WEDNESDAY'S WEEKLY POETRY PROMPT: 5/15/24 ~ CAMELBACK SUNSET
CAMELBACK SUNSET © 2024 - G. Smith (BMI) =================== Sitting in Stone Canyon in the shadow of the mountains, Trying not to look at you, afraid of who I’ll see. The sky is golden going blue; the first stars are appearing, And who used to be a couple is now simply you and me.
Oh, Katy you stopped in Phoenix, On your way to I don’t know where, And I took the time to find you, To let you know that I still care.
The times we had together, Back in Tennessee, The hills and hollers were softer there, And cooler too, you must agree.
But I see you’ve made a new life, With a family I’ll never know; So I’m happy for you nonetheless, Though my feelings may not show.
There are many things I wish I’d done, But many more that make me smile. I hope they touch your heart as well, And make my journey worth the miles.
Playing Acey-Deucy like we did back in the day, The sun’s below the valley rim, it’s getting hard to see, Surrounded now by city lights, Now there’s just the two of us, that used to be a we. Now there’s just the two of us, That used to be a we.

Note
ive been rewatching columbo eps on prime video (idk where to get the other season after 7 :c) and i'm just done with A Case of Immunity, the one with the Suarian Kingdom and the whitest middle east guy i've ever seen ? And like. I'm not a fan of that episode, but. I feel like i'm missing a lot of political or historical context for that episode ? And I wanted to know if you knew more. Thank u, I'll get back to my little guy show now.
you're not missing much.
the latter portion of original columbo was marked by an increased desire to show him in radically different contexts--between a man on international waters, an arab diplomat, a IRA liason, a CIA agent, and a mexican matador, it suffices to say columbo got around a little more as time went on. and due to the growing US interest in the middle east throughout the 70s (most of europe's imperialist/colonialist tendrils had vacated, cold war alliances were being made, israel, oil, etc.) i suppose they thought people would want to see something topical. they also didn't want to piss anybody off, so the Very Real Country of Suari it was.
the role of hassan salah was originally intended for ben gazzara, but he was scrapped by the network for being too expensive (much to peter falk's consternation). mine too, really, because though hector elizondo did a fantastic job, i think gazzara would've played a better arab. he was sicillian, but i wouldn't be surprised if he had actual arab heritage, as sicilians very often do. his surname is arabic as hell--غزارة is arabic for "abundance", which ended up as a loanward in italian to mean "noisy".
ultimately though, the middle east is an ethnically and geographically diverse region containing a wide variety of looks and skin tones. for one, i and my entire family are lebanese. my skin is rather pale, my grandfather was tan but had pale blue eyes, my aunt is nearly blonde, etc. so elizondo's countenance may not scream "arab" nearly as much as gazzara's, but levant, maghreb, or gulf--he's not all that unbelievable either.
Tumblr media
funnily enough, in middle ages arabia, those with blue eyes were associated with duplicitous and untrustworthy behavior....
i guess something that does kinda make me roll my eyes is the treatment of the language. to their credit, the characters do speak and write real arabic in the show, albeit...poorly. obviously it's a 70s tv movie, who cares about accurate glottal stops, but they spent like eight grand to rent a learjet for one of the scenes, and the arabic is real and (mostly) intelligible, so clearly somebody translated it. would it have killed them to hire a dialect coach?
Tumblr media
we did get some extremely jewish-sounding arabic out of peter though. so. all is emphatically forgiven
the one thing that truly rubs me the wrong way about the episode is that it's noxiously sympathetic to the american political ethos of the time, which as we well know could do no wrong. watch columbo OWN this EVIL diplomat donned in traditional garb who wants to retain his country's DISGUSTING traditional ways while the new, hip young king who was probably forcefully instituted by american troops in a coup you'll never learn about is COOL and LOVES AMERICA and will lead his oil-filled country on camelback into a beautiful sunset of BEING COOL and LOVING AMERICA. there's NO WAY this could go south. STOP looking at iran NOW
(speaking of which, the state dept. rep who bursts columbo's bubble, kermit morgan, might or might not be a nod to kermit roosevelt jr. who played a central role in the CIA's ousting of iran's mosaddegh in 1953)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...least he's honest
anyway, in retrospect this episode isn't the series' finest moment, but it's a decent watch--and believe me, far and away not the worst treatment of arabs hollywood has thrown at us over the years. i know i'd certainly take a dozen of these over whatever the hell they were churning out post-9/11.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
wallahi i could've forgiven the weird culturally inaccurate bowing if they just put columbo in a keffiyeh...

Arizona Trip 🌵☀️ February 17-23, 2024
I’m a bit late on recapping this trip, but I wanted to document it as it was just so good. Kate @colorado-wildflowers and I planned a trip to Phoenix, AZ to escape the winter blues.
