Lusterware, Disillusionment and Discipleship
While sitting in a Sunday School class recently, listening to my LDS-scholar friend Calvin Burke teach, I was touched by an article he referenced, titled "Lusterware" in Wayfare magazine, written by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich. Dr. Ulrich is also LDS and won the Pulitzer prize for A Midwife's Tale. She is perhaps most famous for the quote "well behaved women seldom make history". Her article in Wayfare relates the following poem by Emily Dickinson, likens the poem to our faith journey, and then gives a brief history of lusterware:
It dropped so low— in my Regard— I heard it hit the Ground— And go to pieces on the Stones At bottom of my Mind— Yet blamed the Fate that flung it—less Than I denounced Myself, For entertaining Plated Wares Upon my Silver Shelf.—
Lusterware is a type of pottery, thinly glazed with metal. In the 1800's, a thin coating of platinum that made the piece appear to be solid silver became a popular, cheap option for the middle class. However, unlike solid silver, lusterware shatters if knocked off a shelf.
Lusterware pieces are the poem's 'Plated Wares'. They are beliefs, once held in high esteem and placed upon a 'Silver Shelf', that have fallen and shattered - proving that they never truly belonged there in the first place.
"Sooner or later," Dr. Ulrich writes, "most of us are forced to confront our shattered beliefs... There are lusterware missions and marriages, lusterware friendships, lusterware histories, and yes, lusterware visions of ourselves."
It is often in the testing, as a belief falls and shatters, or falls and remains true, that we learn the nuances of that which endures and that which was only previously assumed to endure. Dr. Ulrich continues:
"I read the nineteenth chapter of Leviticus and find the second greatest commandment, 'thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself,' side by side with a sober command that 'neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woolen come upon thee' (Leviticus 19:18–19). Every dispensation has had its silver and its lusterware."
"Sweeping up the lusterware, we sometimes forget to polish and cherish the silver, not knowing that the power of discernment is one of the gifts of the Spirit and that the ability to discover counterfeit wares also gives us the power to recognize the genuine."
The church and many of its members are in a period of testing, of looking for the true silver in different approaches to complex theological questions and practices. I have faith that God knows the answers, and have found it wise to embrace the second greatest commandment myself, even when others take actions that hurt me and those I care for. Perhaps, as has been too often the case in human history, it is ultimately the suffering of the innocent that will show the true path forward. We hope that the God who sees the fall of the sparrow will work all things together for our good, and that we may, as a people, find our way to that which matters most.
Love, Erran

Do you really believe the racist teachings in Mormonism involving the idea that sin makes people black?
I do not believe that, it's a terrible thing to have ever been taught. Also terrible is the belief that follows from this that if dark-skinned people join the church and repent, they will become "white and delightsome." That's a bunch of racist shit.
Many people see the light-skinned Nephites as the heroes and the dark-skinned Lamanites as the villains of the Book of Mormon. However, that's a false interpretation when considering the book in its entirety.
By the end of the book, the labels Nephite & Lamanite lose their association with color of skin as the two groups have intermixed. Instead, it's behavior which determines who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. Kind of makes one wonder if Brigham Young actually finished reading the Book of Mormon.
In addition to what it teaches about faith in Christ, the overarching lesson of the Book of Mormon is that wealth inequality & pride are the real dangers that doom civilizations and those who resort to violence and fail to care for the needy will dwindle in unbelief. And that's how the story ends, showing us the Nephites dwindling to nothing. The Nephites are not heroes, rather they are a cautionary tale.
Cal Burke, a friend of mine, summarizes the Book of Mormon as "a story about a large group of violently racist misogynists who thought they were better than everyone else, & wound up getting annihilated *explicitly because* they would not stop being violently racist misogynists. That's it, that's the plot."

