Optimizing Performance: A Comprehensive Guide to Compressor Simulation in Fluid Dynamics
Compressors play a vital role in a wide range of industries, from HVAC systems and automotive applications to aerospace and manufacturing. Their efficiency and reliability are crucial for the systems they serve. To ensure optimal performance, engineers turn to compressor simulation in fluid dynamics, a powerful tool that allows for the detailed analysis and optimization of compressor designs. This blog provides a comprehensive overview of compressor simulation, focusing on how it can improve performance, enhance reliability, and lead to better product designs.
What is Compressor Simulation?
Compressor simulation is the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to model the behavior of air or gas within a compressor. CFD simulations enable engineers to visualize and analyze the flow patterns, pressure distribution, and thermal effects within the compressor. These simulations help predict how the compressor will perform under various operating conditions, ensuring the design meets the necessary performance criteria.
By simulating real-world conditions in a virtual environment, engineers can make informed decisions about the geometry, materials, and control strategies for the compressor, leading to improved efficiency and reduced energy consumption.
Key Benefits of Compressor Simulation
1. Performance Optimization
One of the primary goals of compressor simulation is to optimize performance. Through CFD, engineers can evaluate how different designs and operating conditions affect compressor efficiency. For example, they can analyze the impact of blade geometry, flow paths, and inlet/outlet configurations on pressure ratios, flow rates, and power consumption. By identifying areas of inefficiency, they can make adjustments to improve overall compressor performance.
2. Reduced Development Costs
Traditionally, designing compressors involved extensive trial-and-error testing with physical prototypes, which can be both time-consuming and expensive. CFD simulations significantly reduce the need for physical testing by providing accurate predictions of compressor behavior in a virtual environment. This leads to shorter development cycles, lower testing costs, and faster time-to-market for new products.
3. Enhanced Reliability and Durability
Another advantage of compressor simulation is the ability to predict wear and failure points within the system. By simulating the effects of heat transfer, vibration, and pressure fluctuations, engineers can identify potential areas of fatigue and design solutions to extend the compressor's operational life. This ensures higher reliability and reduces the likelihood of costly breakdowns and maintenance.
4. Customization for Specific Applications
Compressors are used in a variety of industries, each with its own specific requirements. Compressor simulation allows for the customization of designs to meet the unique demands of different applications. Whether it’s optimizing a compressor for maximum airflow in a large HVAC system or designing a compact, high-efficiency compressor for automotive use, CFD simulations provide valuable insights that help engineers tailor the design to its intended application.
CFD Tools for Compressor Simulation
Several CFD software options are available for compressor simulation, each offering different features and capabilities. Some popular tools include:
ANSYS Fluent: Known for its advanced turbulence models and ability to simulate complex flows, ANSYS Fluent is widely used in compressor design for its accuracy and versatility.
Siemens STAR-CCM+: This software excels in multidisciplinary simulations, allowing engineers to analyze fluid dynamics alongside structural and thermal performance.
Altair AcuSolve: A robust solver that offers fast and accurate results for high-fidelity simulations, AcuSolve is ideal for detailed compressor analysis.
Key Parameters in Compressor Simulation
When simulating a compressor, several key parameters must be considered:
Pressure Ratios: Simulating the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet is critical for determining the compressor’s efficiency.
Flow Rate: Analyzing how different flow rates affect performance can help engineers optimize the compressor for specific operating conditions.
Thermal Effects: Heat generated within the compressor can impact its efficiency and longevity, making thermal analysis a crucial part of any simulation.
Turbulence and Vortices: These flow patterns can lead to inefficiencies and energy loss, making it essential to simulate and mitigate their effects.
Conclusion
Compressor simulation is a valuable tool for optimizing performance, reducing development costs, and enhancing the reliability of compressors. By leveraging CFD technology, engineers can gain deeper insights into fluid behavior, make data-driven design decisions, and customize compressors to meet the needs of diverse industries. Whether you’re designing a new compressor or improving an existing one, CFD simulation is the key to achieving superior performance and efficiency.

Chicago P.D's Men as Your Older Brother
Wordcount: 1547. 230-290 each.
Reader's age and gender are not specified. The timelines may give a hint about the age differences, though.
Kevin Atwater
Raising 3 siblings was definitely not in Kevin's life plan. He has always been a good brother, but there's a huge difference between a brother and a father. Despite his insecurities, he did a good job. Kevin raised you, Vinessa, and Jordan with all the love in the world. Food, clothes, toys, birthday parties, doctor appointments, school work, he did it all. And he would do it again and again if it meant seeing you and your siblings growing up happy and healthy. When your father came back from prison, it took a toll on all of you. While Kevin tried to deal with his own unresolved feelings about your dad, you had a weird feeling growing in your chest.
“Who is this man? He is not my father, at least I don't feel like he is,” you told Kevin one afternoon after he mentioned your father wanted to meet. Kevin and Vinessa agreed with you, not really knowing how to feel towards the man.
“You raised us, Kev,” you said, looking into his eyes. “We never called you dad because you've always been Kev, our big brother. But you've been a dad to us all along.”
Later that night, you all got to an agreement: to give your father a chance. But he would never be number one. Ever. Kevin is and always going to be number one in your hearts.
Jay Halstead
It's no surprise to anyone that being a Halstead comes with a package: a talent for trouble and two very, extremely, unnecessarily protective older brothers. Jay and Will made sure everyone knew not to mess with you or things would get ugly really fast. Kids at school knew you had a cop and a doctor as your brothers, and you knew that was the reason no one ever laid a finger on you. This whole protective thing goes both ways, though. Jay will never forget the day you got home from a party with a busted lip. The reason? Apparently, to defend him.
What?” the look of disbelief on his face was priceless. If this wasn't a serious conversation, you would be laughing your ass off. “Defending me? What do you mean?”
“We were talking, and suddenly the conversation shifted to police. This guy started shit-talking that all cops were dirty and did nothing for the city. Never in a million years could I stand there and say nothing!” you said in exasperation. “I told them how my brother saves lives every day and how much you and your team sacrifice for this city.”
Jay just stood there. His fingers came to rest on the bridge of his nose. Damn, he couldn't say he wasn't proud, but at the same time…
“Kid, that's nice and all, but would you mind not getting into fights on my behalf ever again? Jesus!”
Antonio Dawson
The Dawson siblings… your parents had no idea they would have to deal with 3 souls that feared absolutely nothing. Being the youngest definitely helped you feel even bolder. Having Antonio and Gabby protect you from everything and everyone made you feel like the safest person on earth. Growing up is never easy, but being a Dawson prepared you for a lot. With Gabby being in CFD and Antonio in CPD, your parents wondered if you would follow your sibling's footsteps. When the moment came to choose your profession, they were worried that would be the case. You, however, have no idea where your passion lies.
“You don't have to be so worried about this, kid,” Antonio said from his spot on the couch.
“How can I not, Tonio?”
“Come here, sit down,” he said, patting the spot beside him. You went and sat beside him. “It's perfectly normal to feel lost about all this. It's not an easy decision. “
“It was easy for you and Gabby. You always knew what you wanted to do.”
“That means nothing. Do you think we never had doubts? That we didn't struggle?” Antonio held your face in his hands. “You have our support. Always. It doesn't matter what you choose to do.”
“He's right,” Gabby said, having arrived in the room just now. “We love you, and we're going to help you find your way.”
Hank Voight
Losing a parent is something that can change someone’s entire life. You and Hank had to deal with the loss of your dad when you were both too young to even understand why he died. You and Hank were really different, but you both shared the wish to become police. To protect the city like your father did. Being the oldest, Hank became a mentor to you. He was there for you in every step of your career, being your biggest supporter. Being police somehow strengthened your bond and you guys grew closer as the years went by. You could be yourself without any fear with him, and he felt the same. When your brother lost the love of his life, his wife Camille, you were the only person he would open up to.
“I don’t know what to do,” Hank stared at you for the first time that evening. He’s been avoiding you since the funeral that morning. You knew he was scared to pour out his emotions, afraid he wouldn’t be able to keep going if he let himself feel all that pain.
“I’m here, Hank,” you held his hands that rested on the table.
“Do you remember how you felt when dad died?” Hank asked you.
“What? No… We were so young.”
“Exactly. I don’t remember hurting his much, you know?”
You felt your eyes fill with tears at his words. You got up and embraced him in a hug, hoping to pass him some comfort. “We’re going to be okay, brother. I got you.”
Adam Ruzek
As surprising as it may sound, having an older brother who never leaves you alone and is devoted to annoy you is not that bad. You were a really introverted kid, and for years Adam was your only friend. You were still a baby when your parents divorced. This made things even more complicated between them, but Adam has always been there for you. He held your hand when you walked for the first time. He taught you how to ride a bike and how to play football. Your dad always watched you two with fondness in his eyes. The three of you were pretty close. Bob was not perfect, but he tried his best. He knew that Adam felt like he had to protect you from everything, but sometimes that went too far.
“Adam, for the last time, tell me where the hell are they!” Bob was starting to lose his patience.
“Dad, I told you I don’t know.”
“You’re 20, for god's sake! You should stop covering for them.”
Adam choose to stay silent this time. They’ve been at it for 30 minutes now, and he already used all his excuses.
“Fine, you want me to go to the police station? I can find them and cause a scene, sending police cars to wherever they are!”
Adam’s eyes widened at this, he knew it was a lost battle now. He told your dad about the party you went to, already feeling sorry for all the scolding you’d get the next days. Later that night, Adam apologized for not being able to hold your dad longer.
You looked at him with a big smile on your face, “It’s okay, Adam. Do you wanna know how my date went?”
Dante Torres
Life could be hard. Too damn hard. You and Dante knew that very well. From a young age, both of you had to learn how to survive in a world where kids like you two were constantly thrown under the bus. Being a foreigner in the US was hard enough, but also being poor and living with an abusive stepfather made things worse. Dante had to grow up faster than usual. He had to become someone that you and your mother could rely on, even though he was way too young for any of this. Juvie. Gangs. You never lost hope that Dante would leave that life, find a good job, and be happy. The day he got into the academy was one of the happiest days of your life. Seeing him later in Intelligence made you so damn proud.
“I can't believe they're giving you a permanent spot!” you were jumping into his arms before he could cross the threshold.
“You saw my message?” Dante said with a smile, hugging you back.
“Of course I did! You got the job, I'm so proud of you!”
“Where's mom?” Dante asked, stepping back from the hug and closing the door. You could tell he was a little overwhelmed with the news himself.
“She will be back soon. We have a surprise for you,” you said nonchalantly.
“What? You guys didn't have to give me anything.”
“Don't worry, bald head,” you used the nickname he hated so much. “We want to treat you, for everything you did for us.”
You approached him again and held his hand, “We love you, and we're so proud.”
“I love you guys too.” Dante smiled down at you. “But never call me bald head again.”
“Okay, bald head.”
Please accept this post as my apology for being MIA… I had this idea the other day so I decided to write it.
I’m aware that Adam has a sister that was mentioned in the show, but I don’t remember much about her, so that’s why she wasn’t mentioned. The same goes for his mother. For the others, I tried to include their parents and siblings as much as I could.
Chapter 4 of Upstead Foster Daughter is half written because I want it to be longer than the others, but inspiration hasn't hit me in a while.
Thank you again for all the love on my fics. It means a lot to me seeing all the likes and reblogs ♡

Alright! Yall said, "Let it rip so you know the drill! Grab yourself a little snacky snack & let's unpack this shit.
I find it funny how people are trying to misconstrue the problem that we have with the way Pascal is acting & treating Stella. No one has said Stella was right in the manner in which she approached him in episode 1. Hell Kelly called her out on it & Stella herself admitted it. My issue lies in the fact that regardless of episode 1, it appears that Pascal has given his other LTs a level of grace & understanding that he is not giving Stella. So I genuinely want to know why. And if episode 1 is his why, then it goes back to what I said preseason about Stella's mistakes (minor compared to those of others, her husband included) following her. Stella being held to different standards & expectations than her male peers.
