Logistics and Warehouse Automation Market by Application in Canada
As the demand for faster delivery and improved service levels escalates, logistics companies are embracing automation technologies to optimize their operations. This shift is not merely a trend but a fundamental change in how businesses manage their supply chains, warehouse processes, and overall logistics strategies.
The Driving Forces Behind Automation
Several factors contribute to the rapid adoption of warehouse automation in Canada. E-commerce growth, particularly accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has intensified the need for logistics companies to enhance their operational capabilities. Customers now expect quick and accurate deliveries, putting pressure on logistics providers to streamline their processes. Also, labor shortages in the logistics sector have prompted companies to seek automated solutions to maintain productivity levels. The integration of automation technologies has become a strategic priority for many logistics firms.

Applications in the Market
Inventory Management
Inventory management is one of the most critical applications of warehouse automation. The ability to maintain accurate inventory levels directly impacts operational efficiency and customer satisfaction. Automated inventory tracking systems, bolstered by technologies such as RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) and IoT (Internet of Things), allow logistics companies to monitor stock levels in real-time. These systems minimize human error, reduce excess inventory, and improve order accuracy. By adopting automated inventory management solutions, logistics companies can ensure that products are available when needed, enhancing service levels. 2. Order Fulfillment
Order fulfillment represents a pivotal area where warehouse automation can significantly boost logistics efficiency. Automated picking systems, including robotic picking solutions and automated guided vehicles (AGVs), enable logistics companies to speed up the order fulfillment process while maintaining accuracy. These technologies reduce the time taken from order placement to delivery, allowing companies to meet customer demands promptly. Furthermore, automation in order fulfillment minimizes the risk of errors, which can lead to costly returns and customer dissatisfaction. 3. Shipping and Receiving
Efficient shipping and receiving operations are essential components of successful logistics management. Automation technologies, such as dock scheduling systems and automated sorting solutions, optimize the flow of goods in and out of warehouses. These processes and logistics companies can significantly reduce delays and enhance overall efficiency. Systems ensure that shipments are processed swiftly and accurately, improving the time for delivery and benefiting customer experiences. 4. Warehouse Management Systems (WMS)
A robust Warehouse Management System (WMS) is crucial for managing warehouse operations effectively. A WMS offers logistics companies the tools to monitor and control inventory levels, manage labor resources, and analyze implementation metrics in real-time. By integrating automation into WMS, businesses can achieve greater visibility into their operations and improve decision-making processes. Advanced WMS solutions can facilitate seamless communication between departments, improving operational efficiency. 5. Data Analytics and Reporting
Analytics plays a vital role in optimizing logistics operations. Automated data collection and reporting tools enable logistics companies to track key performance indicators (KPIs) and analyze their operations comprehensively. With the insights gained from data analytics, logistics providers can identify bottlenecks, streamline processes, and make informed decisions. This level of visibility not only aids in optimizing current operations but also assists in strategic planning for future growth.
Challenges and Considerations
While the benefits of warehouse automation are substantial, logistics companies must also navigate challenges associated with implementation. Initial investment costs can be significant, and companies must carefully assess their return on investment (ROI) before committing to automation technologies. Also, the new systems with existing processes can be complex, requiring thorough planning and training for staff. Change management is crucial to ensure employees adapt to new technologies and workflows.
The Future of Logistics Automation in Canada
As the logistics sector in Canada continues to evolve, the integration of automation technologies will only become more critical. Companies that invest in advanced logistics solutions will adapt to changing market demands and improve their competitive edge. The rise of technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics will further enhance the capabilities of logistics companies, paving the way for more innovative and efficient operations.
By embracing automation across various applications, businesses can achieve greater efficiency, reduce costs, and deliver superior. The shift towards automated logistics solutions is not just a trend; it’s a necessary evolution in the fast-paced world of supply chain management. As Canadian logistics firms adapt to this changing landscape, the future looks promising, marked by innovation and enhanced efficiency.

I keep thinking about how scary it must've been for Trevor to escape Arcadia to it being a blizzard outside. Like with the constant spring and other weather control in Arcadia up to that point Trevor probably hadn't ever seen anything worse than like a moderate drizzle and then he gets out and is imidietly faced with -20°c temperatures, strong winds and reduced visibility w/ snow. And on top of everything omg that is not a fun welcome into your new life

I had to leave insta for a hot sec because people were giving hot takes on how a woman (and essentially Canadians) are cruel to own dogs not suited for our weather. All because she was dressing her dog in the vet recommended clothes.
I made too many comments directly to people being like wtf. So we're not supposed to adopt animals? Are we to send them across the border? Do you think we DON'T have vets?
Like welcome to Canada assholes, where it can be -37c to +37c in the same place depending on the year (I've had days where its gone from -20 to +20)
Anyways I may have outed myself as audhd with my sense of justice and fixation.

