hi, i'm currently potted plant witching as well (just planted my first crop of veggie/herb/flower seeds & got some more containers & soil today for more planting this weekend) and i would love to know more about your garden this year; would you be willing to outline your plans? any special herbs or projects? Thanks!! <3 love your blog!
🌿🌿🌿 HYPERFIXATION ACTIVATED. 🌿🌿🌿
OH I HAVE SO MANY PLANS, LET ME TELL YOU.
This is the first year that Ragnar and I are doing actual work and sweat equity with the yard at our new place. Last year things were just too chaotic and we didn't have the time or the energy to do much of anything. We trimmed occasionally and I harvest some wild plants, but that was about it.
This year, it's Go Time.
Last weekend, I finally busted out the gorgeous barrel pots we got for Christmas and spent my April market earnings on potting soil, garden tools, and seedlings. When we lived in the apartment, I had a pretty hefty window garden with herbs and flowers and a few vegetables, so I'm eager to recreate that in an outdoor space where the plants can really thrive. (I mean, I grew cherry tomatoes and three kinds of peppers in 10" pots indoors and they got pretty big, so I can only imagine being outdoors will go even better with fresh air and rain and pollinators.)
The potted garden has Napoli tomatoes, poblano and cayenne peppers, green sage, and rosemary, along with something I've never tried growing before - blueberries! I'm planning to add additional pots and more herbs later on, but I felt like this was a really good start. If I can manage it, I want to grow a huge planter of nothing but spinach and sweet basil so I can make pesto this summer.
We've also started clearing and tilling a space out in the yard proper for a raised-bed garden. Nothing too big or ambitious, just something we can try some larger veggies in. We're hoping to try the Three Sisters model with hybrid corn, snap peas, green beans, and kabocha pumpkins. I was also hoping to put in napa cabbage, but there are quite a lot of slugs in the yard when it rains, so perhaps not. I'm toying with the idea of planting some late crops for fall and winter harvests as well. I have sugarplum visions of strings of peppers and braids of garlic hanging in our kitchen with many jars of preserves and sauce in the pantry.
We might also try some other fruits if things go well, maybe raspberries or grapes, but that's more of a Next Summer project. The fence and the ground around it needs some work first and we don't want to overdo things the first year. (I'd really love to put in a little serviceberry tree, but that might be pushing things a bit with regard to space.)
There's also a side garden that's in need of some TLC where I'm vaguely tossing around the idea of climbing flower vines (clematis or morning glory or trumpet flower maybe? something local) and maybe some ground cover in the form of periwinkle. There's also a downspout that really needs a rain barrel, so that's next on the list.
There are sections of the yard that we've deliberately left wild as well, hoping to encourage native plants and pollinators. The clover patches are massive and produce lots of four-leafers and blossoms, so the bees are having a field day. There's also wild dogbane sprouting up now that the vetchweed is cleared and wild plantain (aka white man's foot) starting to come in along the walkway. If I have my druthers, I'll be planting more wildflowers this summer.
Have some pictures and tell me about your garden!

The (Real) Stardew Valley Farm
So a year and a half ago we bought a house, AKA the real life habitat ring. I swear the yard came with every single non-aquatic invasive plant we’ve got. Slowly but surely we’ve been murdering all the Japanese honeysuckle and poison hemlock, tearing up a truly inhumane amount of weed barrier and pea gravel, and adding truckloads of wood chips and other organic matter to start to repair the soil. Our goal is to replace everything with mostly native plants with an emphasis on food production.
But of course I needed more of a challenge. I love playing Stardew Valley. It’s really the only video game I play. And somewhere I got the idea, “Hey, wouldn’t it be cool to grow everything in Stardew Valley in our yard?” So here we are. Obviously I don’t live on some magical land with perfect weather, a giant greenhouse, and a second farm on a tropical island, so I have to make plenty of substitutions. I’m also trying to grow native plants whenever possible. Any suggestions are welcome!
2021
Amaranth - Native white amaranth (the birds love it!)
