Africa’s first batch of mpox vaccines will this week finally reach the continent, weeks after they have been made available in other parts of the world. The 10,000 shots, donated by the US, will be used to tackle a dangerous new variant of the virus, formerly known as monkeypox, after a 2022 outbreak triggered global alarm. Vaccines have already been made available in more than 70 countries outside Africa, and the failure to provide the continent with anti-mpox shots until now displays worrying problems in the way international agencies deal with global health emergencies, medical officials and scientists warned last week. They say that it took the World Health Organization (WHO) until this month to officially start the process needed to give African countries easy access to large quantities of vaccines via international agencies – despite the fact that the disease has afflicted people there for decades. That process could have begun years ago, they told Reuters. Mpox is a potentially deadly infection that causes flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions, and spreads through close physical contact. It was declared a global health emergency by the WHO on 14 August after the new variant, known as clade Ib, began to spread from the Democratic Republic of the Congo into neighbouring African countries.

Yes, the disease, mpox clade 1, has affected people in Africa for decades, but usually didn't kill many and wasn't an issue outside Africa. When it did rear its head in the West, it was a new type, mpox clade 2b, with an even case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.16%, so obviously the West kept all the vaccines for itself.

Now that a new mutation of the first type, mpox clade 1 has a CFR of 4.9%, and spreads more easily than the original clade I strain which itself has a CRF between 1% - 10%, but didn't spread as easily, the West senses danger and throws a whopping 10,000 vaccines at the problem. which is sure to solve it.

Had Africa had access to the vaccines decades ago, we could probably have avoided the outbreak in the West in 2022-3.

Com a vitória, o Rubro-Negro alcançou os 70 pontos, na vice-liderança, e impediu o Galo, que tem 78 pontos, de soltar o grito de campeão nesta terça, quando ainda faltam três jogos pela frente tanto para o Rubro-Negro como para o time mineiro. Já o Vozão ficou na 8ª posição, com 49 pontos, após o revés.

Empurrado por mais de 47 mil torcedores, o Flamengo começou melhor, e abriu o placar logo aos 2 minutos de partida, quando Diego Ribas desarmou Fabinho na entrada da área e achou Gabriel Barbosa, que bateu colocado para superar o goleiro João Ricardo.

O Rubro-Negro continuou mandando na partida, e chegou a ampliar aos 21 minutos com Bruno Henrique, mas o gol foi anulado. Assim, quem voltou a balançar as redes, mas no segundo tempo, foi o Ceará, com Rick aos 25 minutos.

Porém, o Flamengo queria continuar vivo na luta pelo título do Brasileiro, e conseguiu aos 33 minutos, quando Matheuzinho aproveitou sobra de bola para bater muito forte.

The Health Benefits of Orthosilicic Acid

Orthosilicic acid is a natural substance found in seafood, seawater, vegetables, whole grains, and certain beverages, including beer. Sometimes referred to as soluble silica, an ortho silicic acid is a dietary form of silicon, a mineral involved in the formation of collagen and bone.

Orthosilicic acid is available in supplement form and is used to treat certain medical conditions and to boost hair and skin health. Some, but not all, of these uses have been supported by scientific evidence.

Note: Silicon should not be confused with silicone—a substance used to make medical devices, including breast implants.

Health Benefits

Some alternative medicine proponents claim that orthosilicic acid supplements can treat or prevent a wide range of health conditions, including:

Alzheimer's disease

Arthritis

Atherosclerosis

Heart disease

High cholesterol

Stroke

In addition, orthosilicic acid is said to improve nails, protect skin from the negative effects of aging, preserve dental health, and stimulate digestion.

To date, very few studies have tested the health effects of orthosilicic acid, so it's too soon to recommend it as a treatment for any condition. However, preliminary research shows that orthosilicic acid may offer certain health benefits in some key areas.

Bone Health

In early studies on human cells, scientists discovered that orthosilicic acid may help promote bone formation by stimulating the production of collagen (a protein found in connective tissue, including bone) and promoting the development of bone-forming cells.1

A 2008 study from BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders suggested that orthosilicic acid may help protect against loss of bone density. For the study, 136 women with osteopenia took calcium, vitamin D, and either orthosilicic acid or a placebo every day for a year.

