It is ferried by NASA 905, a modified 747 aircraft. The crew inside the 747 was as follows: Pilot Joseph S. Algranti; Co-pilot Francis R. (Dick) Scobee; Flight Engineers Louis E. (Skip) Guidry Jr. and Glen O. Pingry. The frame was exposed by Bob Gray from the rear station of a nearby T-38 chase plane piloted by David L. Mumme. Bixby Bridge, CA (No. 3)

Over 300,000 board feet (700 m3) of Douglas fir timber, used to build a 250-foot (76 m) high falsework to support the arch during construction, was transported from the railroad terminal in Monterey over the narrow, one-way road to the bridge site. The falsework, built by crews led by E. C. Panton, the general superintendent, and I. O. Jahlstrom, resident engineer of Ward Engineering Co., was difficult to raise, because it was constantly exposed to high winds. Some of the falsework timbers were 10 by 10 inches (250 mm × 250 mm).[18] It took two months to construct the falsework alone. When high waves threatened the falsework foundation, construction was halted for a short time until winter storms abated.

The crews excavated 4,700 cubic yards (3,600 m3) of earth and rock. Eight hundred and twenty-five trucks brought in 600,000 pounds of reinforcing steel. Sand and gravel were supplied from a plant in Big Sur.

Construction required 45,000 sacks or 6,600 cubic yards (5,000 m3) of cement which was transported from Davenport, near Santa Cruz, and from San Andreas. Crews began placing concrete on November 27. The concrete was transported across the canyon on platforms using slings suspended from a cable 300 feet (91 m) above the creek.

The bridge was completed on October 15, 1932, although the highway was not finished for another five years. At its completion, the bridge cost $199,861 and, at 360 feet (110 m), was the longest concrete arch span on the California State Highway System. The bridge was necessary to complete the two-lane road which opened in 1937 after 18 years of construction. The completion of construction was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Dr. John L.D. Roberts, who had conceived of the need for the road.

this is gonna be about Nebuya’s parents and how he came to be born, and is my first time doing HCs so please bear with me :)

His dads name is Andwele/Andi and he is from Tanzania 🇹🇿 and his moms name is Alisha (idk, it’s giving that forme) and she is a black american and they met in middle school (american school system)

Alisha would bully tf out of Andi bc he was the new and he was not having so he kept the same energy but cussed her out in Swahili that shut her up

she liked that and tried to be friends with him afterwards AND IT WORKED by the time they hit 7th grade they became friends and he also taught her a bit of Swahili actually

When they got high-school they gained feelings for each other freshman year and they both knew this, Alisha was waiting on Andi to make the first move but she got impatient and just straight up asked him to be her boyfriend

he said yes while standing in shock like this: “😮”

they got together and became INSEPARABLE, you couldn’t see one w/o the other <3

After graduation and being awarded valedictorian and salutatorian (i’ll let you decide which one got what) Alisha, being the baddie she is, joined the Army and Andi went to college for Software Engineering

When Alisha when to basic training it was hard on them bc it was the first time they have been separated like this without any contact but being the strong willed people they are they got through it

After she got back from basic Andi surprised her with a trip to California Disney for completing the grueling training she went through (she cried up a storm) and he just needed a break from classes

On the last day of the trip they went to see the fireworks show at the castle and he proposed to her and she said yes 🥹

Right after the proposal Alisha got right to work on planning the wedding, Andi had no say in the wedding because he said he didn’t want to “ruin her special day”

BUT she made him pick the color scheme which was blue and white (WHICH ATE BTW)

After a 1 year and 6 months of planning, preparing, and being perplexed about the wedding and about being engaged they said “i do” and went straight into the honeymoon phase

BUTTT that didn’t last long because she got orders to be stationed in Tokyo, Japan which they were both very excited about.

