this is your periodic reminder that for all the artifacts and errors and "tells" one could possibly list, the only reliable way to actually determine if an image is ai generated is to investigate the source. it is becoming increasingly common for "fake classical paintings" to circulate around curative aesthetic blogs, and everyone should be using this as an opportunity to not only exercise their investigative skills but also appreciate art more in general. you're all checking out the artists you reblog, right? 🫣

so what are some signs to look for? let's use this very good example.

what a lovely late-impressionist piece blended with evocative leyendecker-esque themes! why haven't you ever heard of this artist before? surely tumblr would be all over an artist like this. who is justin brown?

your two options from here are to do a search for the name, or a reverse image search. i prefer reverse image searching, particularly when it comes to a common name like "justin brown". so what does that net?

Immediately, without looking at any text, something is wrong: it barely exists. an actual historical piece would turn up numerous results from websites individually discussing the piece, but no such discussions are taking place. Looking at the text, though, does show the source-- and at least in this case, the creator was honest about their medium.

But let's also look at the "exact matches", in case a source doesn't make itself apparent in the initial sidebar results like this.

This section will often tell you post dates of images, and here it can be seen that the very first iteration of the image was posted 15 days ago. It did not exist online prior to that.

Seeing how long an unsourced image has been floating around is a skill applicable to more than just generative images! See a cool image of an artifact or other intriguing item with a vivid caption? Reverse search it! If all the results are paired with that caption and only go back a few months, you might just have viral facebook spam.

Sometimes generative creators are dishonest about their medium and do not tag it like in the example, so that's when establishing "jpeg provenance" becomes important. While it can be a little trickier to determine if someone is using generative images and not admitting to it if they aren't trying to pass it off as a classic, something to consider is the age of their account and the frequency with which they post. Here are some account red flags:

-Did they only start posting art after 2022, or if they did before, did their style/skill level WILDLY change? Not gradual improvement-- I'm talking amateur graphite portraits straight into complex digital renders. Everyone starts somewhere, newness is not a red flag alone; it's newness combined with existing in a vacuum away from any community.

-Do they post fully-finished paintings several times a week? -Do many of these paintings seem iterative of a similar theme or subject matter ("three well-dressed young men face each other under shade and dappled sunlight")?

-Does their style change in inconsistent ways? An artist that can swap between painting like Drew Struzan and Hokusai should be pretty well known, right? Why is no one hyping this guy?!

-Do they have social media besides the source instagram? If so, what are they posting about? Are there any WIPs? Doodles? Interactions with other artists? Gallery dates? 3am self-doubt posts? Or is it all self-promo? Crypto? Seemingly nothing art-related at all for someone pushing out 3 weekly paintings?

Basically, if it's important to you to omit this stuff when you curate, please don't just smash reblog if the source doesn't seem to be the OP themselves. Seeking out sources was important even before this became an issue, now it is more than ever.

- Trein will be switching classrooms for the day when he hears the slightest of commotions ahead in the hall. Naturally, he is going to see just what is going on and assign extra work as needed for whoever was making such a commotion.

- What he didn't expect to see was you dressed in clothes that looked near identical to his own with your hair slicked back in a style much like his own. Even Lucius had to glance between the two of you a few times.

- Just seeing his favorite student dressed the same way he did gave him an intensely nostalgic feeling that harkened back to when he was raising his daughters. He was going to have to keep pestering Crowley to allow him to adopt you already.

- Divus was taking a few of his dalmatians for a walk when he noticed a gathering of students around a central point. Naturally, he had little interest in figuring out what the common cur got up to in their freetime, but they were his cur and he was expected to keep them in line. Where the dogs gather, fights are not far behind.

- It took him by complete surprise to see you in the center of the commotion, wearing a coat much like his own and even sporting copies of his dual-colored hair and red riding crop. Vil- who no doubt put this ensamble together- was standing nearby lecturing what seemed to be a group of first-years about the proper care that goes into tailoring good clothes. You were less than amused and he gathered that you had been put up to copying him by the other first-years.

- He can't help but think that the style suits you much more than your usual uniform and he finds himself wondering what other clothes of his would fit your aesthetic. Certainly he could train his dalmatians to obey your orders as well. It would also help him keep the usual mutts away from you if you looked and behaved more like he did. He would have to bribe talk with Crowley about your future in Twisted Wonderland.

- Vargas was running laps around the school when he heard a familiar whistle. Feeling compelled to see who was doing what, he was surprised to find several first-years doing pushups at your behest.

