samy + will bonus timeline! ★ ☆
i’ve realized that i haven’t really explained the timeline of samy and will before they get closer in high school + usntdp years so here’s some bullet points of it (also bc i’ve never addressed the hughes growing up in toronto in this au so im gonna do it now lol)
au masterlist
the family moves to toronto a year after samy is born and are there for roughly 10 years (online says anywhere between like 8-11 so i’m choosing 10 as a median lol)
the smith’s visit every summer still or they will visit in boston!
quinn, jack, luke, and samy are all pretty locked into hockey for the first few years of their lives — playing together, competing against one another, playing in leagues, etc.
whenever will visits, he gets right along with them and that’s how will and samy learn most of their skills because of the older boys
it’s especially fun when the smith’s occasionally visit in the winter and will really gets to experience playing hockey in canada during the prime season with them
quinn heads back to the us for the usntdp and jack follows two years later
samy and luke are still in toronto with ellen and jim still playing hockey full time
when it’s luke’s turn for the usntdp, that’s when ellen and jim decide they should move to michigan since 3/4 of their kids are there — quinn’s playing for michigan, jack’s finishing the the usntdp and luke’s just starting
this is when samy begins wanting to try other spots outside of hockey since there isn’t a real women’s pro league and the whole move kind of makes her have a slight identity crisis at like 12
at her new school, her friends are really interested in soccer, so she decides to tryout to hang out with them more
when she makes the team her time gets split between soccer and hockey
obviously she still loves hockey because it’s what her family is built on and it’s in her blood — she’s literally so good at it because of her brothers teaching — but she’s starting to find a love for soccer too
she plays for two years in middle school really falling in love with it and becoming really good — and her parents support her in whatever she decides since that’s how they raised their kids that they don’t have to be bound to hockey if they don’t want to be
she plays up on varsity her freshman year of high school as a 14 year old with the 17 and 18 year olds which starts to prove to her how good she really is
in her sophomore year, she leads her high school team to the state championship and that’s when samy realizes she may have to make a decision when it comes down to it
hockey or soccer? it’s a lot to think about
ultimately, she chooses soccer because of all the opportunities it can bring her compared to hockey even though she makes it clear she will always love hockey and have a place in her heart for it
this brings us up to will moving to plymouth for the usntdp
luke’s finishing his final year there before heading to umich to start collegiate hockey
jack’s finally finding his footing in jersey with the devils
quinn’s moving up in his rankings and making a name for himself back in vancouver
and that brings us to the au timeline right now. i lowkey forgot the hughes family lived in toronto for a good while, so maybe i’ll try to incorporate that more into the au since samy has dual citizenship and considers herself canadian as well as american :)

The promised day begins. Time is nearly up.
Today, Tsumugi's ill-conceived time limit expires. If nobody commits a murder, then Monokuma will have to make good on his threat and violently end this season in the most disappointing and anticlimactic way possible.
Problem is, no one's fucking playing ball. Ryoma has an idea to offer up.
I haven't talked much about Ryoma yet but he's another example of the inherent friction between actors and characters. When we first meet him, he seems like a wacky juxtaposition. He looks fucking eight years old but wears a leather jacket, chain-smokes cigars, and speaks in grim and weary tones about life in prison.
We've all seen anime characters who look way too fucking young for their life history. Ryoma's a fun twist on that. Given the ultimate revelations about V3, he probably is like eight years old, but with 17 or so years of character backstory memory-jacked into his brain.
This juxtaposition makes Ryoma a fascinating character. Right off the bat, he's one of the most interesting characters in V3. He was the Ultimate Tennis Pro (even though he's definitely too smol to even see over the net). But when his family was murdered in a mob hit, he took brutal vengeance, massacring the entire mob with custom-made steel tennis balls that he would bap through their skulls.
(Boy, I hope that wasn't the Kuzuryus.)
Ryoma was discredited from his Ultimate certification and sent to prison on death row. For his part, Ryoma views his life as utterly devoid of value. He has no will to live, and so he chooses here to offer his life up for the others' salvation. They reject his offer, of course, but it's an interesting offer all the same.
Ryoma is fascinating. The kind of character that would be interesting to watch grow and develop through his experiences with the others.
I sure can't wait to see what the future holds for him! It's definitely going to be interesting, right?
...
...right?

Location: The Hotel Date: Friday, September 17 Time: Post-Game (open)
Win or lose, press duty has its purpose. Grant knows that. For the next five years, it's yet another way to distinguish himself as an athlete. To convince pro teams that he's worth the gamble, even as a Fox. That doesn't stop his gritted teeth in front of the press tonight, or the way he returns to the hotel feeling almost more exhausted from the media and their questions than the shitty game tonight.
Of course, he's pissed about the game, too. He'd expected losses, as a Fox. Six to two, though? That hurts—hopefully, it hurts everyone else as much as it does him.
But Grant hadn't expected press duty to feel so much like standing around in Freeport, listening to comments that all had the same meaning in the end—the same undercurrent of aren't you so brave for playing Exy? As if there was any difference between him and the rest of his teammates. As if they knew anything about him, just because they'd heard the gossip or read a newspaper.
What did he expect, though? He's a Fox. On this team, his past is more interesting than his present. Hell, he's got teammates who invite that scrutiny—his roommate tonight being one of them. That would be River's bad idea and thus their problem, except that it spilled over into Grant's life at press duty tonight.
God, he's going to sleep like shit tonight. If Grant's particularly unlucky, he'll wake in the middle of the night from some nightmare. If there's any justice in the universe, River won't notice.
He skips the room for now, then, choosing instead to collapse into one of the chairs in the hotel lobby. Wymack's nowhere to be seen, but he's not the only Fox around. Grant needs to do—something. "So, what. Do we all just sulk around here?"
#grant has replies BUT....i have evidently not posted a starter since nov so here i am trying to fix that#interaction: grant#grant#foxesstart#also keeping this vague since press duty actually isnt uhhh finished or posted LMAO

