Black March (by Stevie Smith)
I have a friend
At the end
Of the world.
His name is a breath
Of fresh air.
He is dressed in
Grey chiffon. At least
I think it is chiffon.
It has a
Peculiar look, like smoke.
It wraps him round
It blows out of place
It conceals him
I have not seen his face.
But I have seen his eyes, they are
As pretty and bright
As raindrops on black twigs
In March, and heard him say:
I am a breath
Of fresh air for you, a change
By and by.
Black March I call him
Because of his eyes
Being like March raindrops
On black twigs.
(Such a pretty time when the sky
Behind black twigs can be seen
Stretched out in one
Uninterrupted
Cambridge blue as cold as snow.)
But this friend
Whatever new names I give him
Is an old friend. He says:
Whatever names you give me
I am
A breath of fresh air,
A change for you.

Princess Beatrice enchants in tailored dress from the Duchess of Cambridge's wardrobe
The royal ladies are unexpected style twins
The 33-year-old royal looked enchanting in an elegant Self-Portrait midi dress to attend the 2022 Annual Summit dinner at Mansion House on Friday. The poignant event brought together 20:40 members and senior leaders, of which Princess Beatrice was a speaker.
Photographs shared by guests on Instagram picture Princess Beatrice donning the tailored piece, which features a fitted bouclé jacket with a waist-cinching belt, and a lace-trimmed pleated chiffon skirt.
The royal's effortlessly elegant fit sparked a fashion frenzy online, who quickly matched Princess Beatrice's dress to one in the Duchess of Cambridge's archive.
Kate memorably wore the iconic Self-Portrait ensemble at the reception for Hold Still, and again at the Queen's Platinum Party at the Palace last month - a timeless piece in her wardrobe.
Quick to react to Princess Beatrice's eveningwear aesthetic, one fan wrote: "I wonder if Catherine allowed Beatrice to borrow this outfit!! Love the recycling options."
"I loved it since I first saw it on Kate," shared a second fan, while another penned: "I don’t know what happened to the Princess and the Duchess but they are literally GLOWING lately! Loving them both."
It wouldn't be unlikely if the Duchess of Cambridge lent Princess Beatrice her dress, given their close relationship and similar royal style.
Both royals are also keen advocates of recycling fashion, having re-worn many an outfit and statement accessory through the years.
The statement Self-Portrait tailored midi-dress retails for £420. The head-turning fit is the ultimate understated style statement, featuring peak lapels, structured shoulders, all-over metallic tweed texture and satin trim..
With two of the royal family's most fashionable ladies having worn the dress, most sizes have understandably sold out. But you can shop a select number of sizes from Selfridges.

The dazzling fireworks display had lasted all through the night - at least, as far through the night as Algy had managed to stay awake - but when dawn broke Algy found that the display had ended, and he knew that it was time to pack his bags...
Of course, Algy didn’t actually have any bags, for he had been magically transported to his island without time to make the usual preparations, but he did now have a hammock, so he decided that that was the next best thing. Unfortunately, however, the hammock did not agree - it seemed to be of the opinion that it was made for swinging in, not for carrying the sundry bits and pieces collected by fluffy birds on tropical islands...
Algy spent an exhausting and frustrating few hours trying to persuade the hammock to cooperate, but with very little success, and when he had attempted for the twenty-sixth time to wrap his birthday poetry books in it, only to have the hammock tip them out again, he decided that he might as well take a wee break and spend his time more profitably by reading one instead. Opening a book at random, this is what he read:
I have a friend At the end Of the world. His name is a breath
Of fresh air. He is dressed in Grey chiffon. At least I think it is chiffon. It has a Peculiar look, like smoke.
It wraps him round It blows out of place It conceals him I have not seen his face.