- He didn't realize at first that you were wearing what looked like his typical outfit he had on during classes. The red windbreaker paired with fitted black sweats that all had golden trim actually looked rather nice on you as if you fit them just as well as he did. You were so focused on the first-years in front of you, that you didn't notice Coach Vargas watching in surprise.

- "And when you're done, you guys are gonna run ten laps!" The coach felt himself smiling at your authoritative tone as you truly began to embody his behavior. He had been looking for an assistant coach and you certainly didn't need magic to be athletic. Perhaps, if he could adopt you from Crowley, he could convince the Headmage to make an assistant role for you.

- Sam is taking a quick break from the store when he hears a familiar greeting, "Hey there, little imps!" And of course, he needs to see who is using his good material and why. A group of first-years are laughing as he slowly approaches the group, wondering what all the fuss is about.

- You- his favorite best customer- are standing in the middle of the group of first-years, top-hat perched on your head and purple suit fitted to your figure. The tailcoat and fine details of the suit lend themselves to the overall look which was so inherently Sam that he almost believed you could be his kid. You know, if you hadn't randomly been pulled to Twisted Wonderland by the dark mirror and had no obvious relation to him, that is.

- He's not one to stop students from having a good time and you were certainly rocking the unique style well enough that he couldn't be mad about it. Perhaps he would have to give you a job around the store or some special discount seeing as you may as well be his apprentice given how often you were in his humble shop. Crowley couldn't be mad that Sam was looking out for his best customer, right?

- The Deadbeat Headmage had been doing his usual aimless wandering rounds when he heard the sound of someone being scolded by professor Mozus Trein. Naturally, as the nice guy he was, he was going to snoop see who was in trouble and why.

- He certainly didn't expect to see someone adorned in a mask much like his own under the scrutiny of the history professor. It took him a moment to realize it was you and he was frankly impressed with the accuracy of your imitation. You wore his long coat on your shoulders, the black feathers sticking out from around the collar and shoulders. You did not wear the golden talons like he did, but your black gloves and top-hat were close enough to show you were trying to copy his appearance. It was a good imitation and had just enough sparkle to the vest that it was almost completely accurate.

- "-and to think you are going around school dressed as the Headmage! Why, he would be quite cross with you if he were here!" Without missing a beat, Crowley was quick to interrupt the conversation, picking up one of your hands and using his magic to give you your own set of the golden talons he wore so often. "If you're going to be my ward and dress like me, you may as well be as accurate as possibly, my Little Chick. And look, because I'm such a kind person, I gave you your own talons! Now we can match, like true family."

Nobody asked and nobody cares but here’s me associating Madoka Magica characters with Sonic characters

As the title says, I realized I don’t have to bother my friends with my musings when I could just ramble on tumblr :D !! I mean someone on this hellsite is bound to have the same interests as me. Anyways without further ado,

Madoka Kaname - Amy Rose

“Oh you just picked them cause they’re both pink!!” Maybe but also listen; think about Amy’s speech to Shadow in SA2

She says something along the lines of “people are basically good and as long as they keep believing in their wishes, they’ll always be happy!” (paraphrasing I can’t be bothered to find the script rn) Now compare that to Madoka’s wish to stop all despair and to “not lose hope and remember someone out there is always fighting for you!” (again paraphrasing). My point is that they both believe in the goodness of people/people deserve a chance and that they have love to spare.

The one digression I have with this comparison is that Amy said “if I had to choose between the world and Sonic I’d choose Sonic” which doesn’t feel like something Madoka would align herself with (but I do think she’d respect Amy’s choice) rather she’d choose EVERYONE none of this “person or the world” bs, instead this feels very in character for Homura but overall I think there are more similarities between Madoka and Amy + I think they would be friends <3

Homura Akemi - Agent Stone

Y’all are just going to have to hear me out with this one

Honestly it was easier to figure out who she wasn’t so I’ll start with that

Shadow - I know people would want me to put her with Shadow because of similar aesthetics and angst etc. BUT ☝️ there is one major digression between them that I fear cannot be overlooked for the sake of aesthetics and that’s that Shadow actually respects Maria’s wishes.

Consider these two scenes and how these images appear similar but ended VERY differently.