By the study's end, participants given the vitamins with orthosilicic acid showed greater improvements in bone formation. According to the study's authors, this finding indicates that orthosilicic acid shows promise as a treatment for osteoporosis.

However, studies have been inconsistent in determining if taking an orthosilicic acid supplement is as effective as consuming silicon through diet. So far, research indicates that getting silicon from food may be more effective.

Although not a major plant nutrient, silica is still considered to be important in any grow room. One of the most abundant components in the earth’s crust, silicon is a major contributor to the plant kingdom. It comprises of about 55-70% of soil mass and just happens that some plants have the ability to gather high levels of silica in their tissue. These plants have high levels of silica compared to minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus.

In the past, agronomists ignored the use of silicon fertilizer but lately, due to its benefits to the growth of a plant and its ability to improve plants resistance to disease it is becoming more popular with many plant growers who apply silica to their gardens for a wide range of plants.

The use of silica is common among hydroponic farmers who add it directly to the reservoir away from other nutrients since the mineral becomes sticky when added together with other concentrated salts.

Liquid seaweed fertilizer is simply what its name suggests: a fertilizer that has been derived from natural seaweed sources. Seaweed is collected, some of the saltwater rinsed away and then allowed to decompose or ferment in water until the plant material is broken down into a liquid or slurry.

Seaweeds - especially kelp, a large brown seaweed - and liquid seaweed extract have been used for many years as fertilizers in commercial crop production because of their positive effect on plant growth and yield. As the trend towards using sustainable products increases, these products are gaining more popularity both commercially and in home gardens to meet plant demands. Known as biofertilizers, or biostimulants, they offer many benefits over conventional fertilizers.

As a new type of fertilizer, water soluble fertilizer has obvious advantages compared with traditional fertilizers and granulated compound fertilizers. It is a quick-acting fertilizer with good water solubility, no residue, can be completely dissolved in water, and can be directly absorbed and utilized by the roots and leaves of crops.

The integration of water and fertilizer has attracted much attention because of its convenience, high efficiency, water and fertilizer saving, and less environmental pollution. Many countries also regards the integration of water and fertilizer as an important strategic goal of agricultural development.

Water-soluble fertilizers can be divided into two types: solid water-soluble fertilizer and liquid water-soluble fertilizer. From the nutrient content, there are macro-nutrient water-soluble fertilizers, medium element water-soluble fertilizers, trace element water-soluble fertilizers, amino acid-containing water-soluble fertilizers, humic acid-containing water-soluble fertilizers, and organic water-soluble fertilizers.

Applied at the beginning of the cropping cycle, controlled release fertilizers (CRFs) are coated fertilizers that deliver nutrients to plants over a defined and extended period of time. Generally, CRF nutrient release is driven by average soil temperature. Higher soil temperatures cause the fertilizer to release nutrients more quickly. Greenhouse growers have much greater control over the indoor production environment compared to outside container nurseries, where CRF use is more prevalent.

Humic acid is a mixture of natural organic macromolecular compounds, which exists in all soils, plants and animals,and have been widely used in agricultural production in recent years due to their unique physiological functions.

The one source of humic acids are the sedimentation layers referred to as Leonardite.

Leonardite is organic matter, which has not reached the state of coal and differs from soft brown coal by its high oxidation degree, a result of the process of coal formation (bog > peat > coal), and high humic acid content as well as higher carboxyl groups.

Now Humic fertilizer has been widely used in agricultural production in recent years due to its unique physiological functions.

Chitosan Fertilizer functions as it can start, regulate and directly affect the opening and closing of certain gens and regulate the process of plant growth. Oligosaccharin can reduce and eliminate the encroachment of pathogenic agents especially against fungal infections, which are difficult to control. The product has no poison, no residue is left over and is fit for organic farming and nonpolluting. Chitosan oligosaccharides can activate plants and induce plants to produce antiviral substances.

WASHINGTON – Hanalei Aipoalani, 42, of Waianae, Hawaii, pled guilty in federal court today to embezzling more than $500,000 from AmeriCorps and to agreeing to accept a bribe for the administration of grants under the CARES Act. 

