Familiar Voices
Act 1:
As much as Reiko enjoyed creating her podcast, there was a unique satisfaction that came with finishing the final edits on a new episode. She leaned back on her favourite chair, which was as worn out as she was feeling that night. The only sound that can be heard in the small room she called her studio, was the soft hum of her podcast’s intro music. She rubbed her tired eyes, feeling the kind of exhaustion only a podcaster knows - she looked forward to the satisfaction that came from hours of research, editing, and piecing together an episode.
She always felt that she has not accomplish much in her life. Her one winning achievement? Her podcast, Unsolved Voices, had slowly been growing in popularity the past year. It was a passion project born out of her obsession of wanting to understand why people do the things they do. She spent enough time listening to the likes of Bailey Sarian and Stephanie Soo that she felt confident enough to throw her voice in. Each episode took weeks of research and interviews, but it was worth it every time she hit “publish”. Tonight was no different. She just finished editing her latest episode, one that investigated a long-forgotten robbery from the early 90s, a case that was never solved.
A quick look at her clock told her that it was time to step away from her desk. She finished work past midnight, again. She took her headphones off and unplugged them, getting ready to call it a day (or night). She felt her phone buzz as she dropped it into her pocket. It was a message from her podcast producer, Hana.
“That was awesome! Your engagement is the highest it has ever been. There’s even one weird feedback you may want to check out. Check your email!”
Curious, she sat back down and saw the first unread email with a subject that simply said “Listen to this.”
Reiko hesitated. It was normal to get fan mail or tips after a new episode went up. But his one was odd. Aside from the strange subject, the sender was tagged as “Unknown”.
The curiosity itched at her until she finally opened the email. There was no message, just a single attachment. She cautiously clicked the .mp3 file.
The whole room vibrated with a sudden noise from her speakers. The voice was muffled, as if the person speaking was whispering or had something blocking the mic. It was just clear enough to understand, if you really concentrated. She could make out a man’s voice, rough and older than her usual listener.
“This…I can’t keep this to myself any longer. Someone needs to know… I, I was there. I was there the night of the Koego Robbery… and that… I was there when he died, too. This secret’s been eating at me for too long.”
Reiko froze. The Koego Robbery was the case she covered on a previous episode, an incident that happened almost four decades ago. The case has been unsolved all this time. There just wasn’t enough evidence for the police to investigate further, so it remained a cold case all these years.
Her hands were shaking as she hit pause on the recording. She was used to receiving fan theories after her episodes went up. She was not expecting a confession. And the voice. The voice was faint, as if coming from beyond the grave. Reiko felt a chill down her spine.
She hit replay, her heart beating so loud she could hear it in her ears. The voice continued:
“The others…they don’t know. I have kept silent for too long, and the guilt is tearing me apart. I need to make things right before it’s too late.”
Click. Clack. Her fingers tapped at her keyboard as she took notes of the recording. Could this be real? She researched and dissected this case for weeks before she recorded. Could this be the missing link?
But then another thought struck her. She recognised something in that voice. It was very faint, like someone tried very hard to disguise it. Yet, there was a familiarity to it - something in the tone, the cadence. It was very subtle. Reiko hit replay again, leaning forward, narrowing her eyes at the screen. Her mind raced through memories of her childhood, of the strong, stern man she had grown up with. Could it be? No, that’s impossible.
She quickly picked up her phone, speed dialled 5 - that was Hana’s number. The ringing could be heard echoing throughout the small room.
“Hana, you will not believe what came through,” Reiko said, her voice coloured in excitement and disbelief. “I just received an anonymous tip…a confession…about the Koego Robbery. And… I think I know who it is!”
Hana’s shocked voice came through, her own disbelief clear. “Wait, what? Who do you think it is?”
Reiko paused, staring at her screen with the recording on pause. The voice sounded so…too familiar. It can’t…it can’t be, right?
But Reiko had learned long ago that in her line of work, sometimes truth was stranger than fiction. And the truth she was about to unfold might destroy everything she thought she knew.
“I think it’s my dad,” she whispered.
(Draft of Act One). Feedback is welcome.

