Clarence Everett Lightner (August 15, 1921 - July 8, 2002) the first popularly elected mayor of Raleigh and the first African American elected mayor of a metropolitan Southern city, was born to Mammie Blackmon and Calvin E. Lightner in Raleigh. His father, Calvin, founded the Lightner Funeral Home.
He graduated from North Carolina Central College and studied at Echols College of Mortuary Science in Pennsylvania so that he could continue working at his fatherâs business. While at North Carolina Central he was a star athlete and was inducted into the NCCU Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi and Sigma Pi Phi Fraternities, and he served in the Army for three years during WWII.
He was one of the first African Americans elected to political office. He promoted his business and community leadership as qualifications for a seat on the Raleigh City Council, which he won. He served on the City Council (1967-73). He was elected mayor. He became a charter member of the Southern Conference of Black Mayors.
His election did draw some national attention because only 16% percent of the registered voters in Raleigh were Black, it was indeed rare for a majority of Southern white voters to elect an African American to any office. His race was hardly mentioned in the campaign.
He was appointed by North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt to replace state Senator John Winters. He served out the rest of Winterâs term, which amounted to about a year.
He served as chairman of the Board of Trustees at Saint Augustineâs College and as a member of the Board of Trustees at North Carolina Central University for ten years.
He was awarded honorary doctorate degrees from Shaw University, Saint Augustineâs College, and North Carolina Central University.
He was survived by his wife, Marguerite Massey Lightner, and three children. He had a son, who preceded him in death. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #sigmapiphi #omegapsiphi

Main Storylines:
Silas:
The residents of Hollyoaks were gripped by fear when it appeared that there was a killer amongst them in 2011. After killing India Longford in December 2010, Silas made plans for Lynsey Nolan to become his next victim. Fortunately, Lynsey was saved from harm when Riley Costello, Silasâ grandson, heard her screams and Silas made his escape. However, Lynsey knew that Silas was her attacker, sparking off a game of cat and mouse between the pair...

After killing Bex and Rae, Silasâ sick game with Lynsey stepped up a gear, and he told her that he planned to take another life on Halloween, but Lynsey could save the woman if she could work out her identity. Lynseyâs obsession with Silas cost her her job, home and friends but she refused to give up. Meanwhile, having discovered that Mercedes had been cheating on Riley, Silas kidnapped her and planned to kill her once sheâd given birth. As Halloween approached, Silasâ downfall began when he accidentally killed his own daughter, Heidi, mistaking her for Lynsey. The police finally began to take Lynseyâs claims seriously and Silas was arrested, whilst Mercedes was saved just in the nick of time.Â

Jacquiâs Rape:
Hollyoaks explored the issue of consent in early 2011, when Jacqui McQueen accused Gilly Roach of raping her. Having slept with Jacqui, the girlfriend of his best pal, Rhys, Gilly insisted that their drunken night together was consensual. But with Jacqui insisting that she had not consented, Gilly was arrested and the case went to trial. In a unique move, Hollyoaks invited a selection of viewers to act as members of the jury for the case. After both parties gave their accounts of events, the jury decided that there was insufficient evidence to charge Gilly, and he was found not guilty. However, some months later, Gilly admitted to not seeking consent from Jacqui.

Estherâs Arrival:
Tom found himself in a whole heap of bother in January when he attacked an intruder at the Osborneâs house. The intruder, a young woman, introduced herself to Frankie as her Granddaughter, Esther, and she was quickly invited into the family. However, Tomâs actions came back to haunt him when he was sent to a youth court for the attack.Â

Mercedesâ Affair:
After Seth discovered her affair with Carl, Mercedes took drastic action to stop him telling Riley, and lied that she was pregnant! Riley was overjoyed by the news but Mercedes was faced with a big dilemma. How would she break the news that she wasnât really pregnant? Myra soon came up with the perfect solution to her daughterâs predicament when Mercedes took a tumble at The Loft some weeks later. Riley insisted on rushing her to hospital, where Mercedes was given the shock of her life - she really was pregnant after all!Â

Over the months that followed, Mercedes and Riley planned their wedding, all the while, Mercedes kept the truth about her affair secret. However, Mercedes was hit by an uncharacteristic pang of guilt as she walked down the aisle, and she told Riley and the shocked congregation everything! Riley was devastated as Mercedes revealed that she couldnât be sure who her babyâs Father was, and Mercedesâ actions incurred the wrath of Silas, who promptly kidnapped her, and locked her up in a vault under The Dog, planning to kill her once sheâd given birth. Mercedes was eventually rescued when the truth about Silasâ murders came to light and Mercedes later gave birth to baby Bobby.Â

