"The SDPC [Social Democractic Party of Canada] at the Lakehead appears not to have been content merely to contest elections. In 1912, having recently formed a union, the mostly immigrant workers of the Canadian Northern Coal and Ore Dock Company went on strike for better wages, hours, and working conditions. Bloodshed resulted when company officials, using local police and the militia, tried to suppress the striking coal handlers. The chief of police, two constables, and two Italian strikers were wounded. Fearing a general strike, the CNR quickly acquiesced to the demands of the coal handlers.
There was much in this incident that recalled earlier labour strife at the Lakehead. A new element, however, was the growing influence of radical socialists, who were thought to have sway over the coal handlers and to have been instrumental in their inclusion in the trade union movement. Prominent among the activists were “members of the Social Democratic Party of Canada,” including the party’s organizers for Port Arthur and Fort William, the Cobalt miners’ union leader James P. McGuire and the Reverend William Madison Hicks, as well as Herbert Barker, a volunteer organizer for the AFL. In April 1912, the three men led a number of English-speaking socialists in Fort William in establishing Ontario Local 51 of the SDPC. Initial members also included W.J. Carter; an architect named Richard Lockhead; Sid Wilson, a member of the British-based Amalgamated Carpenters; and Fred Moore, owner of the printing press that printed Urry’s The Wage Earner. Significantly, most of the members appear to have been Finnish or Ukrainian. Before the strike, members of the Fort William SDPC had spoken at meetings of the coal handlers and, in the case of Hicks, played an active role by leading a parade of workers in confronting Port Arthur mayor S.W. Ray on his way to read the Riot Act to the strikers. The meeting between the two men and the violence that ensued were coincidental, according to Morrison, as
the Social Democratic party posed no real or imagined menace to the citizens of Port Arthur … what alarmed the English-speaking community was the newly won influence of the socialists with the immigrant workers.
Supporters of the ILP [Independent Labour Party] of New Ontario such as Urry found themselves “at odds with radical socialism” as
not only had the socialists played a prominent part in the strike, though not the riot, but they were also attempting to organize Thunder Bay’s entire waterfront.
...
Calls for Hicks’s arrest began to appear in newspapers in both cities and the surrounding countryside. On 1 August 1912, officials arrested him for his role in a “tumultuous assembly … likely to promote a breach of the public peace.” Shortly after Hicks’s arrest and conviction (although he received a suspended sentence), SDPC organizers began an active campaign to take control, or at the very least undermine, the ILP-led Trades and Labour Councils. Following the strike, they sought to stage a general strike on the waterfront and, ideally, spread it throughout both Port Arthur and Fort William. As Jean Morrison writes, however, this was “a move disparaged by the British labour men for its disregard of the law which required negotiations and conciliation preceding strikes by transportation workers.” The attempt failed and widened the rift formed during the municipal, provincial, and federal elections of 1908 and 1911 and the labour unrest earlier in 1912.
...
The SDPC was also not left untouched. In preparation for the 1913 Fort William civic election, Urry and Hicks jointly developed in opposition to the SDPC a manifesto describing the class struggle in general and the issues facing the region’s workers in particular .... On the recommendation of the Elk Lake, Porcupine, and Cobalt locals that Hicks be expelled, the matter was referred to the Fort William membership. Despite facing the possibility that its charter would be revoked, Local 51 refused to expel Hicks and launched a vigorous defence on his behalf. The convincing agitator had a coterie of true believers, who “defended him to the last ditch refusing to believe that Hicks would do anything wrong.” He also had his critics, evidently including the 400-strong Fort William branch, which, it appears, sided with the Dominion Executive and expelled Hicks.
...
With Hicks departed one highly personalized version of a response to the ambiguous legacy of Lakehead socialism. Both the ILP and the SDPC grew rapidly during 1913. The labour councils in the twin cities began to discuss unity, in the form of construction of a joint Central Labour Temple. The Finnish branch of the SDPC in Port Arthur also called out for working-class and socialist unity. Moreover, as a more tangible indication of potential unification of the socialist and labour movements, SDPC organizer Herbert Barker was elected president of the Port Arthur Trades and Labour Council in April 1913. As so often proved to be the case, however, such incipient unity was challenged by the region’s sheer class volatility. The strike by street railway workers in May 1913 was a volcanic moment. As David Bercuson writes:
The walk-out provided a focal point for much of the hatred and bitterness that had developed between labour and its enemies in the twin cities for several years.