Algy hopes very much that the new season will bring all his friends a breath of fresh air and some very positive changes 😀

Dark academia clothes:
• buy second hand from places like depop/thrift shops
• save your money and instead of buying fast fashion, buy high quality pieces that are versatile (ex. high quality white blouse, high quality leather shoes, high quality black slacks/dress pants)
• focus mostly on getting solid neutral colors in your wardrobe, it makes it so much easier to put together good outfits
• make sure you have the basics: a neutral sweater, neutral blouse, neutral cardigan, neutral skirt, neutral blazer, neutral turtleneck, neutral slacks, etc.
• make sure your clothes actually fit you well, don’t get anything ill-fitting, it’s usually unflattering so if you can afford it, take it to a tailor to fix any baggy bits, it’ll look way better! (fun fact: clothes that are made to look oversized will not look unflattering because they were designed to be “baggy” in all the right places while still having a good shape, this is why you shouldn’t buy a size large when you’re a size small for an oversized look, it will not have the result you hoped for)
• don’t know what to wear for something but wanna look fancy and put together? monotone outfits! ex. tan blazer + tan blouse + tan pants = god tier outfit, bonus points if you mix textures!
• get some good quality accessories in different colors: brown belt + gold buckle, brown belt + silver buckle, black belt + gold buckle, black belt + silver buckle, necklaces, earrings (i would die for dagger/sword ones), rings (signet ones are SO dark academia), also get small pliers to resize necklaces, bracelets, and to tighten those little rings holding your jewelry together so it doesn’t break!
• other accessories could be stuff like silk or chiffon hair bows, a brown leather satchel (the cambridge satchel company is a good place to buy from), mother of pearl cufflinks, etc.
• remember that these are just general tips and ideas, you can totally decide to pair weird socks with a very elegant outfit if you like, i LIVE for chaotic academia, wear whatever you feel like!

William Powell Frith (1819-1909) - Flowers
Oil on canvas. Painted in 1874.
44 x 40 inches, 111.8 x 101.6 cm. Estimate: £10,000-15,000.
Sold Cheffins, Cambridge, 11 Sept 2019 for £50,000 + B.P.
One of eight paintings Frith exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1875. With Richard Green, London, Jan 2021.
For fashion aficionados, I’ve pinched the following from Richard Green’s listing: Frith painted several pictures of attractive young women in fashionable dress from the mid-1850s and excelled at the delicate delineation of texture and detail. Here Frith’s subject models a high-collared and ruffed floral-white day dress, polonaise in style, complemented by a series of light, celestial blue adornments: a tiered bow at her neck, a sash around her waist and a series of flounced ribbons that decorate the wide span of her sleeves. The bell-shaped sleeves are embellished with an intricate edging of swirled, leaf-like lace patterning and this use of lace is repeated in the delicate capped shoulder of the bodice elegantly concealed beneath.
It was fashionable for daytime dresses to be cut with a lower, more angular neckline in the 1870s; however, this trend has been met and adapted in the current design, with a unique, sheer chiffon or fine muslin overlay that veils the sitter’s part-exposed shoulders. Importantly, these more inventive and revealing necklines slowly became more prominent throughout the decade, leading to a trend in velvet chokers, jet pendants and cravat-like ruffles; as shown in the present work. It was also incredibly popular within the dress codes of high society for young women to dress their hair at the back with complicated twists and rolls. Hats were therefore made smaller to accommodate intricate displays of braiding and tilted forward to the forehead; once they acquired a wider brim, they became known as ‘picture hats’.