If episode 1 is not his reason then I'm left to assume & those assumptions lead me to facts that are rooted in systemic misogyny, racism & sexism.
1. Stella is the only female WOC LT at Firehouse 51.
2. Stella is a younger LT compared to what the CFD is accustomed to seeing per the chief comments in 9x03
2a. Also let's keep in mind the conversation she had with Carver in 11x01. When Stella came home she told Kelly that when she told Carver she got support from DC Hill & his response was "that makes sense" as if she was incapable of earning the shit on her own accord or merrit but implying Stella got a leg up because she was a WOC. Are we forgetting how Stella even met DC Hill? DC Hill came to 51 looking for the FIREFIGHTER that got control of the rig & prevented an accident with civilians. That firefighter was Stella Freaking Kidd.
3. Maybe Pascal thinks less of Stella because she's married/dated a coworker. He could have the same perception that "she slept her way to top"that was expressed in 9x03.
Some observations that I'd like to consider as we unpack his behavior.
1. Pascal brought up turnover on truck yet didn't have the wherewithal to look at the files of the firefighters who transferred out? We've seen that every time someone transfers out, there's a transfer slip that has to be completed. He would have seen Mason & Gallo didn't get transferred to another house within the CFD. He would have saw that they literally are in different STATES still firefighting. I honestly don't know what Gibsons would have said but it would have shown that only one of her FFs that was under her command is no longer on the job.
2. Why was Pascal so QUICK to believe Damon's (White male) word & opinion of Stella over Stella's request to put him back in the floater pool? Stella has been at 51 as a firefighter & LT LONGER than Damon has been a fucking firefighter! So you mean to tell me you're about to strip a LT who has received the firefighter award for valor based off the word of a firefighter who came to 51 as a floater & per Kelly in 13x04 relatively fresh out the academy!? Yall see how insane that sounds right?
3. The only reason Pascal changed his tune on Stella in 13x03 was after Mouch brought him her files/records. So my next question is, why did it take another white male to help sway him? I'm not saying he had to take Stella's word outright but it's the fact that he absolutely SHUT her down & redirected the blame back on her & her "lack of leadership" without investigating the facts. He claims to be all about rules & protocols yet failed to effectively do his research on the situation prior to going to Mouch & asking if he'd be ready to take the LT exam if he needed him...? Huuuuuuh?? I love Mouch, but someone point me to the major save or rescue he did this season so far to "prove himself" to Pascal.... oh wait, he hasn't had one, but you know who has... more on that later.
4. So after Mouch literally saves the night because he himself felt it necessary to go to this man's house off shift at night to bring him her records. Pascal does the right thing & tells Stella to make sure the next replacement on 81 sticks. So what does Stella do!? Does she drag her feet? Does she ignore his orders? Nope she gets right on it. She knew who she wanted but was STILL vetting other candidates because she wanted to make the best informed decision. Yet Pascal was at her neck again saying she was overthinking it. It had been 2-3 shifts MAX. It seems like Stella is showcasing leadership skills that Pascal should be because good leaders don't make important decisions lightly or without all the facts. They research they do their homework they vet out the low hanging fruit to ensure the best decision is made for the betterment of the house.
5. Hermann overheard Pascal & out of HIS mouth, he said Pascal had Stella so stressed out that if she didn't find a replacement for truck, he'd have her bugles. So again, that's not us making the shit up it's quite literally implied in the dialogue that clearly people are picking up the energy & animosity Pascal has towards her. So again, I'm asking where the professionalism is, or is Stella the only one required to be professional?
6. So now I want to talk about Kelly & Pascals interaction in 13x05. It honestly felt like Pascal said that shit to Kelly to see if Kelly would react. We watched Pascal go to LT Vales house & physically assault him for a conversation Vale had with Monica... so clearly he's very protective of his wife so why would he think Kelly would be the person to call Stella an asshole to? That shit was so uncalled for & CHILDISH because if Kelly had punched him in the fucking stomach then what?
At the end of the day before Kelly is Stella's husband he is her peer when they are on shift so again why are you talking shit about one of your direct reports to another direct report?
It sort of felt like a powerplay because Pascal has already brought up to Kelly about him & Stella working together & that he'd be keeping an eye on them. Then he goes & makes that comment knowing that Kelly probably won't respond to it out of fear that he'll throw them being married in his face again if he defends her.
So what we're not about to do is try to normalize or justify Pascals behavior based on the argument that "Stella shouldn't have mouthed off or challenged him." Because honestly, we've seen Kelly & Casey go head to head with Boden & other chiefs, commissioners, etc. when they felt passionately about something (right, wrong, indifferent, they've done it). Not saying what Stella did was right or absolving her from accountability but we're not about to act like she yelled at him & told him to go fuck off! She should've handled herself differently but she shouldn't have to continue to bear the brunt of his twisted ass power plays or whatever the hell he's power tripping on.
He doesn't have to like her & as far as I'm concerned she doesn't have to like him but hell bare minimum he needs to start acting like Battalion Chief with 20+ years on the job versus a petty ass manchild who's mad the girl on the playground embarrassed him in front of his friends.
And I don't want to hear about "Stella hasn't been challenged or Boden let her get away with blah blah or Boden didnt make her "prove" herself & that maybe if she "proves" herself he'll give her a break.
Hard stop, NO! Kelly hasn't had to prove himself. Hermann hasn't had to prove himself. So WHY TF would Stella have to "prove" herself to this man? Like i mentioned before, the playing field needs to be fair across the board for all of them. If anything, Stella has proven herself because she's the one who pulled Damon out of that collapsed sign. She's the one who saw Ritter laying there & still gave clear, concise direction to her truck company (instead of getting all emotional like they think women are going to act in times of crisis 🙄) She took the case in 13x05 & ran with it. Kelly was with her in one scene investigating those crashes. After that, Stella was the one making house calls & following up. Yet at the end of the episode, they had Kelly debriefing the chief on the outcome of the case & not Stella... WHY? At minimum, Stella should have been there & they could have used it as a moment to have them move forward. Instead, they used it as a way to have him add fuel to the fire with that backhanded compliment laced in disrespect by saying she's a pain in the ass & i don't know why!?
Do i think Pascal is a racist, misogynistic, sexist POS sent to uphold the CREEKY views of the CFD? Idk 🤷♀️ but what i do know is if it walks, if it talks if it looks then it just might fit. Because there's a clear distinction in how he has handled Stella over the last 4 episodes versus everyone else. & if he's none of those things & he's still just hurt over being challenged by her in episode 1, then I say this with care, but it's time to build a bridge & get over it because I'm tired.
So, in conclusion..... Dom Pascal
When you're referring to anyone at 51 but especially Stella Kidd. 😌

When we fall | Part 1
Warnings (for all parts): Fluff, angst!!, description of injuries, blood, violence, use of guns, mentions of death, probably unaccurate policing/medicine
Summary: You moved to Chicago to start a new life. Working as a doctor alongside your brother Connor you make new friends and although you swore to yourself not to let any man in your life at least for a while, your promises fail when you lock eyes with a handsome stranger in a bar.
Words: 6k
Pairing: Jay Halstead x Doctor!Rhodes!reader
A/N: I just started watching Chicago PD (I'm on season 3 now) after I've been watching Fire and Med for years now. I just can't stand Voight so I only began watching for Jay and Burzek! And I am so in love with Jay. Please, this man is perfect. Just look at that handsome face!!
This is going to be a 3 part series I wrote on a whim. Originally I only planned on writing one scene, but then I figured it needed a backstory so this happened...
I have to say I am really proud how it turned out. I was just in such a flow when I wrote it that the story basically wrote itsself. I hope you enjoy and that the characters feel true to themselves :)
You had only began working at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center a few months ago, hesitant to work alongside your brother but knowing it was an opportunity, which would be stupid not to take.
Having moved to Chicago recently to be close with your brother after a messy break-up, you were still adjusting to your new life.
It was why you were more than relieved when you got along well with your co-workers, especially Natalie and her boyfriend Will.
They were understanding of your situation, were never bothered to show you where to find something at the hospital and made you feel welcome from the beginning as they invited you in on their group plans and joked like you were old friends.
Although you still felt a little uncertain at times to work with your brother, who had made himself a name as a brilliant trauma and cardiothoracic surgeon, he had been supportive since your decision to leave your old town behind and start a new life in Chicago.
Maybe, you thought, coming here had been exactly what you needed. A fresh start, a new beginning with new friends and no men to mess with your heart. At least for now.
“I told you I have sworn off men”, you sighed, shaking your head in amusement at Natalie’s try to play matchmaker. “They’re trouble. I don’t need that in my life right now.”
“Hey!” Will send you a look, though you knew he wasn’t mad. “She’s not wrong though”, April stated and Ethan next to her grinned. “I mean it though”, you said directed at Natalie. “I just want to focus on myself right now. My job. No dating for now.”
Everyone at the table nodded and you relaxed, glad you had found these people, who respected and supported you. “Cheers to that!” April raised her glass and you did the same when you noticed yours was empty.
With a groan you pushed yourself out of your seat and up, gesturing towards the bar. “I’m going to get another drink. Anyone want something?” They all shook their heads, already moving onto another topic.
As you made your way over to the counter you studied the people around you, trying to determine who was a cop, a firefighter and who a regular. Right in the beginning the others had introduced you to Mollys, claiming it was Chicago’s bar where first responders spend their time after shift.
Figuring it might come in handy to memorize some faces you let your gaze drift over the sea of people, recognizing a few men that Connor had once told you worked at the CFD. They were laughing loudly, beers in hand as they seemed to be talking enthusiastically about something.
At the table next to theirs your gaze came to a hold, your eyes caught by a man you had never seen before but looked slightly familiar. Your brows furrowed as you rummaged in your head for something that connected you to him, but you couldn’t find anything.
The people who sat with him didn’t look familiar either, consisting of men and one woman with chestnut hair. Your eyes drifted back to the man, who had caught your attention, his brown hair styled neatly and his hands wrapped around a bottle of beer that he just raised to his lips.
You didn’t meant to stare, but you were mesmerized, torn between trying to determine why he looked so familiar and captured by his effortless handsomeness.
He wore a green shirt, making you think his eyes were the same shade, although it was hard to know with the distance between you.
He seemed relaxed, leant back in his seat but listening to the others conversation attentively. Having sensed someone’s eyes on him he suddenly looked up, his eyes searching the room for a split second before they fell onto you.
Your face heat up as a blush crept up your cheeks, knowing you had missed your chance to turn away. The man raised his brows slightly, in confusion just as much as amusement it seemed, before he lightly lifted his bottle, as if he was saying cheers.
You clutched your glass a little tighter, glad that it had been refilled in the time you had spent gawking at him, and copied the movement, an unstable smile on your lips. Then you turned away, meeting Stella’s gaze from the other side of the bar.
The two of you had met when she had been at the hospital for smoke inhaling a while ago and you had clicked almost instantly, connected by your determination to hold your own in a field still dominated by men. And by your past with toxic relationships as you found out later.
“What was that?”, she asked, a teasing grin tugging at the corner of her lips as her eyes flickered between you and the man behind you. A part of you wanted to ask if he was still watching you, the other longed to forget it had ever happened.
“I don’t know.” You let out a dramatic sigh. “Can we just forget it ever happened?”
Stella’s face lit up, her curls dancing around her face as she shook her head. “Yeah, you wish. But that was definitely something.”
You exhaled, pinching your nose. “Thank you for the drink.” You saw Stella open her mouth in protest at your ignoration of her words, but before she could say anything else you send her an apologetical smile and hurried off.