The announcement was made by Channing D. Phillips, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Columbia; Eli S. Miranda, Special Agent in Charge, FBI Honolulu Field Office; and Deborah Jeffrey, Inspector General of AmeriCorps. 

Aipoalani pled guilty to embezzlement and agreeing to take a bribe. Both charges carry a statutory maximum of 10 years and financial penalties. Under the federal sentencing guidelines, Aipoalani faces a likely recommended sentence of between 70 and 87 months in prison. The Honorable Reggie B. Walton took the plea and scheduled sentencing for June 24, 2021. 

“The United States Department of Justice will prosecute, to the fullest extent of the law, those individuals who choose to abuse their positions of power to enrich themselves at the cost of the American people,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Phillips. 

“The defendant conspired to enrich himself with taxpayer dollars intended to support at-risk communities in Hawai’i, he victimized legitimate volunteers and others by stealing their identities to perpetrate multiple fraud schemes, and he submitted falsified documentation and certifications to the government, all to the detriment of their community. Our investigation also disrupted an ongoing scheme to steal much-needed pandemic relief funds. I commend U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their partnership on this case,” said Deborah Jeffrey, Inspector General of AmeriCorps. 

“Programs such as AmeriCorps are designed to impact the nation in the most positive ways. Their goal is to help others and to meet the critical needs of the communities they serve”, said Special Agent in Charge Eli S. Miranda. “AmeriCorps trusted Hanalei Aipoalani with their mission in the State of Hawai’i and were ultimately betrayed. Aipoalani exploited his position and intentionally stole funds meant for the betterment of the community for his own selfish entitlements. The FBI will never stand for this and will enthusiastically identify and pursue anyone who violates the public’s trust.” 

AmeriCorps is a federally funded network of national service programs that address critical community needs like increasing academic achievement, mentoring youth, fighting poverty, sustaining national parks, preparing for disasters, and more. AmeriCorps’ national service members commit to service for a set period of time, usually a year, in exchange for a living allowance, funding to be used for college tuition, and other benefits. 

From December 2014 through May 2019, Aipoalani embezzled more than $527,000 from a non-profit that hosted an AmeriCorps program, by submitting false claims for payments to AmeriCorps members and directing those payments into his own bank accounts and by creating fraudulent invoices from non-profits for reimbursement by AmeriCorps. As part of his embezzlement, 

Aipoalani used at least nine inactive or former AmeriCorps’ members’ names, without their knowledge or consent, to fraudulently claim living allowances and other payments, which he then diverted to his own use. 

As part of his plea, Aipoalani admitted to conspiring with his wife, Angelita Aipoalani, to enroll Angelita Aipoalani as an AmeriCorps member, even though she did not perform AmeriCorps service activities, and to cause a second non-profit to pay Angelita Aipoalani more than $69,000 for no compensable work. Aipoalani also admitted to engaging in a scheme to fraudulently obtain AmeriCorps education awards for Angelita Aipoalani. 

Angelita Aipoalani has been separately charged with conspiring to embezzle from Americorps. 

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (“CARES”) Act, which was passed by Congress and signed into law in or about March 2020, provided financial relief to individuals, businesses, states, and localities suffering the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Among other relief programs, the CARES Act created a $150 billion Coronavirus Relief Fund ("CRF") to be distributed to states, localities, and tribal governments to support expenditures incurred due to COVID-19. Government entities that received money from the CRF could use the funds, among other things, to make grants to small businesses to reimburse the costs of business interruption caused by required closures and to provide economic relief for those suffering employment interruption.

In August 2020, Aipoalani was hired to serve as Honolulu City and County’s Department of Community Service’s CARES Program Administrator and was responsible for administering CRF programs. In that capacity, Aipoalani agreed to accept a financial benefit from an applicant who filed two fraudulent applications for CARES Act Funds under the agreement that Aipoalani would influence the approval of the grant applications and would receive a financial benefit in return for the approvals. 

The FBI, the Inspector General for AmeriCorps, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office are committed to investigating and prosecuting individuals who defraud the AmeriCorps program and programs under the CARES Act.