French voters are waiting to see the full line-up for the second round of parliamentary elections, as scores of candidates stood aside in order to help defeat the far-right National Rally (RN).
Parties have until 18:00 (17:00 BST) Tuesday evening to register contenders for Sunday.
Only then will it be clear how many from the left and centre have abandoned the race in the hope of unifying the anti-RN vote.
Last Sunday’s first round produced a big victory for the party of Marine Le Pen, which - with allies - won around 33% of the vote.
A broad left-wing alliance came second, and President Emmanuel Macron’s centrists third.
But Ms Le Pen’s chances of winning an outright majority in the 577-seat National Assembly have been dented by the blocking tactics of her party’s enemies.
In more than half of constituencies – around 300 – three candidates qualified from the first round of voting (nearly everywhere else it was just two).
If in these constituencies one of the two non-RN runners stands aside, this increases the chances of the RN candidate being defeated.
By midday Tuesday around 200 candidates from the left and centre were understood to have taken the step.
The left-wing New Popular Front (NPF) – which comprises everyone from centre-left social democrats to far-left anti-capitalists – issued instructions to all of its third-placed candidates to step down and let a centrist reap the anti-RN vote.
The NPF is thus helping two senior pro-Macron MPs – former prime minister Elisabeth Borne and Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin – to win in their constituencies in Normandy and the north.
Conversely a pro-Macron candidate has stood down in order to help radical left-winger François Ruffin defeat the RN candidate in the northern city of Amiens.
The RN’s 28 year-old president – and hopeful for prime minister – Jordan Bardella condemned these arrangements as the fruit of an “alliance of dishonour” between parties that until now have been at each other’s throats.
Instructions to candidates from Mr Macron’s centrist bloc have been more ambiguous than the NPF’s.
Though Mr Macron himself and Prime Minister Gabriel Attal have called for “no vote for the RN”, some in his camp believe its far-left component makes the NPF equally unpalatable.
Senior figures like Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire and former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe – both originally from the centre-right – are refusing to issue instructions to vote systematically against the RN.
RN insiders told Le Figaro newspaper that its opponents’ tactics did not bother them.
“On the contrary, it’s good news. The overall message they’re giving out is that it’s the entire system which is against us... It’s another big stitch-up and our voters are tired of it,” one said.
RN leaders have said they will not attempt to form a government unless they are given an outright majority in the parliament in Sunday’s vote.
They say they do not want to be given the appearance of power, if the reality is they cannot pass laws.
However on Tuesday Marine Le Pen qualified this, when she said that a lower majority would be good enough – if it does not fall too far short of the 289 member threshold.
Speaking on French radio she said that winning around 270 deputies would allow her party to open talks with individual MPs from other groups in the hope of persuading them into an accord.
“We are going to say to them: ‘Are you ready to participate with us in a new majority? Are you ready to vote a confidence motion? Are you ready to vote for the budget?’” she said.
She cited as possible targets independent MPs of right and left, and part of the conservative Republicans party which won 10% of the vote on Sunday.
If the RN wins an absolute majority on Sunday, Mr Bardella would be asked by President Macron to form a government – and there would then begin a tense period of “cohabitation” between two political enemies.
Under the French Fifth Republic constitution, power would flow away from Mr Macron to the prime minister’s office because “the government determines and conducts the policy of the nation”.
However Mr Macron would probably seek to retain powers in the areas of foreign policy and defence, which from precedent – and not from the actual wording of the constitution – have remained the preserve of the Elysée in past cohabitations.
Marine Le Pen also accused the president Tuesday of carrying out an “administrative coup d’état” because she had heard he was preparing a number of key appointments in the police and army just days ahead of the vote.
“When you want to counter the results of an election by nominating your people to jobs, and when that stops [the government] from being able to carry out policies which the French people have asked for... I call that an administrative coup d’état."
“I hope it is only rumour,” she added.
#nunyas news#problem with voting against someone instead of for someone#is the people that voted for will continue to vote for#against side will start thinning out quickly