Bart/Jason/Sinead:
Teenagers, Bart and Sineadâs, relationship didnât go down too well with their families, so the pair fled the village! However, the pair quickly discovered that being Chesterâs answer to Romeo and Juliet wasnât all it was cracked up to be when they ran out of cash. Luckily, Jason was on hand to help and arrived with some money, much to the annoyance of Sinead. Infuriated by Jasonâs presence, Sinead stormed off, leaving Bart and Jason to fend for themselves. However, Bart and Jason soon found themselves confronted with a shotgun when they broke into a house to look for food, and the pair were soon locked up in the ownerâs cellar. With nothing else to do, the pair had a heart-to-heart, which quickly lead to a kiss. But, a heartbroken Sinead was just outside. And had heard everything...

Britzeee:
Wannabe wag, Mitzeee, was stunned when she caught Brendan and Ste kissing and soon decided to turn the situation to her advantage, telling Brendan that she would keep his secret if he became her manager! And so, Britzeee was born!Â

Separately, 2011 was an eventful year for both Brendan and Mitzeee. Over the Summer Brendan would be joined in the village by his teenage son, Declan, and he would soon be left with plenty of explaining to do when Declan walked in on him beating Ste! Brendan found himself spending much of the latter part of the year in prison when Silas framed him for Raeâs murder, whilst Mitzeee feared for her life when she discovered that Warren had murdered his ex, Louise Summers.

Hollyoaks Later

Our annual late-night dose of Hollyoaks returned in September. Stories this time centred on the McQueenâs trip to Ibiza for Mercedes hen do, Silasâ hunt for another victim, culminating in the murder of Rae and Rileyâs stag do, which saw Seth believe he had killed a stripper. Lives were in peril in a white water rafting accident whilst there were japes aplenty as Duncan and Ricky headed to fat camp!Â
Other stories:
Cindy returned to the village in March, minus her new husband, Alistair, and daughter Holly. She soon revealed that Alistair had died after falling off an Alp, leaving her a millionaire! She used the money to enrol Holly in boarding school and open up her own spa, âCinergyâ.

4 days in, your thoughts on Louis' team and the promo so far?
the new team is very good and what i like most is that you can tell they are professionals, something louis never had in a team before. jordan is very talented and the creative campaigns are beautiful, matt vines is actually present and does make an effort for louis which is truly appreciated tbh. Arista is pushing him as much as they can and way more than s*co (which is the new thing in this promo) heâs THE artist in their relaunched label so i expect them to do even better once his promo starts in the US. David Massey is not stupid and is not S*mon nor that bunch of losers he works with, he was THE MAN behind great artists at Universal so he is perfectly capable of doing great things for louis and louisâ career. I also like how they studied the fandom and they are very aware of the power we hold in all this. It might sound crazy after what happened on friday but I think the whole shitshow wasnât their fault and they just had to go with it unfortunately.
I believe the new guard is working with a lot of limitations (especially in the UK) due to the fact that louis is still stuck with s*co and we got our evidence with dick wattpadâs interview. they have to work with things that are stupid, bad and makes no sense (and unfortunately they damage the product they are trying to sell) but they still have to it until they donât so - as i said yesterday - it is what it is really. I think Louis negotiated a lot with the XFactor stint and the fact that we are still not seeing ALL the results we expected, doesnât mean weâll never do. I think there is still a lot to come and the new team will be able to help with a lot of things, stunts included.Â
Personally, I think Arista is leading and will be in the future, i think Sony gave David & his team most of the power on the promo, but obviously Louis has a DD with S*co in the UK so we also have to expect shit like the one they pulled two days ago because thatâs what they do, try sabotaging and damaging louisâ persona as much as they can. I also have to say that something (read: the words louis used about xfactor, s*m** etc. in the shitcast) is telling me that the s*n will have the exclusive that louis left s*co for good to work with arista in the next months (finger crossed) probably right when the album release will be announced (just like Little Mix did). Once this happens and s*co is out for good, I think we will finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Needless to say that ALL THIS above I just wrote is based on what I have observed, maybe I am 100% wrong, I wish I could see the future really. In conclusion, the bottom line is that Louis deserves everything and more than that, the song is beautiful and worth the effort,l fans need to stream and buy it and support it and not let s*co ruin this whole thing we waited for more than a year. I know it sucks, I know it was vomiting and insulting, but I donât think Louis had a choice so he doesnât have to be punished for something he cannot change right now. I also hope his team keep pushing the way they did this week so new people can appreciate and discover how crazily talented our boy is and like/buy the song. I also think his new team has a lot planned for the future and they will do everything in their power to navigate through the shit and bring out the best for louis and his music. Donât forget that Mark is CALVIN HARRISâ manager for godâs sake, we are not talking about the first Crusty Clown we found in the street. Matt has a lot of great artists as well, I personally think he was put in good hands this time. I know it doesnât feel like it right now, believem me, but I trust Louis like I always do and I will for the time being.Â