The Awards Season Fashion Edit: BAFTAs 2020
For the past half a decade or so, the highlight of my calendar hasn’t been the long stream of Fashion Weeks, it’s not been Christmas, nor is my birthday even the top of my absolutely the best time of year list, it’s been, and still is, Awards Season.
The time of year where the red carpets are more televised than the awards shows, when everybody who is anybody is asked, “Who are you wearing?”, and not “Who do you want to see winning in X category?”, the fashion is almost as important as the accolades and celebration of film, television and music across the globe.
However, this year’s BAFTA’s have left me with a somewhat dimmed glee as the list of attendees walked the length of the red carpet, past the seemingly tame press pit and up the steps leading towards the Royal Albert Hall. The looks last Sunday were somewhat safe and less thrilling than what was seen Stateside at the SAG Awards or the Golden Globes just a few weeks ago, but perhaps everyone is opting to dazzle and impress the larger crowds of the Oscars in LA this Sunday. With that being said, I’m definitely not down-playing some of the stunning fashion highlights of the most prestigious British Film Awards, it’d be a crime for me to say that I wasn’t impressed by some major players in the fashion stakes and talk about some of my favourite styling ensembles (can we give a major cheer for the different shade of pinks we were blessed with?), whilst brushing over some of those… less so.
The ultimate favourites of mine, in no particular order, have to be;
Scarlett Johansson in that stunning deep pearlised pink, highly embellished and feathery Versace gown that literally made my jaw hit the floor the moment I clocked eyes on the double nominated actress.
Daisy Ridley, at first I thought she’d opted for a black, half-sheer gown, until I saw more photos and realised that it was in fact a deep teal shade that well and truly won me over. She look utterly and effortlessly beautiful with the form fitting custom made Oscar de la Renta dress complete with the sheer cape. Obsessed.
The Duchess of Cambridge always looks impeccable when she walks the length of the BAFTAs carpet (I nearly cried from the spectator pit when she walked past me in that forest-green number at the 2018 BAFTAs), but her ‘recycled’ gold and cream Alexander McQueen gown from a number of years ago looks just as incredible now as it did back in 2012.
Other favourites included Zoë Kravitz in a stunningly simple long-sleeved, gold, floor-length YSL number, Naomie Harris’ metallic silver sequinned Michael Kors gown that leads the procession of reimagined and current twenties styles and Laura Dern’s hot pink dress that gave her a youthful beauty on the red carpet. That’s not to mention Olivia Colman in her traditional awards style black embellished and sheer sleeved gown that is now synonymous with the BAFTA and Oscar winner, Charlize Theron dazzling in a plunging, pleated chiffon, bold purple Dior dress and Emilia Clarke’s again re-imagined black sparkly, twenties style slim-strapped, scoop-necked Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown.
Renée Zellweger was the first best dressed attendee that I fell head over heels for (and my overall favourite from the night!), that cotton-candy Prada gown softened her up beautifully and she couldn’t help but look elegant as she stepped onto the stage to accept her Best Actress award. There was something so youthful and understated about her complete look that still mesmerises me.
My controversial pick of the night has to be Florence Pugh. I’ve been hopelessly obsessed with her for the past year, so seeing her shine during awards season has been the best of the best for me. But when she stepped on the red carpet I was unsure, the colour made me give the instant thumbs up, but the rest made me unsure for a solid thirty minutes. The more pictures I saw circulating Twitter the more I leaned towards I actually really love this, however almost a week later I’m still edging on slightly unsure. I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt and keeping both thumbs up though.
And not to forget the men, my top looks were from John Boyega, Andrew Scott and Jack Lowden.
The more I talk about the BAFTAs, the more I hope (and pray and beg) that one day I’ll be invited and not having to spend time entering the ballots or running for wristbands just to be in the audience pits on the red carpet (not that I’m complaining!). Now time to be excited for the Oscars styles.

Princess Mary of Denmark wears pale blue like Kate Middleton and Princess Diana
Princess Mary of Denmark wears pale blue like Kate Middleton and Princess Diana
Most recently, the Duchess of Cambridge wore a pale blue dress to the Royal Family’s Easter Sunday service two weeks ago. It was an Emilia Wickstead coat dress, featuring long sleeves and a cinched waist, that Kate had worn previously in 2017. Princess Diana also wore a lot of pale blue dresses, her most iconic one being a chiffon, floor-length gown she donned for the 1987 Cannes Film…
