Process Binder
ideas:
1. make a still-video with the recording and the picture (put the recording in garageband and put the picture on top as the “cover”) so you can scroll over the photo on the website and hear the music that goes with it
2. short description of photo under “portfolio” tab and also link a page with a lot of potential pictures to it
Here is a picture of the website so far! It’s still in the works, but I have a general idea of what it will look like now!!! :~)

Critical Binder Week 4, Entry 16:
I have sewn int he hair to the canvas! This is most likely the hardest hair I will have to sew into a canvas in my Capstone because they are not individual braids, but rather loose hair that then forms a braid. It is very sturdy and the braid turned out really well!

Painting Progress 10
In all honesty, I am quote tired of seeing this painting. I however wasn’t (and still am not) satisfied with the outcome. I decided to add the streaks of red to represent not only blood but the feeling of being drowned under the weight of confusion and despair.

RESEARCH (02/14/19): Interesting study about how gender stereotypes affect children around the world and what the stereotypes surrounding femininity and masculinity are.

It's finished! This is my finished sculpture of a coral reef undergoing the bleaching process. This is what will be displayed at ArtsFest at Maryland Day. I also made a little storybook that tells the story of a coral being bleached.

Update 4/2/17
Okay the best way I can approach this is to be reasonable
I can probably only get the first movement recorded in time, but will continue with this project even after scholars is done.
Music majors have an extremely busy schedule. And with juries approaching, this makes us even less available.
I want the composition to be done, that’s what matters most. That the complete set of all four movements and stages of Grief are completed.
And when I continue with this after scholars is done, I might even add in a 5th movement in the middle, for the stage of grief “Bargaining” .
Depression has a good 4 and a half minutes of good ideas and should be all set once I get them organized and then orchestrated.
Acceptance is still barely started but I have an overwhelming 20 minutes of audio recorded loose ideas that I will have to put into Noteflight and decide what stays.

The link above shows how I will go about making the fire effect for the beginning. This is one of the parts that I’m really excited for, but also the part I feel could end the most poorly overall because fire can look very fake very easily. While what he shows will work well for the beginning of the fire coming into view, I will need to adjust the base of the fire for the later parts, so it can be large enough to basically engulf an entire corner of the wall. In addition, I’m going to try to make a bit of a longer loop to try to make it less noticeable.

What’s it’s Been Like Meeting Different Women of Color:
In the end, we interviewed 14 different women of color; asians (south and east), middle easterners, africans (west and north), caribbeans, latinas, and women with mixed ethnicities. It surely was an experience meeting with all of them and listening to what they had to say. Just like what Merissa and I wanted, we wanted to hear something different from what we tell ourselves everyday.
As two black women of the same age and living situation, our experiences as women of color are close to being the same; because we had a variety of women, we received multiple answers to questions we always ask ourselves. However, there was one question that ultimately united all of us together; what do you love about being a woman of color? Every single woman we interviewed responded with, “I love being different”. There’s such a liberating and exhilarating feeling connected to having another culture tied to you. As we all learned to accept and love who we are in a society where misrepresentation is prevalent, our culture is what pushes us up.
If we had more time, I would have loved to meet up with other women of color. Many of them told us to continue with this project if we could. It’s something we’ve been thinking about actually. We now know that we aren’t the only ones who find this topic so important and close to our hearts.

Sketchbook Process 3/17/16
Pictured above is my process in my sketchbook. I wrote down ideas, celebrities, designers, and objects that inspire my mood for this collection. I break down what materials I might want to use so I can get an idea of the color scheme, something I think is very important in a collection. Color schemes help fluidity between looks and help the collection flow better overall. The center picture is a sketch that I think I am no longer going to make but this sketch really inspired my other rough sketches that I will be using for his project. These small rough sketches can be seen on the bottom right corner. I am not much of a sketch artist so I really just use theee to summarize the look I’m going for so I don’t forget something o originally wanted. These pages are the guideline for my project artistically.

