As a heads up I have been playing with him just to make sure everything looks good in game so he might have some stuff on him. I tried to remove everything that I can think of (relationships, skills, hidden traits, etc.) but it's possible I missed something.

Endangered Poets & CyFi - North Star

2022-03-24

Dedicated in loving memory of Jordan Lilgreen, the shorter half of the Endangered Poets. He would’ve been turning 32 the day this album was released.

These songs were mostly written in 2014 and 2015, when Jordan, Shane and I all went to Minneapolis Media Institute. Jordan befriended me one day in November 2014 when I was playing some of my instrumentals on the big speakers in one of the studios. I met Shane shortly after that. When they released their debut EP “Cold Front” in February 2015, we got the idea of doing a collab album together. For lack of a better metaphor, I kinda wanted to be the Ryan Lewis to their Macklemore. Some of these songs are recreations/re-recordings of stuff on their Basement Tape mixtape. The original plan in the mid-‘10s was to pump all those out first, then start writing new material to follow it up.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get much new stuff written in the (unknown to us) limited time we had left with Jordan. After he and Shane moved to Colorado, it was much harder to get all three of us in the same room regularly. (The three new songs he recorded ARE on this album!) In fact, this album likely would not exist if I hadn’t stayed in Colorado for 3 weeks on a whim in July 2018. That was when the majority of it was recorded, in Shane’s apartment.

The day I learned of Jordan’s passing, I dove into these recordings just to hear his voice again. I’m surprised I didn’t break down sobbing while polishing up these songs for release…I really fucking miss him. Maybe working on this album was part of my grieving process, I dunno. Jordan would’ve wanted us to finish North Star and release it, that’s why we’re doing so. The final song on the album is a tribute to him I started writing on my flight home from his funeral. I love you, buddy. I hope you’re able to hear this from wherever you may be.

1. The Mission

Given the title of the song, I was going for a sort of epic science fiction vibe with my instrumental...think rockets launching into outer space. Of course, the actual mission in this song is a bit more…carnal…

I actually got some of the original vocal stems from the 2014 demo, and most of the opening ad libs (including the lighter flick and coughing) are from that demo!

2. What’s Up (feat. J Knack)

This is one of three songs that were written as new material for North Star during the July 2018 recording sessions. My instrumental dates all the way back to November 2012, and aside from being mixed a little differently and chopped up in a couple spots, is largely unchanged from that version!

I see this whole album as telling an overarching story. It starts out with some friends ready to take on the world, they find love and experience heartbreak before finding their way home and pulling their trusted/close friends closer. J Knack’s verse is the only thing that breaks that chronological flow of this story arc, but that’s because he wrote his verse AFTER Jordan passed away. When Shane and I asked J Knack to feature on it, we didn’t give him any suggestions or requirements, we wanted him to just let it flow naturally no matter what.

3. Chill Here Tonight

Another recreation/re-recording of a Basement Tape demo. To me, this song feels like quintessential early Endangered Poets material: detailing their daily struggles, while also being sure to spend good time with friends. Also in this song, Shane mentions wanting to move to Colorado above any other destination, which he made happen in 2015!

4. Good Morning

In early 2019, we were looking at releasing this song as the 2nd single from North Star. Unfortunately, my computer died that March, and I didn’t get a new one up and running for 5-6 months. Then the pandemic hit, and I thought a song with more of a vibe of despair would be appropriate for fall 2020, so we went with Sold My Soul. Now that Jordan is no longer with us, his line about the urn really hits differently.

5. Valentine (released as a single on 2022-02-11)

My instrumental was started on September 1st, 2013, and was originally titled “Saving Angel” because I had very recently befriended a girl named Angie who helped me with navigating some newfound high school depression. On the night of February 13th, 2015, Jordan texted me saying that he and Shane were in the studio writing a Valentine’s Day song for their respective girlfriends, and he was wondering if I had a beat they could use. I was at a buddy’s house party out in the country that night, but I managed to upload the Saving Angel instrumental directly from my phone to Dropbox, despite the dogshit phone reception!

Jordan’s hook/chorus vocals in this final version are from February 2015. He was 24 then, which blows my mind…I was 17 then, and now I’m older than he was at that time. The verses in this final version were recorded in July 2018 during my surprise 3-week vacation to Colorado. My falsetto hook vocals were recorded early morning January 13th of 2022 at like 3am, cuz why wouldn’t I when I had work in the morning??

