Remembering David Crosby 1941-2023
Sad news today that musician David Crosby has died at 81. He was a member of The Byrds during their golden era of 1964-67 and he returned from 1972-73 and various reunions thereafter. They had a ton of classics like “Mr. Tambourine Man”, “So You Want to be a Rock ‘n’ Roll Star” and “Turn! Turn! Turn!”. Then he was a part of the folk supergroup Crosby, Stills and Nash, which later evolved into Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young when Neil Young joined. As a longtime Neil Young fan, I had an appreciation for Crosby’s music, songwriting and vocals. CSN&Y’s 1970 album Déjà Vu is one of my favorites of that era. “Teach Your Children”, “Ohio”, “Woodstock”, and “Our House” are all classics! Crosby was also tight with The Beatles: he stopped by the studio when they recorded “Lovely Rita” and partied with Ringo Starr.
Crowe and Crosby
Crosby also did some acting, notably in Hook and as a voiceover on The Simpsons. But if you really want to know the story of Crosby, check out the 2019 documentary David Crosby: Remember My Name produced and narrated by Cameron Crowe.
The link above is the obit from Variety.

Actually wait I have more questions! (Concerning the lxg au you have) (if you want to answer)
-how does Jekyll’s potion work in this? What are the other League member’s perception of the whole thing?
-is Jekyll usually Hyde or himself? Or is it more of a 50/50 split? Or just a whatever the situation calls for thing?
-do other gothic lit sources exist in the world despite not actually being in the League? If so, will they ever serve a story purpose?
-character pronouns/identities?
-do you have any fun facts about the characters that don’t really serve a purpose other than just being fun facts? (Ex: favorite foods, how they take their coffee, just little things like that)
-the potion alters the prefrontal cortex’s functions, triggering an altered state in which Jekyll loses his inhibitions, self control, and moral compass. Hyde has become the dominant form at this point, so while the potion is used to transform into either form, it is basically what keeps Jekyll as himself, and if he doesn’t take it regularly, he turns into Hyde- and Hyde doesn’t really like turning into Jekyll, so…
-it depends! Around the main team, who knows the secret, Hyde spends most of the time as himself, but if they have to go anywhere hyde would be too much of a nuisance they take the potion and only turn into them during the mission proper. The League is more comfortable around Jekyll, for obvious reasons, but as they get to meet Hyde they begin to treat him more as a person and less as a trained animal. He does hold it against them but honestly, they do like having people who don’t care about the thing.
-yeah! Most of them, in fact. Hyde personally knows a few, and has a bone to pick with Erik the Phantom. I have decided Adam and Carmilla will be part of the League, anyway, though not as part of the main group lead by Mina. And Dorian used to be a member of Mina’s team, but… well, he was a double agent, so it doesn’t really count. Dorian is also Mina and Ed’s ex boyfriend (awkward!). I think that it’s easier to list the gothic stories that aren’t “real” in Candyverse so: Sweeney Todd (fictional character, and a franchise at this point with theatre adaptations galore), Varney the Vampire (fictional character, liked ironically by teenagers), the whole Beetle thing (fictional character, popular but in the way the James Cameron Avatar movies are popular)
-giggles
Mina Murray Harker: bisexual, trans woman, she/they
Irene Adler: lesbian, trans woman, she/her
Captain Nemo: gay, agender, no pronouns
Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde: bisexual, trans man, he/they/(it)
Harlow Griffin: aroace, trans man, he/him
Alice L. Byrd: pan aro, non-binary woman, she/fae
-Mina prefers non-fiction books to fiction books; Jekyll/Hyde hates anything peppermint flavored; Nemo is an excellent cook and humblebrags so much about it it’s insane; Irene is divorced; Griffin doesn’t like being referred to as his first name; Alice keeps three rabbits as pets.

