CAS Dismisses ROC Appeal in 2022 Olympic Team Event Case; Canadian Appeal Pending

CAS Media Release

Lausanne, 25 July 2024 – The CAS Panel in charge of the appeals filed by the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) (CAS 2024/A/10355), the Figure Skating Federation of Russia (CAS 2024/A/10360), and Russian skaters Aleksandr Galliamov, Nikita Katsalapov, Mark Kondratiuk, Anastasia Mishina, Victoria Sinitsina and Kamila Valieva (CAS 2024/A/10356) (collectively, the Appellants) against the re-ranking decision announced by the International Skating Union (ISU) on 30 January 2024 (the Challenged Decision) in relation to the final standings for the Team Event in figure skating at the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 has issued its decision: the appeals are dismissed. The Appellants had sought a ruling from CAS re-ranking the figure skating Team Event and awarding the gold medal to the ROC. Following the hearing that took place on 12 June 2024, the Panel deliberated and concluded that the results of Ms Valieva in the Olympic Figure Skating Team Event were correctly disqualified in the Challenged Decision, and that the ROC Skating Team could not be awarded the gold medal. Consequently, the above-mentioned appeals are dismissed. The Panel issued the Operative Part of the Arbitral Award. The full award, with the grounds for the Panel’s decision, will be issued as soon as possible. The second CAS Panel, different from the first, constituted to resolve the related, but separate, appeal (CAS 2024/A/10354) filed by Canadian skaters Madeline Schizas, Piper Gilles, Paul Poirier, Kirsten Moore-Towers, Michael Marinaro, Eric Radford, Vanessa James and Roman Sadovsky, together with, Skate Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) (collectively, the Canadian Appellants), held a hearing at the CAS headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland on 22 July 2024. The Canadian Appellants also seek a ruling from CAS re-ranking the figure skating Team Event, as follows: United States of America (Gold); Japan (Silver); Canada (Bronze). The second CAS Panel is now deliberating. It is not possible to indicate at this time when the second Panel’s decision will be issued.

Following the CAS decision on ROC’s appeal, the IOC stated that they would work with the ISU and US/Japanese Olympic Committees to hold a medal ceremony at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

IOC STATEMENT ON CAS DECISION: This decision comes just in time to still be able to make the medal allocation for gold and silver possible during the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The IOC will now work with the @ISU_Figure, USOPC and the JOC to bring the athletes to Paris in order to hold the ceremony here in the Champions Park based on the amended results from the ISU. We are glad that this opportunity can be offered to the athletes and teams who, unfortunately, had to wait for a very long time for their medals due to the ongoing legal case.

Christine Brennan of USA Today Sports reports that the medal ceremony is planned for August 7, although this is yet to be confirmed with the IOC.

Hello!

We are two trans people living in Scotland, both working as autism specialised carers within an adolescent household care home environment. Our job pays pitiful wages for what is expected of us, but we are deeply passionate about care.

Around Christmas of 2022, Jay was kicked out of his house by his parents with nothing except what he could carry. This was due to his transgender identity.

As a result he had to move in before we were fully prepared for this. He was also unable to secure a job until September of last year. Thanks to low wages and the increasing cost of living, we amassed sizeable debts across several areas.

As a result of this we are often forced to rely on friends to help us cover groceries or other daily expenses, whilst the majority of our wages go on bills and paying (primarily interest) off debts.

With this support, we would be able to clear our debts and put ourselves back to square one finally. By paying off everything we would be saving £322.50 a month, with that extra money we could stop relying on other people and working ourselves into the ground to survive.

Any help would be massively appreciated!

ON THE USA AND JAPAN TEAM MEDALS:

This will be a very brief post, since what I have to say on the topic is very short.

I'm so glad to see the USA and Japan receive their rightful team medals this week in Paris, since it's been a long two years coming. My only concern is that the Canadian appeal was dismissed just days before this was scheduled to happen. I think it's unfair in the first place to present medals when the Canadian team had an ongoing, unresolved appeal, as it would've been nice to have the whole podium presented together. I also feel that the event already being scheduled was among the reasons that the appeal was so quick to be dismissed. The Canadian team were not invited to Paris, and it seemed like everyone involved (CAS) wanted this whole situation over and done with, to brush under the rug as quickly as possible. If Canada won their appeal, the medal ceremony would either have to have been postponed, or another one would have to be scheduled at a time and place where the Canadians could be invited to hand them their medals. It was clear that CAS didn't really want it to drag on any longer, and swept aside the appeal despite there being genuine, plausible grounds for the reevaluation of the scores, since without Kamila's score, Canada should have moved to bronze as their female competitor should have moved up the table and been allocated more points. They also dismissed ROC's appeal though, so I can't confidently say that the result of the Canadian appeal was entirely due to CAS/RUS collusion/corruption. I think, on a larger scale, the scandal had shed such a negative light over the sport, and all the major bodies wanted that shadow gone as quickly as possible, regardless of whether the athletes involved were paid their dues and given the correct medals.

There's not much that can be done now, and the Russians were also not invited to Paris to receive bronze and likely won't ever receive those bronze medals the final results say they have (per CAS) as they continue to parade their athletes around the country as "Our true olympic champions". Russia, even if invited, will not accept bronze.

In short, I think this situation has boiled down to: "There is no 2022 Team bronze medal, and we will act accordingly."

Pretty disappointing but what more can we expect? I think many saw this a mile off when the CAS hearing took 2 years to be resolved.

