Tell Me What You’re Searching For- Chapter 2: Self Awareness
Later that night, Peter was making his rounds throughout the house, checking on each member of the Guardians. He was just walking up the hallway that led to Groot’s nursery when he heard music coming from the baby’s room in the form of Groot’s ukulele that Gamora gave him for his 2 week birthday.
Peter opens the door by the tiniest crack, making sure not to let the door make the smallest creak, which would surely wake up Groot.
As he got a better view of Groot’s nursery, Peter saw something most peculiar. Rocket was sitting on Groot’s rocking chair, cradling the baby Flora Colossus, who was quietly crying in his pot while the raccoon was holding him in his arms, while at the same time playing Groot’s ukulele gently and singing to his son softly.
Peter strained to hear what Rocket was singing, but when he was able to discern what the raccoon was singing, the humie smiled.
“Tell me something, Groot.
Are you happy with these assholes?
Or do you need more?
Is there somethin’ else that you’re searchin’ for?”
It was sweet that Rocket was singing to Groot. Even though the baby wasn’t officially the raccoon’s adopted child, Rocket was protective of the tiny Flora Colossus and would do anything for Groot’s safety and well-being as the seedling mindlessly strummed gently on the ukulele strings.
“I’m falling.
In all the good times I find myself...
Longin’ for change.
And in the bad times, I fear myself-.”
Just then, Peter clumsily stumbles while leaning against the doorway as he listened to Rocket’s sweet dulcet voice singing to Groot. Rocket’s ears didn’t even twitch at the sudden disturbance in the otherwise quiet room as the raccoon put down Groot’s ukulele by the baby’s crib. Unfortunately, Rocket’s enhanced hearing picked up on every single nuance of sound, no matter how soft.
“I heard you, Star-Munch.” Rocket said as he cradled Groot in his arms and carried him over to the changing table so that he could place a cloth bag over Groot’s pot so that no dirt would fall out when he laid Groot down for bedtime.
“Well, I... um...” Peter struggled to find the words as Rocket walked over to Groot’s crib, undid the latch and swung the side of the crib open. “I thought that Groot could use some soup. Kraglin made some soup just for him.”
“Groot hates soup.” Rocket deadpanned to Peter as he tucked Groot in for the night with the baby’s favorite blanket. “Plus, he’s been throwing up all night and unless you want to wear Groot Puke on your pajamas tonight, I would advise not giving him anything to eat.”
“Okay...” Peter was still wondering what influenced Rocket’s sudden change in music taste. “You have a lovely singing voice though.”
Rocket grabbed one of his blasters that was laying on Groot’s nightstand and aimed it towards the humie.
“Yo, yo, Rocket, chill out!” Peter begs for his life as Rocket regains his composure and puts the blaster in his holster. “What’s wrong, dude? Tell me.”
Groot stirs in his crib. Rocket’s ears pick up the subtle coos coming from Groot as he whispers to Peter. “Fine. But let’s talk outside. Groot needs to get some sleep.” Rocket conceded as he and Peter walked out of the nursery and closed the door behind him.
“What’s gotten into you?” Peter questioned.
“It’s nothing.” Rocket replied.
“C’mon, Rocket, it has to be something. Tell me.” Peter encourages as he placed a caring hand on Rocket’s shoulder. “Just you and me.”
Rocket took a deep breath in “Fine. I-.”
“Hey, Cap’n?” Kraglin barged in to the conversation at hand. “Do we have anymore soup?”
“No, Kraglin.” Peter answered as Kraglin looked depressed at the response. “Now, I’m talking to Rocket about something private. Oh, guys!” He exasperated as all the other Guardians, except Groot, came crowding into the narrow hallway. “GUYS!” The humie shouted over everyone else as they became silent. “There’s a baby sleeping on the other side of this door and if anyone wakes him up, Rocket is gonna have your head.”
As soon as Peter said that, Groot’s crying could be heard from the other side of the door. Rocket excused himself to soothe the tiny Flora Colossus.
Moments later, Rocket re-emerged from the nursery, carrying Groot in his arms. “Groot’s still not feeling good.” He said as he gently rocked Groot back and forth in his arms. “Go ahead, Quill. Whatever you wanna ask me, you can ask in front of Groot too.” Rocket then looked at the other Guardians. “And everyone else here too.”