When I was editing the final version of song together in late 2021/early 2022, I found a vocal take of Jordan’s where he messed up while singing the hook. As we had lost him only a few months prior, I almost cried when I heard it. He was such a fun guy to be around, always making people laugh when they needed it. I thought it would be a nice little touch to put his silly lil screw-up in the outro. (At Jordan’s funeral, they actually played an early version of this song, which absolutely floored me.)

6. Any Higher

We started writing this song in early 2015 at Cool Cole’s apartment. I remember Jordan and I chilling out on the couch in the living room, he kept hitting his bong while I played an early demo of the instrumental off my phone.

The “wrong song” in the middle is a reference to our friend Wykeeta’s song “That Fire”, which we actually shot a music video for during the July 2018 North Star recording sessions! (Wykeeta is actually wrongfully incarcerated, you can learn more at freelannonb.com)

7. Sold My Soul (released as a single on 2020-10-23)

This one is another recreation/recording of a Basement Tape track. During the North Star recording sessions in July 2018, I was going through the worst heartbreak of my life, and I let my ensuing despair seep into this production. Working on this song in Shane’s apartment was very healing for me in a time where it felt like I was starting my whole life over. But in retrospect, I probably wouldn’t have spent 3 weeks in Colorado if said heartbreak had never happened, which means North Star wouldn’t exist.

8. Way Too Much (released as a single on 2018-12-14)

Yet another Basement Tape track we redid. We also shot a music video for this song on a cold December night in Denver the weekend before the song came out as a single! This is one of my favorite songs on North Star, and it was also the only song on the album to be played on the radio! (First Impressions with Chaz Kangas on the now-defunct Go 95.3 in Minneapolis.)

9. Purple Nurple

Honestly, this song is typically more likely to get me all teary-eyed than One More for Jordan, because I always visualize him somewhere up in northern Minnesota stranded on the side of a road less traveled with his flashers on. Just leaning against his car in the dark, looking up at the stars, taking it all in and not letting anything dampen his spirits. Even after death, that tends to be where I imagine him to be today, just vibing somewhere up north in the night.

This is pretty much the only CyFi song to include a melodic sample that I didn’t create myself. The Rhodes piano that is featured throughout the song is actually a sample from the original Basement Tapes demo. Jordan wasn’t sure where the original recording came from, so if anyone has any idea, I’d be more than happy to credit whoever wrote that little Rhodes melody!

10. One More for Jordan (feat. AyJay)

I’ve had this chord progression preserved in some form since literally 2010. But when Jordan passed away, and I began crafting an instrumental for the song I wanted us to dedicate to him, that chord progression was sticking in the front of my mind.

This is also the first (and likely only ever) song to feature me rapping. I thought it might be a little out of place if I was the only one not rapping on this song. The lighter flick during my verse is the same one from the beginning of The Mission.

AyJay is a friend of ours who has known Jordan since she was like 8 years old. She actually featured on one of the songs on the Poets’ “Cold Front” EP, and I knew we had to reach out to her to be a part of this one.

When North Star came out, we had a release party at Jordan’s parents’ house, during which we filmed a bunch of the attendees singing “One More for Jordan” to the camera for this music video.

The spoken sample at the end of the song is from a TikTok I made at Shane’s place the night of Jordan’s funeral. (We had been drinking, but I thought it would be really sweet to include in the song.)

Rest in peace, Jordan. We love you.

CyFi - Xylon Nova (NO CC)

Ever wondered how your house might look like in the future? Yea, me neither but here we are and I just did this. It was definitely a challenge, the shape itself was hard to work with and it looks like a spaceship. The colours are wild but on the inside it's more muted but still very modern. About: There are spoilers ahead for Unwind and UnWholly. After the attack on the airplane graveyard, Connor and Lev are on the run and headed back to Ohio in search of answers on the beginning of unwinding. Risa is adrift after publicly denouncing Proactive Citizenry, the organization determined to keep unwinding a lucrative business. Cam is determined to bring it down from the inside, convinced that its destruction will bring Risa back to him. All four of their paths will overlap, and while they may not all be friends, together they might be able to end unwinding forever. Trigger warnings: death/child death, some torture, child abuse, mental/emotional abuse, severe injury, abduction, racism, ableism, slurs, threats, grief, drug use.

