yippee i love this prompt 😛🫶
-
i hike the bag of my gear further up my shoulder, trying to process the coaches words as he continues to speak. my nerves are starting to get to me, my breathing shaky and my palms sweaty. i look back to make sure the guy who's holding the rest of my gear is still behind us, making sure my stuff isn't lost.
"alright y/n, are you ready to meet the guys?" coach asks, and i nod. "nervous? don't be. they're a great group of guys. they'll be a little uneasy at first, but they'll get used to ya." he smiles reassuringly.
the door opens and the other guy walks in first, then coach, then me. the locker room has gone silent, everyone looking at me. i feel like i'm gonna melt under their gazes, their eyes intense with wonder and curiosity. one of the trainers walks up to me with a smile, a man i recognize from my college team that got a job here last year, bruce.
"y/n! good to see you again!" bruce gives me a comforting hug, one that's welcoming and warm. "i'm glad that we get to be on the same team again."
i flash him a nervous smile, "thanks, it's good to actually know someone around here. truth be told, i'm a little nervous."
"i can tell. but trust me, the guys'll love you." he says, moving his hair out of his face.
next thing i know, coach is introducing me to the players, "shes played on a men's team before, so she's used to playing with guys if that's what you guys are gonna try and argue." he laughs, "she's an incredible player, don't let her fool you."
i smile warmly at the players, giving them a little wave. "i'm happy to answer any questions you guys might have for me."
the room is silent, then a voice in the corner speaks. "why did you play on a men's team? i'm not trying to be rude, just wondering. why not women's?"
"well, i was given a scholarship to play women's hockey, only for them to not have enough people to play on the team. they gave the few girls who tried out a choice, don't play, transfer to a school with a women's team, or play with the guys." i explain, "i was the only one who chose to play with the guys. i saw it as a great opportunity to get better at the sport, even if i didn't get to play in any games. the coach ended up deciding i was better than he thought, so i played in most of the games."
some of the players nod in understanding and some of them just sit there, still confused. "we have about an hour before practice starts, take this time to get to know y/n and make sure you all treat her with kindness and respect. she's worked hard to get here and she deserves it." coach tortorella says, patting me on the back before he leaves.
i stand awkwardly at the door before i move to my cubby. beginning to unpack my things. a picture in a ziplock baggie rests at the bottom of my bag and i pick it up, pulling the photo out of the plastic bag and taping it to the wall of my cubby. i smile at the photo, a picture of me and some of my former teammates on the ice in our uniforms.
"that your old team?" a voice from beside me asks, and i look beside me to see a guy with dark hair and a kind smile. "i like those uniforms, the color is really cool." he stands, getting a closer look at the picture.
"yeah, most of the team didn't like the color change, but it ended up being pretty sick." i laugh, "the marble effect really amped it up."
he nods, holding out a hand for me to shake. "i'm jamie, jamie drysdale."
"y/n l/n, nice to meet you." i smile, shaking his hand firmly. "how long have you played here for?"
"this'll be my second year with the flyers, but i played for the ducks before this." he sits back down to pull on his skates. "i'm excited to play with you." he grins warmly.
"thank you, jamie. i'm excited to be here and i hope i can exceed all of your expectations." i nod, sitting down as well. i untie my sneakers, getting ready to put my gear on. "honestly, i'm really nervous."
"i understand. but don't be, you'll fit right in." his words reassuring me a little. "the guys just have to get used to a girl being on the team, but once they get to know you i'm sure they'll all take a liking to you".
"that's how it was with my old team, some of them hated me at first but they ended up being the ones who cared about me the most." i say, pulling off my sweatpants. my compression leggings already on. "i remember when i got a huge hit laid on me my first year and i almost went unconscious. when i looked off beside me, the player was already on the ice getting his face pounded in by my teammate who acted like he hated me the most."
i laugh at the memory, pointing to the biggest guy in the picture. he looks angry, intimidating for sure. "that's him, his name is trevor. great guy, we ended up becoming best friends after that game."
jamie chuckles at the story, "my best friend's name is trevor too, we met when i played in anaheim. but, it's good that you had people to stick up for you, i'm sure some of the guys will fill that role here, i know i'll sure try."
"i appreciate that, i'll try and stick up for you guys too. i don't know if i can take down that rempe guy, but i can try!" i laugh. "trev taught me some moves in case i get in a fight, but i'll probably need some backup."
