About: There are spoilers ahead for Unwind and UnWholly. After the attack on the airplane graveyard, Connor and Lev are on the run and headed back to Ohio in search of answers on the beginning of unwinding. Risa is adrift after publicly denouncing Proactive Citizenry, the organization determined to keep unwinding a lucrative business. Cam is determined to bring it down from the inside, convinced that its destruction will bring Risa back to him. All four of their paths will overlap, and while they may not all be friends, together they might be able to end unwinding forever. Trigger warnings: death/child death, some torture, child abuse, mental/emotional abuse, severe injury, abduction, racism, ableism, slurs, threats, grief, drug use.

Thoughts: This is kind of... more of the same. That's fine because I love the characters and the universe, so I'm happy to follow them around doing, you know, whatever, but I can see it being a problem for readers who enjoy a faster pace and more plot (which I suspect is a large demographic for the first novel). It's obvious this was never really intended to be a four-book series, and while UnSouled is tied into all the overarching plot and issues of the previous books, it lacks much of a plot of its own. Connor, Lev, and Risa are still chasing down answers on the history of unwinding, meanwhile facing the problems of being nationally recognized fugitives. The conflicts are realistic, but they're relatively small-scale compared to the first two books or the series as a whole.

Further, there's some pacing issues for roughly the first half of the book. The problem with breaking characters off into different directions is that Shusterman has to spend over half the novel bringing them back together. The United States is a big freaking country; it takes a long damn time to get from one side to the other if you have to stay off the radar and have next to zero resources. It's a little nonsensical to bring Connor and Lev together into an alliance that doesn't pan out. I suspect Lev's detour will be indispensable to the last book, but it's weird here. I'm also mad that Connor and Risa are denied the reunion we ALL deserved, and we were cheated out of them running into each other's arms.

All these random observations aside, I always enjoy digging deeper into this world and into these characters. If there’s a theme to this book in particular, it might be unintended consequences, as every single action (even the well-meaning, like lowering the legal unwinding age to seventeen) has them. Putting Cam in the middle forces every single character to adjust, and I was glad to see what my boy CyFi has been up to. (No mention of Miracolina though? I know what happened to her at the end of UnWholly, but she doesn't resurface here. Characters disappear sort of randomly from book to book.) I also really like Grace, who reads neurodivergent and is constantly underestimated for it, despite being hands down the best strategist of the team. The end revelation is pretty obvious from a distance, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. It's obvious because this world is so well-developed and so terrifyingly realistic that we can see where it's going because that's precisely what would happen in real life. My rating is more for the series as a whole than this particular book, but I stand by my opinion that they're some of the smartest, most relevant YA out there.

So I’ve been reading the unwind dystology with my girlfriend and... (SPOILERS DUH)

So me and my girlfriend have recently been reading the unwind dystology and we’ve just finished unsouled and I’ve decided I’m going to live blog my reactions about Undivided the last book in the series! These summaries of my reactions of the books will contain spoilers so read at your own risk!