2022 has been a year of overdue personal development but I have struggled to find the motivation to draw while I’m stressed. As a result I often have to force myself to draw and don’t enjoy the process as much. I’m not sure how I’ll improve on that next year but I’ll try!

Two years post finale and the fandom’s still here and we have more Supernatural to look forward to in 2023 (fingers crossed for a second season of The Winchesters and some more hints of or even an announcement of a finale fix it ;3)!

"Cahahas!" Dean chuckled heartily, scrunching his shoulders up to protect his neck from the offending feathers. "Stohohop!"

"It's endearing, why would I stop?" Cas smiled in delight, fluttering his wings around the back of Dean's ears.

"No!"

It had been like this for almost half an hour. Cas - the all powerful angel he was - effortlessly holding Dean in his arms so he couldn't escape, while using his other appendages to softly tickle around the man's collar. A common occurrence between the two, with one being much more willing to admit just how much they love it.

"Cahas plehease I can't!" Dean begged as the feathers somehow dragged against a particularly sensitive part of his jawbone. "This ihihis embarrahasing!"

Cas smirked amusedly. "I think embarrassment isn't the best word to describe how you feel about this."

"Whahat?"

"I know you like this." He smirked, noting the slight haze of red flushing onto Dean's cheeks.

"Let mehehe go!" The poor man giggled, managing to wriggle an arm free from Cas's angelic bear hug.

That hand would prove to be a world of problems for Cas.

In his struggle, Dean had latched on to the tough cartilage at the base of Cas's wings. As he clawed into the tissue, the angel let out a shriek and stumbled back away from Dean.

"What was that?" Dean grinned, already knowing exactly what had happened.

"N-nothing Dean, nothing you need to worry about." Cas's eyes were wide with nervous energy.

"Oh I'm not worried Angel."

With a smirk, Dean barreled towards Cas. The two engaged in a ridiculous chase of cat and mouse, Dean trying to grab at any part of the plumage that was always just out of reach.

"Dean please this is ridICULOUS!" Cas screeched as somehow Dean got a hold of him.

Initially Dean freaked, worried he had somehow hurt the angel, but as Cas's face morphed into a giggly blush he knew that pain was nowhere near what made the sound.

"TIcklish wings, huh?" Dean teased, softly combing his hands through the feathers. "Never would have guessed that."

"Dehehean please no!" Cas shivered, his feathers rippling like hairs standing on end each time Dean's fingers passed.

"Oh but Dean please yes!" The hunter smirked, delving deeper into the plumage and beginning to vibrate his hands against the bones connecting his wing joints.

Cas went hysterical. Thrashing and begging and laughing uncontrollably, letting out the occasional scream when Dean somehow found a spot even worse than before. Right where the two thickest wing joint connected lay a perfectly horrible spot for Dean to exploit. Comparable to a human armpit, the sensitive hollow where stretchy skin gave way to the even more ticklish nerve endings underneath immediately became Dean's favourite spot to torture.

"DEHEHEHEHAHAHAHAN!" Cas screamed, wingly flapping wildly to the point where if Dean wasn't careful he could be catapulted to the other side of the room. Dean could tell Cas could only handle this for a few moments more, so he made the most of what little time he had left.

"Tickle tickle Cas..." He teased, knowing those words would turn the angel into a puddle of giggly goop.

"SHUHUHUT UHUHUHUHAHAHA!" Cas tried to finish, but was cut off my his own uncontrollable laughter.

Finally, once Dean decided Cas may be on the verge of death, he eased off. Slowly tracing his hands down the bones in Cas's wings - which resulted in a sound that can only be described as chirping.

"Aw this ihis adorable!" The hunter said with a laugh, partly from the reactions of the normally stone-faced angel but partly cause Cas's feathers were (surprisingly) really damn tickly on his hands.

But that could be an investigation for another day, for there was nothing he couldn't take to tickle his best friend to bits.

The Dumbest Scientific Report I’ve Ever Written

How Long Would It Take to Post the Entirety of Supernatural (2005) to Tumblr if You Posted One Screenshot of Every Frame Every Day?

Hypothesis

If one were to post one frame of Supernatural (2005) every day to a Tumblr account, starting on the day I decided to make this dumbass write-up (September 27, 2022), the entire show would be posted far enough in the future that the English language could feasibly not be commonly spoken anymore, therefore making it likely that the nuances of the English language’s word “love” may have been lost to time. Assuming this hypothetical Tumblr account would be the last remaining proof of the show’s existence, this could potentially lead to discourse over whether Cas’ confession was romantic or platonic that would persist far, far into the future.

Methods

Assumption: Supernatural is filmed at 30 fps

Total Supernatural runtime: 14,726 mins

^calculated using IMDB episode length estimates

14,726 mins * 60 sec/min = 883,560 seconds

883,560 seconds * 30 frames/second = 26,506,800 frames

Summary of Results

If someone were to post one frame of Supernatural (2005) every day, starting on September 27, 2022, it would take them over seventy-two thousand years to post the entire show. The final frame would be posted on November 22 in the year 74595, presumably from the queue function rather than by the user themself because they would presumably be dead by then. Based on human history, I believe this is a large enough span of time for the English language to fall out of common use, and therefore make my hypothesis (that 15x18 confession discourse could persist past the English language’s lifespan) plausible. 