Grape - Native riverbank grapes (so many grapes) and some green cultivated variety from the neighbors
Dandelion - Obviously
Maple Tree - Native silver, red, and sugar maples (also an invasive Norway maple but we chopped it down)
Pine Tree - Not sure what kind of pines they are
Apple Tree - Not in great shape. I’d love an Enterprise apple tree at some point
Coffee Bean - Chicory (maybe that’s cheating, but it’s a naturalized plant commonly used as a coffee substitute)
Salmonberry - Not native to the Midwest, so we’re sticking with native black raspberries. We’ll likely add some pink/yellow raspberries later though
2022
Kale
Rhubarb
Strawberry - Both cultivated and native
Tulip
Radish
Tomato
Beet
Eggplant
Fairy Rose - Not a real thing so I substituted the native prairie rose
Cranberries - Native cranberry viburnum
Orange Tree -Native persimmons, which produce orange fruit
Daffodil
Spring Onion - Native nodding onions and also green onions indoors
Spice Berry - Native spicebushes
Wild Plum - Native
Hazelnut - Native
Crocus
Cherry Tree - Native black cherries and nonnative bush cherries
Tea Leaves - Native New Jersey Tea bush
Banana Tree - Native pawpaws, which are also known as Indiana bananas
Mango Tree - One of the pawpaws is a named variety called mango so I think that counts
Ginger - Attempted native wild ginger, which I don’t think survived, but am also growing ginger indoors
Green Bean
Sweet Gem Berry - Native Juneberry (Downy Serviceberry) which are a redish color
Planned for 2023
Blue Jazz - Not real so I went with the native Ozark Bluestar, which seems similar enough
Garlic
Parsnip
Apricot Tree - Native passionflower vine. Not a tree, but it is known as wild apricot
Blueberry
Sunflower - Both native and non-native sunflowers
Pineapple - Neither my spouse nor I like pineapples, so we’re going with white strawberries known as pineberries that are said to have a tropical taste
Pumpkin
Melon
Wild Horseradish - Except I’ll be growing it in a pot because it tends to get a little too wild for my tastes
Holly - Native winterberry holly
Oak Tree - Native dwarf chinquapin oak
Sweet Pea
Hot Pepper
Palm Tree - Obviosuly not going to work here but there is a native palm sedge that I’ll plant instead
Planned for 2024
Potato
Corn
Hops - Hoping to get a cutting from a native hops vine (if the local beer people don’t kill me)
Winter Root - I’m gonna go with native ground nuts because you can dig up the roots in winter
Poppy - Hopefully native wood poppy
Red Cabbage
Artichoke - Native Jerusalem artichokes
Cactus Fruit - Native prickly pear cactus
Yam
Bok Choy
Leek
Fiddlehead Fern
Blackberry
Crystal Fruit - I’m gonna go with honey berries, which produce fruit earlier than anything else
Ancient Fruit - Native Aronia berries are the only thing I can think of for this one. They’re blue(ish) and have lots of antioxidants so you live to be ancient
Figuring Out Substitutes
Rice
Wheat
Starfruit - Not really sure how to swing this one, so suggestions are welcome
Summer Spangle - Not real, so I’m open to suggestions of native plants. Possibly prairie lily? It has a similar-ish shape, is orange, and blooms in summer
Qi Fruit - Creepy little man
Taro Root - I would have to plant it in pots
Morel - I wish I could grow this
All the other mushrooms - I think I’ll just ignore any varieties and just try plugs or similar
Snow Yam
Cave Carrot - Trying to find a native carrot substitute
Coconut - I shouldn’t count this separately from palm trees, right?
Mahogany Tree
Peach Tree
Pomegranate Tree - There are Russian pomegranates that are hardy to zone 6, which just might work with climate change

Hi everyone,
For those that may not recognize my username, I’m Maisy. My main blog is @mabrego0714 I’m an artist and often post Star Wars art (along with other fandoms). I also have a writing blog @writingforfun0714 where I write fanfics (I’m not a writer and just do that for fun).