No one seemed to have noticed your encounter and you slipped into the booth with ease, trying hard not to steal another glance at the unknown man a few tables away.
No men, you reminded yourself. Right now you needed to focus on getting your life together, not getting your heart broken by a handsome stranger.
-
“Dr. (Y/l/n)?” “Yeah?”, your head shot up from where you had filled out paper work. Because Connor and you were only half-sibling, you didn’t share the same last name, something you had been more than glad over when stepping foot in this hospital for the first time.
No one knew where you came from and that you shared genes with the successful Dr. Rhodes and you had left it at that at first, wanting to make your own impression first before dropping the information.
You could still remember their shocked faces, the questions, but most of all the excitement as they asked what Connor had been like growing up. If you had any embarrassing stories to tell or photos to show.
You didn’t, keeping them to yourself for now, because you hadn’t come here to make fun of your brother. He had been your rock through your breakup and your move here, something you were so grateful for you feared you would never be able to show him just how much.
“We have someone hit bit a bullet waiting in the three.” Your eyes widened. “Why didn’t they come with an ambulance?”, you asked, grabbing your iPad along the way.
Maggie waved off your comment, chuckling. “Cops. You know how they are.”
Actually, you didn’t. Coming from a small town you had no experience with shootings and gangs and many of the other trauma causes that were common here in Chicago. It was why you had been so excited about your job offer at the hospital.
Although you were still adjusting to the changes of living in a city and there were downsides you hadn’t considered before, you liked it. It felt so different, giving you the sense that in this city everything could be possible.
So many options and so many possibilities, as if you could completely reinvent yourself. It was thrilling, making you wonder how you had ever lived without the adrenaline rush of stepping into a busy ER.
Quickly scanning the information on your tablet you pulled open the curtain, clamping the iPad under your arm as you disinfected your hands.
“Hi, I’m doctor (y/l/n) and you are?” You glanced up, startled as you met the eyes of a familiar stranger. The man in front of you grinned, seemingly better at covering up his surprise. “Shouldn’t it say my name on your tablet?”
He didn’t sound rude, only a little sarcastic and perhaps even teasing. You gulped, trying to recompose yourself. “Right. I just prefer getting to know my patients myself than just relying on numbers and letters.”
You didn’t see his reaction when you grabbed your iPad again, glancing down at it. “So your name is Jay Hal-” “Halstead”, he finished for you and you looked up at him again.
It made sense now, why he had seemed so familiar to you nights ago at Mollys. “You’re Will’s brother.” The man in front of you, Jay, as you knew now, raised a brow. “Have you considered becoming a detective?”
He was mocking you, again, and you were tempted to smack him with your iPad. “So-”, he paused, letting his eyes drift over you. You felt your body tense under his gaze, cop’s eyes, and stood a little straighter.
“You were watching me at Mollys.”
You pressed your lips into a thin line, biting your tongue. You could only hope the embarrassment that began to sink in didn’t show.
“I was not watching you”, you stated and he raised a brow, daring you to explain yourself. “I just thought you looked familiar, but I couldn’t figure out why. Now it makes sense.”
You turned halfway towards the door, gesturing to the halls where somewhere his brother was treating another patient.
“I don’t think that’s the whole truth.”
You almost gasped at the confidence in his voice, instead blowing out a breath. “It definitely was.”
He shook his head, smiling. “I don’t buy it.”
There were many things you wanted to say to him, but you swallowed them, knowing it was no use. He clearly enjoyed teasing you, so you wouldn’t give him more fuel.
Instead you let out a sigh, shifting into professionality. “So, Mr. Halstead”, you began. “Jay is fine.” You tried not to let his interruption let you lose your string again and nodded. “Jay, you’re here for a bullet wound on your left upper arm?”
Jay nodded, his eyes- they really were green- bright. Pulling on your gloves you decided it was time to reclaim your own position a little. “And you decided to just walk in here instead of coming with an ambulance? Seems a little reckless, don’t you think?”
He raised one brow at your question. “It’s just a graze. I wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for my boss.” He rolled his eyes, making you wonder what his boss was like.
“Seems like your boss is a lot smarter than you”, you muttered, but to your surprise Jay grinned. “You’re new here, right? At least I’ve never seen you here before. Do you always talk to patients like that?”
You shrugged, unbothered by his words as you stepped close to him to take a look at his arm. You didn’t know what had gotten into you to talk to him like that, but you had the feeling with him it was fine. That he could take it, perhaps even enjoyed it over your dry professionalism.
“Only to the ones I like best”, you said with sarcasm in your voice, too focused on inspecting his wound to check his expression.
Jay didn’t move under your touch, allowing you to move his arm before you let it go again. He had done this before, probably multiple times. It was why he was so unbothered, perhaps even annoyed to waste his time here on something that seemed unsignificant to him.
For a moment you were tempted to ask him how he could choose a job that demanded such sacrifice, but you didn’t know him and you doubted he would give you an honest answer. Not that you could blame him. You were practically strangers.
And was your job much different? Although you had never been hurt and doubted it would ever happen, you were still making countless of sacrifices for it. Taking on extra shifts, working through the nights, staying longer to take more time for your patients and putting their health over your own sometimes.
“It’s just a graze shot”, you said when you were done inspecting the wound, ignoring his look that seemed to say “told you”.
“But you still need to be careful with it. Give it rest, avoid any rapid movements, don’t lift too heavy with it…I think you know.”
Jay nodded, watching you remove your gloves. “Does that happen often?” He tilted his head in question and you bit your lip. “I mean, you- getting shot on the job.”
“Are you asking if I come here often?” His lips were curled into a lopsided grin, looking way too handsome on his features. You rolled your eyes at his teasing, ignoring the way your heart beat a little faster in your chest. “Forget it”, you stated, throwing your gloves into the bin.
“I am going to tell one of the residents to come and bandage the wound. Then you’re free to go.”
But before you could move the curtain again and leave the room you heard Jay’s voice behind you. “Wait.”
You paused, turning back to him slowly. For the first time he wore a serious expression, his jaw twitching.
“I’m with the Intelligence”, he stated, in a way that told you the name should ring a bell. It didn’t. You were too new to know much about it.
Jay seemed to sense it by your lack of a reaction to his words. “We’re…very involved in the City.”
Whatever that meant. You tilted your head in question. “You mean with the gangs?”
Jay shifted. “Voight, my boss, he can be very- intense.”
You nodded slowly, taking in his guarded expression. It was a topic you wouldn’t pry at. “And you’re okay with it? I mean- you’re just so…casual about this.”
You bit your lip, hesitant to ask him but curious as well. The cops in your home town had barely ever used their weapon to the point you sometimes even doubted they were able to.
Jay shrugged nonchalantly. “Before I worked for the CPD I was in the army. I’ve been through a lot worse than a graze. Getting shot at is just another part of my job.”
A veteran.
In such a short amount of time Jay had revealed so much to you. Suddenly you had a lot more respect for the man in front of you and you wondered if that was his way of coping, covering up his battle wounds and scars with sarcasm and wit.
You swallowed, trying to find words. But none seemed fitting. “Sounds like I will be seeing you here often then.” You kept your voice emotionless, although the thought of seeing Jay regularly made your heart speed up a little. Of course you would prefer different circumstances.
Damn his handsome face and wit.
He grinned slightly, shifting the atmosphere back to something lighter. “Don’t get too excited. I prefer staying bullet free.” “As you should.”
Typing something into your iPad you gave Jay a final nod. “Stay safe out there.” Then you turned to the door, already halfway out when you heard his voice again.
“I don’t even know your name.”
You froze, smiling to yourself when you tried not to put too much weight into the fact that he had called you back a second time. It seemed almost as if he didn’t want you to leave just yet.
But you pushed the thought aside, knowing it was pointless. You couldn’t let yourself get distracted so easily.
Turning back to him you put on a polite smile.
“You’re a detective, figure it out.”
You were surprised by your own confidence, but with Jay you didn’t feel shy or insecure. He made you feel like you could say anything and he wouldn’t mind. The type of man that didn’t get upset easily, so comfortable with who he was that it took a lot to get him to lose his temper.
“I could just ask my brother, you know.”
You shrugged, unimpressed. “If that lets you sleep at night, sure.”
You left the room smiling to yourself and it took you another few minutes to calm your rapid heart and collect yourself.
-
“You didn’t tell me you have a brother!” “What?” Will looked up from the computer, startled by the way you had barged into the break room.
Your shift was over and you couldn’t wait to get home and relax on the couch, but before that you needed to talk to Will. Because after encountering the other Halstead your mind hadn’t been able to let go of what had happened between the two of you. The way he had looked at you, teased you. How he had made you feel nervous and confident in just a matter of moments.
“Why didn’t you tell me you have a brother?” You leaned on the desk, sure that you had Will’s full attention now. “You didn’t tell us you had a brother the first few weeks either.”
“That’s different.” You shook your head. “And I did tell you. So…?”
Will leaned back in his chair, stretching his back. “I didn’t think it mattered. I would have introduced you eventually but- wait, is Jay here?”
You bit your tongue, feeling a little caught. You hadn’t thought that maybe Jay didn’t want his brother to know what had happened. But it was too late now, and anyway, how should you have known?“
"He was. He is fine though.” You kept your words vague, aware that you weren’t allowed to share personal information with Will. Even if they were brothers.
Will let out a sigh. “That idiot. Probably got himself in trouble again.” He reached for his phone across the desk and you quickly got up, straightening.
“You didn’t get it from me”, you threw in before Will could drag you into it and he looked up at you with curiosity in his eyes. “I wasn’t going to mention you.”
“Oh.” You nodded, feeling relieved yet a little flustered. Will studied you with attentive eyes, reminding you of his brother for a second before his expression shifted into suspicion.
“So you met Jay.” He said it in a way that proposed something meaningful behind his words, but you couldn’t figure out why. “I did.” You shifted your weight to the balls of your feet before swaying forward again. A nervous habit. “I bet he’s the younger one.”
“He is, yeah.”
You suppressed a grin. It made so much sense. “So I should probably head home now. I got the early shift tomorrow.”
“Right.” Will nodded, the phone in his hands seemingly forgotten as his eyes were still fixed on you. “Did something happen between you and my brother?”
Your heart sank a little. Were you really so obvious? “I told you I’ve sworn off men. And your brother is- annoying.”
You wished the last part didn’t sound like it came straight from a five year old’s mouth, but it was too late to take back.
“Trust me, I know that.” Will let out a sigh, but you could see the fondness in his eyes. The gesture alone told you they had a close relationship.
A cop and a doctor. What a pair.
“Well, I’ll see you tomorrow. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
-
Weeks had passed since you had last seen Jay. He hadn’t shown up in the hospital again, which you were both glad for and disappointed at, and since you had been taking on extra shifts for a sick co-worker, you had spent almost all your time at the hospital or passed out in your bed.
“You haven’t gone out with us in weeks!” Sylvie was currently trying to convince you to come to Mollys. You had gotten to know her through Stella and the two of you had gotten along well, her sweet and kind nature something that made you feel comfortable around her instantly.
Although you had quickly learned not to underestimate the girl. She was working with a bunch of guys after all and had learned to stand her ground with them.
Sylvie could be very persistent, you realized again when she had called you to invite you to a girl’s night out. “Stella won’t be working today, so it’s our chance to spend the night as just us girls.”
You gnawed your lip, thinking. You were tired, craving your couch and tv more than going out again, but Sylvie wasn’t wrong, you had been mostly on your own the past days. Being a little social and getting out of your own apartment would probably be good.
“Urgh, fine”, you groaned. “But you’re paying my first drink.” You knew Sylvie was smiling triumphantly on the other end of the line. “Deal.” “Now get your ass over here!” It was Stella’s voice in the background and you chuckled. “You are the worst!”