While exploring the titular question of this report, I decided to determine whether the same goal could be achieved if the hypothetical Tumblr user in question were to achieve Tumblr’s post limit (250 posts) every day, with each post containing one single frame of the show. Under this condition, the task of posting all of Supernatural would only take just over 290 years, and would end on January 12, 2313. While this is certainly long enough of a time span for the user to die and have to rely on the queue function to achieve their goal, I do not believe this would be enough time for the English language to be largely forgotten. It would, however, still be a comical amount of time for Supernatural discourse to be happening, so I think this condition adheres to the spirit of my hypothesis, if not its letter.

Bonus Discussion

As I said in the Methods section, I had to calculate the estimated run time of the show by going on IMDB, sorting by increasing runtime, and counting the number of episodes that had certain runtimes. From that data I created this plot:

from which we can glean some information. Notably, the most common runtime for Supernatural episodes by far is 42 minutes, with a whopping 133 out of 327 episodes (40.7%). The least common runtimes out of runtimes that appear are 48, 49, 47, and 40 minutes in order from least to most common. An interesting fact I discovered is the fact that though the average length of a Supernatural episode is, in fact, 45 minutes, IMBD does not actually list a single episode with an estimated runtime of 45 minutes (or 46, for that matter). I was also genuinely surprised that some episodes ran for a full hour of total runtime. Also, while the myth that the show’s finale (Carry On 🤢) is in the 30s range was proven false, it is in fact on the short side at the most common runtime of 42 minutes.

Further analysis with this data could include breaking down average runtimes by seasons, contributors, presence of certain characters, or by episode “type” (season premiers/finales, MOTW vs. plotline, etc). There is also room for error, as the IMDB runtimes are just estimates, and the assumption of 30 fps was very cursorily researched.

Activity description

This is the third time Iranian Combinatorics Olympiad, also known as the ICO, is being organized, and it is the first time that my country, Bosnia and Herzegovina, is one of the participants. Last year, 27 countries from all over the world took part in this international event, each with its representative teams for both categories. Final number of the participaring country this year has not been published yet, but it is expected to be greater than last year's one, as  there are countries who have joined for the first time, like Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this competition, there are two categories - junior and senior contestants. Junior teams involve students of younger grades, and their test can be considered quite simple, as groups of up to three members have two hours to solve 15 problems. On the other hand, seniors, such as myself, also working in teams of up to three people, have five hours for solving 7 tasks that are given, implying that those problems are much more complex and demanding. I was one of the representatives of our country, and one of the two members of the only team representing our state - alongside with my good friend.

Reflection

As stated above, problems that we are given are very complicated and level of difficulty is considered to be quite high. However, even though I have competed in mathematics earlier, and even though this is not my first international competition, this olympiad was special. I feel that it is because it is so specific, and because I hvave never done a competition in one area alone - it is always a combination of a variety of topics. Combinatorics is one of the four main branches of mathematics. It can remind one of some sort of a game, it requires a lot of logical and creative thinking, knowledge in some theoretical background, counting and prediction skills, as well as a ton of patience and consistency. This, of course, represents a challenge for anyone who wishes to deal with this area of mathematics.

I personally think that the ICO was different than other competitions since it requires team work and a sufficient amount of knowledge that is relates to one large topic only, and since its tests are highly advanced and complex. I believe it is worth as a CAS activity because it has helped me practice my patience and concentration, explore further into the discipline of combinatorics, learb something new, practice team work skills and step out of my comfort zone by accepting a new challenge, which was not at all easy. Also, the fact that I am one of the representatives means a lot to me. Even though we are still waiting for the results and the final ranking list, as the process of composing that list is rather long and complicated, considering the number of works the examiners must read and evaluate, I am happy with what my team has accomplished this Saturday. Only thing I regret is that this is my last year as a senior highschool student, and first year that I have the opportunity to participate in this competition from my country, meaning that this is the only time I got to take part in the ICO.

The Beatles - Get Back - The Rooftop Performance - The 40-minute concert - remixed in stereo by Giles Martin and Sam Okell - is finally out as the digital-only Get Back - The Rooftop Performance. And though the Beatles had spent the previous few years proving themselves masters of the studio with LPs like Revolver and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Rooftop provides a glimpse of what a force they could’ve become as a live act. Full review here.

Aoife O’Donovan and the Age of Apathy Band - Live from the Hi•Fi - When O’Donovan says “We’re on fire up here,” after she and the Age of Apathy Band finish “Elevators,” she is referring to the weather. But she might as well have been talking about the music. Review.

The Jerry Garcia Band - GarciaLive Volume 19 - To call the Oct. 31, 1992, concert that comprises GarciaLive Volume 19 life-affirming is an understatement along the lines of saying Jerry Garcia enjoyed drugs. Review.

Todd Snider - Live: Return of the Storyteller - Few live albums - including 2011’s Live: The Storyteller - capture the essence of a performer the way Return of the Storyteller captures the essence of Todd Snider. Review.

Hot Tuna - 2021-12-29, Freight & Salvage, Berkeley, CA - This album is beautiful for many reasons. Not only because of the low-key, American-blues music, but because of the deep bonds of friendship between the players and the invisible thread that runs from the stage to the seating area and back. Review.

Creedence Clearwater Revival - At the Royal Albert Hall (April 14, 1970) - Fifty years after their breakup, Creedence Clearwater Revival remain so ubiquitous they - and their music - are often taken for granted. But as At the Royal Albert Hall reminds us, the band had not only a passel of stone classics, it was an outstanding concert act. Review.