Now I’d like to start a gardening blog where I basically just journal what I have, what I use for my plants, harvests, and maybe even share some garden/plant art as well.
I AM A NOVICE/BEGINNER. I’m still learning and am definitely open to any tips, tricks, and/or hacks to any of my plants but full on hate/condescension/general assholery will not be tolerated because I want this to be a safe space for everyone including:
—disabled/nd folks
—minors
—other beginner gardeners
—literally anyone interested in gardening
So here’s some info about my garden/area.
USA: Zone 9 (a)
Normal climate on an avg day: warm to hot/dry/arid with few days of rain though we’ve gotten more rain than normal this year. Can get windy. I do get hurricane and tornado warnings during those respective seasons.
Soil in my area is incredibly rocky and clay-like so my garden is split into 2 parts: direct-sow and container garden. Also I’ve had plants that require full sun in my yard die due to the intense heat of summer and fall. So that means some full sun plants might need protection and/or partial sun in my area.
Both gardens get sun but direct-sow garden is full sun. Potted plants get morning sun along with partial afternoon shade thanks to my house.
Now for the fun, listing what I already have and the status of them as of this post 6/4/24:
Container garden:
Apple tree—new tree/adding new growth and is currently ~7-8ft tall.
Peach tree—new tree/ has 4 small golf ball sized peaches and is currently ~6-7ft tall.
Olive tree—new tree/new growth and is ~4.5ft tall.
Fig tree/bush?—small but new growth.
Blueberries—I have 4 blueberry plants that range from a small fruiting bush to plants that are recovering from a fungal infection. I originally got 3 of them when they were packed in clay soil and developed blueberry blight (they were on clearance) and thought I could save them despite no knowledge of gardening/taking care of any kind of plant. I got some organic fungicide and changed the soil, adding in organic soil acidifier. They are currently recovering and adding new growth which I’m extremely proud of cuz I thought they would all die—which led me to buying the 4th one just in case the others didn’t make it. I’ll make a whole post about them later.
Raspberries—new plants with small buds growing. Currently ~2ft-3ft tall. I have 2 for pollination.
Blackberries—thorny vine producing fruit. I also have a thornless variety that is a small plant with new growth on it.
Elderberries—small bush that hasn’t flowered despite it being 2yrs old. Maybe it needs a pollinator?
Potatoes—I have 2 5gal buckets of potatoes. One has the plants yellowing/dying off and almost ready to harvest while the other bucket still has new growth.
Tomatoes—Lots of varieties that range from seedling, new growth to producing. Will make a tomato post as well.
Carrots—new growth and all carrots have their secondary leaves.
Onions—Chives specifically, rather small but still green and healthy.
Peppers—seedlings (we grew all our peppers from seed this year which takes longer and my dad and I started a bit late).
Chile pequin—established, flowering and producing small bush. Native plant in my area.
Green beans—producing
Cucumbers—flowering, about to produce
Native wildflowers—just past seedling, also doing great since I planted these way too late.
Daisies—seedlings
Radishes—They were doing well but we had high winds recently that wrecked them so I’m hoping they’ll come back.
Grapes—1 small 4ft vine from an online nursery and 2 fruiting vines about 6ft-7ft tall from Lowes. All green grapes.
Direct-sow/Ground Garden:
Corn—new growth, ~2ft tall with 1-inch thick stalks.
Tomatoes—Lemon boy hybrid, Super Sweet 100 hybrid, that are both flowering.
Pole beans—producing
Yellow Lantana—FLOWER. it migrated and exploded in my direct-sow garden. Doing great.
Melon patch—Mostly watermelon with cantaloupe. Everything is doing incredibly well and the watermelon have started to vine. I’ve got classic red sugar baby watermelon along with orange watermelon and yellow golden honey watermelon. Different color watermelon is common where I’m at. Will make a separate post for my melon patch too.