🍁 Thanks so much for the ask! In turn, I ask of you…
17. What highly specific AU do you want to read or write even though you might be the only person to appreciate it?
45. What’s something you’ve improved on since you started writing fic?
Ask Game
I’ll answer the second one first because it’s shorter!
45. In terms of writing I think my narration and prose is stronger. My writing used to have fun bits and pieces, but there wasn’t much connective tissue between actions and dialogue, so the payoff of my ideas wasn’t as impactful because I was filling in too many of the blanks that I should have just trusted readers to do on their own. There were a lot of actions describing emotions or expressions without a lot actually happening in the scene; I had the problem of trying to ‘direct’ the characters as though it were a visual medium instead of just getting to the necessary bits. I’m more judicious with those now and I’ve been able to write some more impactful, concise pieces because of it
NOW
17. My favorite highly specific AU is my MODERN STAR WARS WWF AU!!
Hear me out
One of the problems with translating Star Wars to a modern setting is figuring out how to include the violence and oppression— Fascists still exist and they’re not fun to contend with in a modern setting because they still exist in our world and they’re not fun to contend with in real life. Star Wars should be fun in one way or another, and it’s difficult to make a satisfying modern AU if you just take all of the violence out of the equation entirely
HOWEVER
With a lighter, more humorous wrestling entertainment AU that has kayfabe built into its very nature, you get the freedom of heightened performance and drama and fighting without having to include fascism as the antagonists’ motivations and without having to kill people. You can pick and choose what parts of the story are real life and which parts are the storylines crafted for the characters the performers are portraying in the ring!!
Some highlights below:
Set in the 80s-90s, playing a little fast and loose with the timeline for a lot of stuff, but the main pro wrestling flavor is what came before the Attitude Era, the main story mostly focusing on the OG trilogy up through The Mandalorian, but with some of the Rogue One and Solo movie characters in the mix. There’s also some old first season TBB ideas floating around that aren’t connected to the loose ‘main’ story
This will all be a combination of the wrestling performance storylines like the supposedly deceased brother of the Undertaker who set fire to their childhood home and killed their parents reappearing as an adult to challenge the Undertaker in the ring, combined with some celebrity drama and news stories and public scandals. Fun and dramatic stakes that are still real for the people involved, but without having to deal with what the Imperials actually are and what they represent
Palpatine is the head of the Empire federation à la Vince McMahon, Vader as his (mostly retired) prize fighter and face of the company. The Empire’s been buying out and/or shutting down rival federations, becoming this monopoly in the industry that few people are able to oppose without finding their careers and lives financially ruined
Jango Fett was hired and paid a lot of money to start the primary wrestling school where he trained a lot of the folks in his own community first that the Empire used as the baseline for their roster. He’s bitter about having to retire after an accidental neck injury sustained during a match against Mace Windu, and is also bitter about the clauses in the contract put in place by Palpatine (or I guess Dooku acting on Palpatine’s behalf as his lawyer/accountant) that dictate that anybody who trains in his gym (the rest of the clone characters) aren’t allowed to work for the opposition since Jango was privy to trade secrets that are considered proprietary knowledge of the Empire. Jango’s company is so caught up in extensive legalese that he can’t break the contract or start a new wrestling school anywhere else.
ACCOUNTANT DOOKU
Jango later worked as private security in the latter half of Boba’s childhood, skills and contacts he passed on to Boba. Boba trained as a fighter under his father and has a lot of the same skills and disciplines as Jango but since he’s Jango’s kid and was never enrolled at the gym, he’s technically free from the reach of the Empire’s contract
The Jedi Order in this universe is more of an actual trained martial art, not really professional entertainers. There are still people who leave to go into MMA/UFC style matches, but their training is in actual fighting, not professional wrestling entertainment. Sensei are usually disappointed to see their fighters go into professional wrestling with their skills because they don’t think it’s very dignified, but it’s not like they’re forbidden from doing it or whatever
Jedi like pro wrestlers who DO have either classical wrestling or martial arts training make for better performers and athletes in the wrestling federations because they know how to do the choreography the safest way possible since they have an athletic background and know what will or won’t actually cause their partner long lasting harm in the ring
Wrestling costumes allow for characters to retain some of the flair and armor and heightened stylization of their original costumes. Same with greasepaint and tattoos and elaborate hairstyles
Palpatine retains his Naboo/Coruscanti style though it transitions from blues and purples to black and charcoal gray over the years. Big gold rings and coiffed hair, slick black shoes, a stylish walking cane with the top looking like the hilt of his saber
Don’t even get me started on hot intimidating modern mid-forties Anakin. I don’t even find Hayden Christensen hot personally but the idea I have in mind for how he looks here is so cool. THE GRAVITAS.
COOL WRESTLING NAMES!!
Boba Fett has a couple of nicknames/personas, the later ones being “The Wrath of Tatooine” and “The Wraith of Tatooine” (after he comes back from the dead)
The Sons of Dathomir: Maul and Savage tag team duo, lots of grease paint and kabuki-style masks to keep the Zabrak look
Performances also mean you could easily incorporate the musical motifs of the characters. Enfys Nest is one of the most popular crowd favorites; her theme song is this piece with the vocalizations just after the 30 second mark, her intro into the ring being heralded by drumroll and singing that’s echoed back by the fans in the auditorium. She comes in accompanied by a ton of fog rolling down the platform on her entrance (alluding to the Cloud Riders)
Heck, I could just steal one of the Undertaker’s intros and have her ride down on a motorcycle through the fog. Her costume and color scheme would also translate really well
(Enfys Nest’s finishing move is called The Savareen Standoff. The music comes back in as she stands on the top ropes of one corner, the crowd ramping back up with excitement as she jumps and does a flip in midair before landing on her opponent and getting them pinned)
Carbonite plaque = Casket matches
Speederbike chases end up being motorcycle chases
Not everybody’s a wrestler! C-3PO and R2 are the ringside announcers. I can’t decide whether it’s better if R2 is at the Spanish announcers table, C-3PO translating as well as adding his commentary for the folks watching, or if R2 just gets overly excited while announcing to the point the production team/editors end up having to add the censor beeps over his commentary for how much he swears lol
One of the matches with Anakin ends up breaking out into side beefs with other people in and outside the ring and he can be heard yelling at the announcers, saying “I made you who you are today! You’d be nothing without me!”
