Cafe. Other popular activities include horseback riding in the ocean (the horses actually swim for part of the trek), waterfall swimming in Blue Hole, and taking the Bob Marley Nine Mile Tour to learn about reggae. Speaking of which, the island hosts several annual musical festivals and there’s almost always a dance party on the beach or in the nightclubs. In Kingston, Olympic runner Usain Bolt opened a sports bar and restaurant called Tracks and Records.

Dominican Republic: Activities in the Dominican Republic range from adventure (zip-lining through rain forest canopy) to history (walking tour of Santo Domingo). Ocean World Adventure Park is a popular place for sea lion shows. The Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park and Reserve has 12 gorgeous freshwater lakes, three of which are available for swimming. Outside of Punta Cana, most of the nightlife caters to locals and can feel intimidating to tourists. Also note that the water isn’t ideal for snorkeling or surfing in the D.R.

Language and Safety

Occidental Punta Cana/Oyster

Though both destinations are extremely safe for tourists (especially Montego Bay and Punta Cana), there are two very specific caveats that might make some visitors uncomfortable.

Jamaica: Marijuana was decriminalized in 2015, and though trafficking and possession of the herb is still illegal, possessing less than two ounces of marijuana is considered a petty offense. Drugs are regularly offered to tourists on the beaches and in the streets, though a polite “no thanks” is usually all it takes to deter a sale. Visitors should be cautious of petty theft in Kingston. Also note that homosexuality among men is illegal and there’s a general hostility toward LGBT individuals. English is the predominant language in Jamaica.

Dominican Republic: Prostitution is legal and visible in the Dominican Republic. With a quarter of the population living below the poverty line, it’s no surprise that many women turn to sex work. Boca Chica and the north coast’s Sosua are the two big areas for prostitution, and male tourists are targeted. Some of the smaller (and cheaper) hotels cater to this clientele, which can feel unsafe for families and female travelers. Spanish is the predominant language, which can make exploring the island and communicating outside of the tourist areas difficult for non-Spanish speakers.

Homage to 9 great, historic Atlanta buildings reborn as restaurants

Both old and new, these eatery spaces shine in remarkable settings from Decatur to downtown

News recently broke of the closing of fine dining restaurant Rose & Rye inside the “Castle” building on 15th Street in Midtown. The ambitious eatery made media waves when opening in 2017 for its team of women holding top positions, from management to chef staff, but with the building’s current owners filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November and putting it on the market, there are fair questions to be asked about whether or not building out an eatery inside a historic space is something Atlantans will support as the city changes.

Let’s hope so.

The fact is, restaurants and bars dotted all around Atlanta are not only surviving but thriving in architecturally significant buildings that have stood long enough to claim “historic” status. Here are some of the standouts.

Ponce City Market

Walking in from street level to Ponce City Market’s Central Food Hall feels like stepping into updated history—only more fun, especially when you’re hungry.

As one of Atlanta’s most iconic and important renovated landmarks, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this former Sears & Roebuck Co. distribution center is full of corporate offices, retail shops, and random experiences. But it’s the food and drink that keeps folks coming back.

Chief among PCM attractions for those arriving with appetites are the Italian restaurant and market Bellina Alimentari, Ton Ton ramen bar, Biltong Bar for cocktails you’d hardly expect to be fantastic since they’re served alongside dried cutlets of South African beef jerky, Tasty China Jia (the crispy quail is wildly spicy but worth it), H&F Burger, and casual Mexican restaurant Minero, whose standout chicken wings are shaken in brown bags full of spice before plated in front of you. Also don’t miss the food in other areas of the property, including Root Baking Co. on the second floor, Pancake Social on the outer edge facing North Avenue, and The Roof, where Slater Hospitality runs beer garden 9 Mile Station and the secretive 12 Cocktail Bar, which has its own elevator, security, and boasts the highest public perch in the building, in a space where a historic radio program was once broadcasted.

