I recently watched a video of a pair of Sandhill Cranes raising a Canada Gosling, and it seems that it isn't the first example of it in the last few years. Are cranes like penguins where they will steal eggs/hatchlings if they had an unsuccessful breeding season, or is there some other reason that they 'adopt' baby geese?

If you follow enough birding groups in Sandhill crane territory, you’ll eventually see someone post a baby duckling or goose that is following around a pair of cranes. It’s not common, but it happens enough to be a thing!

Sandhill cranes don’t seem to steal babies, but they have an extremely strong parenting instinct. If they find a baby that needs taking care of, you can bet they’re going to take damn good care of it. There are documented cases of Sandhill cranes adopting unrelated crane chicks as well as geese and domestic ducks. They just love babies. There has even been some research into using Sandhill cranes as foster parents for endangered whooping cranes in order to re-establish a non migrating population of the latter. Sandhill cranes are super parents!

Follow up to the New Year's game ask, the kindness is actually one I've seen from several of the students I work with. With each group were playing a competitive board game they'd picked and one kiddo had a lot of the items to get past the obstacles while the other was having really bad luck. Well, when unlucky kiddo landed on a monster space and should have had to go backwards again, the other student asked if they could use one of their items to help and turn it into a team game instead, where they worked together to get each other to the end. That's what we do and it is so sweet to see a student wanting to help another not feel bad and get frustrated. I always ask if they want to play it competitive or team and I've had it happen where they pick competitive, but then will switch it to team if the other student is getting upset or sad. They just want to have fun playing the game and it's more enjoyable for them if the other student is having fun too.

That's so great actually!

This year, in Kensington Park, Michigan, a family of sandhill cranes raised a Canada goose as their own baby, alongside their own.

This was the first documented case of sandhill cranes raising a chick from outside their own genus!

15th April 2024: Bright green leaves and a carpet of dandelions out the front, Canada Goose and bluebells on my lunch time walk at Lakeside, camellia in the garden and view and Great Crested Grebe chicks at Lakeside.

A beautiful softly singing Blackcap in vegetation and Speckled Wood towards the end of the walk, Lesser Black-backed Gull with their sunshine yellow legs glowing in the sun, Blackbird and Starling at Lakeside and home, Robin, House Sparrow at home, cuckooflower, cuckoo-pint and garlic mustard were other key species today.

Snow Goose (Anser caerulescens)

IUCN Conservation Status: Least Concern

There are two distinct colour variants of Snow Geese, known as “morphs”: “Snows”, which have entirely white feathers, and “Blues”, which have white heads but brown and bluish-grey bodies (note that in the image above, two Snows can be seen in the foreground and two blues can be seen in the background.) The two morphs were at one time regarded as two separate species, but as Snows and Blues are almost always seen living together, regularly breed with one another and may produce chicks that are themselves either Snows or Blues it is now widely accepted that they are simply two different variants of a single species. Found mainly in North America, Snow Geese breed in northernmost Canada, Greenland and Alaska (as well as occasionally on Wrangle Island off the northeastern coast of Russia) and migrate south to Mexico and the southern USA during the autumn/fall and winter. Travelling and nesting in enormous (and often extremely noisy) flocks, Snow Geese are largely herbivorous (feeding on seeds, grasses and aquatic vegetation) and always return to the site at which they hatched to breed, with both parents working together to protect their nest, eggs and chicks. Snow Goose goslings can fly within 45 days of hatching and reach full maturity at around 2 years of age, although they do not typically select a mate (with which they will remain for life) until they are 3-4 years old. If a Blue and a Snow mate their offspring can be either Blues or Snows, and upon reaching maturity young Snow Geese seem to select a mate based on the morph of their parents (for example, an individual born to two Blues will show a preference for another Blue as a mate, but individuals born to one parent of each morph show no preference for either morph.)