Exotic/Tropical/Cacti and Succulents/Unusual: I believe zones 9+ can grow lots of tropical fruit (but not all)
Pineapples—grown from tops. New growth but no flowers. All 3 are in a clay pot.
Pink Lemonade Blueberries—small plant with new growth. No flowers. Bought from online nursery early May ‘24.
Golden Raspberries—small plant with new growth. No flowers. Bought from online nursery early May ‘24. I have 2 for pollination.
Papaya—new tree with new growth but no flowers. ~3ft tall. I have 2 for pollination.
Pink Guava—new tree with new growth but no flowers. ~3ft tall. I have 2 for pollination.
I believe that’s it. So I think that’s all the important stuff I’ll include for my intro post but feel free to message me if you have a question or just wanna talk about gardening🌱🌿💚
Have a pic of one of the big grape vines I have. For reference it’s taller than me (I’m 5’3”). I will make posts about each plant this summer so get ready for that. If anyone has something they wanna see from the list, lemme know💚
Below the cut is a bit about me, how I got into gardening, why I’m doing it now, what I hope to achieve and future plans for my garden. Thanks to those that like/reblog this and it’s never too late to plant. Happy gardening🥰
I was lucky enough to grow up with a garden during my early childhood years thanks to my dad. My dad had me late in life (he was 45) and he grew up around his farmer grandparents, and his green-thumbed mother who could make anything grow but mostly grew flowers in her garden. Our garden wasn’t much but it produced a lot. It consisted of cherry tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers and corn, at least at first. Then my dad added sunflowers, melons, and peppers. It was great and I loved going out with my dad and helping him. Sadly life got in the way when I was 7 and I experienced a lot of trauma. My parents divorced and that was the end of the garden because my mom had no time or interest in the upkeep of the garden. I had tried myself but things started to die one by one.
Years and years would pass that I wouldn’t even consider gardening. I was too busy with trauma/family/school etc to focus on gardening. It wasn’t until I graduated high school that I really started to think seriously about gardening to produce food to survive. In college I started to research gardening in my spare time (being an artist, I was in school for animation and illustration) and after dropping out, I decided to pursue gardening as a way to get up and outside especially with the pandemic.
I think around the time of the pandemic, I started researching different kinds of gardens and fell in love with the idea of a food forest. I told my dad about my new interest in gardening and I think that also inspired him to also get back into it as well and now it’s our shared activity we do.
I’d love to eventually get a large enough harvest to share with friends and family and I will definitely be expanding my garden this year as well. There was lots of construction last year in my neighborhood which drove all the pests and insects towards my garden and discouraged me so lots of my plants (all the trees/most of the berries) I bought this year are new and I haven’t grown 95% of what I have now so I’m super excited.

BEHOLD!! MY GARDEN (or at least a part of it lol)
My "California Dreaming" rose, one of two I bought for Mother's Day. The other being "Cherry Parfait" which is not shown here.
White peach (Snow Queen)
This tree is about 9 feet tall and currently has about 200+ peaches. If they all come to term, I'm gonna be shoving them in everyones face cause there's no way I can eat that many.
Jakaranda tree with a hummingbird enjoying the flowers. This tree turns a portion of my yard purple from the quantity of flowers it produces.
Yellow peach (Red Baron)
This is the 2nd time this tree has offered fruit since we bought it. The first year we got the tree it and several others were hit by the stone fruit beetle. A type of boring beetle that is hard to detect until it's too late. I lost 2 trees and nearly lost this one. It was cut down to a mere 7 inch stuml that wasn't infected. Since then it has recovered to a 6 foot tall (and growing) tree and is starting to produce fruits.
Blackberry
This pot has 3 blackberry bushes, and they are losing their minds. They are loaded with berries that are very sweet. Right behind them is my Boysenberry which is physically about 7-8 feet long and is loaded with berries as well. My raspberries (both red and golden) are slower this year which is fine.
Grape (variety unknown for now)
I used to have 17 grape vines of various sizes but when the drought kicked in and the harsh heart wave struck back to back I lost all but one. This lone survivor was under my ash tree which sheltered it from the weather. Now I have 3 grape vines as I recently acquired 2 Concord grapes (not shown here).