“And you love us anyway”, she chirped and you hung up, shaking your head with a smile on your face.
You hadn’t thought about impressing anyone when getting ready, but you were more than glad you had put a little effort into your outfit and make-up when you stepped into Molly’s that night, your getup like a wall build around you.
“You came!” Stella crossed the room, her voice loud enough for a couple of heads to turn towards you. You could kill her for drawing attention to you, but you forced a smile onto your lips instead, trying not to look at anyone except her.
“Hey”, you muttered, shrugging out of your coat and hugging her. “Wow, girl you look stunning!” Stella’s eyes flashed up and down your body as she let go, a smirk on her face.
“A little quieter, please?”, you almost whispered, aware that you still had the attention of the people around you. Stella seemed either completely oblivious to it all or unbothered, because she grinned at you. “Looking like that you will draw attention to you whether you like it or not!”
You felt your cheeks heat up a little, glad when you spied Sylvie making her way over. “I told her not to make a scene, but she wouldn’t listen. You know how she is!”
You hugged her too, smiling as Stella let out a breath. “I did not make a scene. And I’m standing right here, you know?”
Laughing, the three of you made your way to the back, where you slipped into a booth, your drink already waiting for you. “You know me so well”, you told Stella as you took your first sip, relaxing a little now that the attention had mostly vanished.
“I got you, girl!” Stella winked at you, before launching into a story about their newest rescue. Soon you were enveloped in laughter and smiles, the stress of the last days forgotten for the night.
Only when Stella declared it was time for another round of drinks you felt the exhaustion return to your body. “I think I’m going to head home”, you told them, stretching a little in your seat. “Early shift tomorrow?”, Sylvie asked and you nodded.
“You’re way too selfless, taking on all these extra shifts”, Stella pointed out, but you waved her off. “I’m the new one, so it’s fine. Helps me get to know everyone and everything better and it’s not like I have much to do in this city yet. I only got my gym membership, but I didn’t really have time to look for anything else.”
“See? That’s exactly why you need time off! You should be out exploring the city!” You smiled at Stella’s enthusiasm. “It’s not like it won’t be here tomorrow. I’m planning on staying here, so there’s plenty of time to get to know it all.”
Sylvie offered you a smile. “I’m glad you do. I know it can be quite an adjustment to move to a big city like Chicago, but it will feel like your home in no time.”
You felt your heart squeeze painfully in your chest as you thought back to the past months, which had been filled with nothing but heartbreak, loss and a turmoil of emotions. Even as you had decided to start a new life in Chicago, you had been filled with fear and uncertainty, scared to make the wrong call yet again.
Never could you have imagined to find a job, that was so challenging, but gave you a sense of purpose and a group of friends, that felt like you had met them long ago.
“It already kind of does”, you admitted, your eyes fixed on the empty glass in front of you before you looked up at them again. They both looked at you with big smiles on their faces and you almost felt tears fill your eyes. It had been a long day.
“We should do this more often”, you told them as you got up and grabbed your coat. “That’s what I said!” Stella nodded.
“And I still need to show you that spinning class. You would love it!” Sylvie sounded so excited that you couldn’t help but chuckle. “I am sure. Just text me and we’ll find something.”
“And you’re sure you can’t stay longer?”
Your eyes drifted to the counter as you considered staying for another drink, but your body felt heavy and almost sore from the day’s work. “Next time. But you two have fun and don’t drink too much”, you winked at them.
As you excited the bar you waved towards a few familiar faces before pulling your coat closer around your body to prepare yourself for Chicago’s cold.
Still you shivered as you stepped outside, pulling out your phone to order an Uber. Something you had only done once before, on your way here, but was an easy and quick way of getting around the city.
It would take a few minutes for your driver to arrive and you realized it would have been a lot smarter to wait inside, but you hadn’t thought of it then and you felt too proud to step inside again.
Pressing your hands together you rubbed them against each other a few times to create heat, before slinging your arms around your torso. Chicago’s harsh winters wasn’t something you hadn’t gotten used to yet, but the promise of snow lingering in the air made it almost worth it.
You heard the faint sound of the door opening and closing behind you so you took a step to the side of the building, not wanting to stand in the way of whoever had just left the bar.
To your surprise the person came to stand beside you, his presence alarming you until you glanced up to find none other than Jay Halstead standing next to you.
Immediately your body relaxed again, as if it knew by instinct his presence meant safety. “That was quite an entrance”, he greeted you, referring to the moment you had stepped into Molly’s.
You felt your cheeks flush at the memory, hoping he couldn’t see it in the dim light of the streetlamp. “I didn’t know you were here.” You kept your eyes trained at the empty street in front of you, willing and dreading the moment your driver came to pick you up.
“I was with the unit”, he said and you turned your head towards him. “Are you here often?” He shrugged, his eyes darting to the building. “I guess so, yeah. It’s the place where everyone comes.”
You nodded silently, contemplating his words. “But if I want to be alone, I go to the bar at the corner North Milwaukee Avenue.” You met his eyes curiously. Was he making recommendations, because you were new in the city or did he have another intention?
“So bars and hospitals. Everywhere else I can expect to run into Jay Halstead?” You didn’t know why you asked, but a part of you wanted to know. Wanted to know more about him, what his life was like, what made him who he was.
Jay grinned faintly. “You make it sound like I’ve got issues.” “Do you? Have issues?” You were teasing and he smirked. “Doesn’t everyone?”
“I don’t think I have.” Even as you said it you knew your words couldn’t be farer from the truth. Hadn’t your issues been what had led you here?
Jay watched you for a moment, seemingly picking up on your change of mood, but sensing you weren’t ready to talk about it. You appreciated it, welcoming the silence to sort your thoughts again.
“So what led you here to Chicago?” His question was innocent and something you had been asked countless of times since your move here, but for some reason you felt the urge to be open with him. No lies or excuses.
And even if Jay barely knew you, you thought he would be able to pick up on it. He must be an excellent detective.
“There were some…things I needed to leave behind.” It was vague, but more than you had told most who had asked. Only the girls knew about your breakup, but even with them you hadn’t shared many details.
Jay didn’t ask further, his grave expression suggesting he understood you better than you might have thought. “Why Chicago?” You glanced away from him, taking in the empty road, the skyline with its lights in the background. “I needed a fresh start, somewhere where no one knew who I am. And I got family here, so it made sense.”
You could feel his eyes on you and you swallowed before facing him again. For a moment your eyes locked, none of you saying anything as you started at each other. Jay was the first one to break the heavy atmosphere, a smile dancing at his lips.
“But you’re not a criminal on the run, are you? Because I would have to arrest you, if you were.” The tension that had risen in your body at the mention of your past vanished and you grinned, relieved about his ability to lighten the atmosphere. “What gave it away?”
Jay leaned a little closer, his eyes glistening. “Maybe the way you always look over your shoulder-” You inhaled. Was that really something you did? “-or that you’re nervous around me, a cop.”
The air you had held escaped you in a surprised sound and you hugged your torso a little tighter. “I’m not nervous around you”, you huffed, shaking your head. Jay grinned.
“How is your arm by the way?” You weren’t interested in talking about yourself any longer, shifting the topic onto him. Your gazes travelled down his arm where his jacket was covering the wound you had inspected. It seemed like forever ago and like yesterday at once.
“It’s good. Voight’s keeping me at a leash, make sure I’m 100% before I get into the field again.” He said it like it wasn’t a big deal, but you could hear the strain in his voice. He missed it, being out there on the streets.
“Sounds reasonable to me.” “Yeah.” Jay nodded, a faraway look in his eyes. It seemed like you weren’t the only one with secrets.
You looked up at the sound of a car nearing, a black car approaching the two of you. Checking your phone you held it up. “That’s my ride.”
But you only managed one step towards it before Jay pulled you back, his hand wrapped around your lower arm. You gazed at it, confused and startled by his reaction and he loosened his grip, his hand falling to his side after a moment.
“You know the guy?”, he asked, pointing to the man that was sitting behind the wheel, an impatient expression on his face.
Slowly you shook your head, your eyes flickering between the car and Jay. “But he’s my ride. See-” you held up your phone to him, but Jay paid it little attention.
“Yeah, no, you’re not climbing into that car”, he stated, his voice firm but not unfriendly. “Wait, what?”
Surprised you watched Jay walk towards the car, waiting for the driver to pull down the window before leaning in. You couldn’t hear what was said, only watched the two speak for a minute.
Their conversation ended with Jay handing the man money, before walking back towards you as the car sped away in the darkness.
“What the hell was that?”, you asked as Jay came to stand beside you again, his body just as relaxed as before. “You’re new in Chicago, right?” You didn’t say anything, knowing it was a question he didn’t expect an answer to.
“You should not be climbing into a car with a stranger. And not in the dark.”
Your head spun as you tried to process what he was implying. “It was just an uber! Everyone does that around here.”
You sounded clueless and defensive, shocked about the sudden change of events. Jay eyed you. “Well, then take it from me to never do that again. At least not alone. Chicago’s not a good place, especially for women, trust me on that one.”
You didn’t know what to say, blinking at him as the impact of it sank in. What if Jay hadn’t stepped outside? You doubted anything would have happened, but what if he was right and you had been reckless? Naive?
“So how am I supposed to get around the city then? Because driving in this traffic is madness.”
For the first time since your interruption Jay smiled again. “You can just ask me. I am much cheaper anyway. And on top you will get to see my face.”
You rolled your eyes over his confidence. “Now that’s a deal I can’t decline”, you muttered, fighting the grin that threatened to spread over your face and failing. Damn it.
“But for real, what am I supposed to do? I can’t just call you all the time I want to go somewhere.”
“It wouldn’t be a problem if we went together.”
Your eyes widened as you almost choked on the air. “You mean a date?”
Jay shrugged, his eyes not meeting yours for only a second. “You can pay me back for saving your ass twice.”
“Twice?”
“Getting into that car for one and saving you from freezing here on the street by driving you home.”
Smooth. You couldn’t help the laugh that escaped you. “Does that work with every woman you’re trying to impress?”
Jay shrugged, fiddling for something in his pocket before pulling out his car keys. You watched a car light up at the other side of the street, following Jay towards it.
“I wouldn’t know. And who says I’m trying to impress you?”
“Maybe because of this whole I’m-a-cop-and-I’m-so-tough-thing.”
Now it was Jay’s turn to chuckle. “That’s not just a thing. So, what are you saying?”
Oh. You bit your lip, considering the thought of going on a date with Jay. Hadn’t you just recently decided not to date and focus on yourself for a while?
But you couldn’t deny you wanted to say yes. To spend more time around him and enjoy the feeling of ease he gave you.
“Maybe.”
You said it with a teasing smile, scared Jay might take your answer in a bad way, but he sent you a confident grin. “I can work with that.”

i did a season 13 wishlist, stellaride edition so i thought i’d also do a season 13 wishlist, non-stellaride edition:
1. at least one episode where a call takes up the majority of the episode. maybe a mass casualty episode like the train derailment in season 2
2. more morning briefings with everyone and more scenes of everyone eating or just sitting in the common room.
3. we get to see more of cindy and chloe, and the kids
4. some type of event that requires everyone to get dressed, like a gala or dinner. and like a cfd like they had in season 7.
5. more fire related calls
6. we see kelly bond more with violet and form a good friendship with with cruz, herrmann, and maybe carver.
7. ritter gets more screentime (this was already confirmed that he will but i still wanted to add it)
8. damon and lizzy don’t get together and instead just become friends, like kelly and shay were.
9. cute brother scenes with damon and kelly
10. katie comes back
11. kelly gets storylines not about arson. and if we do get an arson case with kelly, that he does one with violet.
12. stella’s backstory and kelly being supportive. i really want to meet her aunt laverne and hear about what her parents were like.