Neil Young OBS 3: Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 1971, and OBS 4: Royce Hall, 1971 - Recorded two nights apart in 1971 and released on the same day in 2022, Neil Young’s Official Bootleg Series Nos. 3 and 4 are very much the same - from setlists to warm, you-are-there sound. They’re aural time machines to the days when Young’s songbook was relatively thin and virtually no one had heard “Old Man.” Reviews.

Son House - Forever on My Mind - Only 50 or so people attended Son House’s Nov. 23, 1964, concert at Wabash College in Indiana. Although virtually one heard it at the time, everyone can hear it now. And they should. Review.

Grateful Dead - Madison Square Garden, New York, NY, 3/9/81 - Cocaine as rocket fuel. Review.

Zero - Naught Again - Despite the paucity of vocals and the long runtimes, these songs are intricately composed with tension and release where choruses and bridges would otherwise dwell. The tuned-in audience reacts accordingly and the result is an album that damn near succeeds in time travel and space-shifting. Review.

Mavis Staples and Levon Helm - Carry Me Home - Carry Me Home is at its core a religious album that doesn’t require religious ears for enjoyment. Yet, it’s so convincing, those ears may be halfway to the baptismal before the stylus hits the runout groove. Review.

Kris Kristofferson - Live at Gilley’s - Pasadena, TX: September 15, 1981 - Fans who weren’t there can now kinda be there with the release of Live at Gilley’s. The partial-show LP has just enough crowd noise to capture the excitement of the evening and the music proves Kristofferson was one of the rare artists not to fall victim to 1980s production and arrangement values. Review.

So. I have a theory about this. Blue Pearl commissioned Bismuth to make wedding armor for Yellow Pearl potentially because, after attending a lecture on Medieval Knighthood by Pearl, she finds out about the concept of courtly love. She sees a parallel with it to her own centuries-long relationship with YP, and a wedding theme is cemented. The armor’s cape is green because BP heard about Garnet’s Tux-Dress and wanted a similar result, so she went to Bismuth, who canonically has a method of crafting armor that shifts and grows with its wearer. We never saw what BP’s dress looks like because the Crewniverse wanted to keep its design as open to interpretation as the various other plot prompts that SUF left unresolved, like the continuing adventures of Captain Centi and the Nephrite Crew. All I know is, Vidalia deserves to be maid of honor.

Entrapta, like Catra, has all the foundations for a corruption arc. Pre-existing deviance, a solid motivation for revenge, climbing up the enemy ranks until she is the head boss's left hand, and then gaining powet over Hordak himself. Like many villain scientists she assists and joins with the good guys from time to time.

What makes Entrapta different is that, through all of this, she ISNT a mastermind, morally grey ends justifies the means scientist. She is in fact a complete cinnamon roll who's hurt by what happened but doesn't hold a grudge at all and has joined the villains because they gave her sense of belonging, and a place to foster her love of science. So you have the top dog villain at the start of season 3 when shes finally got power over Hordak, and she's using it to tell him to love himself, to show him that our flaws are what make us beautiful and they shouldn't be masked, especially if we need help. And in season 5 she's not the sneaky ex villain getting a questionable redemption, she's literally leading the front lines in terms of converting people to the Rebellion, pulling one clone of a million clones out from under Prime and immediately being able to connect with him, being the one to tell Prime to his face he will never understand love, wrecking his brainwashing network, her connection with Hordak leading to Prime's death.

It's... so OPPOSITE to Shadow Weaver, who joined the rebellion about the same time Entrapta overtook Catra in the horde and then disappeared. Weaver has the standard "redemption" arc but doesn't learn a damn thing in her life, has no humility, and is constantly fucking with people's heads underneath her silver tongued words, all stuff Entrapta literally cannot do.

So you have this very compassionate pure of heart character influencing the iron cold leader of the villains, and this incredibly manipulative abusive character influencing the leaders of the heroes.

I think it's interested how shera plays so hard with tropes.

Yes! Exactly! One of my favorite parts about Entrapta’s character is that, in seemingly direct contrast to Shadow Weaver who looks, talks, and acts like a fairy tale Disney villain evil witch 24/7, with even her attempted ‘redemption martyr moment’ just piling more mental scars onto her surrogate daughters,  everything that we’re presented with in the first few minutes System Failure gives us the idea that Entrapta is this typical (albeit sweet-toothed) Mad Scientist soon-to-be-if-not-already-villain. She lives in a classically evil scary castle on a mountain, it’s full of traps, secret passageways, and (conveniently timed) robot zombies, and there’s mutants in the sewers apparently?!? Especially since some fans know her old incarnation was a shallow villain, once she finally crawls out of a vent like a goddamn Xenomorph with welding mask eyes glowing with menace the audience thinks they have her character figured out, and then she subverts these expectations by greeting our heroes with a genuine, cheery, hospitable welcome that still acknowledges the immediate danger they’re facing and her direct involvement in it. And ever since then, all she’s wanted to do is help people and do science (and hopefully make friends with people by doing those two things). Even when she learns She Ra’s most direct and effective weakness, even when she’s given the chance to use that weakness *again* after she thinks the BFS and Princess Alliance left her for dead, she still doesn’t take the opportunity to go full "They laughed at my experiments, but now I’ll show them all! Brand New Day! Muahahahaha!” etc etc. Shadow Weaver WISHES she could’ve climbed the evil corporate ladder as fast as Entrapta did, and ironically she accomplished it by doing the exact opposite approach to SW: Being 100% genuine and honest about her opinions, knowledge, and feelings. And Hordak establishes time and time again that he hates dishonesty in his ranks (mostly because he’s not great at subterfuge and trickery himself) and gains valuable knowledge and self-worth from Entrapta’s genuine honesty. I may be forgetting something, but I’m pretty sure the one and only time Entrapta intentionally, consciously lies about something is that bit in System Failure where she find the lab and says “We’re here! Uh, I mean, of course we’re here, we were never lost.” Of course, just because she never even considers taking steps towards actual, conscious Villainy and Vengeance doesn’t mean we can’t think up AUs where she does go down that path a bit.  One concept that I’ve yet to make into a proper fic is an alternate ending to Season 5 in which she has a more active role in usurping Prime, fully disconnecting him from the other Clones before Hordak does the Darth Vader/Emperor reference, then taking over the Velvet Glove’s army of clones, droids, and drones in order to collect data on the flora, fauna, and magic of Etheria before expanding her DC Brainiac style "data collection” to the rest of the newly entered galaxy.

