From pandemic-related travel restrictions to extreme weather events, Canada's travel industry has navigated an unprecedented amount of uncertainty of late. And now, just as travel demand has returned to its 2019 level, airlines are navigating their next patch of turbulence: a lack of qualified pilots.
According to Transport Canada, roughly 1,100 pilot licenses were issued. When complemented by foreign-trained pilots, that was generally more than enough to satisfy the needs of carriers as large as WestJet and Air Canada, all the way down to regional, charter, and cargo airlines.
However, as demand for flying fell in 2020, so did the number of new pilots who received their licenses. According to government data, fewer than 500 licenses were awarded in 2020, fell to less than 300 in 2021 and just 238 last year.
The department told CBC News that while labour shortages in the airline sector have been "identified as a priority area for action," there are no current plans to loosen regulations. But the agency says it's doing what it can to "increase the competitiveness of the Canadian flight training industry as well as improve the viability of aviation careers to address any shortages."
Whatever changes come will do little to help anyone in the short term, and travellers are already seeing the impact of the industry's current labour crunch. Staff shortages were a factor in charter airline Sunwing's cancellation of 67 flights over the last two weeks of December, along with extreme weather.
Salaries for experienced pilots generally go up faster and higher at the airlines than at most others, and they are typically able to take their pick among those available. That causes shortages just about everywhere else.
The head of the Air Transport Association of Canada says it's been brewing for many years, even before the pandemic. Getting a commercial license is the last step in a multi-year process of becoming a pilot, a journey that can cost tens of thousands of dollars and take years.
In Canada, for many, that journey ends with a dream job at either WestJet or Air Canada. Because of the expense and time commitment of training a new pilot, the airlines often hire top staff from smaller carriers instead of methodically developing their own.
Canada's two biggest airlines told CBC News in emailed statements that while there is indeed a higher-than-normal demand for pilots right now, both are managing to meet their needs.
That's not the case for everyone else. Small airlines often have so few pilots on staff that it doesn't take the loss of very many to stop planes from flying. In the fall, Sunwing applied to bring in more than 60 temporary foreign workers to meet the demand for pilots, but that application was rejected, which exacerbated the chaos seen at the end of 2022. The airline has since cancelled almost all flights out of Saskatchewan and most out of Manitoba for the rest of the winter travel season.
It's not just the big boys gobbling up all the qualified pilots, either. Many simply left the profession during the pandemic. Many pilots tried to wait out furloughs and layoffs at airlines large and small, but many simply moved on, he told CBC News in an interview.
For the pilots who are leaving, headhunting is the new normal. He says he hears from desperate airlines every day because they either can't find the staff or just lost another one. "It's for pilots, unfortunately, to work there for six months, then get a surprise interview that they didn't expect to get, and then they're gone," he said.
One person hoping to meet that challenge is Zona Savic, a soon-to-be graduate of one of Canada's premier aviation schools, Seneca College in Peterborough, Ont. While studying engineering, she joined the Air Cadets in high school and was quickly bitten by the aviation bug.
She's on track to get her pilot's license soon, and while she may do additional training to become an instructor herself, she says it's a load off her mind to know that she won't have to worry about finding a job.
And even better for the industry, she has no qualms about working her way up at smaller carriers that fly niche, remote routes.