“Alright, Rocket.” Peter was careful in choosing the next words he would say to the raccoon. “I, um, all I want to know is what happened to your sudden change in music choice. I mean, we’re not used to hearing this sorta song whenever you have control of the Zune. So, what’s up with that?”
“Alright, Quill.” Rocket took a deep breath and sighed. “The other night, Groot couldn’t get to sleep, so we watched a little bit of TV until he nodded off. Well...”
“Well, what?” Peter was genuinely curious.
“I took five minutes to sleep myself. What? Bob Ross puts me to sleep sometimes.” Rocket replied as Groot gasped in horror. “Sorry, Groot, but you know that I don’t like him as much as you do.”
“Get back to the story, Rocket...” Gamora rolled her eyes as she too didn’t like Rocket’s lengthy explanations for everything.
“Okay!” Rocket exclaims. “Anyways, when I woke back up, Bob Ross was off the air and a movie was coming on.”
“What movie?” Mantis asked.
Rocket took a deep breath. Surely the other Guardians would be in shock at his answer. “A Star is Born.”
Peter was indeed perplexed, as well as the other Guardians. “A Star is Born? Isn’t that movie like 80-some years old?”
“No, Star-Munch.” Rocket answered. “Not the one that’s as old as your grandma’s panties.” He snidely remarked as the humie fumed. “I’m talking about the one that they remade last year with Bradley Cooper starring and directing.”
“Who’s Bradley Cooper, Rocket?” Gamora questions Rocket as he holds a picture frame in his right paw.
“Um... No one...” Rocket shyly replies as he tries, but fails to hide said picture frame behind his back while holding Groot in his other paw as Gamora snatches the item from him.
“Is this him?” Gamora questions Rocket as he nods reluctantly.
“You sleep with his picture every night?” Peter was shocked by this revelation as his eyes widened. Rocket handed Groot and the picture frame over to Drax.
Rocket’s tail puffed up as he stood upright in Peter’s face. “NO!” He exclaims as he pointed a finger at the Terran. “I put that picture over by Groot’s nightstand at night so that he has someone else to look up to than that stupid Bob Ross guy!”
“I am Groo!” A tiny voice chirped.
“Shut up! Vin Diesel is just as bad as-.” It takes Rocket a minute to notice who that tiny voice was coming from. He then runs over to Gamora and picks Groot up from his pot. “Groot! You said your first word!” Rocket congratulates the twig as he hugs him.
“Well, you clearly haven’t watched anything that Chris Pratt has been in.” Peter stated. “Best Terran actor ever.”
“Yeah, if ya take into account that his name sounds like you’re saying ‘Crisp Rat’, Star-Munch!” Rocket couldn’t help but fall over in laughter at his statement as the other Guardians, except Peter, joined in on the laughter, Drax having the most boisterous cackle.
“Shut up! Just shut up you jerks!” Peter was not pleased at the other Guardians’ reactions towards his favorite actor. “Drax, how about you? What actor do you like the most?”
“I don’t watch many movies in my free time, Quill.” Drax replied calmly. “But when I do watch Terran TV, I love to watch wrestling. Dave Bautista is a particular favorite of mine and the way he turns invisible after he says ‘You can’t see me’ inspires me to do the same.”
“Drax, I think that’s John Cena...” Peter explains quietly as the Destroyer glared at him. “But, you do you, man.” Drax then backs off as Peter looks at Gamora. “Gammy? How about you?”
“Thanos never allowed me to watch TV when I was under his parentage.” Gamora admitted. “But once, when I was a teenager, I snuck out to the movie theater and watched this film called ‘Avatar’. It was so beautiful and thought-provoking.”
“Ego never allowed me that luxury either.” Mantis revealed. “So, I just made up stories in my imagination.”
“Alright.” Peter then turns to Kraglin. “Kraglin! My man! I’m sure that you and Yondu have watched many movies over the years. Tell us which actor is your favorite.”
“Well, I don’t have a favorite actor, per say, but I do have favorite and least favorite directors, Quill.” Kraglin answered as he took a sip of his soup.
“Okay, how about you tell us then.” Peter invited the Xandarian as he sat down to listen to Kraglin.
“Well, for one thing, I used to love all these movies that these Russo Brothers made.” Kraglin began. “But then their egos got too big and they thought that it would be ‘cute’ and ‘funny’ if they killed off all the fan favorite characters in one movie and in the next one they bring back all the fan favorites characters that they just killed off only to stab ya in the heart by killing some of the oldest and most beloved characters in the most tear-jerking way while letting the other characters ride off in the sunset.”