They had 3 months to learn as much Japanese as they could and they learned enough to hold a small conversation

When they arrived to Japan, Alisha found out she was pregnant!!! (they wanted to keep the gender a secret) so she had to go on leave and stayed home which she could handle by herself

Andi at the time started a engineering job for one the top 7 software companies in japan, but don’t worry he still made time for Alisha and took care of her any way she needed

but he still felt bad about not being home enough so he bought a dog to keep Alisha company ( she was an Akita named Star)

By the time her 3rd trimester came they were very nervous about the birth

when i mean “they” i just mean Andi, Alisha had to smack him a couple times to get him to calm down and act straight

then one faithful morning Alisha’s water broke but she was didn’t notice so she was just peeing thinking she just drank too much fluids

Then Andi was like “girl your water broke” and she said “oh that makes sense🧍🏾‍♀️” and they went to hospital

When they got to the hospital (they are both fluent atp) and told the staff what they needed to get for Alisha

and alas OUR BIG BABY NEBUYA EIKICHI WAS BORN

And mean like 9 pounds 9 ounces big, he was a chunky baby (the BEST babies btw)

After the birth one of Alisha’s commanders said that they could move back to the states since Big E (yes that is his nebuya’s nickname)

But Alisha said “i am not about to leave a country when i spent months cramming the language in my head… we staying”

D. C. Messinger Contractor (Photo taken by me March 26, 2023)

There were many listings for Messinger’s work, mostly as a designer but earlier included some contracting. He was the designer and contractor for a residence for an Emma Thompson at 408 E. 66th St. He was a contractor with L. O. Fiscel (?) on a bungalow for Ruth Williams Ingraham in Washington Heights at Reservoir & Gladstone streets. At that time Fiscel & Messinger were located at 315 W. 61st Street. In the same year, he was released from a lien by National Lumber Company. (Southwest Contractor and Manufacturer, Volume 3, Engineers and Architects Association of Southern California, 1909.)

Messinger was located at 216 (and sometimes also 217) Bradbury Bldg in 1919. That year’s notices included designing two bungalows and garages on Hillcrest Terrace for D. H. Harrocks. Messinger “prepared the plans” for G. F. Sloan to build a “2-story 19-room hollow tile residence on Irving Blvd. near Sixth St. for J. E. Adams” and for a double bungalow to be built at “163 East Forth-seventh Place” for Chas. Roth, containing “two flats of four rooms and bath each” with “concrete foundation, redwood siding, shingle roof, pine trim, oak and pine floors, disappearing beds, water heaters, plumbing, wiring.” Messinger was designer and superintendent for the construction of a bungalow and garage (5 rooms) at 1239 Kenmore Ave. for A. M. Shaw (Southwest Builder and Contractor, p. 23, December 19, 1919).

He also “prepared plans for a 2-story frame and plaster flat building to be erected on Gramercy Place between 6th St. and Wilshire Blvd., for Gertrude R. Nash., was the designer for a bungalow and garage at 1839 N Van Ness Ave.,  and was the designer for a 2-story, 10-room resodemce at 857 S Bronson Ave.

By 1925, he had moved again to 1210 Taft Bldg. in Hollywood (some say that was the fictional Philip Marlowe’s office) and had “completed plans [to] build two-story, 6-stores, 12 offices at the northeast corner of Porter Ave. and Brand Blvd., San Fernando, for B.A. Munn” (Building and Engineering News, Volume 25, Issue 1, 1925).

Episode Transcript: March 17th, 2061, Sundance Bar

It’s August 16th, 2060, in Night City, California, and it’s Jane Doe’s thirtieth birthday. Thirty is a big milestone. Especially around these parts. Not everyone makes it that far. Most of us would be content to celebrate at home, surrounded by friends and family and maybe a cake picked up from the local Oasis-mart. The more adventurous among us might go for a night on the town. If you have money, you might visit a rooftop bar in Pacifica — I’ve heard Villa Nouva is particularly nice! It’s on a high rise tall enough to get you out of a lot of the smog — if not, maybe just a local joint, or a club. Few would willingly venture into the festering bowles of the combat zone, at least not anyone sane. You’d have to be a special type of adrenaline junkie to plunge straight first into the prowling grounds of Night City’s nastiest gangs and cartels. 

But Jane Doe wasn’t. Not by a long shot. Jane Doe was a Beavervillian. She grew up in the suburbs with a white picket fence, went to NCU to study engineering, got a stable job at Rocklin Augmentics, moved up the corporate ladder until she was solidly middle management. She had probably been in the combat zone maybe five times in her whole life, if even. So it begs the question: why on earth would Jane Doe — country-club corpo kid Jane Doe — of all people, choose to spend the night of her thirtieth not at her executive zone con-apt, not a fancy Marina boardwalk strip, not even at Pacifica Playground, but in the middle of the god-damned combat zone?