A while back, a friend said she'd recently had a random thought that if Neal made a magic wish to be a kid again with Peter as his best friend, you'd essentially end up with Calvin and Hobbes. Which, tbh, has put a whole new spin on looking at and appreciating C&H. Then today, I ran across this. 😁

Tennessee Titans: Best/Worse Case Scenarios 2024 NFL Season
Bottom Line: This Team Will Be Better Than Most Expect
Themes:
• A: Development of Will Levis
• B: New Key Pieces
• C: Coaching Change/Culture Shift
Call it “homerism,” but being a small market NFL team often means being underestimated. However, if you’re not paying attention to the Tennessee Titans, you’re missing out. The Titans are doing what most teams do when they believe they’ve found their quarterback: building a solid roster around him and creating an environment for success. With a quietly strong roster on both sides of the ball—featuring an upgraded offensive line, a reinforced wide receiver room, and an improved secondary—this team is poised to win games this year, even with Mike Vrabel no longer at the helm. Before the mainstream media writes this team off, here are some key factors to consider:
A: New Key Pieces
Titans GM/VP of Football Operations Ran Carthon has had a stellar offseason, acquiring talent through the draft, free agency, and trades. Let’s break down the additions:
Free Agents/Trades:
• Calvin Ridley (WR)
• Lloyd Cushenberry (C)
• L’Jarius Sneed (CB)
• Chidobe Awuzie (CB)
• Tony Pollard (RB)
• Sebastian Joseph-Day (DT)
• Kenneth Murray (LB)
• Jamal Adams (S)
• Quandre Diggs (S)
• Tyler Boyd (WR)
Draft Picks:
• JC Latham (OL)
• T’Vondre Sweat (DL)
• Jaylen Harrell (LB)
• Jha’Quan Jackson (WR)
• Jarvis Brownlee (CB)
Clearly, this team is heading in a new direction, and I’m not mad at it. Times change, and the Titans are adapting. Pairing Ridley with Hopkins seems almost unfair, and when you add a solid receiver like Boyd along with Treylon Burks, who’s ready to take the next step, the wide receiver room is no longer among the league’s worst. All of this has been achieved without sacrificing the run game. Both Pollard and Spears can run the ball the way Callahan wants it done, and I believe they’ll prove their worth this season.
On the defensive side, the moves made almost brought tears of joy. Drafting T’Vondre Sweat, who is unbelievably fast and agile for his size, was a masterstroke. Sweat is a certified run-stopper and will also affect the passer, drawing double-teams a solid percentage of the time. Pairing him with Jeffery Simmons, who also requires double-teams, will force opposing offensive lines into some tough decisions. Adding a talented, budding linebacker like Kenneth Murray to an already physical Arden Key will secure the middle of the field and boost the pass rush.
Then there’s the secondary, which has been reinvigorated with the additions of Sneed, Awuzie, Adams, and Diggs, alongside preexisting talent like Elijah Molden and Roger McCreary. This group has the potential to lock down a lot of yardage this year. Bottom line: the Titans’ defense has improved significantly.
Before I forget, let’s talk about the offensive line. With the addition of first-round pick JC Latham and the continued development of Peter Skoronski under new offensive line coach Bill Callahan, this unit should be miles ahead of where it was last year. Improved blocking, especially from the right side of the line, has been a highlight of the preseason, addressing one of the major issues from last year.
B: Coaching Change/Culture Shift
Please note, I am not a Mike Vrabel hater. I appreciate everything he’s done for this franchise—instilling a culture of toughness and grit, leading the team to an AFC Championship run, and managing an injury-riddled roster. However, I acknowledge that change was needed. The league is evolving, and the Titans were at risk of being left behind.
Brian Callahan and his staff bring a fresh perspective, new energy, and a balanced approach to Nashville. Players are reportedly thrilled with new defensive coordinator Denard Wilson and offensive line coach Bill Callahan. The emphasis on physicality and toughness remains, but there’s also a focus on balance, which I believe will help the Titans adapt and thrive in this new era.
C: Development of Will Levis
One crucial factor for the team’s success is the continued development of second-year quarterback Will Levis. Levis showed a lot of promise last year, stepping in for the injured Ryan Tannehill and pushing the ball downfield with confidence. He clearly won the team over, and his growth will drive this team as far as it can go. With a strong supporting cast around him and improved protection, Levis has the tools to succeed.
One concern is Levis taking unnecessary hits. We get it—you’re tough. But we’d also like you to have a long, successful career. All in all, I believe he’s ready to take the next step.
Best Case Scenario:
In the best-case scenario, the offensive line gels quickly, Levis makes sound decisions, and the defensive line dominates early by stopping the run and pressuring the passer. If everything clicks, a 10-win season and a playoff berth are within reach.
Worst Case Scenario:
On the flip side, if the offensive line takes most of the regular season to figure things out, if Levis regresses, if the run game falters, and if the defense spends too much time on the field, the team could be exposed. An undisciplined, sloppy defense could result in a 6-7 win season, or worse, and no playoffs. However, I highly doubt that happens, given the personalities and talent on this team.
The Tennessee Titans are primed to surprise many this upcoming season. There’s a fresh energy, new vibes, and a modern approach in Nashville. The Titans are changing with the times, and as a fan, I couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come.