13. we get to see boden
14. this is so random but i want another firehouse dog. i miss pouch and tuesday 😭

Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring Superleggera
The Disco Volante is a two-seater Gran Turismo. It is based on the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione coupé with its front-central mounted 4.7 litre V8 engine and a transaxle rear drive with unmodified specifications. Each unit, of which the construction requires 4,000 hours of manual work. The present Disco Volante celebrates the myth of the 1952 style icon. The new design briefing required to blend ingredients as innovation, emotion and aerodynamic properties into a timeless and essential shape.During the development stage, Head of Design Louis de Fabribeckers and his team cooperated with the engineers on an almost daily basis. “We focused on the preservation of the design essence. – says de Fabribeckers – Once the design frozen, we had to understand the manufacturing problems and solve them right away without compromising the design.”In consistency with the car’s design philosophy the interior has a ‘science fiction’ feel to it. Part of this ‘spaceship’ atmosphere was created by elements like the red LED interior light profiles. Also, aeronautics has been the inspiration for parts like the dashboard, instruments and seat adjustment lever. The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione chassis was chosen for its light and rigid structure and its outstanding dynamic properties. Therefore it forms the perfect basis for the coach-built bodywork of the Disco Volante, integrally conserving the rolling chassis and drive train. The Alfa Romeo 8C’s steel space-frame and other structural elements were retained to guarantee torsion stiffness, high performance and the quality standard. The frame members and the central carbon cell remained unchanged. Elements of the underpinning and the body, such as the engine bay and firewall, the windscreen and cowl, the a-pillar and the locks and hinges have been retained too, just as the dashboard and instruments, the pedals and the steering wheel. Parts like doorframes, the roof frame and the c-pillar have been modified to match with the new shape. The layout of a front-central mounted engine, a transaxle transmission and rear-wheel drive offers an optimal weight distribution of 49-51% between the front and rear axles. To ensure excellent handling the front and rear double-wishbone suspension scheme is combined with hub carriers of forged aluminium and additional trailing arms for the rear suspension. The lightweight and compact 4.7 litre V8 engine delivers 450HP and 480Nm peak torque. It is coupled with a six-speed sequential transaxle gearbox with electronic control and paddle-shift gear selection. Together with a limited-slip differential and a state-of-the-art braking system with large diameter, ventilated discs a precise, dynamic and proactive drive is ensured. The Disco Volante can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 4,2 seconds and has a top speed of about 290 km/h (181 mph).
All new and modified components of the Disco Volante have been CAD designed. In this process, which covers feasibility, safety, homologation, aerodynamics and structural analysis, the most advanced IT tools and simulation techniques have been used.
Since torsion stiffness and noise reduction are of critical importance, special attention has been paid to the under-body structure and its elements, like the tubular frames supporting the rear wings and bumper, and the roll bar joining the c-pillars. Other complex design issues were the tailgate hinges, the 3d-cambered door window, and the front wheel covers.
The Disco Volante was then submitted to a CFD aerodynamic study to enhance the airflow and ensure optimal downforce in the rear section. After that, FEM calculations were run to assess resistance and rigidity of all parts subject to homologation.
Touring Superleggera is synonymous with the manufacture of lightweight bodywork. The weight advantage of aluminium is one of the assets of Touring Superleggera’s construction methods. Nowadays however, the craft of hand-beating aluminium panels is combined with the use of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). For the Disco Volante, Touring decided to use this combination of aluminium and CFRP. This has been the result of a study conducted to define optimal use of materials for the bodywork in terms of weight, resistance, precision, finish and quality, and ease of repair in case of damage.
The CFRP is used for specific components like the front bumper and grille, the bonnet, the skirts, the boot lid and the integrated rear-window frame. The bonnet and the boot lid are sandwich-built with Nomex filler in-between to obtain a better stiffness/weight ratio and to dampen vibration and noise.
The aluminium panels are hand-beaten using an epoxy mould. Since the inner frames of most parts of the bodywork are made of CFRP, this requires gluing of aluminium on carbon fibre. This technique adds to the rigidity as the glue has structural properties.
The body panels are pre-assembled on a laser measurement platform using a jig. This ensures that the strict tolerance required is respected. After adjustment, the panels are either welded or glued. The body-in-white is then used to preassemble and fit all trim components, brightware and moulding.

One night stand
Characters: Will Halstead x Sibling!Reader, Jay Halstead x Sibling!Reader, Sylvie Brett, Sarah Rheese, Ethan Choi
Warnings: Mentions of drinking, fainting, pregnancy.
Summary: Your brothers aren't exactly over the moon when they find out your pregnant and you don't know who the dad is.
A/N: I know that I've put out several halstead!sister fics but I promise, the next one will be different because I have lots of requests and drafts coming together.
*****
You were going to blame the hot weather. No matter how many Chicago summers you lived and are still living through, you would always despise heatwaves. You were a winter baby through and through.
Jumping out the ambo, you harshly swallowed when your throat suddenly felt dry, slamming the passenger door shut when the room started spinning.
Leaning a hand against the ambo which was hot to the touch, you didn't even wince despite the fact that you probably could've burned yourself by doing so.
"Y/N, you okay?" Sylvie asked, cautiously rounding the ambo to your side, noticing you weren't as energetic as usual. You hadn't followed her into the common room like you usually did, running past to get coffee before her so you wouldn't have the job of brewing another pot.
You hummed, screwing your eyes shut as you tried to keep your breaths steady, breathing in and out deeply. You tried brushing her off, trying to say you were completely fine but you struggled to even form words.
Wanting to be stubborn, you attempted to push her away but you failed. You ended up pushing the air away and that only further convinced Sylvie that you were anything but okay.
"Alright, let's get you in the rig." She said, wrapping an arm around, basically supporting all of your weight.
"Ladies! Lunch is-" Cruz cut himself of, freezing in his steps when he saw your pale self being supported by Sylvie who was struggling to walk with you on her side.
Without being asked, Cruz went to your empty side and easily carried you, taking you off of Sylvie so she could open the doors of the rig. But, before Cruz could sweep you off your feet, you lost all feeling in your body and everything went black.

Ignoring his awaiting patients chart, Will nodded to what he was being told, immersed in Sarah's story she retolled of what happened while she was in med school. Her experiences were interesting to say the least.
Before Will could reply, their conversation was stopped by Maggie who was shouting for him as she walked towards the ambo bay doors. Jutting his head towards the charge nurses direction, Sarah followed the attending, copying his actions even when he came to a sudden stop, bumping into his back courtesy of Maggie.
Will was now being told not to pursue any further, Maggie's hand in his face as she looked down at her brick, her eyebrows furrowed in conflict.
"CFD's in the house." Maggie said loud enough for the two doctors to hear. None of this wasn't new, firefighters came in all the time with burns and smoke inhalation, what was different this time?
"Rheese, your with Dr Choi. Dr Halstead, pregnant woman in five." Maggie said, pointing the doctors in their respective directions. Sarah complied, following after Ethan who was jogging towards the bay doors but Will stayed standing.
"Maggie, what's wron-" Will stopped himself. It suddenly dawned on him why he was no longer going to treat the patient coming in. "Don't tell me it's Y/N."
Will didn't even need to see the empathy that Maggie was sending him because when the bay doors opened he only saw one paramedic and a gaggle of firefighters following behind her and you were nowhere in sight. No, instead your red hair was splayed underneath you on the stretcher.
"She was fine but suddenly felt dizzy and couldn't keep upright before going unconscious." Sylvie's voice cracked as she started to relay, leaving out bits of information since everyone already knew who you were. She had no idea what was wrong with you and when she couldn't find out, all she could think of was losing you.
Reading off vitals, Ethan got to work, shouting around orders causing everyone to fly around. It was organised chaos to anyone who had any idea as to what was happening.
Will was being held back by Maggie who stood by his side, both looking into the treatment room wanting to know what was happening to you. You had yet to regain consciousness but that was yet to be deemed a good or bad thing.
"Jay." Will whispered in realisation. "I need to call Jay."
Despite his declaration, Will found himself glued to the spot, his eyes solely on your lifeless figure on the bed.
"I've got it." Maggie assured the redhead, patting his arm as she reached for her phone and scrolled for the contact of detective Halstead.
"Jay? Hey, it's Maggie..."
*****
When you awoke, you knew exactly where you were based of two tells: the incessant beeping and the strong smell of everything sterile. There was only one place in the world that could be so recogniseable without gaining full consciousness.
You groaned, screwing your eyes shut the second you pried them open when you were met with blinding lights. You noticed how your body felt much lighter than before, your head no longer pounding but your throat felt like a desert.
"And the sleeping beauty awakes, at last." Jay says whimsically, a cup of water in his hand with a plastic straw meant for you.
Your reply was simply a groan, swallowing the water and relishing in the relief it brought you. This heatwave and your back to back calls were definitely the cause of your dehydration.
"Will's gone to get Dr Choi." Jay said, sitting back down in the chair he'd been occupying since his arrival. Linking your fingers with his, Jay tried to forget the moment he found out you were brought the med, the heavy sensation in his chest was one he never wanted to feel ever again.
"Hey, it's good to see you awake." Ethan entered the room, following after Will. The three men were still in their work attire, letting you deduce you weren't out for too long.
"You okay with me saying everything now?" Ethan asked despite already knowing the answer, having seen how close-knit the Halstead siblings were, especially when it came to any of their healths.
You nodded without hesitation, tightening your grip around Jay's hand. Fear was coursing through your veins. This could literally be anything and everything. There were no symptoms and it was all so sudden.
"You were a little dehydrated and there's no concussion seeing as Cruz cushioned your fall." Ethan started with, looking back and forth from each sibling before letting the news loose.
"Your HCG levels are also elevated."
And just like that, your world was flipped upside down.
"I'm pregnant?" You asked, shocked at the revelation. There was no way you could be pregnant. You had no symptoms and the last time you has sex was- Oh, nevermind.
With short and quick congratulations, Ethan was out the room, closing the curtains behind him, finally leaving the three siblings together, all three of them wide awake.
The tension and awkwardness was pulsating. It was so thick you could probably choke on it.
"I'm gonna keep it." For some reason, that was the first thing you said. Even without seeing the life living inside you, you felt the sudden need to defend it, fighting to the death if you had to.
"What- Why wouldn't you?" Will stuttered, looking at you in confusion. "It's your kid, of course you'd have it."
"That does raise the question though." Jay said with one brow raised, looking at you expectantly. "Who's the lucky man's record I'm going to have to look for."
You huffed, pushing Jay's smirking face away from you. You knew that Jay would do exactly that and much more. He'd probably try and get Voight and the entire unit to intimidate the man so they could question his credibility.
"Ummm." You thought hard. In all seriousness, who was the dad?
"I don't know." You shrugged, lips pursed as you pondered, ignoring the concerned faces of your older brothers. "I did have a one night stand a little over a month ago when I was a little too drunk."
"A one night stand?"
"Y/N M/N Halstead!"
You winced, screwing your eyes shut at the volume of your brothers. Their shock and possible anger was easily validated, they did just find out their baby sister was pregnant via a one night stand. The father was a ghost.
"It's fine." You shrugged them off, ignoring their scolding as you insisted. "I can raise a baby, heck, I'd raise an amazing child." You boasted with a little bit of pride.
"And my big brothers are going to be just the best uncles." You said with an amused smile, your voice imitating a mother playing with her kid.
And with nearly three decades of experience, you successfully had Jay and Will convinced, caving despite the strong Halstead stubbornness you all seemed to inherit from your pops.
"Baby Halstead is going to be just fine."
Of course baby Halstead would be fine. Actually, she'd be more than fine with her mum being a paramedic and her biological uncles being a detective and doctor. Not to forgot the aunts and uncles from intelligence, the firehouse and the ED.