The Brasserie and Neighborhood Cafe at Parish

Tucked into the side of a sloping hill next to the Beltline, where Inman Park meets Old Fourth Ward, Parish’s presence on Highland Avenue doesn’t just predate the latest round of restaurants and bars to arrive in the past decade. It’s been around since 1890, and the building is (almost) all that’s left of the Atlanta Pipe Factory Terminal Building.

The two-story restaurant is inspired by New Orleanian cuisine, although the menu has shifted to more tavern-style eats like orange-glazed, pan-seared salmon (but with French lentils). They still serve a good chicken and sausage gumbo, alongside a solid brunch of chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits and corned beef hash, but it’d honestly be nice to get some beignets.

Hugh Acheson isn’t new to opening a restaurant in or near a historic bank. Take for example his first Atlanta restaurant, Empire State South, which sits across the street from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. This time he’s in the Candler Building, completed in 1906 by Coca-Cola co-founder Asa Candler, who also put a financial institution of his own—Central Bank & Trust—on the main lobby floor of the 17-story tower.

By George, which leans into Acheson’s French cuisine aspirations, is the featured restaurant for the building’s new status as the Candler Hotel, part of Hilton’s Curio Collection.

The dinner menu offerings (the wonderfully tart steak tartare or the expertly prepared steak diane could both turn a vegan into a vampire) remind you that Acheson is clearly comfortable in his Canadian skin, and intends to set a new dining standard in downtown. Breakfast and lunch are also served, and superstar drinks-master Kellie Thorn is behind ingenious sips that make proper use of cognac, armagnac, and other French spirits.

Beyond the food, the space is surrounded by marble to a level you’re not likely to see duplicated in any new restaurant in or outside Atlanta, unless it’s by someone with Coke money.

Now that tenants are arriving in this Reynoldstown adaptive-reuse development, Atlanta Dairies is once again ready to milk the benefits of its funky Art Deco, Memorial-Drive-facing facade and prime Beltline location.

Beginning in the 1940s as a dairy co-op, it now houses Wonderkid, a classic diner from the teams behind such successful F&B brands as King of Pops, The Lawrence, and Bon Ton.

Chef Justin Dixon (previously at The Shed at Glenwood) turns out delicious interpretations of classics, such as the falafel waffle and roasted chicken pot pie, served from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. After that, the late night menu goes back to breakfast, and lets anyone that’s always rapped along with OutKast on the chorus of Rosa Parks but never actually tried fish and grits to get their fill. The cocktail program is also a standout, the beers range from wonderfully cheap (but still great), to Atlanta-based crafts, and it also has the distinction of being the first place in the world dishing KoP’s soft-serve, which is obviously apropos for the concept.

Livingston Restaurant + Bar and Edgar’s Proof & Provision

The Georgian Terrace Hotel dates back to 1911, famous for a screening of Gone with the Wind that attracted major stars of the day, including Vivian Leigh, Clark Gable, and Lawrence Olivier.

Today, Livingston, an elegant two-story dining hall named after Atlanta’s 37th mayor Livingston Mims, attracts folks hungry for a Southern meal, from breakfast through dinner and on to brunch, with special pre-show dinner options for Fox Theatre ticketholders. For later-night bites and cocktails, there’s Edgar’s down below Peachtree Street, where bourbon and more is poured until midnight on weekdays, and until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, for guests on black leather banquettes between brick columns.

Kimball House

As the former depot was being transitioned from what used to be Depeaux.

While the controversial white paint might make it hard to envision Golden Eagle and Muchacho as a former train station built in 1891 (more on that in a minute), you can immediately tell that’s what Kimball House used to be, as you approach the formerly forest-green Decatur Square restaurant and bar at 303 East Howard Avenue.