A Merry Christmas Match (Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, 2019)
This clock. It wants to tick. To tell time. To live. Are you really gonna deny it that?
Starring: Ashley Newbrough, Kyle Dean Massey, Lindsey Gort, John DeLuca
Plot Synopsis: Corey Calvin dreamed of being a theater director in the city but that meant abandoning her late fatherâs antiques shop in her small hometown as well as leaving the local Christmas Pageant as director. When LA hunk Ryder Donnelly visits her shop, more than Christmas lights twinkle and their affection grows. A surprise gift from Ryder convinces Corey to attend a holiday soiree at the Donnelly estate. When Corey sees Ryder at her Christmas Pageant, she reaches a crossroads. Does she owe it to her dadâs memory to stay in Harmony or owe it to her heart and finally listen when love calls? (x)
In My Humble Opinion:Â The lead male character in A Merry Christmas Match was supposedly hot. Not just in the blandly attractive Hallmark way, but in the super successful career way too. Everything was coming up roses for that lead male character! How do I know this? Because all the other characters referred to him exclusively as âHottest Bachelorâ for a solid chunk of the movie. They would talk about how exciting it was that he was in town. They would be jealous that the female lead was talking to him. She had a bad encounter with him? How could she? He is the dream guy! Heâs the hottest bachelor!
For all this talk though, there was a point halfway through the movie where I was like, âDoes he have a job? Is he successful at his job? Why do people care about him? What does he even do with his life????â
I am pretty sure the movie must have mentioned it at some point. I have a feeling his job had something to do with antiques? But on what planet is an antiques dealer the hottest bachelor around? Chris Hemsworth could be my antiques dealer, and I still would not be campaigning him to win any Sexiest Man Alive polls because antiques dealer is not a typical fantasy boyfriend profession. Not many people are sitting around like âGod, if only the guy appraising shit on Antiques Roadshow could fuck me and take me away from my humdrum life.â Though, at least the guy who is appraising shit on Antiques Roadshow is on television, so like, thereâs a pathway to glamour there. The A Merry Christmas Match guy is just doing it on his own time for fun?
He might not even work as an antiques dealer! I have no idea what his job really entails except that it allows him free time to tinker with clocks, gives him parents who are so rich that they can magically gift major directing careers to randoms who directed some Christmas pageants, and that it makes him the hottest bachelor in the Los Angeles area. It makes you wonder what happened to all the other bachelors, if this man with no discernible life outside of fixing clocks is the hottest guy around. The guy who is so hot that you and your friends just can not stop talking about it!
I appreciate Hallmarkâs commitment to having disposable male leads. In a pop culture landscape where female love interests are just a collection of 20-year old skinny blonde ladies getting hot and bothered over men old enough to be their fathers, itâs refreshing to see a genre that embraces the idea that sometimes a male character is just a hot guy who can fix all your problems while having no personality or character traits. Still, I have trouble connecting to a film where I canât discern any details about the love interestâs life in the slightest or why heâs such a catch, and all I have to go on is being told that heâs the hottest bachelor and he likes clocks! Thatâs not enough for me. I need more from my hottest bachelors--an explanation, at the bare minimum.
Watch If: Your bedtime is the only old lady thing about you, if you think Comet is Santaâs favorite reindeer, or if you are Santaâs naughtiest MVP.
Skip If: Your mother doesnât care for tacky jewlery, if you would go to Los Angeles to visit your friendâs dog, or you arenât sure if the weather is good for skiing or if someone just lied.