Labor disruption coming for supply chains
Now is the time for labor unions to press ports and railways for new benefits for workers. There is a perfect storm of labor stoppages about to take place. Thursday (that’s two days from this writing) the Teamsters Canada union (TCRC) expects to strike the CPKC railroad, one of the two largest in Canada. CPKC is also a large US and Mexico railway, and we’ve yet to see if US unions will honor a…

"THE RUSH OF GRAIN MEANS SWIFT WORK," Toronto Star. October 4, 1913. Page 5. ---- Seven Samples of Grain Taken From Each Carload of Western Wheat. ---- "STABBING" A HARD JOB ---- Each Little Sample Laid Out on a Piece of Canvas - Winnipeg's Great Task. ---- Winnipeg. Oct. 4. - The rush of wheat goes on. The samplers in the railway yards work in groups of 13 and shifts of eight hours each. The men are divided over the work as follows: One man checks the numbers and opens the cars, eight men are employed in stabbing the cars, one man takes the sample bags, another closes and seals the car, and the last man carries the bags to the yard inspection office of the Grain Exchange, and one man is in charge of each group. The men who do the stabbing of the cars have the hardest work, as the cars are being filled to the absolute limit of weight, which leaves very little room, and it is no light undertaking to stab one of these cars to the absolute bottom in seven different places and keep it up for eight hours. Each sample as it is drawn out in the stabber is laid out on a piece of canvas. In this way it is possible to detect instantly if a car has been plugged. After the seven samples have been drawn the whole are mixed together, and from them the five-pound sample taken for the inspection office. The work is so perfectly organized that it is rare for more than six minutes to be taken to
The Busiest Man. Hector J. McLean, who is foreman in charge of sampling, has been with the Dominion Grain Inspection Department for twelve years, and for the past three has had entire supervision of the handling of all grain passing through the Canadian Pacific and Canadian Northern terminals at Winnipeg. He is a qualified grain inspector, but more than that he is a man with a genius for hard work.
One day recently the C. P. R. made a new record in terminal movement, namely, 5,014 cars in and out in one day. This probably is the biggest record of any sorting terminal in the world for the same time. There are yards, which are known as terminal yards, where trains come in and simply change engines and cabooses and go out again, but every train coming into the C. P. R. yards is sorted and remade. In ten hours 38 trains were despatched, a crew being called every 20 minutes. The grain trains coming in from the West run from 50 to 60 cars each, though one train of 68 cars of wheat alone was received, these cars being $3,000 capacity. East of Winnipeg it is not possible to haul such large trains, and trains are made up to capacity of grade, so that they may rush right through to the head of the lakes; and 41 80,000 pounds' capacity cars is the average of the train eastward from Winnipeg. The overhead bridge across the yard was crowded with spectators on Sunday afternoon, watching the cease- less movement of trains over the hump tracks.
The Yardmasters. A yardmaster occupies at once one of the most difficult and important positions in the whole railroad operation. The general yardmaster in a terminal like Winnipeg is a "kingpin," for if he falls down on his job, the steady flow of Western grain is at once checked, and all kinds of complications would follow. Needless to say, there is no falling down on the jib in Winnipeg this year, as the daily movement of cars in and out is abundant testimony.
The public have grown so accustomed to efficient railway service, that the stupendous movement is hardly appreciated, and, in fact, Westerners have grown so accustomed to growling at the railroads that they seldom stop to think that in spite of some imperfections and to high freight tariffs, the Canadian West has one of the most wonderful transportation systems in the world, length and haul and climatic conditions considered. The enormous amount of detail which must necessarily go to the perfect handling of such an immense number of cars (the greater part of which are handled on single tracks) demands not only men of thoroughness and reliability, but also men with "a vision."
The men in subordinate positions work in shifts of eight hours, but the general yardmaster of terminals, when the Western grain rush is on, works practically 24 hours a day, for though he goes through the ceremony of retiring at night, he does so with a telephone at his ear, and if any unforeseen contingency arises he is more likely to be found in the yards at three in the morning than he is in his bed.

