"Copycats (and copyKates) are usually communicating "I want to be like you and feel like you. I want to have what you have." They are normally missing a core sense of who they are and copy to feel less empty and vacant emotionally."

Films In Town: Salad Days at the Brattle Theatre on Saturday
This Sat. December 7 at 7PM, the Brattle Theatre (Cambridge, MA) is doing a special 10th anniversary screening of my friend Scott Crawford's excellent documentary Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington DC (1980-90).
movie poster
Around 2014-2015, while I was hitting the film festival circuit with my documentary Life on the V: The Story of V66, there were several festivals where Crawford’s doc Salad Days was also screening. I started to hear a lot of buzz about this doc and we finally met at the 2015 Asbury Park Music in Film Festival. That same year, both of our docs were also distributed by MVD Entertainment Group. I liked Salad Days and felt like both of us were cut from the same cloth in that we both made docs about a specific region (Life on the V is about a music video TV channel in 1980s Boston; Salad Days is about the punk scene in the 1980s D.C.) but both were about universal themes and ideas. I included this in my Best Documentaries of 2015 list and I got to review the soundtrack album in 2018. I've also discussed this doc with some of the doc subjects including Pete Stahl and Fred Armisen. Crawford has kept busy in recent years including his 2020 doc about Creem magazine.
best seat in the house at the Brattle
Also - the Brattle is one of my favorite indie cinemas. In 2006, my producer and I actually purchased a Cruising In The Van Productions seat and that is still located in the 5th row.
For info and tickets on the Brattle's screening of Salad Days

What are your hopes for their anniversary? New pictures? New documentary? New roles?
WELL lol. There’s a difference between my hope and what I think is going to actually happen lol. I am FULLY prepared for a “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are hugely grateful for the well-wishes they received on the occasion of their 10th anniversary” with that wedding picture that I’m not even going to post because you know the one. However, I have *slightly* more hope for something more after the mother’s day cards because it shows they’re not afraid of people thinking that whatever they’re doing is PR or whatever (which they SHOULDN’T BE! I’m not saying it was PR but I am saying that it can be argued that half of the job is slightly PR. It shouldn’t be a bad thing at all and if everyone else does it, they should be able to do it too.)
Anyhoo, I’m hoping for *at least* a few new pictures from the wedding that we haven’t seen before. Bonus points if it’s from the reception and they’re being adorable. What I wouldn’t GIVE to see a picture from their first dance. I mean... these two who are eye f*cking each other all the live long day 10 years after their wedding? Can you IMAGINE what that first dance to Your Song was like? I mean of course I’d also love a new docu, especially if that rumour of them commenting on their wedding was true like I would give a left arm to see that I’m not joking. My hope that I know is not going to happen is full regalia pic but I’d be content with a new casual one too.Â
I also think it’s high time for Kate to get some major, major new roles from the Queen. Military ones especially. She deserves some big big seals of approval from the RF in a public way.Â

Kate, Princess of Wales, and her husband, Prince William, visited Windsor Foodshare on Thursday to hear about how the organization supports local individuals and families. The Prince and Princess of Wales also helped volunteers sort food donations and prepare packages for those permitted by the charity. Windsor Foodshare, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary later this year, helps an average of 150 people per week with its services. Kate has already undertaken solo engagements, focusing on her early years' development work, although this marked their second joint outing of the year. After almost 12 years in the Royal Family, Kate is a seasoned working royal. According to one expert, the Princess has modelled herself on a particularly successful member of the Firm - the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Gyles Brandreth, author of Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, has pointed out a fundamental way Kate is following in the footsteps of Her Majesty. In his book, Mr. Brandreth recalled a conversation he had with Prince Philip when Kate first stepped onto the royal scene. "When Catherine Middleton came along as a potential bride for his grandson, Prince William, the Duke of Edinburgh was, he told me, relieved to find her such a level-headed girl," he wrote.
Mr. Brandreth continued: "I have been on a walkabout with the Duchess of Cambridge. She does not look at the camera. Catherine talks about the matter in hand, never about herself."
Well-wishers urged Prince William and Kate to "keep working" as the couple resumed royal duties just two days after Prince Harry's explosive memoir - with William appearing to respond for the first time to the devastating claims.
It is not the first time the Duchess of Cambridge and Cornwall has been compared to the late Queen. The Channel 5 royal documentary, Kate: Our Queen in Waiting, draws on the similarities between the two royals, particularly public engagements.
Narrator David Riley said of the Duchess: "Kate's stoical attitude towards the press mirrors that of the Queen herself. It's felt by many to be the appropriate royal response".
Historian Dr. Chandrika Kaul added: "Kate epitomizes the adage 'never complain, never explain' much like the Queen has in her successful and long reign." While royal journalist, Victoria Murphy, said there were "a lot of parallels between Kate's personality and the Queen's personality.
"Neither of them has an extroverted personality," she said. They don't seek the limelight. They both maintain a certain element of mystery in public life. This month has seen the Princess of Wales focus on a matter she has consistently advocated for as a working royal.

During her visit, Kate discussed the importance of early years' development of children, something Kate described as "vital". The future Queen Consort also joined a group of children playing in a sandpit and spoke to staff about the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic lockdowns. She said: "I think the families realized that [when] these spaces were closed down for the majority of the time, I think everyone realized how vital they were."
Later, on Wednesday, 25 January, Kate met a group of eight professionals from academia, science and education. These professionals were chosen to offer strategic advice and provide oversight of the work of her Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood.
According to Kensington Palace, the group - who have expertise in neuroscience, perinatal psychiatry, policy development and psychology - will support Kate and the Centre "as work is accelerated to promote the fundamental importance of the first five years of a child's life.
They will help Kate's Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood as it commissions new research and raises awareness of the extraordinary impact the first five years of life have on the future outcomes of individuals.
Kate has spent the past nine years reflecting on how her passions and interests have shaped her role as a royal. According to the website of the Royal Family, the Princess wanted to go deeper into the current early years to gain a better understanding. She also wanted to learn how to address them. It was imperative to listen to experts, academics, practitioners, service providers and charities within the sector who work to make our families and communities sufficient.