Golden Nugget
My newest addition to my citrus collection. A very sweet, easy peel tangerine that we carry at my job. I was shocked to see one for sale at my local nursery and immediately had to get one. It's a baby at only a foot and a half tall but will one day be up to 7 feet to match my Murcott and Dancy tangerines.
Strawberries~
I have 3 varieties of strawberries and about 140 plants in clusters of 4-10. They are in both hanging pots and a massive bed and produce about a pound of strawberries at a time. They have such rich flavor and super sweet.
All my berry plants except for my blackberry are in shade houses I built that have bird netting surrounding them to keep the birds and squirrels from eating them. Shade houses are a must now due to the summer heat and I plan on building more as my ankle allows.

As a resident brown thumb, and beginner gardener I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to invest in perennials.
Yes it takes longer for a perennial plant to mature, (about 2 to 3 years if it's in a pot) but you can definitely grow annuals while you wait and won't even notice, I am TELLING you it is so so worth it guys trust me.
You'll have Fruits/nuts/berries/herbs/leafy greens for years to come after one install and very minimal upkeep.
Perennials also tend to be hardier and more forgiving when it comes to beginner gardener's in my experience as well.
My method is to always purchase 1-2 perennial plants On Sale for every 5-8 annuals i plan on growing that year. It may be a little expensive if ur just starting out, so 1 perennial + 3-ish annuals would suffice.
Plants do well when they're companion planted so it saves u time, energy, and pesticides to get recommended combinations.
My first year didnt count, I only planted a solid block of irish potatoes of the same variety. It was a plague of bugs and disease. Don't do that, always get Companion Plant combos.
So let's go over a 4 year garden plan to get an idea, when you know what you're doing.
The 1st year I started with: a blackberry bush kit. The kit had 2 blackberry plants in it, I got it from Sams Club. I planted them in cheap plastic pots.
-a grapevine kit (Red seedless and Concord pair I also from the same Sams club). I didn't know what a mycellium network was so I thought the roots molded and threw them away, I still feel the sting from that waste but i was able to buy a Disease resistant grape variety online and plant it in the same pot. But dont be like me.
-And for my annuals that year I went with a salsa garden combo kit (peppers, cilantro, tomatoes, basil) that I got from Lowes. I harvested the salsa ingredients that whole summer.
-The second year
i bought an Italian plum tree, and for my annuals, I planted a Salad kit.
By that time, the Blackberries were mature and I was able to harvest blackberries for the first time.
This year, the 3rd year I've expanded my kitchen garden to include a salsa garden, and the 3 sisters combo (squash, beans and corn planted in the same place).
The grapevine I planted is now mature and will give me grapes in the late summer.
I'm on my second year of blackberries.
The Plum tree will be ready next year. And I haven't decided on what to plant yet.
The fourth year It will probably be a greek salad combo kit (tomatoes, red onion, basil, parsley, garlic) with a tea garden kit (rosemary, lemon balm, chamomile, lavender, mint). By this time My plum tree will be mature and I will harvest my first year of plums, my third year of blackberries, and my second year of grapes. And for my two new perennials, I will go with two apple trees for $10 each online.
By That Time I will harvest my 3rd year of blackberries, my 2nd year of grapes and my 1st year of italian plums.
So that's how it works!
Grapes, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries are cheap and widely available from big box stores during planting season, whereas fruit trees are cheaper and healthier when ordered online outside of planting season but pre-ordered for the next year, in my experience.
(this could be berry bushes, a fruit tree, a nut tree, a fruit vine, or a perennial herb you just have to shop around) They mature faster when you plant it in a pot, and you grow however many annuals you want that growing season.
I'm so focused on the routine spring radishes and summer tomatoes, that two adhd business days (seasons) later and boom
"now I have fresh blackberries this season too."