Shadow, quite literally, let’s go of Maria after he says “I will continue to fight with your wish in my heart, your wish for everyone to have a chance to be happy” He’s healing from his grief and moving forward with light and peace and hope

Homura on the other hand, does almost the exact opposite. She can tell that Madoka isn’t happy and goes against her wishes, quite literally rips apart space time, so her gf doesn’t have to deal with the burden of being God, even if that is what she wishes for.

So while yes, both Homura and Shadow are driven by their love and grief for another character Homura cares more about being with Madoka than moving on and living with her wish

Silver - this was the other character I considered for her but tbh Silver actually cares about the timeline, he’s not ripping apart the universe for one person 💀

So this brings us to my actual choice; whose character is defined by their association and loyalty to another? Whose character cares deeply about protecting and serving the other, and basically no one else? Whose character only exist as a response to another? My goat, AGENT STONE 🗣️🗣️🗣️

My main point is that yes, Stone would tear apart the universe to be with Robotnik if he knew he could (manifesting crashout Stone in Sonic 4🤞). Stone waited for months because he believed in Robotnik and when he failed he didn’t just leave him there, he scooped him up and nursed him back to health and built a hiding space for them, like WHAT . Homura went through countless loops trying to protect and save Madoka and Stone would do so too.

TL;DR Stone would do the same as Homura in the same circumstances and no other character would + I just think Stone would like her lmao, all in comment sections talking about “she did nothing wrong!!!”

Sayaka Miki - Shadow

Yeah this only makes sense to me,,

LISTEN!!! Listen,,, they’re both driven by love for another character.

The most important person to them was an ailing loved one and was the reason they were created: Shadow being made by Gerald to find a cure/be the cure for Maria’s illness and Sayaka, the magical girl, being “created” after she made the wish so Kyosuke can play violin again. I feel like this is where the very specific similarities end but there’s still some more to be compared.

For example they both fight because of their association with said loved one. I’ve already talked enough about how Shadow fights with Maria’s love and wish in his heart so about Sayaka

Sayaka was willing to, essentially risk it all just so Kyosuke could pursue his passion again and she could be there to witness it, she sees herself as the hero in this situation (evident by her white cape and how she kinda expected to be thanked/rewarded for her decision which imo was kinda valid but that’s another topic). Also small note about the hero thing is that Shadow after he realized Maria’s wish almost INSTANTLY switched sides, and despite some healthy rivalry has never been against siding with the heroes, and Sayaka was more than willing to become a magical girl even after seeing the risks, so yeah hero things

The last of my compassion ends with Sayaka’s ending and how she basically said “I guess I just wanted to hear him play for one last time” and how she was finally content (sort of) in her wish and how things played out. This is kinda similar to Shadow moving on from Maria in Shadow Generations and I guess my point is they’d both rather see their loved ones just, being, for one last time before deciding to let go and be the hero again !!

Kyoko Sakura - Knuckles

“They’re just both red and angry !!” Yeah that’s it ngl 💔💔

Jokes aside I do feel there are some general personality traits they share, having to do with their families

Kyoko makes a wish so people will believe her father and her own family can be better off while Knuckles has inherited the burden of protecting the Master Emerald. They both feel a sense of responsibility to their families and their role in them, which both end kind of tragically (going more off of Movie Knuckles here)

Aside from that they both prefer to do their own things and kinda be alone. I mean Knuckles does team up quite often but in his downtime he’d rather be pacing around the Master Emerald (going more off game Knuckles here) and obviously Kyoko is only doing things for herself by herself but in the end teams up and even grows close to her rivals (like the in the Rebellion movie)

Plus they’re both stubborn and a bit hot headed but ultimately will do the right thing (sorry this one is shorter I had to retype it cause Tumblr didn’t save it the first time </3)

Mami Tomoe - Maria Robotnik

Listen, there’s not a ton to go off for either of them so I’m working with what I have. Basically nicest sweetest blonde ally of main character (ish) dies as an inciting incident and that’s nearly it.

I do think frequently about Kyubey appearing very conveniently when Mami got into the car accident and it makes me wonder if Maria would’ve done the same. I mean we know she wanted to live on Earth and experience it as a whole so I don’t think it’s that much of a stretch to say she’d make a wish to live too? And Mami also mentioned about being lonely and I wonder if Maria felt similarly. Obviously she had Shadow and Gerald but she didn’t have any other super deep connections with others on the Ark.

So aside from dying and loneliness as shared traits, I think it also has to do with how they value human life, Maria wishing to save Earth and Mami fighting as a magical girl.

Don't mind me, just getting incredibly mad about Timnit Gebru's "TESCREAL" talk again.