Rioting and violence were sparked by the CPR’s attempts to use strikebreakers. When strikers overturned a streetcar operated by strikebreakers, police arrested one of the participants and, when a crowd tried to get him out of jail, fired into the crowd, killing a bystander. Local newspapers tried to pin the violence on the socialists, who were allegedly responsible for agitating the crowd. The railway workers belonged to the Trades and Labour Councils in both cities and, in a show of solidarity, both councils called for a general sympathy strike. These calls went unheeded and most workers returned to work after four days of protest. In response, Urry, James Booker, McGuire, Bryan, and many members of the SDPC met at the Finnish Labour Temple. They criticized the local trades and labour councils “for not being radical enough to resist the ruling of an unscrupulous upper class.” They hoped the councils would become “more radical.” Not surprisingly, the obviously inflamed right-wing media in the twin cities characterized the meeting as one of “sedition, anarchy, socialism, violence and most everything else calculated to worry orderly society and responsible government.” It was not a critique of the Lakehead workers reserved for the mainstream press. Mayor John Oliver of Port Arthur summed up the situation well when he argued that the continued unrest in Port Arthur and Fort William was not wholly due to working conditions. Making specific mention of the strikes of 1909, 1912, and 1913, he suggested that the unrest had been the result of socialist agitators. Oliver wrote:
There is hardly a night in the week that inflammatory speeches have not been made by several agitators … something will have to be done to either remove them or check their actions.
Interestingly, Frederick Urry and J.P. McGuire were specifically named for their alleged advocacy of a general strike. McGuire was further singled out for his reputed suggestion that it would be an easy thing to cut telephone, telegraph, and electric lines."

this car (2009 mazda 3s) has had a very noisy fan for quite some time
we were quoted almost $1000 to fix the hvac blower in it, very expensive because the way™ to get to the blower requires removing the seats and then the entire dash (it's actually possible to replace the fan in situ if you're small, very flexible and don't mind working upside down but it's a serious pain in the ass for people our size!)
a couple years ago i ran across a web forum post where someone was able to clean out the fan from the engine side
for whatever reason i procrastinated it forever but finally yesterday i dove in and did it (directions on the forum post were probably 85% accurate but i think they were for a different generation of the car)
first part: fan sounds before; second part: pull fuzz out with a hook; third part: fan sounds after (the flutter you hear is wind on the microphone - the fan is as quiet as new) [watermark on the video is because i'm cheap and had three separate videos to put together since tumblr doesn't let you upload more than one video]
the fuzz came from under the engine cover; it was insulation and had been shredded by rodents; they must've taken it near that fan area but i didn't find any poops in the fan so my guess is that they made a nest in the trough nearby and it was sucked in to the fan. i was expecting to have to vacuum the fan chamber out, thinking it would be full of acorn shreds but instead the fuzz came out in three hook grabs.
i did cut one of the ribs of the grate covering the chamber so that i had better access; i had anticipated needing to remove the entire thing to be able to get a tube in there for vacuuming but as i said that was not necessary. to reduce future repetition i put some "hardware cloth" over it all:
this is a form of fencing useful for rabbits or chickens; the mesh is 1/4" (~6.5mm) and rodents can't get through it and they're unlikely to gnaw it either. some people make "gopher cages" to plant trees in because gophers come from the side underground and won't go through it there either... imo inadvisable because roots end up bound up inside the cage long before the stuff rusts out
tools were used:
a small flat blade screwdriver
a basic wrench
long hook made out of some 12ga fence wire with a hook bent into the end; a metal coat hanger would work great for this
a "puller" that's used to get the windshield wiper off of its bolt (after you pull the nut off)
the puller is a really useful tool and for $25 for three sizes and the ability to pull things off without destroying them it's a fantastic buy:
basically the puller is a fairly generic tool used to pull things off of a rod that they're probably stuck on, just like this windshield wiper arm is stuck on to the stud; the nut just capped the stud and kept the arm from eventually falling off (no danger of that today!)
you get the hooks under the thing, and then using a wrench you turn the screw and it pulls for you very slowly. in this case, it took half of a turn and i heard a "tink" and the arm came unstuck
you can buy these cheap at most auto parts shops or places like harbor freight / canadian tire. HF sells a set of 3-4 sizes of these; i think this is the only one i have and i think it came from amz
i worked super slowly to try to avoid breaking any plastics (the car is 15ish years old) and it took me 30 minutes to get the

Why is it that antinuclear campaigners consistently make assertions they know to be nonsense?
