#Caitlyn needs a hug

I was trying to find an image from S2 with Cait smiling... And I realized that this is the only time she smiles. In the whole season.

Not one other time.

It's been months for her. The release it must have been, to be so at ease that she could crack a little joke; huff a little laugh. Caitlyn's been angry, overwhelmed, scared, greiving, distant... but this is the first time in a LONG time that we have seen her happy.

The REAL reason Arcane is a tragedy is because all of these characters were a unique kind of freak, and unfortunately, none of those freaks were matching. No complimentary freak. Incoming: a post on grief and grieving.

Part personal experience, part Arcane character study. Bit of both.

I didn't cry at my dad's funeral.

I couldn't tell you exactly why - maybe it was the shock; maybe I was still processing. Maybe it was the crowd. Everyone there - family and friends - knew me, knew I was his daughter, and expected for me to be broken and weeping.

But I couldn't do it.

Years later, watching Cassandra Kiramman's funeral hit me so, so hard. Seeing Caitlyn fighting that edge, breathing through it, holding back her tears - it just devestated me.

I'm not trying to compare the two situations - they were very different. My dad wasn't murdered by my kidnapper and the deranged sister of my romantic interest, for example, and I wasn't poised to inherit the family name, governance, and the weight of two cities.

But I was Caitlyn's age (a little younger, actually), and it was sudden, and I remember standing in front of the crowd and fighting it all back.

It was a contradiction: I didn't want to cry. But at the same time, I did. I remember the guilt licking up along my spine - seeing my mother and sister weeping, and just feeling... empty. Was I a bad daughter?- Who doesn't cry at their own parent's funeral? What would people think - that I didn't care? I did - desperately.

Look how close she gets to that edge.

You can see it - this is one of those places where the expressions just shine so clearly, expressing more than any line of dialogue could express. She is fighting off tears, so close to breaking; and I wonder, as I wondered about myself, if it's because she doesn't want to cry, or because she can't.

And I wonder if she felt that guilt. What sort of a child doesn't cry at their own parent's funeral? Would people think that she didn't care about Cassandra?

The truth of it, as I've come to think of it over the years, is that there is no right way to grieve.

"There are things... thoughts and reactions I had that I couldn't understand or even try to explain to anyone else. Thoughts that... made me feel like I was losing it... or, like I was some kind of horrible person. I know it's different for you... because it's always different." -Tara Maclay, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (S5e16)

You are not wrong for feeling the feelings you do.

And in the end, Vi was right (it figues that she'd have some wise words regarding sudden parental death) - the hole gets smaller, but it never goes away.

I know that sounds bleak, but there's something strangely comforting in it, too.

Glass Cage

You feel disconnected from the world around you. You can see everything, everyone can see you, but you're not really there. No one can really communicate with you, can they? You're isolated, even when you're around people you're alone.  You want desperately to be close to someone, but you're afraid of what will happen if you shatter your glass prison. You don't want to let someone in, you don't want to leave, and it's a constant battle of your own will.  It's easier to be alone, where no one can hurt you... Isn't it?

Aesthetically, I agree Cait would dig the look, but on a more serious note I think she'd actually find it a painful reminder of her own guilt and regret. Like, Vi looks fine af here, but also... she does not look well. Her cheeks are almost gaunt; her skin is pale; her chest is wrapped tight; she has bruises and cuts everywhere.

The makeup, the hair, the physical signs of self-neglect... I think that, however hot she may find it, Caitlyn hates seeing Vi like this.