Our First Update!
Hi everyone! Wow, the reception to DashCon 2 online has been insane. We are so incredibly grateful for the support! We know that there haven’t been a ton of updates in these past few weeks, but we promise that we’ve been planning a bunch behind the scenes. We're going to be going over a lot of information here that we covered in our newsletter, along with some more behind-the-scenes details.
If you haven’t subscribed to our newsletter, please consider doing so! We’ll be putting out monthly summaries of important updates, alongside regular short posts here on our blog and these longer summaries.
NOTICE 07/9/2024: We're currently having some trouble with the newsletter and cannot guarantee that you'll receive our summary right away. We're sorry for the inconvenience and working hard to resolve the matter
WHY HAVEN’T THERE BEEN MORE UPDATES
Frankly, a lot of the stuff we’ve been working on is pretty boring. We’ve been working a lot on budgeting and logistics, what you’d expect from a con that’s still pretty early on in development. We also haven’t wanted to rush announcing anything just to have something to put out; we don’t want to make promises that we can’t keep. We have more in the works, we promise, but we’ve been taking time to make sure that we’re laying a strong foundation for all future plans.
To be completely honest, we originally planned on publically announcing our plans in mid-September, which has definitely impacted our publication schedule. When we learned of Strange Aeons’ DashCon video we realized that it would be a great time to reach out to her (which we’d already planned on doing), and go public with our plans. We were also concerned that if we went public after her video it would be assumed that this was a cashgrab aiming to ride the hype from her video. Because of this, we’ve had far less to announce than we would’ve necessarily liked. However, we’re now at the stage where we’ll have a more consistent update schedule going forward.
OUR TEAM
To start, we have received a lot of questions about our team and experience. The DashCon 2 team is a mishmash of people in and around the convention world. For specifics you can consult our  About Us page, but as a collective we have people who have worked professionally as event/programming coordinators, volunteered at conventions/festivals/renaissance fairs, and of course, we've all been attending conventions as guests for over a decade.
If you’re interested in potentially joining our team, we’ve now opened up volunteer applications for people interested in helping organize DashCon Two. Please fill out this form, and we’ll be in touch soon!
Our team is also working hard to connect with other people in the con scene, especially in our local area. We’d like to give a big thanks to Jenn from Dangerous Ladies for consulting with us and shouting us out on Twitter. Please check her out on Twitter @dangerousladies!  If you’ve been involved in con organization and wouldn’t mind having a quick chat with us, we’d love to hear your two cents! Please contact us through this form.
VENUE
Unfortunately we don't have a specific venue confirmed yet. We’ve been in contact with a variety of venues available around our preferred date, but we're still negotiating the details. We cannot confirm anything until paperwork has been signed, but know that not matter what, we will be paying for our venue in advance.
Because of some new venue updates (that we can't talk about yet), the date of our event may be subject to change, but will remain within the month of July.
VENDOR APPLICATIONS
The team is thrilled by the excitement so many Canadian artists have for vending at DashCon 2. Vendor applications are not open yet because we haven't yet signed for the venue. Once the venue is confirmed we'll be able to finalize our numbers, including attendee expectations and price.
Thanks for reading! The DashCon 2 Team

Well, I just got VERY distracted.
I was researching wholesale sewing supplies companies, and came across one from Eastern Canada that showed their shipping policies and times, which included a map like... this.
Tumblr media
I've simplified the colours from the original, but not the positions of anything. And that made me DISTRACTED, because like... if you have also spent time staring at road maps of the prairie provinces, let me ask you: what the entire actual fuck, eh?
Let's superimpose. (Click for better resolution)
Tumblr media
This map is sus in so many ways I can't even explain what went wrong here. The northern shore of Lake Athabasca gets faster shipping than Winnipeg? Kindersley is a priority destination, but Regina isn't? Edmonton has been usurped by (*reads smudged writing on hand*) Edson? The best shipping in Alberta is not centrered around Calgary, but, like... Nordegg? It's not on the map, but I swear to god it's fucking Nordegg. Also, who the hell did Saskatchewan have to fuck to get that kind of relative priority? (Come to think about it, though, if I were in charge of Saskatchewan, I'd absolutely sell my honour for some kind of rural logistics boost. What else would I do with it?)
And I wouldn't mind, except that this is the map that tells me how fast my shipping is gonna be! This is the only indicator on their website that lets me know whether my shit will arrive tomorrow, or a week from now!
(Okay, self. Deep breaths. I'm getting a bit upset and overblown here. It's okay. Clearly my shit wouldn't arrive until the next business week whether I lived in the Pembina Valley or not.)
So, in the larger map, Ontario, Nova Scotia, Vancouver, and Victoria are all where they ought to be. But what if, I don't know, these shipping zones were the right size and shape, but just in the wrong place?
I'd still be desperately curious to know what Saskatchewan did. And if I had to accept them, I'd guess they'd be more like...
Tumblr media
If I'm right, clearly it's not just one thing wrong with them. They're not off in similar directions or amounts. At which point my only explanation would be that, like... someone started out with a shitty map, compressed the image, and then tried to blow it back up into a regular image again. And then it happened three more times, if not more.
MY FELLOW CANADIANS: DO BETTER
That's it that's my post. I wash my hands of the subject and will focus on suppliers from BC.
Except, just for fun, Saskatchewan's suspiciously spacious shipping corridor (what a great new tongue-twister!) with some European scale for spice.