New Book
I've been working on Diamond Immortal a novel of the Fairy Mafia series. I have at least one other plan, possibly two and then the series will come to an end. However, Jorja will make a few appearances in Assassin's Core.
Here's an excerpt.
“After getting to know the women just a little bit, I think I can pull this off,” the tall golden skinned man said to the two others in the room. One was a male with dark skin and the other a female with olive skin.
“The trick to getting to her now lies in getting close to her family,” the woman said. “Not just her wife and children. Her human family. I don’t think she’s as detached from them as she’d like everyone to believe.”
“What if she is?” the dark-skinned male asked with a frown. “I’m not about hurting anyone who’s not apart of this.”
“We don’t need to hurt them,” the woman said. “We just need to infiltrate. Through them, we will have a path to her. She doesn’t need to do anything except what we want her to.”
“Which is?” the darker-skinned male asked.

Revenge, Sisterhood, and Punk Rock 🎸

Another 💎 I found on my Libby app, and this time, coupled with the audiobook, it hit just right. I could see every scene playing out in my head like I was already watching it on screen. The plot? Wild. Original. A straight-up rollercoaster of emotions. 🎢
And the sisters? I loved them all, but Flo was that girl. Instant favorite 🫶🏾 While the sisters brought fire, chaos, and grit, Flo moved with this quiet intensity that made her feel like the backbone of the operation. She wasn’t loud or flashy, but when shit hit the fan, she was the one holding it down. Her strength wasn’t just in how she fought but in how she endured. 😮💨😮💨The way she took charge mid-book when things got hella messy? I was locked in. Flo didn’t need to announce herself, but when she stepped up, everyone knew. She was steady and intelligent and felt like the emotional center of the story, even when she was breaking. I rooted for her the hardest.👏🏾👏🏾
And the gore??
It was giving full-blown action movie realness. Blood, bullets, body count; no one was safe, and I loved that. Every gunshot had weight, every fight felt earned, and when the bad guys got what was coming to them? I was screaming. Literally said, “Yesss, fuck you!!” out loud. It was extreme in the best way! Imagine watching John Wick but making it femme, messy, and queer-coded. Think Widows meets Birds of Prey, but grimier, grittier, and in every way, satisfying.
This book gave action, grit, heart, and just the right amount of chaos. The sisterhood felt real and ride or die. I was fully locked in the whole time. 😍

👮♀️ Cagney & Lacey – Die Kultserie, die Maßstäbe setzte! 🔥

The Residence

[Viewers be warned: The following content contains spoilers that may reveal key plot points, character developments or endings, potentially diminishing your viewing experience.]
Much have been narrated and extrapolated about the intricate plots interwoven into murder mysteries in recent years. From the classic Agatha Christie's "Hercule Poirot" and "Miss Marple" series and Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes' Mysteries" series to modern day's "Murder, She Wrote" and "Knives Out" series, we're definitely spoilt for choice. This doesn't include the investigative TV series that fall "somewhere in between" such as "CSI", "Criminal Minds", "The Mentalist", etc and the many true crime podcasts on air like "Killer Psyche" and "Sword and Scale".
In fact, the fascination to these murder mysteries and true crime stories expose the darker aspects of human curiosity, specifically our interests in acts of barbaric cruelty. Even so, we're still drawn to them, just like Icarus is drawn toward the sun's fatal embrace. Due to frequent exposure to clever plot twists, we find ourselves rarely satisfied by further murder mysteries or 'whodunnits'. Or so, we'd think... until this Netflix's limited TV series, "The Residence".
Personally, I'd like to think that "The Residence" is another brilliant creation by Paul William Davies, who also produced the politically themed "Scandal" and "For The People". Instead of a purely political TV series, Paul had successfully blended political themes with murder mystery intrigue into the limited series. This limited TV series also achieved a light and refreshing mix of subplot nuances, all the while retaining its content integrity while diverging from darker visual and print themes of its counterparts. This is also the first time I found myself amused by the characters' quirks and eccentricities.
Initially, the first two episodes were dedicated to establishing the groundwork, within the White House' setting. The White House covers approximately 18 acres [7.3 hectares] of land in Washington, D.C. The entire White House complex, including the residence, West Wing, East Wing, Eisenhower Executive Office Building, and Blair House, sits within approximately 52 acres [21 hectares] of land in President's Park. This murder mystery indirectly presents a vast narrative opportunity which encompasses a large cast of White House staffs and extensive plotlines.
The "knifing", as the poster indicated, happened inside the sprawling White House, which consisted of 132 rooms across four floors. The incident specifically took place within the Residence section of the White House itself. The seemingly fragile normalcy and silence was suddenly ripped apart by a shrill scream of an old lady from the third floor. Sadly, the scream went unheard, as most people were at a state dinner for Australian guests on another level or floor.
The incident? The Chief Usher of the White House, A.B. Wynter [starred by Giancarlo Esposito] was murdered in cold blood, with his body lying listlessly on the floor of the Game Room on the third floor and with both his wrists slit. This had resulted in a cascading sequence of events involving U.S. President's Social Secretary, Assistant Usher, U.S. President's brother, White House Executive Pastry Chef, U.S. President's Chief Adviser, etc. Then entered Cordelia Cupp [starred by Uzo Aduba] the Metropolitan Police Department detective - a woman defined by her sharp wit, no-nonsense demeanor, and a rapid-fire delivery left the witnesses mentioned above scrambling to keep up.
To avoid being implicated, many witnesses provided false testimonies when being interrogated by Detective Cordelia Cupp. Maintaining a patiently detached demeanor, Detective Cordelia surveyed the situation, like a birdwatcher scrutinizing a rare bird sighting. Director Paul, "interestingly" [as Detective Cordelia would frequently say] used Edwin Park [FBI Special Agent and Detective Cordelia's human "parrot"], Tripp Morgan [U.S. President's brother], and Elliot Morgan [U.S. President's "husband"] to sprinkle some light humor to this TV series. Indeed, this series' refreshing lightness stands in stark contrast to the often heavy and dark themes commonly found in other conventional murder mystery narratives.
Unlike those famous detectives with limited jurisdictions, Detective Cordelia's investigation extends to the entire White House staffs with a pool of 157 potential suspects. The sheer number of suspects with plausible motives of murdering Chief Usher A.B. Wynter had forced Detective Cordelia to refrain herself from dismissing anyone too quickly. Just as Sherlock Holmes used "smoking breaks" for mental clarity, Detective Cordelia employed "birding breaks" to de-stress, thus allowing her subconscious to process and find solutions. Despite her suspicions, she was forced to withdraw to an island for bird watching when the court classified the victim's death as a suicide instead of a murder.
"The Residence" is indeed the first of its genre to depart from the definitive conclusion of a detective in regards to the murderer because Detective Cordelia couldn't even solve the murder case before the court hastily classified the A.B. Wynter's death as a suicide. Notably, this series is also revolutionary as its episode titles and character names are deliberately linked to actual murder mystery movies. Finally, don't be surprised that towards the end of this series, there were a barrage of plot twists that can shatter your preconceived notion of how this murder can be resolved. My verdict: this series is excellent and highly recommended. Period.