Everyone stared at Kraglin in disbelief. They couldn’t understand what he was talking about or where he got this disdain for these so-called “Russo Brothers”.
“Um, are there any directors that you do like, Kraglin?” Peter asked inquisitively.
“Yeah, this James Gunn guy is really talented.” Kraglin replied. “He’s so talented that so far he has made TWO MOVIES that perfectly retells some of our most important adventures and how we formed our family.” The Xandarian added as he handed Quill two DVD cases containing the movies in question. “If y’all want, we can watch ‘em right now.”
“No.” Rocket answered as he cradled Groot in his pot. “It’s way past Groot’s bedtime and if you guys want an angry, stubborn Groot in the morning, then be my guest and let him stay up all night long.” He then turned around as he retreated to his and Groot’s room for the night with the baby.
“Yeah, I think that we should all go to bed too.” Peter declared. “We’ll talk more about this later.” He added as the Guardians went to their separate rooms and he and Gamora retreated to the master suite.——————————————————————————————————

MTG: Nissa’s Personality, Powers, and Future
Hello everyone! Time to do a personality profile on Nissa. I held this one off, along with the Liliana one, because they’re far more difficult to pin down. That said, she’s not the shy girl in the corner she might seem. Nissa is pretty beautiful. I’m not just talking about her physical. I’m talking about who she is. Join me as we look deeper into this beautiful elf.

Who is Nissa
Nissa is very reserved. It’s hard to see just who she is without some deep thought and inspection. It’s taken me a very long time to write this article because she’s a delicate flower who’s not easy to understand. There is way more to her than most of us can see. Read on and see what I’m talking about.
Humble
This might seem the most obvious aspect of her. And for good reason. As much as Liliana’s pride is one of her dominating aspects, humility is Nissa’s. In “Homesick” we can see just how humble she is about life in general. When she eats, it isn’t something she takes from granted. It’s a gift for her. Every bite. It’s probably how she stays so thin all the time.
But think about that. What that means. How many of us take our meals as though they are a guarantee? They’re not. They’re a gift. But many of us don’t see it that way. Nissa is humble enough to realize that life is precious and that everything in it is hard earned.
As you’ll read further down, Nissa’s powers are incredible. But we rarely get to see them. We see a little here or a little there. But were she really to use her powers, it would be a force to fear. But she doesn’t need to. She does what has to, but no more. That’s a pretty Green personality aspect she has. Not to use what you don’t need.
But after you’ve read what her powers are, you’ll agree with me. We should be grateful Nissa is such a humble woman. I would pity the fool who would stir her to rage.
Sincere
Deception isn’t in her nature. It’s not a thing she does. She might hide her thoughts and feeling from the rest of the world, to keep them from being bogged down with those things. But she’s honest. She’s sincere. When she does speak, you know she means what she says. If you ask for her opinion you will hear exactly what it is. She doesn’t have schemes or plots like Liliana. She doesn’t want to revel in the leadership of the Gatewatch like Jace. She doesn’t try and impose her views on others, like Gideon. She isn’t along to upset the order, like Chandra. She is there for the life of every plane. To keep other worlds from suffering like Zendikar has. To ensure that people everywhere have the right and the ability to exist according to the natural order. And she means it. That is exactly what she wants to do. That is a kind of sincerity that, if more people had it, could change the world.
(Art by Wesley Burt)
Loving
She hasn’t known the Gatewatch for long. Honestly, she hardly even knows them. But despite that, she tries to care for them. For her, this easier said than done. Nissa refused to leave Chandra when Chandra refused to leave Pashri to die in Baraal’s trap. She could have planeswalked away. But she didn't want that abandonment to be the last thing on Chandra’s mind as she died. So she stayed with her. To make sure that Chandra would die feeling loved. When Chandra was about to cast the ultimate fire spell, Nissa hugged her back to life. Yes, all of these are examples of Nissa’s interactions with Chandra. But that’s because of the next aspect of her life we’re gonna talk about. For now, I can say simply that Nissa has a lot of love to give people. She just needs to feel comfortable giving it first.
Socially Awkward
This is why Nissa only seems to interact with Chandra. Because she’s about as socially awkward as many of us used to be back in high school/middle school/ even today. This is something many of us can relate to, I’m sure. She has no idea how to have casual conversation with anybody. It’s going to be a long time before Nissa learns to be anything other than a force of nature. For so long she was the heart of Zendikar that she ended up isolating herself from people. Now, she has to relearn what that is like. Which is going to be a while from now.