Known for serving some of the best and freshest oysters in the city (apparently KH’s partners, who are also behind Krog Street Market’s Watchman’s, are soon to begin farming their own oysters in Alabama), it’s also notable because the details of the interior and exterior retain some of the energy of motion you feel in any transit station. The tiled floors, high ceilings and tall windows give the feeling that you’re passing through a place where people who make moves have been coming for years, and will continue to do the same.

There was a bit of a scare when The Plaza on Ponce (or Briarcliff Plaza, depending on whom you ask), was sold in 2017 to Charlotte-based Asana Partners, particularly among Atlantans who’re big fans of watching indie/campy films at The Plaza Theatre, preceded or followed by a sturdy meal at the beloved Majestic Diner, which itself has been serving customers 24 hours a day since the start of the Great Depression. Late last year, two new restaurants opened on the property: Southern Belle and Georgia Boy.

The former is a restaurant homage to the wife of Chef Joey Ward (a talented protégé of chef Kevin Gillespie), while the latter is a hidden entry chef’s kitchen with a mind-blowing tasting menu, which changes at Ward’s whim but has included such inventive items as a fully edible snow globe. And while GB’s aesthetic leans much more steely, Southern Belle’s lofty interior, including a tall, deep-blue-painted archway, exposed brick and original tin ceiling, make it feel like a dining hall that’s been ringing dinner bells much longer.

It’s only right that Krog Street Market has high-quality restaurants, since the Beltline-adjacent building opened in 1889 as the factory for Atlanta Stove Works, where cast iron was used to make sturdy cooking ranges.

After a few years of operating as an early iteration of Tyler Perry Studios, the factory was purchased and turned into a market food hall, where today you can take almost anyone that’s hungry and be pretty sure they’ll leave satisfied.

From the impressive pizza pies at Varuni Napoli, to the seafood entrees, oysters and fabulous cocktails at Watchman’s (try the pineapple pancakes from their great new Sunday brunch), the top-tier burgers at Fred’s Meat & Bread, the always reliable dumplings at Gu’s, or the burns-so-good hot chicken at Richards’ Southern Fried, the only things that probably don’t taste good are the flowers, dog treats, and soaps from the retail stands.

Golden Eagle/Muchacho

Back more than 80 years ago, when the Beltline was a two-word phrase, this Reynoldstown building was constructed as a train depot. After being abandoned in the mid-20th century, it sat vacant for decades until restaurateur Jerry Slater took it over and opened popular cocktail bar H. Harper Station in 2010.

While H. Harper sadly didn’t last long enough to see the arrival of the renewed, single-word Beltline (it closed on April Fool’s Day 2016), the space was quickly purchased by one of the owners of Ladybird, another Beltline restaurant and bar, and opened as two separate restaurants—Golden Eagle and Muchacho—in 2017.

There was a bit of controversy when the new owner decided to paint the brick building, but things have since calmed down, thanks to favorable opinions of GE/M’s ambiance. What also doesn’t hurt: breakfast tacos and coffee worth eating and drinking at Muchacho, plus Golden Eagle’s respectably delicious tavern food (prime rib specials on Mondays, whole cast-iron-roasted chicken) and very fancy cocktails. Spirits enthusiasts seem to agree that, while Slater’s drinks were stellar, Eagle’s beverages are similarly brag-worthy.

Billionaire Elon Musk Lauds Bitcoin As “Quite Brilliant,” Why Isn’t Tesla Going Crypto?

While Elon Musk has yet to formally delve into the Bitcoin space, he has long been a fabled member of the crypto community. Since finding his way to the headlines of the world’s media, the Tesla chief executive’s pro-innovation mindset has struck a chord with many enamored with cryptocurrencies.

In fact, some say that Musk’s unsaid raison d’etre of bettering society at large, especially by amending the world’s most harrowing issues (climate change, confinement on Earth, financial inequality), lines up with the goals held by many cryptocurrency insiders.