Part of the Networkâs Annual âMiracles of Christmasâ Programming Event

STUDIO CITY, CA â September 24, 2019 â Ashley Newbrough (âPrivileged,â âSnowmanceâ) and Kyle Dean Massey (âNashvilleâ) star in âA Merry Christmas Match,â a new original premiering Friday, October 25, (9 p.m. ET/PT), on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries as part of the networkâs annual âMiracles of Christmasâ programming event.
Corey Calvin (Newbrough) works in the small-town antiques shop her late father opened and her mom tries to keep afloat. When her best friend leaves Harmony for TV stardom in Los Angeles, Corey settles for staying behind, her big city dreams of becoming a theater director sidelined. Keeping the shop open to honor her dadâs memory matters more to Corey, as does staying on as creative director of Harmonyâs annual Christmas Pageant. When real estate heir and Los Angeles hunk Ryder Donnelly (Massey) comes into the store to browse, more than Christmas lights twinkle in Coreyâs shop. As their relationship warms, Ryder implores Corey to think about what they might have between them. An unexpected thoughtful gift from Ryder persuades her to attend a Christmas charity gala at the Donnelly family estate. Their eyes meet again â until a misunderstanding over a past relationship of his threatens to undo everything. The big night of the annual Christmas Pageant in Harmony finally arrives and, much to Coreyâs shock, Ryder shows up. He explains the misunderstanding from his parentsâ party and has even more surprises in store for her. Now Corey must decide what she really wants and learn to listen to her heart.
âA Merry Christmas Matchâ is a The Ninth House production. Vanessa Shapiro and Stephanie Slack are Executive Producers, while Autumn Federici and Jake Helgren serve as producers. The movie was written and directed by Jake Helgren.