The Bridge

The Bridge - Måns Mårlind, Hans Rosenfeldt & Björn Stein
Season Four This season's meta-plot flows the unpredictable twists and turns of the previous ones but the writers make the mistake of giving us too many hints about the killer too early on.These twists and turns are harder to follow and it feels like there are more sub-plots happening than in the previous seasons. This just makes it very hard to keep track of what is happening. To make matters worse we are missing our hero for what feels like half the season - probably more like a third.

We start with Saga in jail which is just terrible given we know there is no way that she would ever do this. We have seen her destroy the relationships around her to do the right thing.

Coupled with this is her boss, unsupportive as ever. But Linn's perspective in this case perplexes me. She is cold and uncaring but gives Saga so much space when she returns. These two positions don't fit. The writers seem to have forgotten that the reason we are here is for Saga. But just putting her on screen and showing her idiosyncracies is not enough. While this sort of ham-fisted writing might have worked during the first season when we were getting to know her it does not fly now. We know her and we want to see her being an amazing police officer. We do not get to see this until the final episode where her brilliance returns and she figures out that there were two killers and she saves Henrick's newly found daughter's life. The rest of the season we see her struggle with self-doubt and panic attacks. I don't think that this is plausible now more than in the first season.

The trauma that triggered the attacks happened before the first season and for them only to be manifesting now makes little sense. The show ends with Saga leaving the police force because her psychologist said that she did it all out of guilt.

While I don't disagree with the psychologist per se, just because Saga's original motivation for joining the force is guilt it doesn't mean that there are other reasons she should now stay. The whole episode feels like Saga is manipulated rather than helped as we have seen the same thing happen to her in earlier seasons. A person wanting to help her suggests a course of action - she does it and it blows up in her face. It also cheapens her whole character and life in the force. The rest of the surrounding story is good and the plot is interesting if somewhat hard to follow. The great supporting characters are back and I think that they made the right decision to base this season on the Danish side of the Bridge so we didn't have to see Linn. The season wasn't all that bad. It was just such a huge disappointment compared to the first three and knowing that we will see no more Saga is just really disappointing. They did well closing off all the plots that had been bubbling along. I would highly recommend watching the first three seasons but this one is only good if you need the closure.