Plot: Joe and Vanessa find out the results of her blood pregnancy test, and Joe has an unexpected reaction.

JOE: Joe kept holding out hope that maybe they’d get lucky and Vanessa’s blood test results would be ready on Monday, but the day had quickly passed and she hadn’t received the call yet. So, just as they’d been doing since this past Saturday, they tried to find ways to occupy their time. Eating together, watching movies, even playing some board games. All things Joe hadn’t been able to do in a while, except eat, with his busy work schedule. So, safe to say, this weekend was definitely something he needed without even realizing it. Even if there were still so many worries in the back of his mind while impatiently waiting for the news that could change his life forever. It was about one o’clock in the afternoon on Tuesday in LA, Joe and Vanessa had just finished eating lunch and were now watching a movie together. Well, at least he was because she had knocked out with her head laying in his lap not too long after the movie began. He let her sleep, though, because it was obvious she needed it with how sick she’d been feeling lately. However, his attention had been pulled away from the movie when Vanessa’s phone started to ring on the coffee table. He reached for it and noticed it was an unsaved contact calling her, prompting him to believe it could be the doctor with her test results. “Nessa, wake up. I think they’re finally calling,” Joe spoke, nudging her gently awake.

VANESSA: It had been the longest few days Vanessa could remember experiencing in a long time with so much and so little all happening at once. Saturday had been filled with life changing everything from the thinking she was pregnant and having to wait for results for a few days to being dumped a few hours later. The last two days had been filled with much less, just spending time with Joey and River, doing anything they could to pass the time while obsessively checking her phone all day Monday. Now it was Tuesday and she was exhausted from not sleeping much, River was down for a nap and she immediately laid her head in Joey's lap when she had collapsed onto the couch. As much as she was pretending to push him away in some ways, she was also clinging incredibly tight in all the ways that actually mattered. She had quickly dozed off and was woken up to Joey talking about her phone some time later, needing to blink her eyes open to comprehend what he was saying. "Fuck, okay," she said, taking the phone from him to answer it. Being sure to put it on speaker so that he was able to hear everything as well. "Hello? Yes, this is Ms. Mziray," she told them, answering the questions they asked to verify her identity. It seemed to go on for too long, which was probably a good thing but right now it was only serving to annoy her. "Please wait one moment and the doctor will be on the phone to go over the results of your blood test with you," the woman on the other end said, causing Vanessa to roll her eyes and reach for Joey's hand.

JOE: “Who the hell is Ms. Mziray?” Joe said. And loudly, too. This whole time, he had thought Morgan was Vanessa’s actual last name, but apparently, he had it wrong this entire time. Forget the test results, he was dumbfounded that he never knew she had a completely different last name. And after knowing her for so long, too. He hadn’t even been paying attention to what Vanessa was talking about with the person on the other end of the line, because of how shocked he was. “I’ve known you for what, eight months now, it’s possible you’re having my baby, and I don’t even know your real last name…” Joe paused, letting the sentence hang in the air as he stared at Vanessa in disbelief. “What the hell, Vanessa Mziray?” It was funny how she’d been holding her hand out for him to take for support and he never even realized it until after he went on his little tangent. And what was even funnier was the fact that Vanessa had been giving him a death glare the entire time he went off, and he couldn’t help but burst into a fit of laughter.

VANESSA: Vanessa was quickly annoyed by the hold music, just wanting to get the answers already so that they knew what their lives were going to look like in the future. The annoyance dimmed significantly by the look of pure shock on Joey's face and the way he could not let it got that Morgan wasn't her middle name. "It's not my fault you didn't google me and learn everything you could like a normal person. Up your stalking game, Joseph Lee Burrow," she teased, feeling herself laugh for the first time probably all day, "You should probably use a condom when you fuck someone and don't know their full name, just a tip." The two of them were laughing so much at this point that she didn't even realize the doctor had answered the phone until he cleared his throat and said her name once again. "Sorry. Yes, I'm here," she told him, shoving Joey to quiet him up. The doctor went over some basic nonsense for a moment, causing Vanessa to almost interrupt him to ask him to just tell her whether she was pregnant or not, and then he finally gave the results. "You're not pregnant, Ms. Mziray. There does seem to be some stuff off with your hormone levels, so you should get to your primary doctor but you're not pregnant," he told her and Vanessa almost dropped the phone. It took everything she had to thank him and end the call quickly without reacting properly. As soon as she hung up the phone, she nearly collapsed back into the couch in relief, letting out the biggest sigh of relief she likely ever had. "Holy fuck, I really thought he was going to tell me I was really pregnant."