The Senate of Hamburg proposes to import hundreds of thousands of tonnes a year of brushwood from Namibia (a country not known for its verdancy) to burn under formerly coal-fired boilers. There is no way that ten tonnes of Australian or Canadian uranium, embodying the same fuel value (as used in present-day reactors, which only extract about 1% of the available energy), would be anything like as difficult to transport.
Indeed, as we have already seen, the first load of fuel for the Swiss nuclear station at Beznau came by air freight!
Nuclear fuel has one advantage that is immediately apparent and which may have far–reaching impact. From a weight standpoint it is the most portable of energy sources. Hydraulic sources are absolutely fixed geographically. As to coal, oil and gas, there are economic limits to the distances over which these conventional fuels may be transported. With nuclear fuels, however, tremendous quantities of energy are contained in exceedingly small volumes which can easily be moved. Thus, ultimately, the immobility of hydraulic resouces and the transport problems presented by conventional fuels should no longer be limiting factors in energy supply. Moreover, the ease of movement of nuclear fuels could largely compensate for the differences in the availability of conventional energy resources among nations.
― Walker L Cisler, Detroit Edison The Role Which Nuclear Energy Can Play as an Energy Source in the Next 25 to 50 Years (Geneva, 1955)
The best way to summarize the achievement thus far is to show you one picture. This is a CANDU fuel bundle similar to thousands which have already been produced by Canadian industry. It is about 3¼ inches in diameter by 19½ inches long. Its weight is about 33 pounds of oxide (or about 36 lb with its casing taken off). This picture was taken after the bundle had already raised as much steam as 25 30-ton car loads of 13 000 BTU/lb coal. Such a bundle could be manufactured in Halifax and delivered to power plants in Vancouver by air freight without increasing the cost of power in Vancouver by more than 0·01 mill/kWh.
AJ Mooradian, AECL, 1968, quoted by WB Lewis, Canada, the Quality of Life and Nuclear Energy, lecture given at Chalk River, 12 June 1970
Gordon McDowell has done yeoman service here by cutting a 2-hour segment from a 6-hour stream into a 40-minute video, and then into this two-minute highlight clip.

The Ultimate Guide to Finding the Cheapest Way to Ship Across Canada
Shipping across Canada can be a daunting task, especially when you're trying to keep costs low. Whether you're a small business owner looking to expand your reach or an individual sending a care package to a loved one, finding the most cost-effective shipping method is crucial. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore various options and strategies to help you discover the cheapest way to ship across Canada.
We'll cover everything from traditional postal services to innovative shipping alternatives, providing you with the knowledge you need to make informed decisions and save money on your cross-country shipments.
Understanding the Factors that Affect Shipping Costs
Before diving into specific shipping methods, it's important to understand the key factors that influence shipping costs across Canada:
Package Size and Weight The dimensions and weight of your package play a significant role in determining shipping costs. Larger and heavier items generally cost more to ship.
Distance Canada is the second-largest country in the world by land area, so the distance between the origin and destination greatly affects shipping prices.
Delivery Speed Faster shipping options typically come with higher price tags. If you're not in a rush, opting for slower delivery can save you money.
Insurance and Tracking Additional services like insurance and detailed tracking can increase the overall cost of shipping.
Fuel Surcharges Fluctuating fuel prices can impact shipping rates, especially for long-distance transportation.
Now that we've covered the basics, let's explore the various shipping options available for cross-Canada shipments.
Canada Post: The National Standard
Canada Post is often the go-to option for many Canadians when it comes to shipping. While it may not always be the cheapest, it offers a range of services that can be cost-effective for certain types of shipments.