A-T-3 332 Party Season
Big records that have become perennial party 'jams' since there release in 1983
These first ones you will and have heard in every town bar and club and are guaranteed to get women up singing and dancing (Dj rule number 2 get the women dancing and the boys will follow.) They're as safe as a Wu-Tang t-shirt or Calvin Harris record, and all favourites with your average habitual BBC 6 Music listener
Rufus & Chaka Khan - Ain't Nobody this was released in November 1983 but didn't chart in the UK until March 1984. I'm not sure if this is because it had a later release date across the rest of the world the P+C's all read 1983 so that's no help. It's included on Greg Wilson's UK club floor fillers for 1983 and he'd know https://electrofunkroots.co.uk/greg-wilsons-top-10-floorfillers-december-83/

David Bowie - Let's Dance Nile Rodgers so much to answer for

Talking Heads - This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) not quite the draw to the floor the two above have maybe more of a sit down for Christmas cocktails and food, saying that I've seen it fill a dance floor many times if the clientele is middle-class enough. Talking Heads are almost as safe as Fleetwood Mac nowadays. The album Speaking In Tongues is released in 1983, it's lead single Burning Down The House didn't chart in the UK but tracks like those mentioned above and Girlfriend Is Better have become hugely popular through mainstream radio play. As a smart-arse I'd probably play Moon Rocks off the album, out. Wally Baradou's keyboard playing is brilliant on this album

Now here are a few soul night staples from 1983
O'Jays - Put Our Heads Together silk, and a complete D Train rip-off co-written and produced by Keni Burke of The Five Stairsteps
youtube
Fatback Band - I Found Lovin' only released as a single in the UK on a UK label, this'll be some UK rep saying to the label in the US I Found Lovin' off the With Love is blowing up in the clubs over here you have to put it out as a single and the US label not being arsed
youtube
So slightly less mainstream than the two above but these following tracks may find there way onto an 80s soul comp
D Train - Music (Remix) not as big or influential as D Train's Your The One For Me or Keep On, it still got to 23 on the UK's single chart which was better that the two tracks above. It also contains the 'M.U.S.I.C. Deep Inside Of Me' Sample which was huge, especially with British producers. Like all D Train's best tracks mixes come from François Kevorkian - the Dub Version is especially spacial

I'm filling up the remaining links from my Tumblr quota with still massive club hits and still on 80s soul comps but they are probably less known by a mainstream audience
Cuba Gooding - Happiness Is Just Around The Bend on the subject of samples popular with UK producers here's another big one that's to the acapella on the b-side. Main Ingredients singer and father of disgraced actor Cuba Gooding, Jr. produced Arthur Baker, arranged by Fred Zarr, sampler programmed by John Robie, and it's a cover of a Brian Auger track

Status IV - You Ain't Really Down - "You Just Ain't For Real" sample popular from the house days, yup there's an acapella on this one too. Written by Toney Lee who made Reach Up, produced Eric Mathew and again released on Matthew's Radar label
youtube
Tracy Weber - Sure Shot (Instrumental) another produced by Eric Matthew. Sure Shot originally came out in 1981 but this instrumental came out on the b-side of One Step At A time in 1983 - probably thanks to Larry Levan and the play he gave it at the Paradise Garage

Surface - Falling In Love big record, Shep Pettibone mix, never heard this version before