"you'll definitely get back up here, these guys are pretty protective of each other." he says.
i laugh, pulling my hoodie over my head. i slip on my shoulder gear, snapping it into place and pulling the straps tight, adjusting it to my liking. a sigh escaping my lips as i slip my jersey onto my body. the bright orange is completely different from my old, blue practice jersey.
"tough change, huh?" a guy asks, "i'm cam york, nice to meet you." he holds out a hand, smiling at me.
"y/n l/n, nice to meet you." i smile, "and yeah, but i'm grateful to be here."
he smiles, "how many of the guys have you met? i saw you talking to jamie so i assume you've gotten to know him a bit."
"he's the only one i've met so far..."
he laughs as he turns around, beginning to point out players. "bobby, matvei, garnet, samuel, ivan, travis, owen, another travis..." we both laugh, "and you'll meet the rest of them eventually. there's a lot of us so we won't be upset if you get some of us mixed up at first."
i nod with a smile, "thanks, i'm excited to get to know you guys."
"i was talking to some of the other guys earlier, they're excited to play with you. you're gonna make waves in the nhl, we just know it." his hand comes up to pat my shoulder.
i laugh, making a little more small talk with him. i grab my stick, the custom blue marble still matching my old team. i frown, i'll have to get some new sticks, i kinda want to keep the last two intact, glad i left one at home and brought my more basic sticks with me.
i make my way onto the ice, the cold air nipping at my skin. i'm excited for my first practice with them, hoping i can show off my skills.
-
once practice is over, i make my way off the ice with a groan. i pull off my helmet, sighing. a man with a head full of red hair walks up beside me, it's owen tippet. "tired?" he asks with a smirk. "better learn to keep up, you're in the big leagues now."
i look at him strangely, my mouth open to snap back when someone else cuts in instead. "hey y/n! what did you think of your first practice?" jamie asks, a wide smile on his face. owen rolls his eyes, walking ahead.
"i think i did okay, most of those drills i've done before so it didn't seem to tough." i say, noticing how jamie changes his pace to slow down. "thanks for saving me from that, by the way. i don't know what i would've said..."
"no problem, he's just got a attitude, he doesn't like change." jamie chuckles. "he'll warm up to you eventually, especially if you snap back. he's one of those, you have to kinda match his energy for him to like you. but anyways, that's great! i'm glad you're fitting in so far."
i hum, processing his words about owen. "thanks."
"hey, what are you doing tonight? cam wants to go eat dinner and he asked me to invite you." he smiles warmly, opening the locker room door for me and him.
"i was just gonna unpack my things, but dinner sounds great!" i smile, walking over to my cubby.
jamie follows behind me since his cubby is beside mine. "awesome, we're gonna go to that burger place like five minutes from here, you can follow my car."
i nod, sitting down to untie my skates. "great, thanks! hey, do you know if there's a girls locker room here? i wanna shower."
"yeah, ask one of the staff members and they'll show you the way." he says, pulling off his gear. "i can meet you outside if you want? i'm gonna shower first too."
"yeah, it'll be like twenty minutes for me." i say, grabbing my clothes and toiletry bag. "alright, i'll meet you out there." he waves and i wave goodbye as well, walking outside to find a staff member.
-
after my shower, i make my way back to the locker room. there's only a few guys left, packing their last few things to leave. i set my toiletry bag down, grabbing my other bag and walking outside, waving a goodbye to them.
i walk outside to parking lot, seeing jamie waiting there for me. he looks up from his phone when he hears my footsteps, smiling. "hey! ready to go?"
i nod with a smile, walking towards him. "i'll follow you in my car, just don't drive to fast!" i laugh, beginning to walk to my car. i hear jamie laugh behind me, giving me a thumbs up.
once we make it to the restaurant, cam is already outside waiting for us. it doesn't seem very busy, with very few cars in the parking lot. it's a cute little diner, with light blue tiles on the floor and booths complete with red leather seats. i smile as i sit down, the two guys sitting across from me.
the menus are placed on the table infront of us, with all three of us ordering waters. i bite the bottom of my lip as i look at the small menu, finally deciding on a cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato, with fries on the side. the waitress takes our orders, then takes up our menus.