Regular Parcel For non-urgent shipments, Canada Post's Regular Parcel service is often the most affordable option. Delivery times range from 2-9 business days, depending on the distance.
Expedited Parcel If you need slightly faster delivery, Expedited Parcel offers a good balance between cost and speed, with delivery times of 2-7 business days.
Xpresspost For time-sensitive shipments, Xpresspost provides faster delivery at a higher cost, with guaranteed delivery times of 1-2 business days within major urban areas.
Flat Rate Boxes Canada Post offers flat rate boxes for a set price, regardless of weight (up to a maximum). This can be a cost-effective option for heavier items being shipped over long distances.
Tips for Saving with Canada Post:
Use their online shipping tool to compare rates and services
Take advantage of small business solutions if you're a frequent shipper
Consider using their "Snap Ship" feature for discounted rates on certain services
Courier Services: Speed and Convenience
Major courier companies like FedEx, UPS, and Purolator offer shipping services across Canada. While they're often associated with higher prices, they can be competitive for certain types of shipments, especially when speed is a factor.
FedEx Ground FedEx Ground offers a balance of affordability and relatively quick delivery, with transit times of 1-7 business days across Canada.
UPS Standard Similar to FedEx Ground, UPS Standard provides cost-effective shipping with delivery times ranging from 1-5 business days.
Purolator Ground As a Canadian company, Purolator offers extensive coverage across the country with competitive rates for their ground service.
Tips for Saving with Courier Services:
Compare rates between different couriers using online quote tools
Look for promotional offers or sign up for business accounts to access discounted rates
Consider consolidating multiple shipments to qualify for volume discounts
Freight Shipping: For Larger Items
If you're shipping larger or heavier items, freight shipping might be the most cost-effective option. Several companies specialize in less-than-truckload (LTL) and full truckload (FTL) shipping across Canada.
LTL Carriers For shipments that don't require a full truck, LTL carriers like YRC Freight, Old Dominion, and XPO Logistics offer competitive rates.
FTL Shipping If you have enough goods to fill an entire truck, FTL shipping can be very cost-effective on a per-item basis.
Tips for Saving on Freight Shipping:
Get quotes from multiple carriers to find the best rates
Consider using a freight broker to access discounted rates and find the best carrier for your needs
Properly package your items to avoid additional fees for special handling
Regional and Local Carriers
Sometimes, regional or local shipping companies can offer more competitive rates than national carriers, especially for shorter distances within specific regions of Canada.
Examples of regional carriers:
Dicom (Eastern Canada)
Loomis Express (Western Canada)
Manitoulin Transport (various regions)
Tips for Saving with Regional Carriers:
Research carriers that specialize in your specific region
Compare their rates with national carriers for your particular route
Look for any promotional offers or new customer discounts
Hybrid Shipping Solutions
Some innovative shipping solutions combine different modes of transportation to offer cost-effective options for cross-Canada shipping.
Chit Chats Chit Chats leverages relationships with various carriers to offer discounted rates, particularly for shipments to the United States but also within Canada.
Netparcel Netparcel partners with major carriers to provide discounted shipping rates to both businesses and individuals.
Tips for Saving with Hybrid Solutions:
Compare their rates with traditional carriers for your specific shipment
Be aware of any membership fees or minimum shipping requirements
Check for any limitations on package sizes or destinations
Peer-to-Peer Shipping
For a more unconventional approach, peer-to-peer shipping platforms connect individuals who are already traveling with those who need items shipped.
Poparide While primarily a ridesharing platform, Poparide also allows users to request item delivery along established routes.
Kangoo Kengoo is a community-based shipping platform that connects shippers with travelers heading in the same direction.
Tips for Using Peer-to-Peer Shipping:
Ensure you're comfortable with the security measures in place
Be flexible with delivery times, as they depend on traveler schedules
Understand that this option may not be suitable for all types of items or urgent shipments
General Tips for Cheap Shipping Across Canada
Regardless of the shipping method you choose, here are some universal tips to help you save money:
Plan Ahead Allowing for longer delivery times often results in lower shipping costs. Plan your shipments in advance when possible.