Leia’s a safety inspector with a degree in journalism/entertainment law who’s investigating the dangerously unsafe practices the Empire federation has been having their employees take part in in the hopes of shutting them down. She and Bail (an entertainment lawyer) having been trying to get evidence on them for years. Dangerous stunts and gimmicks that have gone too far or ended badly are only a piece of the vast amount of rumors and accusations levied their way (to say nothing of the Fett school and other companies like it under similar impossible-to-escape contracts and NDAs). The Empire has been buying out and shutting down rival federations, becoming this monopoly in the industry; Palpatine has a lot of money and he can afford good lawyers and good press
But also: VERY satisfactory news story of Bail Organa being photographed throwing hands with renown WWF celebrity Anakin Skywalker in the streets for the shady/illegal stuff Anakin has been complicit in that has now put Leia directly in harm’s way lolol. Leia’s adoptive father vs. her real dad. So many juicy responsibilities.
Han Solo is a roadie basically in a steep debt to the Hutt Syndicate, Jabba catching up to him and threatening him into working for him. Jabba works him like a dog for weeks on the road so by the time it comes to RotJ he’s so out of it he’s basically dead on his feet before his friends manage to rescue him. He’s been working 16 hr days nonstop just chugging energy drinks to stay awake— The equivalent of Han knocking Boba into the Sarlacc pit here is him not legitimately not seeing Boba when he puts the tour truck into reverse trying to peal out of the parking lot and he ends up hitting him with the truck
Tbh you really don’t have to change much of his costume. He’s got a tool pack on his belt instead of a holster
Lando’s the head of his own moderately sized federation either in the Windy City or somewhere up in the PNW where it’s cloudy all the time. None of that’s relevant to the wrestling side of things, I just think it gives flavor.
The Cloud City match ends with Han (who audiences know is only part of the tech crew [or is he? 👀]) getting pulled into a casket match as it’s going ‘wrong’ (wrong?) and getting knocked out before Boba carts him off out of the ring. Still debating on how much of this will end up being real and how much is performance, some of that is dependent on how much of the original and prequel trilogies are real
Mask reveals are given the same gravity as they are in canon. Lots of performers aren’t seen outside the ring without their masks when they’re doing a work or a locker room interview. Allows for a lot of characters to just have regular lives outside the ring AND it keeps from breaking kayfabe when people end up traveling together on tour lol
The first time we see the Armorer it’s with Mando going to see her in the workshop where she’s got a welding mask on while she works on the props, costumes, and improvised weapons for the ring
The Mandalorian covert is a small independent wrestling/fighting company/gym. All of them have legitimate training too but work freelance and it’s not uncommon to see them in improvised arenas. Mando’s single and doesn’t have an immediate family and since he’s one of the better-known fighters he’s traveling out of town more often than the rest of them. His carefully crafted contracts and travel arrangements organized by either Karga or the Armorer as his manager allow him to retain some measure of anonymity and he’s never shown his face in the public eye as his wrestling persona, the mask he wears in the ring both a part of the character and actual practical identity protection
Ditching his work with the Guild federation could mean he ends up doing actual cage matches on the side until he’s picked up as a heel by the Empire
Gideon is on the creative team as a writer/manager for the Empire, and though Mando’s been incorporated into the choreographed storylines against other wrestlers, Gideon wants to include Mando’s real kid in some of the future stories, which Mando obviously vetoes.
So maybe there’s a title match between surprise contender Boba Fett and Mando where Gideon literally just decides to go grab the kid from the green room to include as a faked kidnapping plot line at the end of the fight, thinking it’d be okay to improvise because the publicity would be really good, but Mando wasn’t consulted at all beforehand so you can imagine how that plays out
Either Mando or Boba take the Undertaker’s place as the judge of the unofficial wrestler’s court (where arguments and petty squabbles between wrestlers are sorted out with good-natured punishments without having to go to upper management), known for being objectively fair and able to resolve things as a mediator (a stand-in parallel for being Mand’alor)
I have a whole side story for the first season of TBB. Echo used to be a wrestler until a pyro effect went dangerously wrong and he wound up out of commission as a performer (though the Empire at least covered the medical bills and prostheses. They may put their people at risk but they provide good health insurance). Works as the team’s production manager/trainer/technician. Tech’s also had training but he’s more of a roadie/technician/special effects guy too. Wrecker and Hunter are a tag team duo and Crosshair was part of the team for a while before they split from the Empire federation and the lawyers went after them for breaking their contract (because they found out some information they weren’t supposed to know). They’re actually semi on the run in their tour bus trying to figure things out and reach out to others of Fett’s school as they go and oh whoops why do we have a stowaway oh nO WE’VE CROSSED SO MANY STATE LINES, WE ARE SO DEAD—
Crosshair stays with the Empire as a paparazzo/trade spy, investigating whoever the Empire sends him to spy on, but is mainly trying to catch up with the rest of the crew. I figured a long range camera was a good substitute for the rifle. He’s a genuinely good photographer but the Empire pays well and he doesn’t mind doing some dirty work. “Did the Traitors of Kamino KIDNAP a CHILD? More Telling Info On the Messy Corporate Breakup page 11…”
I also have a bunch of ideas for Rogue One and the Mandalorian characters, but this answer is already waaaaay longer than anticipated 😆 Long story short, petty criminal/illegal cage fighter Jyn Erso has been put in contact with her estranged father (Galen stuck working for the Empire under similar NDAs and contracts and possibly even blackmail) who manages to leak insider information regarding the Empire’s increasingly unsafe stunts and demands of the performers and crew to Jyn and the Rogue One crew, who in turn act as investigative reporters and spies for Leia’s mounting legal case.
Bodhi’s a blacklisted ex-crew member and technician who worked on tour for the Empire, sent by Galen to meet up with Saw at his own boxing ring in order to get some pretty damning evidence to Bail Organa. Most of the Rogue One crew are technicians or former employees blacklisted from the federation and most of the industry, or are somehow connected and end up on an impromptu roadtrip happening in the background as the main story starts heating up
Basically making a professional wrestling AU allows for a lot of the heightened drama and fantasy elements to remain in play and for people to be grouped together in ways they are in canon, but there’s a freedom to being able to pick and choose which parts of the canon story are real in this universe and which are parts of the storylines being written for the matches. You still get to see showdowns between characters both in and out of the ring, and you can still have those juicy story reveals given the drama they deserve but without them needing to actually affect the characters in ways that they would if they were actually happening in just regular day-to-day life. You can have the missing twin reveals, the family drama, the betrayals, all of that, and still have it be fun and potentially very funny at the end of the day