You know, I will agree with her, there is a real problem with the upper class capitalist elite using ideas like Effective Altruism and Longtermism to make warped judgements that justify the centralization of power. There is a problem of overvaluing concerns like AI existential risk over the non-hypothetical problems that require more resources in the world today. There is a problem with medical paradigms that fetishize intelligence and physical ability in a way that echoes 20th century eugenicist rhetoric.

But what Gebru's talk/paper, which have sickeningly become a go-to leftist touchpoint for discussing tech, slanderously conflates whole philosophical movements into a "eugenics conspiracy" that is so myopically flattening that you have her arguing that things like the concept of "being rational" are modern eugenics. Forget transhumanism as radical self-determinism and self-modification, increasing human happiness by overcoming our biology, TESCREALs just want to make themselves superior (modern curative medical science is excluded from this logic, being tangible instead of speculative and thus too obviously good). Forget the fight to reduce scarcity, TESCREALs true agenda is to exploit minorities to enrich corporations! Forget trying to do good in the world, didn't you hear that Sam Bankman-Fried called himself an EA and yet was a bad guy? And safety in AI research? Nonsense, this is just part of the TESCREAL mythology of the AI godhead!

Gebru takes real problems in a bunch of fields and the culture surrounding them - problems that people are trying to address, including nominally her! - and declares a conspiracy where these problems are the flattened essence of these movements, essentially giving up on trying to improve matters. It's an argument supported by loose aesthetic associations and anecdotal cherrypicking, by taking tech CEOs at their word because they have the largest platform instead of contemplating that perhaps they have uniquely distorted understandings of the concepts they invoke, and a sneering condescension at anyone who placed in the "tech bro" box through aesthetic similarity.

ALCHEMIST. Cover story when he travels from city to city. Usually conducts trade with curative potions and antidotes. GLEANER. Mostly known amongst guilds of arcane arts. Mainly hired to hunt and retrieve dangerous magical artifacts of eons past. Also works as normal treasure hunter (at times, a dungeon raider), possessing a collection of rare items of his own. ASSASSIN. Only known in the Eorzean underworld. Goes by the cover identity “Yiune Rei,” a Hingan courtesan deeply shrouded in mystery, prized for her beauty and talent in Astromancy. Uses honey traps to kill her targets in cold blood.

SKILLS & ABILITIES.

JACK OF ALL TRADES. The perks of being immortal grants Yiuno unlimited time to acquire an arsenal of skills and abilities, which would usually be difficult or even impossible for beings with a normal lifespan. However, regardless of the numerous know-how he has under his belt, he never considers himself a master of any. He has no interest in becoming an expert in a specific field or area, anyway. MAGICAL APTITUDE. Both Yiuno and his twin sister, Yiuna, are naturally gifted in aether manipulation—so much so that even the likes of his former mentor, Shatotto, and later on his partner, Y’shtola, are able to discern in one glance. RECONNAISSANCE. “Knowledge is power,” is a quote often used by scholars, usually associated with books. However, to Yiuno, the same can be applied to field work, especially the kind of jobs he’d take on. Terrain of the site he’d be scavenging as a gleaner. Profile of the target he’d be killing as an assassin. Always preparing himself for the worst.

MOST POSITIVE. Resourcefulness. Yiuno has lived for a long, long time, which gives him a wealth of knowledge and experience well beyond any beings with an ordinary lifespan. It has helped him to live in the shadows for millennia, enabling him to constantly adapt to the ever-changing world he’s forced to live in—for eternity. MOST NEGATIVE. Cynicism. Yiuno harbors a strong mistrust towards people in general—after all, he has lived through many calamities and countless wars in his immortal life, which have shaped him into a bitter, pessimistic man. He’s driven by personal interests, and he believes that others are no different from him, since he sees it as a basic survival instinct that every living being is born with.

Drinks that contain high amount of caffeine with low to no sugar content at all. Long black and herbal tea are his go-to.

FAMILY.