Thoughts: This is kind of... more of the same. That's fine because I love the characters and the universe, so I'm happy to follow them around doing, you know, whatever, but I can see it being a problem for readers who enjoy a faster pace and more plot (which I suspect is a large demographic for the first novel). It's obvious this was never really intended to be a four-book series, and while UnSouled is tied into all the overarching plot and issues of the previous books, it lacks much of a plot of its own. Connor, Lev, and Risa are still chasing down answers on the history of unwinding, meanwhile facing the problems of being nationally recognized fugitives. The conflicts are realistic, but they're relatively small-scale compared to the first two books or the series as a whole.

Further, there's some pacing issues for roughly the first half of the book. The problem with breaking characters off into different directions is that Shusterman has to spend over half the novel bringing them back together. The United States is a big freaking country; it takes a long damn time to get from one side to the other if you have to stay off the radar and have next to zero resources. It's a little nonsensical to bring Connor and Lev together into an alliance that doesn't pan out. I suspect Lev's detour will be indispensable to the last book, but it's weird here. I'm also mad that Connor and Risa are denied the reunion we ALL deserved, and we were cheated out of them running into each other's arms.

All these random observations aside, I always enjoy digging deeper into this world and into these characters. If there’s a theme to this book in particular, it might be unintended consequences, as every single action (even the well-meaning, like lowering the legal unwinding age to seventeen) has them. Putting Cam in the middle forces every single character to adjust, and I was glad to see what my boy CyFi has been up to. (No mention of Miracolina though? I know what happened to her at the end of UnWholly, but she doesn't resurface here. Characters disappear sort of randomly from book to book.) I also really like Grace, who reads neurodivergent and is constantly underestimated for it, despite being hands down the best strategist of the team. The end revelation is pretty obvious from a distance, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. It's obvious because this world is so well-developed and so terrifyingly realistic that we can see where it's going because that's precisely what would happen in real life. My rating is more for the series as a whole than this particular book, but I stand by my opinion that they're some of the smartest, most relevant YA out there.

CyFi - Nostalgia

a collection of almost entirely instrumental music I’d put together over the years

you’ll notice that after the first 5 songs, they start saying “revamped demo from [year]”. I literally dug up the old FL Studio 10 and FL 11 files for these songs and worked (in FL 20) with what I already had rather than starting any of them from scratch. some were easier than others. Part of my motivation for releasing all these old instrumentals is that I just hate to let a good melody go to waste. I may reuse bits and pieces of some of these melodies in the future, but I wanted to preserve them in their original imagined forms.

I also see this as a bit of a reset for me musically. Some of these songs were started before I realized you’re supposed to route everything through the mixer. Until like 2013, I was just using the channel volume and the 3-band EQ on the master to mix and they sounded horrible! (In my defense, I never looked up any tutorials on YouTube in those days, I just fucked around on FL and made melodies. When I started college classes in 2014 for audio engineering, I realized how hilariously naive I was.)

Today, I approach the start of a new song quite differently than I did even as recently as 2-3 years ago. And the unfortunate downside to that is I don’t think some of these songs would’ve ever existed if I wasn’t so new/fresh to music production back then. It’s easier to break the rules of music when you don’t even know them yet. Every musician has that initial learning curve where their creativity is so incredibly limitless, and the more you learn about the rules of music, the more that can stop you from thinking outside the box.

One of my favorite things about music is its ability to evoke nostalgic feelings in the listener. And how different people can have different memories from the same song. Some of the first songs I ever knew were sung along with my dad listening to the radio in his pickup. Each song on this album brings me back to a different point in time. I see them as a soundtrack of sorts to those developing years of my life, and some of my closer friends from that era have probably heard early versions of some of these songs. There are probably some songs in here where I am their biggest fan, but even if I listen to them more than anyone else does, I’d much rather have them available and preserved so they can outlive me. So if anyone in the future somehow makes a connection with the music I have yet to create, they have a look inside my musical mind during its developing years.