Baby girl Halstead was going to be the most protected daughter in all of Chicago because hell would rain down the second harm came within five metres of her.

Line: "I close my eyes and the flashback starts." Location: hospital
This is not how Matt envisioned spending his first day home. He truly believed the worst was over now that he was back on Chicago’s hallowed ground. He and Sylvie made it through. They were together again and planning a life together. What could go wrong?
Everything. The answer is everything.
In all his time working for the CFD, he had never once heard of a bomb being mailed to anyone. But especially not a firehouse.
And now Sylvie is in the ER. He wasn’t at 51, he didn’t watch it happen, but he got a call from Stella afterward. She wasn’t sure of Sylvie’s condition. The scene was chaotic, she never saw her, but she knows she was loaded into an ambo and driven away.
Fear squeezes his heart like a vice. The waiting area is full of first responders, already wanting to know how to support 51. Thankfully, the bomb didn’t go off inside the firehouse or this could have been a lot worse. It’s all the comfort he can manage until he sets his eyes on Sylvie.
He storms through the waiting area and passes the double doors into the ED. Everyone else may be waiting patiently but he isn’t. His fiancée is through those doors. The mother of their newly adopted daughter is in danger. He’d take a sledge to the hospital wall to get to her if he had to. There’s no stopping him.
Maggie must have predicted he would barge in as he pleased because she’s waiting for him in front of the nurse’s station.
“Kidd said Sylvie’s—“
“She’s fine, Casey. She’s okay.”
“No offense, Maggie, but I’d like to judge that for myself.”
She points behind him to Trauma 3 and Matt hurriedly spins around. The flashback hits him with as much force as a halligan to the head. It takes him back to that day, years ago now, where she fell through the floor. The day he had to watch her cry through tears of physical pain. The day they lost Otis.
Because sitting on the hospital bed, feet dangling over the edge, is Sylvie. Her arm in a sling, her face covered in dust, and tears in her eyes. She looks small and scared but whole. Blessedly whole.
“Thank god,” Matt mutters, taking a deep breath as he steps into the small room.
“Matt!” Sylvie exclaims, throwing her good arm around him.
“Hey,” he says, pulling her as close as he can without jostling her arm. The same arm she broke in the Arnow collapse. “I’m here.” He leans back and frames her face with his hands, thumbs swiping at tracks of tears on her cheeks. “Are you okay? What happened?”
“That poor delivery driver,” she says, with a shaky inhale. She pauses to exhale, willing herself to calm down. “I don’t think it was supposed to happen that way, Matt. He picked up the package and turned to face the house and then…all of a sudden I was thrown into the back of the open ambo. My elbow slammed into the stretcher and now I’m here. God, it happened so fast I don’t even know if — oh god, how’s everyone else? Do you know? Have you talked to anyone?”
He closes his eyes, imagining all the ways today could have cost him everything, and then forces the images away. Right now, Sylvie needs him and panicking over how close he came to a life without her won’t help. He kisses her grimey forehead and then presses his against her temple, pressing her to his side.
“Just Stella. She didn’t know much either. The scene at 51 is chaos and she’s working with Boden to try and get a head count.”
Sylvie rubs her good hand across her forehead as she takes in the only new information he has. “Well,” she says meeting his eyes with a loud sniffle. “Welcome home, I guess. Some first day, huh?”
“Any day you’re with me is better than most,” he assures her. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” she replies, relaxing into his arms. “God, I’m glad you’re here. I don’t know if I could handle this without you.”
He’s glad he’s here too. He can’t imagine hearing about this from the other side of the country. Now, more than ever, he’s glad he came to his senses and proposed. From here on out, they’ll never have to deal with a crisis like this alone again. They’ll always figure it out. Together.
***
This is kinda based on some things I’ve seen and heard about 12x01 filming. As usual, I’m probably wrong lol.
Send me a Taylor Swift or Kelsea Ballerini lyric and location to my ask box! I’ll write you a Brettsey fic too! 💗

There's Three of You?! Pt. 7
Finally! Part 7 and, *drumroll please...* Enter Connor Rhodes, Sarah Reese, and the rest of the Med gang!! I'm so excited!
Let us begin!
Warnings: foul language, might be some medical inconsistencies.
CHAPTER 7
After some months, the new Emergency Department was finally gonna be inaugurated.
While the ED was been remodeled, many new people joined the team, such as our new head nurse Maggie Lockwood, and other doctors, like Dr. Ethan Choi, who specializes in infectious diseases, Dr. Natalie Manning, a pediatrician… she is a good doctor but I personally don’t like her, and many others. And there was also a student doctor, Sarah Reesee, who is just so cute! She seems a bit insecure, but I hope we can get her out of her shell. Meanwhile, some people stayed… and by some people I mean my personal headache: Dr. Zanetti.
And also, we were all sent on a leave while the ED was made… which was good, we had some time off and Will and I were able to catch up after all the time he was away.
Ms. Goodwin asked us all to be on time, wearing our coats and standing outside the doors for the grand reopening. Wearing mine, which had the hospital’s logo and name on the left side, my name stitched on the right with the words “Emergency Medicine” just below it made me proud. My burgundy scrubs matching my brother’s, as well as all of the other doctors.
The media and press where here, as well as the mayor, it was big.
“Thank you. We owe a great debt of gratitude to one man in particular. He championed us, supported us, and happily, along the way, befriended us. Without his help, this incredible new emergency department would never have become a reality. Our Mayor, Rahm Emanuel.” She said, we all cheered for him, he gave us something we were only gonna be able to repay him by giving our patients the best care possible.
“Thank you. On behalf of all the people of the City of Chicago, all the families, all the parents who will be bringing their kids and their family members here in dire need of care, I want to thank you ahead of schedule for what you do every day to making sure that everybody counts in the City of Chicago. Thank you.” said the mayor.
We all again cheered for him. Then with the help of Ms Goodwin they cutted the ribbon, Will and I cheered the loudest, and just as it fell, Will’s pager went off, then mine too, then it was as if a symphony of pagers had started. I looked at Will, he looked at me, then Natalie looked at us, and as we were trying to understand what was happening, the mayor was ushered away and the ED doors opened, Maggie came out calling what could only be my worst nightmare for the first/second-first day at the same hospital.
“CFD Plan 2, mass cas. Multiple trauma patients minutes away. Let's go!” she said.
As one, we all started entering the ED. Will, Ethan and I being some of the first people inside, I had already taken off my coat, looked at them both and they understood, passing me their coats. I opened the door to the doctors lounge, threw the coats on the sofa and went back out. I grabbed a pair of gloves and snapped them on as I was waiting for the patients to arrive.
Some flashbacks from the bomber incident filled my mind for a second. I shook my head to get back to reality, and just in time, because the first patient was rolled in, followed by the rest.
Maggie waved at the sensor at the door for it to open faster.
“What do we have?” she asked the paramedic.
“45-year-old male, left leg amputation.” he answered, I walked up to him, then looked at Maggie.
“Treatment two!” she said, we walked there, got the patient into a bed, but I could still hear the commotion outside.
“Train motorman. GCS 3. BP of 90 by palp.” another paramedic said.
“Maggie, where’re we going?” asked my brother.
“Go to trauma 4.” she answered. After that, I focused on my patient.
I asked for a chest x-ray to make sure my decision to put in a chest tube was right after my initial assessment with my stethoscope, -surprise, it was, had to cut into him to control a big left pressure hemopneumothorax with some shift-, I then secured his airway, -to no one's surprise, he started crashing, his pressure dropped as well as his O2 levels, I had to intubate him, which only took me about 15 seconds, he had a loose jaw which worried me a bit-, then treated the blood loss and sent him up into the OR to try and fix the stump this guy was gonna get after losing his leg.
I took off the gloves I was wearing and grabbed a new pair on my way to the ambulance bay, just then, another patient rolled in… with a guy on top of him performing CPR.
“28-year-old male, crush injuries, severed artery, massive blood loss.” I heard the guy say, I started walking towards him to help.
“Trauma three just opened.” said Maggie.
“Got a tourniquet on his right leg. Tried to intubate but couldn't get his jaw open. He lost his pulse on the ride.” he added. Well that’s not good, not good at all.
“Put him on our monitor and rapid transfuser. Grab 4 units of O-neg, and start with a round of epi.” said my brother.
“Already hit him with the epi times two. Still no pulse. He's in fib.” said the guy again.
“Let's get him in the bay. I got it from here, man.” said my brother, but the guy refused to give up.
“Nope, he's mine.” he said
“Okay, who the hell is this guy?” asked my brother, irritated, I wanted to smack him, but it wouldn’t look professional.
“Says he's a doc.” said one of the paramedics.
“Get off the gurney, Doc. I'm senior resident in this ER.” said my brother, throwing his status around.
“Yeah? Well, I'm your new trauma fellow.” said the raven haired man. Damn! Outranked by the new guy.
“And I’m a junior resident but you don’t see me bragging about it Will. Focus on the patients.” I said, walking into the the trauma bay to assist the guy.
“Dr. Halstead!” I heard Maggie call and I lifted my head, at the same time that Will turned his. This called the attention of the new guy, Maggie pointed to my brother to indicate it was him who she was calling.
Then came in the student doctor, Sarah Reese… she’s kinda cute.
“Hold compressions.” ordered the guy, then cutted a line in the patient’s trachea to be able to stick the tube to ventilate. Then he turned to us. “You are?”
“Sarah Reese, fourth year med student.” said the girl beside me.
“Dr. Lillian Halstead. Junior resident.” I answered
“Can you do a cordis in the groin?” he asked Reesee.
“Mm-hmm.” she answered.
“Get a left femoral in there.” he told her.
“Yes, sir.” she answered, she went and got the kit, started doing the procedure in the slowest pase possible. Even I was getting desperate, I took the disinfectant and squirted a good amount on the area.
“There, you're sterilized.” I said first, I never saw the new doctor was looking at us. “Now stick it.” the new guy and I said at the same time, that surprised me, but I hid it well.
She tried to get the line started, but she couldn’t, she was visibly struggling to get it. Doris, one of the nurses commented on it.
“He's a patient, not a pin cushion.” she said coldly.
“I can't find a vein.” said Reesee, I took over and got the line on my first try, drawing a bit of blood.
“Done.” I said.
“All right. Shock to 120.” he instructed, as the machine was appropriately charged, he gave another instruction. “Clear.” We all stepped back and the patient was shocked.
“No pulse.” Said Doris.
“Again. 200. Clear.” he said again, changing the voltage this time.
We all stay where we are and this second shock manages to restart the patients heart.
“I have a pulse. Sinus tach at 112.” said Doris again, I let out a relieved breath I didn’t know I was holding.
“And...he's back. Get a BP and keep giving him blood. Send a rainbow of tubes and a type and cross. Get his blood gas and get him to the OR.” he instructed, I helped with the handrail on the gurney and the nurses rolled it out of the room, heading straight for the elevators.
I snap my gloves off and out of the corner of my eye see Ms. Goodwin stepping away from the room. I turn to the girl who seemed upset, I place my hand on her shoulder.
“Please don’t take it personally. When you’re in the ED, you gotta be quick. Ok?” I asked her, she just nodded, still a bit down in the dumps, I tried to cheer her up. “Between you and me, I was treated as an errand girl on my first day, getting scolded by a doctor? Seems like nothing in comparison.” she smiled a small smile and stepped out. I smiled too, and then stepped out of the room myself.
I was about to go see if I had another patient, but to my surprise I found Dr. Hotshot on an empty room, without a shirt on, stitching his arm. I grabbed my third pair of gloves of the day and made my presence known to him.
“Dr. Mystery, I thought you could use these.” I said, he only turned his head momentarily to look over his shoulder. Sweet Jesus, if I wasn’t tired of men, he would be THE top of my dating list.