Channel Islands Witch Trials
The Channel Islands Witch Trials were a series of witch trials in the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey between 1562 and 1661.
Background
The Reformation saw the separation of the Church of England (or Anglican Church) from Rome under Henry VIII, beginning in 1529 and completed in 1537. In France John Calvin began publishing his thoughts in 1536 resulting in his fleeing the country, going first to Geneva then Strasbourg, where Calvinism became a significant religion with Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden and John David Jarvis in Guernsey adopting the religion in preference to the Roman Catholic Church from which they broke away. This led to persecution by Catholics of non-believers and the fleeing of members of the Reformed Church of France, the Huguenots, some of which found refuge in the Channel Islands.
The Islands had retained Roman Catholic Priests, partly due to the island churches being responsible to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Coutances, partly as a result of a shortage of French speaking Protestant priests and partly due to Mary, a Roman Catholic, being on the throne in England from 1553 to 1558.
During this period a number of Protestants fled the islands, Thomas Bertran, a Jersey Minister fleeing in 1556, a Guernsey merchant Guillaume de Beauvoir becoming a Dean of the English Church in Geneva in 1556, where John Knox and Christopher Goodman were the pastors. The highly influential English language Geneva Bible was first printed in that city in 1557. In Geneva John Calvin had people arrested, tortured, and executed. Suspected witches were also tortured and burnt by Protestant leaders, though more often they were banished from the city
Guernsey Martyrs
In 1556 during the Marian persecutions under Mary I, the persecution of Protestants for their beliefs, three women Guillemine Gilbert and Perotine Massey were sisters, and their mother, Catherine CauchĂŠs were tried for theft, for which they were found not guilty, however Perotine Massey was the wife of a Calvinist minister and all three were found guilty of holding religious views that were contrary to those required by the church authorities and burnt at the stake, Perotine giving birth to a baby boy in the flames. They became known as the Guernsey Martyrs.
Calvinism
The death of Mary I and the arrival of Elizabeth I of England coincided with the arrival of the Huguenots in the islands, with them came a number of French speaking priests of the Protestant Calvinist faith. The Bishop of Coutances lost his influence with the appointment of the Bishop of Winchester over the island churches, so ending all Catholic influence in the islands.
The Bailiff, Hellier Gosselin and the Roman Catholic ĂŠlite of the island were subjected to a series of commissions and investigations encompassing not only the circumstances of the execution of the women, but also embezzlement; James Amy, the Dean, was committed to prison in Castle Cornet and dispossessed of his living. Hellier Gosselin was dismissed from his post in 1562 but along with the Jurats managed to obtain a pardon from Queen Elizabeth.[4]:40
The French Wars of Religion from 1562 to 1598 increased the number of Protestant refugees arriving in the islands.
Calvinism is a very strict form of Protestantism and the islands found their churches being changed with the removal of paintings and religious symbols such as statues, decorated altars and fonts and the removal of crosses. By using the Ecclesiastical courts in the islands they enforced compulsory attendance at church twice every Sunday, bans of gambling and dancing and many other restrictions, especially on Sundays, upon pain of flogging, locking in stocks, imprisonment in the town cages or in castle dungeons.
Witch Trials
Between 1550 and 1650 at least 100 people were accused of witchcraft in Guernsey. Torture was used to force a confession to practicing witchcraft, after which the convicted were flogged, banished, hanged, strangled or burnt at the stake
George Reginald Balleine wrote about Witch Trials in Jersey, naming "the Witches' Rock at St. Clement", however his work is questioned as being naive about torture and resulting confessions.
Confessions in Guernsey showed the devil appearing as a cat, a dog, a hare, a rat, a weasel, or a goat and even as a masked man in daylight.
Ann of St Brelade in 1562 was the first witch trial in Jersey.
Paquette Le Vesconte, from Jersey, who had previously been arrested for witchcraft and banished from the island, returned and still using "diabolical devices and spells", was rearrested and "confessed that she had entered into partnership with the Devil, and by his help perpetrated innumerable crimes and homicides".
Jean Morant in Jersey, confessed to "a contract with the Devil.. by mark and pact.. by means of which he had committed infinite mischiefs, crimes and homicides"
Symon Vaudin in Jersey, confessed that he "had at divers times help familiar intercourse and talks with the Devil, who appeared as a cat and then as a crow".
Marie Tougis in Jersey, confessed "that she had caused the death of a child and bewitched a woman".
Peronelle Chevallier, wife of Robert Falla, was condemned to be "strangled at the post at the place of execution and there be burnt and her body consumed and reduced to ash and all her goods and property confiscated into the hands of our sovereign lady the Queen" Elizabeth I, in Jersey in 1597.
Elizabeth Grandin from Jersey was arrested for witchcraft but released with a warning "not to gad about the island".
Marie de Callais, from Calais Lane, St Martin in Guernsey was convicted of witchcraft, one of several in the coven at Le ChâtÊ Rocquôine and burnt at the stake on 17 October 1617. Two of her family were banished.
Mary Blanche, of a good family who lived in the area Les Blanches in St Martin, Guernsey, was condemned as a witch by the then Bailiff, Amice de Carteret and died in October 1622.
Thomas Tougis, Jouane Tougis, his daughter, and Michelle Chivret wife of Pierre Osmont were accused in 1622 of "long practised the horrible and heinous crime of sorcery" and kept imprisoned at Castle Cornet in Guernsey whilst "examined on various particulars", found guilty of having "committed various murders, smitten with debility several persons, made die many animals, and perpetrated a number of injuries", they were sentenced to be executed by being tied to a post on a scaffold, then burnt to death.
Isabel Becquet confessed "a woman she did not know", then "six others whom she also did not know" to be witches, they "were condemned to be taken with halters round their necks to the place of execution, there tied by the executioner to a post, and strangled and then burnt until their flesh and bones are reduced to ashes and the ashes scattered".
Marie Esnouf was the granddaughter of the Rector of Saint John, Jersey, but was executed in 1648, after having her head shaven, and witches marks found.
The trials ceased with the Act of Uniformity 1662 of Charles II of England which imposed the Book of Common Prayer and brought together Anglican and non-conformist religions, although it took a few years in the islands due to the spoken language being French
Not all deaths were the result of trials. In Jersey "Elizabeth Gavey was buried on the 29th day (of March 1765). She was found dead on the morning of the 28th near La Mare dâAngot at Ville a lâEveque. Killed by miserable superstitious people accusing her of sorcery who after having cruelly mistreated her caused her to die, throwing there her poor body. She was a poor innocent, who was thus born and lived all her life a poor innocent
There is a link to the Salem witch trials, Philippe dâAnglois (Philip English), was born in Jersey of Huguenot descent and emigrated to Salem in the 1670s and was one of those arrested.
The last witch trial in Jersey was John Jarvis in 1736 by which time at least 66 had been accused in the island.