Garden Patch Kids, I know you hate it when I do this, but I have to start the episode with a quick disclaimer. This case is high profile. I’m talking high high profile. And after the legal fiasco with the California Kitchen Killings last year, I’m really not looking to get sued. So, just keep in mind, all of this is alleged. I’ve also given all identifiable people and places pseudonyms, so please respect the victim’s privacy. Anyways, do as the show says, and take all of this with a grain of salt. Let’s get into it. 

If you ever find yourself in Little China, there are a few places you can go where you’re less likely to be caught in a gang war — that’s not to say you won’t be caught in a gang war, it’s Night City, but the chance is less. The Sundance Bar, as I’m going to call it, is among them. 

Sundance Bar is the go-to spot for all you corpo-rats looking to chase serious thrills without getting into serious danger. This place is the ultimate vice-den, let me tell you. It’d make even your hot alt input clutch their pearls. But this place is popular. Line out the door and around the block popular. You better be rich, famous, or smoking hot if you want to get in on a Friday night. Good thing Jane Doe’s birthday was on a Monday, so they would actually admit her. Or maybe not so good. Not so good, indeed. I want to be clear when I say this, because we’re not here to slander victims, so you all should know that Jane Doe was not a junkie. Sure, sometimes she’d microdose speed at work — but let’s be honest, who high up on the corporate ladder hasn’t — and sure, she liked to get loose sometimes, but she wasn’t a junkie. She was just your standard, fun-loving, thrill-seeking choom. Jane Doe’s friends, though? They would have called her a junkie. They were prudes. Real stick in the mud, what crawled up your ass and died, types. Someone could be drinking smash and they’d turn up their nose and scoff like bougie aristocrats. So going to Sundance with her friends was kind of a no-go. And Jane Doe wasn’t social enough to find a new crew to join her bar-hopping for a night. Especially not since she broke up with her mainline of 5 years. Our girl was going through it. 

But of course, she really wanted to go to this bar. Dead set on it, heh. We’re not entirely sure why? Some of her friends on the patch claim she wanted to meet a celebrity who frequented the place. Personally, I think she just wanted to go and get wasted in her best dress surrounded by hot people and blasting music. Whatever her motivation was, though, Jane Doe went to the bar alone. She told a few of her friends she’d be going — she wasn’t an idiot. She took the N-cart in with her nice heels and some hangover-cure in her bag. She was last seen by the CCTV walking down East Water Street in a sparkly black cocktail number at 9:13 PM. She would not come out of the bar again. A lot of people really want to know just what happened to Jane Doe inside Sundance. After all, that’s kind of the juicy part of the story, right? But in all my research, and trust me, I did a lot, I could not find a single person who had any clue what went down that night besides the usual bar affairs. In fact, I went to the place myself, scoped it out, and I was pretty unsuccessful in finding anything too strange. I did see that the mirrors in the bathroom were all two sided, but that’s not super unusual in these types of places. Anyways, point is, we have no clue what happened in that bar. 

What we do know, however, is that Jane Doe went radio silent following her 30th. Garden Patch Kids, you know when you have someone you talk to daily, and suddenly, you’re not hearing from them for a little bit? Some of you might freak out after the first day, but I’d say most of us don’t start to worry until we see that they’ve been inactive for a week or so. Stuff comes up in people’s lives, sometimes you’re just not on the phone. But the thing about Jane Doe was that she didn’t really have people she spoke with on a daily basis. Her job was cushy enough that she could live alone in her executive zone con-apt, she had just broken up with her mainline, they weren’t exactly on speaking terms, she called her family maybe once a month. It took two weeks for anyone to file a missing person’s case. How come? Jane Doe was using the PTO she’d saved up to take some time off around her birthday. It wasn’t until a few days after her vacation expired that her job got antsy enough to send their lackeys to her door and drag her into work. Only, when they got to her house, she wasn’t in it. And it’s not like it looked like she had freshened it up in preparation for some long trip. Her car was still in the driveway, she had leftovers in the almost fully-stocked fridge, her laundry hamper was packed with clothes, she still had suitcases in her closet. Rocklin reached out to her family, called every line they could, sent emails. Nothing. Nada. Poof! She disappeared. 

Her parents find out about the whole missing thing, and they obviously freak the fuck out. They file a missing persons report and they’re all up in the lawmen’s faces asking every question under the sun about how the investigation is going. At first it seems like they’re making really good progress. They find a string of text messages between Jane Doe and her mainland about a week before her disappearance. Jane wants to come over and get her designer handbags back. It’s hers, and it’s expensive, and she wants it. When her mainline tells her no, quite firmly, she calls them a bitch. It’s an ugly conversation. The cops speculate that maybe, drunk and under the influence of whatever cocktail of substances she consumed that night, she went over to her ex’s, got into a tussle, and left with a body bag in place of her Prada. 