Thus, some have even argued that Musk could be Satoshi Nakamoto. Sahil Gupta, a former intern at Musk’s second multi-billion dollar enterprise SpaceX, once infamously claimed that Musk’s brief mentionings of cryptography, economics, the C++ computing language, along with the entrepreneur overarching vision scream Satoshi. The South African-Canadian entrepreneur has done his best to keep his mouth zipped regarding his candidacy for the Satoshi title, but that hasn’t stopped him from talking about cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin Is “Quite Brilliant”

While the crypto market has remained in a depressed state, save for Monday’s jaw-dropping rally, stars have begun to descend on this industry. Weeks ago, NewsBTC reported that a mass of celebrities, including the Spice Girl’s Mel B, Johnny Depp, Madonna, and Lionel Messi, had some involvement in cryptocurrency. More recently, Jack Dorsey of both Twitter and Square took to Joe Rogan to claim that the native currency of the Internet is likely to be Bitcoin.

And just on Tuesday, Elon Musk, the most well-known Silicon Valley guru, took to the New York-based ARK Invest’s “FYI” Podcast to touch on Tesla’s plans, autonomy, other innovations, such as crypto. Per The Block, who compiled his comments regarding cryptocurrencies, Musk made his comments with explicitly bullish tones.

After discussing Tesla’s most recent advancements, the hosts of the podcast, the CEO and an analyst at ARK, a disruptive innovation-centric investment group, took a brief aside. They asked Musk if he agrees with Dorsey’s recent comments on Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies at large. Interestingly, Musk responded with an answer, albeit somewhat cursory.

He tacitly agreed, noting that the “Bitcoin structure was (is) quite brilliant,” adding that Ethereum and “maybe some of the others” have merit too. Musk did admit that he isn’t too enamored with Bitcoin’s Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, noting that it is energy intensive.

Yet, he explained that fundamentally, crypto assets are great as they bypass currency controls, especially in nations embroiled in financial and political turmoil, like Venezuela. He added that cryptocurrencies are also a “far better way to transfer value than pieces of paper,” subsequently quipping that he’s sure of this “without a doubt.”

In spite of all this, he made it clear that Tesla isn’t going to foray into the crypto space in any capacity, noting that it would be a good use of his firm’s resources to prop up an offering.

Musk’s abrash comments quickly elicited responses from each and every corner of the crypto space. Matt Odell, a long-time pro-Bitcoin coder and industry personality, joked that the comments “confirmed” his bias that cryptocurrencies could oust banknotes. Changpeng “CZ” Zhao of Binance noted that eventually, “[Musk] will join the brotherhood,” adding that he is unequivocally sure that the businessman will take up a crypto mantle. CZ notably called on the Tesla founder to take up the Lightning Network Trust Chain torch last week, just days after Twitter’s Dorsey openly lauded Bitcoin in dozens of tweets.

Crypto Is Better Than Banknotes?

While Musk made notable acknowledgments in his brief appearance on ARK’s “FYI,” what stood out to many crypto investors was his thoughts on the dichotomy between banknotes & physical cash, and crypto assets, not centralized e-money. For a brief recap, Musk simply stated that he is unequivocally sure that crypto, whether it be Bitcoin, Ethereum, or otherwise, is a “far better” medium of exchange than pieces of paper. Shocking, right?

This may be deemed hearsay by pundits of the legacy world, but the world is already adopting digital mediums of exchange. Per previous reports from this outlet, Arthur Hayes of BitMEX took to his company blog to claim that platforms like WeChat Pay and AliPay have already begun to take over China’s financial system. Who’s to say that cryptocurrencies, a decentralized counterpart to these systems that tout their own currencies, cannot have a similar impact on society at large.

While Elon Musk has yet to formally delve into the Bitcoin space, he has long been a fabled member of the crypto community. Since finding his way to the headlines of the world’s media, the Tesla chief executive’s pro-innovation mindset has struck a chord with many enamored with cryptocurrencies.