Optimize Packaging Use appropriate-sized boxes and minimize empty space to avoid dimensional weight charges.
Consider Consolidation If you're sending multiple items to the same area, consolidating them into one shipment can be more cost-effective.
Look for Discounts Many carriers offer discounts for online booking, loyalty programs, or volume shipping.
Use Shipping Rate Comparison Tools Websites and apps that compare shipping rates across multiple carriers can help you find the best deal quickly.
Be Accurate with Measurements Providing accurate dimensions and weight for your package helps avoid surprise fees or delays.
Understand Shipping Zones Familiarize yourself with shipping zones to better estimate costs and choose the most economical option for your destination.
Consider Pickup vs. Drop-off Some carriers offer discounts if you drop off your package at their location rather than scheduling a pickup.
Conclusion
Finding the cheapest way to ship across Canada requires a combination of research, planning, and understanding your specific shipping needs. While Canada Post often provides a solid baseline for comparison, exploring alternatives like courier services, freight options, regional carriers, and innovative shipping platforms can lead to significant savings.
Remember that the cheapest option can vary depending on your package's size, weight, origin, destination, and delivery timeframe. By taking the time to compare different services and applying the tips provided in this guide, you can make informed decisions that balance cost-effectiveness with reliability and convenience.
Ultimately, the key to cheap shipping across Canada lies in flexibility and thorough research. Don't be afraid to try different methods for various shipments, and always keep an eye out for new services or promotional offers that could save you money. With a strategic approach to shipping, you can ensure that your packages reach their destinations across this vast country without breaking the bank.

Shipping from Shenzhen to Canada: How Did Hongmingda Logistics Successfully Earn the Trust of a New Customer?
In April of this year, Ting, a new sales representative at Hongmingda China freight forwarder, received her first inquiry from Ravi, a customer from Canada. He needed shipping from Shenzhen to Canada for a batch of baby crawling mats, with a required delivery time of within a month.
It was clear from Ravi's tone that he did not trust Ting, which is understandable as it was their first cooperation. For the customer, choosing a reliable China freight forwarder for this shipping from Shenzhen to Canada is crucial. For Ting, it was a significant opportunity that she cherished, aiming to fulfill Ravi's shipping needs successfully.
To alleviate Ravi's concerns, Ting first provided a detailed introduction to Hongmingda China freight forwarder and explained what Hongmingda Logistics could do for him. Through face-to-face video meetings, she showcased the company's corporate culture, office environment, promotional videos, photos, and the official website, giving Ravi a better understanding of Hongmingda Logistics.
Founded in 1998, Hongmingda China freight forwarder is not a small workshop. The company headquarters are in Shenzhen, China, with an 1800-square-meter Grade A office, accessible for video tours at any time.
Hongmingda China freight forwarder is also a vice president of 13 freight forwarding associations, including the Shenzhen Airlines Association, WCA, JC Trans, WIFFA, and OLO, among others. This places it in the top 1% of domestic qualified enterprises, with freight rates and shipping channel solutions superior to the competition.
Next, Ting thoroughly understood Ravi's shipping needs and customized a shipping from Shenzhen to Canada logistics plan, considering factors such as transit time, cost, and safety. For this shipment, Ravi opted for fast sea shipping.
The route provided by Hongmingda Logistics for this shipping from Shenzhen to Canada started from Yantian Port in China, crossing the Pacific Ocean, and arriving at Vancouver Port in Canada. This route offers two shipping schedules: a slow ship, which takes about a month and is cheaper, and a fast ship, with a transit time of 15-20 days but at a higher cost.
Lastly, Ting showed Ravi a positive review video from another Canadian customer, Tom. This convinced Ravi to entrust the shipping from Shenzhen to Canada to us. The goods arrived in Canada on April 28th, and Ravi was very satisfied with our service and delivery time. This successful cooperation earned Ting Ravi's trust, and he will seek Ting's quotes for future shipments from Shenzhen to Canada.
In this internet era, building trust between strangers without face-to-face interaction and identity verification is challenging. Ting's sincerity evidently moved Ravi.
Both in the real world and online, Hongmingda Logistics' strong capabilities are evident. Give us a try—Hongmingda China freight forwarder, a company with over 20 years of experience, won't disappear after just one order.