That is why she interacts solely with Chandra. By necessity, Nissa and Chandra had a deep, intimate, personal union with one another when they nearly merged souls with one another to kill Ulamog and Kozilek. All Nissa has ever known are deep intimate relationships like that. Her connection to Ayasha was something so powerful, there were no words needed between them. It was on a spiritual level, almost. When they killed the Titans, Nissa and Chandra touched each other’s souls that way. This is why she can interact with Chandra so well. Almost exclusively, even. She needs a stepping stone to guide her to a normal life as a person, as something other than a force of nature.
It’s going to be a long time before Nissa is capable of comfortable social interaction-assuming she’ll ever be capable of it at all. But I think that’s okay. It gives the audience something to relate to and it’s a core aspect of Nissa’s personality.
(Art by Chris Rahn)
Reserved
Nissa is reserved. She doesn’t like sharing her thoughts and feelings with anyone because she doesn’t know how anymore. Although much of her reservation comes from her social awkwardness, I think a lot of it is just her personality. As mentioned earlier, she doesn’t do things she doesn’t need to. Don’t use that which you don’t need. At least a little bit of there idea can be found here. It’s just been so long that she hasn’t shared herself with anyone, she doesn’t feel like she needs to- that she can- that it’s okay to share.
Fierce
Believe it or not, being fierce and humble are not mutually exclusive. Nissa doesn’t like sharing who she is with anyone for a variety of reasons. She doesn’t like showing off her powers for a variety of reasons too. But don’t let yourself believe she’s gonna roll over and take abuse. We haven't seen her need to, but I can feel this about her. If someone were to start to bully her or her friends, Nissa will stand up and set aside her humility, her reservedness, and she will teach that bully a lesson. I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of her ferocity- because she’s got it. She just knows how to measure it, how to contain it until it’s appropriate to let it go.
(Art by Raymond Swanland)
Solitude Seeker
She likes her space. I know that some of you can understand that. Sometimes, people just need some peace and quiet away from other people-from the world. I know there are days like that for me. This desire for solitude doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. Just that you know when to step away and collect yourself. She doesn’t mind social interaction, even though she sucks at them, but it’s just that she appreciates the solitude of isolation from time to time. Those of us who grew up in a noisy household full of siblings or children. Those of us who grew up in the big city who never got used to it. Those of us with social anxiety who just need a moment away from the crowds. She experiences those feelings that same as we do.
Curious
Nissa wants to see the world see the multiverse. Yes, her oath says that she left Zendikar for the life on every plane. But I believe that she also needed to leave home. She’s shared her soul with Zendikar for so long, she needed to go out and find herself. Separate herself from the force that Zendikar had turned her into. Nissa wants to see the world the multiverse because she’s see so much of her own. It’s a coming of age kind of thing. I am certain many of us can relate to that- to the desire to leave home and find out who we are and what else is waiting out there for us.
(Art by Wesley Burt)
Powers
Niss is SO powerful. It’s kinda scary. Every member of the Gatewatch is scary in their own way, but Nissa is just scary. I’d say as scary as Jace. Who, if you don’t believe me, is very scary. If you don’t believe me, read this. Anyway. Honestly, I’d rather not pick a fight with any of them. If I had to choose, it wouldn’t be Nissa. Let’s find out what makes her so powerful.
Elemental Summoning
We have seen Nissa summon elementals several times. On Zendikar she had the advantage that Zendikar was perfectly willing to share its power. Ayasha itself was a force of nature…literally. But Ayasha wasn’t something she could summon. I digress. We’ve seen her summon enormous elementals in other places. Against the Eldrazi and against Gideon during a practice session to name a few. We’ve seen them be incredibly powerful too. She doesn’t seem to like to summon them very often, so we’ll have to see how much more there is to this ability. As far as we know, elemental summoning is the only kind of summoning we’ve seen her use. Time will tell, I guess.
Rampant Growth
We’ve seen her empower the flora around her to do some awesome things, like holding people in place, building walls, and disassembling automatons to name a few abilities. This will undoubtably bill an invaluable ability further down the road, as much as it is now. On Kaladesh, it serves an even greater purpose, but I have no doubt this power is one that will always come in handy.