CPSA 250: Individual Capstone Research Practicum Learning Agreement
Name: Sarah Kim
Email: [email protected]
Advisor: Harold Burgess
Weekly Meeting Time: Wednesdays 5:00-5:50 PM
Purpose/Mission Statement: Put this in the form of a few sentences about what you hope to accomplish this semester. What will the end result of your project be? What will you learn or gain from the experience? Do you have other goals?
My goal for this project is to prepare and perform a Sophomore Violin Recital. After this project, I would have learned how navigate the recital booking software for the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, three new complete pieces, how to collaborate with fellow music colleagues in the recital preparation process, and how to order catering for an estimated audience size. Finally, by receiving feedback from important music faculty and music major colleagues, I would have the opportunity to learn the mistakes from this experience, and to ultimately better my performance energy for future recitals.
Learning Objectives:
These are more specific than the mission statement. Be sure your objectives are clearly stated and respond to what you expect to do, learn, and experience as a result this project. Please list at least three. These should scaffold toward your final project.
I will reserve the Leah Smith Recital and Lecture Hall for the performance and the Student Lounge for the reception.
I will plan a recital program in consultation with my private teacher, Dr. Stern, and my capstone faculty advisor, Harold Burgess.
I will learn the following three new pieces:
Johann Sebastian Bach Sonata no. 1 in g minor
Jean Sibelius Violin Concerto
Josef Suk 4 Pieces for Violin and Piano.
I will prepare a 30 minute reception taking place after the recital, with light refreshments.
Workshop Process:
How will you complete the project? What research or preliminary work is required? What materials will you need? What steps will you take to create the finished project? How will you perform or present your work?
How will you document your work and research in your process binder/notebook?
I will complete this project over a span of three months, January through March, in order to appropriately prepare the repertoire and organize the logistics of the concert. The preliminary work of booking the recital hall and reception area, as well as the planning of repertoire was completed before the start of the new year to ensure maximum time for solely music practice and preparation. In order to finish the project, I plan to prepare the assigned repertoire, perform the recital, and hold the post-performance reception. This project will be performed on April 5th at 7:30 PM in Leah Smith Hall.
I will document my work and research in my process binder by posting audio and video clips on my Tumblr page. These clips will show the gradual evolution of the music preparation process, from sight-reading the music to the final performance.
Resources:
Please include a list of resources you have used/may use in the planning and execution of your project. You may include books, websites, music, video, personal communication, etc.
Repertoire Recordings:

I have some photos to choose from! These are from a photoshoot I did recently with my friend and I think they reflect different moods, especially with the contrast in lighting in a lot of the pictures. They’re also taken in an abandoned house, which gives it a different air as well. It could be ominous or adventurous.

Critical Binder Week 4, Entry 15:
I have updated the presentation of my paper mache tree, and have explored some ways to stabilize the background of the canvases so that I can then hang them on the tree. The way I will have the audience look at the tree is from the bottom up, which will start with the African scene, to be representative of the origin of the braid and where it “stemmed” or originated from.

Painting Progress 9
I have finally finally gotten to the 3rd painting. In all honesty, I do not know where I’m heading with this painting because what I intended to do with it is not what ended up happening. With Artsfest a week away, I’m scrambling to find a way to make it relate with everything else that this project is comprised off.

PRACTICING USING PHOTOSHOP (02/14/19) - For my Capstone Project, I’m planning on creating portraits of each of the interviewees participating in my project that reflect some of the main themes discussed in their interviews. To do this, I will be using Photoshop and other art mediums to edit the portraits I take of each interviewee. Since I’ve never really used Photoshop before, I experimented with the program by creating this composition. Through this endeavor, I learned a lot about how to use Photoshop to edit photos, especially photos of people. I especially liked the use of overlays to add texture to her face, and the use of various filters or tools to edit the lighting in the photo. These are tools that I will likely use in the final products of my Capstone Project. I hope to build on these skills as I begin taking and editing the photos for my project.

Stumped
I have discovered that halfway through the semester is when I really start to drag, both academically and creatively. I’m finding it harder than I thought it would be to finish my capstone project because I cannot motivate myself to do anything that isn’t due like the next day. It is kind of like writer’s block, but different. I’m really really trying to get over it though. Now that I’m on spring break, I have a lot to accomplish to get done on time. I think that I just need to push myself a little harder to start working on it. Hopefully once I do start working, it will be easier to make some progress. I think other art scholars are experiencing the same thing, but I don’t know. Hopefully it isn’t just me dragging and making slow progress.

Mvmt 2 completed?!
https://www.noteflight.com/scores/view/3d0370b60378674e263ee9c07d4d51e139aaa03e It's pretty much done. Feedback is greatly appreciated! So, how did I do on being angry? Could be angrier indeed... Symbolic things worth noting. look at the motifs. some of them are from the first movement.I gave them all namesred is "dead"- pitches DEAD of course.blue is "resolute"- symbolizes the desire to improve ochre/mustard is "time"- scale degrees ti to me in some important key.magenta is " memory"- symbolizes remembering back to a time before the griefpurple is "no"- every time you see it, it's the character saying "no" symbolizes denial. Green is when something about one of the motifs is off, perhaps the character is lying to themselves (The person that caused me grief is an oboe player, thus the oboe in this piece does more green than the other instruments) cello solo is basically you/ the protagonist/ the thought process e.g measures 100-107 the protagonist starts remembering the past (memory motif) and so the oboe is messing up your resolution.Throughout the piece, you want to be in D minor. The oboe is playing your resolution in the parallel major, making you feel like it's okay. But it's not okay. It's all weird and stuff. I feel like there's a better word than motif for the longer melodic lines. "Themes" perhaps? If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, anything else constructive, please talk to me I'm super glad to talk about my composition!