President Buhari should respect NASS resolution and reinstate our children back to NDA – Maradin Daura -NigPilot
Tumblr media
The National Assembly gave its resolution in favor of the dismissed Cadets to be reinstated; what has been the response from the NDA and Ministry of Defence? Unfortunately, a resolution has been given by the National Assembly for almost seven months now and nothing has been done to implement it. My surprise is that this is a law-making institution, empowered by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and it should be respected. The law said that when you are cheated, you should go to either the court or the National Assembly to make your complaints known so that you can get justice and that was what we did. We followed up on our case through the honorable members of the National Assembly. They went through the matter and found the NDA guilty of wrongly dismissing our children. If not because our children are well brought up, by now, only God knows what they would have become. You can imagine whereby you take your children through nursery schools, primary, military schools, and the NDA, and then because of hatred from somebody, they were dismissed after convocation and POP. After POP, my son was relegated, which is against the NDA 2018 handbook. How can a cadet be convocated by the Vice President of Nigeria and you allowed him to go for POP? Then you now called him, because he did a party to thank Allah for allowing him to graduate from the NDA. That was his offense. As a result, the Deputy Commandant, Air Vice Marshall Kaita, went against the 2018 handbook and relegated them. They were relegated to go back to school and do what? What were the findings of the National Assembly before they gave the resolution to favor the cadets? The National Assembly knew why my son and 52 other cadets were wrongly dismissed. They were not found guilty of anything incriminating in the case. The only reason the Commandant gave was that my son had ten entries, and the lawmakers asked him what he did for all the offenses. Hon. Kalu from Delta state read the 2018 handbook, the entries found against my son, fell on minor offenses according to the handbook, which was seven minor offenses. So, from the handbook, two offenses make one major offense, and when you put all the seven together, his offenses are three and a half entries, not ten entries. The point here is this: if Boko Haram can be forgiven and given amnesty, what about the innocent children that were not criminals in any way? You can imagine, from 2019 till today, I wrote a petition, but nothing happened to the petition. If the country is going according to the law, how can somebody, an outsider, write a petition against military officers, and nothing happened? My petition was with all the service chiefs, including this current Minister of Defence. If I was lying, they should have called me and asked. Even the National Assembly members asked them that when I wrote a petition what did the NDA do about it? They did not respond. That was why after they demised our children we said we are not going anywhere. I spoke to my lawyer and he advised us to take the matter to the National Assembly for them to protect our interests from the injustice done to our children. The National Assembly followed up the case from day one to the end, and they found out that 15 cadets out of 52 cadets that were dismissed, successfully convocated and passed out according to the NDA documents on the ground, that was why letters were written to the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation by the National Assembly to notify him of their resolution so that the 15 cadets would be immediately reinstated. The document stated that the 15 cadets have successfully convocated, got their results, and successfully participated in the Oath Passing Out Parade. Also, during the hearing, the Commandant, Major General Sarham could not produce any evidence at the National Assembly that my son granted an interview that went against the Military Acts, which he is being accused of, rather, they only accused him verbally. But, the evidence at hand showed on video where my son was thanking Almighty Allah for the successful passing out from the NDA. After the resolution by the National Assembly, have you and other parents made attempts to reach out to the Minister of Defence and Chief of Defense Staff in respect to comply with the resolution?  We are citizens of Nigeria and we are following the rules and regulations of Nigeria. We respect the law that was why we went to the National Assembly. After the resolution was broadcast in all the National Television stations in Nigeria and Newspapers published it, the National Assembly wrote a letter to the Chief of Defense Staff, the Minister of Defense, and the SGF. We have the acknowledgment copies of the letters which we took to our lawyer, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. He then wrote letters of a reminder after two months to the Chief of Defense Staff, the Minister of Defence, and the Chief of Army Staff and the late Chief of Army Staff was the only person that responded to the letter immediately. What did your son tell you was his offense before he and other cadets were dismissed? He said that after his convocation and POP, they called him that organized a party and granted an interview, so he was invited to the Adjutant office. From the Adjutant's office, he was taken straight to the cell and locked up for six days for an offense that he was not aware of, but was only told he conducted an interview, in which he said he appreciated God for the successful completion of NDA without any problem. However, in the court of law, no law says you should lock somebody for more than 24hours without trial. After that, the Deputy Commandant relegated him when he had already passed out, which violated the 2018 handbook that said that the Deputy Commandant has no right to relegate any cadets. But, in his case, he was not allowed to speak when he was invited to the Deputy Commandant's office, they just relegated him and sent him back to school, after he made 2.2 in his grade in NDA. However, it was later the new Commandant dismissed him along with the 52 other cadets without asking any questions. Since the resolution of the National Assembly to reinstate the dismissed cadets has not been implemented, what is your next action? We have channeled our case to the Federal High Court. We have filed a case against the Nigeria Military. But, we are going ahead of that because, if they ignore the National Assembly and the Federal High Court of Nigeria, we have sent some of our evidence