"Oh what's this? Now I have grapes to go along with this year's harvest"
COCAINE can't beat that high, check your growing zone and buy that f*cking dwarf tree.

I think I’m going to add some chocolate vine and grapevine to my balcony garden. It’s potted, so the chocolate vine won’t be able to spread by roots and since I’ll be harvesting the seed pods it won’t spread.
So what I want to start with
Chocolate Vine
Blueberry
Strawberry
Various herbs
Various flowers
Green beans
Broccoli
Cantaloupe
Carrots
Lettuce
Sweet peppers
Potato
Tomato
Summer squash
A few flower vines
Mushrooms
Eventually I plan to include
Blackberry
Raspberry
Lingonberry
Currants
Grapes
Honeyberry
Goji berry
Gooseberry
Pawpaw (there’s a compact variety that I found. We’ll se how it grows)
Figs
Dwarf lemon
Dwarf orange
Container apple
Kidney beans
Cabbage
Cucumber
Eggplant
Watermelon
Onions
Peas
Hot peppers
Garlic
Radish
Other squash types
Spinach
Califlower
Dwarf cherry
Dwarf pomegranate
Ground cherry
Other stuff as I find it
But I’m not even starting on the other stuff til after I move next year. Cause there’s only so many plants I have a desire to move and my current apartment is a grump about having anything but chairs on the balcony and get upset with the two potted bushes I got. And I don’t want to deal with them
If you know of something particularly pretty of edible that can withstand hot summers or low light indoors that I haven’t heard of let me know. I only recently discovered chocolate vine and I love the appearance and I’m excited to try the seed pods. They supposedly smell of chocolate and taste like tapioca pudding.

moving to a place with no hoa is so healing. it's so wild to live in a neighborhood that feels like actual people live in it. there's people growing sweet corn in their front yards, grape vines winding through metal fences. the sidewalks are covered in childrens' chalk drawings and faded hopscotch games.
one house i look forward to seeing on my walks is the one whose yard is absolutely covered in statues of animals and planters bursting with yarrow flowers, because there's no rules about how many flowers pots you can have or what decorations you're allowed to put where
meanwhile back at my mom's house they were actually debating banning families with children from buying homes there because there were some kids playing in the neighborhood and they MOVED someone's metal flowers >:(

I think a good first step is to notice what edibles and natives are already incorporated into landscaping, and just ignored. Here, for example, commercial landscapers plant our native evergreen huckleberry, which has much to recommend it, both as a "landscape" plant and edible: evergreen, easy care, subtle flowers, berries that ripen long after others, native as mentioned so supporting native animal species, tasty, humans and others enjoy the fruits. Yaupon holly isn't native here, but it's still used and is non-invasive while providing caffeine and theobromine(!), evergreen, pleasantly bland looking for fitting right into whatever landscape already exists. People plant rosemary, sage, sweet bay, lavender, etc for aesthetics but they're all very tasty too, obviously. Elderberries are gorgeous, and used all the time. My city planted chestnuts, and a lot of people go and forage for them (more so during bad economic times, but still). Also things that are food crops, but don't look like food crops: sunchokes, a species of daylily, camas, rhubarb, artichokes, cardoon, native strawberries, etc. Asparagus is a really neat looking plant. Scarlet runner beans are beautiful, and attract hummingbirds, while also making beans. Snow peas are also very pretty vines.
For vacant/neglected land, it's great to learn what invasives, weeds, and tough & abundant natives are edible. Giant knotweed, Himalayan blackberries, yarrow, etc fill-in-your-plants-here. Also it's great to go around pulling out invasive species because people will just think you're a really committed environmentalist, and you can harvest other edibles while you're at it. Be doubly sure about the land history though, don't want to unknowingly be picking from a superfund site! And for goodness sake, be sure of your ID! I've seen people mistake Oregon grape (native) for English holly (invasive) before, and you don't want to be that person.