“Thank you.” he said, I smiled at him and then looked down at the needle and thread he was using.
“How'd that happen?” I asked, he kept his attention on what he was doing.
“Must have snagged it on the wreckage.” he said, as if it was an everyday occurrence, again not looking at me.
“You know, we do have a couple of doctors around here.” at that he did turn to look at me and gave me a small smile. “I could hook you up.” I said, teasing smile on my face, pointing to my name stitched into my scrub so he could see the «Dr.» before my name.
“I don't need one, but I could use some help though. Come be my other hand.” he said with a small smile on his face, my smile remained but it changed to a sincere one. I took a step closer to him and was finally able to notice the technique in his stitching so far.
“Oh, nice. You closed that like a plastic surgeon. Where'd you pick that up?” I asked, curious he looked at me quickly and gave another small smile, before focusing on his arm again.
“Riyadh. Spent a year there after my residency. Saudis paid me well not to leave unsightly scars.” he explained, giving me another quick glance, I was honestly impressed. Then his tone changed into a questiouning one, “Could you pinch those two sides together?” I did, but he kept his attention on what he was doing.
“What about a tetanus shot?” I recomended, taking in consideration that we didn’t know what he nicked himself with.
“No, I am current, Dr. Lillian… Lillian Halstead.” he said, after reading my name, I figured that when I introduced myself earlier his mind wasn’t on my name, but on the patient he was treating, I smiled at him again.
He looked at me with those, oh so, blue eyes of his, and I wanted to melt. Sweet Mother of God! This man is HANDSOME.
“English? Irish?” he asked, curiosity clear in his eyes.
“Irish ascendance actually, my great-times-something grandparents were Irish immigrants who came here with the, now famous, «American Dream», but I was born and raised here in Chicago, Canaryville to be exact, you?”
“Chicago too. Born and bred as well. Been away for a while.” he said, I became curious, haven’t heard his name yet and still I’m learning a lot about this guy.
“Welcome home then.” I said, the smile still on my face. His smile was enough answer for me.
I left the room and went into the doctors lounge, grabbed my coat from the couch and hanged it in the space under my locker, which was right beside my brother’s. Just then I noticed my brother, sitting at one of the computers, a coffee mug near him, looking lost as Hell.
“Well, there's something I don't often see: Will Halstead looking stumped.” I said to tease him. He sighed.
“Why is it that brain injuries are never like you read in the textbooks?” he asked while getting up, grabbing the mug and serving himself another cup of coffee, I shrugged and nodded him to go on.
“My pregnant TBI patient, bilateral contusions. She was a GCS 3. And now, all of a sudden, she's exhibiting movement, and she's improved to a 6.” he said.
“Well, color me impressed. That’s the first time I hear something like that, but that’s good, right?” I asked him, he shrugged.
“Yeah. The baby's parents will be happy.” he said, a bit irritated, I looked at him questioningly. “Oh, she's a-- she's a surrogate.” he added.
“Oh. Wow.” I said, knowing what that meant, and knowing my brother knew I had understood his position.
“Yeah.” he said, I sat on the sofa and he was on the table. As soon as my butt hit the cushions I let out a tired groan.
“You meet the new guy yet?” I asked Will, then facepalmed myself because, yes he has, I nearly bit this idiot’s head off for snapping at him in the ED.
“You could say that… you were there! Likes to throw his weight around. I don't know, strikes me as a little arrogant.” he said, I gave him my signature «are you kidding me» look at that statement.
“Takes one to know one” I whispered to myself, but being the only ones in the lounge, it was perfectly clear for my brother, he looked at me with a confused and surprised smile.
“What’s that supposed to mean young lady? I’m not arrogant” he said, I couldn’t hold it in and I started laughing, he looked at me and chuckled.
“Hey, I am not arrogant.” he repeated, I snorted again.
“No, no, no, no, no, of course you’re not, you just happen to know more than anybody else.” I said, then stood up and left, but had to hold the door open for little Ms. Natalie Manning.
“Dr. Manning.” I said as a greeting, she looked at me and gave the fakest sweetest smile I have ever seen.
“Hey Lilly.” she said with that awfully sweet tone, as soon as she was inside the lounge, my brother’s attitude changed entirely, I wanted to gag. So I just let the door fall close and went on my merry way around the ED to see who else I could help.
I witnessed April calling Dr. Mystery away to meet with the relative of the patient he treated, Jorge Melendez, -as I had learned his name-, and was yet again surprised by this new doctor who spoke Spanish fluently. I walked over to Maggie and April with a shocked look on my face.
“He speaks Spanish?” asked Maggie in a whisper, I let out a little chuckle, -the one Will swears makes me look/sound exactly like Jay, but won’t admit he makes it too-, then bit my lower lip. That made both nurses look at me.
“If I wasn’t swinging for women right now, I would definitely date him.” I said as if it was nothing, that made both Maggie and April look at me with even more shock on their faces.
“Wait, you’re…” but April’s question was cutted short with the arrival of a very familiar person’s voice.
“But to me, you're as fair as you were, Maggie. When you and I were young.” Hermann sang as he placed a container on top of the desk.
“Hey, Herrmann.” the three of us answered, one after the other, he smiled at us.
“You boys hanging in there?” asked Maggie, being the total mother hen I’ve learned she is.
“Well, you know, it's a train wreck.” he said, I wanted to laugh but knew it wasn’t the time.
“Hm.” was Maggie’s answer.
“You?” he asked, being the sweetheart that he is.
“Same.” Maggie again answered.
“Is that from the crash site?” I asked, pointing slightly towards the container.
“Yeah, it's the first load.” he said, looking at me, then looking back at the container. “Cell phones, shoes, wallets, purses.”
“Thank you.” I said, smiling a sincere smile at him.
“You're welcome.” he smiled back, he started leaving until he called me again. “Hey kiddo.” I turned to look at him. “Good to see you.” he said, I smiled at him again.
I let Maggie open the container and took the first bag that came out to inspect it, trying to find something to identify the owner. We looked at each other in slight shock when we discovered she had pulled Jorge’s bag. I gave Maggie the honor of delivering the bag and its contents to Marina, -the woman who I had learned was Jorge’s girlfriend-, and then went into the doctors lounge again, this time to update some charts on my amputee patient.
Then came in Will, for another cup of coffee. I was about to make a comment about it and how a lot of coffee wasn’t really good for his health, but the new guy entered the room, dressed in his scrubs, looking hot as hell, but with a tired/irritated expression on his face.
I was then witness to the stupidest argument ever.
“Your comatose guy… seems like you'd want to put him on the hypothermic protocol and protect his brain.” said Will, then he placed the rim of his cup to his lips and took sip from it, I thought it would be a good idea, but I had seen the medical history of the guy, it wouldn’t work, poor Jamie had been through Hell and back.
“Well, I just gave him 20 units of blood. His pH is only 7.2, and he's too cold to make a clot, so I didn't see how the hypothermic protocol would help him.” the new doctor said while putting on his coat, I noticed the name on it and became genuinely surprised.
“Hey, you're the fellow. I'm just a resident.” said my brother, and I honestly wanted to strangle Will.
The new guy went to the little coffee bar, grabbed a mug and served himself some coffee, I considered getting my own second dose of caffeine for the day, but just then, my brother decided to open his mouth again.
Will… watch what comes out of your mouth next, if not, I’ll be the one having to resuscitate you after I kill you.
“Heard you're local. Me, too. Where'd you grow up?” he asked, the new doc, Dr. Rhodes, looked like he was gonna strangle my brother before me if he didn’t shut up.
“Lake Shore Drive.” I was impressed, getting those details made me realize who exactly was Dr. Rhodes, but decided to keep my mouth shut, if he hadn’t said anything yet, it was for a reason.
Will let out an impressed whistle before answering “Nice. Well, I doubt we have any friends in common.” Dr. Rhodes looked at my brother with a «try me» kind of expression. “Canaryville.” my brother added next.
“Oh.” said Dr. Rhodes, just then he noticed me, but I made the universal sign for silence and pleaded with my eyes for him not to say anything.
“Where'd you go to med school? Johns Hopkins? Stanford?” Will asked, and AGAIN I wanted to strangle him.
“No. I went to UAG.” Rhodes said, I was impressed. Like I said before, I was learning more about him by the minute.
“Where's that?” asked Will. That’s when I decided to make my presence known.
“Guadalajara.” both Rhodes and I said, Will, honest to God, jumped when he heard me.
“Didn't see that coming.” he said. “Nor saw you in here.” he said to me, like it was an afterthought. Just then his phone got a notification, he pulled it out, looked at it and excused himself, grabbing his coat on his way out. “Got to go.”
I let out a long breath, covering my face with my hands, I heard Dr. Rhodes move, and I assumed he turned to look at me. I dragged my hands down my face, not caring about my make up, I was gonna end up redoing it by the end of the day anyway.
“Please ignore my brother. I’m pretty sure he knocked his head somewhere along the line when he was a kid.” I said, finally looking at my new colleague, he let out a small snort.
“So… the red knucklehead is your brother, Dr. Halstead?” he asked with a bit of a teasing tone, a very huge difference compared to his earlier mood.
“Lilly, enough with hearing 'Dr. Halstead' outside and having to ask if it’s me or Will Maggie’s calling for.” I said, he smiled at me, seeing as I wasn’t judging him on the first try.
“Connor. Pleasure to meet you Lilly. Thanks for your help earlier, and also, I’m sorry. I realized that I never introduced myself, properly, to you, so… Connor Rhodes, trauma surgeon.” he said, offering me his hand to shake, I took it and gave it a firm squeeze and shake.
“Pleasure. Again, I’m sorry about my idiot of a brother, he dismisses his brain-mouth filter sometimes.” I said. Connor chuckled at that, then kept a small smile on his face.
“Well, as long as you don’t dismiss that filter, we’ll be fine.” I smiled at him.
“Oh believe me, my personality is more Jay than Will… but I do have my moments.” he seemed confused for a second, then I remember that I mentioned Jay. “Jay’s my older brother.” I said, he looked surprised.
“So there’s three of you? Wow, you must be Chicago’s worst nightmare.” he said, a teasing glint to his eyes, I let out my patented Halstead Chuckle®.
“Only for bad guys and diseases.” I said, he again looked confused. “ Will and I are doctors, Jay’s a detective with the CPD’s Intelligence Unit.” I explained, now Connor was the one who let out an impressed whistle.
“Didn’t see that one coming.” he said, I smiled at him and offered my fist to him. He understood and bumped it. “Thanks Lilly, I really needed that.” he added. I again smiled and went on to check on my amputee patient in the ICU.
Finally!! Up to speed with AO3, which, by the way, if you want to go and leave some kudos there, feel free to do so, I'll post the link later.
Thanks again for giving this story a go and putting up with my craziness and shenanigans.
Love you all a lot, see you soon!

day twenty six - thrown out of a window
notes: the end is in sight! thanks for sticking around!
read on AO3 or below
Kelly’s repeated involvement with OFI had been the source of many, many arguments between him and Stella in the past. After his time in Alabama put a huge strain on their marriage, Kelly really cut back on full-scale arson investigations and only let his ‘fire cop’ side out when he had Stella’s full support.
Kelly had a natural talent for arson investigation and denying him the opportunity to use that talent was doing him, the CFD, and the city of Chicago (and beyond) a disservice. Stella never wanted Kelly to feel like she was holding him back, and he’d earned her trust again after Arizona, so she tried to be on board with Fire Cop Kelly coming out every now and then.
Things had been going well for Kelly; he was focusing on Stella, their relationship, and his job at the firehouse. Truck was going through a lot of changes and Kelly wanted to be there for Stella as much as he could.
Then the fires started.
At first, they were small. The fires only caused structural damage but it was clear they’d been intentionally set. Chicago had itself a serial arsonist.