JOE: "Well, excuse me for thinking Googling someone to get to know them is fucking weird." Joe rolled his eyes playfully, glad for the fact that Vanessa also found it in her to joke around with him at such a crucial time in their lives. It was why he always enjoyed being around her because they could just be as silly and goofy as they wanted without a care in the world. And why he was glad that if this was going to happen, that it was going to be with her. She was already such a good mother to River and he already knew that would show if she were to somehow end up pregnant again. "Ha, very funny," he feigned fake laughter and rolled his eyes again, however, he had actually ended up laughing for real when they were caught by the doctor on the other end of the line clearing his throat. Obviously doing it to shut them the hell up. Joe pretended to act as if Vanessa shoving him hurt him, but the grin on his face remained. That was, until the doctor had delivered the rest results to them. The grin had immediately faltered and Joe fell silent, unsure of what to say or how to react. Even though she wasn't and it wasn't something Joe was exactly ready for, he'd already grown quite attached to the idea of the possibility of him becoming a father. And now, the possibility wasn't even there anymore. After the long bout of silence, he leaned his elbows on his knees and folded his hands together, looking elsewhere around the room besides at Vanessa. "That's great," was all he could manage to muster.

VANESSA: All that Vanessa could focus on was the relief of not being pregnant, not having to go through it all again and there was even a smile on her face. Not that she wouldn't have been happy and ready for it if the results had been the opposite, but it's definitely not something she was wanting for herself right now. It wasn't until she heard the sound of Joey's voice and then turned to look at him that she realized it wasn't a mutual feeling of relief, and it made her heart instantly ache for him. "Joey," she said quietly, reaching for his hand and tugging for him to look at her. Vanessa used her other hand to cup his cheek softly, offering him a small smile and squeezing his hand that was in hers, using all the same physical comforts that he always did for her. "I know it's easy to get attached to the idea, but this is a good thing," she assured him, letting out a small sigh, "Trust me when I say you want to have your first child with someone you love and someone you can build a family with. We would have made a kickass unconventional family between the four of us, there's no denying that, but it's not the way I want it to happen for you. I did the whole unconventional route already, and while I know it would have been a lot healthier and better between the two of us, it's still not the ideal way for it." Vanessa let her words hang in the air for a moment and scooted closer to him, wrapping her arms around him and leaning into his chest like she always did. "You'll make a great father someday. I've watched you with River the last couple days, and I can see it clear as day. But it'll happen when you're with the right person, and when it's the right time for you," she promised and looked up at him, "Just trust me, okay? And when that time happens, I'll be the best damn Aunt your future kid could ever have."

JOE: “Yeah, no, it’s fine. I don’t know why I let myself get attached to the idea,” Joe laughed, but he didn’t even know why because it wasn’t even funny. Not in the slightest. Maybe he was just laughing at himself for allowing himself to get so ridiculously caught up in everything, caught up in the moment of it all. “I don’t really care how I end up having kids. Being normal is for boring people. Unconventional is exciting because that means everything is so unpredictable. Who the hell wants to live a boring, predictable life? I don’t because that’s never been me. I couldn’t have ever predicted I’d end up where I am today.” While Joe made good points, he knew it didn’t really matter now and the results wouldn’t change because of it. “Don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine. We can just pretend like this never happened and just go about our lives. We don’t need to tell anybody,” he said with a shrug of his shoulders. He didn’t even allow the instinct of wrapping his arms around Vanessa to hold her to come through. Instead, he cleared his throat and stood from his place on the couch as he shoved his hands into the pockets of his favorite pair of gray jeans. “I’ll just, uh… I’ll go get my things and head out since you don’t need me here anymore.” Typical of Joe to retreat and act like he didn’t have any feelings whatsoever, it was what he was the best at doing. He said nothing else and disappeared up the stairs to start gathering his things, even cleaning up the guest room before he headed back down to say goodbye. “Call me or text me if you need anything, yeah?”

VANESSA: “It’s easy to say that until you’re in the situation. Not that unconventional doesn’t work and can’t be just as fulfilling, but if you have the chance at doing it the right way then you should wait for it,” Vanessa told him and then allowed him to walk off up the stairs. It stung that he didn’t return the comfort she had offered him, stung more than she’d care to admit but she wouldn’t show it because it’s not what either of them needed to deal with right now. Normally, she would be forcing him to sit down and actually talk about it, especially know he would actually open up to her in a way he wouldn’t for others. But she also knew he really did need to get back for practice, and that sometimes space was essential before being able to talk about things. That’s something she’d work on in a few days after he had more time to process everything, and she had time work off the sting of rejection. Once Joey was back in the room, Vanessa got herself up off the couch and walked over to where he stood. “I will,” she assured him with a nod, crossing her arms around herself to keep from reaching out to him again. She wasn’t sure she could handle the rejected comfort a second time, at least not from him. “Have a safe flight, and thank you for being here with and for me.” The words were genuine, wholeheartedly meaning them, despite things being left in such an awkward place for them right now. “I’ll talk to you later. Bye, Joey.”