But the issue is that Jane Doe didn’t show up on the CCTV footage leaving the place. For all they know, she’s still inside Sundance. But the lawmen, for whatever reason, they’re hung up on this whole mainline thing. They keep hounding this angle, but it becomes increasingly clear that they’re making no progress. And eventually, after a few months of this, the cops just give up. “You’re daughter’s probably dead. Deal with it.” Not their exact words, but that’s definitely what it must have sounded like to her parents. 

So her parents go to Garden-Patch and start a little awareness campaign, hoping to raise some funds to hire a private detective. They get about a couple hundred eddies into their campaign when they shut it down. That garden patch just gets deleted, out of nowhere. And suddenly, they stop posting anything about their daughter. They’re still active on their accounts, it’s not like they disappeared or anything, but it’s a strange shift. Call me a conspiracist, but I’m finding it incredibly suspicious. Especially with the fancy body-mods they started getting not even a full year later. 

Unfortunately, that’s kind of where our story ends. With minisodes like this, things can be a bit abrupt. We really don’t know what happened to Jane Doe; there are a bunch of conspiracies, of course, but I’m not here to get into those. But oh! This Sundance place. It has a bit of a reputation. Jane Doe wasn’t the only corpo-kid to get whisked away after going there, at least allegedly. Today we remember the passing of D. Boon(27 Club) who Died: December 22, 1985 in Tucson, Arizona

Dennes Dale "D." Boon was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Boon was best known as the guitarist and vocalist of the American punk rock trio Minutemen. In 1985 he was killed in a van crash at the age of 27.

Dennes Boon was born in San Pedro, California, on April 1, 1958. His father, a navy veteran, worked installing radios in Buick cars, and the Boons lived in former World War II barracks that had been converted into public housing.

According to childhood friend and future bandmate Mike Watt, Boon was unfamiliar with popular music and had grown up listening to Buck Owens and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Watt introduced Boon to Blue Öyster Cult and The Who. Urged by Boon's mother, Boon and Watt began to learn to play instruments. They learned to play by copying songs from their favorite bands' records. Boon took a few lessons from local teacher Roy Mendez Lopez who taught him rock as well as flamenco and classical.

As a teenager, Boon began painting and signed his works "D. Boon", partly because "D" was his slang for cannabis, partly after Daniel Boone, but mostly because it was similar to E. Bloom, Blue Öyster Cult's vocalist and guitarist.

Boon formed his first band with Watt in 1978, The Reactionaries. The band's members were lead vocalist Martin Tamburovich, Boon on guitar, bassist Watt, and drummer George Hurley. The Reactionaries existed for most of 1978 and 1979, practicing regularly but rarely if ever performing live.

After only seven months, Boon and Watt broke the band up feeling that the traditional frontman-style band was "bourgeois".

Boon formed Minutemen in January 1980 with Mike Watt on bass and Frank Tonche on drums. Tonche was soon replaced by former Reactionaries drummer George Hurley. Their best-known album is Double Nickels on the Dime.

The Minutemen continued until December 22, 1985, when Boon was killed in a van accident in the Arizona desert on Interstate 10. Because he had been sick with fever, Boon was lying down in the rear of the van without a seatbelt when the rear axle broke and the van ran off the road. Boon was thrown out the back door of the van and died instantly from a broken neck. He was 27 years old. Boon’s death caused the band to immediately dissolve, though Watt and Hurley would form the band Firehose soon after. The live album Ballot Result was released in 1987, two years after Boon's death.

Since the first Firehose album, Mike Watt has dedicated every record he has worked on – be it Firehose, solo, or otherwise – to D. Boon's memory. A song on Watt's semi-autobiographical 1997 album Contemplating the Engine Room, "The Boilerman," is about D. Boon; on the recording itself, guitarist Nels Cline plays one of Boon's last Telecaster guitars, which Watt is in possession of. Watt also mentions his fallen friend in Firehose's "Disciples of the 3-Way" (Mr. Machinery Operator) and his own "Burstedman" (The Secondman's Middle Stand).