With tubers/roots especially, you need to know the history of your soil and/or get a soil test for heavy metals. There are ways of improving polluted soil, and certain plants/parts of plants have less or no contamination. Cornell has a pdf available for free titled "Soil Contaminants and Best Practices for Healthy Gardens" which has a lot of good information, please do read it if you're gardening or foraging in urban areas.
From experience, landlords often have no clue and don't care if things are grown in pots/incorporated into existing landscaping. A big pot with Swiss chard, lettuce, kale, etc can look pretty aesthetic. Apartment complex often have edible invasives and/or the above mentioned edible and/or native plants- and nobody picks them.
You can also learn to graft, and graft fruit bearing varieties onto existing ornamental varieties- crab apples, pears, cherries, plums, etc.
A lot of people just straight up ignore plants, and a lot of people have no clue what food looks like if it's not in a store or restaurant. Use this to your advantage. I have seen landscapers look at a plant that clearly doesn't belong (invasive spurge laurel, for example, which is neither a surge nor a laurel), or is growing up through another (hazelnut through a rhody), and just completely ignore it, watering, fertilizing, and pruning them just like the rest. The ones most likely to do this are the ones that "prune" everything to be a cube or sphere though, so keep that in mind. What can still produce food when whacked into a cube? A few things. Also, look for the edges and backs, and places where the landscapers let things slide a little because they figure the clients won't ever look there.
Another big thing that gets ignored is that a single fruit tree often provides much more fruit than a small family will reasonably eat, and often a tree was planted literally decades ago and the current residents don't care about it's fruit. I've gotten loads of figs, apples, pears, grapes, etc just by asking- or by offering to make them a fruit crumble from their fruit tree if they let me pick as much as I want. Back alleys get invaded by out of control raspberries, blackberries, walnuts, etc.
@guerrilla gardeners, solarpunks and plantarchists of all stripes we need to make a good guide to growing food stealthy style
i'm talking growing in rental properties without alerting the landlord, growing on vacant/unused land, stuff like that

home by heart series (2019) Chalk pastel, and ballpoint pen (for fruitless return)
individual titles: Overripe in a hazy home fruitless return welcome back // to a home // you can never return to
---
Partly inspired by The Fall of Home by Los Campesinos!! had that song repeating nonstop while creating this series haha ough its so good
one of my most sentimental series... Hoo boy. I think this was these were the first art pieces I made for my ib art class. Here's the story of its creation:
Initial planning and uh unexpected progression INCLUDING the making of an entirely different art series in the process:
All throughout highschool I missed the townhouse I moved from, which wasn't terribly far from where I ended up living during highschool, but it certainly wasn't mine anymore. I initially wanted to illustrate my old townhome from memory, and then get permission from the new owners to take photos of a few parts of the house I'd illustrated, to show the changes and the inconsistency of memory. Feels very ambitious to me now I think haha but in some ways I was much bolder in highschool than I am now, for better or worse.
So well, the owners said no lol. Fair enough lmao
But! I could still do the first part, draw from memory. And I thought, "I can still take photos of the outside area around the townhouse..."
So I went to visit my old childhood home with my camera. And immediately was completely fucking stunned and sidetracked to see construction happening in the forested area right by it. Not active construction mind, just that there were parked excavators in the middle of the space n trees already cut down.
And that's... actually how I ended up photographing the War-torn photo series! There wasn't do not enter tape or anything or fences So I kinda. figured. it was ok. cough
so after that fuckin emotional experience. I went back to my original task. Went up to my old townhome and took some photos but mostly... Mostly I just looked.
There was a golden rose on the stairs leading up to the door. Everything felt so different and alien, so many new plants in the garden, a tomato plant on the balcony, the blinds all closed. But I recognized the golden rose, because it was one we had planted, still in our pot, that we had left behind. The new owners had kept it.
It was so familiar, and it was glowing in the sunlight. But it kinda made everything else around it look all the more distant from the home I remembered.
So... Instead of photographs I just drew everything from memory. the last trio welcome back, to a home, you can never return to are the parts of my visit that stuck with me most.