[CM] Birds - Yassga

Woohoo, bird time! Out of all my Claymew expansions, my bird list has definitely taken the most work. I have a special interest in birds IRL so I wanted to make it as accurate as possible - which means i’ve been adding, removing, and adjusting species for over two months! But thankfully I think I’ve finally landed on a good roster (though I can’t guarantee there won’t be changes in the future, as with everything about this project).

As a reminder, ClayClan sorts birds into four categories - yassga*, fafya, eyawoon*, and biyaw*. These categories will be split into five posts (the biyaw* list is so long I decided to cut it half). Learn about this sorting system here. Yassga* is the term for birds that pose a threat to cats.

Without further ado... let’s get birding! Below are translations for two hawks, bald eagles, geese, herons, and great horned owls. And a bonus verb, to celebrate bird time!

The Birds

Rough-legged hawk (Buteo lagopus) - Raee Large hawk with feathered legs and dark, streaky markings. Sometimes present in ClayClan during winter months. Though rare on the territory, they’re a threat when encountered, and may snatch young cats as prey. They feed on rodents, rabbits, and squirrels.

Red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) - Yaee Red-breasted hawk with distinctly striped wings. Present year-round but most common in spring and summer. Feed on reptiles, birds, and mammals. They’re large enough to take cats. 

Bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) - Ssipip Huge bird - adults have a white head and tail, but juveniles are dark with splotchy pale markings. Present year-round. Bald eagles aren’t actually a threat - they feed mostly on fish - but they’re so large and intimidating that Clan cats consider them yassga* anyway.

Adult canada goose (Branta canadensis) - Hwank Canada goose gosling (Branta canadensis) - Weep Huge and distinct, with a long flexible neck. Present year-round. Though they don’t prey on cats, they’re very capable of causing harm, especially when raising chicks - many warriors have stories of being young and stupid and getting chased, bit, or slapped by an angry goose! Goslings may be taken as prey up until about 4 weeks, but it’s a dangerous task.

Adult great blue heron (Ardea herodias) - Awk Great blue heron chick (Ardea herodias) - Eheh Very tall; have a long neck, long beak, and shaggy mane on chest. Present year-round, but most common in late summer and fall. They won’t go after cats but, like bald eagles, are intimidating enough that they count as yassga*. Chicks may be taken, but it’s dangerous.

Great horned owl (Bubo virginianus) - Woo’oo Big and strikingly cat-like with their yellow eyes, striped feathers, and expressive “ears”. Present year-round, but most common in spring and fall, and more often heard than seen. Feed on a variety of animals and may prey on small cats.

Bonus Verb

To swoop - Bwoosoo, bwoos, bwoo The word for how a bird comes down to catch its prey! Also the word for any particularly nice pounce, and a good suffix. I originally made this word to translate warrior Foggyswoop’s name (fun fact, name translating is how Claymew began).

I was just starting to build my flock of chickens from the four I already had (one rooster, three hens) to a Flight attendant airlines airplane stewardess shirt of ten. I bought six little two day old chicks from the local feed store – assured by the staff that all six would grow to be beautiful hens. Since I already had a rooster – and two roosters rarely get along – so wanted to be sure these were female. I named my chickens after dead movie stars (yes truly… don’t judge) but my Aunt Delores wanted one named after her, so I chose a Golden Phoenix chick and named her “Delores”. When Delores was eight weeks old, I began to have suspicions that she was edging towards a gender change. Delores was quite a bit larger than her step sisters, and was growing a more pronounced comb and longer tail feathers than the typical hen. However, denial is a powerful characteristic, and I tried to convince myself that Delores really WAS a hen and maybe she was just big boned.

Canada Goose, Branta canadensis

although known for being "aggressive", most mean geese are actually only acting out because they feel threatened or have a nest nearby! give them plenty of distance, and respect them, and both you and goose will be better for it :)

There’s been a pair of geese with their three goslings in toe wandering the shores of the lake the last week or so. Spring is here and new life is abound.