JOE: Joe stood motionless and silent as Vanessa said her own goodbyes, but he couldn’t help but to notice the defense mechanism she was using to keep herself from reaching out. Obviously afraid to now after he had practically rejected her earlier before he went to go grab his belongings. Joe had every intention of walking out the door without saying another word, but the look on Vanessa’s face was enough to tug at his heartstrings. He dropped everything in his hands and took a step closer to her, instantly pulling her into his strong arms without even thinking twice about it. Just like he was always so used to doing. He sighed sadly and cradled her head to his chest, his actions speaking louder than words could at the moment. Joe didn’t want to let go because he knew that meant he had to leave and get back home, he just wanted live in the moment forever with her and forget about all of their worries. Forget about their responsibilities. Everything that had happened leading up to this moment. “I’m sorry,” Joe finally said after the incredibly long bout of silence. For someone who rarely got emotional, he could even feel tears pricking at the corners of his eyes. “I wasn’t trying to be a dick back there, you know? I appreciate everything you said to me. This is just… Hard. It’s really fucking hard. And I don’t know how to deal with it.” Joe was finally letting his guard down again and he swore he could audibly hear Vanessa sigh in relief as they finally made eye contact with one another again.

VANESSA: Vanessa was just about to turn around and go find something to occupy herself with while River slept when Joey dropped everything he was holding, the action enough to stop her from moving for just a brief moment. And thankfully she had stopped because Joey was finally hugging her and extending the comfort that he had held back from previously, a gesture that she needed just as much as she was wanting to extend it to him. They may have different opinions on how they results made them feel, but she was still reeling from her breakup and was thankful to be in her safe place with him one more time before he had to leave. "Don't apologize. It's a lot, and you have to process it however you need to. I understood, that's why I wasn't going to say anything about. It's okay," she told him, face buried into his chest with her arms wrapped around him. They stood there for a few minutes, Vanessa not wanting to let go since it would mean she'd be alone again, but she knew they had to sooner rather than later. "We'll both get through it, but we won't have the chance if your Coach kills us for you missing more practice," she very softly laughed, wiping at the corner of her eyes and his with her other hand. Vanessa stood on her tippy toes and grabbed at his shoulders to pull him down more so that she could press a kiss to his cheek and then stepped over to open the door for him. "Text me when you land."

JOE: Joe sighed quietly, holding onto Vanessa even tighter. He really felt as if he didn’t even deserve her kindness after the way he had outright rejected her earlier. However, he could tell that she was in the same boat of not wanting to let go because it meant that they’d both be alone again. And through the entire situation, he had enjoyed getting to spend so much time with her and her son. But reality was calling and Joe knew he’d have to leave sooner than later. “I would never let my coach kill you,” Joe teased right back. It was funny how they could fall back into their typical dynamic even when they were trying to have a serious moment. It wouldn’t be them if one of them didn’t crack a joke at some point. Joe was taken a bit by surprise when Vanessa stood on her tippy toes to plant a kiss to his cheek, but it only caused him to smile at the gesture. And he, of course, returned the favor to show her he cared just as much. “I will,” he promised and wrapped her up in a hug one more time before he disappeared through the door.

There’s something different about his hair? Has SH had a hair transplant?!

In Sam's IG live chat with The Tasting Alliance, his hair looked extremely short for the first time in years, but three days later it looked significantly different, and first impressions count. He underwent a surgical procedure? by a variety of elements. Her bald crown was easy to spot by thinning or loss of hair on the crown, while hair growth on the sides remains constant; accompanied by a receding hairline. Hair loss with ageing is totally normal, but there are many things you can do to combat it. Is this his best way to combat it?

In 2021, he was still showing signs of hair loss. He started to grow his hair out. But toward last spring before his Live talk on IG with The Tasting Alliance, SH swapped the long curls for a much shorter hairstyle.

SH may have used established hair loss treatments like finasteride and minoxidil to make his locks thicker. But come on, do you think he looks like the kind of person who rubs hair loss products into his scalp morning and night?

Recently, SH's hairstyle choice has been a big departure from the trendy cut of the past. What has been done? And it seems doubtful that he would have been able to achieve this look with his previous hair. Although SH was never completely bald, his hair in the front was very thin compared to what it is now. SH's hairline at the right time seems to be the problem as he has more hair at the moment. But with his wet hair it was clear in 2020: MIK1 when his head come out of the water, there was no hiding the fact that his hair loss was continuing and had become more and more apparent.

Even before his 40s was displaying the early signs of androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss). Now, though, he seems to be sporting a different hairstyle every week! So what’s he done? This short style disguises his receding hairline far more effectively than longer hair did. In fact, it was barely even noticeable.

So he could surely afford the best hair transplant surgeon. If I had to guess, I’d say he had the procedure at some time between the end of Outlander season 6 and July 2022 during his long summer break holidays.

He could have had a hair transplant. He has hair on the nape and sides, making it an excellent donor area to harvest. Why not just take hair from other areas and move it to where you need it? If you have money and time… He went for it.

Before the alleged transplant? Then he seemed to be holding on nicely, for years with toupée, and hairpiece after the sort of Nw 3A+ (The Norwood scale is the standard measure of hair loss progression in men. Androgenetic alopecia also called male pattern baldness) he was before this video, looks like a good recovery or great maintenance. But I agree that for such a neat hairline he likely has had a transplant as a final touch. If he’s still under pills/topicals the result is not that outstanding, because he only needed to restore the hairline.