In fact, some say that Musk’s unsaid raison d’etre of bettering society at large, especially by amending the world’s most harrowing issues (climate change, confinement on Earth, financial inequality), lines up with the goals held by many cryptocurrency insiders.

Thus, some have even argued that Musk could be Satoshi Nakamoto. Sahil Gupta, a former intern at Musk’s second multi-billion dollar enterprise SpaceX, once infamously claimed that Musk’s brief mentionings of cryptography, economics, the C++ computing language, along with the entrepreneur overarching vision scream Satoshi. The South African-Canadian entrepreneur has done his best to keep his mouth zipped regarding his candidacy for the Satoshi title, but that hasn’t stopped him from talking about cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin Is “Quite Brilliant”

While the crypto market has remained in a depressed state, save for Monday’s jaw-dropping rally, stars have begun to descend on this industry. Weeks ago, NewsBTC reported that a mass of celebrities, including the Spice Girl’s Mel B, Johnny Depp, Madonna, and Lionel Messi, had some involvement in cryptocurrency. More recently, Jack Dorsey of both Twitter and Square took to Joe Rogan to claim that the native currency of the Internet is likely to be Bitcoin.

And just on Tuesday, Elon Musk, the most well-known Silicon Valley guru, took to the New York-based ARK Invest’s “FYI” Podcast to touch on Tesla’s plans, autonomy, other innovations, such as crypto. Per The Block, who compiled his comments regarding cryptocurrencies, Musk made his comments with explicitly bullish tones.

After discussing Tesla’s most recent advancements, the hosts of the podcast, the CEO and an analyst at ARK, a disruptive innovation-centric investment group, took a brief aside. They asked Musk if he agrees with Dorsey’s recent comments on Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies at large. Interestingly, Musk responded with an answer, albeit somewhat cursory.

He tacitly agreed, noting that the “Bitcoin structure was (is) quite brilliant,” adding that Ethereum and “maybe some of the others” have merit too. Musk did admit that he isn’t too enamored with Bitcoin’s Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, noting that it is energy intensive.

Yet, he explained that fundamentally, crypto assets are great as they bypass currency controls, especially in nations embroiled in financial and political turmoil, like Venezuela. He added that cryptocurrencies are also a “far better way to transfer value than pieces of paper,” subsequently quipping that he’s sure of this “without a doubt.”

In spite of all this, he made it clear that Tesla isn’t going to foray into the crypto space in any capacity, noting that it would be a good use of his firm’s resources to prop up an offering.

Musk’s abrash comments quickly elicited responses from each and every corner of the crypto space. Matt Odell, a long-time pro-Bitcoin coder and industry personality, joked that the comments “confirmed” his bias that cryptocurrencies could oust banknotes. Changpeng “CZ” Zhao of Binance noted that eventually, “[Musk] will join the brotherhood,” adding that he is unequivocally sure that the businessman will take up a crypto mantle. CZ notably called on the Tesla founder to take up the Lightning Network Trust Chain torch last week, just days after Twitter’s Dorsey openly lauded Bitcoin in dozens of tweets.

Crypto Is Better Than Banknotes?

While Musk made notable acknowledgments in his brief appearance on ARK’s “FYI,” what stood out to many crypto investors was his thoughts on the dichotomy between banknotes & physical cash, and crypto assets, not centralized e-money. For a brief recap, Musk simply stated that he is unequivocally sure that crypto, whether it be Bitcoin, Ethereum, or otherwise, is a “far better” medium of exchange than pieces of paper. Shocking, right?

This may be deemed hearsay by pundits of the legacy world, but the world is already adopting digital mediums of exchange. Per previous reports from this outlet, Arthur Hayes of BitMEX took to his company blog to claim that platforms like WeChat Pay and AliPay have already begun to take over China’s financial system. Who’s to say that cryptocurrencies, a decentralized counterpart to these systems that tout their own currencies, cannot have a similar impact on society at large.