Boon has been paid tribute by American alternative band Stigmata-A-Go-Go with the song "D. Boon," from its 1994 album It's All True, Uncle Tupelo with a different song "D. Boon" from its 1991 album Still Feel Gone, and Centro-matic's song "D.Boon-Free (A Ninth Grade Crime)" off The Static vs. The Strings Vol. 1. His story is also told in the documentary We Jam Econo.

In 2003, former D. Boon roommate Richard Derrick released the CD D. Boon and Friends, a collection of jam session tapes he recorded with D. Boon, and rare Boon solo performances, as the first release on his Box-O-Plenty Records label. Mike Watt authorized the release and provided technical assistance and liner notes.

He is #89 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time: David Fricke's Picks.

In his review of the band's last album, music critic Robert Christgau described the death of Boon as "a rock death that has for wasted potential Lennon and Hendrix for company," adding that "after seven fairly amazing years he was just getting started. Shit, shit, shit."

B A C K G R O U N D – ( cw : death )

edwin didn’t have a very noteworthy childhood .  he basically just did what other kids did , go to school , hang out with other kids , spend time with his family , etc. and his parents were more than supportive of whatever he wanted to be ( though they’d drop an occasional hint here and there about becoming a doctor or a lawyer or an engineer , etc. ) .  but honestly , he had a great childhood . middle school and high school was no different .  he was on the honor roll , a player on the varsity tennis team , and he was the kind of guy that had his own friend group but was loved by everyone .

after graduating from high school , he attended uc berkeley for their architecture program .  sure , he wasn’t getting a medical degree or a j.d. but his parents knew that he loved it and were just glad his passions would still provide him with a relative stable income .

he met his (now ex) wife at berkeley .  they shared a physics class together and ended up becoming really good friends before finally deciding to date at the beginning of their sophomore year .  to say he was absolutely in love with her would be an understatement .  he would’ve done practically anything for her , including move to seattle after getting his masters in architecture .  as much as he didn’t want to leave his family , he knew that it was close enough to go home for holidays and other family events but far enough to really let him live his own life .

the two got married pretty soon after edwin got his masters so that they could still have the ceremony in san francisco and have the entire chu clan there .  they then moved to seattle and began their life together .  almost a decade later , he and his wife found out they were expecting a child .  with them both at a stable point in their careers and their lives , they couldn’t have been happier . right before their son , maxwell , was born , they decided to move back to san francisco for a year or two to help with the transition ( and to give the grandparents quality time with the baby ) .  and it was all so wonderful .  until it wasn’t .

some time after maxwell turned 1 , there were some medical complications and he ended up passing away .  the death took a toll on everyone , but especially edwin and his wife .  for two years , they tried to make it work between them but they came to the conclusion that it wasn’t something they could work through together , at least not romantically .  they decided to file for divorce and surprisingly , it actually helped them get closer as friends .  they allowed themselves to continue grieving their son and together they helped each other start to recover .

however , with what would have been their son’s fifth birthday ( along with the anniversary of his death ) coming up , his ex-wife saw how stressed and anxious edwin was getting .  neither anniversary had been particularly easy for them but she was growing more and more worried about edwin .  he was throwing himself into his work , taking on project after project and not taking care of himself .  so she forced told him to take a break .

NOW :  and that’s how he ended up at stowe ski resort in taos , new mexico .  his ex-wife had recommend the place , saying that a close friend of hers thought it was a perfect place to go to when people wanted to shut themselves from the outside world .  he’s been here for a few weeks now and after many unsuccessful attempts at skiing and snowboarding , he’s mostly stuck to just walking around the resort and stress cooking in his apartment .

a ball of nervous dad energy .  he’s incredibly friendly , though he’s a bit more reserved now than he used to be .  but he’ll never be rude !!

wardrobe leans a little too close to business casual .  khaki pants and button ups / collared shirts .  when he goes on walks , he’s got like a big trench coat because even though san francisco and seattle aren’t sunny beach towns or anything , they’re still much warmer than taos during the winter season .

loves people but sometimes he just gets overwhelmed and has to leave a crowded situation tbh .

he tends to ‘dad’ people , whatever that means .  sometimes it’s annoying , sometimes it’s sweet but it really depends on the situation .

can’t sing for shit BUT if you get him drunk enough , he’ll do it .  decent dancer though , but the most he’s ever really danced was at his wedding with his ex-wife lol

big tea guy !  not so much a coffee connoisseur but his ex-wife is so he learned how to use all those fancy contraptions – pourovers , moka pots , french presses , aeropresses , etc.