to the international court of law through our contact, in case they ignore any resolution by the Federal High Court of Nigeria. If we do not get justice from the people who ignored the law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we know our way to the International Court of Law, the international law which they must obey immediately when they pass their resolution. So, if we get justice again and they refuse to comply because we believe the Federal High Court will give us justice since we already have justice from the National Assembly. If they ignore the two justices we have, we will go there to file our complaints. We will not allow this injustice to go free against our children. The Commandant went to the National Assembly and said that our children filed out and not passed out. What is passing out and what is filing out? We have the video of the Commandant who passed out our children, when he said that the Army spent five years, Air force and the Navy spent four years in NDA, then they will proceed to Port Harcourt, while the Airforce will go to Airforce base in Kaduna. We also have the video of 2019, when the Commandant, Major General Oyebande, made this speech at the parade ground, and the CBC said that three Awards would be given to the best passing out cadets, which were the Army, Air force, and Navy. So, where did the former Commandant get the information that our children did not pass out, that they filed out?  You know that a cadet has ten entries and you allowed him to convocated in front of the vice president of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, and you allowed them to go to the parade ground to participate in all the passing out activities. That is why God will grant us justice in favor of our children. What is your call on President Buhari in respect to the quest for reinstating the dismissed cadets? I totally believe that Buhari is a just person and that is why I am appealing to him to intervene in this matter. I also believe in our National Assembly, that was why we went to them. Since the honorable members of the National Assembly who are from different states of Nigeria judged the case, in which they set up a committee to investigate the matter after the petition committee was initially set up by the House. The committee was given the mandate to go round and ensure that proper investigation was done in regards to the allegation against the dismissed children. From the investigation conducted by the lawmakers, they discovered that the children were wrongly dismissed. So, we are appealing to President Buhari to urgently intervene in this matter. We do not want a situation whereby our children who are getting more matured on daily basis, make wrong decisions in the future. The President has lost sleep because of the insecurity situation in the country, so we must do what we can to avert more challenges in the future. If Boko Haram slaughtered innocent people can be forgiven by the same Military, which I believe the Minister is aware of, what is stopping them from reinstating our children who have not committed any criminal offense and have been given special Military training for good five and four years? In all the entries against the cadets, there was no place where any of the cadets were tried. What they did to the children was that they were in the parade ground, and they told them that they will have an interview with the Commandant the next day. But, the Military Act says that whatever you are applying to Army or cadet, it has to go through Battalion Adjutant, then CBC to Deputy Commandant, then Commandant Correction. All that protocol acts from the Military were not followed, they just told the children that they had an interview with the Commandant, Major General Sarham, the following day. When they met the Commandant the following morning, he came out with the other officers and they gave them papers and told them that they were dismissed. One funny thing they did was that when they dismissed them, they were handcuffed, paraded, and locked up in the cell for 36 hours without food and water, like ordinary criminals. We have the video where they were handcuffed and locked in the cell. What kind of country are we in? If President Buhari is aware of this, he will not allow this injustice to happen, because that was why we voted for this government. QUOTE The President has lost sleep because of the insecurity situation in the country, so we must do what we can to avert more challenges in the future.   FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY. ROUNDBALL KINGPINS OF SOUTHEAST ASIA
Tumblr media
The Philippines, through its Gilas Pilipinas Team B (that’s what we want to call it to distinguish it from our real senior team), reasserted its supremacy in Southeast Asian basketball with its resounding 94-55 victory over Indonesia in the finals Sunday night, August 26.  With that victory, Filipinos can rest assured that nobody else in the region can lay claim as the top power in the sport, no matter the dolorous performance of Filipino athletes in general in this year’s SEA Games in Malaysia where they’re bound to do even worse, in terms of gold-medal count, than they did two years ago in Singapore and in 2013 in Myanmar.
Despite uneasy wins over Thailand in group play and Singapore in the semifinals, the Filipino basketeers proved to all and sundry that the region still has a long way to go to catch up with them in the sport that’s closest to the Filipinos’ hearts.  After all, how do you classify a 12th straight gold medal and 17th in 19 stagings of the event overall?
Of course, this latest success is due to the perseverance and fine play of our young nationals, most of whom came from the Gilas cadets pool that has been formed precisely to serve as source of talent that will represent the country in competitions outside the FIBA Asia Cup – where we unfortunately finished a poor seventh just before the SEA Games – the FIBA World Cup and the Olympics, where we have not played at all for all of 45 years now (hey, have you been born when that happened?).
As a recap of the Philippines’ latest SEA Games basketball victory, we tried to rate the individual performances of our 12-man team during its five-game unbeaten run.  Below are our individual ratings of the players, in alphabetical order:
Baser Amer (Grade: C+) – One of two main ballhandlers for the Gilas squad along with Kiefer Ravena, Amer played just four games (he sat out the Myanmar game due to a thigh injury) and was thrown out of one, but he helped provide stability to the team’s offense, setting the plays and averaging 7.0 points during the tournament.