1. October Nostalgia (released as a single on 2021-10-01)

October Nostalgia is an instrumental I came up with during my worst stretch of high school depression. I remember in March 2014, I woke up in the middle of the night with the main synth melody stuck in my head. I jumped out of bed to preserve it on my computer, then promptly went back to sleep and forgot about it for a while. Upon initial completion, I released an earlier version of this song under my birth name on October 14th, 2014. (I really like the number 14.)

October is my favorite month of the year. I grew up on a farm in Minnesota, and October means harvest time. A time spent collecting the metaphorical fruits of the past year’s labor. (And technically literal? Corn is a fruit, botanically speaking.) Growing up, there was nothing I loved more than riding in the combine harvester with my grandpa. (a John Deere 9610 combine from 1998 for any fellow farm kids out there!) I think I just really liked (and still do like) how fancy of a machine it is, with all its buttons and switches and unique sounds compared to other farm equipment. After moving away from the farm, I’ve made it a point to come home at least one weekend (but usually 3 or 4) every harvest to throw myself back into simpler times.

These days, October Nostalgia reminds me of those simpler times when I used to live just down the hill from my grandparents and could see their lights on at night. Now that my dear grandma is no longer with us, this song has taken on a whole new oddly comforting quality for me, almost like an instrumental lullaby.

2. Vermillion (released as a single on 2020-04-24)

Between a narrow, winding river and a vast expanse of cornfields is the small 400ish-person town of Vermillion, Minnesota. I grew up on a farm just a handful of miles away, but I consider Vermillion my hometown. I remember “going into town” with my dad for any number of farm-related needs at the local implement, or just grabbing a snack at the little gas station/convenience store at the center of town. (I also went to school for two and a half of my early years in Vermillion.)

Never having actually lived IN Vermillion, this little town has had an inexplicably strong nostalgic effect on me as an adult. In high school, I frequently drove through Vermillion just to exist within its city limits for a moment. There’s a big open park area on the south side of town with a blue water tower and some big satellite dishes, and this was a favorite spot of mine to stand and look at the western sky as the sun set. I struggle to find the words to convey just how magical it all is to me.

I know if I ever get famous under this name, I might be doxxing my decades-in-the-future self here, but I would LOVE to live in one of the houses right next to that water tower as a little escape home. It’s the perfect mix of FEELING suburban, (which in the right context has a futuristic vibe I love existing in,) while simultaneously being right next to a cornfield, a happy symbol of my childhood roots.

In 2014, I became part of the Pretty Lights fan community on Instagram, and many of us found each other using the #plpix hashtag he started for cool photos (and photo edits) with a specific vibe to them (that again, I struggle to find the words to describe.) One of the other PL fans I became internet friends with was a guy named John, who made music under the name Lickdisco. He had recently posted a song on Soundcloud called “Body N Soul”, and wouldn’t you know it, it was in my favorite key signature! I asked him if he would be interested in creating a song together, and we started sending an FL Studio file back and forth. (According to the project file, “Vermillion” was started on November 2nd, 2014.)

Under a different alias of mine, an earlier version of “Vermillion” was originally released on April 14th, 2015, less than two months before I graduated high school. My junior year (late 2013/early 2014) had been really rough on my mental health, and early 2015 was a time of healing for me, relatively speaking. I was taking college classes for audio engineering on top of my high school stuff, so I was much less depressed lol. (This was also the time of my life where I first met Jordan and Shane, the Endangered Poets.)

To me, this song is a melodic representation of the the warm nostalgia that takes you back to the good parts of your childhood. Never allow yourself to let go of that magic.

3. GalaxyKat (released as a single on 2018-02-27)

I started GalaxyKat in Summer 2014, released it on September 4th, 2015 under a different alias, (and then pulled it in ‘17,) redid the mix, actually mastered it, and then here it is again! This is my first (and pretty much only) time ever trying something that even remotely resembled future house. This song was heavily inspired by Mr FijiWiji and the house music he was making at the time, especially this song. The swing he was incorporating into the beat was something I really wanted to try :)

4. A Night in 2017 (released as a single on 2019-09-27)

I started this instrumental in September 2016, so I was looking slightly toward the future at the time. The original conception of this song was more of a house beat before I decided to take a stab at something more in the vein of future bass. I later realized that the melody is quite similar to part of the vocal melody of “Dreams and Disasters” by Owl City, but who’s really surprised that Owl City directly influenced a song of mine?