Marvel's Injustice.
My pitches for NRS inevitable Marvel game if they go the Injustice route.
Game titles
Marvel:Disassembled
Marvel:Dark Reign
Avengeance:Fall Of Midgard
Story ideas.
Scenario 1. Disassembled. Tony Stark's suit of armor around the world phase goes into complete and full effect. Get the right event to trigger it and I think Tony could be sent into Superman mode where he establishes a regime for the world’s protection. Tony takes full control of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the world by force. Captain America would rise up and lead a band full of heroes who are willing to do what's right and stop Tony Stark and the regime. Final boss fight. We choose between either Cap or Iron Man. If we choose Cap, then we fight Superior Iron Man, if we choose Iron Man, then Cap.

Years later Thor has taken over the entire world as well as Asgard, and rules it with an iron fist. All mutants are forced to register to work for the regime or be depowered permanently and imprisoned. Final boss fight is Odinforce Thor.
Scenario 3. Dark Reign. The Skrull Royal Family, escaping from the Mad Titan Thanos, strikes a deal with Norman Osborne to conquer Earth in a secret invasion. He is able to place his own Dark Avengers as the new Earth's Mightiest Heroes with the aid of Loki's illusions. Loki manipulates Norman to lead a siege of Asgard using advanced Skrull weapons. The Avengers must reunite along with new heroes to topple Osborne and Loki's Dark Reign once and for all. When you start writing a story, there are a ton of decisions you need to make -- what tense you'll write in, what POV you'll choose, and how the narrative voice will interact with the characters and events on the page.
These decisions can be daunting, and they're something a lot of writers struggle with without knowing what's wrong or how to talk about them. In this guide, we go deep into the nitty gritty of perspective, from the pros and cons of different types of POV to the grammar of verb tenses and the magical power of narrative distance to hook a reader.

It occurs to me...
...That some people find I’m Thinking of Ending Things pretentious because the inside of their head is not a relentless series of hypothetical conversations that weave spirals between “philosophical debate,” “showtunes that get stuck in your head,” “painfully embarrassing memories” and “self loathing.”
Cannot relate.

Lessons Learned at My First Book Signing
I attended an in-person author event today for the first time ever. It was not an especially high-profile deal -- just a local author fair hosted by the library. But it was still the first time I'd ever set up a table for the purpose of selling and signing books and interacting with would-be readers, and I want to talk about that experience a little bit and give some take-aways and advice for other writers who might be curious about doing something like this.
Step One: Find an Event
My dear friend and co-conspirator @comicreliefmorlock tipped me off about this. She saw a flier for it at the library and I applied on a whim, not even sure if I'd get accepted for the event. But I did! And that's the first lesson I want to give you: Everything good I have in my life I got by saying, "Fuck it, let's give it a shot."
Don't get too deep in your own head about things. Don't self-reject from opportunities. Kick imposter syndrome in the teeth and just do the thing.
Step Two: Set Up a Table
I was operating on a major shoestring budget for this, and I didn't have time to put together real signage or anything fancy. But I could go to the dollar store for some Halloween flair and a tablecloth and honestly? Even that was eye-catching enough that it definitely lured some people over. Next time I'll be better prepared to do something a bit more cohesive. But even these little touches put me miles beyond most of the other authors there, who just had a small stack of books on a bare table.
A few tips:
Don't put out all your books at once. Leave most of them in the box and tuck it under the table or somewhere. Fewer books, artfully arranged = implied scarcity. And it just looks nicer.
Scatter your business card/swag around the table. Consider leaving out a dish of candy. Freebies lure people into stopping.
Put up a sign with pricing. I used a small whiteboard from the dollar store and doodled on it when I got bored.
Try to have a little flair. Keep it on-brand with the type of stuff you're writing. The goal here is to be eye-catching enough that people want to come see what you've got going on.
Step Three: What You'll Need
If you're going to attend any kind of author fair or signing event, I recommend the following:
Some way to take payment not in cash. If I'd had a Square reader today, I would have probably sold at least a couple more books. Nobody carries cash anymore (but plan to have a bit of change anyway). The sales I made today came through PayPal, and having that QR code sign (free with my business account!) came in clutch.
An assistant. If you can, try to bring someone along to be your helper. It makes a huge difference having somebody who can watch your table while you go network with other sellers, as well as somebody who can help make change and restock the books if you get busy talking to people. And on the flipside, if nobody shows up, your helper can keep you from feeling super lonely and awkward.
Some kind of swag or, at least, a business card. Bookmarks or stickers/bookplates would be baller, too. But you for sure need something with your name and some kind of identifier -- your website, your social media, your Wattpad, something. This is what my business card looks like:

Trans Horror Authors
My January reading challenge is to read a book by a trans author. Luckily, there are many out there to choose from! Here are some who write in the horror genre, because that's my area of expertise. If you know of others, whether in horror or other genres, reply with your recommendations!
In no particular order...
Caitlin R. Kiernan
A genderfluid Irish-American paleontologist who also writes spectacular cosmic horror, what's not to love? They've been repping queerness since the 80s and have a robust library to choose from, so you're bound to find something you'll like!
Poppy Z. Brite
Billy Martin, whose work is published under the name Poppy Z. Brite, was a big name in the Gothic horror scene of the 1990s and continues to be a frequently-recommended author, although he doesn't publish as much horror these days.
Julya Oui
A Malaysian trans woman and prolific short story author. She has several collections out that you can browse, if short stories are your speed! Maybe start with Taiping Tales of Terror, which draws heavily on her native folklore and influences.
Rivers Solomon
A nonbinary, intersex Black author now living in the U.K., Solomon has three books out and they all look spectacular. Their books lean more toward sci-fi/fantasy, but their newest title Sorrowland looks to be pretty solidly Gothic as well.
Gretchen Felker-Martin
Trans woman, film critic, and unapologetically outspoken. Her best-known book is Manhunt, a post-apocalyptic horror tale that doesn't pull any punches. She's got another new release slated for 2024 to keep an eye on.
Hailey Piper
One of the most prolific authors I can name off the top of my head, Hailey also has several novellas out in the world + a few novels. If the intersection of queer fiction, body horror, and cosmic horror sounds like your thing, you can find something in her backlist. Also she's here on tumblr, go learn more at @haileypiperfights
Eve Harms
A bit of a new player on the field, but well worth checking out. Eve is a Jewish trans woman. Her debut novel, Transmuted, is a breathless body horror romp. She also makes a bunch of handmade zines, which I just think are neat :)
Natalie Ironside
One of Tumblr's very own better-known names, Natalie is queer, disabled, trans, hilarious, and author to at least three novels I can think of plus some other stuff too - go scope her out on @natalieironside for the details.
.....I know I'm missing a ton of people but these were the first ones that came to mind. I have to get back to writing, but I hope this inspires y'all to pick up a book you haven't read yet, and to add to my list down in the notes.
Happy reading, y'all :)

