After being attacked on the street, a young man enlists at a local dojo, led by a charismatic and mysterious sensei, in an effort to learn how to defend himself from future threats.

Masculinity. The toxic kind. Darkly funny.

While not necessarily quickly, this escalated quite a bit. The violence took me by surprise. Re-watching the trailer afterwards I notice there are hints of it. It is still insofar misleading as it overemphasises the comedic part. Which isn't a big problem, but I think it helps to be prepared for it.

Pledge will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on April 2 via Scream Factory. No word on special features at this time. The film is currently available on VOD via IFC Midnight.

The horror-thriller is directed by Daniel Robbins (Uncaged). Zachery Byrd, Aaron Dalla Villa, Phillip Andre Botello, Jesse Pimentel, Zack Weiner (who penned the script), and Cameron Cowperthwaite star.

Freshman social misfits Ethan (Phillip Andre Botello), David (Zack Weiner), and Justin (Zachery Byrd) are desperate to improve their terminally uncool reputations by pledging to one of their university's prestigious Greek houses. When every frat on campus turns them down, they are unexpectedly recruited by a shadowy social club offering them access to an exclusive world of raging parties, eligible coeds, and VIP social status. The catch? A sadistic initiation ritual that goes from depraved to deadly over the course of forty-eight booze-and-blood-soaked hours.
