Honestly Index Dunham gets essentially no appreciation, do you happen to have any thoughts on him?

I DO. HAVE SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT HIM.

I hc that the RLF are split up into multiple factions and all of them have their own idea of what a liberated Rubicon looks like. You have those that follow Father Dolmayan that have a religious reverence/fear of the Coral, and want to stop its industrial use once they kick the corporations off Rubicon.

Meanwhile you have other factions that want to reclaim control over their planet and regain their position as the powerhouse in the galaxy - which means exploiting Coral, industrially and defensively. Where Index Dunham falls, I haven't quite decided yet, but from his arena profile which says he was a worker...

Well, either he is a very, VERY spry 70+ year old unaugmented human or there was still illicit Coral mining going on under the PCA's noses - which we know because of BAWS hiding a small Coral well in their arsenal. No doubt Dunham was probably working in one of those illegal mines, trying to harvest as much as possible to feed the mealworms which in turn feeds the dwindling Rubiconian population...

Then the corporations crashed the party, and they sniffed out every single small well that the Rubiconians were using, punting Dunham out of work but still in possession of a BASHO AC.

I don't think Dunham has, like, big ideological dreams like Flatwell and Dolmayan do, or even ambitions like Ziyi does as a Coral Warrior. I feel like Dunham is someone who just desperately wants to eke out a life where they're not scrounging for scraps they can't even survive off of. The only way he can do that now, though, is fighting corporate forces in a repurposed construction AC, and putting up a pretty decent fight considering. Guy tried to solo three ACs at once, and if you sit back and just let Iguazu and Volta handle it - yeah, they win eventually, but it's very, very slow going.

Dunham, in another life would've been an amazing AC pilot. In this one, someone who just wants these scavenging hyenas off his planet so his people can stop being starved to death.

yep!! It was probably rocky at first because it'd feel like Iguazu's finally hit that hallucination stage and he is So Not Here for it haha But then…the tinnitus…is gone? There is someone who's like, friendly? A little too enthusiastic, but she cares? Down to break the rules with him? You know what, maybe he's gone off the deep end, but this deep end ain't too bad.

Meanwhile, Ayre's like…fine with 621guazu. She's kinda got to prod him to get him to do things sometimes, and he'll also make some pretty outlandish requests. Like. Raven…I can't wipe all your debt for you…I can't make COAM either…but it's about what she expected for a 'human', and he does go along with her ideas most of the time so it's a working relationship. Probably helps that she isn't his 'owner' but also, she has requests and suggestions rather than orders.

Walter: Got a job for you, 621. This one comes from me personally. There's exactly one Wendy's left on Rubicon, and they just brought back the Baconator. I don't know about you, but both myself and the rest of the crew are tired of living off Coral mealworms and smuggled-in combat rations.

Your job is simple: Insert, make your way to the Wendy's drive through and place the order. Once it's ready, pick it up and make your way to the rendezvous point for extraction. I've forwarded everyone's orders, as well as the needed COAM, to your account.

Intel suggests Balam already has a token force on-site to claim the Wendy's for themselves, including a reinforced MT squad and that one Redgun that keeps sending you hate mail, Iguana or whatever his name is. They're not mission-critical targets, but I can throw a little extra in for every hostile destroyed. That should send a clear message to Balam that the Wendy's is neutral ground.

Don't let us down, 621. This one's for the guys who keep putting your AC back together after every sortie. Ayre: Raven, can... can we get spicy nuggets? It should be an option in the Four for $4 and you know I love spicy food. I don't have the COAM on hand but I live in your head anyway, so... y'know.

cowboy tartaglia… he’s both the widely feared type and the generous type. think of him like robin hood but a major sadomasochist!!

your first encounter with him is as dusk gives way to night, working a slow evening at the bar. you’re sure you’ve washed all the tabletops at least two times more than necessary and the glasses have never looked so spotless but alas, it’s far from closing time. only a couple regular patrons and sickly looking drunks sit at a handful of tables and all seem to be lost in their own worlds until the front doors swing open with an unceremonious screech and clatter. you lazily look towards the entrance as a pair of boots loudly clacks your way, the signature jingle of spurs following in harmony. the boots belong to a sun-kissed, smiling, and freckle covered ginger who’s giving you a boyish smile despite the scar that draws upwards from his lips. you’re almost charmed by his appearance alone but it’s his dangerously unbuttoned shirt paired with a tip of his hat that really puts the nail in your coffin. he slides into a stool with practised ease and folds his hands atop the bar.

“‘evening, miss. mind fixin’ up a nice glass of sarsaparilla and bourbon for me? take your time, i’ve got a lovely view from here,” his expression borders on leering and usually you’d be quick to shoot down such flirtations but something about him had butterflies forming in your gut. short on words without risk of stuttering, you nod and attempt to give him a pleasant smile but you’re sure it comes off as foolish more than anything. the man seems endeared regardless, resting his chin in his hand with a soft chuckle.

you turn quickly to avoid making a real joke of yourself and focus on making the best damn drink of your life despite the simple instructions. turning back and placing the glass in front of him, he softly thanks you with a wink and takes a sip before humming in approval.

“you’ve got a steady hand clearly, what’s the name, little miss? ajax is mine. would look pretty comin’ outta your mouth,” and you’re swallowing thickly to even out your voice and wet your painfully dry throat before voicing your own.

“ah… ajax… suits you,” only simple words seem to come out in your nervousness but he seems happy to hear it all nonetheless.

the rest of your shift is spent exchanging idle chatter with him as you pay little attention to the other patrons to focus on just how pretty ajax is and how sweet his words sound swirling around your head. you come to learn he spends his days running errands for those who can’t afford to do it themselves and, though it sends a shiver down your spine, how he punishes those in need of correction. you don’t pry on the latter but his giving nature has you swooning while you lose track of time.

at the end of the evening he’s inviting you back to the hotel he’s got for the night and promising a good ride plus more if you’re willing to hang around him longer.

You can see the LSO (landing signal officer) standing there directly under the nose gear, keeping an eye on the pilot's technique.

Also note the two A-6 INTRUDERS all buttoned up to the right. The Intruders are parked TOW... "tail over water". Their main mounts are right up against the deck edge coaming with their tails hanging out over the side of the ship. The flight deck isn't all that big, and doing things like this help to maximize the space they do have.