Pro Tip: The Way You End a Sentence Matters
Here is a quick and dirty writing tip that will strengthen your writing.
In English, the word at the end of a sentence carries more weight or emphasis than the rest of the sentence. You can use that to your advantage in modifying tone.
Consider:
In the end, what you said didn't matter.
It didn't matter what you said in the end.
In the end, it didn't matter what you said.
Do you pick up the subtle differences in meaning between these three sentences?
The first one feels a little angry, doesn't it? And the third one feels a little softer? There's a gulf of meaning between "what you said didn't matter" (it's not important!) and "it didn't matter what you said" (the end result would've never changed).
Let's try it again:
When her mother died, she couldn't even cry.
She couldn't even cry when her mother died.
That first example seems to kind of side with her, right? Whereas the second example seems to hold a little bit of judgment or accusation? The first phrase kind of seems to suggest that she was so sad she couldn't cry, whereas the second kind of seems to suggest that she's not sad and that's the problem.
The effect is super subtle and very hard to put into words, but you'll feel it when you're reading something. Changing up the order of your sentences to shift the focus can have a huge effect on tone even when the exact same words are used.
In linguistics, this is referred to as "end focus," and it's a nightmare for ESL students because it's so subtle and hard to explain. But a lot goes into it, and it's a tool worth keeping in your pocket if you're a creative writer or someone otherwise trying to create a specific effect with your words :)

I think there is some Meta that can be taken from 180 Degree Longitute Passes Through Us, an extrapolation of the very personal story of In and Wang.
There is a certian trauma for us Queers of a certain age who had to grow up and live our lives and make choices based on scripts written for us by deeply homophobic societies. Now, in a world that has changed so drastically but that still clings to the vestiges of its homophobia it feels like we have to confront those choices, the things we did to just survive.
Some of us didn't survive (Siam), and some of us made choices that hurt those around us (In). And some chose to remain blind and cling to harmful institutions that leave us stunted (Mol).
Wang's anger at these systems feels so righteous and powerful, as does his absolution. He represents the generation that comes after the shackles have been loosened, as the healing can now begin and we can connect to the parts of ourselves we may have hidden from for decades out of grief and shame and fear.

Livewatch Thoughts: Kei x Yaku
Episode 1
This show is doing exactly what I need it to do right off the bat (thank you @dangermousie but also why did I let you tempt me into a live airing show with only one episode out!?!??)
First off we start with sickly sweet couply nonsense and then devolve right into the **MurDer**
Con, right off the bat is yes, we are gonna fridge a girl to get some man angst and motivation. Its going to be the premise of the show. Perfectly fine if that isn’t your thing (it’s an annoyance in my book) so warning in advance - and the fridging is violent and shown pretty early on and repeatedly.
Pro is that the character work going on is exquisite. Shiro is a young Yakuza boss shown in bed with another man. Everything about him screams danger and he weilds a sultry sexuality like a weapon, always calculating. Ichiro is an undercover cop tasked with getting close to him - but also desperate to solve the case of the missing girl - his mentor on the force.
The air between the two positively crackles with intensity and it is so. very. very. gay.

My #1 post of 2022
The bagel and the googly eye are two major symbols of this film. Not only is it a surprisingly apt and humorous take on yin and yang, but in the same stroke it explores concepts central to Buddhist philosophy. To boil down more than 2,000 years of Buddhist discourse – it is thought that all things exist only through our perception of said things. Therefore, they are without inherent meaning. They’re empty.
...
Through the googly-eyed lens, we gain the power to control our infinite emptiness. Waymond (Ke Huy Quan), the dorky husband of Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh), reminds her through simple kindness that there is value where you want to create it and meaning where you choose to see it. In Buddhist thought, it’s our compassion that grounds us – makes us human – and emptiness isn’t the mark of nihilism and despair but an opportunity to leave behind the bad and cherish the good.