The title wound up being extremely relevant to me, as the majority of my 2017 was spent dating a girl who, at the time, I thought was “the one.” And this was her favorite song of mine that she’d gotten to hear, usually on late-night drives in and around Des Moines. No longer being with her today, this song is a fond reminder to me of those magical nights together in 2017.

5. Reflections

According to the FL Studio project file, I started this song on March 24th, 2012. I was barely getting started with FL Studio by that time, and Reflections will most likely be the earliest song I’ve ever created that will see the light of day. No lyrics for it existed until 2020, I was missing my 2017 ex-girlfriend and feeling a bit mopey about it. I was actually inspired by this Madeon song to have half of the song be instrumental, and the other half be vocals! (I also did verified lyric commentary on Genius.)

1. Through the Night (Revamped Demo from 2012)

I didn’t realize it at the time, but this song was very heavily inspired by “Good Time” by Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen. It’s the same chord progression, just bumped up a half-step. One of the clap samples in this song is actually FROM “Good Time,” as there were stems released for a remix competition. (I’ve used the Good Time claps in a couple other CyFi songs as well, such as “Degdeg.”)

2. An Evening in 2010 (Revamped Demo from 2013)

This song uses the same naming convention as A Night in 2017, but this one existed first. (Actually, An Afternoon in 2006 was the first song to use it, but that song evolved into “Today” with Jack The Underdog.) When I first started this song, I was actually legitimately looking back to an evening in 2010 (lol) when my family had just moved into a new house after I’d been stuck living with my mom’s batshit crazy religious extended family for over a year. (I discovered Owl City during that time, which was a much-needed escape.) No longer living under that regime, I felt more at ease and able to explore my own interests rather than being forced to follow someone else’s. I think the biggest musical inspiration behind this song was “Without You” by David Guetta and Usher, that chord progression in the drop is identical, just transposed up a half-step. (I really like the key of E-flat, it’s been my favorite for as long as I can remember.)

3. Here for You (Revamped Demo from 2013)

Man, I really liked that “Good Time” chord progression (IV-I-V-vi) back in my sophomore year of high school, huh? Also continuing my 2-song trend (with “An Evening in 2010″) of putting a dubstep-type section where the metaphorical third verse would be.

4. Fire Hazard (Revamped Demo from 2013)

This was my 16-year-old attempt at making a less-melodic, more EDM banger-type of song. Really leaned into that Harmor stock plugin in FL Studio. I was also very amused that one of the presets was named “Megatron puked on the cat.” (Although, believe it or not, the “wubs” that are on the upbeats throughout the entire song were created BY ME in Sytrus! I have no idea how I did it, I still have the presets saved today.)

5. Wait (Revamped Demo from 2013)

I started this one with the intent of having rap verses from a friend, with regular (albeit cringy) singing vocals leading up to the drop. A few years later, Jack (The Underdog) and I recorded a different version of this song with lyrics, almost releasing it back in 2018 or 2019. Thankfully we didn’t, as there was a line that went “we’re just like Kim and Kanye, we’re the perfect fit.” Soooooo I elected to release just the instrumental version as part of this album. I didn’t realize it right away, but the chord progression throughout the majority of this song was definitely inspired by the drop in “I Could Be the One” by Avicii and Nicky Romero.

6. Want You Back (Revamped Demo from 2013)

I’m pretty proud of my teenage self for this one, all the little synth parts intertwining, as well as that switchup in chord progressions between the “verses” and the “hook.” (I use quotations here because obviously, this is an instrumental.) The “verse” parts represent a feeling of visceral despair and yearning for a love you’d let slip through your fingers, while the “hook” parts represent tricking yourself into living in a fantasy world where you somehow managed to win them back and everything is okay. (I was NOT alright during this period of my life lol)

7. Skies Above (Revamped Demo from 2013)

Speaking of not being alright, this was originally intended to be a song for a christian EDM side project I wanted to start. Didn’t really have any lyrics written, but I can definitely appreciate the general uplifty vibes I was going for. Still experiencing hardship, but remembering that there is reason to keep going. This is also the second-longest CyFi song ever, only behind the final song on this album. I was also really getting into more of a house music phase around this time, thanks in part to Avicii’s influence.

