“Pran” the person who connect themselves​ with nature. They learn to grow​up, to survive and stay with the nature by using their knowledge, proficiency, comprehension and sympathy. Moreover, indigenous give precedence to the rules culture of nature. For pran, forest is home. They look floor as a soil, wall as a rock, roof as a canopy, animals and trees are their neighbor.

So, in this project I will design the architecture to observe wildlife in the extremely short distance by using the waste from lab studios (my interest). It will be located around the swamp saltlick which is a place that animals come to find the nutrient. That's why this architecture was called Phrang (พราง)​ which means camouflage.

The site that I gonna use in this project is in the Khao Luang national park at Nakorn Si Thammarat, South of Thailand. We start walking from Ai Khaio waterfall, Nhan Ra Fah, Nein Lom Fon, Huay Num Yen and finished at the Wang Lung waterfall.

The site is located near the Nein Lom Fon camp day 2 called swamp saltlick which located at the elevation around 1446 meter from sea level.

From the research, I got the information that this is the area that surrounded by granite mountain that has been scoured because of the climate condition like rainfall all the year or breakdown from something.

Documentary Phase (Research)

Swamp saltlick is two words that I combine it together to represent the site area.

Saltlick or Mineral lick (in Thai called โป่ง) is a place where animals can go to lick essential mineral nutrients from a deposit of salts. Saltlick is the community for herbivores and carnivores. It can be also a place for an ambush. So, in other words, saltlick is the most energy flow area that has the interaction of the majority of animals in the forest and makes the biological balance in the ecosystem.

If we separate saltlick following the topography, it can distribute to be 3 types. First is the area that is not too much sloping. In this area, the mineral is absorbed through the soil and amass in the underground. So, we can call it Salt Earth or Dry lick. Second, the breaking point of creeks. There is the area that water current brings minerals and amass it in long term. Last, a pond or valley area. Most are the lowest point in that zone.

Swamp (in Thai called พรุ) is an area that came from the effect of an edaphic factor. The land-form is like a puddle that has organic soil amass in the underground such as leaf debris and humus. The ground be like a sponge, it makes us feel sway and quake when step on it.

This shows animal activities -​ which is saltlick, and shows the type of forest -​ which is a swamp. So, here will call Swamp Saltlick. Moreover, Here is the source of rivers and waterfalls because that’s raining all year. This area is surrounded by mountains. When fog and cloud come, air pressure from the pit will absorb it and change it to rain clouds. That's how the water moves in the rain forest from ground to the sky … It creates a water circulation system like a machine for making rainy clouds. And we know this in the name of Evergreen forest.

As a soil feature is a mud, it’s hard for big trees to survive. The plants in swamp saltlick need to improve themselves and evolve to survive.

So, trees have to change their root system to link with the forest environment. For example, improve to be a buttress that grows out from the tree trunk, which help to support the tree and keep the mineral. Build prop roots to support the plant body. Or breathing root that sticks up out of the soil to breath and ventilates.

But mostly, around the center area of swamp saltlick is shrub and ground cover such as grass. All of these plants can grow in a swamp. They have a short taproot but the lateral root will expand, wrap together and hold with the peat soil. However, by the extreme climate, all of the existing plants are chosen by natural selection.

So, I separated animals that come to use the swamp saltlick into three types which is herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores. And study the behaviors of them to adapt to my design such as study a sense of herbivores, how they live, how they survive and camouflage from the hunter. And also study skills of carnivores how they camouflage themselves to hunt.

From my personal interest, I will use waste materials from lab studio. Material that I choose is EPS foam that does not decompose. Because the existing rate of the composition in the area is very high which mean that if we use the biodegradable material, the architecture will decompose overtime. Therefore, my choice of material that does not decompose will lengthen the lifespan of this architecture.

Design Idea #1 and Add More Research

This area came from a rock of mountain around was broke into small pieces and pile up slowly from the bottom. Organic material, including dead plants and animals, falls and amass on the mud. Then, when water flows in, plants make the nutrient-rich soil to form a fen.

From the research, soil in swamp forest is in the type of Histosols soil which is come from erosion and gather all the minerals into the soil. Histosols soil must form on the close lowland area which is continually saturated with water for the long term. There are 2 types of Histosols soil that we can found in Thailand, Kab Dang Soil (Kd) and Narathiwat Soil (Nw).

Form the picture, here is the information about Kab Dang Soil. The soil is very bad in water to absorb and drain the water system. We can found this soil in the forest of Nakorn Si Thammarat and Narathiwas.

And the important thing is the thickness of the soil in this area is just around 40-150 cm. From the surface. The order of the soil is Oe-Oi-Cg which is the fiber before rubbing, fiber after rubbing and mountain rock respectively.

From my last sketch idea that i thought about the entrance under the soil and use a spot in the big bush to observe the wildlife. However, the dept of the soils is smaller than expected with only 1.5 meter deep and the next layer is the rock bad.Therefore, we need to use the method off rock drilling with the hard machine instead of hand digging.The ground of the tunnel is 5.5 meter below the topsoil level with the height of 2.5 meter, above that there still will be another 1.5 meter of the rock bed and 1.5 meter of topsoil level for weight support.

In the process of drilling the tunnel, there are two strategies. The first one is which I called the network strategy where it includes two circular circulations below ground level that are connected with smaller tunnel. The hidden observation route are located behind the big bushes in order to observe the animal without being noticed.

However, the possible effect caused by this strategy is the sudden change of ecological system in the area where there is a change of the rock bed will crack lead to underground flooding.

This prediction will change the geography of the location hence the ecology system as well.

From the previous concern, the second strategy is designed to sustain the ecological system in the area where there are multiple entrances that lead to the nearby bushes.

From my last sketch idea that i thought about the entrance under the soil and use a spot in the big bush to observe the wildlife.

So, I use EPS foam to raise up the center if the bush including root and soil to prevent it from dying. May be make a hold for ventilate the air and can see through the material and root come to camouflage the architecture.

In the eye of normal people, these material might seem to be unfriendly to the environment. But if we use it for the correct purpose, it is one of the most potential material with plentiful resources left in our world.