Max Roach

Maxwell Lemuel "Max" Roach (January 10, 1924 â August 16, 2007) was an American jazz percussionist, drummer, and composer.
A pioneer of bebop, Roach went on to work in many other styles of music, and is generally considered alongside the most important drummers in history. He worked with many famous jazz musicians, including Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Billy Eckstine, Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy and Booker Little. He was inducted into the Down Beat Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1992.
Roach also led his own groups, notably a pioneering quintet co-led with trumpeter Clifford Brown and the percussion ensemble M'Boom, and made numerous musical statements relating to the Civil Rights Movement.
Biography
Early life and career
Roach was born in the Township of Newland, Pasquotank County, North Carolina, which borders the southern edge of the Great Dismal Swamp, to Alphonse and Cressie Roach. Many confuse this with Newland Town in Avery County. Although Roach's birth certificate lists his date of birth as January 10, 1924, Roach has been quoted by Phil Schaap as having stated that his family believed he was born on January 8, 1925. Roach's family moved to the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York when he was 4 years old. He grew up in a musical home, his mother being a gospel singer. He started to play bugle in parade orchestras at a young age. At the age of 10, he was already playing drums in some gospel bands. In 1942, as an 18-year-old fresh out of Boys High School, he was called to fill in for Sonny Greer with the Duke Ellington Orchestra when they were performing at the Paramount Theater.
In 1942, Roach started to go out in the jazz clubs of the 52nd Street and at 78th Street & Broadway for Georgie Jay's Taproom (playing with schoolmate Cecil Payne). His first professional recording took place in December 1943, supporting Coleman Hawkins.
He was one of the first drummers (along with Clarke) to play in the bebop style, and performed in bands led by Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Coleman Hawkins, Bud Powell, and Miles Davis. Roach played on many of Parker's most important records, including the Savoy November 1945 session, a turning point in recorded jazz. The drummer's early brush work with Powell's trio, especially at fast tempos, has been highly praised.
1950s
Roach studied classical percussion at the Manhattan School of Music from 1950 to 1953, working toward a Bachelor of Music degree (the School awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in 1990).
In 1952, Roach co-founded Debut Records with bassist Charles Mingus. This label released a record of a May 15, 1953 concert, billed as 'the greatest concert ever', which came to be known as Jazz at Massey Hall, featuring Parker, Gillespie, Powell, Mingus and Roach. Also released on this label was the groundbreaking bass-and-drum free improvisation, Percussion Discussion.
In 1954, Roach and trumpeter Clifford Brown formed a quintet that also featured tenor saxophonist Harold Land, pianist Richie Powell (brother of Bud Powell), and bassist George Morrow, though Land left the following year and Sonny Rollins soon replaced him. The group was a prime example of the hard bop style also played by Art Blakey and Horace Silver. This group was to be short-lived; Brown and Powell were killed in a car accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in June 1956. The first album Roach recorded after their deaths was Max Roach + 4. After Brown and Powell's deaths, Roach continued leading a similarly configured group, with Kenny Dorham (and later the short-lived Booker Little) on trumpet, George Coleman on tenor and pianist Ray Bryant. Roach expanded the standard form of hard-bop using 3/4 waltz rhythms and modality in 1957 with his album Jazz in 3/4 time. During this period, Roach recorded a series of other albums for the EmArcy label featuring the brothers Stanley and Tommy Turrentine.
In 1955, he was the drummer for vocalist Dinah Washington at several live appearances and recordings. Appearing at the Newport Jazz Festival with her in 1958 which was filmed and the 1954 live studio audience recording of Dinah Jams, considered to be one of the best and most overlooked vocal jazz albums of its genre.
1960s-1970s
In 1960 he composed and recorded the album We Insist!, subtitled Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite, with vocals by his then-wife Abbey Lincoln and lyrics by Oscar Brown Jr., after being invited to contribute to commemorations of the hundredth anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. In 1962, he recorded the album Money Jungle, a collaboration with Mingus and Duke Ellington. This is generally regarded as one of the very finest trio albums ever made.
During the 1970s, Roach formed a musical organizationâ"M'Boom"âa percussion orchestra. Each member of this unit composed for it and performed on many percussion instruments. Personnel included Fred King, Joe Chambers, Warren Smith, Freddie Waits, Roy Brooks, Omar Clay, Ray Mantilla, Francisco Mora, and Eli Fountain.
1980s-1990s
In the early 1980s, Roach began presenting entire concerts solo, proving that this multi-percussion instrument could fulfill the demands of solo performance and be entirely satisfying to an audience. He created memorable compositions in these solo concerts; a solo record was released by Baystate, a Japanese label. One of these solo concerts is available on video, which also includes a filming of a recording date for "Chattahoochee Red", featuring his working quartet, Odean Pope, Cecil Bridgewater and Calvin Hill.
Roach embarked on a series of duet recordings. Departing from the style of presentation he was best known for, most of the music on these recordings is free improvisation, created with the avant-garde musicians Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton, Archie Shepp, and Abdullah Ibrahim. Roach created duets with other performers: a recorded duet with the oration by Martin Luther King, "I Have a Dream"; a duet with video artist Kit Fitzgerald, who improvised video imagery while Roach spontaneously created the music; a duet with his lifelong friend and associate Gillespie; a duet concert recording with Mal Waldron.
Roach wrote music for theater, such as plays written by Sam Shepard, presented at La Mama E.T.C. in New York City.
Roach found new contexts for presentation, creating unique musical ensembles. One of these groups was "The Double Quartet". It featured his regular performing quartet, with personnel as above, except Tyrone Brown replaced Hill; this quartet joined "The Uptown String Quartet", led by his daughter Maxine Roach, featuring Diane Monroe, Lesa Terry and Eileen Folson.