Day 1: We met up with Alex @flowers-justbecause who I had never met before. She was awesome and little did I know how supportive (literally and figuratively) she’d be. We hiked Picketpost Mountain in Superior, AZ. This hike is rated difficult and boy… was it. It wasn’t marked well and there was high elevation which I’ve dealt with pleanty of times before, but I was not prepared for the rock scrambling that ensued. Kate caught some gnarly pictures of Alex and I scaling the mountain and seeing it from her prospective was wild to me (pic #8). There was a point in the climb that I almost was in tears (a first for me), but with the help of Alex and Kate, I was able to move past that. Alex even let me use her shoe as a “rock peg” during some of the climb, and I had just met her! Overall it was such a fun day and I felt badass afterward.
Day 2: We did an awesome hike at Lost Dutchman State Park. This park was so cool with numerous rock formations. This was on Presidents’ Day, and there were many people here. This hike even had a baby waterfall, but due to the temps of the desert, we could barely see it. This hike just had a lot of variety and I loved the loop as we were able to trek downhill afterward. Much needed after the day prior’s tough hike. Afterward, I picked up a coffee mug and magnet at the gift shop. We then got vegan chorizo tacos and relaxed in the hot tub at a spa across the street from our airbnb. Our air bnb host comped us free day passes to the spa due to their condo’s tub being out of service.
Day 3: We went to Saguaro Lake and did paddle boarding! The lake was beautiful. Kate even saw a wild desert pig. I couldn’t get over being in 70s and sunshine in the middle of February. I was truly basking in all its glory. After paddle boarding, we went and saw the most gorgeous sunset at “Hole in the Rock”. Definitely a touristy area, but beautiful and worth doing, nonetheless.
Day 4: We met up with Alex again and did a small hike at White Tank Mountain Regional Park. This place was fully paved and just so well maintained. Kate and Alex did a sunrise hike at Camelback Mountain, so an “easier” hike was perfect. The views did not disappoint. We also saw a bunch of petroglyphs! After that, we had such a wholesome/cute Taylor Swift Eras tour movie night. Alex brought her bracelet-making kits, and we made friendship bracelets. I made a bracelet that said “glorious sunrise” from one of my favorite songs of hers, Happiness.
Tumblr media
Day 5: Our last day consisted of a hike at South Mountain, which is a park 10 minutes from our airbnb! It was the perfect way to end our trip. There were some cool caves (Dead Man’s pass) and amazing views of Phoenix. We then went to the Desert Botanical Garden. I’ve never seen so many cool-looking cactus before. Speaking of which, I got hand-made cactus in their gift shop and added it to my bookshelf. I love picking up cool trinkets on my trips. I found the perfect place for it on my bookshelf.
This trip was seriously everything I wanted it to be and more. Kate did such a fabulous job planning it (she is the desert queen) and I had such a fun time spending the week with her in the sunshine blasting Bright Eyes and Taylor Swift with the windows down. Oh, it was a wonderful splash.

Real Estate Drone Videos Showcasing Phoenix’s Expanding Urban Developments
Real Estate Drone Videos Showcasing Phoenix’s Expanding Urban Developments
Phoenix, one of the fastest-growing cities in the U.S., is in the midst of an urban development boom. From modern high-rises to sprawling residential communities, the city’s landscape is constantly evolving. As the real estate market becomes more competitive, developers and realtors are turning to new and innovative ways to showcase these developments—one of the most powerful tools in their arsenal is drone video production.
In this blog, we’ll explore how real estate drone videos are transforming the way Phoenix’s urban developments are presented and why this technology is a game-changer for both buyers and sellers.
Why Drone Videos Are Perfect for Phoenix Real Estate
Phoenix’s unique topography and desert landscape make it an ideal setting for aerial footage. Drone videos provide an unparalleled view of the city’s expanding urban footprint, allowing potential buyers to get a full sense of the property’s location, nearby amenities, and overall vibe. Here are some key reasons why drone videos are the perfect fit for Phoenix real estate:
Showcasing the City’s Growth Phoenix is experiencing rapid growth, with new commercial and residential projects popping up across the valley. Drone footage can capture the scale and scope of these developments from a bird’s-eye view, providing a dynamic look at how these new projects fit into the larger urban landscape. Whether it's a new high-rise in downtown Phoenix or a master-planned community in the suburbs, drone videos offer an expansive perspective that traditional photography simply can’t match.