Very quickly, the fires got bigger and more dangerous as the arsonist grew bolder. More injuries were reported as the arsonist moved on from abandoned buildings to stores, businesses, and apartments.
Two firefighters died after a collapse at a department store fire, which was a loss felt by every member of the CFD, and others were injured in a fire at an office building but it was the members of Truck 81 getting trapped and nearly dying during an apartment fire that did it for Kelly. The arsonist needed to be stopped so, with Stella’s blessing and a whole lot of anger and determination, Kelly made a temporary jump to OFI.
Time was of the essence but there was a lot of evidence to get through. The arsonist was careful but the bigger and bolder he got, the sloppier he became. A pattern became noticeable and, whether intentional or not, clues were left behind at different scenes.
The police were helping as well, turning over any recovered CCTV footage from the fires to OFI. Between the camera footage and tips called in, Kelly and the OFI team finally had a lead on who the arsonist was and where he was hiding.
It was just after sunset when the OFI team rolled up to a rundown motel near the city limits. It was a seedy looking place, just two stories tall and in desperate need of renovations. Half the rooms were boarded up, there were cracks in the walls and rust on the railings and stairs. The motel had closed a while ago but the accompanying police officers said they wouldn’t be surprised if people had taken to squatting in the empty rooms.
One by one they searched through the rooms. While there were signs of obvious squatting, none of the rooms so far had shown any recent activity.
Until they arrived at the room on the corner.
Kelly was the first one through the door and right away, he knew they’d found the right room. The walls were covered with newspaper clippings of the fires, those that mentioned deaths and injuries were front and center. Bottles of accelerants and empty gas cans were scattered on the floor, along with boxes of matches, lighters, and other fire-starting mechanisms.
Seager radioed the others to report what they found while Kelly moved further into the hotel room. He knew PD would come and process the room and hopefully give them an ID on this guy, but Kelly was more interested in trying to figure out this guy’s next target.
As Kelly approached the back of the room, a sudden rush of movement caught his eye. A door on the side of the room burst open and a man rushed towards Kelly. There was a quick fight, but Kelly was soon overpowered. Before he even knew what was happening, Kelly was crashing through the back window and falling to the ground below.
Pain engulfed Kelly’s body as he hit the cracked asphalt below. His vision blurred and he fought to stay conscious but he was in agony. Through the ringing in his ears, Kelly heard yelling and thundering footsteps growing louder as they came closer.
Kelly’s last thought, before he gave into the overwhelming darkness, was the arsonist’s face and the overwhelming knowledge that Kelly had recognized him.
… … …
It was a slow night at Molly’s, just the 51 crew and a few regulars in the bar. Stella was behind the bar and had just served Violet and Carver another round of drinks when her phone rang. She didn’t recognize the number, which normally meant she wouldn’t answer, but there was a gnawing feeling in her gut that told her to answer it.
“Hello?”
Stella listened for a minute, her eyes growing wider and wider as each second passed. “Is he okay?!”
After another minute Stella threw her dish towel on the counter, grabbed her keys, and started rushing towards the door. “I’ll be right there!”
“Kidd, hey,” Herrmann said, grabbing her arm gently before she made it around the bar. “What’s going on?”
“That was Seager. The serial arsonist OFI was looking for? He just threw Kelly out of a second-story window.” Stella looked at Herrmann and noticed she had the attention of everyone else from 51. “I need to get to Med.”
… … …
It took about an hour for all of the team from 51 to make it to the hospital, where they joined Stella and the OFI team in the waiting room. Apart from the initial update Seager and Van Meter had been able to give Stella when she arrived, they hadn’t heard anything else about Kelly’s condition.
It was another 30 minutes before Dr. Ripley came into the ED with an update.
“Lieutenant Severide is going to be fine,” he shared. He gave the group a moment to soak the news in, knowing the group in front of him cared greatly for his patient. “He’s got a pretty bad concussion, some broken ribs and a broken shoulder from the fall, but those should heal up just fine in a few months.”
“Our biggest concern is the fractures on the C5 and C6 vertebrae.”
“He broke his neck?!” Stella cried, the shock and fear making her voice louder than she intended.
“He did,” Dr. Ripley confirmed. “But ortho and neurology have both been in to see him. He’ll be in a neck brace while the fractures heal but as of now, there’s no need for surgical intervention. Neuro has also ruled out any deficits and paralysis. As he heals, Lieutenant Severide might experience some weakness and nerve pain but we’ll get him a referral to physical therapy for the rehab process.”
“We’ll be keeping Severide overnight to monitor his concussion and get a handle on his pain. He’s being moved to a room now and then you guys are good to go see him.”
“Thank you, Dr. Ripley.” Stella said, sincerely.
Dr. Ripley nodded and headed back into the ED. The waiting group of firefighters and arson investigators all relished in the relief that Kelly would (eventually) be fine.
“That Severide luck strikes again,” Capp murmured.
“What luck is that Capp?” Cruz asked. “The bad luck that keeps getting him hurt or the good luck that has him surviving?”
“Uhh, both?”
Stella snorted and that helped break any remaining tension in the waiting room. Kelly Severide was a lucky guy…whether it was good luck or bad seemed to change in the blink of an eye.
… … …
Kelly Severide was miserable. The neck brace and sling were uncomfortable, his entire body hurt, and no amount of pain medication could completely get rid of the throbbing ache in his head.
Seeing the team from 51 had been nice. Kelly had missed seeing everyone and while he liked the OFI team, they weren’t his team. They kept the visit short since visiting hours were almost over but they were all just happy to see Kelly awake and relatively okay.
When just Stella and Boden were left in the room with Kelly, Seager and Van Meter entered.
“Severide, how are you feeling?” Van Meter asked as he came to a stop at the foot of Kelly’s bed.
Kelly shrugged (or tried to) his good shoulder. “Not my first time going out a window.”
“Hopefully it’s your last,” Stella said, fixing him with a glare. “Take the stairs next time, hmm?”
“Hopefully there won’t be a next time.”
“The arsonist you were chasing,” Boden started. “Did you get him?”
“We did,” Van Meter answered. “PD is holding him at the precinct but he’s not talking yet.”
“Who is he?” Stella asked.
Before Van Meter could answer, Kelly jumped in. “Martin Carlisle.”
“That’s right,” Van Meter confirmed, raising an eyebrow at Kelly. “How’d you know that?”
“I met him in Alabama. He was an arson investigator from California, I think? He ended up getting sent home early for spouting all this crazy rhetoric. He presented a few times and had the most outlandish takes. Every time he got correct or even questioned he’d get mad and just spew even more nonsense. He got hostile so they sent him home.” Kelly explained. “No one knows for sure what happened to him after he got sent home but rumor was that he got fired.”
“Any idea what brought him to Chicago?” Seager asked.
“None,” Kelly mumbled. “But Carlisle did get into with me and a few others as he left. I’d check and see if there were any suspicious fires in Houston, Atlanta, and Seattle before he came here.”
“You think he’s done this before?”
“Maybe? I wouldn’t put it past him.”
Van Meter nodded and finished jotting something down in his notebook. “We’ll look into it, thanks Severide.”
“Rest up,” Seager added. “The CFD needs you.”
Seager and Van Meter left after that, heading back to OFI to look into the information Kelly had given them.
Boden stayed with Kelly and Stella for a little while longer before heading out himself. He had things to handle on his end and he had some calls to make: he wanted to find our more about this Carlisle guy.
Once they were alone, Stella ran her fingers through Kelly’s hair. He’d gotten quiet since Van Meter and Seager left and Stella knew he was lost in his thoughts. “You okay?”
“Yeah,” Kelly moved his eyes to look at Stella. “It’s just a lot.”
“You know this isn’t your fault, right? Whatever choices this guy made, the destruction he caused, that’s all on him.”
“I know.”
And Kelly did know. This wasn’t the first time he’d heard of an arsonist making things personal like this. Hell, thanks to Hadley, this wasn’t even the first time he’d been on an arsonist’s hit list. Their actions were completely their own but innocent people had been injured, good firefighters had been killed, his wife and her team had almost died. The fact that Carlisle could’ve done all of this as some sort of revenge plot against him made the guilt feel worse than the broken neck.
“It still sucks though.”
“Yeah, it does.”
Stella knew her husband well. If Carlisle had done all of this to get back at Kelly, she knew he’d carry the guilt with him for a long time. He wouldn’t be carrying it alone though; she’d be there, helping him carry it, every step of the way.

A confession and a comment.
Confession: I fully believe Chang Feng Du is a superior drama to The Longest Promise but I like The Longest Promise more and am miles more emotionally invested in it. With CFD it’s basically the same as with the novel - I liked the beginning, then got hugely invested in the arc of the Gu family downfall and the aftermath and then just have no emotional investment or even much interest afterwards with a brief exception for city battle and Ye Yun’s revenge while appreciating it’s very well done. TLP meanwhile has a story whose pace is uneven and a plethora of supporting characters that evoke irritation and is full of cliches of the xianxia genre but it doesn’t matter - emotionally it has me by the throat and I just invest and invest and invest.
Comment: I really think fandom spaces would be less terrifying if people were willing to separate quality from emotional appeal. By that I mean being able to say “X is better quality but Y appeals to me more” and not tie personal appeal of a narrative to arguing that it is therefore objectively the best. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t. It’s OK to like something while acknowledging it’s not perfect and it’s OK to not care for something well made without trying to justify it by digging for flaws or trying to label it as problematic.

*I was discharged from iop on Thursday. On documents it says I discharged ‘against treatment advice’ but it was actually a mutually agreed upon decision. Both my treatment team and myself agreed this treatment program had ran its course and I wasn’t getting much out of it anymore. Additionally work and treatment were interfering with each other to the point I was failing at both. And that was the trigger for me deciding to leave iop.
*Wednesday I had so much work to do including 2 reports due at 5pm. I did everything in power to turn the reports in on time and not miss any of iop, I managed to turn the reports in because my supervisor told me that she could not allow me to turn them in later in the evening. But that led to me coming into treatment 30mins late.🙁 I had signed an attendance contract so I knew I was in trouble.
*There was a conversation between myself, my therapist, and the program director. It seemed almost as if they had given me so much leniency and flexibility that there really wasn’t much else to say or do about it. It was a short discussion. They told me I needed to make a decision about what I was going to prioritize and what do I want out of treatment if I chose to stay. I thought really hard about and came to the conclusion I was only continuing to attend treatment because I feel attached to the staff and I wanted/needed their support. I chose to be discharged. Thursday, the next day, was my last day. I came to sign discharge paperwork and say goodbye to everyone. I cried a lot. The program director gave me a hug and I really, really needed that. She knows I have become attached to her and she said some really comforting things that helped.
It was hard to walk out those does one last time. It was like the very end of a long, treacherous journey. It’s been hard to think about. It’s over. A process that took almost a year is over. It was life changing. I’m feeling a lot of grief and sadness about leaving CFD and the staff I have become attached to. How do I just leave? How is it over just like that? It was such a huge exhausting battle to be admitted to treatment but then it’s over in less than 24hrs. It happened so suddenly and so quickly. It hurts to think about the way things were before I went to treatment. I never want to be back in that state of mind or that physical state ever again. But I am still having a hard leaving the staff behind. Attachment is so, so painful.
*I am still planning on doing Equip. It’s fully virtual and they will work around your schedule which is really helpful for me. I will be starting with them on either Feb. 5th or Feb. 12th. (They only do admits on Monday’s) So these next few weeks I will be in a holding pattern. I’m just waiting to start at Equip. I’m grateful and relieved that I have the option of doing Equip after leaving CFD. I’m not doing all that great at the moment but I am miles away from the way things were on admission day. It’s humbling, terrifying, and incredibly sad. I don’t want things to be that way again.