I saw this reblogged by @uiolot and got inspired. Since I'm not posting much, I decided I'd answer some questions for main characters, C and Joy. WARNING VERY LONG
✨ — For Joy, I wanted it to express his upbeat demeanor, so I just googled synonyms for happiness, went through some, and it popped up in my head. Though I recently found out it's commonly used as a female name lol. It also became his mother's trait to give her children weird names with special meanings. As for C, I scrolled some male names to find one that sounded like him and shortened to one letter for ✨mystery✨.
🌼 — Joy is 16 and C is 17! Could never tell you what happened the day
🌺 — They have each other! Aside from that, C had his first “relationship” a few years ago with a toxic guy (though can you realistically not be toxic as a ~12-13 boy?), a blond cocky bastard. It kinda grew as a reference to me choosing between several looks for C. At first I wanted him to be blond, with curly hair; his ex got the 1st, Joy's human design got the 2nd. Joy also had a few crushes, even including Haru, but it never went anywhere (and thanks god, I never intended to, this man is way too old for him xd).
🍕 — Joy is probably burger with fries typa guy. Anything flavorful and colorful would be to his taste, but he's not too picky since his mom's cooking was always awful. C definitely likes meat and bread of any kind. They share love for sandwiches, soda, hard candy and pastry, especially buns from Snowdin when C tries them.
💼 — They're both high-schoolers, so nothing yet. C used to work in his father's butchery shop before the Underground, but it was less of "making a living" and more of a "one day you'll inherit my business dear son so I'm training you instead of letting you enjoy weekends properly".
🎹 — Joy travels around the Underground and draws a map of it. He sometimes watches Haru's family anime collection, reads adventure novels, listens to pop music, dances, and plays mortal combat-ish games. He also just... likes to yap. A lot. Anything to tire himself out really. C never had any hobbies because of being busy, so he just sticks around. Adventuring and exploring in general is interesting to him. They'd probably like DnD if they knew about it.
🎯 — Joy yaps and dances like a pro, hehe. C has the MC ability to solve any problem on the way. He's mostly collected, sharp, and is able to get out of most situations if time's given.
🥊 — Joy loves chatting, finding time to meet friends, seeing his elder brother a lot! His hobbies name it all. He only hates household chores, especially doing dishes, anything related to water (he can't swim) and being Haru's target during his training sessions. C likes working with people, reading books, but feels uneasy spending time with monsters except Joy. As to why... We'll see. I can't really come up with anything he'd purely hate... Like, cleaning toilets, not that's what everyone hates. Following other's orders and tasks maybe?
❤️ — Joy's best memories before the main story are related to his elder brother, Piper. They barely meet each other these days, which makes it double special. They're close since childhood, talk about everything that bothers them, watch silly movies... They can even just sleep in the same room and be happy. C's happiest memories are probably about the family farm, when he was little, played with piggies (under guidance, we all know how scary pigs can be) and didn't know where meat comes from. Since meeting Joy, the cutest moments they had were definitely added to both's lists.
✂️ — This topic is secret until the episodes come out, but let's just say they're also related to the couple's relationships. Besides, both struggle with parents a lot. Joy has arguments with mom, C hates dad, perfect match.
🧊 — Joy's is, though at first I pictured him wearing glasses on the forehead for more adventurous look, but it doesn't make sense when you're half-blind lol. His jeans were slightly different in fit. C, aside from early choices I mentioned, had changes in boots (before they were just generic boots) and pants (same... I have troubles with pants) and was gifted a lil garter belt cover for his weapons. I also got inspired by Hunter from TOH and Vaggie from HH — strong protective characters with trauma 😊 — and gave him a hooked nose.
🍀 — Joy was at least 70% self-insert. So I can say he's inspired by my own awkwardness? Also my desire to yap and the idea of comforting teen relationship. A tiny bit of any sunshine character I've seen in media (Charlie in HH, Tails in Sonic franchise, Luz in TOH, etc etc...). C is pretty generic, I admit. Insert him in any 1st person/unnamed protagonist game. Frisk heritage right here. But in looks he's heavily inspired by Manlybadasshero 'cause he's the true protagonist of every story.
🌂 — Joy is Disney channel series or teen dramedy. C is rpgmaker yandere game or PS1 horror with a sprinkle of slice of life when he's on the pacifist route.
💚 — They're both cisgender boys and gay! (Probably would be trans-inclusive, but not familiar with the concept enough to identify as such).
🙌🏻 — C is the only child. Joy has seven!
🍎 — As I mentioned, Joy quarrels with his mother a lot. He doesn't feel needed, and in his eyes, mom suddenly stopped loving him when he was little and only needs him for doing dishes from time to time. His dad is simply absent. Still technically in the family, but always stuck in his workplace, also since Joy's childhood, barely seeing his kids a few times a year. No conflict with him, but not much love either, it's neutral. C's in very bad relationship with father due to the amount of work and it's violent nature. And he's just old in general. «These damn kids» guy. As for his mommy, I'm sure they're fine. I imagine a very patient, warm woman he was sorry to leave like that.
🧠 — I love Joy's cheerful, yet awkward personality. He helps me cope, especially with my situations at home, school stuff and sexuality topics. He doesn't know anything, he's a baby!! 🥺 (he's actually a nice smart guy, as mature as an introverted 16 yo can be). As for C, he's just my ancient Undertale protagonist idea I still cherish. Also a secret for later, but... He's the “I fucked up — I fucked up more trying to improve the last fuck up — I learned and did it better from scratch” trope. He has a lot of skeletons in his closet he still thinks about and grieves over. He may turn VERY flawed at some point. And I love bad people who are truly sorry in the end.
✏️ — Not too often, but I like sketching them and writing the detailed script for episodes when I have time. Also the whole project! It will come out eventually, we all say in unison.
💎 — Definitely not Joy, he's staying. C... Who knows. He's also important, probably not. But I swear I wouldn't about every OC I've ever had before one day deciding they're not fit for my grown brain anymore and getting rid of them. So we'll see.
💀 — Not phobias, but fears in general. Joy is very much afraid of death. It's a taboo topic for most people, and in his family it's not spoken about along with many other things. Seeing someone dying or hearing about it (only including fresh cases) might be straight up traumatizing for him. They're both afraid of being left alone, for C it also means losing Joy as the story progresses.
🍩 — Lora! The new queen of the Underground. She's the main antagonist in the whole AU. There are temporary enemies too, especially for C. You'll learn more on the process.
🎓 — For a year and few months. Such a long journey, hehe.
🍥 — I was 16! It always feels weird to outgrow your characters. I'm almost afraid of losing touch, heheh.
Maybe I'll participate again with other characters I have. That's fun to ponder certain things about you children, especially while they're in development.