Another ensemble was the "So What Brass Quintet", a group comprising five brass instrumentalists and Roach, no chordal instrument, no bass player. Much of the performance consisted of drums and horn duets. The ensemble consisted of two trumpets, trombone, French horn and tuba. Musicians included Cecil Bridgewater, Frank Gordon, Eddie Henderson, Rod McGaha, Steve Turre, Delfeayo Marsalis, Robert Stewart, Tony Underwood, Marshall Sealy, Mark Taylor and Dennis Jeter.
Roach presented his music with orchestras and gospel choruses. He performed a concerto with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He wrote for and performed with the Walter White gospel choir and the John Motley Singers. Roach performed with dancers: the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the Dianne McIntyre Dance Company, the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company.
Roach surprised his fans by performing in a hip hop concert, featuring the artist-rapper Fab Five Freddy and the New York Break Dancers. He expressed the insight that there was a strong kinship between the outpouring of expression of these young black artists and the art he had pursued all his life.
Not content to expand on the musical territory he had already become known for, Roach spent the decades of the 1980s and 1990s continually finding new forms of musical expression and presentation. Though he ventured into new territory during a lifetime of innovation, he kept his contact with his musical point of origin. He performed with the Beijing Trio, with pianist Jon Jang and erhu player Jeibing Chen. His last recording, Friendship, was with trumpeter Clark Terry, the two long-standing friends in duet and quartet. Roach's last performance was at the 50th anniversary celebration of the original Massey Hall concert, in Toronto, where he performed solo on the hi-hat.
In 1994, Roach also appeared on Rush drummer Neil Peart's Burning For Buddy performing "The Drum Also Waltzes", Part 1 and 2 on Volume 1 of the Volume 2 series during the 1994 All-Star recording sessions.
Death
Max Roach died in the early morning of August 16, 2007, in Manhattan. He was survived by five children: sons Daryl and Raoul, and daughters Maxine, Ayo and Dara. Over 1,900 people attended his funeral at Riverside Church in Manhattan, New York City, on August 24, 2007. Max Roach was interred at the Woodlawn Cemetery, The Bronx, New York City.
In a funeral tribute to Roach, then-Lieutenant Governor of New York David Paterson compared the musician's courage to that of Paul Robeson, Harriet Tubman and Malcolm X, saying that "No one ever wrote a bad thing about Max Roach's music or his aura until 1960, when he and Charlie Mingus protested the practices of the Newport Jazz Festival."
Personal life
Two children, son Daryl Keith Roach and daughter Maxine Roach, were born from Roach's first marriage with Mildred Roach in 1949. In 1958 he met singer Barbara Jai (Johnson) and fathered another son, Raoul Jordu. He continued to play as a freelance while studying composition at the Manhattan School of Music. He graduated in 1952. During the period 1961â1970, Roach was married to the singer Abbey Lincoln, who had performed on several of Roach's albums. In 1971, twin daughters, Ayodele Nieyela and Dara Rashida, were born to Roach and his third wife, Janus Adams Roach. He had four grandchildren: Kyle Maxwell Roach, Kadar Elijah Roach, Maxe Samiko Hinds, and Skye Sophia Sheffield. Long involved in jazz education, in 1972 he was recruited to the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Amherst by Chancellor Randolph Bromery. In the early 2000s, Roach became less active from the onset of hydrocephalus-related complications.
From the 1970s through the mid-1990s Roach taught at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Style
Roach used traditional grip in his early activity but switched exclusively to matched grip as his career progressed.
Roach's most significant innovations came in the 1940s, when he and jazz drummer Kenny Clarke devised a new concept of musical time. By playing the beat-by-beat pulse of standard 4/4 time on the "ride" cymbal instead of on the thudding bass drum, Roach and Clarke developed a flexible, flowing rhythmic pattern that allowed soloists to play freely. The new approach also left space for the drummer to insert dramatic accents on the snare drum, "crash" cymbal and other components of the trap set.
By matching his rhythmic attack with a tune's melody, Roach brought a newfound subtlety of expression to his instrument. He often shifted the dynamic emphasis from one part of his drum kit to another within a single phrase, creating a sense of tonal color and rhythmic surprise. The idea was to shatter musical conventions and take full advantage of the drummer's unique position. "In no other society", Roach once observed, "do they have one person play with all four limbs."
While that approach is common today, when Clarke and Roach introduced the new style in the 1940s it was a revolutionary musical advance. "When Max Roach's first records with Charlie Parker were released by Savoy in 1945", jazz historian Burt Korall wrote in the Oxford Companion to Jazz, "drummers experienced awe and puzzlement and even fear." One of those awed drummers, Stan Levey, summed up Roach's importance: "I came to realize that, because of him, drumming no longer was just time, it was music."
In 1966, with his album Drums Unlimited (which includes several tracks that are entirely drum solos) he demonstrated that drums can be a solo instrument able to play theme, variations, rhythmically cohesive phrases. He described his approach to music as "the creation of organized sound." The track "The drum also waltzes" was often quoted by John Bonham in his Moby Dick drum solo and revisited by other drummers like Neil Peart and Steve Smith. Bill Bruford performed a cover on the album Flags (1985).
Honors
Roach was given a MacArthur Foundation "genius" grant in 1988, cited as a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters in France (1989), twice awarded the French Grand Prix du Disque, elected to the International Percussive Art Society's Hall of Fame and the Downbeat Magazine Hall of Fame, awarded Harvard Jazz Master, celebrated by Aaron Davis Hall, given eight honorary doctorate degrees, including degrees awarded by Medgar Evers College, CUNY, the University of Bologna, Italy and Columbia University. While spending the later years of his life at the Mill Basin Sunrise assisted living home, in Brooklyn, Max was honored with a proclamation honoring his musical achievements by Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz.
In 1986 the London borough of Lambeth named a park in Brixton after him. Roach was able to officially open it when he visited the UK that year invited by the Greater London Council, when he performed at a concert in March at the Royal Albert Hall together with Ghanaian master drummer Ghanaba and others.
Roach was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2009.