Arrivals & Departures David Van Cortlandt Crosby 14 August 1941 – 19 January 2023
David Van Cortlandt Crosby was an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter. In addition to his solo career, he was a founding member of both the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash.
Crosby joined the Byrds in 1964. They got their first number-one hit in April 1965 with a cover of "Mr. Tambourine Man" by Bob Dylan. Crosby appeared on the Byrds' first five albums and produced the original lineup's 1973 reunion album. In 1967 he joined Buffalo Springfield on stage at the Monterey Pop Festival, which contributed to his dismissal from the Byrds. He subsequently formed Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1968 with Stephen Stills (of Buffalo Springfield) and Graham Nash of the Hollies. After the release of their debut album CSN won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist of 1969. Neil Young joined the group for live appearances, their second concert being Woodstock, before recording their second album Déjà Vu. Meant to be a group that could collaborate freely, Crosby and Nash recorded three gold albums in the 1970s, while the core trio of CSN remained active from 1976 until 2016. CSNY reunions took place in each decade from the 1970s through the 2000s.
Songs Crosby wrote or co-wrote include "Lady Friend", "Everybody's Been Burned", "Why", and "Eight Miles High" with the Byrds and "Guinnevere", "Wooden Ships", "Shadow Captain", and "In My Dreams" with Crosby, Stills & Nash. He wrote "Almost Cut My Hair" and the title track "Déjà Vu" for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's 1970 album of the same name. He is known for having employed alternative guitar tunings and jazz influences. He released six solo albums, five of which charted. Additionally, he formed a jazz-influenced trio with his son James Raymond and guitarist Jeff Pevar in CPR. Crosby's work with the Byrds and CSNY has sold over 35 million albums.
Crosby was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: once for his work in the Byrds and again for his work with CSN. Five albums to which he contributed are included in Rolling Stone's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, three with the Byrds and two with CSN(Y). He was outspoken politically and was sometimes depicted as emblematic of the 1960s' counterculture.
Crosby is the subject of the 2019 documentary David Crosby: Remember My Name, which was produced by Cameron Crowe.
Crosby died following a long illness on January 19, 2023.

Lennox Claudius Lewis CM CBE (September 2, 1965) is a boxing commentator and former boxer who competed from (1989-2003). He is a three-time world heavyweight champion, a two-time lineal champion, and the last heavyweight to hold the undisputed championship. Holding dual British and Canadian citizenship, he represented Canada as an amateur at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics; he won a gold medal in the super-heavyweight division.
He won several regional heavyweight championships, including the European, British, and Commonwealth titles. After winning his first 21 fights, he defeated Donovan Ruddock to take over the #1 position in the WBC rankings. He was declared WBC heavyweight champion that year after Riddick Bowe gave up the title to avoid defending it against him. He defended the title three times before an upset knockout loss to Oliver McCall. He avenged the loss in a rematch to win back the vacant WBC title.
Two fights against Evander Holyfield saw him become an undisputed heavyweight champion by unifying his WBC title with Holyfield’s WBA and IBF titles, as well as the vacant IBO title. The WBA stripped him of his title when he chose to face Michael Grant instead of mandatory challenger John Ruiz. The IBF stripped him of their title when he chose not to face their mandatory challenger Chris Byrd.
He was knocked out by Hasim Rahman in an upset, but this defeat was avenged. He defeated Mike Tyson in one of the most highly anticipated fights in boxing history. He was awarded the Ring magazine heavyweight title. He defeated Vitali Klitschko in a brutal and bloody encounter. He vacated his remaining titles and retired from boxing.
He is regarded by many as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time, and one of the greatest British fighters of all time.
He was born in West Ham, London to Jamaican parents. He attended Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute, where he excelled in Canadian football, soccer, and basketball. He helped the school’s AAA basketball team win the Ontario provincial championship.
He married Violet Chang, a former Miss Jamaica runner-up. They have three children. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Reddit is Trash
I don’t like Reddit. It is a garbage site. The When Calls The Heart subreddit is barely active (that's why I rarely share anything from there), so I was surprised to see these topics posted. Sadly they had the kind of responses I expected.
I'm not crazy about the phrase "turn her into a lesbian", but I get what they mean. When they introduced Fiona, TPTB probably didn't intend for her to be a lesbian. But that was the old regime and with the new regime, anything is possible.
Lesbians aren't trailblazing go-getters I guess🤷♀️
"No while Brian Byrd and Michael Landon Jr have breath in their body."
🤔hmmmm...
(I'm kidding)
"It's kinda refreshing to see a woman who's not chasing love but following their passions/interests, who wants to use her brain and make a career for herself."
Why not both?
(I actually have no problem with these responses, I'm teasing a little :P)
Really not happy to see those downvotes.
The WCTH subreddit is mostly Lucabeth fans. Does this mean I can start insinuating that they're bigots the same way they said people who were happy Elizabeth and Nathan got together were racist against the Chinese?
Lesbians didn't exist back in the 1920's. Everyone knows homosexuality was created in a Russian lab in the 1950's to weaken America during the space race.
BTW, if you believe what Pink Peonies105 said, I have terrible news for you.
Second topic on the subject by Fosh_n_chops (which is a great name)
Leave Reddit and come over here and I promise it will not be an unpopular opinion.
“Every” secular TV show.
Hallmark had a Christmas movie with two gay male love interests over a year ago but did they ever make another movie like that? With lesbians? Don’t worry, the big bad lesbians aren’t going to be taking over your comfy TV show any time soon.
And if they do, just go to GAC and watch Candice Cameron Bure’s shitty movies. Nothing’s more fun than watching a has-been, bitter 50 year old bigot try to hold on to the made up title of “Queen of Christmas”.
🤦♀️One lipstick lesbian isn’t going to turn your show “woke”.
Also apparently there are no Christian homosexuals. Not now and not in the 1920’s.
The discussion then goes off topic into a back and forth about the origins of the word “woke” and religion and how the world totally went to shit when they got rid of the bible, one of the best selling books in the world. Makes sense.