Highlighting Unique Features Phoenix’s desert surroundings, modern architecture, and proximity to outdoor recreation areas are major selling points for many buyers. Drone footage can highlight these unique features in a visually compelling way. For example, drone videos can showcase a property’s mountain views, nearby hiking trails, or its proximity to popular areas like Camelback Mountain, Papago Park, or the Salt River.
Visualizing Neighborhood Layouts For prospective buyers, especially those moving from out of town, understanding the layout and flow of a neighborhood is crucial. Drone videos offer an easy way to visualize how a property sits within its surroundings. Are there parks, schools, or shopping centers nearby? How far is it from major highways or public transportation? Aerial footage helps answer these questions by showing a comprehensive view of the surrounding area, something that static images or ground-level video can’t fully capture.
Capturing Phoenix’s Iconic Sunsets and Scenery Phoenix is known for its stunning sunsets and expansive desert skies. Real estate drone videos can take advantage of the natural beauty of the area by filming during “golden hour,” when the lighting is perfect for capturing the warmth and vibrancy of the desert. This adds an extra layer of appeal to the property, making it stand out to potential buyers.
How Drone Videos Benefit Real Estate Marketing
In an increasingly digital real estate market, first impressions are everything. With more buyers starting their home search online, it’s essential to capture their attention quickly—and drone videos can do just that. Here’s how they help boost real estate marketing:
Enhanced Listings Listings that include drone videos tend to stand out more. They give potential buyers a more immersive experience by providing an overview of the property and its surroundings in one seamless package. The combination of sweeping aerial shots and detailed close-ups makes the listing more engaging, increasing the likelihood of attracting serious inquiries.
Engaging Social Media Content Social media is a vital tool in today’s real estate market, and drone videos are highly shareable content that performs well on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. With the visual appeal of aerial footage, these videos tend to receive more views, shares, and engagement than traditional property photos or standard video tours, which helps broaden the reach of a listing.
Building Trust with Out-of-Town Buyers Phoenix’s booming real estate market is attracting buyers from across the country. For those relocating from other states, drone footage can provide a comprehensive look at the property and the surrounding area without the need for an in-person visit. This helps build trust with remote buyers, giving them confidence in their decision to move forward with a purchase.
Highlighting Development Potential Drone videos are not just for showcasing completed properties—they’re also an excellent tool for developers. For new construction projects or land sales, drone footage can capture the potential of a site, offering a clear view of the land’s topography and its proximity to other developments or key infrastructure. This is especially useful for commercial real estate, where location and future development opportunities play a significant role in decision-making.
Best Practices for Real Estate Drone Videos in Phoenix
If you’re considering using drone videos to market your Phoenix real estate listings, here are some best practices to ensure your videos have the maximum impact:
Hire a Professional Drone Operator While drones are more accessible than ever, it’s crucial to hire a professional with the necessary experience and licensing to operate drones commercially. A skilled drone pilot knows how to capture smooth, high-quality footage while adhering to FAA regulations. They’ll also be able to edit the footage into a polished final product that truly highlights the property’s best features.
Capture Key Selling Points Focus on the aspects that set the property apart. Whether it’s the views, the architecture, or the neighborhood amenities, make sure your drone footage captures the elements that are most likely to appeal to buyers. Highlight any nearby points of interest, such as shopping districts, parks, or cultural landmarks, to give potential buyers a sense of what it would be like to live in the area.
Incorporate Ground-Level Shots While aerial footage is impressive, it’s also important to include ground-level shots of the property. A well-rounded real estate video will mix drone footage with traditional interior and exterior views to provide a complete picture of the property.
Optimize for Different Platforms Ensure that your drone videos are formatted correctly for different platforms. A 60-second clip might work well for Instagram, while a longer, more detailed version may be better suited for YouTube or a real estate website. Tailoring your content to each platform will maximize your video’s reach and effectiveness.
Conclusion: Drone Videos Elevate Phoenix Real Estate
As Phoenix continues to grow, real estate drone videos are becoming a must-have for showcasing the city’s expanding urban developments. They provide a unique, immersive way to view properties and their surroundings, giving buyers a comprehensive understanding of what makes each listing special. Whether you’re marketing a high-rise in downtown Phoenix or a residential community in the suburbs, drone videos can set your property apart in a competitive market.
By leveraging drone technology, realtors and developers can not only highlight the beauty and potential of Phoenix’s real estate but also capture the imagination of buyers looking for their next home or investment in this vibrant and rapidly growing city.

In this blog, we will explore how to make the most of your camel safari with a BBQ, the activities you can enjoy, and tips for a memorable trip. Let’s dive into the enchanting world of the Arabian desert and discover why this adventure should be on your must-do list.
What is a Camel Safari with BBQ?