(Art by Chris Rahn)
Super Strength
We’ve seen her throw people over her shoulder like a sack of potatoes. She didn’t break a sweat. She didn’t so much as release a small pant of effort. Better yet- we’ve seen her lift a crate full of dozens of gremlins. Ajani himself had trouble believing what he was seeing. Here is the kicker. We’ve seen her stop a Peacewalker midstep. Granted, that time she was using nature magic to enhance her power. But still. Just how strong is she? Like, how hard can she punch if she decided not to use her sword? Could she crush somebody’s neck with her fingers? As far as I can tell, the answer is yes to all of these. Which is scary but really awesome to think about. She could probably use her sword and rip through chain mail! But she doesn’t use these powers very often. And I think it’s because she doesn’t need to. Green, as a mana source, is very much about the natural order and surival of the fittest and peace and self-restraint. You don’t see gorillas flex their muscles or show off unless they’re trying to attract a mate or intimidate another. There is just no need. Make no mistake though, when it comes time to fight, she’ll lay waste to her enemies.
Super Senses
As an elf, Nissa has superhuman senses. Smells, hearing, intuition even etc. It's a useful ability. Mostly because only she and Ajani have these super senses. It’s hard to go into greater detail than this. She’s got super senses. Enough said.
Huntress
With the super senses mentioned above, and her own Tajuru upbringing, Nissa is a very capable hunter. Tracking is a gift that will serve the Gatewatch well. Further down, I tall about her Magic Vision. Between these two, Nissa is a vital part of the Gatewatch. Ajani now has these skills as well. (Is it bothering anyone how much these two overlap? It's almost as though they're setting up to fill a hole or something...)
(Art by Daniel Ljunggren)
Sword Fighting
Despite her super strength, Nissa prefers to use her sword. She’s good with it for sure. Now the Gatewatch has Ajani, Gideon, and Nissa capable of fighting in melee combat. (Why does that idea ring a bell? Video games?) It’s a slender sword, but it’s done well at killint Eldrazi. Her super strength and super senses alone make her skills with her sword far more lethal.
Magic Vision
This is an cool ability for sure. The ability to sense energy. That’s like being able to sense electricity. Imagine the kind of perspective you would have on architecture, infrastructure, power distribution, etc. It would give you an incredible point of view. As we’ve seen on Kaladeshn it’s an ability that’s proved invaluable. Without her magic vision, the Gatewatch wouldn’t be anywhere near where they are now [at the start of Aether Revolt]. While I think it’ll be less vital in the future, I am sure it will continue to be a boon for the Gatewatch.
(Art by Clint Cearley )
Where is Nissa Going
Out of all the Gatewatch articles I’ve written, I had the most trouble with Nissa. Chandra and Liliana were pretty straightforward. Gideon and Jace were, while a little more complicated, not too hard to predict. But Nissa? Not an easy answer.
She left Zendikar for a lot of reasons. Among them, in my opinion, was the desire to find herself and explore the rest of the multiverse. But honestly, I think Nissa’s going home. Someday. Probably not soon either. But it will happen. It’s inevitable. Nissa’s identity is too bound to Zendikar for her to stay gone forever. It may be a few hundred years from now, but eventually Zendikar will call to her again and this time she will go for good. The Gatewatch is a fantastic place for her to be, but it’s a means to an end. To explore and find herself. But Nissa is going home.
What is she going to do there? I think she is going to take Nahiri’s place. Or rather, I think that’s a possibility. For thousands of years Nahiri watched the plane as its guardian. Of the two options I can see her taking, this is one. I don’t think she’ll take it the the same extreme Nahiri did and forsake all life outside of being sentinel. But I could see her assuming that role.
(Art by Wesley Burt)
The other option is that she goes home and settles down. Sharing stories of other worlds. Teaching tolerance and love. Teaching magic and history. She could be the village elder...honestly, I suspect she might become the Zendikari elder. That person anyone can go to for wisdom or advice.
I believe this latter is where she belongs. It’s where she would feel at home, at peace. She would love that job.
As I’ve answered for all the other members of the Gatewatch, do I see her settling down romantically? No. I do not think she will settle down with a romantic partner like the rest of the Gatewatch might. I believe she might experiment around, see what romance and sexuality tastes like, but I do not think that when she finally goes home she will bring anyone with her- or that she’ll care to look for someone. She doesn’t need to. She is her own person without anyone else and she’s happy that way.