But it is required to respect certain deadlines after a hair transplant. Wearing a motorcycle helmet after your hair transplant, it is necessary to wait a while, at least a month and a half so as not to damage the newly implanted follicles so that they can take root correctly and avoid direct sunlight on the operated area. It appears he ignored medical instructions and rode a motorcycle with a helmet on in Venice. CA driving in broad daylight, and it was not the time to wear a helmet, again after surgery.

He may start razoring his sides and donor area a month after the hair transplant. But, for the new hair, he must wait 6 months to be able to cut it. (Sam cut his hair) But, he cannot observe and understand the recommendations and guidelines, not even himself, by not complying with the procedure. It is part of his behaviour to make fun and evade any guidance.

His hairline is mature, with male pattern baldness. His receding hairline eventually thins out into a noticeable retreating hairline. He will not shape it like a youthful hairline. It doesn't look *so* good. The actual hairline on his forehead has that all-too-perfect Ken doll look. We'll see.

He has short hair, and patients who have had FUE or DHI hair transplants can frequently wear their hair very short, like a grade 1 or 2 cut. But the hair did not increase that much in three days between the live chat on Thursday and Loch Lomond video on Sunday. It would mean that the Live on IG was recorded in advance. It could be after the result of the competition on September 9, with about 20 days of difference for his hair to increase.

Many patients may prefer Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) as with DHI, Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) the maximum number of grafts that can be implanted is 4000, whereas the FUE method can cover much larger surface areas. But in SH’s case is a different.

There are several reasons people choose to have DHI hair transplants. DHI direct hair transplants are suitable for both men and women. HI Hair transplants are cosmetic surgical procedures. Some reasons people choose to have DHI hair transplants are: Patients who want to have hair in areas on the scalp that are receding or balding

I don't know if he still expects a better result than Daman’s magazine cover, but we will see his result when his hair grows back 1 year after surgery, but the recession and thinning in the hairline and temples are the same. His bald spots in the middle and the top of his head disappeared. Perhaps corrective transplants could be considered shortly, but if he has resorted to a treatment to overcome baldness, it directly affects his image.

After a hair transplant, it takes a while before the newly transplanted hair begins to grow. Hair will look improved at around month 6, but it takes around 18 months for a hair transplant to achieve its maximum potential.

This is very hypothetical and recent, so it is not good to compare or suggest similarities with other people even though they supposedly used the same procedural technique.

But, Many people confuse FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction or Follicular Unit Excision) and DHI (Direct Hair Implantation).

FUT: is also known as strip grafting. The surgeon takes a strip of skin containing the hairs from the donor site. Afterward, he takes the hairs from the extracted skin and cuts the grafts into shape. After which the hairs are placed on the recipient site. Which led to the “hair plugs” look.

FUE: It’s a hair transplantation removes the grafts one by one from the donor area using a micromotor or manual punch. Taking individual hair follicles from your skin and moving them to another part of your body where the hair's thinner or absent. In FUE, a surgeon manually cuts channels in your scalp before implanting hair follicles.

DHI: It’s a modification of the FUE technique, in DHI, the surgeon uses a specialized pen-shaped tool that can do both at the same time. Taking individual hair follicles from your skin and moving them to another part of your body where the hair's thinner or absent, not cutting the scalp before implanting hair follicles.

After looking at different points, there are two possibilities for Sam's surgical procedure which could be FUE or DHI. It looks like a DHI surgery procedure to stimulate hair growth in bald areas by transferring follicles from other regions of the scalp (usually at the back of the head, at the nape of the neck). It's been slim pickings as a CAS fan because we haven't really had much in the way of anything new since 2019/2020, and I understand that's also because the pandemic happened and they're getting all the touring done that they wanted to before. But from 2020-end of 2022, it's been a musical desert.

December brought us Pistol (which was really good), and a few months later we got one hell of a bomb drop: Bubblegum would finally be releasing. Now, some reading this might stop and say "what do you mean by finally? Bubblegum is a new song!"

Ah, but it actually isn't; just up until July 2023, it only ever existed as a crudely recorded live performance. Go watch it if you haven't already. Maybe keep it on tap in another tab or something.

Short of the relatively mediocre sound quality, the earlier version of Bubblegum was well in line with CAS' typical sound, and it sounded absolutely amazing.

The version that we just got in 2023, however...it feels like a very rare miss from CAS. The overall structure of the song is similar enough, but the guitar is toned down a lot. A little too much. The solo present in the live/early version is completely missing in the studio version, the job of carrying the song in that section being left to bass and keyboard.

The guitar really only gets to strut its stuff during the chorus (and a bit at the end where it's just repeating the same melody over and over) where it feels like it's fighting Greg's (excellent) vocals for prominence.

I feel like 2023's Bubblegum would otherwise be a very okayish song in a universe where the early, live version didn't exist and wasn't vastly superior. It's a shame too because I feel like 2023's version could easily be made better by just allowing the guitar to shine through a bit more than it does. I know CAS loves their bass and keyboard, but it feels like 2023's Bubblegum was carried too hard by both, and it shows.

(On the flip, if you want an example of an old song of theirs being brought forward with excellent results, Please Don't Cry is a good one. Originally appeared on an early album of theirs that's out of print and it was more fast-paced rock, but was performed live in 2018 with their current sound and it absolutely blows me away.)
