Morning’s are tough without Jane but Buster keeps me going. Right on time, I hear the little guy whining and trying to get into the room. Jane doesn’t typically like dogs on the bed but since she’s away I have let him on once or twice… or more. Sorry Jane! I picked up an overtime shift today to get prepared for the week as we are installing the arena board for the new ice arena in downtown Calgary. Wake up time was 5:45, so after snoozing the clock for 10 more minutes, I get my day going. I start breakfast, let Buster outside for a run and bathroom break. Buster and I eat our breakfast at the same time. Kibble for the boy, and a bagel with cream cheese and coffee for me.

We got a huge dump of snow last night, everything was white and frosty out. This remote engine start up feature on the truck is pretty wicked. It has saved me so many times already.. and it’s only November. I grabbed all my tools, equipment and my hockey gear, because after this work shift I had a beer league game.

Jeff, our neighbour was clearly doing the same thing I was doing this morning and trying to get a head start on the roads, but unfortunately his little Honda Civic couldn’t make it through, and he had slipped off the road a bit. I threw him a hand and got his car out. Poor fella barely made it 20 feet past his drive.

Work has been quite exciting since I get to work on the new arena that the Calgary Flames will play at. Seeing the arena in its barebones before it all comes together is so surreal. I can't wait to go to the games, especially when its playoffs and the entire arena is sold out and in all red. Hopefully they start doing good soon...

After work I head to the University of Calgary to get ready with the team. Traffic was a bit brutal but, I got to the arena 20 minutes late so I ended up missing the first period. No sweat, I easily came out on the second period and got the boys going with scoring our first goal cutting the lead in half as we were down 2-0 when I got on the ice. We ended up in a tie and had to go into overtime. Do or die… what did we do? We did the damn thing, scored in overtime with a beautiful slap shot from the blue line.

I got out of the rink fairly quickly to get home and feed Buster and myself before we head off to the airport to pick up Jane. Seeing our pictures on the wall when I got home made me so excited I could hardly contain myself. We'll get to put some wood in the fireplace and cozy up all together. On the way to the airport I was jamming out to the radio, and just remembered what it felt like to have Jane by my side and how life is so Sweet.

Well, since you asked...(I've had caffeine, prepare for babbling)

If you like drier air, trees, and don't mind cold, Edmonton Alberta might suit you, or surrounding areas. Lots of acreages around the city, as well as smaller places like Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Leduc, Fort Saskatchewan, and Devon. They're all within an hour driving distance to Edmonton.

Keep in mind that something like 70% of Alberta's roads are unpaved. The ones to and from major urban centres are paved, but they go to gravel fast. Lots of large trucks roam the streets.

The city itself is the capital (although Calgary is larger by a little bit) and has about a million people. Edmonton is a city that feels like a town. It has the largest urban forest, mostly elms, and a HUGE river valley that's about 10x the size of Cenral Park, NY. The river valley and its offshoots (like Mill Creek Ravine) have walking paths, staircases, and off-leash dog areas. A funicular was just installed recently to provide access to the river valley to those who are differently abled.

Thinking of differently abled, the city is made to be accessible with wide doorways, ramps, mechanical doors, dropped curbs, and handicapped parking in every parking lot. All public washrooms must have a handicapped stall as well.

Like I said above, it's dry. The cartilage in your nose may crack in the deep winter. And your fingers. Body cream is your friend. The last couple of summers have been wet with excessive rainfall, but that just means there's a dry spell coming. Judging from the lack of snow this year, I'd say this summer will be dry. But even with the rain we still don't normally have a humidex warning.

Summers get hot though. Dry, sauna hot. In the neighbourhood of +35C for a couple of weeks. But the average is around +25C. Winters are cold (except this one, it's been ridiculously warm until last week) and get to -35C. Overnight lows can go below -40C but not often, and maybe for about two weeks. You'll learn how to layer your clothes.

The farther north you go in the province (Cold Lake, Fort McMurray, Peace River) the colder it gets in the winter. The winds from Siberia come up over the north pole and dump onto northern/central Alberta. You REQUIRE a block heater for your car. If you don't plug your car in, it probably won't start.

Because of the 70 degree temperature difference, the infrastructure is under constant maintenance. A realistic joke is that Edmonton has three seasons: almost winter, winter, and construction. The winters begin when the permafrost rises in October (it can snow before Halloween) and ends usually in March but can stick around until April.

The growing season is short, if you have a veggie garden. A rule of thumb is that nothing gets planted outside until Victoria Day weekend (third Monday in May). You can start stuff indoors though.

The barometric pressure does change, my arthritis is a testament to that, but not severely. Usually in April I feel every bit of arthritis, but only for a day or two.

Southern Alberta is very windy, Lethbridge and Calgary have the worst of it, I think. Edmonton has high winds, but only for a short time.

Do you like festivals? When covid isn't buggering up everything, there's about 50ish festivals per year, possibly more. I can't possibly list them all but chances are if you like something there's a festival for it.

Cannabis is legal in Canada. Each province was allowed to choose how to make it available to the public. Alberta chose online ordering as well as brick and mortar shops. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a cannabis store. Or a liquor store. Or a church, actually.

Farther south is Calgary, about a three hour drive away. It's near the mountains and has moister air and rapidly changing climate. South of Calgary you'll find Jasper and Banff at the base of the Rocky Mountains, both excellent for winter activities like skiing, snowboarding, and sitting in front of a fireplace with hot chocolate while you watch people ski and snowboard.

Canada?

Humidity and barometric pressure changes are the biggest factors when it comes to where i can take my parents.

Mom has lung issues with humidity, and so do i if it's over 70%. She also has rheumatoid arthritis and seizures, both of which don't like barometric pressure changes.

Cold doesn't bother us, especially since we can stay in a small area and heat just that area. We don't have a problem with getting snowed in.

My parents have lived in Rochester and Buffalo New York so they have experience living in high snow areas with bad wind factor and icy roads. I don't, but I'm a quick study and they'll help.

Another easy thing to work with is my mom and i keep a pantry with 6-18 months of supplies including canning, vacuum sealing, and freezing, most of what we eat being shipped to us from places I've been using for years. We even have drinking water stored.

We also don't mind waiting for things - areas that don't have immediate convenience like big cities offer are fine like no local stores and no overnight/quick shipping. Waiting even weeks to get something delivered is fine.

We'd actually prefer being in a rural area. None of us like city life or being close enough to neighbors that we can hear all their crap.

We'll be getting a vehicle that can handle rough areas.

Mom would really like lots of trees in the area, but she understands more trees can mean more humidity so tons of trees aren't a must.