USA: World-Class Guitarist Mike Pachelli Releases New Album "High Standards" Featuring Tony Levin & Danny Gottlieb!
World-Class Guitarist Mike Pachelli Releases New Album "High Standards"Featuring Tony Levin & Danny Gottlieb!
While recently on the road with Tony Levin, Phil Keaggy and Jerry Marotta, Mike and Tony would jam on some jazz standards. In the green room at a concert in Pennsylvania, Mike asked Tony if he might consider playing on one song for his next album. Tony replied, "one song!? Let's do an entire album!â Tony said he was soon going on tour with King Crimson so "we should geright on it!" Mike invited his good friend Danny Gottlieb in to his studio and a few sessions later they completed âHigh Standards.â Mike says: âWhat I set out to do was record a swinging jazz instrumental album of standards that would be very listenable. I chose familiar songs that all have an upbeat and positive vibe.â  The playing on âHigh Standards is really great and makes cool background listening for parties or get-togethers. Itâs also a seriously impressive listen if you want to get deep into it. And thereâs a swingin' guitar duet on the album with Pachelliâs dear friend Kebâ Moâ on an original tune Mike wrote called âYardbird Blues.â Mike Pachelli has a wealth of musical experience gained thru years of night clubs, concert halls, recording studios and his studies with Joe Pass. He's performed all over the U.S. and Europe with some of the most eclectic jazz and blues artists including Brother Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith and Albert King. Guitarists all over the world are well aware of Pachelli's technical prowess and understanding of complex musical theories and harmonic juxtapositioning. "High Standards" is Mikeâs 18th album.