Book 1 Unwind: So my first reaction to this dystopian world of killing children instead of talking to them like normal fucking people and sorting out your god damn problems was quite tame I thought the beginning with Conner and his then “girlfriend” was sweet up until the soul crushing, heart stomping betrayal. As I got to know the other characters I didn’t very much care for Risa but some info about her she’s a orphan who lives in a state home (or staho) and is a pretty snobby character in the beginning that you come to love. She’s basically a piano prodigy but one slip up a song makes her teacher decide “yeah you aren’t good enough so UNWIND” so she’s put in a bus with a bunch of other unwinds and that bus gets hit by Conner because y’know PLOT CONVENIENCE. Lev was great in his introduction in my opinion, this new perversion of religions with willfully giving your children away very much unsettled me because Y’KNOW GOD TOTALLY WANTS YOUR CHILD THAT EARLY AND YOU PROGRAM THIS SHIT INTO THEIR HEADS “YEAH SON WE’RE JUST GONNA GIVE YOU AWAY LIKE A PIG TO THE SLAUGHTER CUZ WE HAVE TOO MANY FUCKING KIDS AND APPARENTLY CAN’T PUT A CONDOM ON” (that rant was for all of tithing not just lev’s family). Anyway continuing on. On the way to lev’s tithing the bus crash from earlier stops the and Conner takes Lev hostage WHICH IS ONE OF THE BEST INTERACTION IN THE BOOK. So later on Conner shoots a cop with a tranq gun and this for some reason transforms him into a sociopath in later books who’s got a fetish for eyes and an even bigger fetish for killing Conner SO THATS FUN!! The book continued on like any normal YA dystopian book UNTIL SHIT HITS THE GOD DAMN FAN WHEN DUMBFUCK CONNER DECIDES TO PICK UP A STORKED BABY BECAUSE “muh past fucked me up”. ANYWAY so Conner and Risa go to old fuck McShadypast’s antique shop and become stowaways for 500 fucking chapters(seriously this shit takes way too long in my opinion) AND THEN WE MEET PRETTY BOI CREAM OF THE CROP GOD. DAMN. ROLAND REAL TALK THO I FUCKING HATE HIM AND HE GOT WHAT WAS COMING TO HIM. ANYWAY During this bum fuck mess of a book lev has wandered his dumb ass and gotten mixed up with a umber (black) boy named Cirus Finch or Cyfi ! Cyfi is one of the best written characters in the book and basically a genius with a Kleptomaniac stuck in his head. This leads on to ONE OF THE SADDEST CHAPTERS IN THE BOOK WITH CIFY GOING TO THE KLEPTOS PARENTS HOUSE AND THE KLEPTO BEGGING HIS PARENTS NOT TO UNWIND HIM AFTER DIGGING UP STOLEN JEWLERY FROM HIS BACKYARD. So we’re back Conner and Risa and they’ve been fucking PACKED into possibly deadly airtight containers for “safety” and they arrive at a dingy shitty airplane graveyard called THE GRAVEYARD HOW FUCKING CREATIVE. It is there they meet a old man called “The admiral” who cut his son into a million fucking pieces because “Character development”. So we’re skipping a few chapters and basically to sum it up ROLANDS A SHITHEAD WHO IS GAINING POWER AND IS LOOKING FOR EVERY OPPURTUNITY TO KILL CONNER AND/OR FRAME HIM FOR THE MURDER OF SO OF THE TOP STAFF OF THE GRAVEYARD LEV MAKES IT TO THE GRAVEYARD TOO AND FUCKS AROUND BEING ALL SUSPICIOUS AND VOLLUNTEERS TO GO TO SOME BUMFUCK NO WHERE PLACE TO GET AWAY FROM THE GRAVEYARD AND BASICALLY BECOMES WHAT I LIKE TO CALL THE “JAZZ HANDS TERRORIST” WHERE IF YOU CLAP OR SIMPLY BUMP INTO SOMEONE YOU GO UP LIKE A M80 ON CRACK SO WE CUT FOREWARD AND LEV AND TWO OTHER USELESS CANNON FODDER CHARACTERS DECIDE TO TAKE THE PLUNGE AND DIE FOR THIS “CAUSE” BUT IT TURNS OUT LEV CANT CLAP BECAUSE HE WANTS TO HE WITH CONNER AND RISA SO IN THE END CONNER LOSES AN ARM AND IN THE ULTIMATE ACT OF IRONY IT TURNS OUT ROLAND DIED AND CONNER GOT HIS ARM :DDDDDDDDD AND RISA ALSO BROKE HER SPINE BECAUSE A BEAM FELL ON HER AND REFUSED AN UNWINDS SPINE LEAVING HER PARALYZED SO YEAH THATS ALL OF BOOK 1

DISPITE IT SOUNDING LIKE I DIDNT ENJOY THE BOOK IT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE DYSTOPIAN YA BOOKS AND I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU ALL READ IT BECAUSE I ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH!
