Jaw Surgery: Six Weeks Post-Op

I’m one day off, but it has been mad, here, and there has been lots going on. But, I am thrilled to say I made the six week mark.

My surgeon said that as soon as the world opened up to normal food, the jaw starts to open more. He was right!

We are out of town, so I don’t have my own kitchen and ingredients at my disposal, but our friends recommended an Indian joint down the street.

Biting into a samosa was intimidating, but I did it. I know I looked to Matt with so much pride on my face! I did it!

The whole meal was so delicious—made all the moreso by the fact I was allowed to eat it!

Earlier today, my nose itched and I absentmindedly rubbed my knuckles against my nose as I’ve done most of my life to soothe it. And it worked.

It struck me that not only was my nose itchy, but that I could feel it and do something about it. Another step forward.

I am still dealing with some swelling and frozen face. I know good sleep would help, but last night was a rubbish night and I am unsure why because the night before wasn’t bad.

The good part about last night was four tonsil stones that I’ve been struggling with since surgery coming loose.

The pain from those things is pretty rough, and last night was the first night I could manipulate my tonsils and tongue enough to do anything about them since surgery. Huzzah!

I still can’t open my mouth fully, but it is much improved. I am still swollen and frozen, but that is also much improved.

This whole healing journey is a beast, but if I could go back in time, I would choose the surgery again in a heartbeat. Absolutely.

Since Jeremy's job includes consuming ALL vampire media, which does he hate least? Does he have a guilty pleasure among them?

How does he feel about Sam von Bloodborne? Has Tom ever gifted him an official licensed High Stakes coffee mug? (I have known Tom all of thirty minutes but he seems like the kind of guy who might have a great appreciation for his own merch)

Jeremy doesn't understand the meaning of the term guilty pleasure. He does, he just wouldn't admit his love of gothic vampire movies in the 90s when he was a teenager. But, if you were going to force him, it's probably Blade.

As for Tom, your instinct is impeccable. Jeremy has been given many a themed mug over the years from the High Stakes films, plus other many such signed items, all of which currently sit at the back of his kitchen cupboard, gathering dust. The last mug he received displayed one of Tom’s proudest photoshoots for the third film - top surgery scars and all.

Jeremy is secretly very proud of everything he's received from Tom. He's just not about to amble around the Foundation building with "Stakes High, Vamps Low!" branded on his morning sulk-coffee.

Got home about an hr-ish ago (I think...) I haven't eaten since 9pm last night, so I'm testing my fortitude with some crackers and water.

I discovered:

1. Anesthesia makes me INCREDIBLY dizzy and nauseous (thank the gods for zofran).

2. Valium gives me the fucking giggles, and I say dumb shit. Honestly, it was a fun time 😆

3. The lead up to the main event is almost as bad as the nausea and dizziness from the anesthesia.

The last thing I remember is randomly declaring that "Gale Dekarios is my favorite fictional character," before I went nighty night 😂 (literally, I don't remember closing my eyes. It's weird.)

One of my nurses, Patti, sent me home with a shit ton of snacks. She was such a fantastic lady (everyone was tbh,) but Patti was amazing. She put up with my difficult veins, and never once hurt me.

Anyway, I'm tired asf. Just wanted to give a lucid update while I was snacking lol. I want to also thank everyone for putting up with my anxiety posts about this thing. Y'all have been so loving and supportive, and I truly can't thank you enough.

Since you unfortunately had to miss out on mine and my BFFs dark humor, and my medically-induced, unfiltered silly goosery, have these pictures instead. I'm tired asf, but I got snacks for days 🙌

I've been in hospital for emergency surgery the past few days (goodbye gallbladder!!) so I'm sorry for not seeing sooner - but thank you all so, so much!!

Though I primarily post for my own enjoyment, it's an amazing feeling when others like what I produce!! I hope to keep making enjoyable content for you all, thank you so much 🥹💖

While I'm in absolute celebration of people who're proud of and happy with what they've got ... ...Chasers are something else. The way they wind all these little, stabbing needles of negativity amidst what at first feels like compliments ... Make you feel so uncertain of yourself. Make you feel as if you need to fit the standard they're looking for, and not simply strive to be yourself ... Fucks me up every single time. I wish I could ever see it coming.

Everyone go give my partner @fiotrethewey all the love and well wishes today, as we’re sitting waiting for his top surgery time slot. It’s been a long time coming, and I couldn’t be prouder of or more in love with him.

Waking up from surgery is always wild like you are drugged to the nines and then because you aren't wearing your glasses random dark blurs come up and insist of talking to you and asking "how you are feeling" and the only words that come out are raspy breaths and they say "that's good then"

My doctor came by and all I remember is a literal blur and his talking but not what he said. At one point the lady in the room next to me walked by and kept gesturing at me but I have no idea what she was saying. I got to listen to the entire history and results of the hysterectomy next door while desperately waiting for the nurse to come help me to the bathroom.

Thank you for my excellent and very kind surgeon, the angel nurses and techs, the anesthesiologist for keeping me unconscious and bringing me back. Thank you for pain control and doctors that give you what you need to be comfortable.

I'd had surgery before and it's never fun, but just happy for uncomplicated recovery and good medical care.

(Just trying to avoid thinking about the cost don't want to go there until I'm actually healed XD)

Jaw Surgery: Seven Weeks Post Op

Honest moment: While I have come a long way since the beginning of this journey, I had hoped I would be further along by now.

I cognitively understand my lack of sleep is a factor. Even at the AirBNB where we are staying in Glasgow to attend WorldCon I am struggling badly with sleep.

I always feel better after a good-ish night of sleep. But those have been very few.

I am biting into things as well as I can, but the tooth I almost lost when my Maryland Bridge was cut out is tender in a way it wasn't before. I know the gum graft consult is soon after we return to the United States, and it can't come soon enough.

The wires from my surgery still cut into my mouth, and I have to be careful to keep the plastic splint clean because it easily gathers food and whatnot.

August 22nd, I have my appointment to get the palate taken out and the messed up wires removed. But, I can't start celebrating too soon because I see my orthodontist that day for a new wire and to start my rubber bands for aligning my teeth post-op.

Now, she could have started me on those rubber bands before we left the country. But, she took pity on me when I asked to postpone it since I was still stuck with the plastic splint. I am so grateful for her mercy.

Here at the Con, my whole family is masked. That was always part of our plan. But I have found it has the unexpected side effect of helping me feel less self-conscious about my face.

When I smile, I have to smile super wide to get past all the wires that poke and cut into me. So, I look like I'm losing my mind. I can't quite control my lips and cheeks and face normally, and I know I am still a little hard to understand because I am working with 2/3 of my upper palate, still.

I know I am improving daily. Cognitively, I understand that. But, I wish this hadn't been presented as a 6-week recovery. Because I feel like I'm in Week 7 of 12 at least. And that bit is a little discouraging.

Ah, well. Can't wallow, can I?! Onward.

Absolutely disappointed! I just (okay, I think two hours ago now) woke up from surgery and there is no fuzzy adorable reindeer telling me what's going to happen next!
