Cakes da Killa
Black Sheep
====
I've been following Cakes da Killa for a long time now. I saw him back in 412 with Mykki Blanco and then partied with them afterwards. I have a great respect for him and the quality of music he puts out. He brings something different to queer rap. The first track goes right in, loungy/jazz which is awesome. His lyrics are clear and keep me interested. All around a good project.

New Cakes da Killa.
Cakes da Killa makes house music but really he’s one of the few people keeping the classic components alive by not stripping it for parts.
First track, Do Dat Baby is a moody, sexy collaboration with electropop queen, Dawn Richard. I think I’m not fully awake enough to appreciate the sex appeal of the track. I know it’s good but it’s also 5:00am. Dawn Richard is a hometown hero of mine and can do no wrong. I loved hearing the two of them together. There’s clever back and forth towards the end of the song that had me smiling big. It was over far too soon. It’s a cool ass song.
The second track, Mind Reader is uptempo and has the big background vocals which are fantastic. I’m unfamiliar with featured artist STOUT but sis hooting and hollering, I love that. Honestly need that. As we all know, new dance tracks have been missing this component which is why most of its pop imitations fall flat to me. Not this, though. You have the classic combination of a talented deep voice rapping over the main beat while an absolute powerhouse threads through the background like a speedskater showing off. She’s blowing. She woke it up. Need more of this.
Artist, STOUT(Denise Reneé)
Cakes lyrical content in both tracks is in line with his style. Very clever, seeming like the most unbothered yet coolest mf ever. There’s an ease to him. He’s not doing too much. It’s just a nice vibe and there’s always a nice theming to the tracks. The production on both tracks is lovely. Do Dat Baby track goes round and round, you can definitely add it to your amorous playlists.
I was hugely anticipating this drop bc he doesn’t drop often, seemingly not interested in the new unrealistic pace of music releases. Overall this was such a nice experience. I adore Cakes da Killa and a mainstream pop stars slowly move away from this dance track resurgence, it’s nice to know Cakes will be there feeding the people because he does this shit for real.