From a Whisper to a Scream
...to a yawn.
Memo to horror filmmakers: do not invoke the names of H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe unless you have the chops to stand the comparison. Writer-director Jeff Burr and his co-writers clearly do not, as evidenced by their work on FROM A WHISPER TO A SCREAM aka THE OFFSPRING (1987, Prime and YouTube). It’s an omnibus film with two half-decent stories and two strictly from hunger, with a cast you feel were sentenced to it as some demented form of community service. In the framing story, reporter Susan Tyrrell (playing a seemingly normal person and doing it well) visits Oldfield, TN, town historian Vincent Price after his serial killer niece’s execution. He insists the woman turned evil because of the town and tells Tyrrell four stories to illustrate that. Aging nebbish Clu Gulager obsesses over a co-worker (Atlanta’s own Megan McFarland) so much he kills her and violates her corpse, only to learn the fruits of necrophilia. When some angry marks shoot con artist Terry Kiser, he flees to the swamp where he meets a conjure man (Harry Caesar) with the secret of eternal life. Carny operator Rosalind Cash keeps the acts in “Lovecraft’s Traveling Amusements” in check through voodoo. And sadistic Union soldier Cameron Mitchell is captured by feral Southern war orphans. The first two simply plod, and Gulager’s story has next to no atmosphere (probably because the film had next to no budget), though there’s nice byplay between him and his invalid sister (his real-life wife, Miriam Byrd-Nethery). But the carnival story feels original and has Cash, who can turn even this film’s leaden dialogue into Shakespeare. And it’s fun seeing Mitchell’s utterly evil character get his comeuppance at the hands of a bunch of kids. The film also features Gordon Paddison (McFarlad’s ex- and Atlanta’s own Dr. Frank N. Furter), Terrence Knox and Angelo Rossitto, along with cameos by Martine Beswick and Lawrence Tierney.

David Crosby, Byrds and Crosby, Co-Founders of Stills & Nash, Dies at 81
Singer-songwriter and guitarist David Crosby is the founder of two of the most popular and influential rock bands of the 1960s: The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Nash (later Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young). was a founding member, his representative said. he was 81 years old. No motive of loss of life has been announced.
His death came as a surprise to those who followed his highly active Twitter account. One of Crosby's last tweets the day before he died was a typical joking comment about heaven.
"I heard this place is overrated... it's cloudy."
Former CSNY partner Graham Nash, who has been estranged from Crosby in recent years when their groups have gone their separate ways, paid tribute on his social media. "I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my friend David Crosby," Nash wrote. “People tend to focus on the explosiveness of our relationship, but what David and I have always treasured above all is the music we create together, the sounds we discover together. , and the sheer joy of the deep friendships we shared, over the years.
“He left a huge void of character and talent in this world. He spoke his heart, heart and passion through his beautiful music and left an incredible legacy. My heart goes out to his wife Jan, son Django and all the people he touched in this world."
Eight months ago, Crosby announced he was done with his live performance, saying, "I'm too old to do it anymore. I don't have stamina. I have no strength." But he recorded as hard as he could, said:
"I was making records really fast. …I'm 80 now, so I'm going to die soon. That's how it works. December when he changed his mind:
“Can I say it? … Maybe we should form another band and go to a live show.”