Born into an ancient clan built upon strict matriarchy and meritocracy, Yiuno’s understanding of a family greatly differs from common Eorzeans. Shortly after their birth, kits (young Viera children) were placed under custody care in a specialized facility within the civilization; raised collectively by adult Viera designated to be their caretakers, none of the members knew who their birth parents were. They didn’t care, either—the concept of blood relation never once crossed their mind, for they were taught since young that everyone in the clan is family. The only exception to this is Yiuna, his twin sister. Their birth was met with scrutiny, for no twins were born in the clan for centuries until they came. They share a special bond that they can’t explain, but they know and they can feel it between them. They were banished from the clan due to Yiuna’s deceit—she disguised her brother’s true gender and made him to pretend to be a female so that the wood wardens wouldn’t take him away from her when they hit puberty. After the Seventh Umbral Calamity, Yiuno woke up in the middle of the Black Shroud with an amnesiac Xaela, Sora Amariyo; Yiuna was nowhere to be found. He became a mentor and guardian both to the young Warrior of Darkness, and they began their journey through the realm. As of DT, Yiuno is still searching for Yiuna, trying to reunite with his missing twin sister.

PETS.

Yiuno owns a collection of minions—automated mechanical dolls that he uses as either unsuspecting scouts or diversion puppets in his line of work. He can also summon familiars, in the form of black-feathered owls, to do his bidding.

SMOKES? Never. He despises the smell. ALCOHOL? Drinks socially to maintain some cover stories; this is especially so when he assumes the identity of the mysterious courtesan, Yiune. While he’s unable to get drunk due to his unique body condition, he does enjoy a wine or two on special occasions. DRUGS? Similar to alcohol, drugs have no effects on him due to his special circumstances. However, he has no qualms to use them on others. MOUNT? Yiuno rescued a chocobo sometime during the ARR timeline—the chocobo was apparently abandoned by its original owner because it was an albino. To avoid any issues with the law enforcement, Yiuno registered this chocobo as his mount with the Grand Companies, naming it “Sören”. CRIMINAL RECORDS? Too many to count, given his immorality; some were major historical incidents, such as the War of the Magi. Though Shatotto erased his name from history and bore the weight of his crimes onto herself, Yiuno would never forget the sins he’d committed, even till this day.

FOREIGNER cried out, after CONDUCTOR slammed past her, knocking her into the wall as the claws of the armor scratched into her side, only ripping out as he continued to make his way forward. She dropped to one knee, as RULER rushed over to her, casting what seemed to be a series of support spells. There wasn't much time to focus on exactly what, as CONDUCTOR used the chance to keep moving.

"Oop, they called you stupid anyways. What'd I tell you?"

...You might have started overstepping the bounds of their patience.

In a way, it made sense. If you were experienced enough to make it to this point, then you would have most likely had a way to halt the virus. Used a Command Spell to physically restrain Avenger so that the others could handle it, attempted to use a curative code cast... it was difficult for the Blue Servants to look at this situation in comparison with their own Masters and assume that you weren't at least somewhat complicit.

In other words, they were doing the exact opposite of underestimating your competence, and (unfortunately?) holding you to a proper standard.

"Well, onward and upward! We're almost out of the main base, and this should keep any Attack Programs from converging on us!"

CONDUCTOR chuckled as he kept pushing forward. As he did so, your own hack triggered, a wave of feedback shooting their way through the communications of the Blue Faction. From behind, you could hear the sound of both RULER, MOONCANCER, and FOREIGNER shout and grimace in pain as the feedback static rippled through their heads and left their communications blind.

That, in addition to the failed hack on FOREIGNER, most likely meant that they were actively regarding the virus as a threat against themselves- just as much as it was a threat against AVENGER. Meaning that if they weren't tense and alarmed before, they almost certainly were now.

CONDUCTOR found himself bathed in daylight as he burst outside, before he was met with a massive shadow.

ALTER-EGO, wide eyed and still a bit confused, stood as a massive monolith between leaving the Blue Faction's base, and capture. CONDUCTOR stopped for a moment, gripping the baton as a familiar voice shot in from behind.

"Hold 'em, Alter-Ego! I've got somethin' that'll keep even a virus starin' slack-eyed!"

FOREIGNER yelled, as paint began gathering at the edge of her brush, swirling outward. Shapes, not of this world, began to manifest in a spiral of light and color, the manifestation of aesthetics further than human comprehension or ambition- a mere fraction of the Outer God's power aimed as a sniper shot towards CONDUCTOR. Presumably in an attempt to addle him before he had a chance to make it any further.

It would also probably hurt.

As FOREIGNER readied her move, ALTER-EGO attacked in tandem, swinging her arm in an attempt to grab up CONDUCTOR and hold him still.

"Nowhere to go but forward, Masters of Avenger! What are we doing?!"

It seems like you've lost the ability to stop! …Though it wasn't like you were really using it anyways, right?