A Camel Safari with BBQ is an immersive desert experience that allows you to explore the vast dunes on camelback, just as Bedouins have done for centuries. The journey culminates in a delightful barbecue feast under the stars, offering a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and gastronomy. This safari is designed to provide a comprehensive desert experience, highlighting the beauty, tranquility, and culinary richness of the region.
Tumblr media
Making the Best Camel Safari with BBQ
Planning Your Trip
To ensure you get the most out of your camel safari with BBQ, it’s essential to plan ahead. Choose a reputable tour operator like Desert Safari in Dubai, which offers well-organized and safe tours. Book your safari in advance to secure your preferred date and time. Consider the season and weather conditions; the cooler months from October to April are ideal for a more comfortable experience.
Selecting the Right Package
Tour operators offer various packages for a Camel Safari with BBQ, ranging from basic to premium options. Basic packages typically include a camel ride and a BBQ dinner, while premium packages may offer additional activities such as dune bashing, sandboarding, and cultural performances. Evaluate the inclusions and select a package that best suits your interests and budget.
Tumblr media
Preparing for the Safari
Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing made of breathable fabrics to stay cool in the desert heat. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential to protect yourself from the sun. In the cooler months, bring a light jacket for the evening.
Footwear: Choose closed-toe shoes or sandals that are comfortable for walking in the sand.
Hydration: Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water before and during the safari. Most tours provide water, but it’s a good idea to bring your own bottle.
Tumblr media
Activities on a Camel Safari with BBQ
Camel Riding
The camel ride is the heart of the safari, offering a serene and unique way to explore the desert. Camels, known as the ships of the desert, are well-adapted to the harsh conditions of the Arabian desert. The gentle swaying motion as you ride allows you to connect with the landscape in a way that modern vehicles cannot replicate. Enjoy the panoramic views of the endless dunes and take in the peaceful atmosphere.
Dune Bashing
Many camel safari packages include a dune bashing experience. This thrilling activity involves driving a 4×4 vehicle over the sand dunes at varying speeds. Skilled drivers navigate the challenging terrain, providing an adrenaline-pumping ride that contrasts with the calm of the camel journey. Dune bashing is a must-try for adventure seekers.
Sandboarding
For those who love adventure sports, sandboarding is an exhilarating option. Similar to snowboarding, sandboarding involves gliding down the dunes on a specially designed board. It’s an exciting way to experience the desert’s natural slopes and enjoy some high-speed fun.
Sunset Views
One of the highlights of a camel safari is witnessing the desert sunset. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant colors, creating a magical ambiance. The cooling temperatures and changing light make this the perfect time for photos and reflection.
Henna Painting
At the desert camp, indulge in traditional henna painting. Henna artists create intricate designs on your hands and feet using natural henna paste. This temporary body art is a beautiful souvenir of your desert adventure and a connection to local customs.
Traditional Music and Dance
Immerse yourself in the cultural heritage of the UAE with live entertainment at the desert camp. Enjoy traditional performances such as belly dancing and Tanoura dance. These captivating shows offer a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of the region and provide lively entertainment.
Falconry
Experience the ancient art of falconry, a practice that has been integral to Arabian culture for centuries. Watch trained falcons demonstrate their hunting skills under the guidance of experienced falconers. This activity offers a unique opportunity to learn about the bond between the falconers and their birds and the significance of falconry in Bedouin life.
BBQ Dinner
The highlight of the evening is the BBQ dinner. Enjoy a sumptuous feast featuring a variety of grilled meats, fresh salads, and traditional Arabian dishes. The BBQ is prepared by expert chefs who use authentic recipes to create a culinary delight. Dining under the stars in the tranquil desert setting adds to the magic of the experience.
Tumblr media
How to Enjoy the Camel Safari with BBQ
Engage with the Culture
Take the time to engage with the cultural activities offered at the desert camp. Try henna painting, watch traditional performances, and learn about the history and traditions of the Bedouin people. These cultural experiences add depth to your safari and create lasting memories.
Capture the Moments
Bring a camera or smartphone to document your journey. The desert provides a stunning backdrop for photos, especially during sunrise and sunset. Capture the beauty of the dunes, the excitement of the activities, and the joy of the BBQ dinner.
Relax and Unwind
After a day of adventure, relax and unwind in the serene setting of the desert camp. Enjoy the peacefulness of the desert, the warmth of the campfire, and the beauty of the night sky. The camp is designed to provide a comfortable and relaxing environment where you can enjoy the tranquility of the desert.
Stay Safe
Follow the safety guidelines provided by your tour operator. Wear appropriate clothing, stay hydrated, and listen to the instructions of your guides during activities like dune bashing and sandboarding. Safety is paramount to ensure an enjoyable and worry-free experience.
Make the Most of Your Time