"so y/n, what school did you go to again?" cam asks, taking a sip of water. "it was in new york, right?"
"yeah, i went to colgate." i smile, "the hockey program there is insanely good."
"hmm. what happened to their womens team? i remember hearing you talk about it but i still wasn't sure what happened." cam asks, propping his chin up on his fist.
"they didn't have enough girls, which seems like it would be impossible with such a big school, but a lot of their players were seniors last year so they lost a lot of players when they graduated and it's already hard to get on the team, so the girls there don't even bother to try out." i explain, picking at the skin around my fingers.
"that's crazy! how hard were the tryouts? do you know?" jamie asks, leaning closer in curiosity.
"well, i had to do the men's team tryouts by myself since they already had theirs, but the men's are about on the same level. it was really tough, like laps after every drill tough. they hold every team to a very high standard, no matter sport."
they both hum, cam seems to be deep in thought, his eyes focused on the table.
"can i ask you guys something?" i break the awkward silence, sighing. they both nod, their brows furrowing. "do you think the other guys will like me? i don't wanna sound like a pick me or self centered, but trust is important on team sports and if they don't trust me, then...i probably won't play well."
"they just need time, they'll learn to trust you. torts is pretty tough on us when a new player joins, no matter how long they've been in the league. i agree though, trust is really important." can answers, smiling softly.
"i remember when i first came to the team, it took a while for the guys to trust me." jamie shrugs, "i didn't get passed the puck a lot in games, but they learned to trust me pretty quickly."
cam chuckles, "i remember that." he points to jamie, "we called him baby face for the first few weeks."
i laugh, realizing jamie kinda does have a baby face, he's actually pretty cute. the waitress sets our food down on the table, flashing us a smile as she walks away. the food looks delicious, the cheese on my burger perfectly melted, the lettuce and tomato cold and crisp.
"so y/n, are you ready for your first game tomorrow?" jamie asks, taking a bite of his fries. "it's the panthers, gonna be intense."
"i think so, coach is gonna help me make sure i got the plays down after morning practice tomorrow so i think i'll be ready." i say with a little smile. "i'm excited to play them, i always loved watching the bruins growing up, especially brad marchand. but now that he's with the panthers, it's gonna be a new level of tough."
"really? marchand?" cam laughs, shaking his head. "he's good, but he's not all that he's cracked up to be."
"hey, fans either hate or love marchand, there's no in between." jamie laughs, looking over at cam. "honestly, if i didn't have to play against him, i'd probably be a fan too."
our conversation goes into many different topics, with us sitting in the diner for a few hours until we finally decide to go home.
i unlock the door to my apartment, looking at the boxes everywhere. i sigh, putting it off another day. my shoes are kicked off by the door before i walk back to my room, changing into my pajamas.
i lay in my bed, already mentally preparing myself for this game tomorrow. i'm afraid about the guys not trusting me, but i can hopefully try and build that up a bit at practice before the game tomorrow. i cut off my lamp, closing my eyes and resting, already nervous and excited at the same time for my first nhl game tomorrow.

modern family is all fun and games until you get to the scenes where you burst into tears because the once-vaguely homophobic dad now refers to his son's husband as family, and also the academically gifted daughter realizes that her dorky, clumsy dad was always really proud of her and just never surprised because he just assumed she could do anything, and also the eldest daughter who eloped comes crawling back to her parents' room and whispers that she still wants her parents to be present for her wedding, and also the anxious queer lawyer character admits that he was terrified that his husband would just leave him alone with their baby daughter, and also that the once-vaguely grouchy dad looks at his stepson and tells him that what makes a family is who sticks around, not who you're blood-related to and anyways what was i saying

I have been playing with your ukagaka and I have to say I really enjoyed playing with Aldebaran! One question about their design tho. Do they have black lips or black teeth? Because after paying attention to their mouth I'm not longer sure what I'm looking at...
Aldebaran has blue lips and dark purple teeth!

Vtubing opened a door for a lot of ppl to start streaming bc for a while it was expected and standard that if you became a bigger streamer you would have to show your face and record your reactions. this not only just made it where "most conventionally attractive wins" it also put a barrier on a lot of marginalized creators who could face harassment from just showing themselves at all
there are a lot more black vtubers than you know about because they decided not to use their real face to protect themselves
