The Idaho National Guard hosted a memorial ceremony in honor of CWO4 Jesse Anderson, CWO3 George Laubhan, and CWO3 Matthew Peltzer. The three pilots were killed on February 2, 2021 when their UH-60 Black Hawk crashed outside of Boise, Idaho.

The Five Books

A Craig asked me, “What are your favorite go-to books?” 

I would separate this question into two parts. I have a lot of favorite books; however, they might not be my go-to reads.

I have a lot of books that I consider to be part of my favorites collection. Anything I own in physical form is a favorite. Some of them I have read multiple times. My Kindle library is building up with things I read but are not necessarily something I want to keep on a shelf.

On one deployment to Iraq, I was extended for months. I also volunteered for something; so, I was there a long time. During the time I was there, I kept the same three books with me the entire deployment. I’m not sure why. I would reread them over and over again. Or, I would just stare at them. To this day, I have no idea why I chose those three. I still have them. I have not opened them up once since. The books are With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa, A River Runs Through It and Other Stories, and The Martian Chronicles. 

I have five go-to books. These books I keep out. I never put them away. All five are a part of my philosophy and help to define the Craig way. 

The Little Book of Stoicism by Jonas Salzgeber - If Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus get to be too much, this book breaks Stoicism down into easy to understand pieces. Stoicism can get boring at times droning on about death and the shortness of life. I don’t go very deep into those points. I love the stoic ideas of no whining, personal accountability, not worrying, doing what’s right, and basically the fact that you are responsible for yourself. No one owes you anything. Only the person in the mirror can direct your life.

Happy Money by Ken Honda - A simple little book written about money. You can read this book in less than two days. It’s good. The subject is money and you. Read it. 

Unbeatable Mind by Mark Divine - The title speaks for itself. The book was written by a Navy SEAL. I think the author’s nickname was Cyborg. This guy is an intellectual warrior and an entrepreneurial philosopher. I like people that can just will themselves to achieve.  

Discipline Equals Freedom: Field Manual by Jocko Willink - Just like the previously listed book, the title speaks for itself. The author is very well known. He’s a former Navy SEAL and a leader. 

The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined by Steven Pinker - This is a long book and not an easy read for me. I choose individual topics I like from within this book and I refer back to them constantly. Other topics, I don’t agree with at all. I am not the biggest fan of Psychology. So much of it is subjective and seems to revolve around making excuses. In the feelings versus facts argument, I don’t favor the feelings side. If you want an example of the failure of feelings, take a look at the Twitter Screech Mob (Cancel Culture and the Habitually Offended). To Pinker’s credit, he uses actual data. He uses a lot of data. This book was recommended to me by a Chief Warrant Officer in the Marine Corps. This particular CWO3 is a prototypical, hard charging, boozing, coffee drinking, no nonsense, tear you apart CWO. Apparently, he has an intellectual soft side too. He also threatened to beat me into a sandpit once. 

Go-To Honorable Mentions - Just about anything that is pro free will, self determination, the pursuit of happiness, the pursuit of economic freedom, and bringing others along for the ride makes my list.

25th ID has officially suspended the SAR operation for the 5 missing Blackhawk crew members, and moved their status to DUSTWUN. The five missing soldiers are 1LT Kathryn M. Bailey, 26, of Hope Mills, North Carolina; CWO3 Brian M. Woeber, 41, of Decatur, Alabama; CWO2 Stephen T. Cantrell, 32, of Wichita Falls, Texas; SSgt Abigail R. Milam, 33, of Jenkins, Kentucky; and SGT Michael L. Nelson, 30, of Antioch, Tennessee. They’re now moving to recovery and salvage. Just heartbreaking.