8. Can’t Rewind (Revamped Demo from 2013)

I wanted so badly for this to be my debut single back in my teenage years, but I just wasn’t good enough (for my own standards) with vocals. (And tbh the lyrics were cringy, this was another mopey song written in the vein of wanting to reconcile with a lost love.) Musically, this song was very directly inspired by “Last Chance” by Kaskade and Project 46. Also, the original mix was almost 5 minutes long, but for this album, I trimmed it down into more of a “radio edit” if you will.

9. Chasing You Again (Revamped Demo from 2014)

Same vein as the last song, unrequited love and all that. I actually lost the original 2013 project file for this one, so it was rebuilt from scratch the following year as close to the existing bounces as I could get it. Despite it’s relative simplicity, this is one of my favorite instrumentals from that era of my life. It’s a less conventional chord progression with a less conventional melody that I could wind up recycling someday if I can make it work!

10. Angie (Revamped Demo from 2014)

I was dating a girl named Angie when I made this one, but she didn’t know it existed until this album was released in 2021. Musically, I later realized this song was pretty heavily inspired by “Shine Your Way” by Owl City and Yuna. I guess I liked how the chord progression kinda kept stepping down, and wanted to emulate that!

11. Happy Birthday (Revamped Demo from 2015)

I literally only made this to impress a girl I liked, but it has grown on me since then. It was fun trying to take a melody that was written in 3/4 time and execute it in 4/4 time! I also like the acid bass my 18-year-old self included in the drop.

12. Airliner (Revamped Demo from 2015)

I was in a long-distance relationship for 3 months of my junior year of high school. She lived in California, I lived in Minnesota, and we both met through the Owl City fandom on twitter. I don’t remember if I ever disclosed to her that I had the idea for this song, but basically it was going to be a dreamy Owl City-esque song about us wanting to fly across the country to see each other. This was also my first attempt at anything remotely resembling future bass, inspired in part by “Leaving You” by Savoy & Sound Remedy. These days, whenever I’m on a plane that’s about to take off, I often cue this song up and try to make the first drop hit right when the plane leaves the ground.

13. Degdeg (Revamped Demo from 2015)

Yes, this is literally a song named after the Lenny face. I suppose the biggest musical inspiration was either “Not Butter” by Dillon Francis or “Sleaze” by Knife Party, but honestly there’s a whole bunch of songs with the vibe I was going for. There’s also a couple of VERY 2015 samples in between the two drops that honestly the whole song was built around. It started as a joke, and now it’s one of my favorites in my entire discography.

14. Oh Suzanna (Revamped Demo from 2015)

I guess I wasn’t satisfied with EDM-ifying only ONE olden-times song with Happy Birthday, I needed a proper hoedown to pair with it! Actually, I believe this was put together as a joke to make one of my college professors laugh. He loved it. I wonder what Stephen Foster would think about this one. Or the fact that someone who isn’t 100% white did this! (There’s an incredibly racist verse in the original late-1840s lyrics.)

15. New Year, New Bass (Revamped Demo from 2016)

This song was produced almost entirely on January 1st, 2016, with a sound I’d never tried before, hence the title. (Although I also relied heavily on the bass pluck sound I’d developed in GalaxyKat.) The lead synth melody in between the drops is one I will most likely recycle in the future as well!

16. Should’ve Stayed (Revamped Demo from 2017)

Can you tell I was obsessed with the Chainsmokers in 2017? I even went so far as to try and replicate their “Roses” synth they showed us in this behind-the-scenes video.

17. October Nostalgia (Lofi Version)

I made a lofi song on a whim like 2 months before I submitted this album for distribution! October Nostalgia is one of my favorite melodies I’ve ever come up with, so I wanted to try it in a different flavor.

18. Through the Night (Dubstep Remix from 2013)

Basically a self-remix I made when I was starting to try and figure out how to make dubstep, produced mainly in the summer of 2013. I really liked being able to explore a darker side of the same song. Honestly, this one gives me more high school nostalgia than the original mix. I vividly remember listening to it at like 2 in the morning by myself when I was staying the night at my friend Caleb’s house, and that’s usually the imagery my mind conjures up when I listen to it today.