In recent years, when CSNY seems irrevocably estranged, it's clear that what Crosby wants above all else is to reconcile with these bandmates. That didn't happen, but Stephen Stills said in his own statement on Thursday night that their relationship ended peacefully.
Stills wrote, via a series of tweets, “This morning I read a newspaper quote attributed to composer Gustav Mahler that made me pause for a moment:
“Death entered the room on gentle cat feet. I should have known something had happened.
“David and I have hit our heads a lot of times over the years, but mostly stares, but it still numbs our skulls,” Stills continued. "I'm happy to be at peace with him. He is certainly a great musician, and his sense of harmony is second to none. The glue that binds us together as our voices soar, like Icarus, toward the sun. I am deeply saddened by his passing and will miss him immensely.

Crosby returned to the public consciousness strongly in 2019 with a theatrical documentary, “David Crosby:
Remember My Name,” narrated and produced by Cameron Crowe. Crosby opened up about his own death in the film, and Crowe pointed that out in an interview with Variety, saying that the singer thought about ""telling the truth in the last big interview that he did. I will probably never do"... In the second Question from the first interview we did with Crosby," Crowe noted, "he immediately brought up the question 'Time is simple. the last money eyes as if he were on a hospital bed. He's not in a hospital bed at all! Maybe it's all a hoax, as he says at the end. You do not know.
Along with bandmates Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman, and Michael Clarke, Crosby set the template for L.A.'s '60s. folk-rock in the Byrds during his tumultuous 1964-67 tenure in the band.
In association with Buffalo Springfield's Stephen Stills and Hollies' Graham Nash amid the glitzy Laurel Canyon scene of late '60s Los Angeles, Crosby launched CS&N, the 1968 multi-platinum debut that ushered in rock supergroup era.
The addition of another unstable member, Stills' former colleague in Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young, added to the commercial appeal of the action. However, an ongoing conflict of egos within Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, fueled by the rock excesses of the time, toppled the band in the '70s, despite the members' It has regrouped sporadically over the years as a recording and touring unit. Crosby's most stable relationship is with Nash:
The duo recorded and toured regularly into the new millennium.
While he was never a lead songwriter for the Byrds or CSN&Y, Crosby was an integral part of the dense mix-and-match frontline that has spawned many of both bands' hits.
A hedonistic embodiment of the sex-drug-rock-roll lifestyle of the 60s, he has struggled with addiction for years. His sensational 1982 arrest in Texas for drug and weapons trafficking landed him five months in prison in 1986. Devastated by years of cocaine and alcohol abuse, he underwent a transplant. Although he never returned to the fame of his early years, Crosby recorded and toured profitably in the 2000s.
Crosby is a kid with Hollywood privileges. He is the son of cinematographer Floyd Crosby, who won an Academy Award for his work in the 1931 F.W. Murnau. He turned to theater and music at an early age.
Dropping out of Santa Barbara City College to pursue a career in music, he entered the commercial folk music scene through a brief membership of Baxter's Balladeers, a Limeliters-style unit run by the house. Well-known composer-arranger organization.
He started working in folk clubs in Los Angeles as a soloist; During a gig at the Troubadour, his sharp tenor caught the eye of Jim Dickson, an interior engineer at Richard Bock's World Pacific Records in Los Angeles. Dickson began recommending Crosby as a solo artist, but these sessions eventually led to the formation of a band.
The young singer-songwriter scene of L.A. then gather around Folk Den, the centerpiece of the Santa Monica Avenue club, The Bard. One evening in 1964, stubborn Crosby stepped into an exchange attended by two young, traveling folk singers. McGuinn (who was then known by his birth name Jim; he quickly changed his name to Roger after joining the Subud spiritual movement) previously worked with urban folklore Limeliters and Chad Mitchell Trio, and met Crosby at a tour in Santa Barbara. stop at the previous action. Clark was once a member of another deprived folk group, the New Christy Minstrels. Although McGuinn was skeptical of Crosby's oversized and obstinate personality, he was still enamored with The Beatles and considered forming a new band; Crosby's free spin at World Pacific led to McGuinn, Crosby, and Clark's first lessons under the collective direction of Jet Set.
As Beefeaters, the trio released a flop single on Elektra Records, but quickly reformed as a full-fledged rock group that reflected the influence of The Beatles' 1964 debut, 'A Hard Day's Night'. . The lineup is complete with the addition of rookie bassist Chris Hillmen, former mandolinist of bluegrass-oriented The Hillmen Pacific World band, and unskilled but photogenic drummer Michael Clarke.
Renamed the Byrds in an apparent imitation of the Fab Four, the band was signed to Columbia Records in late 1964 based on the promotional efforts of Dickson, who now manages the group. Immediately, well-connected Dickson pushed his number to cover a new song written by one of his friends, folk music star Bob Dylan.