Overripe, fruitless return, and in a hazy home:
God this story is long! Overripe features the grape tree from my elementary school that was cut down while I was still there in grade... 5? "Joanna grapes don't grow on trees" yea yea I know; we called it the grape tree because it was a grape vine that had completely taken over a large tree in the centre of a bunch of bramble bushes behind a fence, and was climbing even wider to scale the neighbouring pine trees. It was the meeting spot for me and my friends for a long time during recess. I loved that tree to bits. I was devastated when they felled it
in its place is a firehall, featured in fruitless return. Which is important! But augh god. makes my child heart grieve still.
in a hazy home is the part that adhered most to the original concept: it's the memory of my townhome from memory, featuring the front of my home (with the golden rose on the steps!), blurring into the balcony with my cat apple, and then my room, as viewed from my childhood bed.
wip photos:
more tidbits:
I don't usually use chalk pastels, but I felt its fuzziness fit well for the concept. I also paid attention to the colours, trying to choose appropriate ones to convey the mood of each piece.

I want to go off about my garden because I’m an old woman so deal with my ranting please.
I transplanted an English variety grape vine from our old house where it was kinda tragic into our new garden and it’s gone APESHIT. Like I think it’ll bear fruit next year, and I wasn’t expecting that at all. I guess it’s enjoying being in the soil here more than the old house.
We had an ancient oak tree in our old garden (pre 1600s in age) which was GORGEOUS but it leached all the good from the soil so we couldn’t plant anything at all.
We’ve got a cottage garden now and HOLY SHIT I CAN GROW SO MUCH FRUIT.
I got a fucktonne of buffalosun tomatoes last year from just one growbag and this year I’ve gone freaking ham on the edible plants.
I just sat on the wall and had a look at all my little strawberries and all my little fruit bushes and patio trees in their little pots, and my rhubarb and my lettuce in its hanging baskets and I wanted to have a cry.
Idk I feel like us middle aged fuckers just want to grow things, we just want to sit with our plants and be happy.
I love that for us.

Oh dear, that’s an unfortunate situation. The situation surrounding Grape Soda has changed dramatically though since inside initially messaged you. The image I sent you was them of a few days old freshly emerged from the pot. This is them now.
As you can see puberty hit them rather hard. The unique circumstances of their birth along with his siblings have meant they have all radically changed as they developed into maturity . In grape sodas case whatever combination of hybridization and atavism that has taken place in them has created emergent abilities that aren’t fully understood yet. In his case as he developed he grew an extending vine from his head and began to develop other fruiting bodies each conscious and varied in personality . While they’re still connected to the vine it appears that they are connected telepathically in a similar way a Standard Eggacute and that connection appears to have resolved whatever issue Grape Soda was having emotionally. though it isn’t without it’s failings occasionally the fruiting heads fall off and die so there have been incidences in the few months time Spand we’re all of the extra heads have fallen off and grape soda had reverted to his previous withdrawn behaviors, but the heads do grow back with time. There’s so much more about them now that we simply don’t understand and I don’t know if it would be ethical to introduce a standard Exeggcute to them as a possible extension of the collective. I simply don’t know what might happen. Though I wouldn’t mind another opinion on it.
Hello Ellisa , do you have any solitary or incomplete groups of Exeggcute interested in being adopted? Particularly ones looking for another to join their collective? Recently I grew A very… unique oddish i’ve been calling Grape soda
I think the term variant and hybrid may both be applicable to him. I am under the impression that seeds I grew him from likely come from a flower pollinated by an Exeggutor . Compared to his siblings he is very withdrawn, and based on appearances I think it’s because he’s not part of a psychic collective like a Exeggcute. So I’m looking to adopt a group that would be willing to take him in. Do you think you have any that would be interested?
Hmm, I may have one, however I'd like to evaluate Grape Soda first if possible, and introduce him to the group slowly. The clutch I have has rejected all of the mock eggs and baby psychic types we've tried to introduce. They aren't ready for adoption, and I'm not sure if they ever will be honestly, but it is worth a shot!