Carl Bryan Cruz (Grade: C) – CBC, as broadcasters call him, missed the nationals’ first game against Thailand where he could have helped as he had to come from Lebanon where he played with the senior team, but he did help when he finally joined the squad, averaging 5.5 points in four games while providing strong defense.
Kevin Ferrer (Grade: C) – The former Sto. Tomas standout did not quite stand out in the games here, but he did provide an outside threat and was productive enough when he was on the floor, turning in a scoring norm of 5.2 points in five games.
Raymar Jose (Grade: B) – The 6-foot-4 Jose provided some firepower inside for Gilas Pilipinas as he normed 8.8 points and provided the third spoke in the team’s three-headed big-man frontline that also included Troy Rosario and Christian Standhardinger.  The PBA D-League Foundation Cup MVP did show some steady hand complementing the team’s top two bigs.
Kobe Paras (Grade: A) – Kobe was the revelation on the national squad, averaging a team-third-best 11.4 points during the tournament and providing the games some of its biggest highlights with his slam dunks and tremendous jumping ability.  A previously immature operator on the court, Paras showed a growing maturity and savvy, as witness the gold-medal game against Indonesia where he went 6-for-6 from the floor en route to 14 points, against Malaysia where he turned in 16 points and eight rebounds, and against Myanmar where he collected 20 points, eight rebounds, seven steals, four assists and four blocks.  This 6-foot-6 19-year-old did show everybody the potential he has with his athleticism, deft touch and intensity.
Bobby Parks Jr. (Grade: B+) – The defensive stalwart of the nationals.  Parks might have averaged just 5.8 points but he had to sacrifice his offense to serve as his team’s top stopper on the other end, serving as the neutralizer to Thailand’s vaunted naturalized import Tyler Lamb, a star on the ASEAN Basketball League champion Hong Kong ELL team whom he limited to 17 points on 6-of-17 shooting from the floor in the Philippines’ toughest game in the tournament.  Without Parks’ defensive work, the nationals would have lost right in their first game and the later draws would have been different.
Von Pessumal (Grade: C) – The son of our eye doctor Chandru, Von showed flashes of his well-known marksmanship in his limited time on the court, which was reflected on his 4.4-point scoring average. Von though showed the skills he possessed to earn a slot on the squad, including an accurate outside shot, a strong defense and good passing skills.
Kiefer Ravena  (Grade: B+) – Kiefer, the son of former PBA star Bong and former volleyball star Mozzy (a kumare), did not quite get into a groove with his offense but he did serve as the team’s floor leader and playmaker, norming 7.8 points that was just sixth on the squad.  No matter, Kiefer knew he had to sacrifice part of his game for the team to win the title, and he did just that to show the traits of a good leader.
Troy Rosario (Grade: A) – One of the more experienced players in the Gilas program, Rosario did live up to his stature with a scoring norm of 12.8 points, which was second on the squad, and being one of its top two rebounders along with Standhardinger.  Rosario was Gilas’ top scorer and rebounder in its two toughest games against Thailand and Singapore, and if that doesn’t tell you his importance to the championship run, nothing else will.
Christian Standhardinger (Grade: A) – The next most important player in the Gilas program after June Mar Fajardo if one is to base it on production so far, Standhardinger came straight from the FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon and promptly showed he is a leader for this team, emerging as its top scorer with a 13.8 average as well as leading rebounder, grabbing 18 boards on top of 18 points, both team highs, in that important win over Malaysia alone.  We were tempted to give the 6-8 Christian an A+ if not for his woeful free-throw shooting in the tournament, which hovered in the 50-percent range and where, honestly, we think he’s better.
Mike Tolomia (Grade: A) – Tolomia came off the bench most of the time but without his shotmaking and playmaking, it’s doubtful if Gilas could have fulfilled its mission.  A better version of his elder brother, former PBA campaigner Chester, Tolomia topscored in the championship game against Indonesia with 20 points, including five of eight three-point shots, and also helped spark a crucial run against Singapore in the semifinals to leave his imprint on the nationals’ gold-medal run.  He was one of four nationals who normed in double figures in scoring with 11.2 points.
Almond Vosotros (Grade: C) – Perhaps the least heralded among the nationals in Malaysia despite a stellar collegiate career, Vosotros still did his part in the successful campaign, despite a 2.8-point scoring norm that was the result mostly of minimal playing time with Tolomia, Ravena and Amer playing ahead of him in the rotation.  No disgrace here though, as is true with all 12 players that kept Philippine basketball supremacy in the region. – Bert A.