R.I.P. David Crosby, 81
I am very saddened by the passing of David Crosby, although it was not unexpected. Even in 2019, in Cameron Crowe’s absorbing documentary Remember My Name, he grappled with his mortality. Most retrospective writing about Crosby focuses on his difficult personality and breakups with famous band mates in the Byrds and CSN(Y), but the postmortem remembrances and testimonials from those with whom he…

Sound Bites Goes to the Movies: "David Crosby: Remember My Name"
Toward the end of "Remember My Name," David Crosby sits in a dressing room checking his blood sugar - he's a diabetic and a liver-transplant and drug-addiction survivor who has eight stents in his heart - and predicts he'll have another heart attack (either his third or fourth, he's not sure) within two years.
The scene was filmed about two years ago - and Crosby is still alive, kicking and making music - so that attempt at clairvoyance was thankfully wrong. But his other prediction - that he'll never again make music with Roger McGuinn, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash or Neil Young because "they hate my guts" - still, sadly, holds.
Less a documentary and more an extended interview by producer Cameron Crowe, who first spoke with Crosby on CSNY's infamous 1974 tour, the 95-minute film begins with Crosby heading out on tour, and stopping by Laurel Canyon haunts from his past, and ends with Crosby coming home from the tour, having had to cancel a few dates after his voice gave out and admitting he can't do several nights in a row like in the old days.
In between, what you see is an old man - Crosby was 76 at the time and is 78 now - looking back at a life of music, recklessness and ruin left in his wake. He's regretful, scared to die and determined to make as much new music as he can with the time he has left because music, is, he says: "All I've got to offer."
Crosby does the majority of the talking, which leaves "Remember My Name" lacking in context. Friends (or former friends) including Young, Nash and Jackson Browne - Stills is not included at all - speak only in archival interviews, some dating back 30 years.
Even Crosby's Lighthouse and Sky Trails bands - with whom he's made four albums since 2014 and is shown performing with through the film - are ignored. At the very least, their insights could have helped to paint a fuller picture of who the David Crosby of winter is.
McGuinn and fellow former Byrd Chris Hillman give contemporary interviews, limited to their decision to fire Crosby for his rambunctiousness, his onstage political rants and his general ego; Crosby doesn't blame them.
The firing scene and another in which Crosby - on the run after years of self-inflicted legal and drug problems left him on an FBI wanted list - returns to his beloved, but neglected and falling-apart, schooner, the Mayan, before turning himself in, are depicted via cartoons that fit the film about as well as a replacement would fit inside of CSNY, making for "Remember My Name"'s only weak moments.
All of the touchstones are hit. Crosby's youth; the Bryds catching Dylan and Beatles fevers; CSN's first time singing together; Christine Hinton’s death; the making of If I Could Only Remember My Name; sailing; Crosby's cocaine and heroin addictions and subsequent imprisonment; his comeback; and CSN's coming apart after a tuneless performance of "Silent Night" at the White House that includes a priceless image of the Obamas cringing at the inharmonious sounds coming from rock's most-famous harmony group.
Crosby is brutally honest throughout, owning every bit of damage he's done and wearing his regret on his sleeve if not proudly, then with dignity. He is a man on a mission - after going more than two decades without releasing an album - to squeeze out every bit of music he can before his lifeforce burns out.
And Crosby and his wife, Jan, know that time is coming.
"I might just disappear," she said, contemplating the inevitable when Crosby returns home from another tour that left her fearing she'd never see her husband again.
When Crosby is gone, he has but one wish - a wish that this movie is designed to help make come true:
Remember his name.

The catch? A sadistic initiation ritual that goes from depraved to deadly over the course of forty-eight booze-and-blood-soaked hours.