Types of Solar Panels for Home Use: Monocrystalline vs. Polycrystalline vs. Thin-Film
Solar energy is becoming an increasingly popular choice for homeowners looking to reduce their energy bills, lower their carbon footprint, and make a sustainable investment. The right solar system for your house can provide a significant return on investment, but selecting the right type of solar panel is key to maximizing efficiency and savings. When considering solar panels for your house, it's essential to understand the differences between the three main types: Monocrystalline, Polycrystalline, and Thin-Film panels. Each type offers distinct advantages and drawbacks, depending on factors such as efficiency, cost, aesthetics, and the space available.
This blog will provide an in-depth comparison of the three main types of solar panels used in residential solar systems, helping you choose the best option for your needs.
1. Monocrystalline Solar Panels
Monocrystalline solar panels are often recognized by their uniform black appearance and are considered the premium option for solar systems. They are made from a single, pure silicon crystal, which gives them higher efficiency and better performance in a range of conditions.
How They Work
The manufacturing process for monocrystalline panels involves growing a single crystal of silicon and slicing it into wafers. This high-purity silicon structure allows electrons to move more freely, increasing the panel's efficiency in converting sunlight into electricity.
Advantages of Monocrystalline Panels
High Efficiency: Monocrystalline panels are the most efficient of the three types, with efficiency ratings typically ranging between 17% and 22%. This means they can generate more power in a smaller amount of space, making them ideal for homes with limited roof space.
Better Performance in Low Light: These panels are more efficient in low-light conditions, such as cloudy weather or shaded areas, meaning they can produce more electricity during overcast days.
Long Lifespan: Monocrystalline solar panels typically come with long warranties (up to 25 years), and they have a proven track record of durability and performance over time.
Aesthetics: The sleek black look of monocrystalline panels is often considered more visually appealing, especially for homeowners concerned about the aesthetics of solar panels on their roof.
Disadvantages of Monocrystalline Panels
Higher Cost: Because of their high efficiency and the complex manufacturing process involved, monocrystalline panels are generally the most expensive type of solar panels for a house. However, the higher upfront cost is often offset by better long-term energy savings.
Material Waste: The process of cutting silicon into wafers produces more waste compared to the manufacturing process for polycrystalline panels.
Best for:
Homeowners with limited roof space who need the most efficient solar panels available.
People looking for an aesthetically pleasing solar system for their house.
Those willing to invest more upfront for higher long-term returns on energy savings.
2. Polycrystalline Solar Panels
Polycrystalline solar panels, also known as multicrystalline panels, are made from silicon fragments rather than a single crystal. This gives them a more distinctive blueish hue and a lower cost, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious homeowners.
How They Work
Polycrystalline panels are created by melting several silicon crystals together, which results in a panel with lower silicon purity. While this reduces the efficiency compared to monocrystalline panels, polycrystalline panels still offer reliable performance and are widely used in residential solar systems.
Advantages of Polycrystalline Panels
Lower Cost: Polycrystalline solar panels are generally more affordable than monocrystalline panels, making them a great option for homeowners looking to install a solar system for their house on a budget.
Less Waste in Manufacturing: The process of producing polycrystalline panels generates less waste than monocrystalline panel production, which can be considered more eco-friendly.
Reliable Performance: While slightly less efficient, polycrystalline panels still offer good performance in most climates and conditions.
Disadvantages of Polycrystalline Panels
Lower Efficiency: Polycrystalline panels typically have an efficiency rating between 15% and 17%, which means they require more space to produce the same amount of energy as monocrystalline panels. For homes with limited roof space, this could be a drawback.
Less Aesthetic Appeal: The blueish color and less uniform appearance of polycrystalline panels may be considered less attractive compared to monocrystalline panels, especially for homeowners who prioritize aesthetics.
Slightly Lower Performance in High Temperatures: Polycrystalline panels tend to perform slightly worse in high heat compared to monocrystalline panels, though the difference is often negligible.
Best for:
Homeowners looking for a cost-effective solar system for their house without needing the highest efficiency.
Those with ample roof space who can afford to install larger panels to compensate for the lower efficiency.
Families seeking a balance between affordability and energy production.
3. Thin-Film Solar Panels
Thin-film solar panels are a completely different technology compared to monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels. Rather than using silicon wafers, thin-film panels are made by layering photovoltaic materials (such as cadmium telluride or amorphous silicon) onto a substrate like glass, plastic, or metal.
How They Work
Thin-film panels are produced by depositing thin layers of the photovoltaic material onto a surface, resulting in a lightweight and flexible solar panel. This flexibility allows for more creative applications, such as integration into building materials or curved surfaces.
Advantages of Thin-Film Panels
Flexible and Lightweight: Thin-film panels are much lighter and more flexible than traditional silicon-based panels, making them easier to install in certain applications and potentially more aesthetically integrated into the design of a house.
Lower Cost: Thin-film panels are typically cheaper to produce than silicon-based panels, which can translate into lower upfront costs for homeowners.
Better Performance in High Heat: Thin-film panels tend to perform better in high temperatures compared to silicon-based panels, making them a good choice for hot climates.
Disadvantages of Thin-Film Panels
Lower Efficiency: Thin-film solar panels have the lowest efficiency of the three types, typically between 10% and 12%. This means they require significantly more space to produce the same amount of energy as monocrystalline or polycrystalline panels, which can be a challenge for residential installations with limited roof space.
Shorter Lifespan: Thin-film panels generally have shorter warranties and lifespans compared to crystalline silicon panels, meaning they may need to be replaced more frequently.
Less Common for Residential Use: While thin-film technology is excellent for certain commercial applications or non-traditional installations, it’s less commonly used for standard residential solar systems.
Best for:
Homeowners in hot climates where thin-film panels’ heat tolerance can be an advantage.
Those with large roof space or non-traditional installation areas (such as curved surfaces).
Homeowners looking for lightweight, flexible solar panels for specific architectural needs.
Conclusion: Choosing the Right Solar Panels for Your House
When selecting solar panels for your house, the decision ultimately comes down to balancing your needs, budget, and available space. Monocrystalline panels are ideal for those seeking maximum efficiency and a sleek design, though they come at a higher cost. Polycrystalline panels offer a more affordable alternative while still providing reliable energy production, making them a great middle-ground option. Lastly, Thin-Film panels are best suited for specialized applications or large spaces where flexibility and heat tolerance are essential.
Installing the right solar system for your house can be a significant investment, but with the right choice of panels, it can pay off through energy savings, increased property value, and environmental benefits. As solar technology continues to evolve, homeowners have more options than ever to make their homes energy-efficient and sustainable.