As a China freight forwarder with over 20 years of experience, Hongmingda Logistics cares more about its customers' needs than they do themselves. If you have shipping needs from Shenzhen to Canada, please contact us at [email protected]. We are confident you will be satisfied.

"Tensions came to a head when the federal government announced that it was contemplating conscription. For reasons unknown, both unions and the Trades and Labour Councils in both Port Arthur and Fort William reversed their previous position and joined local socialists in condemning the idea. The subsequent qualified decision of the TLC to approve the government’s conscription policy exacerbated the growing divide within the region. Predictably, local newspapers began to attack all those who opposed both the idea of conscription and the signing of national service cards. In turn, socialists became more vocal in their denunciation of the local press. Most meetings occurred in the Port Arthur Finnish Labour Temple, which was still under the control of the local Finnish branch of the SDPC [Social Democractic Party of Canada].
In January 1917, 700 men in Port Arthur rallied to the banner of the SDPC at a meeting about the National Service Bureau and its plans for a manpower survey, accurately interpreted as a first step towards a conscription policy. “The government ignored us then and has done so since,” Bryan declared, “except when they wanted to use us for their purposes.” He also proclaimed to the largely “foreign-born” audience that
they [the government] will never force me to sign this card, but they may put me where it is unnecessary to do so. If they made a practice of this, they will have a large board bill to pay. How many of you are willing not to sign the cards and go behind the bars if necessary? To be behind them would not be much more a form of slavery than that we are now in.
To those who stood up and began to cheer, Bryan said:
This was the kind of spirit that will make them [the government] sit up and take notice.
...
As increasingly became the case in the months following the first Russian Revolution in February 1917, the ethnicity of the strikers became the main point of discussion in local newspapers and in negotiations with government officials. A strike by pulp mill workers and freight handlers in Fort William in April, for instance, immediately led to concerns over a general strike and a focus on the fact that many “non-naturalized immigrants” were on the strike committee.
...over 850 men and women, mostly from the Finnish and Greek communities of both cities, attended a meeting chaired by Bryan in the Port Arthur Finnish Labour Temple on 3 June and passed a resolution condemning conscription. ... Many applauded William Welsh when he told the government officials present, “I’ll fight for my country when you show me where my country is.” Bryan, quoting from a speech made by German socialists to the Reichstag, told those present that
it is the duty of workers to fight the tyranny of government in their own country. Because a man is born on a piece of land which he never owns is no reason for his having to fight for it.... Conscription means that we favor putting a debt on the heads of our children. They will have to pay the national debt when we are dead.
Tensions came to a head in late July, when Fort William police uncovered the existence of an anti-conscription league operating in the twin cities. Headquartered in Port Arthur, the league’s membership drew heavily from members of the SDPC. Its executive consisted of Kettridge (president), Barker (treasurer), and J. Brown (secretary). Despite attempts by local officials assisted by the militia, meetings occurred in secret and, as one newspaper reported in September, “all is quiet and [unclear] along Bay street, especially in the neighborhood of the [Finnish Labour Temple] which is generally supposed to be the headquarters of the socialistic and anti-conscription element.”
In early October 1917, about 1,100 elevator employees in both Port Arthur and Fort William went on strike over wages, hours, and working conditions. All activity in both cities ground to a halt as the ports could no longer take incoming ships and the CPR became congested when grain coming from the west could no longer be unloaded. Much of the discussion in both cities regarding the strike focused on conflicting reports over how many “aliens” were involved. The Grain Elevator Workers’ Union Local 934, in particular, took issue with claims by employers and some officials that workers of certain (i.e., non-English) “nationalities” on strike had been discriminating against returned soldiers. The unions involved claimed that only 40 percent of the militants were “aliens,” whereas the employers reported to local newspapers that such people made up over 80 percent of the strikers. The ethnicity of the strikers was clearly a paramount issue in public discussions of the strike. By the fifth day, the workers were being ordered back to work, on pain of being arrested. They refused. Only after the personal intervention of Prime Minister Robert Borden– who assured strikers that arbitration proceedings would be instituted and that the government would assume control of the elevators – did they return to work after two more days."
