Lonesome West at an Outlaws Request

@venesins Lonesome West artwork has reminded me of a story my grandpa once told me about Billy the Kid. It has also, inevitably, inspired me to write a little~

My grandpa had relatives, (I can't remember for sure if it was an aunt or great aunt, or what her name was exactly...) who had a homestead in which Billy and his gang showed up at. They dropped off one of his crew who were injured along with one other, telling her and her husband to help nurse them back to health. He threatened them and said he would be coming back for them. The coming spring, he did return, paying her family handsomely as a reward. Her family used the funds to open a general store.

This story's beginning was inspired by these things~

You were weeding the garden when you heard the far-off shots, only glancing for a moment before turning back to pulling the intrusive plants. It wasn’t uncommon to hear such things out by your quaint little homestead. There was plenty of game over the hills near the river, but there were also the tracks that ran through there. You couldn’t count the number of times passengers from the nearby town took shots from the passing train. It was more of an annoyance than anything these days.

However, at the sounds of far-off hooves, you stopped and stood to look over the sunbaked field of grass past your grove of trees.

It was alarming to see a small group of riders barreling over the ridge, one draped over the back of his companion. Several riderless horses followed behind, ladened with saddlebags and gear.

You hoped the group would continue to the road leading into town or turn toward the desert wilds. Your soul dropped when, with a flourish of blackened gloves, the rider at the head instead turned the steeds towards your little heaven.

You were alone. There would be no help should you need it this far from town. Balling your hands into the folds of your dress, you braced for whatever was to come.

Alright, alright, I'll admit it: I only wanted to draw Husk in a cowboy outfit and it spiraled from there. But I'm not mad at that. 😆

Fun fact: as easy as it is for me to draw Husk, as hard it is to draw Angel. And finding references for 4 arms?? Yeah, that's a pain in the ass. So all his arms are mine this time. 😅 I'm pretty proud of how they turned out though.

Fun fact II: the spider I used for Angel's speech bubble in the first frame is the spider Charlie used in the beginning of Episode 5. I thought it's cute.

"So handsome, wanna grab a drink with me as well, not just make me one?"

Angel heard the woman's laugh from the other end of the bar. Normally he was just entertainment, singing for the crowd and keeping them entertained, but tonight was slow, there was only two people in the place, so he was behind the bar keeping busy.

Sirpentious was sitting, alone, over at the corner table clearly working on something, and the current source of the blond's ire, the older woman sitting at the bar flirting with Husk.

"Not interested, but thanks." Husk grunted, having been turning down flirtatious offers from the friend of the owner all night. Focused as he was on the drink he was making, the hand creeping towards his hat wasn't noticed.

"Come now, Husk darling, I'm sure I could liven up your night a little, say-"

Whatever she was about to say was cut off, as was the path of her hand that had clearly been heading to the barkeep's hat, as Angel marched over.

Without thinking, the hat was snatched off Husk's head by Angel, just shy of the reaching fingers from the owner's friend. Instead the well made and body heat warmed hat was settled on his own head with a smug smirk.

"I think he said he's not interested." He drawled at her with a cheeky grin and wink shot Husk's way, getting an amused smirk and a curious quirk to the barkeep's brow, but no anger at him grabbing his hat.

The hat stayed his the rest of the night.
